our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

{LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}

Time to Lose

WEIGHT This is the time of year when weight loss takes a prominent place on the covers of magazines and in social media news feeds. Drop 20 pounds in 12 days by eating what you want and not exercising! I don’t know whether you have any pounds to lose or not. What I do know is that most of us have weight to lose. You see we are all dragging around the excess weight of baggage we really don’t need. You might not see it in batwing arms or a muffin top, but there are invisible weights we carry that do damage to our heart just like too many pounds overwork our cardiovascular system. Maybe you have some of these things weighing you down: Regrets We hold on to all that happened – or didn’t happen – in the past and use them as a way to beat ourselves up. All of that

“coulda-shoulda-woulda” stuff that our inner critic loves to replay as so called evidence of why we will never change. Hurts Small or large disappointments or betrayals by the people we love create little wounds that we continually pick at so they never really heal. Sometimes hurts take the form of resentment, a natural outcome of saying yes to things we don’t really want, or saying no to creating and enforcing our personal boundaries. Unfinished projects Most of us have perpetual to-do lists that leave us feeling one step behind where we want to be. The magnitude of our undone chores can be overwhelming. Sometimes our unfinished projects are not yet started. They just sit in the corner of the basement or in our overflowing closets whispering, “Are you ever going sort those photos, get rid of the clutter or organize your drawers?”

••• This year give yourself permission to put something down. Let it go and make this year the year you lose some weight. ••• Other people’s burdens Out of an abundance of kindness and compassion, we can become fatigued with other people’s problems. In an attempt to help and support others, we give and give and in the process forget the toll it takes when we don’t also take what we need. Unsupportive relationships We usually have at least one of them – an energy draining, positivity sucking relationship. A friend or family member who spends most of their time complaining, judging or criticizing, and rarely encourages, champions or motivates us. Do any of those sound familiar to you? How many of them are you dragging along as you go about your day? I’m exhausted just listing the things that weigh us down. Think of what it does to us to carry them around year after year. In the same way we can’t successfully drop pounds quickly, we aren’t going to let go of all of this stuff overnight. But we can make a start. First be aware of

the weight of what you carry. Make a list using the categories above. You will know that something belongs on the list if you worry about it, if it takes up too much of your time, or if you lay awake at night thinking about how to manage it or get rid of it. Then be willing to let something go. Just begin with one thing. You might choose the easiest thing – something you are really ready to drop. Or you might choose the thing that consumes you the most. If you let go of that, the other things might not seem so heavy. You might consider which obligations and commitments are not really yours but you have taken on the responsibility for carrying. Feel free to give them back to their rightful owner. This year give yourself permission to put something down. Let it go and make this year the year you lose some weight. Priority Sleep Sleep is precious. If we don’t get enough sleep we are destined to suffer consequences most of which are a lot more serious than losing patience with loved ones or getting drowsy at an afternoon meeting with the boss! Impacts or symptoms of not getting enough sleep include: • Increased levels of the “hunger hormone” (ghrelin) which stimulates appetite and then increases the likelihood of weight gain • Decreased levels of the “stop eating hormone” (leptin) which encourages satiation and then decreases the likelihood of weight loss

• Interference with restoration and repair of bones, and tissue • Pre-mature aging • Impairment of driving abilities similar to intoxicated blood-alcohol levels as reported on simulated tests even after just only one night of sleep deprivation • Memory loss issues • Irritability • Decreased energy • Lack of proper absorption of nutrients • Depleted thyroid function that is necessary for metabolism, and weight management

8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2016

••• If you choose sleep as a priority your body will reward you with stronger health. Have a happy New Year with lots of sleep. Good night! ••• • Exhausted immune system which weakens defense mechanisms against bugs, colds and flu. • Chronic pain, inflammation, and more In the spirit of making changes in 2016 consider sleep as a top priority to support your health. To help you prepare for slumber, consider the following good sleep hygiene ideas: • Turn off electronic devices at least 1 hour before you wish to sleep • Use an aromatherapy nebulizer or mister with calming essential oils like lavender or chamomile • Reserve daily personal hygiene time (bathe, brush, cleanse, etc.) • Make the room as dark as possible, and consider eye shades while sleeping to block out light • Stretch • Incorporate deep-breathing techniques • Turn down the thermostat to avoid overheating which is stressful to the body • Read a non-electronic book • Listen to calming music or sounds • Have a cup of herbal tea no more than 1 hour before you wish to sleep

Sleepy Time Management I want to give credit to Dianna Bowes for the following practical exercise. I have shared it with clients, during various speaking engagements and now with you. Gals, this task can help claim priority time for sleep by determining where your time is going in the day: draw a circle to represent your day as a 24-hour period. Next, “slice” a segment that includes sleep hygiene and 7 to 8 hours of sleep that most seem to need. In total that could mean about 8 to 9 hours of reserved time for sleep preparation that is absolutely critical for your health. The rest of the circle is then sliced up accordingly (work, play, eating, errands, etc.). Do you think sleep is important enough to reserve time for? Sleepy Time Milk The combination of the relaxing effects of non-dairy milk (or hormone-free milk if you can tolerate dairy) with blood sugar stabilizing cinnamon and overnight-liverfuel of raw organic honey, can be the perfect way to end your day to encourage a good sleep. If you find yourself going on nightly bathroom field trips do not consume any beverage, including this one, less than 1 to 2 hours before bed. • 1 cup almond milk

• Have a cup of Sleepy Time Milk

• 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• Go for a walk or stroll – not a marathon! – no later than 2 hours before you wish to sleep

• ½ tsp raw honey

• Light a candle • Meditate or pray

Heat milk in a small pot just until boiling. Stir in the cinnamon until blended. Off heat add the raw honey. Pour into your favorite cup. Sip slowly and enjoy. Good night. Sleep tight. {continued on page 11} Celebrating baby boomer women • 9

Ayurveda:

Science of Life Art of Living

The ancient science of Ayurveda derives from an understanding of nature’s elemental forces and how they operate in our human bodies. The art of living lies in applying this knowledge to our daily routines and diet so that we can thrive in balance and harmony with our true nature. Every aspect of our mental, emotional and physical being can be attributed to the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space of which we are made and every person is a unique combination of these elements with some being more predominant. Here is a brief illustration of how each element’s qualities show up in and out of balance. Physically, earth is represented in the solid structures of our bodies. Mentally, the earth element shows as a grounded, stable and reliable person. Their emotional qualities are sweet, warm hearted and compassionate.

Out of balance, the body will thicken and become dense and heavy. Mentally, there can be rigidity and stubbornness while emotionally, greed, attachment and depression can manifest. Water in the body provides its most basic nourishment and also the elimination of waste. Mentally, water people seek collective agreement and are peacemaking. Emotionally, the water quality is expressive and naturally protective. Out of balance, there can be water retention, swollen joints, excess mucus, weak digestion and weight gain. There can be mental fogginess that clouds judgement. Emotionally, there can be co-dependence and a tendency to play the martyr. Fire functions in the body as a transformative force. The fire of digestion is the kingpin of good health. Mentally, fire people are well ordered and like responsibility; they are courageous and make good leaders.

10 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2016

Emotionally, fire gives passion and intensity. Out of balance, fire causes inflammation. Mentally, there can be irritability and aggression. Emotionally they can be possessive, controlling and jealous. Air has the function of transportation and movement in our bodies. Think of breathing and the circulation of blood and lymph. Air in the mind is inspiring, creative and enthusiastic. Emotionally, air gives sensitivity, lightness and joy. Out of balance air may manifest as excess gas, hyper excitability in the nervous system, heart palpitations and increased blood pressure. There can be lack of focus, anxiety, exhaustion, nervous tension and over sensitivity. Space gives us communication, higher knowledge and intuition. On a molecular level we are 80% space. Mentally, the space element is expansive and idealistic. Emotionally, there is a love of innocence and purity. Out of balance shows in a decrease in bodily structures. A person may be ungrounded, unrealistic and secretive.

Spirituality and Your Body The New Year is a perfect time to commit to getting to know yourself and your body better than ever. In the book The Ethical Slut, a woman shares her story of discovering the joys of masturbation as a young girl, in the back seat of the family car tucked under a warm blanket on a long trip. It felt so wonderful that she concluded the existence of her clitoris was proof positive that God loved her. Sex serves a lot of purposes. Procreation is one. Pleasure is another. Feeling loved, accepted and finding emotional fulfillment is another. Sex also plays a role in our spirituality. A key concept in Jewish spirituality is that spirituality is not just what we think about, it is also what we do with our bodies. We are whole human beings – body, mind and spirit. To think that God doesn’t like sex is like believing God doesn’t like us. With that kind of foundation, we are al-

most certain to end up carrying shame for our own perfectly natural sexual desires and fulfillments. How you use your body is an expression of your spirituality. For example, you may express your spirituality through dance, athletics, stillness, feasting or fasting. You may also choose the practice of celibacy. Despite overwhelming cultural messages to the contrary, you can be whole without a sexual partner, and all the world’s religions see value in claiming that way of life. Yet another option is to pursue the path of sexual transcendence in which you move beyond the barriers of your individual self to experience firsthand the creative impulse of the universe. As we expand our sexual awareness, we can transcend the boundaries of thought and feeling to be transported to a place of open awareness and oneness with all of the Universe.

No longer a passive participant, we engage the world, opening our self up to being used as a channel of love and grace. When we allow ourselves to be touched by another, both physically, emotionally, and spiritually, we create an opportunity for deep healing and repair. We are given an opportunity to let go of self-doubt and self-criticism, in order to gaze upon our own beauty and strength. As we are reminded of our own loving nature, we can turn our gaze away from our self to look upon the world in which we live and find anew the opportunity to love and embrace all of creation. As sexual beings, our physical passion is

not separate from the spiritual, but an expression of the intimacy that exists between the body and the spirit. As we experience the passion of sexual intimacy, we experience the deep vibrations of loving acceptance that can restore relationships and heal the world. In this way, sexual love can be viewed as an erotic meditation or a contemplative union with the Divine. Sacred sex is a way in which we experience Divine love and then offer that love back to the universe. O Barbara Lee is an ordained interfaith minister and the author of Sacred Sex: Replacing the Marriage Ethic with a Sexual Ethic. More information can be found at www.DontDoesntWork.com

ASK THE EXPERT Q: I’m having a hard time enjoying myself and just living in the moment lately. How can I get that joyfulness back and really live in the moment again? A: As adults we tend to worry about the past and stress about the future. While those areas are taking up our thoughts, the present often gets left out. Being present and in the moment is something that needs to be a conscious effort. For instance, if you are taking your dog for a walk – focus on that. Look at the trees, chat with your dog along the way, smell the fresh air and enjoy the sunshine. The same goes for when you have lunch with a friend. Don’t look around, check out who is sitting beside you and/or check your phone. Focus on your friend, the conversation and catching up and really connect with others. Connection is important in creating and keeping long lasting relationships. Same goes for when you’re on the phone, don’t multitask!

Don’t just go through the motions, what ever you’re doing. STOP and enjoy! Savor the time you are spending. If you catch yourself drifting off or being somewhere else in your thoughts, pull yourself back to the moment. Just by being aware that you are trying to be present is a step in the right direction. From an emotional intelligence point of view, being present has many benefits that you may not realize. Being present helps you build stronger relationships, form stronger passions for what you love, have more fun and ultimately be happier. And who doesn’t want more happiness? Making Final Arrangements A topic that most of us do not want to talk about. Death. Yet, planning for the future is important to all of us. Families prepare for their future, through estate planning, legal Wills and investments. Preplanning final arrangements is really the logical next step. Death is an eventuality we all will face one day, but many of us don’t want to talk about it. Final arrangements made at the time of need are made at the time of death, usually by the surviving family on behalf of the deceased. Making these plans at this time, are particularly difficult, as the grieving family are working through their emotions. Financial hardship can occur, as services are rendered and payment is due. Final arrangements made in advance, are considered pre-arrangements.

Having lost my father at a very young age, I witnessed the struggles my mother encountered making final arrangements. A widow at 38, devastated, she wrestled with every decision, hoping it was what my father would have wanted. The Will did not cover most of these decisions; Cremation or traditional burial? Where to look for a final resting place? What funeral home? Who do we call? How are we going to pay for this? Family, bless their hearts, each had their own opinion that they shared, but the decisions still rested on my mother. Difficult, only begins to describe it. I knew nothing about pre-arrangements for many years. Now that I do, I understand the importance of making these plans in advance.

14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2016

This simple act relieves the burden of responsibility and undue financial or emotional pressure from the surviving family. Until someone has experienced a loss, it is easy to underestimate the complexity of final arrangements. Within 72 hours of a death, there are 87 decisions, choices and things to do. Your grieving loved ones will carry this burden, if you don’t leave them a plan to follow. Education is important, when it relates to pre- arrangements, to take some of the fearfulness away. Cemetery options include; cremation or traditional burial, location of final resting place, and a lasting remembrance. Funeral considerations include; type of ceremony, reception, cultural and faith traditions, celebrants, flowers, music, readings and more. Benefits include: 1. Price Protection • potentially families can realize significant savings, by locking in at today’s prices • eliminates the risk of emotional overspending

FAB Books!

2. Decisions are made rationally • it is important to have open communication between family members, while everyone is thinking clearly 3. Considerate Gesture • there is a sense of relief, knowing we are not leaving our loved ones with this undue stress 4. Peace of Mind • elimination of a family dispute because loved ones hold different points of view on what is right or wrong. 5. Confidence • knowing your plans are ready, in place. Many families are not aware that preplanning final arrangements is really a continuation of their estate planning. I believe it is. Organizing tips for winter Watch out! The cold winter is indeed on its way. Very soon you will have to get the warm sheets and heavy blankets out because the temperatures will be falling just as fast as your tolerance for cold days. You should focus on organizing your home so as to achieve the best result when that bitter cold comes and starts assaulting your tender warmth-loving body. So roll up your sleeves and get ready for a round of organizing. To help you, here are some simple winter organizing tips which you can use. Linens and Blankets. As mentioned, time to take out the warm sheets and heavy blankets. Your beds will need a lot of fluff to keep you warm and happy during the day.

Stay Safe With Heaters. De-clutter the house a bit. If you are a person that tends to keep your HVAC very low in the winter and use space heaters in different parts of the house, remember to keep it safe. All the extra clutter in your home is basically potential fire hazard. So clear out as many items as you can. Incorporate Cushions and pillows. You will learn to love pillows. They will provide you with warm comfort while on the sofa or in the armchair. Consider adding floor cushions to the mix too. Deck the furniture with blankets. You can put a blanket over the sofa’s upholstery. This way you will both make it warmer, and you can always enjoy a midday nap with something to cover yourself with at hand.

Warm Your Floors. If you have bare floors, you should consider investing in rugs. Bare floors – especially tile floors – are incredibly hard to warm up, and the moment you leave the room without heating, they will cool. Walking over them will be like walking over ice cubes. Rug Recommendations. If you are getting a carpet, get a woolly one. They are nice, warm, soft. If you maintain them properly, you can definitely spend some relaxing time on the floor in front of the fireplace.

Keep it simple, keep it warm. Get the house equipped for winter with a pleasant and cozy environment, and go through de-cluttering to get rid of all potential fire hazards. Now your home is ready to both face the winter, and provide you with a comfortable and warm space as you spend time with those you love. O Ella A. is freelance writer and avid blogger. {TEA WITH SUE}

The Mystical Power of Water

Born a Pisces, it’s a bit puzzling to me that I have had a certain kind of aversion to water. I took swimming lessons as a kid but was never comfortable in the deep end of the pool, plus I hated getting my face wet. Splash me at your peril! Turbulent waters at the lake or ocean did not thrill me, so I stuck close to shore or only entered when the water was calm. On the farm, we had well water that was barely drinkable, so one of my tasks was to stir up many jugs of Kool-Aid to disguise the rusty taste. At school, there was barely time for two sips of water at the fountain line up during recess or lunchtime. (Bottles of water at your desk would never have been allowed.) These days, the benefits of drinking plenty of water are well-known. We are, after all, mostly made up of water, so it only makes sense to keep ourselves well hydrated. I confess I still struggle with drinking enough water, so I flavor it with a bit of

lemon juice or drink more herbal tea. It was in Greece in 2014 that I re-acquainted myself with the Mediterranean Sea and fell in love with the water. On a writer’s retreat, I was staying in the little village of Kardamyli - just a five-minute walk to the beach. My first dip in the sea was a revelation. The “deep end of the pool” was only five steps in from the rocky shore, so I was a bit nervous until I realized how buoyant the water was. That lovely saltwater propped me up so well it wasn’t a struggle to move or swim. We played like mermaids, my writer buddies and I. At home, I’ve continued that love of immersion in water through weekly attendance at deep-water aqua size classes. With the buoyancy of flotation belts, we exercise to the beat of funky music. The exercises were hard at first. I soon realized how little control I had over my body in deepwater - for a time, I bobbed around like a cork.

20 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I January • 2016

With practice, the exercises have become easier, so I can push myself toward better results. The beauty of deepwater exercise is its low impact on the body. You still get great resistance training because of the push and pull of the water, but there is little concern for injury. For those with back, joint, or weight challenges, it’s a great way to improve your fitness level and feel like a kid again. When I think about the look of water in all its many forms, I find I’m drawn to its mystical powers. Its meditative qualities are undeniable. Whether it’s an ice cave, a rushing river, or a placid body of water, we

pause; we look. Throughout the seasons, we snap pictures of water with all its variations of greens, blues, and grays. Some of my favorite pictures include water. In this cold January light, enjoy remembering how water supports you -- whether you meditate beside it, cavort in the depths of it, or make yourself a delicious cup of tea. Living Fabulous with Joanne Neweduk How has hardship, tragedy or trauma shaped who you are - what gifts have come of it?

else’s heart.

I know what it’s like to watch loved ones suffer from mental illness’s; in and out of hospital; endless trial of treatments.

I have experienced the grief of losing loved ones.

I know how it feels to watch parents split up and to pray for a united family.

I have felt the anguish of losing a baby I longed to carry to full-term.

I know the heartache that inevitably comes with divorce. That sense of rejection. That sense of failure.

I know what is like to have hurtful comments from people who I trusted as friends.

I have watched dreams die.

I know what it’s like to have my heart broken.

I know the resilience of the human spirit. I have learned compassion and have gained a deep respect for how strong and yet fragile we are.

I know what it’s like to break someone

I have watched dreams be reborn.

Joanne and Ron enjoying the 2015 Canmore Folk Fest.

Through the heartaches of my life I have learned to dig deep down inside to a strength that sometimes astounds me. I’ve learned to forgive myself and others. I have learned to love deeper and more fully, with an abandonment that I didn’t think was possible. I have learned compassion, and empathy, and that everyone has a story. I have learned that being generous to myself and to others, adapting an attitude of gratitude, and taking time to celebrate would transform my life. I know that heartache and challenges can coexist beside laughter, joy and happiness. In what ways do you prefer to pay back or pay it forward? Ever since I was in high school, at any given time, I have been involved in some form of volunteer work that benefit vulnerable populations.

I’ve had the privilege of traveling to many countries in the world. These trips always give me a deep appreciation for what a privilege it is to live in Canada and enjoy tremendous abundance. Currently, I am involved with the Calgary based, humanitarian charity, Medical Mercy Canada. I have sat on the board of directors since 2008 where I have held many roles from, organizing the annual fundraising gala, to serving as president. I know personally that this organization does amazing work in the communities it supports throughout Nepal, Ukraine and along the Burmese border. Most of my support comes in the form of donating my time for fundraising and the running of the organization within Canada. I did however, take the opportunity to travel to Nepal in 2011 as part of that year’s volunteer team. As expected this was a life-changing journey. The communities that we serve are always so immensely grateful for the support that we offer. Who most inspires you and why? I am inspired by people who continue to live life, pursue their dreams, and do activities they love, regardless of their age. I’ve been very blessed to have some incredible role models touch my life. My grandfather lived on his own until he was 98 years old. He woke up every day with a purpose or activity to do. One of his favourite ways to relax was to sit on the front porch with a beer and talk to neighbors. He would have an open chair so they would always feel welcome to stop over and visit for awhile. I have also been very inspired by one of my mom’s friends. Last year I attended her 105th birthday, at her home, that she personally invited me to attend. I first met her when she was 75 years old and was

impressed by her activity and zest for life. She was widowed when her youngest of four was less than one-year-old. She raised her children with tremendous love, faith, and dedication. When I met her, she was involved with a hiking group, worked at an Interfaith Store and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Frequently she joined her sister on wonderful vacations. She is engaging, interested in people and loves life. What I noticed, was that she, and others whom I admire, live a life that embraces humble gratitude, generosity, and celebration. These are the three pillars that I endeavor to incorporate in my life on a daily basis. How have business and/or personal relationships shaped your life? My business and my personal relationships I’ve had a huge impact on my life. When in particular is a relationship I have with Dianna Bowes. It is through our relationship that I have come to be the director for Fabulous@50 Calgary. When we first met we clicked immediately and Dianna has come to be not only a business partner, but a friend and an amazing mentor. O
