Editor’s note • June 2015

Let Them Hear Our Voices I was talking to a friend who will be turning 43 shortly. She told me that once she turned 40 her confidence shot up and she was finally comfortable in her own body. She now feels free to dress and say whatever she wants.

said “ in order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” I couldn’t agree more! The fashion feature this month is attire for the mother of the bride. I was excited to take on this assignment, as women over 40 are more powerful than ever. We have independence, careers and purchasing power. Plus, I love weddings. Writing the copy was easy, what was not was getting suitable photos for my spread. To my dismay the women modeling attire that a mother of the bride may consider were all in their 30s. Retailers that sell clothing to women 40 plus want our business, yet shun us when it comes to their advertisements. I wonder the effect it has on the self-esteem of women. It seems that we are expected to look like women in our 30s.

It gave me cause to reflect. In July I will be turning 46. I’m not going to lie; I do everything I can to look youthful including visits to my Dermatologist for Botox and fillers. Despite my fight to stay youthful I too feel more confident now. I feel as though I have come into my own. I ignore “the rules” and experiment with fashion. I’m much more daring than I was in my 30s. Although my body has been somewhat ravaged by a progressive neuromuscular disease, I adorn it in a way that celebrates who I am. I wear bright colours and bold make-up. Coco Chanel once It is up to us to change this. We must speak out against the way we are portrayed in advertising. Sadly the only place you see middle-aged women is in pharmaceutical and Depends commercials. We are consumers of fashion, cosmetics and luxury goods. Collectively we must send the message that ageism is not OK and that although we are no longer in our 20s and 30s we are even more fabulous than we were in our youth. b Laurie Slipchuk Young Editor

our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. {LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}

Ooops!

I missed the big day

Planning, planning, planning. Then whoosh the big day is gone. Whether it’s a wedding, a retirement party or a milestone birthday, we often get swept away on the day with details and emotions and end up not being fully present to the celebration.

front of me and how I was feeling. Big events are busy events. There are endless details to manage and moments of pause are not normally part of the design. Here are some tips on how not to miss the big day:

“Stop and breathe. Just look around and take it all in for a moment.”

Set an intention. After everything is said and done, the most important things are not about how the buffet looked or if someone’s speech went a little too long. Start the day by reflecting on what this event is really about. What is most important about this day? Choose a word that best captures the essence – love, celebration, connection, joy. Then repeat your intention throughout the day: This day is about _______.

It was the best gift anyone could have given me. Those few moments created the most striking memory I have of that day. Even ten years later, I can still recall with vivid detail what was unfolding in

Breathe. In times of stress or high emotion, it’s pretty common to hold our breath. Taking a moment to simply breathe allows you to return to your body and the present moment.

That almost happened to me at the launch party for my first book. It was a charity fundraiser with 300 guests. There was lots of food and music and non-stop signing of books. Quite frankly it was a whirlwind. Fortunately for me, a good friend pulled me aside at one point and said,

6 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

You might need a reminder to stop and breathe like wearing a special bracelet or writing a tiny letter B on your wrist. Pause and look around. Take in all the sights and sounds. It’s during these quiet moments that we often see the little things that are happening. It also gives us an opportunity to connect with our emotions. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling right now? What do I need in this moment?” It’s easy to forget to do this in the midst of the busyness of the event so partner with someone to meet up periodically and take a pause break. MAKE MEMORIES

Return to the present moment. At any event there are lots of details to manage in order for things to run smoothly. Details require future thinking. There’s nothing wrong with that unless you never bring yourself back to the present moment. If we are always thinking ahead to what’s

next, we miss what is actually happening right now. Notice when you are pulled into the details of what’s coming up and bring yourself back to the present . Make memories. In our attempt to record the moment, we spend a lot of time looking through a camera lens rather than capturing the moment in our hearts. Leave the photos and videos to the professionals and focus on making lasting memories instead. Memories are created with our senses. Really taste the cake, groove to the music, smell the flowers. Maya Angelou said that life is measured in the moments that take our breath away. Make sure you don’t miss them on the big day. b Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. Mother

Can the of the Bride Wear Black? What are you going to wear to your daughter or son’s wedding? Attire etiquette has changed over the last several years. If you are the step-mother, then the old saying still holds true today: wear beige. That’s right. Don’t draw any attention to yourself. You can’t upstage anybody on the day of the wedding so it is best to keep it on the quiet side in both colour and style. Modesty is key. THE BRIDE IS THE BOSS

My mother of the bride and groom clients often say the bride doesn’t care what they wear but believe me if you get it wrong, she will care! Seek ideas what the bride would like you to wear before you spend anytime shopping. It’s her day. Let her decide on the look and feel of the wedding. Pecking order of who decides what they are going to wear 1. the bride 2. the groom 3. the bridesmaids 4. the groomsmen 5. mother of the bride 6. mother of the groom 7. step-mothers IT’S ABOUT THE PICTURES

Consider how your dress will look in the pictures next to the bride/groom and

their bridal party. You don’t want to stick out. You want to blend in as an extension to the overall look and feel of the bridal party. You will need to know dress length, colour and style and choose your dress accordingly to make the pictures perfect. Generally speaking, if the bride is in long, the mother of the bride should be in long.

8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

The mother of the groom wears the same length dress as the mother of the bride. The mother of the groom cannot upstage the mother of the bride. COLOUR IS KEY

Can the mother of the bride wear black? Etiquette is changing. Years ago the answer was a clear cut no. Today, most people would agree black is a successful option. Again, the bride must be consulted first if she is ok with you wearing black. It’s her day. Black is considered elegant and sophisticated so would work for a more formal wedding. However, as a professional image consultant, I do not recommend wearing black. Black is very strong in pictures and may overpower the overall vibe in the bridal party pictures. Metallic colours are a better choice regardless of the formality of the wedding. Try gunmetal gray, all the blue tones or silver. Try to avoid champagne or beige; leave that for the step-mothers or grandmothers. Avoid prints or patterns These are never appropriate. Choose solid metallic fabrics. Don’t look like a bridesmaid You are the mother not the bridesmaid. Avoid too short, too revealing or body conscience fitting dresses. b

{SIPS ‘N TIPS}

Quest for the

Perfect Summer Martini “Quest” - “ journey towards a goal “ is how Wikipedia defines this word. It’s often used in folklore when the hero overcomes great obstacles, usually while travelling, to reach the goal.

Sweet is for Pina Coladas and Chi Chis (not my favourite I must add). When the Crantini craze erupted several years ago, they were fun, colourful, trendy and slipped down way too easily.

I enjoy a good martini. I’ve learned not to order one from mainstream restaurants and bars. They are invariably bad and boring, consisting of watered down bar gin, too much vermouth and olives from a jar that’s been open too long and seen better days.

Don’t cheap out on the olives. For a classic gin/vermouth martini that calls for olives, use decent big olives. Little, squishy things do nothing for either the appearance or taste of this drink.

GOOD GIN

A martini must start off with damn good gin. There are many new fabulous gins on the market so one does not have to resort to regular bar gins. Three of my favourites are The Botanist, Gin Mare, and Victoria Gin. Secondly, a martini should always be served in an elegant glass. The classic Y shaped glass, long stem and bowl large enough to safely hold a decent 5 or 6 oz drink is perfect. Martinis shouldn’t be sweet.

I like to experiment, and each summer I seek out a new martini recipe to try. So, on a trip to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, a friend of mine said that if we had the chance, drive out to Le Kliff, a restaurant in Mismaloya and order their Basil Martini. I had to go. Basil Martini? A restaurant called Le Kliff? Mismaloya? My curiosity and sense of adventure were definitely peaked. After a long day’s drive back from a visit to Tequila City (that’s another article!) we had a few hours left on our rental car, it was a glorious evening, blue skies, sun still high in the sky so we decided to set off on our quest.

10 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

The road from Puerto Vallarta to Mismaloya winds along the coast. Stunning sea views, gleaming white high rise condos, enchanting villas and jungle compete for space along the narrow, winding road. Driving south each curve toward the sea along the cliffs we are blinded as the brilliant sun stabs us in the eyes through the dense foliage. We have no idea where Le Kliff is, so as navigator, my eyes are peeled for a sign. Suddenly, the entrance appears and we veer off into the crowded, cobblestone parking lot and screech to a halt. Boy, do I need a good martini. We stroll up a path lined with potted herbs to the reception desk. A huge bamboo thatched roof structure provides much needed shade, but the setting sun is now at eye level blinding us at first. When our eyes become accustomed to the brightness, we are greeted by an attractive lady. NO TABLES

‘We would like to have a drink please.” states Grant. “I’m sorry sir, but we are full tonight”. She replied. “No tables”. “What?” I cried, my expression of shock and disappointment written all over my face. “ Is there no where we can sit and have a drink?” “We drove here especially on the recommendation of a friend from Canada who told us we HAD to come here and have a Basil Martini!” The receptionist called over the manager speaking in rapid Spanish. She signalled for us to wait “un momento por favor”. After about five minutes, we were shown to a table near the railing where I had been standing admiring the sea view . The waiter explained that the restaurant was indeed full, but the manager did not want to disappoint us by turning us away without trying their famous martini.

ALISON’S VERSION OF THE PERFECT SUMMER MARTINI ( BASIL MARTINI) • 2 oz of Premium Gin ( My favourite is The Botanist by Bruichladdich) • 2 oz of Orange Juice • 1 oz Cointreau • 4-6 large Basil leaves • Ice Place all ingredients into a blender. Blend on high until a slushy consistency is reached. Pour into a perfect martini glass. Enjoy. We were most grateful and very thirsty. Grant ordered a Margarita, that appeared in a glass like a fish bowl . My Basil martini arrived in a large, perfect glass with a long stem. The waiter set it down on the table and I stared at it. The liquid was translucent, a magical shade of bright, fresh green as the setting sun shone through it. I lifted it to my lips using two hands so as not to spill a drop. The fragrant, fresh basil aroma greeted me first. Then, the cool, slightly slushy pale green elixir filled my mouth and slipped effortlessly down my parched throat. Aaaah! Wow! I glanced at Grant with huge eyes and an equally huge grin. THIS IS IT!

The perfect summer martini! I sighed, relaxed back in my chair, took another long sip and watched the sun setting slowly into the Pacific. Heaven. We left a nice big tip. b Alison Phillips is the co-owner of Aligra Wine & Spirits in West Edmonton Mall. She is ISG Level II Certified and a French Wine Scholar. THINK PINK! ALISON’S WINE PICKS {JUNE 2015} Summer Demands Rose Wine! It’s perfect – on its own, or with light, salad type meals, it’s a wine that goes with everything. From dry styles from France, to sweeter offerings from Spain, Australia and Canada, there’s bound to be a pink wine that pleases you and your friends. Sante! Mirval Rose, Provence France - $27.99 My new favourite Rose! The 17th-century Miraval estate is located in the Var region of Provence, and was bought by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in 2009 and extensively renovated. With winemaking expertise from Perrin, the first modern vintage was released in 2012, and was met with wide acclaim. A beautifully pale pink colour, with a nose of wild strawberry and stone fruit, with delicate floral touches. Great palate texture, with soft tangerine and peach notes joining layers of berry fruit.

Artuzuri Rose, Artadi, Navarra, Spain $18.99 A long time favourite! The Artazuri is an outstandingly refreshing rosé made from a top Navarra estate, owned by Juan Carlos Lopez De Lacalle, the magus of Artadi in Rioja. The Garnacha grape is naturally exuberant and richly fruity; it has grip, structure and length, which does not come close to some of the confected, almost jammy examples sometimes encountered. . The red fruits here are allied to gentle notes of mandarin, spice and pepper. Dirty Laundry Hush Hush Blush, Summerland, B.C. $27.99 By far one of the best roses from B.C. the Dirty Laundry “Hush” has an exquisite nose of salmonberry and raspberry, followed by an equally impressive palate of fresh, ripe field berries with a lingering, slightly off-dry finish. This wine would be a perfect partner with fresh spinach, strawberry and goat cheese salad, grilled chicken, salmon, or simply as a patio sipper all on it’s own!

Roseline Diffusion Rose , Provence France -$19.99

De Bortoli Emeri Pink Moscato , Australia _$15.99

No summer afternoon is complete without a little bit of the pale pink/orange wines from Provence. These light and crisp roses have just the slightest touches of bright berry flavors and can complement a meal perfectly or be delightful on their own.

Looking for a light and lively bubbly with rose petal aromas and fresh strawberry flavours? This is it! A perfect summer sipper for celebrating any occasion, or not! b Subject to availability at Aligra Wine & Spirits West Edmonton Mall www.aligrawineandspirits.com

How to Change Your Life with

Positive Thinking Living your best life begins with thinking positive. People who think positively tend to be happier, healthier, and more successful. Experts estimate that we have between 60000 to 80000 thoughts that go through our mind per day and about 70-80% of them being negative thinking. These statistics are astounding. You probably do not even recognize that many thoughts going through your mind as they are automatic. What matters most is how much attention and how much importance you give to you’re the negative thoughts. Have you ever noticed how things could be going great for you and you get some negative feedback and it feels like your world got turned upside down? You tend to forget about all the positive feedback you have been given. As you focus on the negative, your mind looks for more evi-

dence to support your current thinking. Imagine what would happen if you took note of the negative feedback and determined if it was useful or not and then let it go. Feedback is one person’s experience or opinion and that is all it is. There is power in positive thinking. Positive thinking allows you to look for the best outcomes and doors of opportunity become available. No matter what is going in your life today, you can improve it by starting to think more positively. Positive thinking can transform relationships, empower others, and lead to creating an amazing life. With positive thinking, you: • Open your mind to the possibilities. You stop slamming the door on opportunities. You start asking yourself, “What is really possible for me?”

••• You stop slamming the door on opportunities. You start asking yourself, “What is really possible for me?” ••• 14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

• Develop more resilience. With every situation, there is a positive side and there is a negative side. When you choose to positively reframe a situation, you can get through the situation knowing that whatever is in your way is only temporary. You can think about strategies and possibilities versus dwelling on how bad a situation is. Dwelling on things does not move a person into action and change their situation. • Feel good. When you feel good, you have more energy and you are much more open to trying new things, making new friends, and eating healthier. You bring more attention to the choices you make. • Attract others to you. Positive people are like magnets. Their positive energy and view of the world is contagious. You cannot help wanting to be near them. People want to be around people who fuel them and also make them feels good.

• Focus on what you want more of. You look for strength and opportunities to learn and grow from situations. As thoughts come up throughout your day, stop and take notice of them and ask yourself, “Is this thought important and does it require my attention?” If not, move on. Start focusing on what you do want to happen in your life and take actions that are in align with those choices. Make today your best day with positive thinking. How to Become an Entrepreneur at

50+

Have you seen those top entrepreneur lists floating around the Internet lately?

it’s just more exciting (read: sexy) for the media to feature young folks instead of us Boomers.

You know the ones I mean: “Top 25 Entrepreneurs Under 25,” or “Top 30 Under 30.” If you didn’t know any better, you’d think that a prerequisite for entrepreneurial success was a very recent graduation from high school.

But those with 15, 20, even 40+ years of work experience are primed and ready to hit the ground running by starting our own businesses. They have the life experience and the professional know-how to succeed where (most) younger entrepreneurs fail.

And with startup superstars like Mark Zuckerberg dominating the online business space, it’s no wonder entrepreneurial-minded Baby Boomers feel they may have missed the boat. But Twitter’s CEO, Dick Costello, is 51 years old. Tim and Nina Zagat, founders of the infamous Zagat Dining Guide, didn’t start their own business until they were both 50-something. And let’s not forget Colonel Sanders, who didn’t start selling Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises until he was 65! While it may seem like 20 and 30-somethings (and let’s be honest – a whole lot of teenagers to boot) are defining entrepreneurship with their youth, the truth is

Here is a simple 3-step process you can follow to get the entrepreneurial ball rolling no matter what age you happen to be: Step One: Determine your talents What brings you joy? What are you really good at? Where do those two things intersect? The answer to those questions tells you which type of business is right for you. Let’s say you’re an expert in Microsoft Excel at your job. You can use that expertise to begin working for yourself as a freelance consultant, eventually transitioning to a full-time entrepreneur.

16 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

Step Two: Find your target market In order to start your own business, you must know who you’re serving. Trying to please all of the people all of the time is sure to result in a bunch of disappointed customers (not to mentioned a very frustrated you). So pick a specific set of folks that you like and want to work with. Determine what their most pressing problem is, and find a way to use your talents (see Step One) to solve that problem. Step Three: Build your online presence The bar to business entry is lower than ever thanks to the advent of online business. Low startup costs and the ability to reach a global audience have also made it easier than ever to become an online entrepreneur. And the best part? You don’t need to be tech-savvy! All of the things you need for an online business – from a website and shopping cart to social media accounts – can be setup and monitored by other people for a very low cost. That’s right – outsourcing is the name of the game in the 21st century, so don’t let the excuse “I don’t know how to do that” hold you back. Becoming an entrepreneur after 50 is not only possible – it’s perhaps the only way to create the lifestyle you’ve been dreaming about long before it’s time to retire. What’s more, if you play your cards right and build a revenue stream around something you really love, retirement will be the last thing on your mind. b Charlie Poznek is a Baby Boomer and online business coach who started his podcast and coaching business in his 50s. Stop DIEting! N.E.A.T. Recipes for LIFE Low-fat, cabbage, high protein, bloodtyping, reduced-calorie diets ... have you ever thought that DIEt really is DIE with a “t” because that’s what it feels like? While from birth we were fed a certain diet, somewhere along the way the word diet became associated with discomfort. Let’s swing to a positive experience by focusing on simple, and delicious recipes that offer life-giving nutrients using real food! One of the main reasons people choose to work with me is so they can have meal plans created for them. There is no death by starvation or due to a miserable lack of flavor; there are health-promoting recipes that aim to be what I call N.E.A.T.: Nutritious – most ingredients should offer outstanding nutrition Easy – usually only require under 30 minutes of preparation time Affordable – majority of items are at a reasonable price point Tasty – there should be a “party in the mouth” when consuming Arugula Salad with Orange Dressing (Makes 2 Servings) • 2 cups arugula •1 to 2 radishes, thinly sliced • 1 organic orange, sectioned • 1/3 cup pumpkin seeds Orange Dressing • 1 orange, zest, and juice • 1 teaspoon raw apple cider vinegar (ACV)

• 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) • 1 small garlic clove • Sea salt to taste • ¼ teaspoon thyme • Black pepper to taste Whisk together zest and juice, Dijon mustard, garlic, thyme, raw apple cider vinegar, EVOO, sea salt, and black pepper in a small bowl. Allow the dressing to marinate for at least 10 minutes before serving. To a salad bowl, add arugula, orange sections, radishes, and pumpkin. Top with the dressing and enjoy! What Makes this Recipe N.E.A.T.? Nutritious: arugula (digestive enzymes, liver support, vitamins / minerals); orange (vitamins); radish (alkaline, liver support, minerals); pumpkin seeds (brain health: minerals, oil); dressing includes garlic (antibacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant); EVOO (brain health); ACV (liver support, boost metabolism) Easy: takes minutes to prepare. Let the dressing marinate while gathering ingredients for salad. Affordable: work within the season for the freshest food with the best price point. This recipe showcases spring / summer foods like arugula and radishes that are more affordable (and nutritious!) than during the winter season. Tasty: I think you’ll find this recipe enjoyable to eat.

I was having tea with a woman just turning 50, who recently confessed that she had cast her line in the online dating pool. She wasn’t having much luck. “I just hate this online dating, but what choice do I have?” she said. Her tale of woe sounded familiar – guys not responding to her messages, guys corresponding briefly - but then nothing, no one offering to meet for coffee, or no call backs after a nice coffee date. I feel her pain because I’ve had similar experiences at 65! The big difference between us, aside from our age is that I’m enjoying the online dating process and am having some fun and some success. Tip #1: Start with a positive mindset. Your attitude and your beliefs as you approach online dating will have a bearing on success or failure. If you’re desperate or angry, then it won’t be fun. Somehow, anger and desperation vibes broadcast

from you – even over the Ethernet! If you believe that all the good men are married or dead, you might attract only “losers”. If you believe that online dating is too demeaning – “I shouldn’t have to do this to find a partner!” well, welcome to the new world. I, too, resisted at first. But when I looked at my professional and personal circle, there were few eligible men. Finding them is a daunting task without some technological help – unless you’re willing to fork over big bucks to a talented matchmaker! So first off, decide that you deserve and are worthy of finding a great mate. Once you have your list of why you’re a great catch (you do have a list, don’t you?!), then make a list of the kind of guy and the lifestyle you’re looking for. Tip #2: Pick your dating site carefully. Not all dating sites are created equal. Most of them charge a fee.

You can scan all the sites for free, but if you find someone to connect with, you’ll have to pay a fee to correspond. I’ve tried “Ourtime.com” for the 50+ set. It was o.k. My favorite and most successful site has been Plenty of Fish. First of all, it’s free. Yes, you pay to upgrade, but I chose to stick with the basic and have found plenty of nice men. (I’m also partial to this site because it’s Canadian!) If you’re new to online dating, read their articles about scams and safety measures. Showcase what’s wonderful about you in your profile. Include a great picture. Tip #3: Be Patient and Have Fun! Decide to adopt a laisses-fair attitude as you cast your line – some will like you, some won’t, so what? Next! A few will nibble, some will take your bait (if you wiggle a little!), a few you’ll catch and release, and once in a while, you’ll land a big one. The beauty of online dating is that you can find out stuff without ever having to meet anyone face-to-face. It’s a sorting process. First you check their profiles and pictures. Then send a note to the ones who appeal to you. Writing back and forth will lay some groundwork for a phone call. Compare your written conversation with a phone call to determine that they’re congruent. One fellow I met online was engaging, but a phone conversation proved that he wasn’t ready to meet anyone face-to-face – fair enough. Next. If still interested, a coffee date is the next step. All good guys will want you to pick a public place that you’re comfortable with that will ensure your safety. Whether your coffee date goes further or not, you’ve practiced conversing skills, met a new person, and have heard some interesting stories.

In the past four months, I’ve had seven coffee dates and will soon have my first “real” date. Best of all, I’m having lots of fun looking for my next “Mr. Right”! Anne sharing her story at the MoMonday’s event in Toronto.

Anne Miner

What are you looking forward to doing/creating in this next half of your life?

In the next half of my life, I will create an institution to train and develop exceptional women leaders - women who can step confidently into leadership positions, in all aspects of life. In the 1970’s we were fighting for equal pay for equal work, and equal opportunities in the workplace. Since then, women have advanced to about half of the workforce and more than half of the University Graduates in this country but, we are still not occupying half of the leadership positions in government, corporations or the media. It is time for women to stop holding ourselves back! How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? I am the eldest of six children. My father was an entrepreneur and my mother stayed at home. At the age of 49, my father contracted Hepatitis C from a blood transfusion, during emergency surgery, and he was never well enough to work again. Initially, I supported the family as five of my siblings were still living at home but, I did not have the earning power to replace my father’s income. 22 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

employees, their funders/shareholders, the media and the general public all of whom may contribute to the leader’s success in achieving their vision. Leaders must have the ability to capture imagination and confidence in order to inspire others to want to follow and achieve the leader’s vision. Anne signing her book at the Women of Courage Event.

When I asked for help, everyone got a job – doing whatever they could do - shoveling snow, delivering papers, baby sitting, pumping gas – so we could meet the household expenses. This experience showed me that by working together, a collaborative, cooperative team can overcome challenges and hardship more quickly, and with much less stress, than if one person does it alone. What is your vision of great leadership?

What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? Every smiling face is beautiful. When you smile at others, they will respond to you more positively – you will be more likeable and perceived to be more trustworthy. When you look in the mirror, remember to smile at yourself, it will build your confidence! How have business and/or personal relationships shaped your life?

I believe that great leadership brings out the best in everyone. Great leaders share their vision and inspire their tribe to work together to make the vision a reality – whether that is meeting household expenses, building a business or raising money for a charitable foundation. Great leaders inspire and encourage others to bring the best of their talents and abilities to bear and then get out of the way and let them do what needs to be done.

There were five women who shaped me: my mother, my grandmother, my mother-in-law, my only female boss and my first female sponsor. Each of these women had a significant impact on my self-image, self-esteem and self-confidence. My mother taught me to show up early, dress the part and have your facts in order. My grandmother taught me to stand up straight and speak distinctly and always speak the truth as you know it. My mother-in-law taught me the value If you were to share one thing that of the committee of sleep (John Steinmade a difference in your life, what beck). My first female boss taught me would it be? what not to do. My first female sponsor One thing that has made a difference in taught me how much more quickly and my life is learning to speak confidently and easily you can achieve your goals with engagingly in public. Leaders speak to many the power of a champion behind you. b stakeholder groups including their

Pam Robertson (mother of bride) and Fabulous@50 Diamond Member and her daughter Jenn celebrate a winter wedding.

Letting go gracefully Just because the bride is the star on her wedding day does not mean that the mother of the bride (or groom) must look dowdy and frumpy. Although the mother of the bride can look stunning and wear something that reflects her own sense of style, there are a few tips that should be considered when choosing a special outfit for her daughter’s important day. First of all, talk to the bride. Does she want your ensemble to be the same color as her bridesmaids or does she have colours she wants you to avoid? Regardless it is important to wear something that compliments, not clashes with the wedding party’s attire. In the past it was thought to be inappropriate to wear black ( mourning) or red (too Debbie Jackman Fab@50 member with her son, Brian. Dress purflashy) although the trends are changing. Talk to chased at Melanie Lyn. the bride and get her feedback. 30 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I June • 2015

A mother holds her child’s hand for just a short time, but their heart forever.

It is the bride’s day so you don’t want to upstage her. There are many options ranging from sheath dresses to gowns depending on how formal the wedding will be. If your daughter chooses something that you truly aren’t comfortable in, talk to her. Explain that you want to be supportive but comfortable and confident as well. It is also a good idea to talk to the mother of the groom. Although you don’t need to match, it is important not to clash. If you get along well you may want to shop together. If this is not the case, be sure to keep the bride in the loop. Don’t forget the logistics. A ball gown will not work well if it is a destination wedding on the beach just as a strappy sundress would not look right in a formal setting.
