WHAT’S NEW IN SCAR CORRECTION? There have been some amazing breakthroughs in scar treatment in the last few years. In most cases we can now restore the function of the affected part by the scar. In many more we can improve its appearance and in some, we can make the scar virtually unnoticeable. Scar correction is a very complex interaction of many factors. In short, it takes many things to make a wound heal. Small things such as keeping a wound moist, preventing infection, decreasing tension and movement, are paramount in making a wound heal. Photos Courtesy of Jun Tan, M.D., People’s Hospital, Hunan Province China
Studies have shown lasers, growth factors, stem cells, and other factors play a role. Some of the scar treatment options we use; Grafting, Surgical Release, Injections, Cryotherapy, Botox, Laser scar revision, Laser Induced Microporulation to Enhance Drug Delivery (Laser Assisted Drug Delivery – LADS), Combinations of Treatments and many more. The goal of these treatments is to: improve range of motion, improve pliability, improve texture, improve appearance, less pain, less itchiness and overall improved quality of life. Dr. Lycka is amongst the first in the world to offer this advanced technology. He combines numerous agents including the most advanced lasers to help make your scars vanish.

Ladies, you know what I’m talking about. It’s that little judgmental voice inside your head that’s quick to point out all the things you’re not doing. It’s ironic how that voice remains stoically quiet when we’re working hard…but it’s the first to pipe up when we’re relaxing, or doing something because it simply makes us happy. The same logic that advises new moms to carve out some self-indulgent time in order to become better mothers is a rule we should apply in our daily lives. The truth is, we’re better and more well rounded people when we allow ourselves to relax and play. Many of us put our own needs on the back burner to raise a family (I know I did) and it feels foreign to make you the priority.

Expect Imperfection
SWEET TALK
Google describes the word expectation as “a belief that someone will or should achieve something”. On its own, it’s a pretty innocuous word, right? As a child, we may have waited for something…. eyes shining with expectation. As we grow, expectations take on an ominous tone and often it becomes more about responsibility…and sometimes it even morphs into unrealistic expectations.
Everyone can benefit from tapping into their creative side… it allows you to operate from a place other than intellect. Being creative is less about perfection and more about what makes your heart sing. I’ve recently enrolled in a multi-media class…and I love it. This class falls directly into the category of things that I want to do…it’s not something that I have to do. I can express myself any way I please. I’m relearning that it’s okay to be imperfect…and that I can have a messy, fabulous time doing it. Here’s to rediscovering your creative side…and to the beauty that lies within! We all have a closet full of dark neutral clothing and when the weather turns warmer we all want pops of colour to freshen up our wardrobe.
LOOKING FABULOUS AT 50
White is Fresh But what if I told you about an unexpected strategy to freshen up your style for spring and it has nothing to do with colour?
by wearing white with black or navy. Excellent with hot fuchsia pink lips and defined black liner. Try bold graphic designs or stripes.
What if I told you to wear white! White is chic. White is classic. White is fresh. White is a blank canvas for your accessories. White is to spring/summer style as black is to fall/winter wardrobes. White goes with everything just like black goes with everything. white goes with all styles whether romantic, dramatic, classic, sporty or natural.
Excitingly: look energetic and exciting by wearing white with emerald green or coral in floral prints.
WayS to WEar WhitE:
Monochromatically: wear tones of white from bright white to beige. I love this look because your accessories become the star. You could add brown leather ankle wedge shoes, off- the- hip saddle coloured belt, layered muted silver and turquoise necklaces with a statement turquoise ring and look very natural. Or add a bright colourful print oversized square scarf with neon coloured pumps and a box clutch and look tres European Classic. The possibilities of how to accessorize a monochromatic outfit is as varied as your imagination. Dramatically: bold and high contrast
Naturally: wear white with shades of browns. Sophisticatedly: look elegant and successful wearing white with metallics. Mixing silver, gold, bronze are all acceptable. Romantically: look pretty, feminine and gentle wearing white with blush, soft pinks or delicate peach. Soft curls, long lashes and soft lip gloss completes this look. I recommend buying basic white pieces as the most cost effective and best mix n match possibilities to make new outfits from your existing wardrobe. Here’s my essential list: 1. White straight leg denim 2. White ankle length twill cotton pant 3. White skirt 4. White tank top with shoulder straps wide enough to cover your bra strap.
8 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Spring • 2013 Issue 11_spring 13.indd 8
13-04-02 12:21 PM
You can have some embellishments but try to keep it relatively plain so it can become the backdrop for necklaces. 5. White slouchy pull over sweater or loose fitting cardigan in a breezy knit. Even though my #1 choice every spring for my clients to update their wardrobe is to buy some basic key pieces in white; some still resist. White gets dirty too fast: Although we live in Alberta which is known for our black dirt, white is still worth the scuffs from dirt and dust. And it’s not as bad as you might think. If white was so unforgiveable, why then do chef’s wear white? If anyone was going to get dirty or stained, wouldn’t it be them? Yet they look clean and fresh. Let’s give “whites” a chance. I have been trained in advance colour analysis and know that some skin tones and colour seasons don’t look as good in white as other seasons.
Springs and Autumns look better in creams that have more “yellow”, Winters in bright white and summers in a faded softer white. Find the white that works for your skin tone. We all have one. White is especially flattering on lighter skin tones who are arctic blonde, silver or blondes. Be sure to give some definition to your eyes by wearing liner and lengthening mascara. Add a pop of fresh peachy pink lip colour and you will look fresh and vibrant. Buy something white! Z SHIRLEY BORRELLI : Image and Style expert. Savoring the
Second Half of Life As an increasingly larger portion of the population finds itself in the ‘second half’ of life, there is a push for awareness to expand once again. In some ways it is difficult to prepare for aging, for the young cannot embrace a perspective complete enough to predict what to prepare for! Besides, if we are living in the moment, we are not thinking too much about what life will be like ten years from now. Further, aging is something that seems to happen to the body-mind, but not to the spirit. If we identify strongly with the body and the mind, we may be thrown off balance by changes time may bring. If we identify more strongly with spirit, we may scarcely be aware of changes that affect our physical or mental abilities. In fact, it may be that a lively spirit keeps the body younger, the mind more active. It is important to ‘feed’ the spirit, to give it space to roam freely, and allow it to sometimes (often) take the lead. Those individuals who seem truly ageless, are the ones who allow their spirits to explore, like curious little puppies. There is always something interesting around the next corner. The second half of life is no exception. We could almost say that it is in the second half of life that the soul becomes more deeply aware of itself. As a baby grows, there is a gradual development of self-awareness; away from egocentricity
and towards awareness of self-in-world. As soul awareness grows, there is a similar shift away from self-in-world towards spirit-in-eternity. There is a profound losing, or letting go of an old world, an old way of seeing things. As the child grows up, the back yard which was once the whole “outside world”, loses significance as a wider world opens up. As soul-awareness grows, the back yard of this Earth similarly loses significance as we catch glimpses of yet another ‘world’ beyond the familiar. And just as there are those who prefer the security of the back yard and are reluctant to venture up the street, so there are those who cling to the security of the world, fearful of the unknown beyond. Embrace Change
The best preparation for whatever the future brings is to decide to embrace change rather than resist it. It is better to ride the wave, than to simply stand there and hope it does not knock you over. We can ride gently into the second half of life. There is no rush anymore. The second half is for savoring. Children are not interested in scenery, there is so much of it and it’s all the same. Older people are entranced by scenery; each scene is unique and precious, existing only once like this, in this particular moment of our experience. Children want to get going, keep moving.

••• Those individuals who seem truly ageless, are the ones who allow their spirits to explore, like curious little puppies. ••• Older people just want them to be still for a moment, so they can really look at them. They know how quickly the children will grow, and how precious is this one moment that they share. There is much to savor. Living Fully
The second half is also the time for the mingling of intellect and experience, allowing it to steep, so that the wisdom becomes strong and robust. It is the time to share that wisdom with the tribe, as we move towards our role as elders. It will be for us to re-define what it means to live fully, to keep growing and learning, to explore our creativity year after year. Our most profound task, however, may be to demonstrate a fearless transition from
form, to formless. So much more aware of our “spiritual selves” than our predecessors, our journey of transition may be undertaken with much greater consciousness than ever before. Practicing non-attachment allows us to let go more easily. Being in the moment allows us to live more fully. Spirit becomes lighter and lighter, more and more free. And when that happens, the lines between young and old, life and death begin to blur. Then perhaps, as Richard Bach has written, “there’s no such place as far away”. Whether in form, or formlessness, we are still and ever, one. Z Gwen Randall-Young is an author and award winning psychologist in private practice. Indulge Your Right Brain
We all have an inner artist. Kim Fjordbotten didn’t stumble upon hers until it got out, did a cartwheel, and overrode her left brain. Even history’s favourite scientist knew the great value of so-called “right brain” pursuits in growing a happy, healthy and whole individual. Einstein wrote, “Creativity is the intelligence having fun.” In other words, we are hard-wired for work and play, says The Paint Spot director, who discovered her future in a paint-splattered room at the U of A. Until that day, her left brain had been telling her to be a dental hygienist; a logical choice, based on the fact that her mom had worked in a dental office for years, and the job offered challenges, security and benefits.
What more could she need?
Then the recent high-school grad turned a corner during a tour at the university, and entered the Fine Arts department. There were paint splashes all over the floor, rows of kilns, easels, drawings, sculptures and new, unwrapped supplies. Her senses delighted, did a few backflips, and abruptly hit a switch. The “Aha” moment instantly changed Fjordbotten’s mind about her career path. Right after the tour she dialed up her mom and shared the news. “ ‘I think I’m going to do fine art.’ And that was that.” Fjordbotten enrolled in the BFA program, and while in her fourth year she met her mentor Sidsel Naess Bradley, then-owner of The Paint Spot in Old Strathcona, a local hub for everything art.

13-04-02 12:21 PM
The meeting was kismet. When the student is ready, the teacher arrives. Fjordbotten started working at the shop and 10 years ago took it over. “If I had not had that fork in the road I’d probably be a chain-smoking diabetic realtor,” she laughed, during a recent Be Fabulous interview at the expanded shop’s new location, just south of Whyte Ave. and east of the railroad tracks. After all, passion, dreams and cries of “Eureka” don’t typically arise when we’re busy being rational, sequential, logical and analytical also-called “left-brain” faculties. “The freedom to free-associate and express yourself in a nonverbal non-linear way is so vitally important,” says the 47-yearold artist. “We live in such a hands-off and computerized world. ... We are also in the age of social media, and communicating visually has become so essential.” “Art and creativity infuse everything we do. It’s how we celebrate our culture and commemorate our history, through family trees, heirloom quilts, family albums; it’s how we relax, lose track of time, and ourselves. It doesn’t matter if you are gardening or quilting or sculpting or painting ... “ “I feel lucky that I’ve found something I’m so passionate about.”
One of her greatest passions is seeing the light go on inside other people’s heads. “Part of what I do is problem-solving. People come to the store, for whatever reason on that day, and they start to say, ‘I used to be good when ... but I stopped ... family, kids, career ...’ It doesn’t matter. That day, they decided to walk in the door and take the initiative.” She asks these new customers: what do you see yourself doing when you envision yourself making art? “Is it collage, oil paints, encaustics, sketching ... I’m good at ferreting it out and I love watching the lightbulb go on when they say, ‘I can do this!’ It’s never too late. [Your] inner talent waits for [you.]” On any given day, Fjordbotten may be walking the floor helping customers; keeping inventory control; teaching an art class; displaying artists’ work in the front of the store; or immersed in details of The Paint Spot’s next Whyte Ave. Art Walk, their annual July event that gives exposure to more than 400 artists over 10 city blocks and two parks. “We are a holistic business. We cover it all: from the palette to the gallery,” she laughs. Z

o you d t a h W an do with st? ne empty
In a recent television commercial, parents are shown feigning sadness as their son moves out for college, when really they can’t wait to redecorate his room. Based on conversations I have with women in midlife, I’m not sure that is what usually happens.
Many women experience “empty nest syndrome” - a loss of role identity that makes them ask, “Now what?” Calling this important midlife transition the empty nest syndrome does it a disservice. The word empty naturally conjures up feelings of loss, sadness or abandonment. No wonder women feel that way if that is how this time in their lives is described. I’m not saying that there aren’t powerful emotions attached to seeing one’s children grow up and leave home. I’m suggesting that like in any transition, change is inevitable but suffering is optional. Your experience as a mother in midlife depends entirely on what you choose to focus on. If you focus on the empty part of the empty nest, you will likely feel empty.
What are you focusing on?
LIFE IS JUST A PHASE
I’ve always believed it was silly to say that as mothers we are raising children. I think our role is to raise adults. Healthy, happy, confident, independent adults. If we do our jobs well as mothers, then our children should want to leave home to begin their own independent lives. By the time your kids are in their late teens, the heavy lifting of parenting is done. You’ve taught them most of what they have to learn from you. Now is the time to sit back a bit and let them spread their wings.
Focus on the celebration of a job well done. For two decades you have devoted an incredible amount of time to being a mother. You have likely sacrificed some of your own wants and needs in service of your children. It probably felt like there just wasn’t enough time in the day to get everything done, let alone pay attention to your personal wish list.

13-04-02 12:21 PM
Focus on your hopes and dreams. ••• Focus on self care. ••• Focus on forgotten or yet to be discovered interests.
With your kids grown, there is more time available for you. It’s easy to think of our kids growing up as the end of an era. That often causes us to look back at the past rather than forward to the future. We lament that our children no longer need us, and we might question how we can now make a contribution. Remember your role as mother never really stops, it just shifts. Your kids still need you, just in a different way.
Focus on new beginnings yours and your children’s. Midlife is all about re-inventing oneself. It affords you the luxury of being able to take the time for self-reflection. You are not the same person you were
when you first had children. You’ve learned and grown. You’ve shifted your thinking on some things. You get to redefine your role as mother now that you have adult children.
Focus on discovering who you are now. Midlife doesn’t have to be a crisis, unless you want it to be. There’s nothing empty about it. It’s full of opportunities if you choose to focus on them. So what do you do with an empty nest? Z Start calling it something else. HAPPINESS
Using visualization to create a fabulous life Whether you realize it or not, you are creating your life experience through the power of your mind and imagination. The power of imagination is not something you have to acquire; you have it already! You think in images even if you aren’t aware that you do, and you use your imagination every single day of your life. When you think about the past you are imagining. When you think about the future you are imagining. And as you imagine and concentrate on anything with feeling, you are bringing it to you. When you are happy and excited about something, you are using your power of imagination positively. You are imagining the best, and as you imagine the best, you are bringing it to you. Use your imagination to help you create the fabulous life that you want. Using the power of your imagination is something that comes to you naturally, but I want you to understand something about your imagination that will change your life: Everything is created twice, once in your mind and then in form. Look at the room you are in, notice any three things and realize someone had to think of this object for it to come into creation. When you imagine yourself with something you want you are tuning into the energy and frequency of it, and you being to think, act, and feel in accordance with this vibration. First, imagine something that you desire or prefer. It could be money, health, a particular job, a partner, a vacation, happiness, or anything else. Imagine yourself as if your desire was already in your life. You have this “thing” right now. Close your eyes and really get the sensation and feeling of yourself with your desire fulfilled. Pay special attention to what you see about yourself in your imagined picture. Notice how you are talking and moving. Look at your posture and your gestures and tone of voice. What language are you using? Are you generous and loving? Notice how you are acting. Notice how you are feeling. Look at everything about yourself in your imagined picture, but in particular, notice how happy you are! Capture every detail that you can, before you open your eyes. There is probably a difference between yourself right now and your imagined picture of yourself. 18 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Spring • 2013 Issue 11_spring 13.indd 18

••• When you are happy and excited about something, you are using your power of imagination positively. You are imagining the best, and as you imagine the best, you are bringing it to you. ••• Step into the life of your imagination like you are practicing a scene in a play. Walk like that now. Talk like that now. Act like that now. Feel the same as that now. Become happy now. Be that person now! When you become the person in your imagined picture you have shifted yourself to the frequency of your desire, and it must and will appear. Your imagination is showing you precisely the person you need to become. It is showing you what you look like and how to act and feel so that you can copy it and become that person! To help you become more and more like the person in your imagination, practice
often by closing your eyes and seeing yourself in the imagined picture with your desire. Then go about your day doing your best to act and feel like that person. You will be amazed at how little copying it takes before you see the evidence that your desire is coming. Z Elizabeth Manuel is a speaker and a coach. Five Reasons to Say FINANCIAL CAPSULE
to Tax-Free Income Nothing gets Canadians more excited (financially) than the words ‘tax free’. That’s why RRSPs are the most popular way to save for retirement. And it’s also why over 8 million Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) have been opened since the federal government introduced them in the 2008 federal budget. Is it right for you? Here’s a quick primer on the ‘ABCs’ of TFSAs, followed by 5 situations where the TFSA makes sense. THE ABCs of TFSAs First, we’re assuming that you’re a Canadian citizen, over 18 with a valid Social Insurance Number. You can contribute up to $5,500 a year to your TFSA. If you don’t put away the $5,500 per year, it carries forward indefinitely. Therefore if you haven’t started a TFSA yet, you’ve got $25,500 in unused contribution room as of January 1, 2013. • The money you contribute to a TFSA is not tax-deductible. But as long as the money stays invested, any income or capital gains will not be taxed. • TFSA earnings and withdrawals don’t count as ‘income’ for tax purposes. • Most investments that can be held in an RRSP or RESP are also eligible for a TFSA. • You can withdraw money without tax at any time, for any reason. And you can reinvest in a future year without reducing your contribution room. 5 Reasons to say “Yes” 1) The first reason, of course, is if you’re saving for something important. You can build a pool of savings without paying tax on the earnings as it grows. Here are 4 other lessobvious situations to consider a TFSA as part of your investment plan: 2) If you receive T3 or T5 slips from your financial institution, you’re being taxed on your savings. By registering those savings as a TFSA, the income you earn will be tax-free, helping your money grow faster. 3) If you maximize your RRSP each year, you can channel additional savings into a TFSA. A TFSA gives you a second source of funds in retirement that you can withdraw at any time without tax rules. 4) If you don’t have ‘earned income’. RRSPs are only available if you have ‘earned income’, which excludes many Canadians who earn their income from pension, dividends or capital gains. If you’re in this situation, the TFSA offers a much-needed tax break. 5) When RRIF minimum income is more than you need. If you or your elderly parents have a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF), you are required to withdraw a mini{continued on page 23} mum amount every year. 20 • Be Fabulous! 8 Tips to Use
RRSPs to YOUR
FINANCIAL CAPSULE
Maximum
If you didn’t get around to putting anything in that RRSP for 2012, there’s still a silver lining: you have increased your “contribution room” for 2013 and future years. But that’s not the point of an RRSP, now is it? It’s all about building a retirement nest egg that accumulates free of tax while you’re working. And the sooner you start, the more comfortable and confident you’ll be when your retirement door opens. So here are my top 8 tips to make sure you make the most of RRSPs as they relate to your personal vision of retirement: 1. Contribute. Now. It sounds simplistic, but as the saying goes, “you can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket.” If you can’t contribute your maximum in a year, contribute as much as you can. 2. Make monthly contributions! It can be difficult to come up with one large lump-sum RRSP contribution in February. By setting up a pre-authorized contribution plan and making monthly/quarterly contributions, saving for retirement will be
easier. Bonus: A systematic contribution plan lets you take advantage of dollar cost averaging. Ask me about it. 3. Reinvest your tax refund. It’s found money, even though it was yours all along. By boosting your refund back into your RRSP, you’ll be on the road to a million before you know it. 4. Don’t let risk paralyze you. Speaking of a million, it’s not easy to “save” a million bucks with interest rates as low as they’ve been in the last decade, so it’s also important to expand your investment choices. You can easily include mutual funds, exchange traded funds or stocks and can very often increase your return by one or two percentage points with only a small increase in risk. 5. Remember the tax man doesn’t treat all investments the same. Another knock against being too conservative, interest income is taxed at your highest marginal tax rate. If you’re ultra conservative, at least consider moving interest bearing securities inside your RRSP where they’ll grow without tax. {continued on page 23} Celebrating the baby boomer woman • 21

6 Steps to Kicking Off the
FINANCIAL CAPSULE
Conversation Your parents likely taught you all about money, helped you open your first bank account, and gave you an allowance. Sadly, over time, these roles frequently reverse themselves. Many of us in our 50s find ourselves in the position that we must help our aging parents manage their money. This can be awkward in some circumstances, but it’s much easier than hunting through filing cabinets for the right documents and discovering investments or debts for the first time after a parent’s heart attack. Or discovering that your hands are tied when it comes to making decisions without proper legal documentation.
Just like the decision to give up driving, asking for help with financial affairs can trigger significant feelings of loss of independence and a host of other emotions.
If you are, or soon might be, caring for aging parents, there are things you can do to help make this process easier.
4) Use technology. Automating things as much as possible can be a huge help. This includes bill payments as well as direct deposits.
1) Start early. While it’s a depressing and daunting topic, it’s much better to have an open conversation when everyone’s healthy, than a more difficult one later on. 2) Take your time. You’re busy and wanting to “just get it done”, but it’s a discussion that will likely be about 80% emotion and only 20% per cent about the tasks at hand and the decisions to be made.
3) Gather information. Find out where important documents are kept, including social insurance numbers, insurance papers, RRIFs, TFSAs, investments, banking information, wills and medical and pharmacy records. Know where safety deposit keys are stored and compile a list of key contacts including doctors, lawyers, insurance providers and financial advisors. When a stressful situation arises, having easy access to this information will ease some of the worry.
5) Arrange powers of attorney. A power of attorney is just as important as having a will. Without it, you will not be able to act on your parent’s behalf for any financial transactions, effectively tying your hands with potentially devastating consequences.

••• Many of us in our 50s find ourselves in the position that we must help our aging parents manage their money. ••• Ask your parent to designate someone to be given power of attorney for finances, as well as a durable power of attorney or healthcare directive for personal care. This will allow for important financial and health-related decisions to be made on your parent’s behalf, without delay. 6) Ask for help. Managing your aging parents’ health and financial care can put strain on your family, and can affect your own savings strategy. Meet with your financial advisor to make sure that both you and your parents are on the right track. Money means different things to different people and it’s important to make sure you’re working with someone who understands you and your story. Let’s connect over coffee. I’m ready to listen. Z T. 6. Make an “in-kind” contribution. If you don’t have enough cash to make your RRSP contribution consider contributing qualified securities that you already own rather than selling the securities and contributing the cash proceeds. There are a few tricks and special considerations, so make sure you get expert advice before you choose this path. I can help. 7. Consider international investments, Canada represents less than 3% of the world’s investment market. Investing in foreign securities can reduce risk and increase returns in your portfolio. 8. Don’t break open the RRSP piggybank! Your investments grow tax-free inside an RRSP. If you use money from your RRSP now, you’ll pay a big chunk of tax off the top, and lose the benefit of all that tax-sheltered growth. Money means different things to different people and it’s important to make sure you’re working with someone who understands you and your story. Let’s connect over coffee. I’m ready to listen. Z T. Enter the Flow How Yoga and Meditation Make Us “Juicy”
••• Whether your blank canvas is a hunk of clay, an empty page, camera crosshairs, a dance floor or otherwise, there’s nothing like the present for getting your creative juices flowing. ••• The time for creativity is now. Literally. In fact, I dare you: just try tapping that abundant source of passion, playfulness and possibility when you’re stuck worrying in the past or projecting into the future. It’s impossible. As an avid scribbler, who’s worked to deadline for many years, I’ve learned that fear and expectation are the Hoover Dam of writer’s block. There’s nothing scarier - or infinitely more magical - than a new, whiter-than-white word-processing document open on my MacBook screen. To avoid being sucked into a moonless vortex of perpetual wordless chaos, I give myself carte blanche (pronounced kärt bläNSH) or “Complete freedom to act as one wishes or thinks best.”
I put my feet on the ground, my hands on the keyboard. I clear my mind; breathe, and begin. Actually, the process is quite similar to my yoga and meditation practices - minus the tappity-tap of keys and low-frequency radiation from my monitor, of course. I focus on my breath; use my senses and “feeling” to get grounded and present in my body; then I ferret out space between the eight lanes of highway that are my thoughts; there, beyond mind, just like clouds parting in blue sky - I am; pure awareness. Every yoga practice is unique. The magic comes when the expectations go, and it’s just me and the mat, in the moment. As with anything, the journey often begins as a face-off between will and world. {continued on page 31}

Stroke
prevention You can’t control your family history, age, gender or ethnicity. But luckily, you can do something about other factors that could increase your risk of having a stroke, including obesity, diet, diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol. Stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Without oxygen-rich blood, brain cells begin to die. If the blood supply is not restored, the affected part of the brain dies, causing disability or death. Help prevent a stroke by learning more about the risk factors you can do something about, and those you can’t control.
STROKE
warning signs Stroke is a medical emergency. Recognizing and responding immediately to the signs of stroke by calling 9-1-1 or your local emergency number can significantly improve survival and recovery. What are the five signs of stroke? Stroke can be treated. That’s why it is so important to recognize and respond to the warning signs. WEAKNESS - Sudden loss of strength or sudden numbness in the face, arm, or leg, even if temporary. TROUBLE SPEAKING - Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding or sudden confusion, even if temporary. VISION PROBLEMS - Sudden trouble with vision even if temporary. HEADACHE - Sudden severe and unusual headache. DIZZINESS - Sudden loss of balance, especially with any of the above signs. If you experience any of these symptoms, call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number immediately. If a person is diagnosed with a stroke caused by a blood clot, doctors can administer a clot-busting drug available only at a hospital, and only within a few crucial hours after symptoms begin.* That’s why it is very important to be able to recognize the 5 warning signs of stroke and immediately call 9-1-1 or your local emergency number. Creativity and
Movement!
Tapping into your creative Mojo!
Children are wonderful teachers of creativity. I was reminded of this from a little boy named Tommy, a grade 2 student in California. During a presentation my dog Toby and I provided at his school, I noticed this little boy in an orange shirt sliding a piece of paper out towards me, every time I walked in the area he was seated. I made a mental note to myself to check this out. At the end of the presentation, this little boy made his way toward me and said “my teacher told me to show you this” as he handed me a bunch of papers stapled together. “I’m writing a book, just like you did.
Here are a few tips to expand your creativity, and as an author, have certainly helped me: 1. Find your creative zone. Where do you feel inspired? What places, rooms or atmospheres do your creative juices run on warp speed? Once you determine your creative zone, make it a point to go there and create there. 2. Be physical. Movement, and getting the blood flowing is an important element in creativity. As your energy increases, so does your creativity. 3. Always have a pen and paper. Try something new. Write in your non-dominant hand, or print in block letters. Use different colours. Use symbols and pictures, instead of words. 4. Give your brain a workout. Learning something new, challenging beliefs, and developing a new skill set is a great way to unlock creativity. 5. Silence the creativity critic. As your creativity is flowing, resist the urge to listen to the critic (the internal chatter) that says things like “that won’t work”, or other self defeating thoughts. 6. Give yourself permission to be creative. Set the intention, or as I like to say, frame your day. Decided in advance that you are creative and will tap into your creativity.

He explained that the family was actually his own, and pointed out his illustrations and the humor that he had woven through this rich story, a beautiful story. Tommy’s book was not limited by assumptions, limiting beliefs, or a preconceived idea about how things should be. This little grade two student with a big dream, a clear goal and a great grasp on creativity will no doubt be a bestselling author or illustrator one day, and he reminded me to simply dream. Generate new ideas

We are born with imaginations; however, as we age, and experience life, we sometimes lose the ability to tap into our creativity. Often our daily habits and routines actually stifle creativity, instead of inspiring it. Creativity, the ability to innovate and generate new ideas and move them to action, is quickly smothered by doubt
and preconceived ideas about how something “should be”. Instead, think about how it could be. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be possible. Children ask one simple question that comes from a place of pure curiosity… ”why?” Children also explore, create and dream with few to little barriers. They are open, and often like little sponges, soaking up all the world has to offer. As adults, we can benefit from tapping into our creative mojo with lessons learned from a child. As you start your day, think of yourself like Tommy, an open mind full of hope and readiness for what could be! Getting
Creative in the Kitchen
When was the last time you tried something completely different with an ingredient you thought you knew? Grilling peppers instead of turning them into a stir-fry? Roasting a whole head of garlic instead of mincing cloves for a batch of chili? Keeping things fresh and interesting in the kitchen means taking steps outside of your comfort zone from time to time, trying new produce – kumquats? lemon grass? – or finding a creative new use for a veggie you may have underestimated. If you’ve got any experience with radishes, you’ve probably eaten them raw in salads or served with dip as a snack. In restaurants, you may have seen them
carved into elegant little flowers. But did you know you can roast them? The Roasted Potatoes with Radishes recipe from our new Everyday Delicious 2013 cookbook is easy to whip up, and the potato and radish pairing works wonderfully. The roasting moderates the spiciness of the radishes, and brings out their natural sweetness. It’s also a visually stunning side dish at a meal, with the red skin turning a bright pink in the oven, and the exposed inside a creamy white. Explore, try new flavours, and don’t worry if you don’t love everything. You can’t make a new culinary friend without an initial introduction.

Being Creative in the Bedroom Tidy up
When you feel good and look good your attitude changes. You feel sexy. So go shopping and buy yourself all new undergarments. His and hers. Do some grooming. Both of you. Man-scaping is a lost art for many men over 40, teach him, show him- do it for him. Make sure you aren’t far behind, cleaned up and ready for action.

Communicate and Listen Our most powerful sexual organ is the tongue. Use if for telling the one you care about what you want. Tell them what feels good, what you want them to do and how you want them to do it. Don’t expect them to read your mind. Guide them, teach them and they will be able to give you exactly what you want. When your lover tells you what it is they want, listen.
being in the same place all the time? Is your bedroom the ‘bored’room? Then it is time to move on. Go somewhere new and exciting. That living room sofa is looking for some afternoon action. The kitchen counter is the perfect height, I know he has thought about THAT before. Book a hotel for the evening and plan a meeting in the lobby bar, some role playing isn’t cheesy, it’s exciting and sets the mood for a wild night of play.
Play time These are not meant to replace your partners. These are for adding a new level of play and excitement to relationships. When you can trust your partner enough to bring in toys to your relationship you know you have gone to a new place. A fun, exciting and enjoyable place both of you can explore together.
inner artist Let out your inner artist using paint or chocolate to creative an intimate studio and explore each other. You will see each other in a way that is new to both of you.
Take away a sense When you remove one sense you turn up another. Taking away Sight is an intense one. Use a blindfold. You will heighten the senses of taste, touch and scent. Use some edibles, some sensory enhancers like feathers, ice, warm massagers on your partners skin. Use massage creams that are scented with aphrodisiac scents, such as Plumeria, Vanilla, Cinnamon, Ginger, Ylang Ylang, Almond & Lavender. There are also massage products that are infused with pheromones which will kick things off before you get hot and sweaty and your own pheromones kick into gear. a wild night of play.
You can be deeply in love- stuck in a rut-single and looking or content on your own. All of us have our own story and all of us can find ways to restore our Passion with those most important to us, whether it be our lover or ourselves . 32 • Be Fabulous! Read to one another Erotica. Books about
sexual play that you have been interested in exploring together. The best way to learn is to educate and the best way to educate is to read. It’s hard to explain sometimes what you have read so go ahead and read something to your partner while in bed together. The words go from your mouth to their ear and sometimes, the idea is so good, you want to try it right away.
Not that way Challenge yourselves to be different. There are so many sexual positions to be done, had and tried. Make sure you and your partner don’t do the same one twice. It will take thought, inventiveness and creativity but you can do it. You will have favourites but change them up. Make it interesting.
Sexting
Yes really! Not just the young and silly do this. Foreplay starts in the morning and can last all day. Granted if your boss has access to your phone, you may not want to participate in this but if not. It is a lot of fun. You and your partner can sneak ideas back and forth about what you would like to do to one another when you finally see each other. Send a teasing picture to get the excitement going.
Make it quick There is a lot to be said for a quickie every now and again. When you sneak one in before you are expecting company or are running out the door for an event if will put a flush in your cheeks and give you both a secret only you know about and it puts you in the mood for a great love making session when you get home later.
Take the time
So often we get too busy with work, kids, friends and life and we put our partners on the back burner because we know they love us and they will be there. Don’t take them for granted. They may not always be there. Schedule them if you have to. Make them important and the passion will grab hold once again. Make dates in your day timer. Make sure you both put your relationship as a priority. Afternoon delight is a great way to recharge.
Get rid of the flannels Sleep in the nude or sleep in something you feel sexy in. When you feel it, you radiate it, your partner senses it and wants a piece of it. No pun intended. O.K. it was intended but it is true and it works.
Give up control
It’s not that difficult. Lay back, have light restraints to tie your wrists together, let your partner please you. Let them take you to edge and then back again and you can return the favour. Incorporate some of the other ideas in this list and it could be an experience like no other.

Creating an effective workout??
Need more kettlebells!! A kettlebell is a round iron ball with a handle like a suitcase and comes in various weights. They were used back in the 1700 in Russia as a military training tool and in recent years has been making a comeback into the local gyms, boot camps, cross fit arenas and my backyard!
FYI,
kettlebells are: • Heavy: start lighter and work up to a heavier weight
• Hard on the hands: remove all rings and bracelets/watches and use chalk or gloves, you will eventually get used to it. My hands remind me how hard I worked! • Going to make you sweat: that is why you are there. No Sweat = No Progress • Going make you feel powerful: AWESOME!
The kettlebell changed my life from the inside out! It gave me confidence, it empowered me to take charge and helped me lose more weight than I ever imagined. Kettlebell training coupled with proper nutrition transformed me from a size 18 to a size 10. Even at my ideal weight, I still include regular kettlebell training due to their effectiveness. I love the powerful workouts that are done in 20 - 25 minutes! To get started in kettlebell training, I always recommend training with a Registered Kettlebell Coach.
••• A kettlebell workout offers a very different workout compared to machines or free weights. If your goal is to lose weight, reduce body fat and show off some great shoulders in that L.B.D. then Kettlebell training is for you! It is time to train like a man but look like a goddess! ••• Amazing Results
Kettlebell training is hard work but the results are amazing. Healthy and fit people don’t get that way by walking on a treadmill watching TV or chatting with their friends at the gym. The unique kettlebell training using ballistic movements (the basic swing, clean, snatch and other fast exercises) giving you incredible muscle endurance and will melt fat when done in fast high repetitions. These high rep-training routines also work your cardio better than a treadmill or stepper!

Ballistic movements are not the only ones that can be done with the simple kettlebell, there are many abdominal and core exercises as well. All Kettlebell movements are more challenging and effective with the added value of the offset weight challenging your core better than traditional dumbbells. KEttLEbELL chaLLEngE
••• Weight training is also the only type of exercise that can substantially slow, and even reverse, the declines in muscle mass, bone density and strength.
I challenge you to a 6 week Kettlebell workout! Find a trainer, make a commitment by writing down your goals, strategies and plan your workout days. A balanced kettlebell training program, healthy nutrition (I like the “clean eating” plan by Tosca Reno) and a solid commitment you can create the body, mind and spirit of a fit and Fabulous@ 50 woman! I have been on a journey of complete wellness. Along with my commitment to fitness, I practice mediation and yoga, balance healthy nutrition with vitamins and supplementation and use great skincare products. Fabulous@50 Women tell us what they really want for Mother’s Day I like to make brunch @ my house with my kids and their kids. My favorite present was from my 30 yr old son. He found a clear ball and inserted a picture of the 2 of us in it. Barb
I find this relaxing & we can visit longer then when we go out. Deborah
My favourite Mother’s Day memory was when I was a single mom. My two children were in junior high (grades 7 & 8) and they decided to cook me a special dinner. They made bruschetta, spaghetti and caesar salad, using a total of 17 cloves of garlic. Needless to say I didn’t have a cold or flu (or date) for the next year! Andrea 36 • Be Fabulous! HEALTHY MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH Nothing says “You’re the best, Mom” like a meal made-with-love. And being that brunch is between breakfast and lunch you want something delicious and healthy. Here are a few suggestions. • Fluffy Almond-Millet Waffles • Blueberry Maple Syrup • Crispy Millet Hash Browns with Sunny-Side Eggs • Shaved Asparagus Salad Passion Fruit Mimosas • 1.5 tsp grenadine • 1.5 cups chilled passion fruit juice • 1 bottle chilled prosecco (750 ml) • Orange Slices (serve the children passion fruit juice with sparkling water and orange slices)
