GET FRESH
Yummy! I love this time of year. The bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables are plentiful. I no longer have a big garden, but I still plant a few tomato plants and herbs in my back yard flowerpots. There is something very satisfying about picking a juicy red tomato off the vine and popping it in your mouth to savor the delicious flavor. The smell of fresh tomatoes is intoxicating. Whether I am in Edmonton, Victoria, Calgary, New York or in South America, I always seem to end up at a local market, it gives me a feel for the communty. Sometimes I am buying my groceries and sometimes I am just wandering and enjoying the environment. Families, young adults, baby boomers and their grandchildren, everyone and their dog (literally) is there, enjoying it as well. It is so wonderful to meet the people that grow your food, to talk to them about their farms and family and to maybe even learn some new cooking tips, recipes or meal ideas. This year I plan to make pickles, jars and jars of pickles. Nothing is as relaxing to me as canning pickles, crazy isn’t it! But I love to open a jar for a family dinner or bring a jar as a gift to a friend. Made with my own hands and offered from my heart. I am getting my jars ready for pickled asparagus, beets, dill pickles and whatever else says pickle me. Check out our list of markets in Edmonton, Calgary and Victoria and make a date to enjoy this festive way to spend an afternoon. b Fabulously yours! our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by joing to our website.

{LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}
Are you out to lunch? Go on. Admit it. You’ve eaten more Oreos than you meant to. Or you put your hand in the Doritos bag only to find that you have already eaten the last one. Or you wolf down your lunch as you run to the next thing on your to-do list. Busy lives mean that most of the time when we eat, our minds are out to lunch. Eating becomes just one more mindless activity in a day full of not paying attention. It’s not that food isn’t always on our minds. We are obsessed with what we should eat – gluten free, Paleo, low fat, high protein, no carb. We focus on how much we eat - counting calories and points to keep within our daily allotment. But in the midst of all that label reading and weighing and measuring, we really are missing the most important thing. It’s not about what you eat. It’s all about how you eat.
When was the last time you sat down and enjoyed a meal, savoring the tastes and textures, fully aware of what you were eating? If you are like most people, you eat in a hurry, distracted by technology, sometimes using food to help manage your anger, disappointments or boredom. It’s only when something causes you to slow down for a moment that you actually notice food. You smack your lips because a strawberry is so darn yummy. Or you catch a whiff of fresh baked bread at the bakery. Or you hear the sizzle of garlic and onions sautéing in a little olive oil. Food is meant to be a full on sensory experience. Too often, busy and distracted days mean that we miss that experience. We don’t taste. We don’t smell. We don’t see. Most sadly, we don’t appreciate.
6 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I August • 2015
What we do instead is treat the whole experience with not much respect. You see, mindful eating is not a new way to lose weight. It’s actually a gratitude practice. Not just gratitude for our ability to be present and take in the experience, but also gratitude for whatever food we have on our plates. Twelve percent of Canadian households experience food insecurity. That’s a fancy way of saying they don’t know where their next meal is coming from. Food bank usage is steadily increasing. And yet the average Canadian household wastes between 500 to 750 grams of food per person a day, or about $1,500 a year. It’s easy to underappreciate and waste food when we aren’t paying attention. How can you eat more mindfully? Start by sitting down when you eat. Not in your car but at a table or on a bench or picnic blanket. Then reduce the distractions around you. Turn off the TV. Put your phone away. When you eat, just eat.
Try adding a little variety. Most people eat the same few foods repeatedly. Being in a rut is a invitation to mentally check out when you are eating. Experience your food. Pay attention while you are preparing your meal. Avoid doing five things at once. Chopping vegetables can be a great mindfulness practice. Indulge your senses. Notice the colors of the ingredients. Smell before you taste. Most importantly, pause to honor your food. Take a moment to appreciate all the hands that helped to get your food onto your plate beginning with a farmer in a field somewhere. Give thanks. Say a little blessing. There’s a difference between being out to lunch and going out to lunch. Pay attention to which one you are choosing. b Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. From Field to Fork Have you gotten into the spirit of eating fresh produce this summer? I hope so! In almost every neighborhood you will likely find a farmer’s market, community garden, or private urban vegetable patch. The produce stars this month are easy to find and use. They are usually the staples found in most homes to carry hungry folks through the fall and beyond.
minerals and vitamins in this water-dense summer squash. 5. Potatoes provide energy-giving minerals, Vitamin C, and fiber in this crowd-pleasing vegetable. How to use?
Similar to how I featured the Five Favorites in the July issue, I’ve noted what strong nutrients each vegetable has that are especially good for your body. Please look for organic as much as possible, especially when it comes potatoes as they can be a heavily sprayed crop:
You are probably very familiar with how to use the traditional garden carrot, potato, (red, yellow, or white) onion, and beets. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m beginning to build a soup right in front of your eyes with these ingredients! In my household, and as a nod to my Ukrainian heritage, I traditionally prepare red beet borscht as a family favorite summer soup. Beets are also great to roast, use in salads, and baking, and enjoy as a juice.
1. Beets both root and especially the tops, assist with red cell formation, and tissue repair.
I’m sure you have many recipes that call for potatoes and carrots in anything from casseroles, baked goods, to pancakes.
2. Carrots hold great amounts of vitamins, and antioxidant properties good for eyes, and heart.
Carrots are also great in smoothies, and freshly juiced. I simply must have these vegetables on hand at all times. When it comes to onions, there was one day recently when I completely ran out and seriously, I felt like I couldn’t cook.
Five Favorites
3. Onions contain heaps of anti-bacterial, heart support, and anti-cancer properties. 4. Zucchini and their flowers offer good

Thank goodness I had my garden chives to use! Onions are my go-to for flavor in soups, and salads. We enjoy them caramelized in sandwiches, or as a topping on hormone-free, organic beef burgers. They can also be used in a dip. Yikes, I’m getting hungry! Zucchini Now what about zucchini? Have you ever had someone beg you to take a bag of zucchini from them? In late summer, do you see these abandoned vegetables in the lunch room at work, trying to get your attention for you to take them home? Ah yes, the love / hate relationship with this squash. Personally I can’t get enough! I’ve prepared myself over the years with lots of recipes that include relishes, baked goods, stir-fries, and pancakes. They are tasty, eaten raw with a dip. Lately, our most favorite way of eating them, are as a replacement for noodles. I normally don’t buy too many kitchen gadgets, but I purchased a spiralizer for $39. Great investment! I specifically bought it for zucchini but its other blades can slice, and make other shapes with produce like apples, carrots, and beets. We especially love the zucchini noodles with a dairy-free, and nut-free pesto recipe I created. The pesto can also be enjoyed in a sandwich, or as a dip. You’ll see the recipe for it on the right. Now is the time to get these vegetables while in season. While you can locate most of the Five Favorites in cans or a frozen bag, gardenfresh flavor and nutrition can’t be beat. So go find the freshest vegetables to put on your fork. Your taste buds and body will thank you! b
SNNC’s Perfect Pesto Ingredients • 1/3 cup raw, unsalted organic pumpkin or sunflower seeds • 1 to 2 cloves, garlic, loosely chopped • 1.5 cups packed basil leaves • 1 to 2 organic lemons, freshly squeezed • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil (an outstanding EVOO like our local Evoolution) • 2 to 3 heaping tablespoons, nutritional yeast Instructions 1. First add the seeds and garlic, and pulse to chop up in a miniblender. 2. Add the rest of ingredients and blend thoroughly, pausing to scrape sides. 3. Note: adjust the amount of nutritional yeast to make it thicker or thinner to your liking. The Best Summer Sipping Summertime is a time for entertaining outside with friends……. When it comes to wine, Albertans generally choose red wines over whites. Perhaps it is the long, cold dark winters that tend to make one want to cozy up inside with a simmering beef stew and bottle of red. Or, maybe the fact that Alberta beef and bison, barbecued pork ribs and hamburgers seem to win out over succulent white fish, chicken or shrimp during the short summer season in this northern part of the country. Regardless of the reason, if you are one of those “I only drink red” types, we double dare you to try some whites or roses! Summer is the best time to experience the cool refreshing, thirst quenching pucker of a crisp chilled white wine while basking in the sunshine on a patio deck. Roses are a delightful alternative too and have seen a rise in popularity in the last couple of years. They range from crisp and dry to off dry and quite nice and fruity. Most can be enjoyed alone, (we mean without food, not friends!) not at all “bitter”, and are versatile as they can be paired with meat and some will utterly surprise you with their delicate flavours. Roses are a perfect accompaniment for salads and are the quaff of choice in the
South of France. Here’s some ways to lighten up this summer and experiment with a few delicious wines and introduce your guests to a whole new range of tastes at your next patio gathering! First, grab some ice buckets. They can be anything from a proper one used for chilling champagne to a child’s sand pail, large ceramic flower pot, or a great big colourful bowl. Have fun and use something that works with the theme of your event. Fill the bottom of the ice bucket with some cold water - just a couple of inches will do. Then fill the top 2/3 up to the rim with ice cubes. Plunge the bottles of wine into the bucket so that the ice covers the majority of the bottles to keep chilled. Roses should be served chilled as well, and it doesn’t hurt to cool down the reds for a few minutes before drinking either. A great way to start any party, indoors or out, is with an aperitif - a beverage that will quench thirst, and get both the gastric juices and taste buds primed for the delicious dinner to follow. Champagne or Sparkling wine is a wonderful way to add some pizzazz to any function and is a perfect summer sipper.

••• Summer is the best time to experience the cool refreshing, thirst quenching pucker of a crisp chilled white wine while basking in the sunshine on a patio deck. ••• Like the little black dress, it also goes with everything. There are many on the market to suit every budget. Prosecco is a favourite, and can be sipped straight, or with a dash of a favourite fruit juice or liqueur, or simply add a slice of orange, or a few colourful berries to float in the glass. Sauvignon Blanc is a great choice for a white wine as they contain high acidity and medium to high alcohol. It might be a tropical fruit style flavour from Chile or a grassy, gooseberry style from New Zealand, or a combination from B.C. Either way, Sauvignon Blanc wine will awaken your mouth, tickle your tongue and pucker your cheeks!
Sample a couple to know which ones you prefer. For a fun change of pace, offer your guests a selection of wines in different coloured ice buckets and label them with the name and a few tasting notes. You can choose a crisp, acidic Sauvignon Blanc, a fragrant, floral, lychee-style Gewurztraminer (“Gewurtz” for short!) and a sweeter style apricot, honey, lemony Riesling, to name but a few. Light appetizers ranging from salty chips to succulent shrimp and light cheeses or spicy meat selections would all work well with these wines. {continued on page 18}

ask our EXPERT {Katrina Sawa} Q: I’m not sure how to focus in my day to day and on which marketing activities, it seems there’s just so much to do? A: That is a tough thing for sure, there IS so much you can do as a business owner to market yourself, it’s true. I like to make sure clients do things “in order of importance” for them and their goals. So if you’re looking to get more clients, make more sales or money then you simply need to talk to and connect with personally a LOT MORE people. I recommend figuring out how to reach out to 1000 NEW people every month plus your own database or list that you need to talk to a minimum of about 4 times per month so you stay top of mind. You can do that through social media and messaging people or engaging with them, you can attend live networking events or conferences, you can be a speaker at an event or on a radio show, teleclass, webinar or TV show. There are actually thousands of online radio shows that need guests every week on blogtalkradio.com for example. Celebrating Sexuality If you’re like me, you have heard a lot of contradictory messages about sex while you were growing up. On one hand I was being told that sex was something wrong and immoral – at least until I got married. On the other hand, I was being told that I was a prude and there must be something wrong with me if I didn’t have sex. As a result I had a lot of conflicting feelings about sex and I often felt guilty and ashamed of my own perfectly natural sexual feelings and impulses.
I realized I had let someone get the wrong idea about our relationship.
All of these mixed messages left me confused and led me into confusing relationships. They eroded my self-confidence and made me doubt by own worth, and I made a lot of choices I now wish that I hadn’t made. Sometimes I denied my own feelings and didn’t let relationships develop the depth they could have because I was afraid of sex. I was worried that people would think I was a slut and that would make me a bad person. Other times I did have sex and the results were even worse. I couldn’t savor the experience because I felt so guilty afterwards or
if their blossoms are opening,
It doesn’t have to be this way. These are words from one of my favorite erotic love poems: Come, my love, let us go to the fields. We will spend the night in the villages, and in the early morning we will go to the vineyards. We will see if the vines are budding, if the pomegranate trees are in flower. Then I shall give you the gift of my love. ••• This is a poem about two people who are not married enjoying sex for non-procreative purposes. It is from the Song of Songs which is one of the books in – yes – the Bible. In the passionate words of the Song of Songs we find a compelling and graphic witness to the beauty of the human body, the goodness of sexual desire, and the power of love.

••• One of the biggest hurdles to having a positive relationship with sex is that many religious leaders tell us that sex outside of marriage is a sin. •••
One of the biggest hurdles to having a positive relationship with sex is that many religious leaders tell us that sex outside of marriage is a sin. But the same Bible that people reference to support those conclusions includes this beautiful poem celebrating the goodness of a healthy sexual relationship between two consenting adults. Ultimately the Song of Songs is a book of hope because we so often need to be convinced of the goodness of our bodies and we so often need to have our desire for intimate touch answered by the touch of another. Faith and religion play an extremely important role in many of our lives and I would never suggest that one contradict their own values and beliefs. But I would
suggest that we each need to explore the roots of our spiritual traditions ourselves rather than relying on what we have been told. Then we can make informed decisions about how we will live out our sexuality in a way that honors our own faith and beliefs. When we come to our own conclusions, we end up in a much better place to actually own our choices and our decisions. b Barbara Lee is the author of Sacred Sex: Replacing the Marriage Ethic with a Sexual Ethic and Tension in the Tank: Embracing Interfaith Mysticism Without Leaving the Church. How to Build
Extraordinary Relationships People are social creatures by human nature. We long for human connection. Research shows that when we develop strong healthy relationships that we live longer, deal with stress better, and live healthier lives, and report being happier. Without social interaction with others we can suffer from depression, isolation, and poor health. Some people avoid relationships due to past hurts or sharing vulnerabilities fearing that they will be judged. No one can guarantee that you won’t get your feelings hurt in a relationship; however, even strong relationships have moments of disagreement or conflict. What matters most is how you move through these situations and move forward. You can build extraordinary relationships by investing in what really matters. Before
you can bring yourself to our relationship, you must acknowledge your own selfworth and emotional responsibility. The Relationship Starts With You You bring your own hopes, dreams, and values to a relationship. You must recognize what is important to you so that you do not compromise your values and beliefs. Know what you want and do not want from a relationship. Happiness comes from within. Do not look for someone to complete you but more so to complement you and bring out the best in you. Take responsibility for your own thoughts and feelings. Others are not responsible for your happiness-you are!

••• “The Quality of Your Life is The Quality of Your Relationships.” – Anthony Robbins ••• Bring Your Full Self
Differences Are In Evitable
Whether you are going for a walk, having a meeting over dinner, or schmoozing at a networking event, bring your full presence to the conversation by being fully attentive. Be an active listener by leaning in, making eye contact, and asking questions that help you learn more about the other person you are conversing with.
If we were identical copies of each other, the world would be boring. Your uniqueness is what makes you special. However not everyone may appreciate it and you may not appreciate their uniqueness either. What matters most is using respectful communication. Communication is the key to expressing our needs, values, and wants. You may even ask questions to gain an understanding of your differences. It is easy to jump to conclusions, make assumptions, and place judgment until as the saying goes, “you have walked a mile in their shoes”. The more you learn, the more you can appreciate a person’s differences. There does not have to be a right or wrong way. No one said you have to agree with another person’s opinion but you can hear another person’s perspective.
Focus On Others More We all like to share things about ourselves. The greatest impact comes from focusing on others more. Discover the hopes, dreams, or goals of the other person. Find a way to help them fulfill it. The more you help others, the more you will receive in return. There is no monetary value for what you will receive when you help someone accomplish one of their goals. The happiness on their face will say it all and you will have been a part of their journey. It Takes Two-Share a Piece of You Creating relationships is about forming a connection between two or more people. Strong bonds develop from relatedness. A great way to meet new people is through joining meet up or social groups or sporting activities. As we learn more about others, we learn we are more alike than different. You can share what you have in common and celebrate your differences while learning more about each other. Never stop learning. Develop yourself by taking a class, learning a new hobby, or developing your skills. People are drawn to interesting people. Add value to the relationship. You may even challenge each other to try something new together.
Extraordinary Relationships Time, dedication, and commitment are important in building and nurturing extraordinary relationships. Once a strong foundation is built you can often pick up where you left off. As the old saying goes, ”You get out of life what you put into it”. The same goes for extraordinary relationships. People matter-you matter. Make your next relationship you build be great! b DEBRA KASOWSKI, BScN CEC is an award-winning best-selling author, transformational speaker, blogger, and Certified Executive Coach. Berryliciousness! Have you been dazzled by any berry so far this summer? Sparking strawberries, brilliant blueberries, sensational saskatoons, or ravishing raspberries along with charming cherries are show stoppers to be sure because of their extraordinary bold color and tantalizing taste, almost food porn-like. (Hang on, let’s not get too kinky!) I say berryliciousness! In last month’s July article I primarily wrote about in-season vegetables for the month, with a brief nod to berries. When deciding what to share this month I felt the urge to place these natural treats in the spotlight in order to showcase their beauty and nutrition. I didn’t think you’d mind ideas on how to relish them in recipes too. Peak Nutrition Berries of all kinds are an exceptionally
nutrient-dense food especially when they are fresh in their peak season. The color in these berries are really the antioxidants to help destroy nasty carcinogens. Pick the most vibrant, and firm fruit available. They also contain plenty of fiber to keep you moving, as well as nutrients such as Vitamin C and a whole host of other life-giving properties. You can easily freeze most berries to enjoy in the cooler months but I encourage you to eat the fruit at its peak for its berrylicious-ness! If you don’t already grow them in your yard, you can find them at a farmer’s market, upick, and grocery store or forage for them in the bush! How can I use them? Simply eat them raw and naked. (I didn’t say YOU are supposed to be naked!) There is nothing like a newly picked berry – with a bonus bug or two included.

Cue music. Look at the shimmering beauty. Nothing else between you and the berry. Do you feel the love? Place one in your mouth and close your eyes. Ahhhh... pure bliss. End music. When they’re fresh you don’t need extra sugar or a drizzle of cream to hide the taste. But I can appreciate why you’d want to eat them like my Baba served them! Now how about we get a little more exotic and splash some coconut milk on them, topped with chopped nuts, and a sprinkle of coconut flakes. If you find you need some sugar (gasp) then add a little bit of coconut sugar to give it a hint of extra sweetness if you so wish. By-the-way, pure coconut sugar does not spike sugar levels like other sugars can. Just make sure there’s nothing else listed on the package ingredients. Again, if you don’t want any sweetener, don’t use it! I use berries or pitted cherries blended in vinaigrettes or smoothies, topped on
salads, or layered with Chia Seed Pudding (see May article). Speaking of chia, you can use chia and berries to make a chia seed jam. Just search the internet for either a raw or cooked jam recipe you like. There are a lot out there! Anyway, while I’m not really a jam person, I do love the flexibility of what I can do with this jam once it’s made. Consider trying it if you enjoy jam on breads, or even in Greek yogurt. Lastly, I have fallen head-over-heels with a spectacular summer drink I created using some berries, herbs, and lemons. I hope you enjoy the recipe featured below. No matter how you use these gems, just get them now for their berryliciousness! b About Loretta Friedrich, C.H.N, NNCP Loretta is a Nutritional Consultant, Sprout Natural cConsulting – Clinical Practitioner, educator, speaker, food lover, community supporter, health advocate, and owner of Sprout Natural Nutritional Consulting. {TEA WITH SUE}
Just a Spoonful of Sugar ©
Sugar has been a big component of my diet since I was a young child on the farm. Cookies, cake, and pie, ice cream, peppermints (from Grandpa’s shirt pocket) and the occasional bottle of Orange Crush along with a candy bar at the Saturday matinee. Sweets were offered when sour events happened. Feeling bad? Have a cookie. Unhappy with your day? Have a piece of pie. Boyfriend dumped you? Where’s that tub of Rocky Road? I can even remember my grandmother lacing a spoonful of whisky with sugar and coaxing it down my throat to relieve a bad cough. I was about eight when I learned to make coffee for my parents. Once it had perked for the prescribed time, I added cream and one teaspoon of sugar to my mother’s cup – Dad drank it black, no sugar. Years later on a volunteer assignment to Georgetown, Guyana, I habitually drank tea with condensed milk and a tsp. of sugar. So far away from home, I got hooked on the soothing sweetness. As I watched my waistline expand, I eventually ditched the sugar in my tea and settled for milk. It was hard to give up the other sweets, though.
To this day it still is, because I know that it’s my drug of choice when I’m feeling bad or sad. (Did you know - sugar is addicting as cocaine?) One thing has changed, though – I now pay more attention to how my body feels when I eat sugary foods. It doesn’t like it at all! This change only came about because of a cancer diagnosis in 2011. Research showed that cancer cells have 9 sugar receptors instead of the usual 3 of normal cells. The more sugar in the body, the more powerful those cancer cells become as they consume it. To help me combat the disease, a holistic practitioner gave me a rigorous food protocol to follow. I followed it diligently – no sugar, very little fruit or carbohydrates and so on. I became an avid label reader at the grocery store – bypassing anything that listed sugar as an ingredient. I shed 40 lbs. Four years later, after relaxing my “no sugar” rule, I’ve gained weight and am taking stock. The fact is – sweet doesn’t taste as good anymore. My body feels heavy and sluggish after a cookie or a piece of pie. My taste buds have changed. Fruits and vegetables make me feel light and refreshed.
26 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I August • 2015
In my quest to keep upgrading my food choices, I continue to read package labels. But it’s frustrating because everything is listed in grams. So I Googled: “How many grams make up a teaspoon of sugar?” Four – that’s all - 4! So that can of lemon SanPellegrino - 33 grams of sugar = over 8 teaspoons of sugar! If you asked me to add 8 teaspoons of sugar to a glass of water with lemon juice I would say, “Are you crazy?” Two Chips Ahoy cookies – 2.5 tsps of sugar – you get the picture! The recommended maximum daily portion of added sugar for adults is 25 grams – about 6 teaspoons. Statistics Canada states Canadians ingest 18 tsp. of sugar daily. No wonder obesity is on the rise, and we haven’t even addressed all the fatty snacks! My quest now is to find the sweetness in life that doesn’t involve eating food products that de-energize my body. Maybe I’ll just snack on the memory of all those hot fudge and caramel sundaes! b As a speaker and a writer, Sue believes in the magnificence of everyone. What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? I’m turning 50 this year, and I really see this as a new chapter coming up. I’m looking forward to spending more time with my friends and family, to working less and playing more while building a thriving business, and to driving across the country again, but instead of simply going west to east, I will be sure to visit all the provinces and territories that I can get to in my car or plane or boat. How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? I’ve made some poor life choices, as the saying goes, including quitting school for a while, being a teen mom, bankruptcy, divorce, and raising my children while I was still in school myself.

It’s only been in the last few years that I finally accepted that change is a natural state of being, and when I am grateful for it instead of resisting it, life is really quite sweet. I also accepted that not everyone is going to like what I do or who I am, and I am happy not to know those folks. These regularly occurring challenges help to remind me that everything is temporary – the good and the bad – and helps me to be even more grateful to live a life of my design.

I’m resilient, and although I may not bounce as far than I once did, I’m still bouncing, still learning, and still going! How do you celebrate when you achieve a goal or a milestone? In the past, when I achieved something brilliant I always used to celebrate with food. Tables groaning under platters of decadent delights were how we always celebrated as a family, too…but now I am a diabetic and that kind of celebrating is not really recommended. Nowadays, instead of inhaling chocolate or cake, I might indulge by getting my hair done, or shopping for something new to wear, or if it’s a really big deal, taking a little holiday to one of my favourite spots. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? I don’t want to be cliché about beauty, but it really is an inside job. Although we continue to be surrounded by messaging that includes models who are unrealistically retouched, I strive to remind young people that those pictures – just like a lot of television or movie or social media messaging – are really designed to mess with your head. If you want to be a beautiful person, start by accepting who you are, and by being the best human being that you can be, and then stand back and enjoy the person looking back at you from the mirror. If you’d like to add some lipstick to your picture, that’ll help people give you a second look, but it’s only because your beauty and attitude radiate through you, not because you wear a certain size or keep yourself in a state of poor health to meet some unrealistic expectation. How have business and/or personal relationships shaped your life? I’ve been fired three times throughout my career. The last two firings were a lot tougher than the first one, because I had
invested a lot more of myself in the work I was doing. I poured extra time, more effort, and a lot more soul into my work only to find that my “extra” fell short of their expectations. The last time I got fired was the catalyst I needed to step fully into the world of being an entrepreneur and never, ever taking a full time job again. The firing itself was a necessary part of standing on my own in the world of coaching, serving, and inspiring others in everything I do. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? When I get out in nature and remind myself that I am out there for a reason, I get very conscious about my time in it. Whether I am on a quiet walk through trees and dappled sunshine, or sitting with my toes in the ocean, or pulling up weeds around the rhubarb, I take time to breath in the air around me and intentionally connect with the air, the dirt, the water, and the smells that come with it all (unless my allergies are acting up, and then the smelling part is harder than I want it to be). I also love to see animals when I am out and about. Horses, dogs, and birds are particular favourites, and it’s not unusual to see me with my binoculars hanging around my neck, especially early in the spring when their bird’s colours are their most magnificent. What makes you laugh? Just recently my car wouldn’t start, and since this was shortly after replacing the engine and alternator, there was nothing to do but laugh about it. I even recorded a video where I describe the plaintive, short “click” the ignition made. My granddaughter makes me laugh constantly, because her five year old vision of the world is just so honest, her responses are unfiltered, and she is such a character. Pam’s Poudre Douce This is a blend of spices that dates back to medieval times. It is a delicious addition to rhubarb or apple pie, makes a great blend for chai tea, perks up vanilla yogurt, and makes a decadent addition to your oatmeal at breakfast, or rice pudding after dinner. When you create a spice blend, it’s essential that you use the freshest spices and that they are of the highest quality that you can afford. Don’t dig out some tin that you’ve kept hidden at the back of your pantry for the past four years or the flavour just won’t be the same. Fresh spices mean the world of difference in the dishes you use them in. Combine the following: ½ cup ground ginger 4 tablespoons ground cinnamon 1 ½ teaspoons ground black pepper
1 ½ teaspoons ground cloves 1 ½ teaspoons ground allspice 1 ½ teaspoons ground nutmeg Mix thoroughly, and put the blend into an airtight jar or container. For optimal flavour, use it within six months. You can add this blend in place of nearly any recipe that wants cinnamon for the most decadent food experience. I’ll be packaging some of this up for my family at Christmas this year! b
