Desmone Architects was selected to design one of the first Generation 4 TownePlace Suites by Marriott. Inherent with following any new prototype release, Desmone has been involved with coordinating design issues with the Client and Marriott staff to develop solutions that allow for the most economical and efficient operation of the hotel. As part of a larger 90 acre mixed-use development, the hotel will help establish an architectural precedent for the development while maintaining the prototypical language established for the hotel brand. The hotel will include 96-units, an indoor swimming pool and public space to support the hotel guests. A palette of exterior materials were selected in order to convey a contemporary look to the hotel and to satisfy the intentions of the Brand.

This conceptual design is a 26-story luxury hotel situated on a 30’ x 160’ lot. The rusticated, four-story base provides public areas conveyed through glass reflecting adjacent, historic street proportions and promoting a dialogue between interior and exterior spaces similar to a traditional storefront. The repetitive mid-section is comprised of one hundred eight guest rooms, and is bisected along the east and west elevations with a continuous light court allowing orientation at each floor’s elevator lobby. The articulated top combines new and traditional materials to define six luxury suites and a two-story penthouse with roof garden.

Across the board, the design modernizes the facility, upgrades the interior finishes, and adds more natural light to the spaces. The outdated lobby has been expanded to link the reception area with the hotel’s main amenities: an updated bar and restaurant, a “grab-and-go” marketplace, a fitness center with pool, the business center, the conference center, and a central courtyard. Exterior improvements include the replacement of the porte-cochere and entry canopies and an additioon to the existing grand ballroom.

Desmone Architects was awarded the DoubleTree Hotel project after the firm entered and won a design competition. The project included a new facade and renovations of the Guestroom Corridors, Pre-Function Spaces and Ballrooms within the DoubleTree Hotel, at Pittsburgh City Center. The unique final product included custom carpets, furniture, casework and illuminated wall panels. A grand staircase and ramp were also added creating an ideal location for photographs during events. Following completion of the space in the Spring of 2010, wedding and event bookings increased by 200%!

The Savoy Restaurant and Lounge project included exterior improvements, interior renovations, a new commercial kitchen, and a rooftop deck addition. The restaurant entrance takes a modern spin on the surrounding context of Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District neighborhood. It incorporates the craftsmanship of the existing brick masonry while bringing in the clean lines of ashlar limestone and aluminum. The folding glass doors allow for additional sidewalk seating, and the covered rear deck provides three-season outdoor seating. As a Design-Build project, Desmone Architects worked closely with the owner, executive chef, contractor, interior designer, and engineers to design a facility which meets the team’s high standards within a tight schedule and reasonable budget. Desmone also worked closely with the City of Pittsburgh to obtain the necessary setback and parking variances.

Osteria 100, a vibrant, 3,000 square foot café, is located in Downtown Pittsburgh near the Point Park University Campus. The architecture of Osteria 100 highlights Pittsburgh’s industrial past by exposing the existing brickwork and bringing in warm, vintage materials like reclaimed wood panels, cork flooring, acid-stained concrete, and oil-rubbed bronze. Large, operable windows and high ceilings bring abundant natural light into the restaurant, completely transforming what was previously a dark, confined space. The lower level features an open kitchen where guests can watch their food being prepared and also a comfortable bar and lounge. The loft-like design creates a sophisticated setting for a business lunch, a few drinks with friends, or a casual meal before a performance.

BZ’s Bar and Grill has a neighborhood bar atmosphere with bitroquality food and a diverse drink menu featuring retro cocktails, craft beers, martinis, and wines. Located directly across from the Pittsburgh Pirate’s baseball stadium, the restaurant’s exterior design focuses on attracting pedestrians into the building. The existing stone veneer exterior was opened up with a series of roll-up, glass, garage doors to create a welcoming indoor/outdoor environment. A prominent sign on the corner of Federal and General Robinson Streets and sidewalk seating help draw people to the facility. The new commercial kitchen is almost triple the size of what it once was. The basement includes a private dining room with bar, new public restrooms and various service areas. Parking will be accommodated off-site, and the existing service entrance and elevator will be maintained for use by the restaurant and the building’s other tenants. The basement will be used for offices, restrooms, and storage.

The Cork Factory Restaurant’s design is a direct product of the combination of creative minds with the power of 3-D rendering software. The project started with a simple hand sketch and, literally within a matter of hours, developed into a full building concept. Desmone & Associates Architects teamed an architect with an illustrator to create a design in real time. In Pittsburgh’s historic Strip District, the restaurant takes advantage of the site’s waterfront location by creating a series of indoor and outdoor terraces, extending over the Allegheny River. The materials of this new, freestanding facility take their inspiration from the adjoining warehouses and marina by incorporating traditional, nautical materials like brick, wood and sails into a modern design.
