ope each one of you enjoyed and had great fun this Diwali ! Celebration has always been a major part of our Indian culture and in a festive mood, I am thrilled to announce that Design Matrix is now four. So are you ready for the Design Dhamaka? Then here we have a Cover Story on a sober personality, Ar. Anil Salian and cheerful Amita. We converse about architecture and interiors spaces, right from a corporate office to a residential space; a retail outlet to a welcoming hospitality space; the brainstorming ideas and hard work a designer puts in while creating a lovely and lively space. Design Matrix has created a benchmark in the interior industry by featuring projects across the globe. The exclusive residential projects, showcased in this edition have been selected with an eagle eye from different parts of our country and it defines the versatility of our culture and the lifestyle. Though most of us live in a surrounding that is modern and adore our tech savvy way of living; we still strive to enjoy the bliss of nature. Imagine a home among the Mango trees and this is not a dream, but a reality ,our Leisure Design is the perfect example. As we are discussing about harmony with nature, let me ask a question to our readers, how many of us have ever thought of indoor gardening and this is a real fun exclaims Avni Sejpal. Her secret mantra will certainly evoke this new leisure pursuit in you! I am certain that our readers will enjoy reading the International projects and an interesting Global Eye. I had a great time networking with the A+D community at FO- AID and UBM Index Trade Fairs this year and have lots of news to share . With the approaching New year, we welcome your ideas to make our forthcoming New Year Edition better as there is always a scope of betterment, isn’t it? Catch you soon with the next Edition !

Design Magic Architecture has to respond to the location of the site, vegetation, climate and materials. Built form that is sensitive to the culture and site creates an identity and becomes sustainable without much extra effort. Controlled use of glass, shading devices, internal courtyards, use of earthy materials/ colors, landscaping and energy saving techniques are elements that ASA employs while conceptualizing their projects. Let’s enter different spaces !

A Homely Touch Ar. Anil loves creating welcoming interiors for residential spaces. With Design Matrix, Anil reveals the secret behind creating a home sweet home. He strongly feels, “Residential interiors need to reflect the personality of the owner as they need to ‘feel at home’ with the design. Houses need to have a calming effect and a bring a sense of joy to their lives. Use of natural materials, textures and abundance of natural light help create the feel.”

HOSPITALITY Inviting feel We ask Anil, how is hospitality design unique and he says, “Hospitality design has to respond to the location and the category to which it caters i.e. business or leisure. It’s about creating an ambience for guests where they feel comfortable and relaxed and can experience the culture of the region and enjoy the high points of the location. Creating the right ambience and a feeling of luxury along with good service are key to their success. ASA has designed projects for the Taj and Sarovar Group of Hotels.”

easily available options to stay fit, like easy access to a gym or an option to follow the footsteps of the likes of Baba Ramdev. This consciousness or trend is also seen at many workplaces, where some companies have installed a cycling track inside the office building to encourage fitness or others go for the trendier lunch-time option and get portable hot-pods for yoga. Hot-pod Yoga is catching on – these inflatable heated pods (think bouncy castle but with a flat floor) are designed to practice yoga at an optimum temperature and in a calming atmosphere. The inventors of this product say that “the idea is to step away from the outside world, from mobile phones, emails and the pace of everyday life”. These pods are delivered to office spaces and are easily popped-up in 10 minutes to fit 20 people at a time and can be neatly packed away after use. So this is a clever product that encourages people to get away from their desk. But what happens when you have a busy schedule and getting away from the desk is not an option? Most of us still end up being at our desk for 8 hours of the day or even more. One might argue that the chairs that we use are ergonomically well designed but being seated for long hours at a desk is considered as a health risk and is now making even bigger headlines.

Seating for long hours is now stated as ‘more hazardous than smoking’. This argument has now led to a new era of ‘standing desks’ with a wide range of products already available in this category. Here’s one which caught my fancy, as it not only solves the problem of being seated for long - it can be easily converted from sitting to standing position - but also has many other benefits. The designer’s Fraser Callaway, Oliver Ward and Matt Innes from New Zealand, first thought of this idea (as a joke) when as students, they were repeatedly told by studios “we can’t have interns in our office as we don’t have enough desk space available”. They decided to solve this problem by creating a desk which can be easily carried and used anywhere and named it ‘Refold’.

Refold desk It’s a desk made entirely from cardboard that can support the weight of a person. It’s 100% recyclable, weighs just 6.5kg and folds up in seconds to a self-contained carrycase for maximum portability and easy storage.

The way we work is changing We are more mobile and more connected than ever before, we have the ability to work from almost anywhere at any time, but our workspaces have been slow to reflect this. Refold’s cardboard standing desk helps to facilitate the modern workflow by allowing flexibility and aiding collaboration. The potential applications for these desks are endless. They could be used for schools, creative studios, pop-up stores, mobile offices, hot-desking, disaster relief or simply if you want to try a standing desk.

Standing The desk was designed as a standing desk for multiple reasons. First, research shows that when you’re standing you’re more likely to engage with others, share your ideas and work together. Standing also increases productivity but most importantly creates a healthier work environment. Human beings are not designed to sit in the same place for hours on end. Research shows that sitting causes irreversible damage.

r. Hamir shares his experiences b ehindthe conceptualiz ation of this space. One of the first

priorities that strike one, while designing a home is selecting the optimum furniture and colour palette for the interior spaces. Hamir and his team were asked to design a home with a mature, aesthetically pleasing and an international design blended in it. With a Canadian education and International exposure, Hamir is successful in creating an elegant blend of furniture and overall space in design. Living room in this apartment is designed with a very specific ideas and thoughts of being very simple and functional in its use. Hamir adds, “We highlighted certain spaces by using different materials and its texture. We decided to use indirect lights, table lamp shades and floor lamps, as this helped in achieving a much chic look and feel. We highlighted the living area wall by using natural fire bricks, which gave the whole space its character and with the grey wood flooring the space looks more mature and aesthetically pleasing.” A lot can happen over a cup of coffee,

isn’t it? We step into the other functional space of this house, the kitchen. Though small,Hamir is successful in designing a modular kitchen that needs to be both beautiful and functional. Modular kitchen is designed with Vatrified Tile finish shutters with beautiful chamfered details for shutters. This kitchen is totally functional.

The bedroom space is the place we recharge our mind, soul and body here, after our hard day’s work. Both the bedrooms of this home are kept simple with wooden flooring and a double bed, with a very minimalistic approach. “Our design philosophy is based on the uniqueness of each project, its particular needs, location and placement within the urban fabric that generates a quality distinctly of its own. A good design improves the quality of urban as well as social life and we the architects play an important role in this development,” adds Hamir.

Uneven, Vadodra took care that no tree was damaged and no built mass hindered the growth of the trees. The architecture of this weekend home is open to light and air. Both the interiors and the exteriors are smartly connected with the tune of nature. The ground floor includes a formal living room, family sitting, kitchen, dining and a bedroom. The open plan of the home connects one to the swimming pool and the garden. The first floor has two bedrooms and an open terrace overlooks the club house. There is a fresh take on the interiors that captures the magic of living. It is sophisticated but down to Earth at the same time, naturally free from any visual distraction that welcomes the flow of activity as the host extends warmth and hospitality to their family and friends. The interior opens to the sky with large glass openings and a huge skylight to reflect upon. The dining, a double height area, is designed unusually with bench sitting rather than chairs to give the feeling of a casual outdoor picnic. The overall colour palette has been kept balanced with whites, blues and browns to achieve natural order, calm and tranquillity.

DM: Tell us how Clusterstone is unique? DS: The clusterstone is a unique innovation consisting of a selection of stones, blended together to form a stone panel. Each stone is an exact replica of nature and is carefully selected according to the size, shape, texture and colour, giving a finished look with a natural touch and can be applied to any existing surfaces, be it indoors or outdoors. The cluster format of stones makes it easy for DIY (Do It Yourself) for self build customers. The product does not require any professional fitter, as required for natural stone application. The application process is extremely fast as the clusterstone adhesive, which is a premixed polymer based adhesive takes only 15-20 seconds for the stone to get fixed on a wall. The earthly colours of this product add a serene touch to the ambience. We even offer customised colour solutions as per the needs of our clientele. The major USP of our product line is its water absorption rate that is merely 5% as compared to a normal stone and it is algae and fungi resistant. It is green and sustainable as 80% of the raw material is made from recycled material and the final product can be 100% recycled. We are proud to say that the renowned architects and interior designers have used our products in their prestigious projects and not only the designers, we cater even to the leading corporate. With great passion and hard work, we have a history of completing more than 700 projects. DM: We would like to know about Concrete Floors ? HP: Decorative Concrete Floors are created by using a super strong concrete mix, stamped with specialized textured mats to create a surface texture that resembles natural stone, brick, paving or any other of countless variations. A colour hardener of choice is then added to add colour to the concrete. Next, the surface is sealed to protect it from the elements and keep it in pristine condition for years to come. This flooring system is nonporous, impermeable, which means that weeds can’t grow through it and that stains such as oil can be easily cleaned off. The colours are 100% UV stable and will not fade away as a result of direct sunlight. This flooring provides one with a clear, sharp impressions that enhance the finished appearance to any new landscape. Price range: Rs. 90 to 1200/ sq ft. DM: Does Flex stone offer something beyond imagination? The corridors are designed with a slight change from the contemporary space designs, combined with subtle hints of tradition, local colours of reds and saffron. The tree of life, the art form is the centre of attraction in this area. One of the challenging elements of this hotel was its low ceiling slab heights and this constraint was overcome by the lighting installations implemented in the mid wall, adding to a floating feeling in the overall space. The rooms are compact but have all the features and more. The first “wow” factor come from the missing TV, which remains hidden behind a mirror till one reach for the remote button. Tiny green bonsai, a cream and brown scheme, add to the serene design, when combined with textures and walls into a contemporary but practical setting. Elaborating on the challenges, Jehan – Ara says, “ The designing of this space was a real test of our designing skills. Located in a prominent yet busy location, we designed the room windows with external louvers to insulate the guest against sound and light.” Contemporary art fuses with an elegant touch of tradition in every swiftly made project designed by this versatile designer. The terrace restaurant of this hotel is designed for multi tasking, to host musical performances or enjoy as a lounge area. A cool get away with cosy corners, waterfalls, and pebble stone flooring, will refresh and boost the energy

The large windows allow a seamless transition, bringing the outside elements into the interior. Theatrical lighting, designed to highlight the features of the special show kitchen, sets the mood in the evening and complements the interior and exterior design elements. Ar. Jehan Ara is known for designing a wide array of projects, ranging from residences, offices, hospitality; sites of a number of industrialists, corporate heads and renowned personalities of the country. What distinguishes her firm is their ability to offer services that are unique to the customer and creating tailor-made design solutions that are specially conceptualized, transforming the clients’ vision into visual grandeur in a good way. www.jjpoonawala.com

Tanzania. Let’s begin with a southern flavour - the Chennai project, ‘Kalanjiam Hardware Showroom’. It’s located in a typical South Indian market, a very congested and crowded thoroughfare called Devaraja Mudley street, in the Park Town area of Chennai. The shop-floor area is more than 7,500 sq.ft., still one can be stunned by the impressive showroom décor details right from the entrance itself. Standing just outside, in the lane, one can clearly differentiate it from the other showrooms of the area. The owner’s initial brief gave a free hand to the architectural team provided they refrain from any human or animal prints in the design, owing to his faith in Islamic preaching. The team assured him of their full understanding and promised to abide by his sentiments completely. The team decided to opt for a clean glass and steel structure throughout the décor theme, beginning with Sales Counter, right at the entrance level. Even though this was for a hardware showroom, none of the regular articles are displayed other than some reputed brand names, which certainly was a very brave move. Instead, they’ve designed a conference area where people can sit comfortably and are surrounded by all kinds of branded hardware. This has created a layer of separations between the counter sale to live demo product display, where not only the customers, but the interior designers and their field contractors can easily understand the importance and suitability
