As we bid farewell to another summer, I find myself thinking about the struggle many of us face in the balance between work and play. I wonder if it’s a gender thing…that innate instinct to nurture that compels us to always do the responsible first, before we’re allowed to cut loose and have some much-deserved fun. Most of us realize that we’re typically our own worst enemy…that the lion’s share of any criticism we may feel in how we choose to spend our time originates from within ourselves. When it comes to the balance between work and play, it’s a slippery slope. Too much work means quality family time can suffer, while stress levels tend to elevate. Too much play can leave you feeling guilty that you’re not being “productive enough”, and that overwhelming pile of work waiting for you upon your return almost seems like some cosmic message saying, “See? This is your punishment for not being here.” And yet, I think of that narrative the stewardess gives on the plane: the one that says, “if the oxygen masks drops down, you need to put on your own first, then help those who need it”. Translation: You’re of no use to anyone else if you haven’t properly cared for yourself.

our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman!
Dianna Bowes and Mariana Konsolos finding their balance on a recent vacation to Uruguay, SA.
I’ve recently returned from an amazing trip to South America. It was magical, filled with adventure and had absolutely nothing to do with my work. And yet, while mentioning the trip to a friend, I found myself adding, “I had several opportunities to speak while I was there, so I did work…sort of.” Of course, if you’re one of the lucky people who love your work, the line blurs even more. The truth is, drawing a clear-cut line in the sand between work and play is vital for our mental and emotional survival. Not to mention the fact that every one of us deserves the time to engage in some justifiable, self-deserved downtime. Did you know that mental health breaks increase productivity, replenish attention, solidify memories and increase creativity? Play is not just a vacation, an indulgence or a vice…it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body. When our mind has the downtime to reflect, it dips into our memories, sensory experiences, disappointments and desires so that we may learn, grow and gain a clearer understanding of the direction we’d like our lives to take in the future. So, I say yes to play…with no guilty strings attached. And you know what? You should as well. Relish every decadent minute of it…for if not now, when? a Fabulously yours,
DiannaBowes
EDITOR/CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around Edmonton and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the 40 plus woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer woman. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! www.fabulousat50.com

CLEAN
Living ... less drama ...more balance ... and BIG Happiness
Fall is here…finding balance with work and play is a great way to celebrate summer, fall forward and, prepare for winter. Looking for some ways to reduce the drama and have more balance on the scales of work and play? The key is what I call CLEAN living. Clean living helps reduce the drama (and stress) in relationships, communication and day to day living. Often it is not a situation that throws our balance off; it is the drama associated with a situation that increases stress. Think of your life as a pie with 24 slices, each slice representing an hour of time. When things are going well, finding a sense of harmony in the “slices” of life can be pretty workable. Now, take that same pie of life, and toss in some family drama, gossip, some complainers at work who are taking coffee break to a whole new level of wasted time, people showing up late or breaking commitments, and, you saying YES when you should have said NO. These are the sorts of situations that cause us to doubt ourselves, lose sleep and toss our healthy coping skills out the window. Can you relate to this? We all probably can. We’ve probably all been there a time or two before… and may well be there again. a
The great news is that there are some simple strategies to live CLEAN
.

Dressing
for Your Body
Type
Most women realize that choosing clothes that are flattering to their body type is the best way to look and feel great.
Dark colors slim, while light colors tend to expand; and bright colors draw attention.
Bring Out Your Assets
For example, if you have a pear-shaped body, with wide hips and a narrow top, try using dark-colored bottoms with a light top to balance things out. A bright scarf will draw attention away from the wider hips.
No matter how many flaws you think you have, you also have assets. The best way to look great and balance your body type is to downplay your body flaws and accentuate your assets. For example, if you have great legs, but are a little heavy in the tummy, opt for a slender skirt above the knee to show off your nice legs. If you have a small waist but fuller hips, wear an A-line skirt that accentuates your waist and skims over the hips. Decide what you like about your body and draw attention to it. Use Color to Balance Your Body A little color goes a long way toward creating balance for your body type.
8 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2014
Use this to your advantage.
This color principle will help you choose clothing to create a balanced look.
Find Flattering Cuts Look for clothing shapes that will enhance and balance your body type. A small waist and hips look great with tapered pant legs, while a large bottom can be slimmed by choosing a flared skirt or boot cut pants. Likewise, a crisscross or ruffled top will enhance a small chest by adding more bulk, while a plain shirt with only darts will look great on a larger chest. Peasant shirts, which are more flowing, flatter a smaller torso and bust while fitted tops look better on larger women. Use Accessories to Your Advantage Accessories can be your best friend. Not only do they help distract from areas you do not want people noticing, they can really add flair to your wardrobe and help you make your clothes look better on you. For example, if you are quite tall and want
to look a little shorter, a wide belt can help create that illusion by providing a “cutting” line at your waist, which stops the eye. When the eye can move the length of the body without interruption, this creates the illusion of length, so it stands to reason that a belt that creates an interruption would cause the body to appear shorter. Knowing how to choose clothes that balance your body type will result in a boost in confidence. You will end up wearing outfits that look excellent on your body and leave you feeling great. a Visit www.ShirleyBorrelli.com/events for more information on upcoming workshops to dress for your body type. Three Hormone Facts You Need To Know When you think of hormones, you think of the bad guys responsible for your hot flashes! But did you know your hormones do great things for your body when they are properly balanced? As we age our sex hormones are in a constant state of decline from our mid 20’s. This appears to be an inevitable part of aging that has been accepted as a certainty until recent shifts. Indeed, we are often encouraged to ‘age gracefully’ which I interpret as being told to put a smile on your face as your quality of life declines with your hormones. Many of us have seen a decline in our parent’s functional ability that we would like to avoid or delay as long as possible. My intent with bio-identical hormone therapy is to improve and preserve our quality of life right up to the end. I will share with you 3 seldom discussed hormone facts and let you draw your own conclusions. 10 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2014
Hormones are Nature’s Anti-inflammatories Our sex hormones peak at age 25 to 30 and so does our energy, vitality, zest and physical strength. Research suggests these 2 observations are causally related, and experience with hormone replacement therapy gives me regular reminders of this. Countless women and men in the last 7 years have thanked me for ‘giving me my life back’ or’ turning back the clock 10 years’. Science has shown us that estrogen and testosterone bind directly to our cell’s DNA and reduce production of inflammatory agents. Roughly 90% of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and Alzheimer’s disease are now thought to have increased inflammation as part of the initial cause of the disease.
Vitamin D and Cancer Vitamin D is now more properly thought of as a hormone than a vitamin, due to its powerful effects throughout the body. Vitamin D is produced by exposure of the skin to sunlight. A mild, whole body redness produces 10,000 units of Vitamin D. A multitude of studies have directly related low Vitamin D to an increased risk of many forms of cancer, other than skin cancer. This is a real problem at our latitude, especially when combined with a fear of skin cancer and photo-aging which are directly related to sun exposure. Recent evidence suggests a Vitamin D level of 120 mmol/l is optimal level to reduce cancer risk. All Edmontonian’s should take 2000 units of Vitamin D a day and then have a blood test to check the level. An extra 1000 units per day will raise the level 20 mmol/l. It’s not hard to do the math when you get your level on 2000 units per day. Would you not rather prevent cancer than have to take a shot at ‘curing’ it? Testosterone Reduces Breast and Prostate Cancer Risk Recent evidence has started to convincingly reverse the relationship of testosterone to prostate cancer. Low testosterone in men has been found to be a strong risk factor for the development of prostate cancer as well as heart disease. Several recent scientific studies have shown the addition of testosterone to HRT reduces the risk of breast cancer. At the present time there is no pharmaceutical testosterone preparation made for women. Compounded testosterone added to estrogen is able to restore blood levels and well-being. Functional and regenerative medicine is rapidly moving individual health care towards a pro-active, preventative approach. The center of this approach is recognition of each person’s individuality with respect to symptoms, family history and agent dosage. I believe the pendulum is swinging away from the disease treatment approach that has served us well to this point, and towards a personalized, preventative approach that focuses on improved quality of life. a Dr. Ron Brown M.D. FRCS(C): Dr. Ron Brown, Executive Medical Director leading the team at True Balance, graduated with a fellowship in family Practice from the University of Alberta and worked 8 years in his rural family practice. Kathy Anders and Jenna Gauthier, Edmonton Kathy Anders is a human whirlwind. She is a managing partner of an insurance company, a member of three boards of directors (one business and two nonprofits), a mother of two adult children, and an active volunteer with Special Olympics and other charities. She frequently “voluntells” daughter Jenna, age 27, to join her in these pursuits, and Jenna takes it in stride, her infectious grin showing it’s just fine with her. Jenna is just as active as her mother. She is an occupational therapist at the Centre for Autism, has a boyfriend, participates in a variety of sports (soccer, floor hockey, baseball, volleyball), coaches soccer, volunteers with Homeless Connect, and raises funds for Special Olympics bowling among other things. Kathy joined Fabulous@50 because she sees it as a great opportunity to connect with women over 50. “Most women our age grow more confident. We become risk takers, adventurers, rain makers who can seed change. We make a difference. We know what we want and we go out and get it,” she says. “In my view, life begins at 50!” Kathy Anders - necklace and clothing from Bellissima - boots from Town Shoes. Shauna McCaffery and Latisha Steele, Beaumont Shaun, age 58, is overwhelmed, trying to find time for herself in a demanding, exhausting schedule. She operates two businesses – a catering company and a bowling alley – has land that requires constant attention and is caregiver for her frail 89 year old mother. She has no time for leisure pursuits and not as much time as she’d like for daughter Latisha who was born when Shaun was 40. That’s one reason she signed up for the mother-daughter photo shoot and joined Fabulous@50. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve done something just for me.” Latisha, age 18, graduated from Grade 12 this June and is hoping for a career in interior design. She enjoys camping and the arts – reading and playing the piano. Her reason for participating in the photo shoot? “Because I love my mom.”

Bonnie Powers and Tamena Powers, Sherwood Park Bonnie Powers, age 58, is a new member of Fab@50: a mother of three adult children and grandmother of seven, she operates two businesses in Sherwood Park in partnership with her daughter Tamena. Bonnie fits it all in with aplomb, but it wasn’t always this way. “I used to do what I as good at, not what I was passionate about,” says Bonnie. Now she does both – operating a business accounting firm and a consulting firm geared at building strong families, particularly through the children’s connection with their mother. Its slogan is Shape, Shift and Shine reflecting the energy, thoughts and brilliance that can shine through when attitudes change and barriers are removed. Tamena, age 41, juggles several careers too – as a hair stylist, in marketing and as partner in mom’s businesses. She has three active children, ages 7, 11 and 24. “Doing this photo shoot fits our passion,” she says and then adds impishly. “Don’t forget to say we’re both single!” Tamena Powers - dress and bracelets from jmichaels - boots from Town Shoes. Lisa and Tia McNiven, Sherwood Park Not only is Lisa McNiven new to Fabulous@50, she’s new to Alberta. A single mom, she and her two children, ages 8 and 13, moved here from Nova Scotia in June so Lisa could join a new practice as a naturopathic doctor. She is also Edmonton representative for a health products company. “I started my career as a nurse,” she says. “but alternative medicine was more attractive – it promotes health, rather than just maintaining it.” Lisa and her kids live life to the full: they’ve enjoyed camping and hiking in the mountains and other activities since they arrived. Lisa also cycles and hits the gym on a regular basis. Tia on the other hand is more of an arts buff. A talented singer and actor, she performed the starring role of Clara in her school’s production of Nutcracker Suite, has performed in musical theatre and auditioned for Next Star. She enters Grade 8 this fall and is also enrolled in jazz ballet. She agreed to the photo shoot because “I love to dress up – it looked like fun.” Southgate invites you to experience a fashion service exclusive. {LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}
The
real reason you can’t find life balance
Life balance is pretty elusive. Everyone is searching for more balance in their lives, yet no one seems to be able to find it. We have never-ending to-do lists and our days are filled with work and family commitments. If we could only find a better system of organization or time management or a handy app that would solve the problem, we believe we will have greater balance. Except that’s simply not true. The reason you don’t have as much balance as you would like has nothing to do with how you organize your time or the number of commitments you have. This is the real reason that you can’t find life balance: You are trying to balance the wrong things. First, ditch the idea of work-life balance. The thought that we can balance work and life is silly from the outset. Work, although it often takes up a significant number of hours, is only one aspect of life. Trying to balance work with family, health, 18 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2014
recreation and so on is an impossible task. It’s inherently unbalanced from the getgo. Hold your hands out. Now imagine work is in your right hand and everything else is in your left hand. You can feel that the weight of your left hand is greater. Instead of thinking about work and life, consider balancing of all the aspects of your life where work is simply one piece of the pie. That’s the first step in having greater balance but not the essential one. More importantly, stop trying to balance the tasks in your life. It’s a no-win situation. There is always something else to do. We all have a perpetual to-do list than just rolls forward to the next day. Some people even have lists to organize their lists. We excel at doing. Given that we usually have way more on our list than is reasonable in a day, it’s no wonder we are always playing catch-up. Our sense of imbalance comes from constant busyness that isn’t always grounded in purpose or meaning.
We move from one task to the next without any pause that allows for conscious choice and intention. We take on commitments for all the wrong reasons. We say yes when we really want to say no. The truth is you will never get a handle on your to-do list without a healthy dose of reflection and awareness. I call that the being side of life. But most people think they are just too busy for something as seemingly frivolous as quiet reflection. A recent study suggested that the majority of people would rather have a mild electrical shock than engage in personal reflection. That’s probably why so many people feel that life balance is out of reach. It’s in this being space that we can remember and reconnect with what is truly important. It allows us to be present to what is happening in the moment rather than constantly functioning on auto-pilot.
When we do that we create purposeful doing. We are more conscious of the choices we are making with our time and energy. Begin balancing the amount of doing in your life with a little more being. Sit quietly for a few minutes and breathe. Give your mind a rest from planning and problem solving. Tune in to your inner wisdom. Go for a walk. Try meditation. Have a cup of tea without having to figure anything out. Slow down and take advantage of the natural pauses in the day. You just might find that a little less doing and a little more being creates a whole lot more balance. a Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women find more balance, fun and satisfaction no matter what phase of life they are in. The
POWER of
Bell Laughter: Zandra (& Shirley Best) on Humor and Workplace Stress
She’s been described as “face-hurting funny” and “the Liberace of comedians.” But Zandra Bell is much more than that. The irreverent and witty 50-something is quick to spurn the label of stand-up comic. In making people laugh, whether on the stage, in the boardroom, or wherever she happens to run into your funny bone, her mission is to inspire change in others. It’s comedy with a purpose. “So much worry is just wasted energy,” says the self-created Motivational Humorist, who will be entertaining guests, once again, during the popular Fabulous at 50 Experience trade show, at the River Cree Casino and Resort in November. Years ago, when Bell was looking for a change, herself - no longer content with her status quo - she took a step back, objectively surveyed her many skill sets and talents, then courageously carved out a niche in the corporate world uniquely suited to her. 20 • Be Fabulous! Zandra Bell aka Shirley Best
•••
“Shirley’s like your mother times 10 or your next-door neighbour or your favourite aunt. ••• She’d been working 13 years for the federal government, as a bilingual passport officer then a regional office director, but wanted something more to feed her mind, body and spirit. Bell was passionate about her new-found flair for acting, which she’d stumbled upon shortly after coming to Edmonton, while participating in a few Murder Mystery nights to make some friends in a new city. Gift of Humour “I found I had a gift for humour,” says Bell. When in character, she discovered, a whole new world of hilarity opened up to her. People responded. This led to debuts in the Fringe and Street Performer festivals; soon she became a regular. But Bell had no illusions: she loved her lifestyle, and shopping, way too much, to give it all up and become a starving artist. So she struck a deal with her alter ego. That’s when Shirley Best stepped in; her campy, 60-something lovable show character became the tour-de-force in Bell’s unique brand of corporate customized comedy. Sporting a leopard hat, horn-
rimmed glasses and a loud fashion blazer festooned in colourful fruit and flowers, Shirley won people over by “telling it like it is.” “Shirley’s like your mother times 10 or your next-door neighbour or your favourite aunt. She can get away with cutting to the bone of issues in the workplace and she brings out the realness in people because she’s so down-to-earth and real herself,” says Bell, who is well-known today on the corporate conference scene. Her gigs include management meetings, keynotes at awards banquets, conventions, annual conferences and symposiums. But before she hits the stage, Bell spends considerable time doing research to fully grasp the dynamics of her clients’ industry, corporate culture and philosophies - from waste management to workplace safety - so she can more effectively reach her audience. “What I create is a one-woman show just for you. I get everyone laughing and it’s a morale booster; employees are laughing at things they know to be true about their business, the frustrations and challenges Celebrating the baby boomer woman • 21
they face on the job; they laugh at themselves, their spouses, their workmates and supervisors, and it becomes cathartic and a real team-building experience,” says Bell, whose client list includes corporate giants like Husky Oil, DOW Chemical, Scotia Bank, CUPE, Shell Canada and Canada Safeway. Bell says the emotional release and stress-reducing benefits of a good laugh are well-documented. Laughing reduces stress, lowers blood pressure and boosts the immune system. Given that billions of dollars are lost every year by Canadian businesses due to stress-related disorders, her antidote of custom humour is a small price to pay for an uplifted workforce. “Laughter is a very healing and unifying force. It can resolve workplace stress, raise morale and productivity,” says Bell. “You need to be able to stand back and laugh at yourself. So I get them all laughing, and this cuts right through, from management to the mail guy.”

Bell adds that often people feel stuck in their jobs, unable to change the situations that leave them dissatisfied, stressed or unhappy. Endolphins But once she gets them laughing and those “happy little endolphins (are) swimming around in their brains” anything becomes possible. “I help them to change their attitude about things. We can’t always control what’s out there but we can shift the way we look at things, and that can make all the difference,” says Bell. And as dear, old Shirley Best likes to remind folks: “It’s like putting on a pair of control-top pantyhose when you’re still wet after a shower. That can do you in; when you can accomplish that, you can do anything at work.” a Jennifer Parks is a freelance writer based in Edmonton.

fabulous @ any age Aging is a natural part of life which we all want to do gracefully but as time goes by, we start to notice changes. Our cells aren’t renewing themselves as quick as they used to and the fine lines begin to appear. That means you have less collagen and hyaluronic acid to support and fill out the layers of your skin. Our environment, pollution, sun exposure, stress and smoking can increase this effect. Over time, this combination of factors contributes to the three D’s of aging: Deterioration – fine lines, wrinkles, texture change Descent – droopiness or sagging skin Deflation – loss of fullness or volume

Keep Your Cells Healthy Like a Baby’s Cells
5 Ways to Stay
Young and Fabulous Every day in your body 432 billion cells die and are replaced with new cells. This is the key to regenerating your body and staying young. Because of this you could have a better functioning body next year if you want, skinnier, with less pains and more energy ….if you take the right steps. That 432 billion number is a just a scientific guess by the way. Cells are so small and there are so many in your body (somewhere between 60 -100 trillion) that no one could ever count them individually. This is also why you don’t notice your body renewing itself all the time….but it is. Examples of a New Body: • Cells in our digestive system, from the stomach to the large bowel are replaced every 5 minutes. • The liver is replaced every five months. • A new covering of skin happens every four weeks. • Our heart is replaced every six to nine months. • Your liver is capable of renewing and repairing from as little as 25% of its tissue. Regeneration is all in the Balance! We know that we will be getting a new body; the question is whether our new body will be a healthier or an unhealthy one? 26 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2014
The quality of the new cells is dependant on the raw material and environment, on the balance of food and energy when the replacement cells were being formed. If you balance these factors properly we call this regeneration. If you feed the body poorly; the result will be cells of an inferior quality this is degeneration. The Big 5 Regenerators (Good Guys): 1. Fresh Vegetables – filled with vitamins & minerals, good source of phytochemicals that protect the body from disease & aging. Eat LOTS. They are the heavy weights in regeneration. 2. Fresh Fruit - filled with vitamins & minerals, good source of phytochemicals that protect the body. 3. Whole Grains (Brown Rice, oats, buckwheat, barley, millet, quinoa) – great source of vitamins, minerals, some protein & of good fibre. 4. Drink lots of pure water - needed for digestion, circulation of body fluids & joint lubrication. 5. Sleep –Not getting enough sleep may increase the risk of high blood pressure & heart disease. As you body starts functioning on a healthier basis you might naturally tend to slow down on those things that can interfere with the balance of the body. Your body can better handle the imbalance.
The Big 5 Degenerators (Bad Guys): 1. Processed Foods -dead food with calories but almost no nutrients! – fills your liver and body with chemicals. 2. Sugar – depresses the immune system, overworks the digestive system and pancreas, and is full of calories. It’s also highly addictive (as many of us know). 3. Alcohol – toxic to the liver, depletes B Vitamins, depresses the nervous system, and inhibits the bone marrows job of regenerating blood cells. You can have fun and be silly without it. Again most of us know this. 4. Caffeine (highly addictive) – puts stress on the adrenal glands, negatively affects the nervous system, as a diuretic depleting calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous, increases blood pressure. 5. Rancid Fats and Oils (deep fried foods, baked goods) – create free radicals which injure cell membranes, enzymes and DNA. Stresses the digestive system and liver. Raises blood cholesterol. More calories. You might notice that the big 5 actually cost a lot less than the degenerators and some are entirely free. The nice thing about regeneration is that you don’t have to think about what your body is doing. All you have to do is set up the proper conditions and your body will take care of everything else. A healthy body has the ability to heal itself of all (or almost all) problems if properly nourished. Diana Herrington, now living in Northern Canada, turned a debilitating health crisis into a passion for helping others with healthy, sugar free, gluten free, eating and cooking. After testing and researching every possible healthy therapy on her delicate system she has developed simple powerful principles which she shares in her recent book Eating Green, Clean and Lean, and as a writer for Care2: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/foodrecipes and hosts Care2 groups: Healthy Living Network and Healthy Cooking. prevent collagen damage and pre-mature aging. When choosing your sun protection look for an SPF with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide, which are two minerals that have the highest ratings in sun protection. Products that contain chemical sunscreens can leave your skin looking dull and may increase sensitivities. Always use protection. Water & Vitamins Drinking up to 8 glasses of fluids daily, especially water, will help keep you and your skin hydrated and healthy looking. Combining that with an Omega 3 to help the moisture balance in your skin and a Multi Vitamin enriched with Vitamin A, E, C and B will enhance you skin’s appearance and overall health. True beauty begins on the inside. Vitamin C Correct and prevent environmental damage by neutralizing free radicals and stimulating Collagen production. After just one use, your skin will have improved tone and texture. Use it once or twice daily with your favourite moisturizer to take your skin to the next level. It’s important to use medical grade oil-free products such as Vivier Pharma for best results.
Skin Regimen Daily cleanser, toner, and moisturizer can help to train your skin to function normally. Remember to avoid scrubbing aggressively with wash cloths and loofas as you can damage your skin, leave it dry, and cause skin to look dull and become sensitive. A good skin care routine is an easy habit to form and you will see results for years to come. Chemical Peel Many skin conditions will see softer, smoother, more glowing and radiant skin after a chemical peel. You will increase your collagen production for firmer, more youthful skin. Peels require approximately 1-5 days downtime depending on the strength of the peel until the peeling and flaking is finished, uncovering your newly refreshed skin. IPL – Intense Pulse Light Reduce the appearance of brown spots and sun damage for a brighter complexion with IPL. IPL works by increasing the production of collagen in your skin to lift and tighten and return your youthful appearance. There is minimal discomfort, and no downtime.

1. Combine cranberries, 1 cup sugar, water and ginger in a medium nonreactive saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. 2. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, stirring occasionally, until cranberries pop and mixture thickens, about 8 - 10 minutes. Remove from heat; remove and discard ginger. 3. Transfer cranberry mixture to a bowl and cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. Refrigerate until cold. Meanwhile, to prepare pastry cream, cut vanilla bean in half lengthwise and scrape beans from pod; discard pod. 4. Place beans and egg yolks in a stand mixer fitted with a wire whip.

How to Be Balanced, Not Bankrupt© Remember our level of energy when we were kids? We’d play to the brink of flat-out exhaustion, and then flop down like puppies to rest. Five minutes later, we were off again! On the opposite end, if we vegged in front of the TV for too long, (I was usually curled up with a good book) our bodies would start to protest, prompting us to get active. Our parents watched for the effects of too much excitement, too much candy, or even too much fun and dragged us, sometimes kicking and screaming, off to bed.
Of course when we’re younger, it seems easy to recover and get back in balance when we’ve pushed too far. Our bodies do a marvelous job of repair and recovery – for a while. Over time though, an excess of out go and a shortage of input results in some kind of break down – that’s when dis-ease starts. Barometers When I turned 50, that 27 year old inside me was positive I could take on more and not face any repercussions. After all, I had been living this way all my life! My body disagreed and whispered a complaint or two. When I ignored the whisper, it screamed and finally got my attention. Our bodies are the greatest barometers of our life balance!
When we’re young adults, we still want to do it all and have it all. So we go flat out by adding a juggling act to our balancing act – how many balls can we keep in the air while successfully walking the balance beam of life?
••• Too much of anything “good” or “bad” over a prolonged period of time can lead us to the brink of bankruptcy either emotionally, mentally, physically or spiritually. ••• 36 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2014
Too much of anything “good” or “bad” over a prolonged period of time can lead us to the brink of bankruptcy either emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. The solution is simple, but not necessarily easy. When my body refused to give anymore until I gave it what it needed – rest – it was time to take stock! As I rested, I reflected. What was important to me? Where did it make sense to invest my energy, and what could I let go of? Was it time to let a few balls drop? Perhaps it was better to abandon my tricky balancing act to find a better path. Life Choices Today I pay much closer attention to my current state of being. I’ve discovered that less is more when it comes to life choices. “No or not right now” are consistent pieces of my vocabulary. For example, a friend recently invited me to train with her for a walking marathon that was scheduled a few months later. Her enthusiasm for the goal was enticing, so I was very tempted. But instead of agreeing right away (my usual habit), I said, “Let me think about that.” When I looked at my current reality - the amount of energy I needed for important things already on my plate – I said a reluctant “not right now”. When I am more selective about where I spend my energy, I have more energy for everything I choose to do. In honoring myself, when my body says rest, I rest. When it calls for quiet time, I retreat to a quiet place. When it’s time to get active, I do things that are fun – I dance, I swim, I go for long walks. Nature has a natural ebb and flow. Because we are part of nature, when we honor that same rhythm; our bodies reward us not only with a longer life, but a quality of life that is filled with peace and joy. a As a woman of wisdom, Sue Paulson inspires others to magnificence. Make Your Kitchen Smell Like Fall! It never fails that the tree fruits are ready in the middle of a busy week, but that’s how it goes! As someone who loves to make jams, chutneys, butters, and whatever I can get my hands on for canning, I’ve had to get used to it. Right now the apples are plentiful, and so I am making up some very yummy apple butter. There’s no butter in it, and it is a tasty, healthy way to replace some of the fat that usually goes into recipes like a spice cake, or a family favourite, my Applebutter Rum Cake. Homemade apple butter cannot be beat – and I have tried plenty of commercial versions. While I typically save my apple butter for baking, I know people who love to eat it on toast, alongside their pork roast, or with a breakfast like sausage and eggs. To make enough for about four pint (500ml) jars, or four cakes, you’ll need 15 minutes to prep: • 3 kg (6 lbs plus 2 apples, roughly) of apples – you can use a variety of types of apple • 500 ml (2 Cups) of sweet apple cider (this is the secret ingredient) • 750 ml (3 Cups) granulated sugar • 10 ml (2 teaspoons) ground cinnamon • 2 ml (1/2 teaspoon) ground cloves In a large stainless steel saucepan, combine apples and apple cider. Working over medium heat, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and boil gently, stirring often, until apples are soft (about 30 minutes). Use a potato masher, and mash the apples until they are a uniform texture. You can also do this working small batches through a food mill or food processor, but be careful not to liquefy everything. You should have about 3 litres of apple puree. In a clean, large stainless steel saucepan, combine the apple puree, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and boil 38 • Be Fabulous! I www.fabulousat50.com I Fall • 2014
gently until mixture thickens and holds its shape on a spoon. Timing here depends on how much water is in those apples, and it can take from 20 to 40 minutes. Your butter should be thick, and a very deep colour. Once complete, you can butt the butter through a canning process to preserve it, or wait until the mixture cools, and keep it in the fridge for a couple of weeks, so you can spoon it onto ice cream, yogurt, or oatmeal. For freezing, divide it equally among four freezer bags, remove the air, and freeze for 3-6 months. If you’d like a copy of the Applebutter Rum Cake I refer to here, email me via Pam@LadybirdFiles.com, tell me you saw the recipe in this magazine, and I will send you the Applebutter Rum Cake recipe for free! a Dr. Pam Robertson is a coach, speaker, and instigator. Retire with Money and Options 3 Insights to SEE if you are on the Right Track Winnie Lau Insight #1 The marketplace has done a great job in confusing the meaning of these two words: Savings and Investing. In the book "Financial Ball Game" the author Dwayne Burnell says it perfectly " By not being clear on the difference between savings and investing you will assume that your money is safer than it really is. RRSP is not a true savings vehicle. Investing your money for retirement is a slippery slope and its what my team calls the hope pray wish model.
Insight #2 If you don't know what your relationship to money is, it will be difficult to protect your money, let alone keep it. And Yes there is a good chance that what we tell ourselves out loud is different than what we believe in silence.
Insight #3 Financial programs offered by the banks and government are designed to keep us a slave to them. Just because the majority of the public participate in the programs, doesn't make it secure, safe, or better for our bottom line. The more we take Accountability for our money, the more money we will have.
Let's fast forward beyond retirement, our hope is we are healthy , sharp , and in good company. We also want: • Family and friends to visit because they really want to see us, not because they have to • To be empowered, in control of our money , and provide legacy • Have Peace of mind that our money is sheltered from the marketplace and the government Let’s Avoid: • Becoming a financial and emotional burden to our family • Being worried about money and finding ways to make more money in our ladder years • Making decisions with your money that could potentially risk the loss of it Ask yourself "Am I in a financial environment where I feel empowered, in control , and have liquid access to my money? If not, it's time to take action. Retiring with money and Options is a choice. Once YOU decide that is what you want, the solutions will present itself. So what are the solutions? I'm here to share with you that you don't have to invest to get the results you want, you don't have to work any harder, all you have to do is get curious and discover more about how it's possible. For further details, education, and resources contact Winnie Lau.

Have you tried everything imaginable to overcome hair loss?
Before
If so, then I know exactly what you're going through. There's nothing more frightening than losing hair. And to make matters even worse feeling so helpless and don't know what to do about it. You end up feeling hopeless because you're trying to figure out everything on your own and nothing you do seems to get your hair back. Until recently, the only way to break free from this cycle of thinning hair was to get hair transplants to help you reverse and gain your thick hair back. However the big problem with that option is that it is ridiculously expensive, with many hair transplants costing at least $14,000 to $60,000! On top of that, when the hair transplant is done, there is no guarantee that the other areas of your scalp won't stop receding. You may have resolved the hair thinning at the top of your head, but what happens to the back part of your head in the next few months? (Or the other areas where you've lost hair). Would you go and get another transplant because that's another $15,000 right? This is why I'm excited to be able to share my new combination therapy with you today. It's called Hair Restoration Protocol. Here at RiaMaria Wellness & Beauty we've been helping baby boomers with their hair loss for the last 22 months. We don't perform hair transplants but we use the latest technologies for restoring hair. In my latest Hair Restoration Protocol I reveal how to grow your hair and feel confident again without needing to get hair surgery. So what makes this different to any other hair implants and surgeries? Well the BIG difference is there is very little or no downtime, you don't have to take time off work to grow your hair. With hair transplants, you need 2 weeks off for recovery and so you don't scare any of your colleagues with your bloody cut and scar. Let me show you exactly how Hair Restoration Protocol works. After an appropriate amount of anesthesia is applied to your scalp, you will sit under a dome of cold red and infrared lasers. These lasers get to work and stimulate blood circulation and collagen production on a cellular level. As soon as you're numb, we will use a Collagen Induction Technique wherein we use micro-needles to create semi-punctures on your scalp. Since you will be numb, it will feel like a massage and some of our clients fall asleep. This procedure alone is already enough to encourage a lot more hair growth for you in the next couple weeks. Depending on the state of your health, and sex, we use all-natural serums that also help your hair growth. It may range from using your own body's healing agent similar to stem cells or a Patent-Pending serum that's clinically proven to stimulate hair production. Now what you've just seen so far is just 3 of the 8 therapies I have combined so that your hair can start growing within days. One of them is the most important therapy before we even start working on your scalp. I haven't even scratched the surface of the powerful methods of my Hair Restoration Protocol. On top of this combination therapy you will also: * receive personal care * updates of digital screenshots of your scalp showing you the baby hairs coming out * experience personalized scalp massage that increases blood circulation * a refreshing smoothie if you ask
Experience fuller eyebrows with our cutting-edge Eyebrow Extensions for $67 on your first brow makeover.

After The initial response to our combination therapy has been overwhelming. Here's what my real clients are saying about the Hair Restoration Protocol: Andrea (name changed), a prestigious high school teacher who suffered alopecia for over a decade said:
"It's a miracle. It really is a miracle. I've tried going for acupunctures for years. I've also tried where there was this long needle the doctor would inject in my scalp that was supposed to help with blood circulation, it was painful. I also went for many sessions at this place in the north for laser therapies and I sat there for hours and months. None of them worked. I mean they did, but the results weren't as noticeable as this. Ria, You should really reach out to the media about this."

4 Smart Strategies for Achieving Work Life
Balance The ongoing saga of achieving worklife balance is never ending. You may even wonder if it is even possible. When you are off balance, it affects your productivity at work, your relationships, and your health. Your whole world may seem over turned especially when you have so many other competing demands such as volunteering for a committee, shuttling your kids to and from activities, and doing more with less at work. How much is too much? Work Quality Chaos happens when there is no balance. Emotions start to run high. Stress levels hit an all-time high. People say things they regret in the heat of a single moment. Details and deadlines start to get missed. Complacency sets in. Work quality declines. You may lose sleep or wake up in a panic in the middle of the night. Tasks or routines that once seemed simple to perform may make you anxious or you may lose interest all together leading to burnout. Your heart may feel like it is pounding. Your blood pressure may start to climb. You may want to shout from the top of your lungs, “Can someone would just stop the noise, better yet, stop the merry go round – so I could get off and catch my breath?” Take a deep breath – there is hope. Actually, there are several smart strategies to help you achieve and maintain work life balance. Work life balance is like a dance but you take the lead!
1. Be Intentional. Choose to live your life on purpose. Know your priorities and align with your values. Learn to say “no” to the things that take you away from achieving your goals. 2. Set Boundaries. When others are demanding more than you are willing to give, know when to draw the line. Take care of yourself and your priorities before taking care of others. Otherwise, you may exhaust your efforts. 3. Schedule your downtime in advance. Plan ahead by booking a lunch date, a shopping day, or a girls get away. By marking something you enjoy doing on the calendar, you create anticipation and excitement. It gives you something to look forward to instead of something to stress over. 4. Be Social. Take the focus off you and get to know more about your colleagues, friends, and families. Start forming closer connections by learning what some of their hopes, dreams, and ambitions are. You will discover that others are encountering similar challenges and triumphs along the way – parenting teenagers, caring for an aging parent, going back to school, or transitioning to a new career path. 5. Delegate More. Let others do what they love to do and you do what you love to do. Focus on what you excel at. Let me reassure you; you are not alone. Work-life balance is about a choice. It’s about choosing an attitude about what is going to irritate you and what you will let go of. Give yourself permission to have some fun. Life is too short to stress yourself out. a DEBRA KASOWSKI, BScN CEC is an award-winning best-selling author, transformational speaker, blogger, world class business strategist and certified executive coach.
