our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. {LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}

The Darker Side of

Giving

Sheldon Cooper, the socially challenged genius on the television series The Big Bang Theory, has a description of modern gift giving that is actually not that far from the truth. He says that foundation of gift giving is reciprocity. “You haven’t given me a gift. You’ve given me an obligation,” he explains to his friends. “The essence of the custom is that I now have to go out and purchase for you a gift of commensurate value and representing the same perceived level of friendship as that represented by the gift you’ve given me.” Perhaps we don’t consciously approach giving with the same quid pro quo attitude as Sheldon. But let’s face it. Whether we like to admit it or not, our egos can be a pretty powerful influence in our lives and in spite of our best intentions, they often get involved in the gift giving process. Our egos attach expectations to the exchange, our feelings get involved and without realizing it, we are pulled away from a heart centred motive for giving.

With a little help from our ego we can slip quietly over to the dark side of giving. How can we tell when our egos are involved? We become annoyed or disappointed when someone doesn’t acknowledge our gift with a thank you. We choose gifts that we like rather than gifts that we know the receiver wants. We mentally keep a tally of the gift exchanges we have had. We feel a little slighted if someone returns, exchanges or re-gifts our gifts. Whether we talking about material presents, or gifts of our time and energy, it takes practice for us to give to others without any strings attached. One way we can build our heart centered gift giving skills is to do it anonymously. That means not attaching your name or being recognized as the gift giver. No posting on social media that you are doing anonymous acts of kindness.

••• Our egos attach expectations to the exchange, our feelings get involved and without realizing it, we are pulled away from a heart centred motive for giving. ••• Here are some ideas to get you started: Choose the “remain anonymous” option when making a donation to online fundraising efforts that display donors’ names. Leave an inspiring note in a public place. Pay for the person two cars behind you in the drive through. Leave a newspaper, magazine or even a book at a coffee house or on a bench or bus with a note encouraging the next person to pass it on once they have read it. Leave flowers on a doorstep. Open the phone book, pick a name, and send that person a gift card.

At a restaurant, pay for a table’s lunch or dinner. Truly anonymous giving is selfless. Ironically though, these are gifts ultimately end up being ones we give ourselves. Giving anonymously helps us cultivate humility and unconditional generosity. It reinforces what it feels like to give completely from the heart. It helps our egos see the light. b Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. See. Taste.

The Gift of Food Why are you drawn to that shiny object in the grocery store? What beckons you to choose IT?

a good food memory associated with it, it tends to be less selected than the flashy neighboring dish!

I recently did an informal survey, I asked, “What attracts you to buy a food item?” The responses I received included: price, color, texture, shape, nutrition, size, and food preference. What about you? For most of us, what we see definitely commands our attention to purchase that food gift.

Let’s have a bit of fun. Do you know where the expression OM NOM NOM NOM came from? Think back to a big furry blue monster from a street show. But of course, it’s Cookie Monster from Sesame Street! When he shoved cookies in his mouth his voice became lower and this particular sound emitted from his throat. (Don’t forget that the crumbs sprayed everywhere at the same time too!) I think just like Cookie, we’ve all had an OM NOM NOM NOM moment when enjoying a tasty morsel. Speaking of taste...

There is a whole lot of food fascination out there. People are willingly sharing the food pictures they’ve taken with the world; you’ll find food pictures on social media with tags like #foodie #foodporn #omnomnom and even #foodgasm! Whether or not you’re on Instagram or Twitter I’m sure you can appreciate a visually-appealing plate. As well, have you ever noticed an untouched food item at a buffet just because it looks grey, or brown? Regardless of scrumptious taste or

Did you notice the tart or sweet taste of the apple you consumed yesterday? What did that spoonful of crockpot stew offer? Any hints of sweet, salty, or savory? Learning about your reaction to what you see, and what you taste can provide clues about your relationship with food;

8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2015

learning about your food journey can help you to determine your patterns, habits, and experiences so that you can enjoy food (no shame or guilt!), and glean nutrition from it. I’m sure we would like lots of energy, reliable memory, increased wellbeing, and so on. I suggest taste = nutrition. If you pause and pay attention to the food in your mouth, it allows your body to absorb the nutrients from the food. Taste = nutrition. What a gift. Challenge: next time you put something in your mouth note the texture, flavor, and temperature. What are your taste buds experiencing? Slow down and experience the moment to receive this food gift. Close your eyes if you need to so you’re not distracted. You may be surprised that you may likely eat less too. Here are two recipes that taste great with visual appeal; these N.E.A.T. recipes tick off all the boxes! The porridge is a quick breakfast, and the snack can be enjoyed anytime especially with friends. Hope you #omnomnom these food gifts! Quinoa Flakes Porridge Enjoy this dairy-free and gluten-free porridge with fruit and other toppings. • 1 cup almond milk • 1/3 cup quinoa flakes (not seeds ~ you can find in bulk at Save-on or Planet Organic) • fruit (optional) • good quality dark balsamic vinegar or maple syrup (optional) Heat milk over to soft boil; lower heat then add flakes and stir constantly for 2 to 3 minutes. Take off heat to thicken. It's more like a snack at this point (doesn't have enough oomph to carry from breakfast to lunch in my opinion) so this is what I do to add more nutrients, energy, and taste: for seasonal "fun" I add fresh cranberries

to the milk at the 2 minute mark; stir for another 2 minutes until they start popping; off heat, sit for 2 to 3 minutes; add a handful of raw almonds and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. Alternatively off heat, you could add any berry with nuts and some maple syrup to taste. Pistachio-Stuffed Dates with Coconut Flakes Lots of minerals, fiber, and energy in these parcels. One piece is very filling! • ¼ cup pistachios, shelled • ½ tsp coconut oil • 8 to 12 dates • coconut flakes Put pistachios and coconut oil in a food processor. Keep processing until mixed thoroughly to a pasty consistency. Remove stone from dates then stuff with pistachio mix. Sprinkle with coconut flakes. Getting into the Spirits Spirits. Not the spooky, ghostly kind. The distilled, alcohol kind. Some of you many never touch the stuff, but I’m here to tell you, that Spirits can have a very positive effect during this long, dark time of year. Personally, I enjoy having a small nip of good Scotch (with a bit of water!) on a cold evening when preparing dinner. It warms me up, and feels comforting. But if you would rather not imbibe directly, here are a few ways to consider introducing them into your life.

ing at this time of year is all about.

Holiday Baking & Cooking

Feel a cold or sore throat coming on? Have a Hot Toddy. It’s actually medically proven than a shot of Brandy, Whiskey, Bourbon or Rum combined with juice of a lemon, spoonful of honey, topped up with hot water and a cinnamon stick is a doctor approved way of minimizing the symptoms of your miserable cold.* The medicinal properties of spirits have long been known for killing bacteria, gently numbing pain, and creating warmth through the body which helps to heal. Add to that the additional goodness of honey, lemon and water and you are going to feel and sleep better.

I was brought up in a traditional English home. As soon as the calendar flipped over to November, my Father would dig out the largest Mason jar he could find, fill it with raisins, currants, candied cherries etc. and top it all up with a combination of rum and brandy. He would then hold it high in the air proclaiming “the fruit is officially soaking” which it would do for the next 3-4 weeks in preparation for the plum puddings and Christmas fruitcakes he would make using my Grandmother’s recipes. I still have a cake from last year in my freezer, I plan to thaw it out, add more rum and brandy to resurrect it, and it’s good to go for another season! Using spirits in festive desserts can elevate the whole meal. Think Bananas Flambe, or Cherries Jubilee, Rum balls, Bourbon Blondies, the list goes on. When we add a tot of spirits to a dish, we feel decadent, and extravagant, which is what celebrat-

Don’t restrict your cooking with spirits to just desserts, either. A nip of brandy, Marsala, or wine, are necessary ingredients when preparing delicious main course dishes with pork tenderloin medallions, Beef Bourguinon, Coq au Vin, to name a few. The alcohol in the spirits evaporates during the heating process, so that just the unique flavours remain in the food. Medicinal Purposes

A wise tour guide on a trip into the African bush once told me he always travelled with a flask of brandy. He took a small capful everyday which he maintained prevented any tummy troubles from taking hold, which, when you are a long way from medical help, is a good thing.

“I don’t drink alcohol, I drink distilled spirits. So I’m not an alcoholic, I’m spiritual.” - unknown I now follow this advice when I travel and so far, it’s worked like a charm. Cocktails

The world of Cocktails has exploded in recent years and Edmonton bars have not been left behind. Creating inventive, sexy concoctions using a variety of different spirits, with twists on old 60’s style drinks, is very in vogue. Most spirit brands have websites where you can find amazing selection of cocktail recipes to try, as does Pinterest. Experiment, have fun! Winter is long and cold. Why not spend some time staying warm with friends, light a fire and share some creative cocktails? Cheers! * If you are taking medications, please check with your doctor before consuming any alcohol

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves and turbinado sugar with the club soda. Add ice and the bourbon, Frangelico, pineapple juice and pure maple syrup and shake well. Double strain into an ice-filled rocks glass and garnish with the mint sprig. Moscow Mule (one of my favourites!) 4 oz Ginger beer

Alison’s Cocktail Suggestions

1 1/2 oz Vodka

Here are 3 cocktails (each recipe makes one cocktail). You will need a Cocktail Shaker and strainer for some of these recipes.

1/6 oz Lime juice

The Godfather 1 part Amaretto 1 part Scotch Whisky Pour over ice in an Old Fashioned Glass and serve The Wager 8 to 10 mint leaves, plus 1 large mint sprig for garnish 1 tablespoon turbinado sugar 1/4 ounce chilled club soda Ice 2 1/2 ounces bourbon 2 teaspoons Frangelico 1 1/2 ounces pineapple juice 2 teaspoons pure maple syrup

Combine vodka and ginger beer in a copper mug or highball glass filled with ice. Add lime juice. Stir gently and garnish with a lime slice. Uncover Your Fabulousness Becoming a woman of a certain age brings sweeping thoughts and emotions of trepidation while at the same time, a sense of accomplishment. Add to that, past experiences and messages that molded and shaped our worldviews, determines how we arrive at this unique moment of female-dom. One thing is certain, we are here, in this moment, full of life and brimming. We’ve run the gamut on relationships, love, loss, children, career ups and downs, triumphs and disappointments and despite all of it, we’re still proudly standing. And then it begins. The sensing for something more. The soft whisper, slowly awakening your awareness to that beautiful, almost wild side of you long forgotten. Do you notice its soft utterances in its attempt to catch your attention? Resistance to Change

That whisper is you. The powerful, fabulous side of you, shelved years ago, perhaps as early as childhood, is now poking through to capture your notice. Is it winning or are you pushing it down,

perhaps in fear of the unknown or in resistance to change? Now that we’ve grown up and finished many of our ‘chores’, our brilliance is tapping ever so slightly on our heart. In the attempt to answer the call, we do what many do. We make changes to the outside. New hairdo’s, wardrobes, makeovers, cars, homes, the extension of our energy to others, all these and more are our way of answering the whisper. None are wrong. It’s simply the beginning of the return to fabulous as we understand it, something which was never lost, only temporarily forgotten. Something More

An interesting phenomena then occurs. Like the throbbing heart beat described in Edgar Allen Poe’s, ‘The Tell Tale Heart’, the whisper follows you throughout your day, reminding you of the existence of your ‘something more’. Insistent, it pokes away at you. Outward attempts stop satisfying its need because what it needs is you. So, how do you discover your ‘something more’, your true point of fabulous-ness? {continued on page 23} Celebrating baby boomer women • 13

Connection In our sexual relationships, the joy is that we connect with each other in a really profound way. However, we cannot maintain that connection indefinitely. We cannot lay total claim to each other. There is a sacredness of the other, untouchable and inaccessible which plunges us into a kind of powerlessness. We can celebrate that powerlessness and the gift of being unique and independent people, or we can respond with fear and anxiety. When we become anxious, masculine and feminine react in opposite ways. The natural posture for the feminine is to move toward greater attachment and increasing interconnectedness, even to the point of enmeshment. The natural posture for the masculine is to move into more separation and distance, even to the point of detachment and cut off. When these patterns continue, the masculine feels suffocated and the feminine feels abandoned and lonely. The masculine drive is for freedom, the feminine drive is for fullness. The masculine fear is losing one’s self; the feminine fear is losing the other.

14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2015

All of us have both masculine and feminine energy and all of us tend to be most comfortable operating out of one or the other. Whether we are more masculine or feminine in our energy has nothing to do with our gender or our sexual orientation. Despite the messages on Hallmark Valentine cards, two people never become one person. When we can contain our anxiety and celebrate the uniqueness of our partner as a separate person, then we can dance between identifying who we are as individuals and the joy of connecting with each other. Then we don’t have to worry about losing our “self” or losing the “other.” We celebrate love and experience intimate communication with each other by relaxing into each other and spontaneously offering our deepest gifts. Suffocated or abandoned

Think about the times you felt either suffocated or abandoned. What did you do? The next time you are feeling suffocated, ask for the space you need while also offering reassurance that you are still in the relationship, and that you love and care for your partner. Challenge yourself to stay connected knowing that the masculine

grows spiritually by learning to live as freedom, rather than by struggling for it. The next time you are feeling abandoned, ask for the reassurance that you need and then do something for yourself while allowing your partner the space they need for their own self-care. Challenge yourself to accept the anxiety of being in your own company, recognizing that the feminine grows spiritually by learning to live as love rather than hoping for it. Growth

The goal isn’t to separate, organize and label every detail of our lives or to create unnecessary dualities, but to use it as a lens for recognizing patterns -- in nature, in our relationships and in our own quest for self development and growth. When we relax into the Yin and Yang of feminine and masculine energy we see that everything is ultimately interconnected and whole. b Barbara Lee is an ordained interfaith minister and the author of Sacred Sex: Replacing the Marriage Ethic with a Sexual Ethic. The Shocking Reasons Why It Is Much Easier to Give than Receive It is never too early to pick up that special birthday present or grab that perfect Christmas gift for the person who has everything. When we think of gifts, we think of fancy wrapped paper packages with colorful bows. The process of giving and receiving occurs on a daily basis in board rooms, at charity functions, in get well gift baskets, and even in the evening out with their girlfriends. Giving is different than gifting in the fact that you can give someone something without necessarily having to spend any money or wrap it in fancy paper. Giving is more than a transaction. It is about providing money, time, expertise, resources, a compliment, a hug or a smile, or even a random act of kindness. You don’t need a special location to give

someone something that makes them feel loved, valued, wanted, or needed. It can happen anywhere and anytime. You do not need a special occasion to give. Why should you give? By giving to another person, it makes you feel good and connected to another person. It adds to your happiness and well-being. It gives you a boost of self-esteem. You may even stand taller because of how good you feel. Some people even say that giving to others brings good karma. What you put out in the world will boomerang back to you. Deepak Chopra said, “The law of giving is simple. If you want joy, give joy. If love is what you seek-offer love. If you crave material affluence, help others to become prosperous.” You need to start giving more of what you want more of!

16 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2015

••• Giving and receiving is about building relationships, connecting, and recognizing how important another person is. ••• People can come with all different reasons why they cannot give a gift - because they did not grow up with it or they do not know how to find the right gift. Giving is not something they know. Just because you do not know what gift to give, it does not mean you can’t or shouldn’t. Five Love Languages

According to Gary Chapman best-selling author of the Five Love Languages, one of the five love languages is receiving gifts: “A gift is something you can hold in your hand and say “Look, he was thinking of me.” or, “She remembered me.” You must be thinking of someone to give him a gift. The gift itself is a symbol of thought. It doesn’t matter whether it cost money. What is important is that you thought of him.” This thought can be a symbol of love, caring, best wishes, congratulations, and appreciation. And this can be given so many different ways including the other four love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, acts of service, and physical touch. Low Self-Esteen

If giving is so great, why do so many people have trouble receiving gifts? Some people have trouble receiving gifts due to their past conditioning as a child where they feel they do not deserve a gift. Others may have low self-esteem. They may not use to people doing things for them. For these people, it may feel as are in need a hand out versus a hand up. It affects their sense of pride. You may have even caught yourself deflecting a compliment

because you don’t want the attention or spotlight on you. You may even one of those people who have focused so much on others that whenever someone offers you something - you think their gift comes with strings attached. Guess what? You deserve to: receive gifts, be acknowledged, and be appreciated. Connecting

Giving and receiving is about the circle of reciprocity. The giving is just as important as receiving. I receive such great joy in watching someone receives a gift that I have given them whether it is in the form of a compliment, the coaching tip, or a gift. In today’s society, people seem to be cutting back from giving and maybe it’s because they have a sense of scarcity due to economic conditions. Economics has nothing to do with how you can make someone someone’s day. Giving and receiving is about building relationships, connecting, and recognizing how important another person is. The next time someone offers you a compliment, buys you a cup of coffee or pays for your lunch, stop, smile and say thank you! They are giving you a gift. Take a moment to receive it. b DEBRA KASOWSKI, BScN CEC is an award-winning best-selling author, transformational speaker, blogger, and Certified Executive Coach. “Cancer is Your Passport to Life” “You have cancer.”

Cancer is really your passport to life.

These three words strike fear in the hearts of those who hear them.

When I first heard the news I had cancer in July 2013, I was in the early stages of my diagnosis. Doctors diagnosed me with endometrial cancer - Stage 1.

If you are one of the many baby boomers who have been diagnosed with cancer, chances are your initial reaction is one of disbelief, denial, shock, horror, anger or stoic acceptance. You may be asking yourself, “Why me? Why now?”

“No problem, I thought. “I’ll handle this. In a few short months, cancer will be all gone and I will be able to get on with the rest of my life.”

There’s never a convenient time to have cancer. A cancer diagnosis can be at best worrisome and overwhelming. Cancer is seen as a devastating illness which actually concerns everyone throughout their lives, threatening baby boomers in higher proportions. If it’s not you, someone close to you may be at higher risk.

I had big dreams I wanted to fulfill. Months earlier, I had just returned from a site inspection tour in Ireland and Italy with my adult son and daughter. I wanted to take women on life changing travel experiences in Europe. I had also been writing a book about the life changing power of travel. Cancer was an unwelcome interruption in my life.

According to statistics, 1 out of 2 women will develop cancer in their lifetime. Experts predict that during the next 20 years, 65 - 70% of cancers will occur in those aged 65 and older.

Later that fall, doctors performed a radical hysterectomy to remove my tumour. Scarcely an hour after surgery, my oncologist stood by my bedside to deliver her prognosis.

But cancer doesn’t have to be a devastating, life threatening disease.

“We successfully removed the tumour. But your cancer has spread to the lymph

and the upper aorta. It’s Stage 3.C/4. It’s incurable.”

been diagnosed with cancer, you need to know that cancer is not a death sentence. Cancer is your passport to life.

“Can you repeat that?” I hardly believed she would dare to speak those words to my face again.

I’d like to share 5 important truths that will inspire you to believe that radiant health is possible for you:

She coldly reiterated, “Yes, it’s incurable.” I was given a diagnosis of death. My whole life was about to be put on hold. Instead of caving in to despair, her words ignited a huge passion within me to live. I refused to believe my doctor’s diagnosis that my life was about to end. I determined to whole heartedly embrace hope and find my way back to health again. That was the moment I made an important decision. Since travel played a pivotal role in changing my life, I was going to treat my cancer experience as if I was on a vacation, even if I was only given a self imposed “time off to get well” for cancer treatments.

Annie with son Josh and daughter Sarah.

1. No one is the final authority on your health, whether or not you live or die.

It wasn’t always easy. Within less than 6 months of my diagnosis, I was completely cancer FREE.

A doctor’s diagnosis is not a decree from God. I’ve met many women on my journey with cancer who were wrongly diagnosed. Some never had cancer at all yet doctors prescribed surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Others who were given a diagnosis of death successfully overcame their disease. BELIEVE and EMBRACE the hope that healing is entirely possible for you. You alone are the best authority on your body, not your doctor. Let’s face it, you’ve been living in the same skin since the day you were born. You feel disconnected from your body right now. It seems more like your enemy than a friend but remember that it is possible for you to restore your vital connection with your body. This deeper connection will help you find your way to the healing modalities that are right for you.

Now that I am on the other side of my journey, I’ve encountered countless women in similar situations who are desperately searching for answers. If you or someone close to you has recently

2. “When you change the way you look at things, things change.” Your body has been trying to tell you it’s time to wake up. It’s time to LIVE. Cancer is your opportunity dive more deeply into yourself than you

Although I was not able to physically travel far, I used the power of my imagination to visualize myself traveling outwardly to a far off destination. I created a daily travel ritual to imagine I was on a wonderful journey. What’s more, I incorporated the sights, the sounds, and the smells of my travels abroad - some of the happiest memories in my life - to breath life into my dreams of travelling the world one day.

ever dared before. It is the way for you to fully embrace life with all its challenges and ups and downs. Although it may be hard to see this right now, at the end of your journey you will be grateful for the many amazing gifts cancer gave you. 3. Don’t try to work against Divine Timing. While there is never a good time for you to have cancer, NOW is best time for you to have it. Accept and embrace your circumstances. No amount of wishing for something different is going to change your situation. Accept the fact that your treatment may be a long process. Accept that your dreams will be on hold for now. Accept that your body will go through some changes. Acceptance ends your suffering and allows you to patiently enjoy your journey. When you understand and use Divine Timing to your advantage, you harness a powerful force. The wind blows at your back instead of gusting headlong in your face. Time becomes your ally instead of your enemy. 4. Visualize your dreams. This is far more powerful than positive thinking. Do you wish to merely survive cancer? Or do you have a big dream for your future? Do you long to watch your grandchildren grow up into amazing human beings? Do you long to put a brush to canvas in the south of France? Whatever your dreams are, hold onto them and give them life. Nurture your vision and feed them with your desire. When you practice visualizing your dreams, it is the difference between trying to get pregnant and seeing yourself holding a beautiful baby in your arms. The latter fills your heart with expectant joy. Feed your dreams every day. You will fill your heart with expectant joy. 5. Surround yourself with positive mentors. Cancer support groups may not be the best support for you. Seek out instead “Cancer Thrivers” - those who have

successfully returned from their cancer journey and are enjoying radiant health. Their journey will inspire you with new hope, making it easier for you to believe that healing is wholly possible for you. Be sure to also surround yourself with those who are living a full and vibrant life. Their exuberance and zest for life will be like a wonderful contagious disease. I am now in Bali, Indonesia, for three months where I am fulfilling my travel dreams and writing my book, “Passport to Life.” I will be revealing my secrets about how I used the power of travel to change my life and heal myself from cancer. Since my experience, I’ve met many people in a similar situation. They, too, were given a doctor’s diagnosis of death. They had days, months, or maybe a few years to live. I saw so many give up hope, believing what the doctors tell them. On Tuesday, December 29th, I will also be hosting a 2 hour, content-packed tele- seminar called, “Dying to Live - Lessons From Machu Picchu” that will help you break through ALL your fears. If you have been diagnosed with cancer, get ready to experience the New Year with a newfound sense of hope! {TEA WITH SUE}

The Gift of Christmas My brother and I tiptoed down the stairs, careful to avoid the crackle of brown paper that lined the middle of each carpeted step. As long as we were very, very quiet, we could bask in the glow of the Christmas tree and snoop through our Santa socks while our parents slept. The rule - Christmas morning was not to start before 7 am.

went the coffee pot, and an early Christmas celebration began.

As I dug through my stocking, I heard a tap-tap-tap on the kitchen door. In waltzed my cousin, Doris and my Aunt Ena. Hearing the noise and commotion, Mom shouted, “You kids get back to bed!”

Both my parents and grandparents lived through the Great Depression of the 1930’s. They knew what it was like to “make do” with whatever they had. Much of their time was devoted to making sure that everyone else in their circles had “something” - an orange, a pair of handknit mittens, gingerbread cookies, or a place at the dinner table.

“But Mom, Aunt Ena and Doris are here.” Astonished at my comment, Mom flew into action, shrugging into her housecoat on her way to the living room. She laughed at the surprise of the visit, on

As the 2015 Christmas season approaches, snippets of memories of gifts and giving swirl through my head. While I don’t remember most of the presents I received as a child, I remember as if it were yesterday, the preparations that marked the time to come.

30 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2015

Early one December when I was 13, I spent a weekend with Doris and Aunt Ena to help with their Christmas boxes. Every flat surface in the kitchen was lined with racks of cookies ready for me to decorate. Aunt Ena’s famous pig potholders – ten months of sewing - were stacked on a chair. She showed me the long list of lucky recipients.

Mom was the one in our family dedicated to making Christmas special for us kids, so we wanted it to be special for her, too. One year, my brother and I headed for the creek at the end of the farm and chopped down a spruce tree. It was dark as we trudged home with that tree on the toboggan, but it was worth all the work to see the look on her face.

In addition to the small gifts, there was a large hamper stuffed with goodies – this to a “down-on-their-luck” family who had fallen through the welfare cracks and were struggling to make ends meet. My cousin explained that every year she looked for a family to help.

The gift of time

Doris would deliver all the packages over the next couple of weeks. Before I left that weekend, Aunt Ena gave me a copy of her cardboard piggy pattern so that I could continue the tradition. I still have that pattern. More valuable than silver and gold are the gifts I was given by my family circle: The comforting gift of ritual My dad always cooked the turkey – a tradition I passed to my husband and he to our son. Presents were opened Christmas morning, with the obligatory Mandarin orange consumed to tide us over ‘til breakfast. The gift of surprise Wishing lists were standard in our family. We knew we’d never get everything we asked for, so we could add the fantastical and unobtainable. My Grammy Ed always had a pink Cadillac on her list. As a new bride, imagine my surprise on that first Christmas morning when I received everything on the list – my husband, who didn’t have that tradition, hadn’t realized he was to pick just one or two.

My Grammy Ed always added a note to her wishing list: “I don’t really need anything except some of your undivided attention.” As she aged, I realized how very important our time together was for her. Grandma Ward, my dad’s mother, loved to have me sit with her while she knit. We watched the bull-riding on TV. No words were required – she just wanted my company. These days our attention gets pulled in so many directions. How grateful I am that at least once a year I can give myself the gift of slowing down so I can re-live those memories and continue to make new ones. This season, may you bask in all that’s special and meaningful to you! b As a speaker and a writer, Sue believes in the magnificence of everyone. What are you looking forward to doing/ creating in this next half of your life? Bonnie – I am so looking forward to this half of my life. In the first half I did what was required of me to meet society’s standards and to do what was expected. (Some of that I loved like raising a family and taking care of my home). I am looking forward to living my life on purpose,, doing those things that I know will make a difference. The Acacia Institute, will change the way women are leading in Canada, The WOW Conference will help will step into owning their own wellness , Puttin’ on the Glitz will show people that having a great time can support a worthy cause. In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? Tamena – Time is so precious and we have to be so careful where we “spend” it. Being a single mother of three, my time is my most valuable asset. I give my time to worthy causes, usually those issues that affect women and water quality. If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? Bonnie – I was raised in a family of six girls. We didn’t have much in the way of material wealth, but were wealthy with friends and family. We did so many things together as a family. My father was believed so deeply in the strength of a family, I knew without a doubt that if I needed him he would be there for me. So for me, family is my foundation and my resting place. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? Tamena – Beauty is a quality that comes from within, it does not matter what the exterior is, and beauty shines from your

soul, through your eyes, to the world. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors, the sooner you LOVE you, the happier and more productive you will be What is it in nature that feeds your soul? Bonnie – I love the magnitude of the mountains, they are so majestic, and strong. I feel as if they are eternal. I love hiking high in the mountains, where nothing restricts my view and I can see 360 degrees. I feel free, exhilarated by the view and yet cradled in something that is everlasting. – that feeds my soul. What makes you laugh? Tamena – The last time I had a big belly laugh I was sitting around the table at Thanksgiving. We were just having such a good time, just letting go and relaxing. I love laughing with my children, it is the best feeling ever. b Celebrating baby boomer women • 33
