n initiative of MRJ creations, Design Matrix is a bimonthly magazine offering a sneak peek into the latest design trends and related aspects in the world of architecture by covering leading architects, designers and their design with

a fresh perspective. Being the founder of Design Matrix, with a rich experience of four decades in this industry, I am delighted to present a power-packed edition to our dear readers. I thank all the architects and designers, who contribute wonderful concepts to our editorial desk, thus adding value to our magazine. I owe my thanks to our readers and strongly feel it is your support and the goodwill that has made Design Matrix, an esteemed publication in the architecture and design arena. Our cover story depicts Ar. Alkesh Gangwal from Aurangabad, a city of rich cultural heritage. A conversation with him made me wonder about various issues regarding the sorry state of some of India’s heritage sites. India has made a remarkable presence on the global map as a major tourist destination. We are proud Indians; it is high time to open up our minds and think what we have to offer to the tourists. We pompously chant the mantra ‘Athithi Devo Bhava’, but do not stop a while to think… are our guests offered with right facilities during their stay. Let us join hands and work together for a solution to make our country truly a tourist haven. On our readers’ request, we have introduced Metamorphosis, a presentation of sketches resulting into final design. Hope my architect friends will send their valuable contribution, to take it further... Happy Reading!

architect designing the project. This inspired me further to join architecture.

Do you remember anything in particular that you did in college to pursue your dreams? I read books of Ar. Charles Correa and Ar. B. V. Doshi – the masters of Indian Architecture. Since then I cherished a dream of working with Ar. Charles Correa after completing my education.

How were your initial days of practice as an architect? In the third year of architecture, every student is supposed to undergo an internship of six months. I joined Ar. Madhav Naik in New Delhi. After completing my internship, I returned back to Kolhapur and completed my degree. I was a topper in Design, and this helped me to make my dream come true. I joined Ar. Charles Correa’s office and worked with him for more than two years.

We would love to know your experiences with renowned Ar. Charles Correa. When I joined his firm, my colleagues told me that he is a perfectionist and could not tolerate a single mistake done in his office. He had an international style of working with projects in the UK, US and Mauritius. I believe that he is the one who has mentored me and taught me what design means in the real sense. I owe a lot to him.

I would like to share a small incident with you. I was given a small assignment by a senior at Correa’s office to draw a section that depicts a swimming pool for a Permanent Mission of India (PMI) building in New York. I drew a small drawing on A4 size and was in air thinking that I have drawn a beautiful drawing. Those were the days when there was no email system; the only way to send any communication was through fax. With confidence, I sent the fax directly to the client as Ar. Correa was out of town. All the communications done in his absence were sent to him. Next morning I was called around 10 am to meet Ar. Correa. I was expecting an appreciation but to my surprise, he trashed me like anything and expressed extreme anger for missing out levels in the drawing. I got very upset. In the evening, after taking a cold shower, I realised that Correa’s displeasure was for my betterment and with this optimistic feeling, I moved on further and still continuing....

What is your success mantra? My work is my passion. Hard work, attention to details and dedicated efforts for the best output drives us ahead.

What message would you like to give to the younger generation? Be passionate about what you do. Work with utmost commitment and high level of integrity. Do not believe in shortcuts and these principles will surely pave your way towards success.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years? Focussing more on challenging projects that would help us grow as designers, to tackle international projects in years to come...

Personal Diary: Family plays a crucial role in shaping our personality. How has your family helped you, to reach the path of success? My mother, wife and everyone else in the family are extremely supportive. I lost my father at a young age. After him, it was my mother who educated me, and with her blessings, I am here today. How do you start your day? I wake up at 5.30 am and take an hour long walk. After which, I prefer a cup of green tea while reading the newspaper. I skip breakfast, take an early lunch and am in office by 9 am. 2pm is the break for snacks. Normally I work for 10-12 hours a day.

How do you spend your leisure time?

Reading habits: Architectural and interior magazines and spiritual books. Hobbies: Listening to music – classical and spiritual – and watching entertaining movies. Favourite movie: Jodha Akbar. I must have watched it more than 15 times, as it is one movie which I feel is very well-presented with fine minute details.

My leisure time is for close friends and family. I must say that I am fortunate enough, to be always surrounded by caring and loving friends.

Favourite pass-time on weekends: I love cooking on Sundays.

What you would have been, if not an architect? I cannot imagine what I could have been, if not an architect.... probably running a grocery shop...

lerkenwell in London is the heart and home to UK’s design industry. Located in the ultra-cool east-end of London, it boasts of over sixty furniture & interiors showrooms, a wealth of creative businesses and

more architects & designers per square mile than anywhere else on the planet. Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) takes advantage of this creative hub every year for 3 days. With over 150 events, a series of pop-up exhibitions & installations, talks,

performances, music and workshops, the festival is a showcase of cutting edge design from some of the biggest names in the industry. I felt that CDW was different from any other trade shows or exhibitions as it is not based under one roof but is spread across the area where many showrooms open their doors for visitors offering tours while sipping champagne or eating chocolates. It is therefore a festival for designers to celebrate their work and showcase their talent. There was a huge selection of new products on show which brought a fresh perspective to design and its purpose. And here I have picked a few designs which reflected a fun attitude.

My picks….

56 DESIGN MATRIX • JULY-AUGUST 2013

The Swing Table, by Duffy London The idea behind this design is that ‘we don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing George Bernard Shaw’ Putting a little extra fun into dinner time and boardroom meetings, this four poster table uses its structure to suspend a central lampshade and eight hanging chairs that sway playfully. This design creates an exceptionally divergent experience and aesthetic, creating a room within a room, with chairs that float around the table. What better way to lure people into meeting rooms? I would love to have one for our office. Wouldn’t you?

The Shadow Chair, by Duffy London This was not on display at CDW but I saw this on their website and really liked the idea behind it. I think the name also influences the way you look at any design

Carry On, Stool from Offect Carry On is a portable seating solution that is based on a strong belief in the need of flexible working places. Carry On is not only physically flexible; but the handle on top also signals the user on how it should be used. I found the round bucket like shape very comfortable and the idea very inviting.

A Dream

Come True....

Ar. Prem Nath, Prem Nath and Associates, Mumbai, shares with the readers of Design Matrix, the exhilarating experience of creating Bansal Residence for a business family at Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Words : Marilyn Madathil 62 DESIGN MATRIX • JULY-AUGUST 2013

B

ansal Residence was designed for a young couple with innovative ideas in mind. While elaborating on the USP of the project, Ar. Prem Nath says, “We translated our client’s dreams into reality. A lot of research was involved behind this project.”

Design Bansal Residence is designed as a palatial villa with ground plus two floors and a basement. The villa has been well-clad with an array of stone cladding, texture, while the paved pathways and pergolas further enhance the foreground. The plush finishes on the collaborative seating arrangements for the guest serve as an added attraction in the living room area. The ceiling is enhanced with LED Cove lighting. The designer glass offers a glimpse of the JULY-AUGUST 2013 • DESIGN MATRIX 63

adjoining drawing room. The dining room has ‘fantasy’ redefined with fourteen-seater dining table; an Italian marble top along with peacock-shaped dining chairs. This Italian marble top is fitted with a ‘Train’, which on the tap of a button runs on tracks all around the table to serve food. About the creation of the train concept, Ar. Prem Nath says “We contacted vendors from the US and Germany, and after getting no specific solution, we got the right mix of a hobby artist, a carpenter and a technician to develop such a train.” The life size fish tank in the dining hall creates a mind-blowing ambience. A personal drawing room was specially designed to ensure comfort and privacy to the family members. This room comprises a designer wall covering co-ordinated with another wall with texture paint complementing the glass centre tables. The play lounge in the basement sets the mood right, with its graphic ambience, multi-coloured seating, off beat lounge chairs and many other recreational elements. The family lounge is planned up on the first floor. The seating arrangement enables different age groups to enjoy their space within the same lounge space. Wide staircase floored in Italian marble gives an overview

to the family lounge above and dining room below. The staircase area is enhanced by a backdrop of hand painted artwork – while the onyx hand rails lead one to the centrally located mono-lift. The bedroom designed in rich red creates a romantic forefront; LED-highlighted decking, velvet sofas, soft-padded rugs further enhance this feeling. The bedroom designed for the couple’s daughter consists of a large space that has a wall of ‘alphabets’ on one side and ‘hall of fame’ wall for each of soft toys on the other – all with a ‘fairytale’ round bed. The lavish bedroom area is finished in Rosso Lavante and Pink Spider, describing a Jacuzzi, shower cubicle, dual basins, high-tech WC and the works; another bathroom also includes a Jacuzzi, large wash basin, shower cubicle and a designer sanitary ware. The exteriors articulate plush landscapes, musical fountain-jets, kids play area, all backed with beautifully manicured lawns and exotic plantations.

Project timelines The project took a year for completion – this included the initial construction stage, wherein parallel to designing, few materials were shortlisted for civil works.

Challenges Speaking about the challenges, Ar. Prem Nath says, “Bhavnagar being a comparatively remote location, material sourcing was one of the challenges we faced. This being a high-end interior project, sourcing had to be done either from Mumbai or Ahmedabad. Moreover, arranging right kind of technical team to work at Bhavnagar, especially for AV, automation, etc was another bottleneck, which we had to overcome.” prempna@gmail.com www.premnath.com

Adding life to the inanimate Words, Concept Designing & Styling: Pranav Thakor; Images: Anand Diwadkar

Though I am an Interior Designer, every site by default has certain structural challenges and revisions the art of script writing, where every scene or object (whether living or inanimate) has to have a purpose or catalyst reason to its existence. For instance in a Living Room, the usual default story is of having a seating arrangement viz. couch, chair etc, a centre table, drapes in the window, a T.V unit, a display unit, etc. If and when we give this a nice dramatic effect, like the drapes are gathered in a certain fashion on one side giving some shape and form to the conventional windows, placing a throw on the couch giving it some casual flow, keeping some good pot potpourri in a shallow platter with some corns or pine cones in it on one side and a pastel colored candle to complete the setting. The rug can be parallel or diagonally placed as per the seating arrangement to break the linear monotony. You can tilt the wing chair or a high back chair with respect to the other arrangement. Place a nice bushy or tall planter in a corner which brings life to the whole space. You can even replace this by a big brass or copper pot

sofa sets, big, low centre table instead of rectangular knee-length tables are the few examples. Curtains from the ceiling irrespective of the window lintels makes the rooms look spacious and big. Numerous cushions of varied sizes, shapes and colors are placed on the couch breaking the conventional arrangement of one cushion per person rule. A formal couch, a settee clubbed with a high back chair or a wing chair, etc. and a centre table accessorized with coffee table books, a fresh flower arrangement and floor rugs/ carpet complete the picture. The corridors, which are normally overlooked or don’t have the scope for designing it as such can be highlighted by use of mere picture frames or a mirror or the clichéd family photographs or collage of the same. The bedrooms are the formal areas of styling as I may term it as. The story of a bed, wardrobe, a dresser and side tables is the same in any bedroom. This we can change by use of good bed throws mostly in contrast with the bed cover placed in a dramatic fashion, multiple cushions preferably odd in number, pastel colored or then neutral colors like gray, golden, white in slightly out of proportion are inn factor for now. WHY

ALUMINIUM? Kushal K Bajaj, Executive Director, Geeta Aluminium Co Pvt Ltd, explains the reasons as to why aluminium is among the preferred materials for construction of buildings, and particularly, for designing windows.

B

eing a flexible material, aluminium is suitable for all architectural styles. Known for its strength, it can be used to build big structures. With advanced surface finishing

techniques like colour anodising, pure polyester powder coating, wood finish powder coating, nickel plating, the aesthetics of the product can be maintained. The durability of the surface finishing of aluminium profiles can be maintained with PVDF coating, PU painting/ coating, hard anodising, etc. Completely durable, aluminium is a product that is weather resistant as well as resistant to rodents and borer insects. Aluminium can be insulated from heat and cold with thermally broken solution. It allows sound absorption by employing various types of glasses, and hardly requires any maintenance. It can be altered easily; can be given any traditional finishing or wood effect for refurbishment. This is not all; aluminium is a green material as it reduces usage of wood besides saving the planet from plastic debris. Moreover, it is infinitely recyclable. An added advantage is that one can even expect a good payback for the salvaged or scrapped aluminium.

regular staff seating. The partitions between senior managers’ cabins are of glass, maintaining complete transparency between staff and also making the office look visually large. There is no wall separating the reception area and staff area ensuring that the grandeur of the office is felt as soon as a person enters it. The conference room has been designed to cater to 12 people, with a flexibility to be converted into two self-sufficient meeting rooms big enough to have seating capacity for 5 and 7 individuals, respectively. Thus, these meeting rooms can function as separate or as one conference room with a facility to do video conferencing with client’s other offices.

Company logo: A key design element The client’s company logo is a significant element in overall design. The office design leverages the basic hexagonal geometry of the logo and has elements of it and this makes both functional and aesthetic sense. The entrance façade is welcoming with company name written in bold steel over a glass panel aesthetically embossed with the company logo. The hexagonal logo design is also fundamental to the furniture design across the office. The angles, edges and vectors of the hexagonal design are used aesthetically while optimally utilising the space. The senior managers’ cabins are lined with a 40’ long wall made of concrete hexagons placed at different angles. 88 DESIGN MATRIX • JULY-AUGUST 2013

Customised design The client requirement included adequate filing storage. Every staff member has been provided with storage cabinets for files behind their seats. These cabinets perform a dual purpose by functioning as a pin-up board for the person seated behind. To make these cabinets look less bulky, an iron plate shelf was introduced above it, which also supports the working desks of next aisle. Senior staff cubicles are placed in between seating area for permanently seated staff and mobile staff to have better control. To ensure that the division between these cubicles and staff remains seamless, a PU coated wooden barrier has been used – the height of which at no point is above eye level. Rugged looking iron plates, rivets, raw concrete effect are used in the staff working area along with materials such as PU-coated furniture, glass, mirrors etc. As one walks from the regular staff area to the Director’s cabin, there is a transition in the material; iron plates and PU finish laminates make way for veneer, back painted glass (BPG) and velvet finish wall papers. The staff dining area is treated with red coloured BPG making the space feel more casual and giving the staff a well-deserved break from the work area.
