Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. {LIFE IS JUST A PHASE}
Take a look in the mirror Imagine you are walking down the street and as you pass by a store window you catch a glimpse of someone’s reflection. It takes a second for you to realize that you are actually looking at yourself. Maybe it happens one morning when you look in the bathroom mirror. It’s not that you don’t recognize your physical self – although that might be the case – a momentary wake-up call that your body has changed in some way. It’s more that you don’t recognize the person looking back at you. Who is this person in the mirror? Sometimes we simply lose sight of who we are or what is important to us. Maybe it happens because we have spent a great number of years supporting others and our own hopes and dreams slowly have slipped away as we put those of loved ones ahead of our own. Maybe we have been living crazy busy lives which have not left enough time for
us to stay continually in touch with the essence of who we are. Year after year we change and grow and learn. When we don’t make an effort to stay current with ourselves, it’s no wonder that the day comes when we no longer recognize ourselves. Image is about the presence we project to the world. It certainly affects how others perceive us. But when we lose the essence of who we are, what are we actually projecting? In order to show up authentically in the world we need to have a strong and clear perception of ourselves. But our self-image is not set in stone. It’s a dynamic and fluid view of who we believe ourselves to be. When we have clarity about who we are now, we can align our choices and priorities with that image. We can be purposeful about how we show up every day and that will influence our interactions with those around us.

Image is about the presence we project to the world. It certainly affects how others perceive us. But when we lose the essence of who we are, what are we actually projecting? If you are feeling like you have lost touch with yourself, here is a great activity to try. Find a picture of yourself as a child. Find a picture of yourself as a young woman. Look closely at the person in the photo. Remember her. What was important to her? What brought her joy? What made her laugh? What were her strengths, her skills, her talents?
Yes you have likely changed in many ways from those points in time, but there are elements of yourself that persist.
It’s not that you don’t know who you are. You might have just forgotten parts of yourself. Recapture
Recapture those parts of yourself that made you uniquely and wonderfully you then and breathe life into them again. Once you begin to do that, it often is easier to see what is important to you now, what brings you joy, which qualities and strengths you have developed. Take a look in the mirror. Say hi to yourself. It’s definitely worth it to make your reacquaintance. a Laurel Vespi is a certified life coach, author and motivational speaker who helps women live more mindfully no matter what phase of life they are in. Easy Ways to Update Your Wardrobe for Spring Spring is a time to finally ditch those dreaded winter boots, layers of bulky sweaters and after months of a seemingly endless winter get out into the world and enjoy! Everything is great, except for one problem — you have nothing to wear. Fear not, Canadian lifestyle expert Janette Ewen, offers her top tips on how to update your wardrobe and be fashion ready for spring. Try bright colours: During the winter, we tend to gravitate towards shades of black, gray, brown and more black. For spring, inject some colour into your closet with an uplifting statement piece like a bright or pastel skinny jean. “One
hot colour to add to your wardrobe this spring is Tangerine,” says Ewen. “It’s an energizing juicy shade of orange that’s not overwhelming.” Make a jewelry statement: Switching up your jewelry is one of the simplest ways to update your look for spring and having the right hero piece is key. It’s time to bring in the ultra-fabulous and always effective statement necklace. The right seasonal necklace can add life to even the blandest outfits. “You can choose a colourful chunky piece or an elongating drop style like Pandora’s Shimmering Rose necklace.

Feeling Naked Being NUDE “My clothes had represented the story of my old self and my limiting belief that falsely served as my protection. Shedding them had not stripped me but revealed me.... As I Am.” 8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March • 2016
A couple years ago I was introduced to a female photographer who was involved in a project called “As I Am” where women are photographed in the nude with natural hair and no make up.These are not sexy boudoir photos but power photos for stepping past fear. I and several other women were invited to take part in this project as a way to evoke some personal transformation. Of course, my initial reaction was “no way, I don’t do naked”. It would prove to be a tremendous challenge, and incredibly liberating. Feeling Naked vs Being Nude... This is what my mind pondered after the shoot. Is naked the same as nude? I invite you to take a moment to close your eyes and think about these two words. Do the words have the same meaning for you? What comes to mind when you hear naked, and what comes to mind when you think of nude? ...... Now open your eyes ... (yes, I know, they must already be open if you can read this) For me they are not the same and I think this is why. In the dictionary nude and naked are synonyms and used to describe the other. They both mean without clothes. Naked, however, has a second meaning. A meaning that is attached to feeling... the feeling of being naked, exposed, stripped, unprotected. With this in mind I think back to my experience of doing the nude photo shoot and why I was so uncomfortable with the thought of doing it. It was not so much about not liking my own body. At that time I had done quite a bit to shift my weight and fitness so I was pretty comfortable with myself. Yet, this shoot was still a great stretch for me. It had more to do with the uncomfortable feeling of being naked in a place that did not make sense to my sensibilities. I had never even walked around my house naked.
I'm fine with nudity in the right place; a bedroom, bathroom, change room etc. I had grown up in a household that was extremely conservative and reasonably modest. I have always felt quite shy in my own skin. As a nurse however, I am used to seeing people naked and note, that most of the time it is when people are at their most vulnerable. My experiences with nakedness evoke not just the image of no clothes but a feeling of being exposed, vulnerable and unprotected. A sense of being stripped of not only clothing but protection and power. When I think of nude I have a completely different experience. When I hear the term nude, I think of art, beauty, empowerment and freedom. I have always admired people who pose for those beautiful black and white nude photos. Their confidence seems to leap from the page. I wanted to be one of those people. At the start of my photo shoot when I first undressed I felt very uncomfortable and exposed. I felt naked. I took a deep breath, stepped though my fear to cross the floor and sit on the white drapery. Within a couple minutes of taking pictures I felt a huge shift. The photographer was very professional and matter of fact. I no longer felt naked, I was feeling powerful. I realized that my clothes had represented the story of my old self and falsely served as my protection. Shedding them had not stripped me but revealed me.... As I Am. I love this metaphor and will use it as I stretch and grow in the future. As I choose to shed limiting beliefs and old stories, I may feel naked until I step through that fear to simply being nude. a Joanne Neweduk is the Director and Community Leader for Fabulous@50 Calgary. How to Be Fit, Fabulous, and Fun at Any Age Spring is a great time to renew, refresh, and recharge from hibernation and shed the winter woollies. In the winter, we tend to have been drawn to comfort food and comfort clothing. You do not have to wait until spring to get moving. Now is always a great time to get active, clean out the closet, and make room for all those exciting activities you had in mind. There are so many stereotypes in society about what aging gracefully or getting older means. Media often reflects that getting older means slowing down, watching lots of television, and wearing frumpy clothes, however, this is further from the truth. Think of the people that you know. Age is the number that reflects how long you been on Earth and perhaps the years of experience you have on the subject of you but it does not reflect your attitude and your mindset.
Women are taking better care of themselves. They are going to fitness classes, getting involved in sports, taking up weight training, and eating healthier. At the age of 77 years, Ernestine Shepherd, the world’s oldest female bodybuilder is inspiring others by remaining active as she ages. According a Prevention Magazine video feature, she states her activity has fended off anxiety, depression, and high blood pressure. She lives by example and the many people who attend her fitness classes say, “If she can do it, so can I!” You do not have to be a bodybuilder to get the benefits of being active. Go for a walk with a friend or swim a few laps. Activity makes you feel stronger. Eating better feels good. As you age, it is even more important to look after your health and vitality.

Laugh lines, wrinkles, and stretch marks are symbols of a greater story -a story that has many lessons to share. The clothing you wear and how you carry yourself expresses how young at heart you are. People look at the whole package – body, mind, and soul. They get a sense of who you are by how you express your inner self and the confidence you radiate when you look your best on the outside. More Refined
Do not get carried away with worrying about what other people think but also don’t let yourself go because of it. Take pride in who you are. I love sharing Dr. Daniel Amen’s 18/40/60 rule with others: “When you’re 18, you worry about what everyone is thinking of you; when you’re 40, you don’t give a darn what anyone thinks of you; when you’re 60, you realize nobody’s been thinking about you at all.” The biggest reason for this is because people have been too busy looking after their own lives. It is important that you focus on your own life and what will make it fabulous and fun. Many women have a passion for fashion and it doesn’t stop just because you’re getting older. You taste may become more refined. Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you have to dress old. Baby boomers know their fashion. After all, they created fashion trends like the mini skirt, bikinis, and fashion boots. The hemlines may get a little bit longer and the midriffs less revealing, it doesn’t mean you cannot pick items that flatter your body shape. There are several timeless classics that never go out of style that are essential to having your wardrobe like a crisp white collared blouse, pant suit, and the little black dress. Keep your wardrobe current. You can never go wrong with neutrals and the basics in creating a wardrobe that offers versatil-
ity and style. Steer clear of youthful trends that are revealing; they may look like you were shopping in your daughter’s closet. Ensure that you’re going for a proper fit. Clothing that is too tight may look like you kept it in the closet for a long time hoping to fit in at once again. Whereas, clothing that is too loose or misshaped looks like you’re trying to hide something. It is not the number on the tag that defines how you look in an outfit. Avoid shapeless blazers that don’t flatter your figure. Find a blazer that nips in at the waist or is a bit shorter that streamline your shape. Wear items that fit well and you feel great in. Confidence
Don’t be afraid of buying some beautiful lingerie or a great fitting bra and underwear. Never underestimate the confidence you have when the undergarments fit well. Everything gets a little boost including your mindset. You will even stand a little bit taller. Add a pop of color to your wardrobe with the great scarf, accessories, or fabulous pair of shoes and you are good to go. You can never go wrong with a little bit of red lipstick for that extra flash of confidence. Clothes are only a small reflection of who you are. Look after yourself and put together a package that is the real deal – an empowered woman who is fit, fabulous, and fun! a DEBRA KASOWSKI, BScN CEC is an award-winning best-selling author, transformational speaker, blogger, and Certified Executive Coach. Your Spending
SAVVY March is when we celebrate some cool things like International Women’s Day. This got me thinking about a friend whose husband died recently, and in the days following she discovered that his life insurance policy had terminated when he turned 70, as had the insurance attached to a pricey truck loan, and their line of credit. Ouch. I meet a lot of people in my role as a mortgage broker, and we often get to talking about money. Most people I meet really want to save for their future, but a lot of time the “saving” part is a long way down the list of things they have to do. Although they want it to be a top priority, putting money in savings typically comes well after paying for housing, groceries, vehicles, insurance, education, and all the other things we make a priority. Add to that the way that the job market and shifts in oil and gas were, and 2015 was a tough year for a lot of people. Things have to get better, right? Right! In order to work on my own financial freedom, I’ve put myself into a financial fitness challenge. I started small this week, but I’m thinking really big because I have some huge goals that are worth it. I lead two companies, and I am committed to help them to grow no matter what the economic outlook is for our region. I need money in order to do that. To make it hap-
pen, I have to trim my spending personally, and in my businesses. I’ve already started by making just a few small changes, and they are adding up! I removed my manicured false nails this week (saving $60 a month), I’m washing my own car every week instead of taking it in (saving $60 a month), and I’m using dryer balls in the dryer (saving $30 a month). Just these three small changes mean I am well on my way to saving $150 a month. This is just a start, and I know there are other places that we can trim, from cable TV and Internet subscriptions, to cell phone plans, to things in the office like encouraging staff to use pdf documents and email instead of printing off documents. Are you ready to get started in a financial fitness challenge to boost your spending spirit and have total control over your money? a Yvonne Wilchewski is a professional entrepreneur. Mucus
Friend or Foe?
What is mucus? Mucus is an important viscous fluid that lubricates and protects the digestive and respiratory passages in the body. Mucusproducing tissue lines the mouth, nose, sinuses, throat, lungs and gastrointestinal tract, trapping unwanted substances like bacteria and dust. Gastric mucus lines the stomach, preventing the highly acidic gastric juice from digesting the stomach itself. However, an over production of mucus can lead to respiratory and digestive problems; the most common symptoms are painful pressure in your head (especially if you bend over), pain in the face or head when outside in the cold, stuffed or runny nose, ear ache, tinnitus, neck stiffness, impaired breathing, bad breath, poor sense of smell, taste or hearing, poor appetite, dullness, lack of energy, feeling depressed. Mucus is purely of the Earth and Water elements or Kapha dosha and people with a strong presence of Kapha in their
body have a tendency to over produce mucus, though an Earth/Water imbalance in the other elemental types will cause the same problem. Early spring is Kapha time of year when the Earth and Water elements have their strongest influence on everyone. Additionally, springtime pollen is a source of considerable aggravation. At this time it is good to follow the food recommendations and practices that will bring balance in this area. These are based on the underlying concepts of stimulating, lightening, warming and drying. Mucus reducing guidelines • Avoid mucus increasing foods such as dairy, chocolate, refined sugars and flours, fried foods, red meat, pork, salt and yeast. • Reduce foods that are heavy, oily, cold; also sweet, salty and sour eg. nuts, raw or cold food, wheat, oats, soy, tofu, olives, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados, melons, cakes, crisps, vinegar.
16 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I March • 2016
• Favour foods that are light, dry, warm; also spicy, bitter and astringent eg. ginger, asparagus, leafy greens, aubergines, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, celery, pumpkin (vegetable and seeds), beans and legumes. • Avoid overeating, especially at night. • Avoid daytime sleep as this will produce more mucus. • Drink ELS Kapha Herbal Tea, especially formulated to stimulate and energise the Kapha dosha (available from our online store). Cleansing practices • Rise early (not later than 7am) and cardio exercise (get sweaty!) first thing in the morning to stimulate your whole system. As you start to warm up, mucus will loosen. Remember, never swallow mucus, always spit it out! • Deep diaphragm breathing activates the immune and lymphatic systems to remove toxins, phlegm and mucus from your body. • Flushing your nasal passages with warm saline water using a Neti pot is a good maintenance practice but will not clear congested thick mucus in the sinus. To clear your sinus and lubricate your nasal passages try sniffing a few drops of Herbal Nasal Oil up each nostril (available from our online store). Nasya Nasya is one of Ayurveda’s most powerful techniques and a full therapeutic Nasya procedure is recommended when
excess mucus overloads the digestive and lymphatic systems resulting in acute or chronic manifestation of symptoms. Perhaps the most surprising effect reported from clients beyond the alleviation of symptoms is the vast improvement in the quality of mental clarity, enthusiasm and energy they feel after the Nasya procedure. WELL-BEING through a Good Relationship with Money
Petra Remy, MA ACS, CFP
Have you thought about your relationship with money? For many it’s problematic. Growing up, we may hear conflicting views about money like those identified by Kahler & Fox in “Conscious Finance: Uncover Your Hidden Money Beliefs and Transform the Role of Money in Your life” (2007).
Help is available. Financial advisors provide advice so that you can make informed investment decisions. They work with you to develop a plan that meets your values and your comfort with risk. Responsible investing in companies meeting environmental, social and governance standards, addresses both of these issues.
• There is always enough – There is never enough
Life Goals
• Money brings happiness – Not having money brings happiness • Money is important – Money is unimportant • I don’t deserve money – Money is evil I believe that even successful people who run businesses, cities and countries and contribute to global welfare feel hesitant to take control of their finances. Good relationships show, and give, happiness. It’s time to get familiar with your finances because a good relationship with money increases overall wellbeing. And, financial planning helps you create a good relationship with money. Financial planning for retirement, business growth, estate or trust plans, takes specific knowledge. Busy professionals, optimize your time.
Good relationships increase likelihood of success, but need nurturing and adapting as people and circumstances evolve. Regularly assessing your financial plan keeps you on track to your life goals. Honesty and the courage to tackle fears head-on help resolve problems that arise, keeping the relationship healthy. As an Investment Advisor, that is how I support your relationship with money. Having transitioned through big life changes, I understand risk and fear. I love building good relationships with clients as we build their financial plan. Whether planning for today or tomorrow, a business, retirement, large purchases or elder care, it’s important to work together to incorporate their needs and goals into their financial plan and it’s rewarding to keep it on track with regular checkpoints.

Food of Love
Meal planning should lead to great food but it’s become a quagmire! Working with all the ideas like paleo, carb based diets, carb free diets, eating for your blood type, focussing on protein, plant based diets has filled our heads with mixed messages and resulted in at home cooks everywhere saying, “Fend for yourself. I am not cooking tonight.” Add to that a family member with Crone’s disease, another with a severe celery allergy, and people who’d rather start their day without breakfast, and it’s amazing that we can figure out what to feed ourselves, let alone others that may live in the same household! My answer is that food of love – call it comfort food, or whatever gets your taste buds going – should be nutritious, deli-
cious, and mostly simple. It won’t always be simple, because when you find yourself hosting ten people for dinner, things are bound to get a little more complicated, but the idea is still one of simplicity leading to food of love. I’m a big believer in listening to my body. I think our brains naturally do a decent job in sending us messages about what fuels us up, and what doesn’t. If the messages are hard to filter or the situation is complicated, medical testing and food challenges can usually help us figure out the rest. When I was a youngster, there was this stew that my mom frequently made and it never sat quite right after I ate it. Mom played with the ingredients a little and after a few tries we figured out that the

troublesome component was a popular bouillon cube that was apparently “all natural.” That early food experiment is one of the reasons I tell people that just because things are “natural” doesn’t mean they are good for you! Rubber and cork are both natural products, and I certainly don’t want to eat them! Getting excited about cooking doesn’t mean you have to spend all your time in the kitchen. For me it means a commitment to create some really good food, though I don’t do it everyday, because some days are crazy and there’s only time for a bowl of popcorn for supper. Of the unappreciated yet super simple things to cook, eggs are one of my favourites. I’m really grateful we can get such great eggs and that even the cholesterol lowering champions have agreed that eggs are a good part of a healthy diet. Eggs are about weekend brunches with fancy eggs, and they’re about party platters with elegantly filled devilled eggs, and they make a nice little plate for holding cheese. Food of love, or comfort food, or whatever we call it is the stuff that resonates from your tastebuds to your brain and to your heart. Sure it’s nice when the entire household will eat it (and even easier when you are just cooking for yourself ) but we need to look for ways to entice ourselves to our own table first anyway. Time in the kitchen is challenging, sure, but I still think it should be LOADS of fun, if not so much in the planning and the prep, then at least in the eating! FANCY EGGS 1 medium can of diced tomatoes or 3-4 chopped fresh tomatoes 2 room temperature eggs
2 tablespoons chopped basil Zest and juice of one orange (about 1 tablespoon of zest and 2 tablespoons of juice) ¼ teaspoon pepper Use a non-stick frying pan that’s about15-20 cms across. Put it on the burner at medium to medium high heat. Pour the tomatoes into the pan. If you are using fresh tomatoes there won’t be a lot of juice, but don’t worry about it. The tomatoes will release liquid as they heat. You just need enough liquid for the eggs to sit on (using canned tomatoes makes this easier, and cheaper, while you get the hang of the dish), but I’ve done them on dry tomatoes and that works fine too. Heat the tomatoes through for about 2 minutes while you zest the orange and chop the basil. Stir in the basil, orange zest, orange juice, and pepper. Crack one egg at a time onto the bed of tomatoes, careful not to disturb the yolk. Let simmer for 4-6 minutes until the eggs are done to the degree you like (the egg white should be solid white while the yolk is soft, medium, or hard, depending on how you like it). You can add a pinch of salt to the eggs if you like. Serve with multigrain toast. Sprinkle a little extra basil on top, and have a slice of orange on the side to make for a pretty plate. Serves 1-2 people. a Dr. Pam Robertson launched The Ladybirds’ Kitchen blog (www.ladybirdskitchen.com) in February, where her goal is to help people get excited about cooking and food! {TEA WITH SUE}
An Ear-Piercing Scream! For sixty-five years, I’d convinced myself that I was born with just the right number of holes in my head, and nobody was going to convince me otherwise. Instead, I struggled with clip-on earrings or resigned myself to bare ears when the pinching became intolerable. Actually, I’ve always been skittish about anyone coming near my ears. The idea of a stranger closing in with a sharp object gives me the heebie jeebies. If I had a dollar for every time someone said, “Oh, it doesn’t hurt!” I could have retired at 23. Consider it a growth step in facing a fear (or more likely a moment of insanity). On October 25, 2015, I decide to get my ears pierced. With a dear friend in the lead, we head to a Claire’s store. Scene One: Sue to Clerk in Charge of Sharp Objects: “It’s taken me 65 years to do this. I’m quite terrified.” Clerk: “Now don’t you worry. I’ve done at least 1000 piercings. Here’s how this works.” In tones designed to sooth a five-yearold, she tells me step-by-step what will happen, all the while sterilizing her tools of torture. I pick out the biggest, sparkly, zirconia studs (hmmm, I’ve always wanted a Stud – steady now Sue, focus!) By this time I’m feeling pretty relaxed. Then I’m handed the official waiver to sign, complete with fine print. I always read the fine print. Big mistake – grim scenarios are detailed - the store will not be held responsible.
Scene Two: My clerk measures and marks the center of each ear lobe. She calls for the second clerk to check for accuracy. I call for my friend. Sue: “Come and hold my purse and my hand. You promised.”

“For sixty-five years, I’d convinced myself that I was born with just the right number of holes in my head, and nobody was going to convince me otherwise. “ My Friend: “Well, they have a teddy bear for you to hold.” Clerk in Charge of Sharp Objects (I hear her sigh): “Would you like the teddy bear?” Sue in a Tearful Tone: “Yes, please!” I take a selfie of my virgin earlobes, then I squeeze the stuffing out of that teddy bear. Scene Three: Piercing Guns at the ready, a clerk stands on either side of me. At the count of three, Bam! Both ears sport new studs. Sue: “Owwwwwww! That hurt!” My Friend: “Smile for the camera. Okay, again. Try not to look so stunned!” I smile bravely, pay the bill, and cart away aftercare solution and instructions. Hey where’s my lollipop?! Ten Weeks Later After patiently waiting the recommended time before removing the studs, I am eager to try out new earrings gifted by family and friends. Despite gentle tugging, the studs won’t budge. With a hold worthy of a sumo wrestler, I tug harder. Owww! Of course no one told me that bits of dried yuck would make removal a challenge. I clean up the holes and try to re-insert the studs. Apparently one needs a high level of manual dexterity plus superwoman eyesight to see those tiny holes. Finally, they slide in. Final Scene Who knew the importance of assessing
the thickness of one’s earlobes when buying fashion earrings? A friend’s gift amethyst and diamond earrings - sport backings like closed-up fish hooks. My friend wiggles and jiggles the first one through my right earlobe. It hurts, and the fit is tight. The left ear flatly refuses. Is there a diet for fat earlobes? My right ear pouts dramatically upon removal of the fish hook and won’t allow insertion of the stud in its place. Infection sets in, but I keep trying the stud -- nope. Now what? Back I go to Claire’s. The hole is free of infection but has grown over. Their sanitary rules will not allow them to insert my earring – it must be a brand-new, presterilized stud – for $40 more. Wanting some kind of resolution, I spy the tattoo and piercing parlor across the mall. (Another establishment whose door I swore never to darken!) There, for a modest fee, an angel of a young woman sweetly and gently coaxes the hole open and reinserts my stud. Success without pain! I ask my friends about changing earrings - how do they cope? “Well, I get my husband to do it.” Hmmm - I guess I need that Stud after all! a As an inspirational speaker and award-winning author, Sue Paulson inspires others to love their magnificence. Cheryl Ann Webster Empowering Women and Girls
How has hardship, tragedy, or trauma shaped who you are – what gifts have come of it? Growing up, I was painfully shy and filled with fear - my home was not a safe place. Because of this, I was hurting, but I kept quiet because I knew the most important rule in our home: little girls should be seen, not heard. In fact, silence was a sign of loyalty in our house, so instead of using my voice, I sketched and sculpted my thoughts, feelings, and cries for help. Although this process gave me great comfort, my childlike creations remained uninterpreted for many years. However, with each sketch, my sense of self began to shine through, so at the age of 16, I found the courage to leave home. That first big step, slowly lead to several tiny steps towards building a new life for myself. Today, as an award-winning artist and speaker, I am best known for my Beautiful Women Project – a project I designed, to empower women and girls, and to break the silence on stories untold. What would you consider to be your top three talents/skills? I blend my passion and formal training in art, psychology and communications, to provide ‘cringe–free’ interactive coaching sessions and facilitated workshops, as well as exhibits. I am greatly energized when working with strong teams and individuals, as they discover who and what is shaping their life, and the steps they need to take in order to become their own artist, in the design of their future.
If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? Art truly saved my life. Even though I failed to graduate high school, or get straight A’s in Art school, I found that expressing myself through Art, healed my pain, soothed my soul, and gave me a voice. At one point in my life, I turned my back on Art, and when tragedy struck, I began to drink myself into darkness. Thankfully, Art tapped me on the shoulder once again, reshaping my broken heart, and allowing me to rediscover the safe and healthy mode of feeling and sharing my emotions that it can provide. I’m happy to say that for the past 20 years, I’ve always picked up a pencil, not a bottle! Art changed my life. Who most inspires you and why? My sisters inspire me – not blood relatives, but all the women who I’ve been blessed to meet, and even some who passed

away before I was born, like Kathe Kollwitz and Emily Carr. I am inspired, because as women, we have to manage strong social pressures, internal insecurities, and a multitude of external expectations, yet we are driven to push through barriers, be the voice for those who cannot speak out, and pave the way for the next generation. It has been my experience, that no matter what one sister is dealing with, her sisterhood will be there to support her. What would you like to share with younger women about “being beautiful”? For women and girls of all ages, I say that being beautiful is less about what you see in the mirror, and more about what you feel in your heart. We are surrounded by messages that promote a fashionable body, but that fashion changes with time, and those messages do not have our best interests at heart. Our bodies are beautiful portraits of our life journeys: stretch marks the ribbons of motherhood, scars that remind us of the fragility of life - our shape and size are markers of our life experiences. We are beautiful just as we are! Acceptance of self does not mean that you shouldn’t strive to be healthier - it means you putting your life before your looks. The ART to feeling beautiful is to Accept and Respect yourself and others, and to Thrive in all that life has to offer :) What is it in nature that feeds your soul? When I’m walking in the woods, kayaking on a lake, or diving in the ocean, I feel like I’m in a painting, and Mother Nature is the artist. The vast array of colours, shapes, and textures, all dancing together, fills my soul. a

The Beautiful Women Project
Weighing in on Body-Image
I want to start by saying that bodyimage has little to do with what you look like, and everything to do with how you think and feel about the way you look. I believe we all have body-image issues, to varying degrees, at various times in our life. Think of body-image issues on a continuum: on one end, there is the healthy perspective, which is a realistic view of one’s actual physical form, and an acceptance of that form, to the other end, where there is an unhealthy perspective, a dissatisfaction of one’s own form, where the desire and effort to alter one’s form impacts daily life choices, in turn, impacting emotional wellness, as well as physical wellness.
Our body-image is influenced and shaped by a variety of factors, from intergenerational messages engrained in us from a young age, to current pressures brought on by our society: signs on the side of the buses going by, billboards, TV adverts, magazines, TV shows, movies and a whole array of social media. We as women are bombarded with messages that state in one form or another, that “unless you look a certain way, you will not be loved, accepted or successful.” Assuming we do not already look that ‘certain way,’ these messages also offer a solution. So we invest in improving ourselves: we pay to restrict our diet, we join a gym, and we beat ourselves up when our crazy schedules don’t include gym time.

“Self-acceptance is merely the first step to being emotionally and physically well. When we don’t have self-acceptance, we engage in a constant battle with ourselves, and the cycle of attempting to obtain the unattainable continues. “ No matter what we do, or how much we alter ourselves, our sense of dissatisfaction around our physical appearance doesn’t completely dissolve. Part of the reason is that the images portrayed as ideal, are unattainable to most, if not all of us. Additionally, what is ideal shifts on a regular basis, and although we may be able to change our clothes to suit the changing fashion trends, we cannot magically change the structure of our body to suit those ideals - nor should we!
and what is shaping our image, strengthen our Resilience to negative influences, and Take steps Towards self-acceptance. Please note that accepting yourself just as you are does not mean you shouldn’t aim to improve your health or physical ability. Self-acceptance is merely the first step to being emotionally and physically well. When we don’t have self-acceptance, we engage in a constant battle with ourselves, and the cycle of attempting to obtain the unattainable continues.
Body Image
When we have a healthy level of selfacceptance, which means, thinking and feeling positively about our amazing bodies, we can focus our attention and energy on other aspects of our life. In doing so, you will be surprised to discover how exercising, or choosing nutritional meals, comes more naturally and feels more like self care, than a calculated chore. As such, our self-esteem increases, our joy of life intensifies, and we achieve more of what we want in order to thrive in life!
Having a healthy body-image is essential to all of us, at all ages and stages of life. In my opinion, body-image is the foundation that shapes every other aspect of our life. When we perceive our physical form to be inadequate or unworthy of some other person, it holds us back from achieving personal and professional goals. I have spoken to many women who put off networking until they lose 10 pounds, or avoid video conferencing without their make-up, or women and girls who spend more time and energy focusing on their appearance, rather than on their career goals, relationships, or future aspirations. Furthermore, a less than healthy bodyimage can trigger emotional distress, disordered eating behaviours, leading to a range of physical problems. Awareness
As we don’t ‘grow out’ of body-image issues, nor do we ‘get over’ their impact, we can only deepen our Awareness of who

Empowered through Fashion There is a reason why we gals labor over the perfect out fit for a job interview, plan months ahead for what we will wear to weddings, cocktail parties, vacations and so on! Correct me please if I am wrong but when you look good you feel good and when you feel good you do life better. We are better Mom’s, Friends, Employees, Employers, Sisters, Wives and even grocery shoppers. Think about it. Have you ever had the perfect outfit for
a job interview and nailed it because you felt empowered in what you were wearing, or perhaps strutted into a cocktail party like you owned the place because you knew you were rocking that cocktail dress. Of course you have! It’s an amazing feeling and once you have experienced being empowered through fashion you will never want to go back. Here are a few strategies to have that “I got this” feeling in whatever you are wearing. Always ask yourself when shopping, do I love it?

Next question should be, is it flattering? This can be a tough one as most of us do not see our true reflection in the mirror. A technique I use in my boutique with women daily is to have them look at themselves in the mirror from neck down only and pretend it is not them that they are seeing. I ask them if they were to see this woman walking down the street what would you think of her outfit. It’s amazing when we step out of ourselves and head space what we will see. Next, ask yourself if the outfit is appropri-
ate for the occasion and lastly does it represent the look and image I want to put out there. There is a quiet confidence that comes with looking and feeling like your best you. Use fashion as a tool to bring your confidence forward and enjoy being empowered through fashion. a Michele Bilsborrow • Owner/operator & Certified Shopaholic • Cheeky Coutures Boutique, Red Deer •587.273.4438 • www.facebook. com/cheekycouturesboutique • www.cheekycoutures.com
