ne evening, on my way back home, some deep thoughts struck my mind. Being a professional woman with high aspirations, I have no choice but to commute every day in a local train from central to western suburb. Often, my friends residing and working in the western suburbs were awed to see me reach office on time and asked me how I managed it. I explained to them it is not just me; a large number of women folk commute daily in an overcrowded train, hanging on the footboards, with no fear of the devil and the sea for earning their livelihood and achieve their professional goals. A local train travel is nothing but a test of survival of the fittest. The history and mythologies often depict real heroes — a superman with a courageous heart. We admire those men, but I ask the women, have you ever thought of the super woman present in each one of you? While doing the cover story for this issue, I got a chance to interview Ar. Bhavna Jacob, a woman with passion and enthusiasm, and a successful designer with the zeal to design. I really had a great time conversing with this booming designer. During the friendly conversation, the super woman concept popped up in my mind, and I asked her if she has ever encountered a super woman in her. Bhavna gave me a thought-provoking answer – every woman is born with a super woman quality. Today, a woman not only takes care of her household chores, but also strives to fly high on the professional front. After hearing her views, I could suddenly feel the super woman in me leap with joy and pride. I am not talking about any feminist ideology or male chauvinism here, I just want to salute the great spirit of woman – hats off to you all; look deep inside and cheer up the super woman within you. I hope all the readers will enjoy reading this power packed edition. With our thinking caps on, we will soon present to you our next issue, a special anniversary issue. To make the content richer, I request my friends in A& D community to feel free to send in designs that you would like to see in our publication. One Avighna Park is a prestigious project by Avighna India Ltd, developers of the landmark project Nishika Terraces. The former project has won several international awards. We created sample flats and a show pavilion for this project. The design brief was to create two apartments (3 BHK and 5 BHK) for a high-end user who has a contemporary lifestyle with Indian roots. The puja room being a symbolic depiction of the Almighty, the art works used is inherently Indian in character. The apartments being on high levels and having panoramic views have impelled the design to be extroverted in character. Even the bathrooms have a good corner view, which we have left intact. A screen is provided for privacy.

The concept behind the design of the show gallery was to keep the original height of the space and enjoy the volume. Most of the products used in this project are designed by us; a lot of art has been commissioned. We have used high-end furniture from Italy; wallpapers were sourced from different parts of the world. The art, the sculpture and murals are a blend of international products. The fittings used are from Germany. For kitchens and sanitaryware, a mix of international brands was deployed. This project is an epitome of elegance – a milestone that redefines the city skyline with its affluent living spaces designed thoughtfully with eco-friendly innovations. It has been a pleasure for us to design a space at such a level with panoramic views.

The brief given to us was to create a glamorous interior of a house for a young couple, bearing in mind the birth of a baby girl. It was a great experience to work with this wonderful couple. Considering the maintenance, a dark colour palette with deep rich colours was used as focal points in the interior. Most of the art works used were customised and some were purchased by the client for which I give credit to them. This house is a neat blend of glamorous look with a touch of bling!

The project involved the designing of an apartment with all amenities and having a touch of urban sensibility for a well-educated and up-market client. The original four bedroom layout was converted into a three bedroom layout with one media room. As high-end customers may be open to the idea of an open kitchen concept, we designed an open kitchen to lend volume into the space. Artwork used is Indian with an international flavour. We designed the interiors of a home for a young couple with two children, set against the backdrop of a typical Mumbai skyline. The client who has a hospitality background preferred to keep her home in pristine condition. We have kept the interior in deeper shades and played around with colours in the bedrooms. The living room and public areas are neutral and metallic, which are evergreen in terms of colour combinations and add a glamour quotient to interiors. Entertainment is a natural affair in one’s daily lives, so we created a media room to have all kinds of entertainment. We have designed a cement wall as the backdrop in the media room. A small prayer room is created in a very longitudinal room tucked away from the main living space. Above all, we succeeded in designing a non-clutter spacious interior with an up-market look. 44 DESIGN MATRIX • SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013

VR is the largest and the most premium film entertainment company in India and is listed as the most trusted brand in the category of entertainment by The Brand Trust Report, 2013. PVR currently operates
a cinema circuit consisting of 383 screens in 89 cinemas in 36 cities across India. The brand continues to expand its chain in the heart of India’s Cinema industry, at Mumbai.
Elemental design The project is situated in the sprawling mall development of Kurla, Mumbai by the city’s prestigious developer Phoenix Ltd. The design brief was to create a luxurious “wow” look and feel with the concept and details. With an idea that the cinema is well organized with distinct treatment and zoning of the three key areas including Pre-function, Gold Class and Mainstream Cinemas, the concept design was to create functions within the spaces that emerge and flow into each other creating a seamless experience. The concept design creates a singular tapestry and interweaves a layer of intricate pattern for every function to make it celebrated and distinct. The designs are brought to life in different and specialized materials with details that manifest themselves in precise functions. The Pre-function is designed as a celebration space with the ticket box as an integral part of the experience. The café SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013 • DESIGN MATRIX 63
concessionaire at the shop front previews the cinema mood with informal seating surrounded by movie posters, artworks, media walls and advertising. The Gold Class Cinemas are preceded by an exclusive access into the lounge with concierge. The Lounge is an experience for the connoisseur with a luxurious setting and exclusive concessionaire. The auditoriums are designed with fully reclining seats complete with tables and lamps for a comfortable movie experience. Lighting being a pivotal part of any design, special mood lighting is created within the ceiling designs to create an integrated experience with the architecture. Lighting is primarily ambient and indirect accent lighting is used on all F & B counters.

Navin Bhai Residence Spread over 5,000 sq ft, the multi-dwelling residential project designed by GA Design is located at Dadar, Mumbai. The project was specially crafted for a business family including the parents and three grown up children (2 married daughters and a son).
Design brief The entire apartment design basically was 2 identical apartments joined together. The client brief was to create a functional, modern and efficient design with a flamboyant look. Keeping in mind the large floor plate, the designers successfully created exclusivity in the design by creating a screen wall, which separated the living room from the entrance lobby. A passage created from the entrance lobby connected the entrance foyer to the bedrooms, kitchen and service areas without intruding on the living space. To create a feel of a “villa” or a “bungalow” in an apartment in a Mumbai high-rise, the living and dining area was separated as a undisturbed zone of the house. Located at busiest junction of Mumbai, the balcony of the house opens out to the entire circle and Tilak Bridge. In the distance the Worli – Bandra Sea link is with the sea view. Even though this apartment is on the 20 th floor of the building, designers have taken care of curtailing the heavy traffic noise by the use of sound proof windows.
Look and feel To suit the design sensibilities and the client requirement, custom made furniture occupies the central part of the project, except a few stray elements like the dining table and a few loose sofa chairs. The material palette includes exclusive marbles, veneers, glass, mirrors, textured glass, precious stones, texture paints and exclusive handmade wall papers. In order to match with the flow of the materials , G A Design specially designed and executed all the furniture requirements involved in the project, for instance– one of the centre tables in the living room has a marble inlay, which has been designed and custom made on site with mother of pearl door handles . Bedrooms have marble side tables which co-ordinate with the marble of the window frames, sofa chairs in the bedroom have leather or fabric so as to co -ordinate with the colour scheme of the entire bedroom, the small shoe cupboard in the entrance lobby was made from veneer and marble. Design Synthesis A long extended porch accentuates a white & grey drive way. Considering the weather conditions, the designers have incorporated timber finished aluminum roof panels, easy to maintain and adding a soffit to the porch.

Multiple seating areas in the 42 feet high living room make it an ideal space for large gatherings which can still interact with smaller groups. A red spiral sofa highlights a small ante space to the living room and also serves a small waiting lounge. The timber finished ceiling to the living room provides unique warmth to the voluminous living space. All other areas on the upper floor look down in to the living space augmenting the feeling of connectivity & volume.
A rustic bar facing the huge random rubble pier and the valley highlights section of the living space. The rough timber bar top balanced on flamed granite sphere accentuates the design theory of merging contemporary and natural elements. Red snake skin bar stools add a pleasant punch to the entire design.

The Maya hotel has been one of the city’s renowned hotels and the firm was entrusted with its complete refurbishment with a programme including 25 rooms; restaurant and banquet halls in a total built up area of 18,000 sq ft. The all-day dining restaurant with a bar and open kitchen has in-house designed furniture that compliments the entire theme and has a creative juxtaposition of materials. Along one length of the restaurant a fabric collage between two strips of horizontal veneers keeps on reappearing with few sets of vertical mirrors (smartly camouflaging the columns) amongst dividers in white lacquered glass pasted back-toback, interspersed by LEDs. A spectacular reflection of this artistic piece is obtained in front, near the bar counter. The banquet designed for a capacity of 200 is done up in sophisticated beiges and browns in veneer, granite and fabric and has vertical mirrors adding to the space. The well lighted rooms over two floors revel in diverse four or five layouts. The rooms (deluxe, super deluxe, suites) in Italian Stone, Wooden Laminate and Glass belie any ostentatious materials that seem an easy prey to attain the colour and vibrancy. In quest of a typical hotel corridor, the doors of the hotel rooms disappear in the background through a random fashion of solid wood strips of varying width and thickness. The renovation which got completed in 2011 took around two years and letting the exterior envelope stand while the interior work was going on, in order to present a pleasant street picture was a huge challenge. Hospitality spaces are almost like a country’s handshake. It then becomes a daunting task to maintain a contemporary theme while keeping the design contextual. The Maya Hotel while maintaining such contemporary conversations evokes an Indian Touch to it through the very careful use of patterns – it throws upon the pictures of a Modern India holding on to its roots – a design well applauded! Also what counts is that the typical restricted showroom street picture doesn’t reveal all from the exterior – the designers’ delve in creativity makes the interiors unfold gradually to give an arresting semblance to the straight forms and shapes. info.chargedvoids@gmail.com 90 DESIGN MATRIX • SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013

Value for money The cost of the product is of prime consideration for any customer. Lé Cdeor vases are available on special price on request. They value your money, so to protect your wooden vase and keep them damage free, Lé Cdeor offers its customers with care instructions for their wooden vases. Wood being a natural material may react naturally with the environment, so during wintry and summer days, one can wipe these vases with lemon and orange oil in order to protect them from devastating weather conditions. One should change the position of the vase every now and then on a monthly basis, not only for changing the ambience, but also for protecting this natural product from the heat. To place fresh flowers and plants, one can use a plastic or glass container inside the vase, as direct water poured into this product can permeate the wood. the Thomas Jefferson Award. Fentress has studios in Denver, Colorado; Los Angeles, California; San Jose, California; Washington, D.C.; London, U.K.; and Shanghai, China. The firm announces the completion of Phase 1 of the new Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX. Designed by Fentress Architects, the Terminal is one of the largest public works project in the history of Los Angeles. Its roofline, inspired by the overlapping waves of the Pacific Ocean, creates a new architectural signature for LAX. The south concourse features new-generation aircraft gates on the west side of the terminal and the three-story, 150,000-square-foot Great Hall offering premier dining, retail and duty-free shopping, and other passenger amenities. walls, new walls were constructed to the existing plan of 2378 sq ft. Discarding the right angle wall; the designers have created desired curves, finished with POP and white paint. The theme being white, Corian was the key material used throughout the house to maintain the whiteness. Austrailan white is used for flooring and Bianco white is used for kitchen countertops and window frames. In rest rooms , Alaska white, slate ivory, natural white tiles are used to create a soft look. Four individual spaces – living, pooja, dining and kitchen are designed layering into a one big space. A corian wash basin with LED is designed in the dining area. The living room has formal and informal seating along with a modern design of a Jhulla. Motorised screen above the Indian seating includes a TV Screen. A false ceiling is specially created in this room with a white indirect lighting, highlighting the curve wall. All furnishings used in this room are white in colour. This house has three bedrooms and one guest room with attached toilets. All three bedroom have cantilever bed finished in Corian. Some false ceiling are designed to flow down and become a part of the wall. The attractive element of this space is the use of back painted glass of pasted shades. The toilet doors level to the wardrobe doors without disturbing the elevations. www.studio5.co.in
