Gratitude in every situation Spring is in the air…thank goodness. I am usually not one of those people who constantlycomplain about the weather, but this year a few complaints sprinkled out. In late January I took a tumble down the icy back steps and broke a rib., that forced me to stop all activity. This was tough, as I love to cross country ski and have a workout routine that I follow religiously. I was so disappointed, as I was on the way to the airport when I fell, to attend the launch of the Victoria Fabulous@50. Not only is Victoria one of my favorite places to visit, but Annie Pool the Victoria Director, has become a friend and someone I enjoy being around and love to support. The usual comments came up, maybe the universe is trying to slow you down….how dare the universe try that. I had already made the decision to slow down and be more focused, so I don’t think that was it. Even though I was bummed out to miss my trip to Victoria, some really good things came out of being immobile for a few weeks. I found out how loved I am, friends and family coming by, bringing food (popsicles) and gifts, and keeping in contact daily to see how I was doing. My one-armed husband (another story) played nurse, making sure I took my pain medication and helping me get dressed. That was a comical sight. I will leave it to your imagination. A man with the use of one arm (the left one), helping a women who can not move much, get dressed. Interesting….

our story Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman!
Arlene Dickenson signs her newest book “All In” for Fabulous@50 founder Dianna Bowes at Winspear evening hosted by Investors Group.
I had the time to talk to my visitors and the conversations went deep. And another nice bonus was my business plugged along without me. When I started Fabulous@50 I wanted to be able to have a business where I did not have to babysit it 8 hours a day. I have so much gratitude for my life, the ability to stay home when I was hurt without a worry, and to not have to fret about money or how things would be looked after. While I spent the days on the sofa healing, I had time to really think and this is when the idea of this e-Magazine hatched. I wanted to give my community a gift, and as a graphic designer I decided an e-Magazine would be perfect. With Calgary and Victoria starting to grow, I felt an e-Magazine would be a perfect way to connect us all. I hope you enjoy the articles, please share it with your friends and family. It is an interactive magazine, so you should be able to click on links to our website for more information on events and more. Be grateful...if not now, when? a Fabulously yours,
DiannaBowes
Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer woman. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! www.fabulousat50.com

{Nothing beats Confidence}
Put your Best Look Forward Would you like it if when you walked into a room people were attracted to you and wanted to talk to you? Imagine showing up confidently without having to say a single word. Your appearance, body language and facial expressions are speaking before you do. What might people get from you when they first look at you; even before you say a single word? Is your personal presence saying what you want told about yourself? If it is, then you are likely a confident person and people are getting that from you. If you are not sure what message your personal image is sending, ask yourself if you are feeling confident? If not, then it may be worth it to put your best look forward to make yourself and others feel attracted to you. HOW YOUR ARE PRECEIVED
Looking your best is one of the ways to build your self-confidence but you must be clear how you want others to perceive you. Depending on the occasion, you may want to be perceived differently. For example, when in business, you typically want to be perceived as being
professional, credible, competent and trustworthy. However, if you are going on a date, looking professional may be offputting because it may be perceived as being too uptight and therefore not open to be casual and playful. Knowing what message you want to send and how you want to be perceived is an important step towards feeling more confident. We all have an image whether we consciously design it or not. How we show up definitely tells a story about what we think of ourselves and also how we want to be treated. THE THRESHOLD EFFECT
When you walk into a room, you create what psychologists call “The Threshold Effect”. In that decisive moment, your visual impact will have some people making assumptions about you in the following areas:
6 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March • 2015
••• How we show up definitely tells a story about what we think of ourselves and also how we want to be treated. ••• •
How much money you make (your economic level)
•
Your education level
•
Your social position
•
Your level of sophistication
•
Your trustworthiness
•
Your abilities, character and temperament
•
Your success in general
•
And even if they like you!
These assumptions are made from very superficial information: your clothes, hairstyle, eyewear, accessories; the cleanliness of your clothes; even by the way you move your body. All of these assumptions are made within seconds even before you say a single word. This is called your non-verbal communication. Your appearance and your body language communicate messages. Your image is a wordless but powerful language shouting long before you speak even a single word. It is for this reason that you want your appearance, body language and facial expressions to tell the story you want told. FIRST IMPRESSIONS
From this first impression, you will either validate their assumptions about you or you will need to work diligently to convince them to change that first impression of you once they start to talk with you. Clothing covers 90% of our body, so it is inevitable that it makes the biggest first impression and sends messages about: •
who you are
•
what you think of yourself
•
and how you expect to be treated.
You can create and manage your image; it is your design. Your image is your calling card to success whether at work or in your personal life. It will enhance your potential for personal success and even professional growth or promotion. You therefore become a valuable asset for your company, your family and yourself. You will represent yourself and your product with a higher standard. When your image is handled, you switch the attention off yourself and onto the needs of others. You will become more service oriented. Hence, the people around you will have a more positive experience with you. They will be more responsive to you. This will give you a significant advantage in the marketplace and in social situations. You will have effectively created a personal brand/image that will win you quality results. Nothing beats confidence so put your best look forward and enjoy your positive interactions with people. Look your best. Feel confident. Become more. {SIPS ‘N TIPS}
Got a Headache from Drinking Wine? It’s probably your parent’s fault. “Where is the wine that doesn’t contain sulphites?” This is a common question we hear in our store. “Wine, it gives me a headache, so I need one without sulphites”, is another one. Here’s the fact: ALL wines contain sulphites. Sulphite, or sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a natural by-product of fermentation. All wine is fermented, therefore, all wines have sulphites. Many winemakers do add additional sulphites to their wines as it protects against spoilage. The world-wide wine industry produces millions of bottles of wine that are being transported across the globe regularly, so the industry has a vested interest in ensuring that when you open that bottle of wine for dinner, it is not spoiled from transportation through different temperatures, methods of transport, handling etc. Presently, sulphites added to wines are at the lowest level in history.
Sulfur Dioxide is both anti-microbial and anti-oxidant in nature - making it one of the top allies available to vintners, because it impedes the oxidation of the wine and prevents it from fermenting its way to vinegar. It is a naturally occurring chemical compound. You may also be surprised to learn that sulfur dioxide is used in most wineries as part of the housekeeping regime – way better than bleach, one might argue. There would be outrage by consumers if fermentation tanks, equipment, hoses and valves in a winery were subjected to harsh bleach in order to keep the facility clean and sanitary. Not to mention how it might adversely affect the taste! Therefore, sulphur dioxide is the preferred natural choice. FDA regulations in the US require all wines, both domestic and imports to disclose that if the product contains 10+ ppm (parts per million) to state on the label “Contains Sulphites”.

ALISON’S TOP 5 WINE PICKS {March 2015} TWO LOVELY ORGANIC WINES Laibach The Ladybird, South Africa $21.00 White Blend Lovely light straw colour. Some peach and stone fruit adds to a lovely complex nose. Medium bodied with some complexity from the lees. Creamy almost juicy palate. A wine that would complement rich, creamy seafood dishes. Laibach The Ladybird, South Africa $26.00 Red Blend
Alison Phillips sipping Sauternes in Sauterne, France in October 2014. Pure Bliss!
The legal maximum sulfite level for U.S. wines is 350 ppm, with most wines averaging about 125 ppm. Naturally occurring levels of sulfur dioxide in a wine, without chemical additives, would weigh in at around 10-20 ppm. ORGANIC WINES
If you suffer from asthma, you may very well be sulphites sensitive, and this can manifest in sinus congestion, difficulty breathing, nausea or dizziness. Cheese, bacon, olives even jam can cause this same reaction, not just wine. Choose wines that are marked “organic” on their labels. By definition, these wines are produced with organic grapes, and no additional sulphites are added to the wine. Dry reds and dry whites are your best choice. Blush, semi-sweet and dessert wines contain the most sulphites,(and the most residual sugars) so probably best for you to stay away from these.
Dark colour. Complex on the nose with some spice, leather and crushed berries. Will get some rose petal, cigar box and some meaty notes with ageing. Medium bodied, with good structure and great length. A wine with enough complexity and dimensions to improve with age. BEST VALUE Monasterio Gran Reserva 2005, Spain $18.99 Mouth watering, full bodied Spanish Red. For an older vintage wine, this is a rare knock out . NEW CANADIANS Dirty Laundry, The Secret Affair, Okanagan B.C. $28.00 Seductive White, aromatic blend of unctuous fruits and crisp acidity. Dirty Laundry, Dangerous Liasons, Okanagan B.C. $26.00 Berries, cherries, full of juicy red, fruit. However, if you are still suffering from headaches when you are drinking wine, especially reds, it could actually be attributed to any of these four reasons: 1. Amines – another chemical present in wine, also naturally occurring in fermented foods. Wine contains two kinds of amines, histamines and tyramines; histamines dilate blood vessels in the brain, while tyramines constrict them. Both of these actions can cause headaches in people who are sensitive to one or both of the chemicals. If, after one glass of wine you get a headache, it’s likely a reaction to the “amines”. Pop an anti-histamine before you know you will be drinking wine and it should solve the problem. 2. Tannins - are present in the skins and seeds of grapes as well as in the oak barrels which can provoke blood platelets to release serotonin. High serotonin levels can be associated with headaches. Sorry to say but this is the same situation with
chocolate, as it too releases serotonin. 3. Dehydration - Downing several glasses of wine in quick succession can lead to a headache because you are simply in need of hydration. Drink a large glass of water before consuming wine, then have one in between your glasses of wine. 4. Alcohol - The other culprit just might be Alcohol itself. It is well know that alcohol can trigger migraine headaches. Migraines in fact, are quite often hereditary. Therefore, by deduction, you are having headaches from drinking wine because you inherited the problem from your parents. So, good news! It’s not your fault! It’s not the wine! Blame your parents! Appreciating the
Power Within
With every season, chapter of your life or milestone moment, you have an opportunity to reflect and take note of how far you have come along your journey. Where you started from is not where you are now and who you are now is not who you were when you started on your path. You have changed. Change is often dealt a bad hand; however, if you have advanced, you have made progress and this is positive. If you stayed the same or took a few steps back, you may need to evaluate some of the decisions you made. Perhaps, there were a few lessons you needed to learn so that you can move forward and that’s a good thing! As you navigate change in your life, it is important that you pay attention to the power you have within yourself. In my coaching practice and even in my own life, I have come to realize that there are times we get a glimpse of the power within us and we take a step back. We wonder, “Is that really me?” and “Can I create a posi-
tive movement just by showing up in the world as myself?” Yes, you can. It is time to dare greatly. The glimpse you see is only a snapshot of the potential you have. You need to learn to trust yourself. It all starts with appreciation. Take time to reflect and look inwardly into who you are and what you want your life to be like. If it is not where you would like it to be, change it. If you cannot change it, adjust how you see things. Think back to times you felt confident, empowered, full of joy, or happy. When did you feel that the BEST YOU was shining through? What is it about those moments that made them so memorable? What do you have to do to recreate that energy and feeling? You often get what you project out into the world. If you want more joy and happiness, it is up to you to create it. Guess what? You have been there before; you just need to appreciate what strengths and qualities that you have that have made those memories so powerful. {continued on page 17} Celebrating baby boomer woman • 11
Brain
FUEL
Have you ever had any of these symptoms: fuzzy thinking, depleted energy, or low mood? If it is more normal than not to lack focus, and motivation you may want to look at how you’re fueling your brain. To begin with you need to know that blood sugar fluctuation is the most common biochemical imbalance that can lead brain dysfunction. To balance blood sugar, avoid refined sugars, and processed carbs. These foods not only decrease brain function but spike insulin levels, increase inflammation in the body, and can even lead to weight gain. Support brain function by proper fueling; include plenty of good fat, proper protein, supportive carbs, and sufficient hydration in your diet. This team works synergistically to absorb necessary vitamins and minerals needed for cognitive support. GOOD FATS
Since the brain is primarily made up of fat, it makes sense to ensure we get enough good fats in our diets. Good fats come from oils like fish, olive, flax, coconut, and camelina. Butter has made a glorious come-back offering nutrients that also help “oil the brain.” Avocado along with most raw nuts and seeds are more examples of oil-rich whole foods. Protein-rich foods such as meat or chicken contain high levels of tryptophan which is the foundation of serotonin, often referred to as the “happy hormone.” Tryptophan also appears in cheese, nuts, seeds, and legumes. Consider multipurpose quinoa; a whole egg provides much needed nutrients to support memory, energy,
Pistachi- Stuffed Dates with Coconut Flakes 1/4 cup shelled pistachios 8 dates, pitted 1.5 tsp organic shredded coconut In a food processor, puree pistachios until a thick paste forms, about 5 min. Spoon mixture into dates. Top with coconut. and mood levels. Try to source out organic and range-fed food whenever possible. Good carbs like fresh greens and fresh or frozen vegetables all play a supporting role to help absorb protein and fat. They slowly break down into brain-fuel glucose because of their high fiber content; they offer heaps of nutrition in every bite. The brain requires liquid to function properly. If you can’t focus, have fuzzy thoughts, or have low energy, try drinking some water. If you’re dehydrated, drinking water should improve symptoms in a short amount of time.
12 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March • 2015
For most people, it’s best not to let more than five hours go by without eating brain-supporting foods: skipping meals can destroy mood foundation. Supplements can be great but only food can keep you stable all day long; you need to eat enough nutrients to support body systems. Undereating means under-performing brain function or cognitive starvation. To give you some ideas of what to pack and go or keep on hand for snacks, consider these choices: a hardboiled egg with carrots and celery; 1/2 avocado with a few slices of tomato and cucumber; handful of almonds with goji berries; or a handful of pumpkin seeds with dried blueberries. You could also try 1 or 2 tsp of coconut oil in a hot beverage or enjoy the recipe featured with this article as an easy, and healthy brain fuel treat. A step forward whether small or big is a step forward. Include the better choices to crowd out the not-so-good. It’ll help stabilize blood sugar, give you consistent energy, and discourage low mood by fueling the brain. Here’s to growing health!

{LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}
Why Less is More
Spring is fast approaching and after a long winter huddled inside, we often have a bunch of pent up energy. Now is the time when we come out of hibernation and take on a list of new projects - washing the windows, cleaning the garage, starting that new fitness program. There is no shortage of activity that can fill your hours. While that seasonal burst of energy can be great, consider doing less this spring. Take a lesson from Mother Nature. Yes, it’s true. Spring is the time when things start to happen after a long winter’s rest. BUT NOT ALL AT ONCE.
Flowers don’t burst into bloom. They begin with buds peeking out.
Trees slowly regain their leaves. The ice retreats gently from the river. Nature knows it is okay to set a leisurely pace. It’s us humans who fool ourselves into thinking that we have to move quickly or be busy all the time. In fact we sometimes think that busyness is an indicator of our worthiness. The busier I am, the more I am accomplishing or contributing. The longer the to-do list and the more things checked off, the better we are doing. More means better because we still value lists of accomplishments over quality of outcomes. Doing less this spring means actually having more time to do an excellent job on the things that you do tackle.
14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March • 2015
••• Take some time to go outside and let Mother Nature guide you. ••• Having a little down time not only allows you to recharge, it also creates a space in which you can hear your authentic voice speaking. That’s the voice that lets you know that you are worthy just because you are a human being - not because you have a jam packed schedule. That inner voice is the one that allows you to choose meaningful and intentional activities rooted in things that matter most. It’s the voice that discourages you from being too busy. So here’s your challenge: GIVE YOURSELF PERMISSION TO DO LESS.
Take at least one thing off of your to-do list. Chances are there are things that you can either ignore (yikes!) or at least
delegate to someone else. Think long and hard about what you agree to in the next month. Do you really want to do it or are you responding to your “need to please” inner self? Take some time to go outside and let Mother Nature guide you. Go for a walk and be inspired by what is happening around you. Not to do more but to ease into this new season. Doing less this month is the path to actually doing more. I admired Joan Rivers. She had this ballsy, outrageously funny way of sharing whatever was on her mind. You didn’t have to like it, but you always knew where she stood. She was real; she was authentic. In a world gone mad with spin-doctor communication, Joan will be sorely missed.
Just so you know - I’m pretty sure that I was born talking. My maternal grandmother – Grammy Ed - could talk the hind leg off a donkey. (Now if you don’t understand that statement, well, it was just one of her umpteen dozen sayings – many of which just spill from my mouth willy nilly!) I got my gift of gab from her.
I know I hunger to have those flat-out honest conversations that help me ease my hurts, vent my opinions, and understand my place on earth better. Now I don’t yearn to be another Joan Rivers. For one thing, I lack the edginess of the tough-girl personality. In fact, one dear friend told me recently that I had such a nice way of expressing myself, that I could tell him to go to hell and he’d anticipate the trip. But I do yearn to share both out loud and in print.
When she chose to hold court with her storytelling, you had to be sharp to stay with her, because she’d tell at least four other stories that wove themselves throughout the main one. It was a gift she had and sometimes a curse for listeners who lost the threads and couldn’t follow her to the main ending. While I inherited her storytelling ability, I have also honed my listening skills. People can and pretty much do tell me just about anything.

I’ve been privileged to hear many stories – the horrific, the bizarre, the amazing; all of them real and heartfelt. For instance, in my college instructor days, a young man tracked me down in my office. He was not one of my students, but he had bought a copy of my study skills book and was determined to find me. He’d come straight from his job as a construction laborer and apologized for the dust on his clothes. LIFELINE
It didn’t take me long to find out that this sweet fellow was looking for a lifeline so he could hang onto his dreams. You see, growing up in the Maritimes where jobs were scarce, he’d been told over and over by his well-meaning parents that he’d better just hang onto whatever job he found. With a disastrous school experience behind him, he had not demonstrated the smarts needed to earn the degree needed to become a veterinarian – his dream occupation. He stuck it out in his parents’ concerns for him as long as he could.
Then he moved west and found my little book, and then me. A long road of part time course upgrading faced him. His current work paid the bills but his plea was clear – was there hope for him? I proceeded to shower him with as much optimism and encouragement as I possibly could. He hadn’t arrived at my door without an extreme dose of determination. I did not want him walking away from me without that lifeline he came for. He talked, I listened. I talked, he listened. Then with a thousand thank-you’s, he was gone. I don’t know what happened to him, but I pray that his life turned out the way he wanted it to. And I thank whatever force brought him into my life to remind me how important we are to each other’s stories. This column, Tea with Sue, is for you. Let’s share our stories, our opinions, our hopes and our dreams. Drop me a note. Ask me anything. I’d love to hear from you. As a speaker and a writer, Sue believes in the magnificence of everyone. You need to tap into what made you feel most alive. Chances are you surrounded yourself with people who challenged you and helped you grow and also celebrated you. You saw problems as possibilities and opportunities to be solved. You stretched out of your comfort zone and took calculated risks to try new things. The excitement and anticipation made it all worth it. Appreciate the power within yourself. You know what makes you come alive.

{Fabulous@50 Featured Member} Lorraine Hupka - A woman who embraces life In what ways do you prefer to give back or pay it forward? I can’t honestly say that in my life I have sought out ways to give back or pay it forward…not intentionally. I asked my daughter if she could think of anytime that I did either of these things, what they were and why she thought I did them. Her response was “how many examples, and how many pages do I have?” Then she shared this with me…..true giving back is when someone helps another, with no rhyme, reason or payback in sight. She said “Do you remember when you were helping a client who was stuck in the snow behind your business, when a gentleman, who appeared to be down on his luck, came along and helped push her car out. She then drove away without even saying thank you, and you ran inside to get some money to give him so that he could have coffee and a warm lunch. That is a true selfless act, you will never know if the woman arrived at her destination, or what the gentleman spent the money on,
but it doesn’t matter, because the act was done not for recognition, but simply to offer help and hope with no expectations of the outcome”. Thank you Maryanne, my beautiful daughter. What is your vision of great leadership? The foundation of great leadership must begin with someone who is first and foremost an amazing teacher, this doesn’t necessarily mean being Harvard educated or holding a master’s degree. The qualities that I think a leader must have are integrity, empathy, forethought, the ability to give and forgive, but most importantly the strength in one’s self to embrace change and love unconditionally If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? Learning to take pause, sit back and always try to remember that “this too shall pass”.

••• Be proud of who you are, where you are, how you got there, and where you are going….be it in stilettos or sneakers. ••• Embrace what you have been given, and appreciate what you have. I truly believe that in doing so, we are more open and able to appreciate the gifts that we have, embrace them and take pause to share them. How do you celebrate when you achieve a goal or a milestone? For me the celebration begins with the journey that leads us to the goal. The people we meet, the places we go and the memories that will be with us always…the true celebration is the fact that even if the goal or milestone appears complete, there is always another journey waiting for us just around the corner.

Understanding Emotions in a Time of Change There are many reasons to embrace being fabulous @ 50. Some may be that our family responsibilities are less; most of our kids are grown and out on their own. We have more financial freedom, time to invest in ourselves and (fill in the blank with the rest of your fabulousness here)_____________. However, there are also challenges associated with our 50’s. One being the dreaded menopause or “The ‘Pause” as it is often referred to. This is a time of major change and emotions are often linked to how gracefully we can make this change. During peri-menopause and menopause, there is disruption in a chain of biochemical activity, which in turn affects the production of mood-regulating chemicals, including serotonin and endorphins. The constant change of hormone levels during this time can have a troubling effect on emotions. Possible mood swings, irritability, anxiousness, temper tantrums, depression, surprising highs followed by equally unexpected lows -- and none of it seems to make any sense. Some days it feels even feels like you’re a kid again, learning to play fair on the playground. Ughhhh. But… What if there was a way to make sense of these emotions? To organize our emotions, understand and control them. What if we could learn to be intelligent about emotions? There is something called emotional intelligence or EQ.
Similar to IQ it can be measured, but that is where the similarity ends. Unlike IQ, which is unchangeable, EQ can be learned, understood and increased. It is possible to have the ability to monitor one’s own emotions, discriminate between different emotions and label them appropriately. Then, use this information to guide thinking and behavior to deal with mood swings, depression, anxiety and other emotions we feel during menopause with grace and control. The first step in understanding emotions and to begin to be intelligent about them is to place them into an organized system. Breaking them down into manageable sections and subsections, then define each of them. NON VERBAL SIGNALS
Some parts of emotional intelligence are as simple as understanding nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions. Our own self-expression and also how we perceive others is important. The emotions that we perceive can carry a wide variety of meanings. If someone is expressing angry emotions, the observer must interpret the cause of their anger and what it might mean. For example, if someone at the office is acting angry, it might mean that they are dissatisfied with your work or it could be because they got a speeding ticket on the way to work. If your having an emotionally charged morning, this could spiral out of control and leave you in tears or worse yet, have you keeping your emotions bottled up inside.

The ability to manage emotions effectively is a key part of emotional intelligence. Regulating emotions, responding appropriately and responding to the emotions of others are all important aspect of emotional management. In our fabulous 50’s, we can use many tools that are self-managed if we take the time to invest in ourselves. The good news is EQ increases with age, unlike IQ, which never changes, we still can improve our EQ well into our 60’s by understanding it and putting a few strategies into place. There may be a need for support from our physician however; EQ is a
valuable tool that helps us be more in control of our selves, our lives and ultimately be happier as a result. Bonita Lehmann is a Fabulous@50 diamond member coach.
