ights act as an effective medium of non verbal communication. It affects our emotions, moods, health, well being, energy, and our spiritual awareness at both conscious and subconscious levels. LED saves energy that is all I knew about lighting. My interaction with Ar. Rohini Mani for the cover story enlightened my knowledge on this subject. I learned the fundamentals of lighting applicable for specific requirements. The conversation with Ar. Rohini instilled a deep feeling within me, a desire to create a cosy ambience in my little apartment and my childhood craze for scented candles drove me towards LeCdeor – a flagship decor showroom in Mumbai. The marvellous candle stands, tea light holders, decorative lamps mesmerized me. The result was penning down about the wonderful collection. The Design Promo will take you to this new bright world. Hope you enjoy the wide array of products here ! Our thrust to make each and every issue creative and informative gave us more opportunities to explore. We met young and dynamic Riya Kuwelker, the founder of Pink Elephink; she took us to the Mumbai’s largest wall decal at Sahar Plaza and we were perplexed to know that it was her creativity that resulted in this mind blowing design. We were invited by young Ar. Asit Karekar to sift through the design elements of his recent residential project and we were awe stricken with the interiors. The business hotel designed by Ar. Sanjay Patil, a renowned architect from Nashik, and the 5 star hotel by young Ar. Rohit Mankar, who is none other than Ar. Prakash Mankar’s son will lead one towards the world class hospitality experience. See and feel it! Design Matrix is not only about the great designers; we believe the design students ability to create wonders. The product designs by students of Nirmala Niketan are an instance. Our journey for this issue ended with our visit to the recent Grad show of MIT ID, Pune. The result – a great experience with budding next gen designers. Chao

The corporate design article was well presented. I liked the style of presentation. I even liked the residential project and MIT ID Design Pedagogy. Overall Design Matrix is nothing but a great Design Magazine. It has a new concept every issue and that is why I don’t miss it.
I thoroughly enjoyed the cover story on Edifice Architects. I feel all the other architectural firms should come forward and start charitable setups for education of children. I feel this will help us to make a new India and a developed nation.

The article on bead curtains blowed my mind and I being an interior designer will be interested to know about such elegant designer products. I would say, Design Matrix is a complete design magazine comprising everything from the interiors industry. I feel in every issue the team DM should strive to bring in innovations.
I am a voracious reader and my interest lies in knowing about new products and reading interviews. I really liked the conversation with trousseau designers, Neeta Lulla and her daughter Nishka. I feel, Design Matrix should cover the leading boutique design stores across our country and it will be very interesting for your readers’ community.

Lighting Trends L ighting design is an art and science. Our readers would be keen to know
more about lights and might be
confused what to use in a particular space.
Here is the solution. Ar. Rohini explains lighting trends… “Today lighting is totally human centric and it is all about human comforts and energy efficiency. Ideally, lighting design should represent the synthesis of human factors, research technology, photometry and calculation. The overarching principles should guide the designer towards specific solution that are energy efficient, easy to maintain and minimally expensive and provide glare free visibility of the task. The luminaries design should also take care of the other aspects like mechanical, thermal and electrical,” says Ar. Rohini. Let’s understand the fundamentals of lighting in different spaces. Philips Ind Ltd ( LAC), Kolkata
Residential Spaces A home is special space and in residential segment, mood lights, dimmers, scene controls and automation is being prevalent in recent times. A walk through with Ar. Rohini will be an eye opener for each one of us to know the different lighting techniques: Main Entrance: Light above the main entrance door is not only inviting but also allows one to see the visitor’s face clearly. In the entrance, foyer lighting can create a great aesthetic sense and could be achieved with decorative wall bracket and indirect lighting. Living and Dining Area: In the living and dining space lighting should be more dynamic. The light setting can be decided as per the mood. This can be achieved by decorative wall light, soft lit table lamps for general ambience lighting. These lights

central dome lights, fluorescent tubes and incandescent lamps. “One can use incandescent or CFL for general lighting, halogen for focus lighting and tubes for cove or indirect lighting or with warm colouring renderer. It is preferable that the colour of CFL and tube should be with warm colour rendering for true lighting to enhance the aesthetic value of the objects. Today, even metal halide lamps are used for home interiors. In case your interiors are based on very cool shades like blue and white, then one shoulduse lamps / tubes with cool colour rendering..For better colour rendering one can shift to 90 series of lamps for 80’s” explains Ar. Rohini.
Office Space & Retail: A work space is believed to be a second home, so it is necessary to give more emphasis on lighting levels and creating comfort zone for each individual. Lighting of an office space is based on the work activity one is involved in; whether it is a general office, call center, a meeting room, reception or a conference room, the lightPride
ing levels vary and should be designed accordingly. In call centers the lighting lev-

and creativity have no bounds. Today lighting is the 4th dimension and lighting design has unlimited possibilities. In recent times, lighting has reached limitless possibilities, be it in technology or aesthetics or luminaries design. It is left to the imagination of lighting consultant and designers to mould it in whichever way possible. The most preferred lamp source for intimacy and good colour rendering of the food is usually GLS or halogen lamps. This light source does make the surrounding and the food more attractive. For theme restaurants, one can use imagination and create fittings or fixtures using available lamp sources to match the theme, highPride

T
he office for Omnicom India is situated in an old building on Carmichael Road, Mumbai. It was a fragmented plan with an open to sky terrace and
the corridor connecting the director’s cabin with the reception, secretarial space and executive cabin. The open terrace ensured that enough daylight reached every corner of the office. In the free end of the terrace, a wooden trellis was provided with ever green creepers and lots of potted plants were placed strategically to give it a garden look. The client brief revolved around creating a personalized office space with comfortable furniture and a warm interior. This was achieved by the use of Burma Teak and matching veneer and a lot of landscaping with in the office. Reception was provided with Barcelona chairs and simple desk for the reception. Lighting was subtle and the wall was decorated with tastefully choose art works and beautiful rugs. The beautiful rugs on the floor reflected the taste of the occupant.

he brief was to accommodate the Share Dept. of H.L.L. in an area of 12,000sqft, spread out in second and third floors. The brief also specified that there will be a lot of interaction between people and
a dedicated area with maximum security to be provided for records. Hence the requirements were divided in 2 floors. The main reception was provided on the third floor with an internal staircase leading down to the computer control section and a few workstations and a large area dedicated for record storages. The reception was provided in front of the main door with controlled access with a corridor on either side leading to the office areas behind. Since there will be plenty of customers, a large number of seating was provided along with a curved counter for customer interaction. A large designer glass forms the backdrop for the reception and at the same time giving a soft glow of natural light from the windows behind. The corridor to the left of the reception leads one to the main office areas where the cubicle workstations are neatly laid out to create the feeling of maximum space. A neat row of storages are placed under the window all along the office. The focal point at the end of the workstation is a colourful mural depicting organizational growth. The mural is fixed on to the back of storage. Beyond the mural the space is reserved for a strong room with a special steel door accessible from inside the office as well as from the right of the reception. The workstations are finished with steam beach laminate interspaced with rust coloured panels giving the office an airy, bright and cheerful look. The flooring chosen is vitrified tiles giving it the touch of sophistication. The natural light of the place has been well utilized, while providing a pleasing mix of warm and cool artificial lighting. This office strikes a balance between state of the art facilities like CCTV, efficient computer cabling, burglar alarms and smoke detection system while the homely environment is created by the use of warm colours and plants and plenty of art works, adorning all the empty wall surfaces.

The design inspiration for ‘Gordon House’ was taken from the multicultural nature of the company, blending the colours of country flags from around the world in a virtual corridor of colour. This created a well-connected and stimulating working environment embracing diversity and function as well as being unique, flexible and sustainable.

that is “form follows function” or “function follows form” while planning a building. “There was a requirement for large banqueting areas and for optimising the basic flow of spaces as well as keeping the structural cost low we arrived at a tower and podium concept. Rather than the conventional tower sitting on a podium, we added the podium to the tower block which is expressed formally using contrasting materials to both these elements. A landscaped courtyard at ground level becomes an element bringing in light and ventilation around which the important public areas have been planned. The terrace of the banquet hall accommodates a pool and becomes an outdoor landscaped party area,” says Ar. Rohit Mankar, Principal, Parallax Design Studio, explaining the design methodology.

before settling on Honeycomb pattern with light shaded veneer and dark walnut framing; and the result is just stunning and visually very aesthetic. When we queried about the unusual use of bright colours, the reply was all the more interesting. As the client happened to be of Rajasthani origin, the AUK team decided to bank on it which is traditionally entwined with its culture. This theme was guaranteed to make them feel at home and portray their own personality.
Let’s go a bit into details! Living Room Our team was flabbergasted with the living room, which was huge by Mumbai’s present standards. It was spacious, functional, aesthetically appealing and with enough open space to host a party very conveniently. The dining area is designed unconventionally with a trio of seats on one side and a bench on the other, enabling the bench to be moved anywhere for a casual chat or a group discussion.

layered brick tiles, roofs that look like shallots or witch caps, beautiful bay windows and copious amounts of mosaic designs depicting seasons, historic battles, gods, apostles, devils, flowers, birds and other inspiration from nature. Such is the case when one arrives into Cogels Osylei, lying in the Berchem district of Zurenborg, which is one of the three streets that form the golden triangle of Art Nouveau, Antwerp. It is a bazaar of all possible style houses. Curiously each house stands out on its own, each screaming for attention in its own unique way.

bright office will definitely add to an optimistic experience for its workforce. The white coloured
walls with reflective fabrics and glass films expand this relatively small office space. On the contrary, rustic and leather finished furniture adds a bold definition to each space. Lighting not only illuminates the space, but it also has the power to define and enhance the identity of that particular space, this ideology inspired Ar. Tapan Shah, Principal, The Design Atelier and he used low dim yellow lights, dark bold leather laminates and soft gold tapestries in contrast to the pearl white wall paint; setting a perfect mood to work efficiently. To create a rustic look, Ar. Tapan and his team designed the reception area with the back lit wooden panelled partition, which curves in the form of a low height false ceiling; the result is an welcoming ambience in the entrance. A high output – no glare concentrated lighting besides the meeting table create a great environment for client meetings. The lime green grade wall of these spaces, compliment the white semi-informal chairs, creating a relaxing and calm atmosphere. “We designed the Executive Cabin as a mere reflection of the persona of the company’s director. We tried our level best to imbibe his personal qualities within his office space and built maximum comfort level for him,” explains Ar. Tapan describing the Executive Cabin design. The idea of continuity was followed within the cabin by extending the table with wooden panelled wall and further extended in the form of false ceiling. Every little effort that one puts in today for a green style of living is going to become a way of life for the future generation believes Monica. “I strongly believe that by passing on pieces from generation to generation, we are hugely contributing to the environment,” she adds.
