The project consists of a new multi-denominational chapel for an independent liberal arts college related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The simplicity and truthfulness of symbolic materials, as well as honesty of expression, emphasize the design’s spiritual nature. The sense of journey is reinforced through the contrasting textures of both honed and cleft face slate set in an alternating rhythmic pattern. These lead to the raised altar and ambo platform, also accented with maple woodwork and honed slate flooring with glass tile mosaic accents. A large freestanding cross, placed on axis with the altar, completes the composition and serves both as the base for the processional cross and the backdrop for liturgy. This project received an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects – Pittsburgh Chapter.

Saints John and Paul Roman Catholic Church hired Desmone & Associates Architects to design a new worship facility on an adjacent 12-acre property. The new basilica-like structure is constructed of brick and sandstone in the shape of a cross which faces Wexford Bayne Road. The interior design features large span, graceful roof trusses and natural materials including sandstone facing and cork flooring. Over the years the parish has acquired an impressive private collection of over 30 beautiful stained-glass windows from the former St. Anthony's School in Oakmont, and other schools and parishes throughout western Pennsylvania. These pieces were retro-fitted into new custom frames. The new church includes seating for 1,500, a choir loft, a full basement to house parish offices, meeting space and a grotto chapel with seating for 150. The Saints John and Paul Grotto Chapel became a study in the creation of intimate spaces. Heavy Stone Walls with Wood Detailing express the natural aspect of the grotto chapel in contrast to the lightness of the plaster beams spanning the width of the space. The altar area utilizes an indirect, natural light source in combination with artificial lighting to give the allusion of depth— that the chapel was carved into rock. The reverence of the space balances simple materials, lighting, and subtle detailing that provides an intimate and spiritual experience for the user. This unique 150-seat chapel will be used for daily Mass, small weddings, children’s Liturgy of the Word and Eucharistic adoration.

Providence Presbyterian Church Master Plan Robinson Township, PA N/A N/A Completed Study & Planning
Desmone & Associates recently completed a Feasibility Study for the Providence Presbyterian Church, in Robinson Township. The information gathered through the building committee and Desmone Architect’s observations presented several driving forces of the study. The program included a new sanctuary dedicated to worship only, with space for an orchestra, choir and grand piano. Quality acoustics and lighting will be an important component of the space. The plan calls for renovation of the existing sanctuary for large multi-purpose gathering space, as well as additional conference/ classrooms for various activities and functions. A steep sloping topography at the rear of the property created a challenge by limiting the area any new construction could be placed.

The New Community Church purchased twenty-four acres of land located in a wooded valley, fronting a main road, with a stream running through it. Desmone and Associates participated in a design charette to attempt to discover the limitations and possibilities of the site, and more importantly, to provide form to New Community’s vision. Our solution was to separate the programmatic elements into individual buildings grouped around a central meadow space and linked together with a colonnaded walkway, to provide a campus environment. This had the least visual effect on the site, allowed the project to be easily phased and, with the proper arrangement of buildings, gave meaning to the plan.

Christ Church of Grove Farm’s new campus is located on the site of a former farm. In order to maintain the farm typology of its rural environment, the 1850’s farmhouse was converted into administration offices, the old barn was transformed into an education building and the new church was designed using a pre-engineered metal building. Interestingly, Desmone & Associates’ program solution involved designing the church so that it could later be converted into a gymnasium. This solution allowed the new congregation to meet all of their functional needs within budget while at the same time plan for a cost-effective future expansion.

The goal of the Union Project was to renovate the historically significant landmark building that anchors the East Liberty, Highland Park, and Morningside communities surrounding it. The renovations to the 15,000 sq. ft. stone church building transformed the former church Nave into a flexible multipurpose area that accommodates assembly space for theatre, music, and performance, worship space for people of faith and gathering space for community groups. Additional public areas include a coffee shop and a gallery. Small office space for local businesses and community organizations, studio space for local working artists and open classrooms were also created. The preservation of the structure includes masonry cleaning and restoration, refurbishing of all the original stained glass windows, as well as ADA accessibility.
