Editor, Creative Director Dianna Bowes ads@fabulousat50.com www.fabulousat50.com
our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website.

{LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}
Too Much of a
Good Thing The law of attraction suggests that what we focus on increases. That makes a lot of sense. If we look for the positive in life, we tend to see more positive things. If we pay attention to negative stuff, lo and behold we find a lot of negativity in the world. If we believe that there is more than enough of what we need and want, we see more opportunities to attain them. If we do good, then good will return to us. Having an abundance mindset brings us what we desire and a scarcity mindset pushes it away. Abundance is good…except when it isn’t. Yes, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Too much kindness Too much generosity Too much helping out Too much being nice That’s because an overabundance of anything – even the good stuff – causes problems.
Here’s what happens when we give to others in an excessive amount: We get burned out. Caregivers often suffer something called compassion fatigue. When people are constantly in a position of helping others they end up with an abundance of stress. They get run down, have headaches, don’t sleep well, become irritable or anxious and sometimes end up getting sick themselves. Let’s be truthful. You don’t have to be a nurse or a teacher or a social worker to experience compassion fatigue. Something very similar happens in our daily lives when we give everything we have to others, without giving to ourselves. We also feel tired, irritable, anxious or sick. How do you know if you have an overabundance of niceness? I bet you already know if you fall into this category, but see if any, or all of these things sound like you: Say yes to a request when you really want to say no.
6 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I December • 2015
••• Our heads have understood for a long time that we cannot give to others, what we do not give to ourselves.
•••
Put your own self-care on the back burner. Allow guilt to influence your decisions. Sacrifice your priorities to accommodate other people’s wants and needs. If any of that sounds familiar, it’s because we have been taught that having an overabundance of niceness is a good thing. The nicer we are and the more we help others, the more worthy we are as people. Otherwise we are selfish. There is nothing wrong with being kind and generous and yes, nice. Indeed the world probably needs more of those qualities. But when you lose the balance of being accommodating and helpful to others while also taking care of yourself, it’s definitely too much of a good thing.
Our heads have understood for a long time that we cannot give to others, what we do not give to ourselves. Yet we keep making choices to say yes to others to the detriment of ourselves. We talk the good talk that we are doing it in service of them, but what often happens is we become resentful at best and burned out at worst.
We forget that there is no amount of giving that will fill the empty hole we sometimes have in our hearts around our own self-worth. Here’s a way to think about giving to others that might help you make the shift away from doing too much, too often: It’s not your job to heal the entire world. It’s your job to do your part. So whether it’s within your family or your community, figure out what your part is and be okay with saying no to fixing the entire problem. Do what you can do well, and let go of the rest. In order to do your part well, you need time to attend to your own physical, emotional and spiritual needs. An abundance of self-care means an abundance of energy available to give back. That’s a good thing. g Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. Food, Glorious Food! Food, glorious food Hot sausage and mustard While we’re in the mood Cold jelly and custard! ~ lyrics from the movie, Oliver!
we have a respect for food and in turn we will receive the most nutrients from it by doing so. How? When we make a point of focusing on what we’re eating, our digestion improves. And when digestion is supported, nutrients will make their way to the other body systems to make your body stronger. Yippee!
Ah yes, food. Abundant, glorious food.
Honouring your culture
Do you have a treasure-trove of delights, treats, and a well-stocked pantry of goods waiting to be shared at your holiday party or dinner feast? Last month I talked about taste. That every day we choose to make time to pause to taste the food, I suggest we are recognizing the importance of it;
I am of Ukrainian ancestry. At large family gatherings we may have traditional dishes like nalysnyky, holubchi, kobassa, varenyky, and others. Food definitely is plentiful! This food is a way to honor our culture. However, food practices and favorites are an individual choice.
8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I December • 2015
Just because I’m Ukrainian doesn’t mean I have to like that food. It may be your preference to focus on another culture outside of your own; you’d much rather enjoy the food from other traditions. What is a favorite food from any nation, whether it is your own or another, that you enjoy? I challenge you to not just be a consumer of the food but learn about the history, actually prepare it, and then share it whether at a festive event or on a Monday night at home with family or friends. At this time of year you may feel overwhelmed with the available nibbles within reach at home, work or play or at Grandma’s house. Those gatherings with abundant food can result in having the scale point in the wrong direction! Consider these reminders to help you avoid overeating: 1. Breathe – inhale through the nose, hold for a few counts, exhale through the mouth 2. Pause for thanks – close your eyes if you like to be less distracted by your environment 3. Chew –grind the food so that it becomes easier on digestion Whatever food dishes you select to recognize any occasion, it is about your individual food story. No matter if it’s your culture or another it validates your identity. I leave you with a little story of what is one of our traditions, and a picture of one of my favorite ways to enjoy bocconcini balls, basil, and tomatoes. While it’s not Ukrainian food, it is part of my food story. Christmas Tradition After church on Christmas Eve, it’s become a custom for us to enjoy a plate of Italian nibbles before we open gifts. Along with raw vegetables like carrots, peppers, and
broccoli, we have prosciutto ham that’s been wrapped around either a pear or an apple, an assortment of interesting cheese, plenty of antipasto (artichokes, olives, etc.), and a trio of bocconcini balls, basil and tomatoes. We’ll also have top quality bread from our local baker with ultra-premium extra virgin olive oil, and balsamic vinegar from our favorite purveyor. To ensure I get the freshest food possible, you’ll likely find me at the bakery for that all important bread, checking my pantry twice for our tasty EVOO and balsamic vinegar, and finally, lined up at the Italian Centre the day before to make sure we have plenty on hand for our important tradition. g Enjoy the gatherings, taste your food, and celebrate!

May The Bubbles Be With You
Taittinger (Tat –on jay) Champagne. Just saying it, evokes elegance, sophistication, celebration. The name rolls off your tongue like the bubbles in the glass. Mmmmm! My job sucks. Recently,I had the task of participating in a Technical Champagne tasting class at The Hardware Grill in Edmonton put on by Pacific Wine & Spirits. On his third visit here, Mr. Mikael Falkman, the International Brand Ambassador for Taittinger, led us through 7 different styles from this famous Champagne House. It was a delicious and fascinating experience. Taittinger, a family run business, own over 288 hectares of prime land and control 50% of all the grapes grown within their own Grand Cru estates throughout 34 villages in the Champagne AOC. They are world renowned for producing a Champagne style that is light, elegant and feminine. Primarily a Chardonnay house, this grape variety gives the wine a citrus elegance, and is best for aging in the cellar. All styles of their Champagne contain 9 grams of sugar.* Taittinger has the capacity to produce
350 million bottles (750mls) annually. When asked why Champagne was so expensive, Mr. Falkman replied “ For many reasons.The soils where the grapes grow are unique compared to anywhere else in the world. There is a unique minerality from the once ancient seabeds, it is grown very far north and grapes are harvested when they have high acidity. These two characteristics impart a strong, intense flavour not found in other sparkling wines.” “As well” he continued, “land sells for 1 million Euros per hectare, a 750 ml bottle contains 1.5 kgs of grapes at 6.50 Euros per kilo. Add the bottles, corks and aging, it is not a cheap wine to produce.” I prefer to see it as Affordable Luxury. There is no other wine like it.” I would have to agree. I like to refer to Champagne as “the little black dress” of the wine world. It’s elegant, classy and goes with everything. You can drink it with anything, at any time of the day or night. It doesn’t leave crumbs in the bed, and science has proven it will improve your memory. With all this going for it, how could you turn down a glass or two?

••• “You can drink it with anything, at any time of the day or night. It doesn’t leave crumbs in the bed, and science has proven it will improve your memory.” ••• What we tasted: We started with the Brut Reserve which is their signature Cuvee done in the house style which has spent 3 years on the lees and imparts delicious yeasty, toasty and brioche notes. 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 25% pinot Meunier. Suggested Retail $60. The Prestige Rose NV, is their second most popular selling style. Blushing a sublime shade of peachy salmon, the addition of a still Pinot Noir controls the optimum colour hue. No tannins are present in the taste and the Pinot Noir dominates beautifully. Grapes are sourced from the 34 villages and the wine rests on the lees for up to 3 years comprising the same percentages of grapes to the Brut. Suggested Retail $97 Prelude Grande Crus NV was gorgeous. 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir sourced exclusively from Grand Crus vineyards. (There are no Grand Cru Pinot Meunier vines). Resting 5-6 years on the lees, this wine comprises 80% of the 2008 vintage and 20% of the 2006 and 2007. Making a consistent non-vintage champagne is tricky. Taittinger has mastered it perfectly. This wine can age in cellars very well. Suggested Retail $97 Brut Vintage 2005 2005 was a very hot year. Only Grand Cru and Premier Cru grapes were used in the production which has created an exceptionally delicious and age worthy Champagne. Smooth, elegant fullness on the palate with the signature toast and brioche flavours bursting in your mouth. Suggested Retail $97
Blanc de Blanc Comtes de Champagne Brut 2005 This is an extraordinary and special Champagne. Made with 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay grapes sourced from only 5-6 villages it is named after Count Thibault IV, a colourful character from the 1200’s. He boasts being also the King of Navarre and Count of Champagne, as well as a troubadour and crusader. This wine is the only Champagne with the word “Champagne” actually in the name. The Taittinger family were granted permission to use the old family crest on the label in 1952 and continue to produce this style 34 vintages later. 95% is aged in steel barrels, 5% in New French oak exchanged in the third year. It spends 8 – 10 years on the lees. Bright, with wonderful acidity and bursting with flavours, it imparts a special nose and taste due to its time in oak. It garnered 93 points from Robert Parker. Suggested Retail $237 Nocturne Sec NV *The only style made with a dosage of 17 grams of sugar, this wine was designed for parties, late night celebrations and having lots of fun. By no means sweet, Nocturne is a smooth style of Champagne which can be consumed easily and pairs wonderfully with seafood, sushi, and foie gras. Suggested Retail $73 Copyright October 2015

Why Everyone Should Have a
Many people have to do lists of tasks and errands that need to get done that roll out like Santa’s Naughty and Nice List. Fewer people have a bucket list of all the places they would like to go, people they’d like to see, and the things they would like to do. A bucket list represents all those things you would like to accomplish before you “kick the bucket” or pass on from this world. This bucket list captures and holds your hopes and dreams. In 2007, I watched the adventures of Morgan Freeman (Carter) and Jack Nicholson (Edward) in the Hollywood film called “The Bucket List”. If you have not seen this movie, it is a must to put on your to do list. Two strangers, an unlikely pair, one enormously rich and divorced four times (Edward) and the other working class and faithfully committed to his wife (Carter), share a hospital room-both with the same cancer and same prognosis. One of the men, Carter had a “bucket list”. I do not want to spoil the movie if you have not seen it. This movie inspired me to make my own bucket list. My list gets longer and longer all the time as I learn of new things to add to it.
Good thing I want to live until I am 103 years old. Many people ask me, “Is it bad to not to have bucket list?” I think people have a running mental list of what they would like to see and do but until it is on paper rarely does it transpire. Making a list really makes you think about what is important to you, why you are here, and the legacy you wish to leave. My bucket list has had a variety of things such as swimming with the dolphins, going to a luau, and running on the beach to attending Diner en Blanc, a pop-up dinner with a secret location where linens and clothing are donned in white. One of my bucket list items was to “Watch the children's eyes light up when they opened my shoebox.” Growing up, my family and I prepared shoeboxes to be sent to orphanages in Ukraine. I wanted to go and deliver the boxes myself; however, at the time I wrote my bucket list, I felt my children were too young for me to do this and I could not afford to go. I thought maybe someday I would have a trip sponsored for my family and I. Meanwhile, I reviewed my list.

Making It Happen
One Sunday when I was looking over the church bulletin, I saw a request for community support for local school. I phoned up the vice principal of the school and shared my dream only to learn that his mother was the one who shipped those shoeboxes to Ukraine all those years. How wonderful! Because I was not going to Ukraine, I decided to adapt my dream to fulfill needs in my own backyard. The first year, along with family, friends, and colleagues, we delivered over 120 Christmas shoeboxes. It was so rewarding to watch the children's eyes light up. The following year, we were asked if we could feed the children. My first thought was “I do not know how to do that!” but all I could visualize was a child looking up at me with an empty plate-feed me. So I said, “Sure!” My husband proclaimed, “What did you get us into now?” I said, “Don't worry I don't know “how” but “I will figure it out”. I e-mailed all of our family and friends and started to spread word. Donations started to flow in. Shoeboxes decorated with pretty paper start stacking up. The local culinary arts school and the owner of Jitterbee pancakes came on board. The Spirit of Christmas Pancake Breakfast and Shoeboxes for Kids was born. The Spirit of Christmas Shines Through
Who knew 8 years later my family would be spearheading a legacy of serving over 5000 children. We re-create Christmas morning with a pancake breakfast followed by the chorus of singing elves, a surprise visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus and of course, gifts for all. The greatest part of our visit is surprising a gym full of children with gifts. I am sure the roof of the school lifts a couple of inches every time. Every child gets a shoebox filled with treasures that includes seven standard items: a
toque, mitts, a pair of socks, a granola bar, a juice box, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. Excitement builds as every child must wait until each child has their gift. And thenwith the cheer and 3-2-1 countdown, they all open their gifts at the same time. Tears of joy and excitement stream down the faces of the volunteers (aka elves) and teachers. The children are beaming and their eyes sparkle with enthusiasm. Each year is just as rewarding as the first. Each year we start with nothing and end with nothing but hearts filled with joy and abundance. Bigger and Better than Expected
I never thought a single bucket list item would create such a production. The stories that have been shared have touched the hearts of many. I know that I cannot accomplish this on my own. I am grateful for all of our family, friends, colleagues, volunteers (pancake flippers and shoebox stuffers and checkers), media, businesses, and associations that help make this happen. Without them this event would not be possible.

••• “One day, you will wake up and there won’t be any more time to do the things you wanted to. Do it now” – Paulo Coelho ••• There would be some hungry children without a gift. It is a true story about giving and receiving. We give but receive so much more. So why is it important to have a bucket list? Let Me Count the Ways There are several reasons why everyone should have a bucket list: 1. Living a Life With No Regrets. By listing out what you want to do, the places you want to go to, and the people you want to see and acting on those items, you live a life with no regrets. 2. Anticipate Your Next Adventure. Planning to fulfill an item on your list leads to anticipation of your new adventure. It can also be your motivator when you feel stagnant or hit one of life's obstacles. 3. Better than You Expect. Be open to new opportunities. Just because something isn't on your bucket list, doesn't mean you can't add it. Sometimes the greatest adventures come from the change of plans or meeting others along the way. Leave room for spontaneity. Your adventure can be better than ever. 4. Inspire and Impact Others Along The Way. When others see you living out your dream, you inspire others to do the same with theirs. A ripple effect is created. 5. Be a Piece of Someone's Puzzle. Because you followed through on your bucket list item, you may have helped someone fulfill one of their own dreams because they are part of or learned of your story. 6. Share Your Bucket List. People naturally want to help others. Not only do they
want to help but they want to hold you accountable for what you say you want to do. People who don't even know you will be drawn to your vision and want to be a part of it. And the list can go on and on… Write out your bucket list. There are no rules dictating the right or the wrong wayit is your full of your choices, wants, and desires. Don't get fixated on the “how” you will accomplish those items. Remember your “why”. There is never a right time. The right time is NOW. If not now, then when? One of my favorite quotes from “The Bucket List” is this: “One day your life
will flash before your eyes-make sure it's worth watching." g DEBRA KASOWSKI, BScN CEC is an award-winning best-selling author, transformational speaker, blogger, and Certified Executive Coach. Free to Be Me I recently attended an event where we had to stand up, introduce ourselves and share one of our fears. Well, I stood up, stated my name, my company and then when I went to state my fear something else came out of my mouth. I wanted to say being vulnerable, but I couldn’t even say it – it made me feel too vulnerable! Crazy. I have carried a belief that vulnerability shows weakness and if you are weak people won’t like you as much. So I have been very good at building a shield around me where I reveal only what I think you will like. It’s worked fairly well for me but it’s a lot of work and for a time in my life I felt like I had multiply personalities and was never the authentic me. That changed for me last year when I started working for myself – finally I felt like wherever I was I could be me. But still there is that shied.
Then, this month I decided it was time to take another step in my own personal development and transformation and I managed to put myself in a vulnerable position on three different occasions. 2 went well and one went miserably wrong. Vulnerable
The first one was the failure. I tried to have a difficult conversation with someone close to me, I tried to speak honestly about my feelings and unfortunately the other person was not in a position to receive the information and it has really backfired. Feelings have been hurt on both sides and a relationship has been damaged. It’s been awful and has really been heavy on my heart. I was vulnerable and because I was vulnerable I was hurt. The part I am proud of is that I did it; I spoke my truth in what I thought was a compassionate way and instead of withdrawing I had the difficult conversation.

••• Now the world knows I’m not perfect! But a strange thing happened. I felt lighter. Before the responses even came, I felt relieved and human. ••• After that first incident it would have been really easy to slip back into my shell. To hide behind my armour and continue to let the world think that I had all my stuff together. But to be honest I had a tough month, and I posted about it on Facebook. I am typically very conservative and positive in my messages but I let people know what was really going on for me and how I was able to navigate the situation. I took a deep breath and hit post and then I cried. Now the world knows I’m not perfect! But a strange thing happened. I felt lighter. Before the responses even came, I felt relieved and human. Maybe there’s something to this vulnerable stuff. The response was overwhelming. I couldn’t believe how many people were feeling the way I was and were so grateful to hear that they weren’t alone. That someone had the courage to say it in a public forum. It was a real bonding experience for me.
Through the good and the bad, to know that our friends and loved ones have got our back. That if we don’t have the perfect job, spouse, kids, if we aren’t the perfect size, don’t eat organic, aren’t active for 30 minutes a day and that we cry and get grumpy – we are still loved. That the world isn’t going to turn its back on us. We want that for ourselves and we want that for other people. When we are vulnerable we grow and our relationships deepen. The world is hungry for authenticity & it starts with you. Be brave. Be you. g Stacey Berger is a Life Mastery Consultant and is passionate about helping women discover their passion and live a life they love. www. staceyberger.ca
The third occasion was an event where I was the MC. I told a very personal story around the challenges my husband and I had as we tried to start a family several years ago. Again, the outpouring of love and appreciation for hearing my story was overwhelming. People that have known me for years were surprised to not have known this about me. How could they have – I didn’t share it. Being vulnerable remains a great fear of mine, but as I’ve started to unveil myself it has taught me a few very important lessons. The first is that we are all longing for intimate connection – the world is hungry for authenticity. Also, that we all want to be free to be ourselves. To be seen. To be heard and to be loved.

Now that the festive season is upon us, there is no better time to BAKE yourself fabulous. I love to BAKE each day. It’s what has transformed my life from ordinary to extraordinary. I’m not talking about the type of baking we do with flour, butter and sugar. Although, I absolutely love that type of baking also. I use the term BAKE to remind me on how to live; how to Energize and create Fabulous.
B stands for Be Generous to yourself and others. A stands for Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude K stands for Keep Celebrating E stands for Energize Everything
Nothing makes me feel more rich than when I can give to others. That might be through donating to a charity; volunteering, giving gifts at Christmas, or simply being kind. These are all forms of generosity to others. But, what about being generous to ourselves? Being generous to ourselves is a concept that is difficult for many. We must remember that when we are generous to ourselves; care for ourselves, we ultimately have more to give to others. We can use kind words in our own thoughts; allow ourselves time to rest in between hectic schedules; learn something new; or participate in an activity we enjoy. It really means being focused on self-care, and giving ourselves permission to enjoy things that make our hearts smile.
••• Generosity has more to do with what’s going on in our heart at the time of the giving, than the act itself. For giving to be generous, it must be done with an open heart and no expectations. ••• 22 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I December • 2015
When we allow ourselves to be happy, we ultimately can bring happiness to those around us. Giving to others does not always equate to being generous. Generosity has more to do with what’s going on in our heart at the time of the giving, than the act itself. Sometimes people give out of obligation and not generosity which can be very draining and can cause resentment. For giving to be generous, it must be done with an open heart and no expectations. Equally important to generosity, is the concept of graciously receiving. If we enjoy the act of giving because we love to see others happy, we must also learn to graciously receive. This then allows other people the joy of giving. This is done by simply saying “Thank you” then add a smile, a hug or show joy. Many people don’t realize when they are not being gracious. Many feel uncomfortable when someone offers them something. A complement or a helping hand, for example, are often shrugged off. That is rejection of a gift. Let’s show our gratitude by being open to graciously receive. For this holiday season, let’s focus on generously giving, and graciously receiving. For giving and receiving are one in the same act, always. They coexist like two sides of a coin. When we master these to acts we will naturally celebrate life, create joy and feel energized. Be sure to BAKE yourself Fabulous everyday during this holiday season and the new year. g Joanne Neweduk is the Director and Community Leader for Fabulous@50 Calgary. HEAVENLY WHIPPED SHORTBREAD The key to the melt-in-yourmouth texture of this shortbread is in the beating of the dough. 1 cup (250 mL) butter, softened 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) flour 1/2 cup (125 mL) icing sugar Small maraschino cherry pieces, patted dry. Using low speed of an electric mixer, beat butter until creamy. Beat in flour and icing sugar just until dough comes together. Using medium speed, beat for 10 minutes. Do not underbeat. Place mixture in a pastry bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe 2 tsp (10 mL) measures of dough 2 inches (5 cm) apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Alternatively, dough may be dropped from a spoon onto ungreased cookie sheets. Press a cherry piece into centre of each unbaked cookie. Bake at 350ºF (180ºC) for 12 - 14 minutes or until cookies are firm and light golden around edges. Let cookies stand for 2 minutes on cookie sheets. Remove from cookie sheets and cool cookies on racks. Store, layered with wax paper, in an airtight container in a cool dry place for up to 1 week. May be frozen. Makes about 4 dozen. Good Coffee Does Good Good and Burundi are two words you won’t often hear spoken together on this side of the globe. In fact, when speaking about Burundi you’ll most often be met with a look of confusion, followed by a “What? Where?” Burundi, a small nation of 10 million nestled in the heart of East Africa has faced extreme conflict in the last decades. This has resulted in them claiming the title of 2nd poorest nation in the world. Although from the outside looking in it may seem like Burundi’s situation may never improve, there is hope! And that hope comes disguised as coffee. Good Coffee came out of a backwards approach to business. Upon visiting Burundi the founders of Good Coffee came to learn that 90% of Burundians depend on agriculture for their living. Burundi is also home to some of the world’s highest quality coffee. Seeing the incredible potential for coffee to lift Burundi out of poverty Good Coffee was born, serving
as a vessel for the formation of a better Burundi. Whether it’s a family at breakfast, two strangers on a first date, or you and a Burundian farmer, coffee is something that connects. Good Coffee focuses intently on the transformative relationships that stem from coffee, because good coffee truly does have the power to transform. Good Coffee uses a holistic approach known as Direct Trade, which provides farmers with wages up to 30% higher than those of Fair Trade. On top of paying farmers Direct Trade wages, Good Coffee invests 25% of its profits into the communities in which the coffee is farmed. Every sip of Good Coffee creates impact and connects you to a community of like-minded individuals who all play an important role in the Good Coffee story. So take a sip, and join us as we discover ways to make new connections in unexpected places. g

Meet the Farmers
COFFEE•PEOPLE•POTENTIAL AMANDO HARABANDI Gaharo Hill Amando is 35 years old and has 6 children who depend on the $40.63 he made growing coffee last year. With only 300 trees to his name, Amando is struggling to put food on his “table.” Amando does not have the luxury of a table, but we are hoping that one day he will become profitable enough growing coffee that a table will be no problem if he wants one. We are encouraging Amando to take better care of his trees so that his yields will increase. He says he will give mulching a try. Amando loves meat but does not get the chance to eat it very often. He hopes, in the future, that his children will be able to go to school. BENOIT MUSUKO Rugoma Hill Benoit is 63 years old and is missing many of his teeth. He walks for two hours in order to get his coffee cherries processed at our washing station. He chooses to deliver to the Long Miles washing station because he is confident that we weigh his coffee beans fairly and pay him fairly. Benoit has 4 children that he hopes will one day be able to pursue higher education, like a trade school. Benoit has 400 coffee trees and last year he made $156.25 growing coffee.
CAROLINE NTAWUYANKIRA Civugiza Hill With over 700 trees Caroline is considered by her community to be a fairly prosperous widow. She has 7 children who depend on her. Last year she only made $109 from her 700 trees. We have talked to Caroline about the difference mulching and pruning her coffee trees can make and we hope to see her profits improve. Caroline wishes prosperity for her children and one day she hopes to pass on her coffee growing knowledge to them. Caroline loves bread slathered in honey and she has never tasted her own coffee. CHARLES NDAYISHIMIYE Gahaga Hill Charles has 6 children and a small plot of land with just over 300 trees. He was born in 1961 while Burundi was declaring independence from foreign rule. Last year he made $169 growing coffee. He has to walk 3 kilometers to get to our washing station. This coming coffee season we will have a collection point near Charles’ home, which will save Charles (and the other farmers in his community) from having to make the long and time consuming walk to our station. When we asked Charles what his hope for his children was, he said he hoped that he could continue to farm coffee in order to feed all of them. {continued on page 29}

{TEA WITH SUE}
The Many Faces of Abundance In 1937, writer Beatrice Kaufman said, “I’ve been poor and I’ve been rich. Rich is better.” Our modern society has come to equate abundance with lots of money and/or lots of success. We’re told to generate an abundance mentality in order to draw those riches to us like a magnet. Abundance, according to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English is simply, “a large quantity of something”. Tropical countries have an abundance of vegetation; Alberta has an abundance of mountains. When it comes to money, I confess to having had an abundance of lack – a large quantity of going without. In the early ‘80s, when the National Energy Policy hit the oil patch in Calgary, our income shrank to $800/month – our rent was $500. We had an infant to care for and the usual other bills to pay. We weren’t starving, but pinching our pennies became important so we developed an abundance of grati-
tude for what we did have and could do. Desiring some fun despite our strained circumstances, we created a list of all the activities we most enjoyed doing, along with the price tag for each. Strangely enough, many of the items on the list were things we could do for free – bridge night with friends, walks in the neighborhood with our son dozing in his Snuggly, popcorn and movies at home. I remember that time as one of the happiest, because we found joy in the simplest of things. While we didn’t have a large quantity of money, our abundance was measured in fun and contentment. Just thinking about the story of Scrooge at this time of year reminds us that having lots of money for its own sake didn’t bring Scrooge any pleasure. Where his delight in his abundance lived was in the sharing of his largesse, partly because of the pleasure it gave to those less fortunate.

Coffee {continued from page 27) SALVATOR NTAVYO Gahaga Hill Salvator is 48 years old. He has 150 coffee trees and needs to walk 3 kilometers to the Long Miles washing station in order to deliver his coffee cherries. With 7 children and 10 grandchildren depending on him, Salvator hopes that he will have a good future farming coffee. In the season before our washing station was open, Salvator made $68.75 growing coffee. We are hoping that he sees his profits improve significantly with better farming practices and our premium payment program. His favorite food is potatoes, which are called “ibiraya” in the local language of Kirundi. SPECIOSE MANIRAKIZA Rugoma Hill 45 year old Speciose walks 45 minutes to deliver coffee to our washing station. She lost her husband during the Hutu/Tutsi genocide and since then has been the sole provider for her 6 children. She loves meat and rice and she has never tasted the coffee that she works so hard to grow. In the coffee season before our washing station was open, Speciose brought home $37.50 from the yield of her 150 trees. This coming coffee season, we hope to begin a program that will help widows like Speciose earn more from their coffee trees and plan better for their family’s futures. g

Rich {continued from page 28) His abundant misery transformed into abundant joy when he re-united with his family. It’s true in our western culture that money is important to our lives. But it’s just one source of abundance. For me, I find that gobs of time with loved ones, opportunities to play and create, shared laughter and joy, trips to see our world, along with all the memories that stack up along the way – now that’s abundance! Keep it coming! May you and all your loved ones have an abundance of joy over the holiday season. g Sue Paulson inspires others to love their magnificence. What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life?
people to new friends and experiences.
There are so many things to choose from. I am lucky; I want to live to 103 years of age. Those who know me know I have a tendency to be ambitious. Professionally, I plan to write several more books, contribute to more magazines, and speak on world class stages. I would love to host my own television talk show. I want to mastermind with global thought leaders on Richard Branson’s private island, Necker Island.
Coaching. I love to ask questions as I am naturally curious about what makes people get motivated. Asking powerful questions leads to accelerated growth and results. I help people step into the skin they were meant to be in whether be a business owner, executive, or employee.
Every day I am led to try new things; I want to be open to all of the experiences that come my way. I plan to travel the world, eat delicious cuisine, while I share it all with family and friends. I want to give back by volunteering and connecting
What would you consider to be your top three talents/skills?
Writing. Writing and sharing stories of the adventures I go on and the incredible people I meet along the way helps me relive every moment while educating or inspiring others. Speaking. I speak from my heart. I want people to raise their bar of excellence and become better versions of themselves every day.

In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? My favorite way to give back/pay it forward is when people least expect it with random acts of kindness, small gifts, a greeting card, or surprise visit. I think that is why I love our shoebox campaign – the element of surprise and pure joy! What is your vision of great leadership? Great leaders are those who lead with a vision. They create a vision in which people can believe in. The vision offers hope, growth, and positive energy. Great leaders do what is right even when nobody is looking. They lead without title and can walk with their followers as the work toward a common goal. They are transparent, open, and honest. These leaders know how to actively listen and use words which empower and instill greatness. They a have a positive outlook on life.
Deborah’s Favorites FAVORITES: London Fogs, Good Books, Leather Journals Color: Red Flats or Stilettos: Stilettos (& a pair of running shoes) Martini/Wine: Italian Pear (Pear Vodka, Limoncello, 7-up, and Fresh Squeeze of Orange) Sweet Treat: Tiramisu Vacation Destination: Maldives or Bora Bora Book: The Alchemist Movie: The Notebook Charitable Cause: The Spirit of Christmas Pancake Breakfast and Shoeboxes for Kids

They hold themselves and others accountable by challenging assumptions and asking effective questions. What they expect of others, they expect from themselves first. Great leaders lead by example. Great leaders build people up and encourage them to pursue their dreams. When the people know that you care, they will support the vision. These leaders see each person as an influencer with strengths, knowledge, and abilities that make the vision better than originally planned. Great leadership begins from the heart and strategically from the mind. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? True beauty comes from within. You are beautiful when you take time to value and invest in yourself. Nothing is more beautiful than a smart confident woman who knows what she wants and goes after it. When you are comfortable in your own skin, you help others to become comfortable in theirs.
“Being beautiful” begins with a smile and extends to helping others along the way. How have business and/or personal relationships shaped your life? Every person who has entered my life is a messenger. They have either come to teach me a lesson or I them. The lessons are golden threads of humility, grace, and wisdom. These messengers have become my friends. My life is richer because of the people I surround myself with. They challenge me to grow, see new perspectives, and learn new things. There is no such thing as failure only learning opportunities. Be kind to everyone and you never know when you will need to cross a bridge with them. Hard work, determination, and commitment will help get you to your destination. Your efforts will surpass talent if you persevere. I am grateful for the amazing people I get to interact with on a daily basis. They have taught me to not take life too seriously. I would not be where I am today without these people. Life is sweet! g
