Matthews International has occupied the building on Penn Avenue for over 50 years, but this project came at a critical time for the organization. The company was shifting focus, adding and merging departments and expanding their vision. This renovation was to be reflective not only of those changes but a benchmark for future endeavors. We were challenged to design an environment that is immediately inspiring yet a canvas for the designers to showcase their ongoing work. Instead of simply designing an empty box, we created an extremely flexible backdrop that could transform for various uses and showcase the client’s work. Key design factors of this project were to express the personality of each division of the company, increase natural light throughout all spaces, salvage existing materials, add transitional areas to accommodate various numbers of people, and remain fully operational during the renovation. The need to replace the original building mechanical systems spun into a full renovation of the building lobby and the entire first floor ceiling and mezzanine areas. All of the old mechanical systems were enclosed above a hard plaster ceiling with only a small access hatch to get to them. After exploring several options it became clear that the entire ceiling was going to have to come out to make the project feasible. This provided an opportunity to give the lobby an entire new look with decorative bulkheads, cove lighting, and large scale ceiling panels to provide access to the new mechanical equipment above. The project then grew into replacement of the existing flooring and existing guard desk, new large size artwork, and a new automatic revolving door entrance. The challenge was getting all of this work completed while still keeping the building open and the lobby accessible and safe for the tenants. The law firm of Ainsman, Levine & Drexler had an opportunity to move to a new floor within an office hi-rise in downtown Pittsburgh. Desmone Architects was integral in creating a sleek interior for this nearly 30-year old firm. By utilizing current design features such as holding sacred the exterior window wall, all employees now benefit from natural light. Open workstations were instituted to bring down the barriers between employees and assist in extending views to the natural light. Desmone proposed a light transitional interior to make the clients feel at ease during their consultations, while enhancing the employees’ daily functions.

Flaherty & O’Hara, P.C., hired Desmone Architects to renovate their current office and create a contemporary space with warm colors, natural light, and high ceilings. To keep the ceiling as high as possible, acoustic tiles were placed between the concrete beam structure that forms each bay, allowing the duct work, sprinklers, and electrical runs to be exposed below. Each office has transom windows to allow natural daylight into the open office areas while still providing privacy for the attorneys.

Gateway Health Plan moved into their new 110,000 sf Corporate headquarters in April of 2013 taking 6 floors of Four Gateway Center. The project was a completely new space built out inside of the gutted shell. Given their continual growth and constant change in space needs, Gateway decided to use DIRTT wall systems instead of conventional stud and gypsum wall board construction. Only the core areas were built with permanent walls.

Wendell August is America’s oldest and largest forge, producing hand-wrought ornamental metalware in aluminum and other metals since 1923. In March 2010, a devastating fire destroyed the Forge’s historical workshop, corporate offices and flagship retail store. Although the company was able to continue production in a temporary location, the Owners were determined to rebuild. The company decided to rebuild a brand new facility in Grove City, just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company’s new 62,000 square foot corporate headquarters, retail flagship store, manufacturing facility and distribution center recently finished construction and and opened in mid 2013. 2014 DBIA National Award of Excellence

This new production facility accommodates the expanding needs of ProMinent Fluid Controls, an international manufacturer of components and systems in the field of fluid handling. The new development occupies approximately 6 acres adjacent to ProMinent’s existing 47,000 square foot facility. The program includes two-story 5,600 square foot office component that will serve the 16,500 square foot high-bay production area with the opportunity for 35,000 square feet of future expansion. The facility is positioned on a challenging site to maximize building area and to minimize grading and retaining walls. The angular shape of the office building was derived to accentuate the entry area, orient the glazed facade perpendicular and centered on Mercantile Drive so it is visible upon vehicular approach and to juxtapose the office against the box shape of the high-bay production building beyond. Direct Energy Business, one of North America’s leading integrated energy companies, came to Pittsburgh in June 2009 when it acquired Strategic Energy LLC for $300 million. The company signed a five-year lease for 52,000 SF at Liberty Center in Downtown Pittsburgh. Desmone Architects provided interior design and space planning to accommodate 300 people within the space, now the company’s North American headquarters.

Emerson Innovation Center is a combination open collaborative work environment, training center, and private office community. Emerson is a team of product design engineers that spend a large portion of their day working in teams and have a constant need for changing the arrangement of their work space. The new offices were designed to have several fixed collaborative spaces as well as 4,000 sf of purely open space where they can arrange teaming areas using moveable walls and furniture that is all of wheels. Each team member also has a small office space where they can retreat to when quiet think work is required.

Reed Smith LLP is one of the 15 largest law firms in the world. The firm recently leased three floors, or about 54,000 SF in the 20-story National City Center building for its Global Customer Center, which provides round-the-clock business services and client support for the firm’s 23 worldwide offices and nearly 1,700 lawyers. To renovate the space, the law firm replaced carpeting, painted walls and removed most interior walls to achieve an open plan for collaborative teaming. There are few fixed offices in the support center, and those included in the design have modular walls to keep the operation flexible. Because windows line all the exterior walls, natural light floods the floors and contributed to the open work environment that the firm is trying to achieve. The space also includes conference rooms, video conference space, and galley kitchens with seating. This international headquarters accommodates all corporate, technology, warehouse and distribution functions for a manufacturer of hypo-allergenic bedding products. Located on a redeveloped brownfield site along the Monogahela River, the development occupies approximately 7.5 acres of the former U.S. Steel Duquesne Works. Confronted with the challenge of combining an 18,000 SF office component with a 90,000 SF high-bay warehouse structure, the design seeks to create a visually integrated building by manipulating roof forms, massing and material composition while wrapping the most prominent corner of the facility with the two-story mass. The original design allowed for future expansion with minimal disruption to ongoing operations. In February 2007, ATC opened the $9.2 Million, 83,000 SF expansion, also designed by Desmone Architects.
