Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes

Is your vision blurry? This past couple of months has been a whirlwind. Planning the Fabulous@50 Experience is always a ton of work. But this year we added in a fundraiser for The Edmonton Dream Centre called “Entertaining the Dream “ and the “Queen of the Day” contest. And just to spice the whole thing up, I took a trip in between to New York for a wedding. My vision for Fabulous@50 was always about inspiring, education and empowering other women, but along the way, I think I lost what inspired me. But luckily opportunities show up. My dear friend Bonnie Jean McAllister is part of an artist’s guild that represents 17 artists in Beaumont. In a casual conversation I asked her if I could become part of the Painted Door on Main Artists Guild. One thing lead

to another and I was invited to show my art to the other artists. I was so nervous, not really sure if I would be accepted. I was, and now I am so honoured to be part of this family of artists. Everytime I go to work my shift, I am so inspired by the beautiful work of the other artists. But it is more than that, it is the feeling of belonging. Being part of a group of individuals that share your vision, and care about your success and well-being. It is never too late, to pull out the thing you loved to do, but never made time for. Dianna Bowes is the creative director of Fabulous@50 and editor of Be Fabulous! Dianna is also the author of The Fabulous@50 Re-Experience - Refresh your mind, body and spirit. Using laughter to heal herself and others What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life? Watching my kids grow into productive adults, doing what they enjoy. Moving into my new house and a new chapter in life. Volunteering more.

spring. It is truly an amazing “rebirth” What makes you laugh? Too many things to list.. Laughter is truly good for the soul.

When life knocks you down, what lifts you up? Family and good friends. And trying to refocus on what is good in my life. How do you celebrate when you achieve a goal or a milestone? With friends and family. Who most inspires you and why? My mom. She raised 4 kids with my dad all while working full time with sometimes a weekend job to make ends meet. She was always “hands on”. Going to all our sporting and extracurricular events, sewing figure skating costumes, making 4 halloween costumes every year, vegetable gardening, canning, freezing, throwing birthday parties, entertaining and putting on amazing holiday meals...and somehow having a spotless house. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? We must stop focusing on what “society” views as beautiful . We need to empower each other by knowing we all have our own unique beauty. Put down the filler and botox! Magazine models are not something young girls should model themselves after. They are not real, they are fabricated..and that is a hard act to follow. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? It’s ability to hibernate in the winter and grow again into full beauty every

Tea with Sue Paulson

Strong Women Need Cherishing, Too! I feel so privileged to have been surrounded by strong women all my life. Both grandmothers, my mother, assorted aunts, and many dear friends are included as part of this tribe. Most of these women were unsung heroes. Yet they are models for me of courage, determination, and resilience. Let me tell you about the impact of a few of these women. My most recent example is Blanche Jackson, the mother of a dear friend and soul sister. Blanche, who turned 99 in August is a healthy and vibrant woman. Throughout my cancer treatments she was a staunch prayer warrior with an unshakable faith in her God’s ability to heal me. She lives her life in constant gratitude and is endlessly curious about the daily lives of those whose paths cross hers. She never watches the news, believing that “what I don’t know can’t hurt me.” When asked on her birthday what words of wisdom she had for us she said, “Everyone has to live their own life, no matter what anyone

else says.” She is adored and revered in her small community in Ohio. What thrills me the most as I interact with strong women like Blanche is what I learn from each one. Both my grandmothers taught me the value of determination in the face of adversity. They lived through the depression in the 1930’s so they learned to be tough. My mother taught me to strive for my goals. Dear friends showed me the value of sisterhood. Through their adversities, I learned about grace under fire. Cherished

While I revel in being strong, there’s one challenge that’s tricky for us – many have trouble believing that we deserve to be cherished and adored despite our strength. For many years I didn’t feel worthy of being cherished nor did I believe I had a right to expect it because of my fortitude and competence. I was so self-sufficient that it appeared that I didn’t need anything from anyone, particularly the men in my life.

One dear friend, when I was going through a particularly tough time said, “Sue, I don’t think you need to be so fiercely independent.” It was really hard for me to ask for help, but after she made that comment I did ask. I suspect now that my ex-husbands would have shown their adoration much more had I been open to receiving it! Feminism and women’s liberation did not do us any favors in this department, for while we did learn to stand in our own power, we sacrificed the idea of being cared for and cared about. I don’t think the two are mutually exclusive. (I love it when someone holds open a door for me or helps me with my bags – especially if it’s a man!) The first step, of course, is to learn to cherish and adore ourselves. It means honoring the fragile and vulnerable parts of us along with the strong bits. Whether it’s a bubble bath, a good cry, or help from the guy next door with the heavy lifting, we need to demonstrate our high regard for ourselves. Some of my single friends were recently sharing the key characteristics of the men they would love to attract. I nodded in agreement but then added, “I want someone who adores me.” Trust me, there are men out there like that. I’ve seen them in action. My older brother is one of them. Some of their wives appreciate them for

this lovely quality; some just take this behavior for granted and demand more. With sixteen years into my second 50, I may or may not attract a man who will honor, cherish, and adore me. I hope I do, but if I don’t, I will continue to find new ways to give that to myself and particularly give it to the other strong women in my life. What will you do today to cherish yourself and honor the strong woman that is you? An inspirational speaker and award-winning author, Sue Paulson inspires others to love their magnificence. Her third book, “Magnificent Misery – From Adversity to Ecstasy” is now available at Audrey’s and Ascendant Books in Edmonton or through Amazon. To book Sue, e-mail her at sue@suepaulson.com. Mountain of Wisdom Life Lessons from Kilimanjaro

Team Kilimanjaro with Barbara Edie in blue jacket.

“It is always fun to create the impossible,” Walt Disney said. And for me, it’s even more fun to create the seemingly impossible in your fifties!

about what it really takes to realize my own impossible dreams—especially at an age when some believe it’s all “downhill from here.”

On Sept. 25, 2016 I reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro at 5895 metres (about 19,341 feet) with seven other intrepid soul adventurers.

Some of my fifty-something friends thought I was crazy, and admitted they would never even attempt this climb.

While many people climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the fourth largest of the Seven Summits, only about 45% of all climbers who attempt the summit succeed. Reaching the top of Kilimanjaro is a challenging journey of the body, mind, and spirit—and any age. At age 55, I saw climbing Kilimanjaro as a great adventure, a personal dream to fulfil, and part of a greater mission to raise money for 40 abandoned children in Kenya. What I learned traversing the rocky edges, steep inclines, and dust-filled switchbacks of this epic mountain taught me a lot

Here are three of the most valuable life lessons I gained from climbing Kilimanjaro. 1) GO “POLE POLE.” (Pronounced “pollay”) Pole, pole means to go slowly. As we climbed single file, a guide led us in slow and measured steps about half the speed of a normal walking pace. At first it was difficult to walk so slowly, but soon we realized that was the pace required to acclimatize to the altitude and give us the endurance to climb anywhere from 5 km to 14 km a day. Just like the classic tale of the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race…and reaches the summit. In contrast, those who insist on climbing

14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2016

the mountain too fast, often extremely fit and athletic types, don’t give their bodies enough time to adjust to higher altitudes and lower levels of oxygen, ascend the mountain too quickly, and succumb to altitude sickness or exhaustion before getting to the summit. 2) FOCUS ON THE PRESENT… WHAT’S IMMEDIATELY IN FRONT OF YOU A young and very wise guide gave me this simple but profound advice: the key to climbing Kilimanjaro—and any mountain-is to focus only on the next few steps ahead. Do not look up at the massive mountain to see how far you have yet to climb or glance below to see how far you’ve already come. These actions usually engage negative thoughts such as “I can’t go any farther,”“It’s too high,” or “I’ll never make it,” and immediately drain your energy. In other words, stay focused on the present moment, not worrying about the future or dwelling on the past, neither of which is useful in propelling you forward in life… or up a mountain. We hear all the time about “being present” or “the power of now,” but for me this was no longer theory—it was a physical and immediate experience of this universal truth. Stay in the present moment and take one, mindful, step at a time. This single piece of advice helped me maintain my energy and was probably the biggest reason I didn’t experience any sickness or struggle on the way to the top. 3) IF STRUGGLING, RE-FOCUS ON A HIGHER EMOTION When taking on any big task, whether it’s climbing a mountain, running a business, or starting over at 50, if you find yourself thinking about how hard it’s going to be, the long distance ahead, or how you’re going to manage the next big ‘rocky patch’, you’ll feel like giving up. That’s the time to re-focus on a higher, positive

Barbara Edie stands at the top of Kilimanjaro.

emotion such as the joy and excitement of reaching your goal, the beauty around you, or making the adventure fun. This immediately engages your imagination, and boosts your energy and endurance. For example, after the eight-hour climb to Kili’s summit, I needed to power up for the six-hour descent. So I decided to make it fun by imagining I was “skiing” down the mountain with my poles in the loose shale and having a blast. When I activated the high-vibration emotions of play, joy, and fun, I had more than enough energy to make it down the mountain. Standing on the summit of Kilimanjaro was the perfect example of what I write about in my latest book, Creating the Impossible: What It Takes to Bring Your Vision to Life. Whatever your mountain to climb is, literally or figuratively, it could be leaving the corporate world, writing a book, or finding the love of your life at 50, it’s only ‘impossible’ until it’s done.

Barbara Edie’s latest book, Creating the Impossible: What It Takes to Bring Your Vision to Life, will be available on Amazon Nov. 21, 2016. To learn more about Barbara’s writing and adventures visit www.barbaraedie.com Celebrating baby boomer women • Interactive eMagazine • 15

The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson

Mulling About Friendship Once upon a time, many years ago now, a friend and I got together to talk about coaching and counselling, and generally being helpful to people. He brought the ingredients to make an apple cider, which we put in my slow cooker so it could mull while we chatted. Up to this point I had never tried a mulled cider or any kind of hot apple drink, and I was floored by the amazing taste of warmed apple and spices that worked their way around my mouth. This is an elegant drink meant for sipping that will warm you right up. The original batch we made was very simple. Apple juice, a heaping spoonful of frozen concentrated orange, and a heaping spoonful of frozen concentrated lemon, plus a couple of cinnamon sticks went into the crock pot, and made the apartment smell like Christmas. Nowadays, I like to make mulled cider before any Fall or Winter party. You can

switch ingredients around or add more of one thing than another – the important thing to remember is that if people love it they’ll want the recipe, so it’s a good idea to keep track of what you’re putting in the pot. Feel free to play around with the spices, and even use different types of fruit juice. I prefer to use whole spices instead of ground so there isn’t a bunch of grit in the bottom of my mug. Around harvest time and well into the new year, you can often find fresh pressed apple cider at the farmer’s market or in the coolers at the supermarket (check near the apples and other produce instead of where the chilled juices are usually located). If you have a juicer at home, you can even make your own, and experiment with blending different types of apples. Fresh cider is well worth the effort to track down, since it is not filtered; the apple pulp in the cider gives it a ton of flavour and intensity that is missing from processing that happens with apple juice.

16 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I November • 2016

Making a mulled cider only takes about 10 minutes to prep, and it is ready to serve after about a 20 minute simmer. Prepare it in a crock pot if you want to keep it warm through the evening, or make it ahead of time in your stock pot to speed things up. Ingredients 4 whole cinnamon sticks 16 Whole cloves 10 whole allspice berries 1 large or 2 small star anise 1 medium orange 1 small lemon 8 cups of apple cider (or apple juice) ½ - 1 Cup Amber or Dark Rum, to taste (optional – don’t use it if there are kids sharing it) Method Scrub the outside of your orange and lemon to remove any wax and to expose the natural oils. Push 8 cloves into the orange and 8 into the lemon, then place the fruit in the bottom or your pot. Add the allspice berries and star anise if you have some, then pour in the apple cider. Put it on medium heat on the stove, or put it on high in the slow cooker, bring it to a boil, add the rum, then simmer on low for about 30 minutes. Ladle the hot liquid into a fun mug, being careful to leave the

spices behind in the pot so they continue flavouring things. This cider is so versatile you can replenish it throughout your party, even while you are busy chatting and socializing. Serve the cider until about 20 percent of it remains in the pot, then top it up with another 6 cups of cider, let it heat through (no need to boil and simmer again), and serve. You can replenish your vessel several times until the spices and fruit are exhausted. The last dregs of cider will be quite heavily spiced and may not taste ideal on their own, however, you could spoon some over ice cream, French Toast, or even oatmeal. Try to have some on hand for when you are entertaining, or put it into a thermos and take it with you and share it with a friend while you do some winter adventuring. Take pictures of you enjoying your mulled cider and tag me on Instagram – if you’re one of the first 50 people to do so, I’ll send you a treat in the mail. For real! Pam Robertson is the food lover behind The Ladybirds’ Kitchen (www.ladybirdskitchen. com), though she also has a lot of food stuff on Instagram, where she is @PamDRobertson. Her goals include helping people get excited about cooking and to #EatInspired! If you want to get in touch join her online, or just pick up the phone and call 780-232-0083.

Life is just a Phase by Laurel Vespi

Five Simple Ways to Practice Self Care Today

One of the wonderful things about women is our natural ability to nurture and care for others. Unfortunately for many women, we forget that our own self care is a critical component in being able to successfully give to others. As a result, we put everyone else’s needs first or feel a sense of guilt when we do say no. All of that can often leave us feeling dragged out, overwhelmed and maybe even a little cranky. Self care is not simply finding time to get to the gym or eating well, although that’s a great place to start. There are also emotional, intellectual and spiritual aspects of self care, It’s knowing which activities fill us up rather than drain us, what feeds our spirit and connects us to our deepest passion and purpose. When we nurture that part of ourselves, we are more able to create boundaries that let us support others in a way that doesn’t deplete all of our resources. One of the biggest obstacles to practicing self care is thinking that we don’t have enough time. There are some simple ways to begin nurturing yourself that require 10 minutes or less of your time.

Don’t underestimate the power of these basic self care practices. Done consistently, they are a great way to begin filling yourself back up. They are also things that you can do for free so your only investment is in yourself. Here are 5 simple ways to begin practicing self care today: Walk. A ten minute stroll around your neighborhood or on your lunch hour is a great daily practice that allows you to take a break from your busy schedule. Walking is a form of meditation that creates a sense of calm and well being. Your body will love you and so will your spirit. Breathe. A deep cleansing breath is a perfect way to let go of tension. Physiologically it elicits a relaxation response within your body. Most people underestimate the power of the breath to center and ground them. Create a simple and frequent reminder, such as crossing the threshold of a doorway, to signal that it’s time to pause and take a deep breath. Imagine that you are inhaling calm and exhaling stress.

Be Inspired. Read or listen to something that inspires you. Every day you are bombarded with junk food for the brain. Give your heart and soul some better food for thought. Borrow thought provoking books from the library, visit inspiring websites, listen to music that moves you, post quotes or photos that lift you up. Your thoughts create your reality. When you feel inspired, you will feel more energized. Reflect. Take 10 minutes to pause and reflect on where you are in the moment. Ask yourself, “How am I right now?’ “What do I need right now?” Sometimes just the act of acknowledging that you are tired or angry is helpful. Connecting with what you need in that moment – whether it’s a hug or a drink of water - is a way to nurture yourself. You might also find that you are feeling wonderful and you’ll then have

an opportunity to smile and be grateful. Practicing regular mindful reflections allows you to be in touch with your feelings rather than stepping over them. Connect with Nature. Human beings are naturally drawn to nature. We are hard wired to connect with other living things. Bring more nature into your life every day - take five minutes and pet your dog or cat, put flowers on your desk, sit in your backyard and listen to the birds. Reconnecting with nature restores us at a heart level. We are reminded that we are part of a giant web of living beings and not solely responsible for the needs of others. Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. WELL -BEING through a Good Relationship with MONEY Have you thought about your relationship with money? For many it’s problematic. Growing up, we may hear conflicting views about money like those identified by Kahler & Fox in “Conscious Finance: Uncover Your Hidden Money Beliefs and Transform the Role of Money in Your life” (2007). • There is always enough – There is never enough • Money brings happiness – Not having money brings happiness • Money is important – Money is unimportant • I don’t deserve money – Money is evil I believe that even successful people who run businesses, cities and countries and contribute to global welfare feel hesitant to take control of their finances. Good relationships show, and give, happiness. It’s time to get familiar with your finances because a good relationship with money increases overall wellbeing. And, financial planning helps you create a good relationship with money. Financial planning for retirement, business growth, estate or trust plans, takes specific knowledge. Busy professionals,

optimize your time. Help is available. Financial advisors provide advice so that you can make informed investment decisions. They work with you to develop a plan that meets your values and your comfort with risk. Responsible investing in companies meeting environmental, social and governance standards, addresses both of these issues. Good relationships increase likelihood of success, but need nurturing and adapting as people and circumstances evolve. Regularly assessing your financial plan keeps you on track to your life goals. Honesty and the courage to tackle fears head-on help resolve problems that arise, keeping the relationship healthy. As an Investment Advisor, that is how I support your relationship with money. Having transitioned through big life changes, I understand risk and fear. I love building good relationships with clients as we build their financial plan. Whether planning for today or tomorrow, a business, retirement, large purchases or elder care, it’s important to work together to incorporate their needs and goals into their financial plan and it’s rewarding to keep it on track with regular checkpoints. You deserve a plan as unique as you.

Does She, or Doesn’t

SHE?

The topic of cosmetic enhancements has always fascinated me, not to mention speculating about whether or not someone has “had any work done”. My hands often wander up to my own face as I contemplate my disappearing jaw line… #mirrormirroronthewall I remember my mother’s attempts to ward off her frown lines by faithfully applying special scotch tape to be worn over night. She also went through a series of grimacing neck stretches to keep her jowls at bay. We do what we can. Some of us just throw on a designer scarf. A recent get together with my sister began with a visit to her doctor for some “maintenance work” (translation: Botox). I finally got to meet the man who “does” my sister (and at least one other friend) and to have an interesting chat with him about some of the newest and best antiaging procedures as he deftly needled my sister’s brow into submission (His fabulous view into Coal Harbour and the North Shore mountains is a good distraction from all those tiny injections, by the way). Things To Consider

It’s one thing to sit by and watch someone else get a forehead full of jabbing injections but would you want the same treatment for yourself? Although Botox is so refined now you still have to consider who wields the needle,

however fine it might be. There is an art to it. Make sure that your doctor of choice has had proper training and maintains a good track record for natural results with his or her patients. Also, you need to know what age concerns you are addressing when getting any injections. Being self-aware and happy with yourself to begin with should be a given and will make a big difference to your anti-aging enhancements (or if you choose to even bother with any). The “number 11” area, those vertical creases which appear over the nose and between the eyebrows are a huge aging concern for men and women alike and were at one time the bane of my sister’s existence. These troublesome lines add years to the appearance as well as contribute to the “bitchy resting face” syndrome. However, the more you get Botox, the better your skin gets over time and the longer the pleasing results last. I have really noticed the difference in my sister’s face since she started with Botox treatments.

You’re Curious, Aren’t You?

As I watched Dr. X minister to my sister and carry on a lively conversation with us at the same time, it got me thinking about “things to do/budget for when I’m earning money again”; a topic which keeps me happy because I get to make lists. Although choosing a doctor and dermatologist is largely based on word of mouth and according to one’s needs, the initial meet and greet is deeply personal. There really needs to be a connection and trust factor in place between you and the doctor. I consider myself to be fairly well read on the subject of beauty and I try to be up to date on the latest procedures, cost, availability in Canada, risk factors, etc. when it comes to any anti-aging measures that do not come out of a jar. Believe me, I’m going to do my due diligence and be informed about the doctor I choose to provide me with any cosmetic service especially if it concerns my face. Oh, and just a side note: Although I’m writing about faces here, we are a whole package. Taking care of oneself as a whole is obviously implied. Another note: This blog post is only my opinion and musings. I’m not an expert, a doctor, nor have I had anything “done”. I’m simply taking what I do know, and what I am consid-

ering for myself with regards to non-invasive beauty treatments and writing about it because the subject as a whole, interests me (especially the before and after pictures). I’m not suggesting that any of you rush out and do stuff to your faces or any other part of your body, nor am I endorsing any particular product, procedure or administrator of such. What I am suggesting is that you like yourself to begin with and to be well informed on the subject of anti-aging, as it applies to you and your concerns, if any. Fresh Factor

Dr. X asked my sister what she was looking to achieve with the treatments she was considering - what she would like to see in the mirror. She replied “myself at twenty-five.” He suggested that she bring along a picture of herself at that preferred and ideal age on her next visit - it would give him a map of how to address her concerns. Let me stress this: he’s not going to make her twenty-five again, but he CAN restore volume. I’ve seen his handiwork on my sister’s face from a few years ago and believe me, it was so subtle that only the three of us knew anything had been done. Ironically, with results that good, she was eager to talk about it. She looked rested and refreshed. For her personal concerns, it was loss of volume which he tailored to her natural facial shape.

Her lips were HER lips. At age twentysomething. As my sister said so eloquently, “It looked great for about four years - it’s only recently that I look caved-in and gaunt in the cheeks. I look like I’ve been dragged through a knot hole.” (OK, this very dramatic comment by my sis was meant to be funny. She looks great - people who meet her for the first time often clutch at their chests upon learning her age and gasp, “You’re HOW OLD???”) One of the things that Dr. X said really struck me. He said “Smile. Remember to smile when you look in the mirror because everybody looks better when they smile - and it makes a difference in your outlook”. Be realistic in your goals.

I think the goal these days is to look refreshed, happy and confident. To look like your best version of yourself. Dr. X then consulted with my sister regarding where and how he could fix that loss of volume for her if she wanted to go ahead and add that on to her initial Botox treatment. He also told her the specific injectable that he would use, the areas where he would treat, how many units it would take and what the cost would be to achieve the desired result. Ultimately - is it something she wants to pay for at this time - does it fit her immediate budget? Can she live without it? That’s the ticket for anyone considering cosmetic treatments. Chins Up!

Personally I have always tried to maintain my “best self”. I continue to take good care of my skin within the budget that works for me. The foundation of great skin helps me decide what I want to start add-

ing to my beauty care regime - whether it will be an injection of some sort or a radio frequency tightening treatment, for example. Restoring and maintaining my original contours in a pleasing and natural manner - to refresh - would be my goal. Having more natural facial fat also helps shape my treatments. Although we are sisters, we have totally different faces and have aged differently. I’ve said it before and Dr. X repeated it too; I have completely different aging concerns and have had a different level of stress and experience in life from my sister, or from anyone else for that matter. Duct Tape?

For now, I’m still getting by with dimmed lights and a forgiving hairstyle with bangs. However, I am starting to notice my increasingly worrisome resemblance to old photos of my lantern-jawed ancestors. Duct tape is not an option. Will I or won’t I, when it comes to cosmetic procedures? Be it frozen, tightened, injected, plumped, rejuvenated, exfoliated or removed all together, only my doctor needs to know, along with the handful of people who read my blog. ...but I am considering it.

Dr. X’s business card is within easy reach… after all, a few “units” of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Heather is a Vancouver, BC based blogger, fashion, beauty and lifestyle enthusiast.
