Mission: To INSPIRE, EDUCATE and EMPOWER the baby boomer woman! Be Fabulous! was designed specifically to be an event magazine to be presented to our guests at the Annual Fabulous@50 Experience and Martini Party. But something magical happened! Dianna Bowes took a look around and realized there was nothing in our community that was discussing the needs of the seasoned woman. Be Fabulous!, much like the Fabulous@50 tradeshows, seminars, the meetup group and the Fabulous@50 on-line membership, filled a gap. Since 2010, Be Fabulous! has spotlighted inspirational women on it’s cover and covered topics that mid-age women want to read about. The vision of creative director, Dianna Bowes, was to publish a magazine that would be written by baby boomer women for baby boomer women. Fabulous@50 and Be Fabulous! is more than a magazine, more than a tradeshow, more than a membership, it is a community! Find out more by going to our website. www.fabulousat50.com

Fabulous at 50 Lifestyle with Dianna Bowes
Bring your COMMUNITY together with a BOOK Ever since I was a little girl, I loved to escape through books. I have read thousands of books, as an adult I read several books at a time. My home has books stacked in every room, some for inspiration and some for the pure pleasure of escaping to a place, time or experience. Remember the Scholastic book clubs through school. I would carefully take the sheet home and my grandparents always had money for at least one book. Money was tight in those days, so it was a special purchase. As a teenager, I spent countless hours everyday in our local library losing myself in the endless books. It was a safe place for me to escape the craziness of my home. I still love the smell of a library or bookstore, I find it comforting and safe. As an adult, I read to learn, to be inspired and sometimes just to imagine. Reading is one of my greatest rewards. But because I have read before bed for so many years, reading is a natural sleep agent, no matter
what time of the day or night. I read, I get tired. My children never went to bed without a story, and I still have their books stored in our garage for the grandchildren to come. On a recent trip to Victoria, I spent an entire afternoon searching for a Free Library Box in the James Bay Area of town. I knew it was on a funny little street, but google couldn’t help me, so I went up and down and around until I found it. An adorable library box sitting in front of a quaint home, with chimes tingling from the tree beside it. What a gift. Then on a long bike ride the next day, I was out in the middle of nowhere, and there was a Free Library nailed to a fence. No house in sight, but a generous soul took the time to grace us with a free library. The general idea of a Free Library is to read a book, share a book, exchange a book and then repeat. No charge, and the faith of the Library Stewart (me) that

people will not damage or take advantage of the open invitation to the Library. It took me some time, but I finally tracked down an old magazine box from a local magazine and newspaper distributor in town. They were kind enough to deliver it to my home and I was chomping at the bit to get it painted. My husband looked through all the cupboards in the garage and found a primer to cover all the advertising of the previous product. I planned for a day to paint and then with the help of my 31 year old daughter, we went back in time and spent an afternoon painting and playing. We chatted, laughed and even splashed some sparkles on the box. Everything is better with sparkles, don’t your agree? We laughed about the sparkles, as my house was the craft house, where the girls would come and make a mess. And yes, sparkles were found for months after. Such fun memories! Love of Reading
This year for me has been a re-discovery of many things. One being my love of reading, another my love of being creative. So to be able to bring those elements together and share it with someone who also loves those two things, made it a very special day. One that others can benefit from as well. Plus, a shout out for books has my friends donating to share with my neighbors.
We will do our big launch this weekend, with a grand opening on Sept 24th from 1-3 at 11604-113 ave in Edmonton. For ideas on how to make your own Free Library, I went to https://littlefreelibrary. org/ You can buy boxes and register, but they also have lots of resources to help you. Sacred Sex by Barbara Lee
Responsibility I recently talked to a friend of mine who is struggling with her daughter’s response to her granddaughter’s request. This friend’s daughter became pregnant when she was 16 years old. Now her granddaughter is 16 years old and asking her mother for birth control. Her mother is refusing to help her get birth control because she doesn’t want her 16 yearold to have sex. She tells her daughter, “You should have learned from me not to repeat my mistakes.” In fact, her daughter has learned from her. She has learned the importance of taking the necessary steps to protect one’s self and one’s partner from sexually transmitted illness and from unplanned pregnancy. Sexually Transmitted Disease
Of course, as we age, the likelihood of getting pregnant diminishes. Once we hit menopause we no longer have to worry about it at all. Tubal ligations, hysterectomies, vasectomies and other procedures all remove the worry of unplanned pregnancy. Which is one of the reasons our risk for contracting a sexually transmitted disease increases. None of those conditions or procedures protect us from sexually transmitted disease. In fact, STDs have become common and are growing among older populations. In some nursing homes, there are actual epidemics of sexually transmitted illnesses.
Middle Aged Women
One of the most vulnerable populations to acquiring a new STD is newly-divorced middle-aged women. Willing to engage in more sexually risky behavior and unafraid of becoming pregnant, many fail to use protection. There is also evidence that physiological changes that take place during menopause also make us more susceptible to infection. Whatever our age, our need to be responsible does not end. Taking responsibility for safe sex cannot be accomplished effectively in the act – or the morning after. Instead it takes the kind of respect and communication between two people that is borne out of care, both for our own needs and for the well-being of our partner. We are never so old that we can stop protecting ourselves and our partners from sexually transmitted disease.
8 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I September • 2016
And it is worth noting that more than a few women have been surprised to find themselves pregnant into their 50s. Screening
Sexually transmitted diseases can have serious, life-long repercussions and can be spread through vaginal intercourse, anal intercourse, and oral sex. Not having sex is the only sure way to prevent STDs and unplanned pregnancies. The next best thing is to use a latex condom every time you have sex, particularly if you have more than one sex partner. (If you use a lubricant, make sure it is water-based.) Dental dams can also be effective during oral sex. It’s a good idea to get checked for STDs. Don’t risk passing an infection to someone else. If you need more information or have not had a screening for STDs, call your doctor or the community health clinic and make an appointment now. Usually when we hear discussion about safe sex, it is geared toward young people, teenagers and others just beginning to explore their own sexuality. But we have the opportunity to continue exploring our sexuality throughout our lifetime. Medication for erectile dysfunction and creams and medications to relieve vaginal dryness mean that we can continue enjoying comfortable, mutually pleasing sexual experiences as long as we have the desire. But with that opportunity, comes responsibility. Barbara Lee is the author of Sacred Sex: Replacing the Marriage Ethic with a Sexual Ethic and Tension in the Tank: Embracing Interfaith Mysticism Without Leaving the Church. An ordained interfaith minister, Barbara has crafted the tools that lead to higher self-esteem, healthier relationships and a deeper respect for the many facets of sexuality. HOW TO CHOOSE A
FINANCIAL PLANNER
Petra Remy, MA ACS, CFP
Don’t put off dealing with your finances because you don’t have time to learn all you need to know. Instead, find a good financial advisor. Here’s how.
4. How do you know I am on track? What about the what-ifs (divorce, sell my company, give money to my children, etc.) for the short-, medium- and long-term?
Trusting and relating well are musts. Different kinds of advisors suit different clients. Investment managers whose expertise is in buying and selling stocks, create portfolios from that perspective. Wealth managers create financial plans by focussing on clients’ life stages and investing accordingly. Neither is better. What matters is what you need and that you feel comfortable. This concerns your hard-earned money and private details. Do you trust them? Are they approachable?
Work with an advisor only if you are comfortable with their answers.
Ask the advisor to explain any terms you don’t understand. Keep asking until the explanation makes sense to you. CFPs (Certified Financial Planners) must offer only recommendations that match the clients’ needs and wants, and must act in your best interest. You benefit from their experience and education as you develop your financial plan together. Here are four key questions for your meeting with a financial advisor. 1. How often are my financial needs reviewed? It should be, at least, yearly. 2. What do you do for your fees and what are they? Know what you are paying for and why. 3. What are your credentials? What courses/ conferences have you been to, and how recently? Experience plus – learn about the advisor’s education and certifications.
Closing considerations: • It takes time to build and maintain a financial plan. • Advisor’s recommendations should focus on you first then investments. • Ask to see a sample financial plan. Determine how comfortable you are with the level of the answers. • This should not be a corporate stepping stone – investment entrepreneurs, like myself, serve you for many years because we’re in it for the long run. Again, if you aren’t comfortable with your advisor, get a different one! Petra Remy, MA ACS CFP, is an Investment Advisor with Taylor Remy Brown Investment Group of CIBC Wood Gundy. The Ladybird’s Kitchen by Pam Robertson
For the
Love of
SOUP I love this time of year. Cool nights and brisk mornings make me think of my favourite sweaters, and warm comfort foods. One advantage of all this cooler weather is that it’s the beginning of soup season, one of my favourite cooking seasons of the year! On of my favourite memories is skipping school for an afternoon and walking over to Nana’s house, where she had a pot of homemade soup simmering. The smell hit you as soon as you walked in the door, and it’s a memory I can conjure up without any difficulty. In those days Nana often made chicken, turkey, or vegetable soup, but they were never the same twice as she tweaked quantities and aromatics to take advantage of what was available. As someone who likes to eat, one of the things I am very happy about is having watched Nana make soup and remembering a few key ideas: • If a vegetable isn’t crisp enough for salad, it’s still okay in the soup pot •The best soup needs a really good stock There’s no need to put a pot of soup on the stove and let it simmer all day for stock (although my favourites are done this way, when time allows). I tend to make sure I have commercial stock on hand, but make sure what you buy is a great quality, doesn’t have any MSG, and is low in salt.
I have a lot of “favourite” soups, stews, and chili recipes that I enjoy. Here’s one that is great for fall and winter, while the squash supply is high. This soup freezes really well in individual containers, which makes it easy to transport to work – just set it out to thaw on a corner of your desk through the morning, and heat it up in a large microwave safe measuring cup so it doesn’t boil over, or heat it in a small saucepan on the stove. Serve with a fresh crusty bun or some cornbread and people will be clamoring for seconds. Roasted Butternut Squash Soup
Makes 6 to 8 servings Roasting vegetables like squash makes for a much simpler soup prep than you might think. There’s no tricky peeling, and the roasting process makes for nicely concentrated flavours. This is a flavourful soup, not like the bland ones you find in the store. If you’re having a difficult time cutting the squash in half, poke some holes in it with a sharp knife and pop it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. It should cut easily once it is softened up a bit!
14 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I September • 2016
“If a vegetable isn’t crisp enough for salad, it’s still okay in the soup pot.”‘ Ingredients 2 medium butternut squash (about 4 pounds in total), halved lengthwise and seeds removed 1 head of garlic 1 tablespoon melted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large Granny Smith apple 1 medium yellow onion, diced 8 fresh sage leaves 2 sprigs of fresh thyme (leaves only) 3 cups low-sodium vegetable or chicken broth 2 cups water 1 ½ teaspoons salt (have some extra on hand to adjust taste) ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or to taste 1/3 hot pepper flakes (optional) 1/3 cup heavy cream (optional) Method 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and put the rack in the middle of the oven.
4. Put the soup pot on medium heat, and add two tablespoons of olive oil. Peel the onion and apple, dice into small pieces and add to the pot. Add the sage, thyme leaves, your measured salt and pepper, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 7 to 10 minutes. Remove the soup pot from the heat and set aside. 5. When squash is roasted (a fork will move through it easily) remove from the oven and rest it on a cooling rack until the squash is cool enough to handle. Use a large spoon to scoop the squash away from the peel and add the flesh to the soup pot with the sautéed onion and apple. 6. Add the broth, water, measured salt and pepper, and bring it to a boil over medium high heat. Reduce to medium low and simmer, stirring frequently and breaking up and large pieces of squash, for about 15 minutes to let the flavours come together. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cream if you are using it.
2. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Place the halves of squash with the cut side up on the baking sheet. Brush olive oil all over the inside of the squash halves. Season generously with salt and pepper (I like the Epicure roasted garlic salt for this). Roast until fork tender about 50 minutes to 1 hour.
7. This next step is totally optional but makes for the smooth texture I love in a squash soup. Use a blender to puree the soup in small batches, or use an immersion blender. Taste and season as needed, serve garnished with a sprig of chive, or sage, or some fresh shaved parmesan.
3. Cut the top off the head of garlic to expose the ends of the individual cloves. Spread a little olive oil on the exposed ends, and place the head in the pan with the squash. Let it roast until softened (1520 minutes). Using the spoon handle you can lift each clove of garlic from its skin and set the roasted garlic aside.

Life is just a phase by Laurel Vespi
If you want to be there, you have to be here If you are like most people, you spend a lot of time hanging out in a place that doesn’t really exist - the future. Given that the future by definition hasn’t happened yet, and that we don’t actually know what it will eventually look like when it arrives, it’s interesting how much time we devote to thinking about it. Future thinking comes in many forms – everything from planning what you are going to have for dinner to wondering why your kid is late to planning your retirement. It runs the gamut from hope to fear and left unchecked can consume a lot of our time. Future Thinking
Of course all future thinking is not bad. That’s how we plan and strategize for goals we want to accomplish. If we can’t visualize something, then it’s really hard to make it a reality. Most highly successful people, whether in business or sports or life in general, spend some time picturing the end result they want to achieve.
that allows us to entertain possibilities – to push our imagination past our comfort zone into the land of wildest dreams. Research even suggests that day dreaming helps your brain be healthier by enhancing working memory and creating new neuropathways. So yes it’s true that future thinking has its benefits. Worry
The problem is typically we spend far too much time hanging out in the future with unintended negative consequences. Likely the unhealthiest kind of future thinking comes in the form of worry. We all do it. We begin to think about the possible outcomes of some situation and then we start to play the “what if” game with ourselves. Just like a series of dominoes, each what if thought leads to another until we have imagined the worst possible scenario. Someone is a little late arriving and we end up thinking about car accidents and kidnappings.
Daydreaming is a future thinking activity 16 • Be Fabulous! e_Magazine I www.fabulousat50.com I September • 2016
“Too much thinking is actually the enemy of getting stuff done. There are
countless people who have all kinds of plans but never take action.”
Worry is actually one of the most unproductive things we can do with our time. Worry does nothing to change a situation - especially given that most of the things we worry about are completely out of our control. For those things where we can influence the outcome, it makes far more sense to worry less about what might happen and instead focus more on making choices that will make what we want to happen actually happen. Over-planning
The other thing that often occurs with future thinking is over-planning. We get excited about a goal and then lay out the entire plan only to find somewhere along that path things don’t go exactly as we had imagined. While we might be able to anticipate potential obstacles, we can’t predict the future. When our plans are interrupted, we often get discouraged and abandon them. Having a picture in your mind of where you are heading is important but it’s more productive to plan small steps and continually course correct as you go along. Procrastination
Too much thinking is actually the enemy of getting stuff done. There are countless people who have all kinds of plans but
never take action. Planning becomes the primary activity rather than implementation. We go on the hunt for more information and the perfect plan or system that will somehow make it easier to achieve our goals. Thinking about how we are going to do something becomes a way of procrastinating on actually doing something. Pause
So while the future doesn’t really exist, the present actually does. The only moment in which you have all the power to choose your attitude and actions is this one. When you find yourself engaging in future thinking, pause and ask yourself: Is this the best use of my time and energy in order to create what it is that I really want? When the answer is no, then focus on the choices available to you right now in this moment. That is how you end up down the road closer to where you want to be. Petra Remy Leading the way to empowering women and giving back.
What are you looking to doing/creating in this next half of your life? I am writing a book – it is in the very early, early stages – and it will tell stories of successful women who have looked financial ruin in the face and worked their way through to financial stability. My intent is to empower women to recognize that they are not alone. There are other persons not unlike themselves who have faced and won adversities. My goal is to extrapolate how they managed their financial future, both good and bad. I want to give half of the proceeds of the book to addressing human rights violations. It bothers me when others are abused, exploited or mistreated. If I saw it happening, I know I would step in. I am very protective – don’t be hurting my peeps. What would you consider to be your top three talents/skills? My top three talents/skills are: 1. Working with people and understanding them. 2. My creativity. Being able to look at things from a new perspective or to make
{Fabulous@50 Featured Member}
something new out of what is at hand. 3. Foresight; the ability to look ahead and make sure you address all aspects and recognize the possible outcomes. I am good at analyzing the whole picture. What ways do you prefer to give it back or pay it forward? I’m a connector and I like giving back by connecting people to each other, because I believe by connecting people we end up with a better, thriving and strong community. It is important to me to help empower others, either through sharing my story or by helping them build a network that supports and enhances their efforts. I want those around me to succeed. It is empowering to work together toward a common goal – that is success. What is your vision of great leadership? Value based leadership is great leadership. That is knowing when to follow and when to lead. This pretty much represents who I am. What matters most is doing the right thing and doing the best I can.

If you were to share one thing that made a difference in your life, what would it be? It’s not one thing that has made a difference. I would say all the challenges that I faced in my life have brought me to this place of success. One of those was going to university while facing a challenging divorce, suddenly being a single mom and having to juggle studies, child care, part-time work, all while in the emotional upheaval and financial devastation of a divorce. What is it in nature that feeds your soul? The beauty in nature feeds my soul. It brings me a sense of tranquility when I am facing challenges or successes. I love walking in the river valley because of the forest and the water. Watching the flow of the river and hearing the sound of the water – nature just speaks to me – it really gets to my soul.
Petra’s Favorites Favorite Color: : My favourite colour is purple – harmony. It feels as though I am looking at tranquility Flats or Stilettos: Flats, definitely. I can run or walk comfortably on my way to success. It’s hard to chase after your dreams and reach your goals when your feet hurt. Movie: Babette’s Feast; Life of Pi Book: Robert Munsch, Love You Forever. We all want to be loved forever, and want to believe that our love lasts beyond the bounds of time. Sweet Treat: Salty chocolates by far – Himalayan salty chocolates, mmmmm Vacation Destination: The world – I love seeing historical places and where people are friendly – and by history I don’t mean where wars were fought, I mean where people built their cultures from their day to day living. Martini/Wine: I choose martinis; you might think it is because they symbolize sophistication, but I like them for their diversity. Chocolatini – need I say more? Charitable Cause: : I am passionate about making our community a safe and thriving place, bringing together an eclectic group of people to address human rights violation. Let’s be part of the solution not the problem!?

Tea with Sue by Sue Paulson
Your Road Ahead “You are the future to believe in.” by Orest Andre 2016
Have you noticed now that you’re over 50, how different life is from our younger days? Some of us no longer have kids to raise; many spend time with grand kids. Some look after aging relatives. Some have lost spouses through death or divorce. This is a perfect time to pause and reflect about our remaining years. It’s a time to think more seriously about what comes next for us and plan key action steps. Once we’ve worked through menopause, it’s as if we have a new lease on life – there’s a zest and an energy that causes us to look at different possibilities and directions. (If you’re still struggling through menopause, take heart – life is better on the other side!) Single Again
At 54, I found myself single again after a 23 year marriage. As I worked through the grief process of that ending, I realized that rather than thinking my life was over, I now had the opportunity to create a new beginning – one that I could shape because there was just me! But…. I’d love to say it was easy - that my shift into the new was a breeze. Actually, it was messy – filled with doubts and missteps and the fear of winding up as a dotty old divorcee with six cats.
Part of me longed for a new partner to save me from growing old and lonely. That partner did come along, as did an adversity that I wasn’t sure I would live through. When both my new mate and the adversity disappeared, there I was, still standing. Humbled and wiser as I began to carve yet another new life, I discovered that what mattered most in life was what mattered to me. Twists and Turns
Just like the winding roads through the mountains, the highway of life has twists and turns and unexpected obstacles. Life can be filled with rain-soaked days that cause despair, but then the sun shines and our perspective changes. I began to see that I was the only one who could navigate the road ahead, and I was more than strong enough to do it. I needed to know what was important to me so I could make choices that fit the new life I was building. There is lots of talk about the need to re-invent oneself or one’s business. In my case that’s true. I just never imagined I would need to do it so frequently! Now I find that if I refuse to stubbornly cling to whatever old stuff no longer suits me, then there is space, time, and energy to embrace the new things I want to come next.

If you have come to a crossroads in your life, there are a few things to consider: • You need your attention. You are the life you’ve dreamed of – only you can chart the course that leads you forward (of course there will be help along the way, but it’s your show) • When you stop caring about what others think about you or your actions, then you can really think about you! (Plus all the others aren’t thinking about you anyway – they’re too busy thinking of themselves and what they want!) • If you don’t take charge of your own life, guaranteed someone else will. Trust me, you are strong enough and smart enough to decide what’s best for you. Typically, what’s best for you will be great for everyone else, too – funny how that works!) As we move into the abundance of fall, I
always feel a fresh surge of energy. I plan to use it to step forward into the next magnificent moment. What about you? It might help if we returned to leisurely sit-down dinners with home-cooked food, lovingly prepared – not just on Sundays, but for most days of the week. As a starting point, we can stop to think about our choices in celebration of our bodies – carrot sticks or chips, water or pop, an apple or ice cream. When we choose what our bodies love, we’re rewarded with good health, vibrancy, and energy. Now that’s food for thought! As an inspirational speaker and award-winning author, Sue Paulson inspires others to love their magnificence. Her third book, “Magnificent Misery – From Adversity to Ecstasy” is now available at Audrey’s and Ascendant Books in Edmonton or through Amazon. To book Sue, visit: www.suepaulson.com
