Presentation I thought I was an image is a research project and exhibition that pursues working on the appearance of the image’s deconstruction as a mean for approaching reality. This approach is built on the combination of the works and investigation processes of these four artists to reach a deep understanding of the image’s concept. From a practical point of view, the project aims to link the different artistic, digital, material and conceptual languages that combine and work altogether to achieve a new aesthetic experience and a new sensitivity. Understanding the residence as collaborative laboratory experimentation (artist-curator), this experience is developed as a process in the space-time dimension growing progressively with a continuous feedback and allowing for interaction with the different modus operandi. The main goal of this project is to show how the inconsistencies that emerge from the image deconstruction process and its contextualization help expanding the boundaries of the supposed reality. Understanding this deconstruction process as a potential act of creation. Visual and conceptual routes built from the processes of creative work will potentially lead to new connections.

Context This research proposal is based on analysis of the image and perception altogether understood as a stage of experimentation. Aspects such as deception, uncertainty or the temporary state of the works are developed and amplified through the image because sometimes the image is a porous material. This research and curatorial project is developed specifically for Hangar space as a production and research project in visual arts in the open call for cultural agents. Given the nature of this center it is an ideal platform and offers an excellent environment for the development of innovative proposals in the field of artistic research. The project proposed will be undertaken in professional manner using sufficient resources to encourage and promote the interaction among the artistic agents involved.

Theoretical basis I thought I was an image is a concept that originated from the interest in providing an in-depth study on the concept of reality and, particularly, on how this one is assimilated by the analysis of an image, which is ubiquitously considered unquestionable and consistent. Often, we consider that a picture is an unambiguous reflection of the reality, something linked to something concrete, for instance, connected to an objective reality that indeed does not exist as such. Therefore, the reality, as we understand it, only makes sense when conceptualizes, i.e. connects with previous ideas installed in our mind that bring out a response to the external stimuli (the artist or the receiver). In such way, our mind reacts to the reality projecting concepts and images that create and configure every second of our personal reality and perception. Therefore, in the curatorial research project proposed here, we propose to use the deconstruction of the image as a vehicle, method and link to develop another kind of reality. A reality constructed on an artistic and conceptual practice, which is not intended to constitute a whole but an equally valid alternative to the other. .

Relationship with artists With the aim of the development of this research project we have selected four artists. LucĂa C. Pino Marco Noris Ciprian Homorodean Andrea GĂłmez The choice of this four artist in based on the degree of involvement of all of them in research on images through different vehicles, viz. sculpture, painting, photography, video and digital languages, among others. Each one of them is currently developing works that look for exploring limits with a new extent inside the artistic field. The multiplicity of points of view and practices holds the key to open the field to experimentation, a major goal in this research project. A project that seeks to analyze not only the reality through image deconstruction, but also, how our perception of the reality is supported by the experience and experimental languages. Hence, this project would offer a perfect environment to work on the reproducibility, uniqueness, distance, ubiquity and closeness that brings out the prism of reality itself. In each of these concepts, we observe an interesting translation in the visions of reality; images that make us reach pastpresent-future concepts and its application and extension in space-time. We can almost think of it as a theatrical stage where actors and factors play different roles at will. For example, the manipulation, linked to the socio-political reality of the contemporary mass is an accomplice (as in the case of Ciprian Homorodean), or the images, wherein we see a translation of the identity and perception which becomes confused in a distorted plane (Marco Noris work). The image is expanded beyond the material plane, becoming utopia; wanders in its essence and aura for digital media as we observe in the works of Andrea Gomez. And finally, there exists another transient reality which is based on the use of various elements and transforms the space in a picture of probable or desirable result that pursues to amplify meanings (Lucia C. Pino works).

Presentation of the process We are open to different approaches in relation to the presentation of the research processes within the field of image deconstruction. That means that the thread will be structured in terms of the work produced by the artists, taking as reference the line of analysis proposed. The intention is to create a system that allows the connection between the pieces, where these creations may be subject to intervention and interpretation exercises as a method of questioning the image. Thus, the roles can be exchanged and processed with the aim to produce a new definition of the images. In this scenario, the proposals of the different artist who make use of different languages (such as new technologies, sculptures, painting, photographs, audio, etc.) may coexist, not necessarily in harmony. Therefore, multiple possibilities of relationships among the posts will emerge, reaching a level of interchangeability in this common framework of exposure and experimentation. In order to spread the work carried out and the outcomes of this research, we propose the use of digital platforms. The process of deconstruction of the image will be captured through video and photographs. Everything will be documented through a digital platform created specifically for the period of residence. This platform will become another way to expose, smart and continuously evolving, exposing the creative process that is developing as a living organism. This intangible platform will interact with the audience by telling stories through images (as in the Kamishibai drama story in pictures or paper), and, eventually, will transmute into the stage of a personal theater where the artist tell stories that grow and become contaminated.
