he last two months were filled with excitement, while shaping up the best content for this issue. Meeting, interacting and spending a cosy time with designers for our cover stories have always been a great learning experience for me. In this

issue, we have a versatile designer Ar. Achal Kataria from New Delhi and I am sure the readers would be awe stricken, glaring at the vivid range of projects undertaken by his design firm. Hope you enjoy the candid tete-e-tete, we had with the AKA team. Last year, during this same time span, I remember making an insightful piece on One Avighna Park and this year again, my enthusiasm took me to the site of this cluster redevelopment project and I learnt that this project is a proud recipient of 26 prestigious awards including Best International Residential High Rise development by IPA, London, back to back for two consecutive years. I was enthralled by the interiors of the luxurious show flats with an inviting galore at One Avighna Park. Pondering to know more! Read the Luxury Design in this issue, for the right answer. My heart leaped with joy, meeting the shining stars at Nirmala Niketan. Their creative design pieces are indeed breathtaking and I am happy to bring in a few catchy designs in the Creative Ideas segment. I would ask all our readers to encourage these young guns, with a little note of inspiration and our Inbox column will be your messenger. Our happenings and event reports will update you regarding the upcoming industry news and trade events to be held in the next two months. Soon we will be back with our 4th anniversary issue, don’t miss it!

INBOX

It’s really a nice feeling to see my work featured in the latest issue of Design Matrix. I would say your editorial team has done a wonderful job in terms of selecting the projects and placing the same under different categories. Design Matrix is synonymous with perfection.

Priyanka Sawant Pune

I would say Design Matrix is an outstanding design magazine. I love the layouts and the concise details on every project. The images appeal the most and the best is always conveyed by you.

Ar. Sunil Deshpandhe Aurangabad. The article on our works featured in the last issue, was a great pleasure to read and has come out well. We thank the Design Matrix team for the efforts in bringing out a nice piece on us and other designers. All the best!

Anuja Pawar Bengaluru

The last issue of Design Matrix was highly impressive and evoked a great magical reading experience. All the articles flowed well. The cover story on Ar. Niroop, was well presented and following articles, right from Ar. Canna Patel’s blissful home to PI designs cuddly home and Ar. Nitin Thakur’ home with beauty and utility all were great pieces to read. The international project was an eye opener for not only designers but also the layman about sustainability. The distressed furniture by Twinkle Khanna was breathtaking. I congratulate team Design Matrix for a great work put in all issues and bringing in quality text and interactive and informative images together. Keep it up!

Muneeb Duberia Mumbai I have been an ardent reader of Design Matrix. I feel more international projects and product information will add a great value to this publication. The magazine indeed is very impressive and informative. Wishing you all the success for the future endeavours.

Preeti Roy Delhi I am a student of Interior Designing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading the cover story on Ar. Niroop and Rupana. The conversation was interesting and the projects done by they are above the sky limits. The information provided about the new materials is indeed edifying. Being a student, I feel Design Matrix is different and have always admired the students’ work, unlike other magazines.

Ankita Patel Ahmedabad

Creative Ideas have always been my favourite section. The Portico collection was astonishing. I also like reading projects from the hospitality arena and Ar. Samir Dharurkar’s brainy studio hotel room at Host 2014 was appealing. Nevertheless to say the products page and event reports are very informative. I look forward to see more interesting ideas in the future and wish you the best for the fourth anniversary.

Ayushi Sharma Lucknow All the residential projects covered in the last issue were spell casting and alluring. I liked Arty – Techture and the project showcase by PI Designs. The product design displayed at Salone designed by young Avni Sejpal was marvellous. I would like to add, Design Matrix is a complete magazine covering all the major

Founded in 1991, Achal Kataria Architects (AKA) fetch a world of knowledge on international standards and latest technology for application on various projects, ranging from Healthcare, Infrastructure, Shopping Malls, Hotels, Embassies, Commercial, Residential and Educational Facilities. In a candid tete-e-tete with Marilyn M, the AKA team, explains their ingenious vision and out of the box thinking. Words: Marilyn Madathil Photo courtesy : The Architects

r. Achal Kataria, Principal, AKA, spearheads a dedicated team of architects and engineers, sup-

ported by consultants, who are the best in their fields like structural, electrical, sanitary, plumbing, air-conditioning, landscaping, medical planning, etc. His wife Rama Kataria has always been his inspiration and plays an integral role in guiding their team. There are many stories and anecdotes that he has always narrated of his journey from his days at school of planning and architecture till today. The firm had its beginnings with small residential projects and over the years through interactions with a wide range of people from various disciplines, opportunities knocked at their doorstep and they passionately got involved in the creation of various building types and varied scales of development. His three sons’ with a team spirit deliver quality design; Ar. Viraj Kataria and Ar. Anant Kataria is involved more in the architectural process, while their younger brother Vidur handles the interiors and engineering part of any project. Their focused approach ensures intimacy, commitment and personalized services and therefore is certain about

client satisfaction. AKA has always been based out of Delhi and have built projects across the country and overseas. MM: We would like to know about AKA as a firm. Is it more into architecture or interior designing? AK: Our firm has always been more into architecture and master planning, but in the recent years, we have spread our wings towards interior projects. I believe it will be indeed a monotonous task to do the same kind of jobs. Exposure to a wide array of building types make our firm versatile. Therefore, each new project benefits from the application of lessons learnt from working on other building types. I would say, AKA is synonymous with Healthcare, Hospitality and Embassy buildings. We have also gained expertise in outsourcing. We all dream big, isn’t it! At a very young age, my motto was to be independent and without any doubt, I set up a office in a tiny setup. Often one gets better with wider exposure and I call myself fortunate to grab the opportunities that came my way. My passion towards work, sincerity, borne the fruits of success and I often satisfy my clients with timely deliveries. It is their trust that has made my team grow and climb the ladder of success. he Embassy is located in Chanakya Puri. It was inspired by the vernacular of Qatar and rooted in the Delhi. The materials used for construction were all local. The building design was developed around Islamic proportioning

systems, which were rigorously followed in every aspect of design. The Jali was an important element in the design allowing the building to remain cool in hot summer months and designed around light and shadows changing through the day. smooth sound-less metro snaking below. You’re seated under a lush green tree, listening to the water ripple in a plunge pool beside you. The sun seems a long way up given the 25-feet clearance your deck has. Can you imagine this kind of peace above Mumbai’s hustle and bustle and the view of its picturesque skyline? This is not a dream, but it’s One Avighna Park’s reality. All roads lead to One Avighna Park Given this project’s proximity to BKC and Nariman Point, and the fact that it is adjacent to the Eastern Express flyover as well as Tulsi Pipe Road, a secondary access from Ambedkar Road has been planned to the towers. Best of all, the MCGM has declared its surrounding Mahadev Palav Road as a No Hawking Zone thus making it a peaceful and quiet area. The government has proposed to widen roads nearby and a skywalk is under consideration by the MMRDA too. “We will beautify the approach road with trees and take other sustainable initiatives,” adds Kailash Agarwal.

The project is the recipient of a 7-Star Rating from Credit Analysis and Research Ltd (CARE). Speaking of this, Nishant says, “We are overwhelmed to receive this accreditation by a credible agency such as CARE. One Avighna Park is the result of a strong desire to create an absolute masterpiece for Mumbai’s skyline. All of its aspects such as the design, the materials and most importantly, the workmanship more than meet international standards. Our team of consultants and contractors span the globe and are responsible for this fantastic achievement.” Each and every detail has been thought of at One Avighna Park. It isdesigned with panache, and executed with the best materials by a world-class team to ensure a great living experience. It is indeed the blessing of FSI norms and government regulations that One Avighna Park will be home to the last sky villas of Mumbai that truly reach for the skies. www.oneavighnapark.com SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2014 • DESIGN MATRIX 45

Asavi Bungalow Asavi, a plush bungalow in Malegaon near Nasik was born out of a desire to create an open and naturally luminous residence with living spaces around a central courtyard. The clients needed a home that showcased their way of living. This bungalow is a ground plus upper floor structure. The ground floor has living, dining, kitchen and a bedroom. On the upper floor, a building volume containing the unified master bedroom suite, and children’s room is elevated above the ground floor plane. The house has a two-level, monoblock dwelling with a swooping ‘floating’ roofline with a beige-painted concrete, plaster finish outside, and stucco wall finish within. The exterior design is clean and modern, a blend of masculinity, which is reflected in the choice of materials, such as 48 DESIGN MATRIX • SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2014

The design of the same looks like it is done in bits and pieces in a haphazard manner. The sharp edges and the soft green colour with combination of white gives a pleasing and relaxing look. have access from a common lobby. The design idea of the entire apartment runs through a very minimal statement with a few elements of detail

being

an understated accent. The flooring in the living and dining area is a white satvario, which is broken by a solid wooden flooring in the bedrooms. The false ceiling is minimal with a cove to provide soft indirect, general lighting, except over the dining area, as the false ceiling had to be dropped to council services. The designers chose to have a ferden unit for air conditioning. Non reflective soft halogens, have been used for accent and ambient lighting.

DÊcor Aesthetics The living room sofas are simplistic with wide sleek proportioned wooden handles. The seating looks on to the grey tiled wall for LCD. This wall has an under light, which washes the space below. The three free standing cubes with a motif carved on the front side act as television console and additional storage. The entire canvas colour of the living room is of muted tones with white being the larger canvas, the neutral grey TV wall and an accented deep brown wallpaper, behind the sofa running to the TV wall. The wooden strip paneled wall around the window offset the curtains. SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2014 • DESIGN MATRIX 87

Owing to the space constrain for seating a hybrid revolving floor cushion was designed to add in another seating, this allows for an indulging experience of lounging at the floor level with back support and also permits the user to opt for multiple functions like watch television read or chat with friends. Elaborating further, Ar. Arbaysis, says,“We wanted a table lamp, which would not only just add subtle light to the ambience, but would add up to the contemporary décor of the apartment, so we designed a light fixture, which would talk about pure minimalism and add in strength to design by almost being absent in visual detail. We designed a specially fabricated sensuous glass lamp, which also double up as a vase and one visually sees striking flowers lit from a light source

Speaking about the aim behind using this palette, Sarfraz says, “Just as a green tree is the tallest living thing, so should our own pursuit of knowledge be, aiming high and keeping the goal of our achievement (top of the trees) in high esteem so to keep them motivated, we used a décor of warmth in the kids room.” Isn’t kitchen space a corner of fire– Agni? So to keep it in flow with, the living, SAZ brainstormed widely and used a mint green wall dado tile with water jet mirror installations. Definitely it will make the cooking experience more pleasurable. SAZ’s motto lies in catering their clients with a different way of looking at their spaces and thus allowing exploration and experimentation in every aspect of design. The goal is to make a space come to life – to bring unity, yet leave room for surprises and the unexpected. “Our clients are involved in every step of the process and we help them to visualize the final outcome with drawings and renderings of each space. Understanding their requirements, lifestyles and expectations for their spaces, we create environments that reflect their unique personalities and are tailored specifically to their needs”, exclaims Sarfraz. sazdesigns@gmail.com SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2014 • DESIGN MATRIX 99

The clients brief was ‘to build their first project in Ranchi, which will set a benchmark for many more to come! options for the sons’ rooms. Accommodating the standard sizes of the ready furniture at that stage seemed quite challenging. However, the innovative designers have cleverly juxtaposed the imported furniture with its shell. The elder son had a request that he wanted the bold and strong colour ‘Black’ to be used in their room. This room is the smallest compared to the other two bedrooms and using black would mean making it even smaller. This challenge is very smartly tackled by mirroring the entire entrance wall. This at once gives an illusion of the room being doubled in size. The younger son’s room is a ready Italian furniture bedroom set. The design of this set has a retro twist to it as all the corners are curved. The teal colour on the curtains and a wall creates the perfect drama required in the space. The window overlooks a beautifully manicured garden. Another complimenting set of areas in the apartment are the bathrooms attached to the rooms. Every bathroom is well planned and each one is designed quite differently. A herringbone mosaic floor tile in one gives a carpeted look, whereas the floral handmade mosaic show panel in the guest bathroom gives it a dramatic outburst. The master bathroom has colourful rustic handmade tiles, which complements the bedroom through its translucent glass wall. The quirky lights, modern clocks, 3d frames and artifacts used in this apartment strikes the perfect note between style and
