Welcome back! Summer holidays can be a little daunting for us parents can’t they? Depending upon your school, 6 or 7 weeks of time with your little darlings sounds a long time. Let's take a step back for a moment, shall we? Not every minute of each day must be filled. Remember us parents need a little relaxation time too. Perhaps draw up a wish list from everyone in the family and then slim these down depending on time, budgets, and energy. Introduce ideas that involve friends, sleep overs, local exploring and of course other family members. Have a few set days and then some more casual ones. Watching the pennies like most families will be doing means that we will have to get our creative thinking caps on. Rainy days are excellent for these. Lego competitions, making your own inside summer den or putting on a show are all ideas we have used as a family. Alternatively, try exploring a local town. Could this be the summer of the dinosaur! Hamerton has their new dinosaur train ride, Peterborough Cathedral the T. Rex: The Killer Question exhibition and Dinosaur World is coming to the Alive Corn Exchange in Kings Lynn. Plus, do not miss our dinosaur book competitions.

School News Northborough School Scoops Eco Awards Green minded pupils at Northborough Primary School have won two environmental awards for their eco projects.
Royalty at Brington
They have been working with PECT (Peterborough Environment City Trust) to develop their outdoor space and were invited to the PECT ECO Awards.
Pupils, pigs and an electric car greeted a royal visitor to a Huntingdonshire school recently. Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester visited Brington C of E Primary School to celebrate the school's half century, seeing what life is like inside and outside the classroom for the pupils. The visit had been delayed due to the pandemic but The Duchess finally got to tour the school and see Brington's older children driving an electric car constructed by the school for their science project. The school pigs, Pansy and Peaches, were introduced as The Duchess heard about how they were looked after by the younger pupils as part of the school's farming topic. The children also asked Her Royal Highness to plant a commemorative tree in the Forest School area. ‘It's been a really special day and The Duchess was so nice. We'll take really good care of this tree,’ said Katie, aged 6. The visit also included dropping in on a ukulele lesson, meeting children, their teachers and a tour of the school.
Students have been creating a nature corridor across their field by planting 180 trees, making bird and bat boxes for their extensive orchard area and have even been growing produce to eat with their lunch. They continue to focus on sustainability and finding ways to make sure they’re doing all they can to support the environment. Six of their Planet Protectors, pupils Amelie, Ayla, Megan, Emma, Elicia and Grace all went along to the awards. Their efforts were rewarded with the Sponsors’ Award for their work in school, and the Host's Award for the enthusiasm of the children who attended. Children at Northborough have also been busy with the Foundation Class holding their annual Ugly Bug Ball. They enjoyed the same feast as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and released butterflies they’ve raised in class. Year 1 had a Superhero day dressing in some incredible outfits, while Year 2 had a visit from the Raptor Foundation in conjunction with their topic about nocturnal animals.

Dive into history at Cromwell Museum: Looking for a fun and educational trip? The Cromwell Museum offers a fascinating look at the life and legacy of Oliver Cromwell through online and in-person workshops. Children will love trying on armour and weaponry to become a civil war soldier while discovering how Cromwell rose from humble origins in Huntingdonshire to shape our history. There’s a range of activities including on-site workshops to see items that Cromwell himself had and used in his life. There are also virtual workshops which bring the Museum to your own classroom whenever you like, without the hassle and cost of a coach trip. Loan boxes allow pupils to see real and replica pieces of history in the classroom. They include fun activities based around the curriculum with a hands-on approach to learning and can be booked with an online session to make lessons more exciting. As Cromwell was born in Huntingdon and lived in St. Ives and Ely, a visit to the Museum is perfect for a local history study. Choose a session about Cromwell, the causes of the civil wars, life in the 17th century, or the history of democracy in the UK. Summer Time Fun Outdoor Family Entertainment at Peterborough Cathedral
Do you know your Deinonychus from your Ankylosaurus?
From rip-roaringly funny plays to swashbuckling drama and toe-tapping family musicals, this year’s Live in the Cloisters series at Peterborough Cathedral promises a funpacked programme.
These are just two of the many dinosaur models that will be at Peterborough Cathedral from 18 July to 3 September as part of the Natural History Museum’s touring exhibition, T.rex: The Killer Question.
These outdoor family shows from professional theatre companies take place in the beautiful Cathedral Cloisters: a sheltered grassy lawn surrounded by the ancient walls. The programme includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book, Pygmalion and The Three Musketeers. So pack yourselves a picnic, take a deckchair or a blanket and settle down for some great entertainment. Tickets are available via www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/live-cloisters-22.aspx
The question is, was T.rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? You’ll be able to compare the mighty T.rex with other dinosaurs. The Ankylosaurs was a plant-eating herbivore rather than a meat-eater and the shape of its body is adapted to this. The Deinonychus was both plant-eating and carnivorous, so it looks a bit more like a T.rex. Many of the models in the exhibition are animatronic, so will be roaring and moving as you look around. A full-size T.rex skeleton is also part of the display within the 900-year-old cathedral. Snap up your tickets! Entry to the exhibition is by timed ticket and the prices are £6 for children, £8 for adults or £25 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children or 1 adult and up to 4 children). They are on sale via www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/t.rex
Take your Family to Nene Park this Summer There’s no shortage of events and activities to keep the whole family entertained over the summer months at Nene Park. From regular boat trips, a great choice of paddlesports and cycle hire (See page 12 for discout code) to activities such as pond dipping, bug hunting, climbing, archery or nature walks. It’s good to get the family enjoying some outdoor fun and Nene Park is the perfect place with plenty to keep everyone amused all day long. You could even camp on site for a mini staycation on the campsite or one of the new bell tents. The ever-popular Pay and Play watersports hire activities include swan pedalos and row boats, stand up paddle boards, kayaks and canoes, dinghies and windsurfing. Book online to avoid the queues on busy days.
The electric boat trips are great fun and operate dally during the holidays but there are some specially themed ones with a Wildlife Eco Boat trip on 10 August and a History Boat Trip on Saturday 9 July. New summer holiday trails start on 25 July, 5 August and 19 August with a new trail every two weeks throughout the summer holidays. Just collect a trail sheet from the Visitor Centre and then hunt for questions as you walk around Ferry Meadows. Then head back to claim your prize to grow at home. How about learning something new like archery? Pay and Play Archery sessions will run throughout the day on 26 July, 11 August and 25 August from 11am-4pm. Just pop down and give it a try on Oak Meadow close to Nene Outdoors. For the more adventurous the climbing wall will be ready to be conquered on 4 August and 30 August from 11am-4pm. Are you brave enough to reach the top?
To get them into the spirit of the great outdoors there are also various Bushcraft sessions during August to teach the kids everything from using tools to lighting fires and shelter building. To see everything Nene Park has to offer this summer visit www.nenepark.org.uk

Delightful Ely is amongst the smallest cities in Britain with the shortest name, yet has one of the largest cathedrals and a wealth of fascinating attractions including a very pretty waterfront and riverside park. Ely gets its name from the Isle of Eels when it was surrounded by water brimming with eels. You can find out more about the history of Ely and its eel connections by taking the Eel Trail, a waymarked walk around the city, past pieces of public art depicting the life story of the humble eel. The route takes you past an array of shops, art galleries and cafés, through the monastic quarter with its medieval buildings and down to the picturesque waterside. With its 900 years of history, the cathedral is where everyone heads for. Known as the ‘Ship of the Fens’ because it can be seen from such long distances, it’s acknowledged as one of the most significant cathedrals in Europe. It is the only UK building to be listed as one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the Middle Ages’. It has the largest Lady Chapel of any
UK cathedral as well as having one of the finest collections of medieval monastic buildings still in daily use. You can take a tour of the unique 14th century octagonal lantern tower or climb the 288 steps to the top of the West Tower for great views of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Ely Cathedral has also become a prominent location for films such as The King’s Speech and The Crown. Don’t miss the Stained Glass Museum in the upper level of the cathedral with its national collection of stained glass from medieval to modern. The newest attraction is a 13-metre table created from a 5000-year-old black oak tree found preserved in a nearby field in 2012. Over 10 years, a team of privately funded carpenters transformed the trunk into a stunning piece of craftsmanship.
A short walk away is the newly renovated Ely Museum which uses interactive displays to describe the landscape of the fens and the lives of the people who live there. Then there’s Oliver Cromwell’s House, home of the city’s best known former resident. The building provides a snapshot of how Cromwell and his family would have lived during their 10 years in Ely from 1636. It gives a fascinating insight into life in the 17th century. This handsome building also houses the helpful tourist office full of handy leaflets. If you head down through the Jubilee Gardens to the riverside you can watch the boat traffic and perhaps take a river trip along the Ouse on the Liberty Belle, explore the huge antiques warehouse or enjoy a snack or lunch at one of the various eating establishments by the waterfront. All in all it’s a grand day out, well worth a visit.

Bounce over to Peterborough for
INFLATABLE FUN!
Family Trips
If you’re looking for somewhere for the kids to burn off some energy over the holidays, why not take them somewhere they can bounce to their heart’s content Our roving writer Jo headed to Inflata Nation in Peterborough for Term Times…
Keeping the family entertained during long journeys. Whether you’re heading off in the car, on the train or a plane this summer, to avoid those ‘are we there yet’ cries from the kids, Term Times shares some tips to keep them entertained during the trip.
car Car Journeys To make road trips run smoothly invest in a back seat car organiser to keep toys, drinks and snacks within easy reach. Download an audiobook to play via the car’s stereo to keep the kids entertained or play some classic car games spotting different vehicles, colours and number plates. It's a good idea to download music to play through the car’s stereo to avoid rows over changing the radio station and take a fully charged tablet so they can watch downloaded shows or play games. A lap tray is also great for drawing and activities and of course snacks.
TRAIN Train Journeys Book a seat at a table if you can so younger kids can do some colouring and fill a Trunki suitcase with fun activities for the train and some favourite toys. They’re also handy if there’s no seat available. The best thing about trains is you’re not restricted to your seat, so have a walk with your child to explore and visit the café for a snack. Activity books full of crosswords, word searches and spot the difference are ideal for older children and take a charger for their electronics so they don’t lose battery on the long journey. On the Eurostar, they now have Wi-Fi throughout the carriage, so connect to Prime Kids or Netflix to watch shows on the go.
plane Plane Journeys Pass the time on a lengthy flight with a craft activity or something to make, you can get some great mini packs. Book a window seat if you can - you'll be surprised how fascinated they are with the view. Magazines full of stories, activities and colouring will keep them entertained for ages. Take a pair of headphones for the older ones so they can plug into the screen on the flight to watch a new movie, or even play on their switch or tablet. A small Lego set is a great way to keep them busy building it during the trip. A card game is a fun activity the whole family can get involved in. You can buy a Monopoly or Cluedo card game too.
Inflata Nation is an indoor inflatable theme park located on the Peterborough One Retail Park and is a fun and unique experience that’s great for all the family. Promising to offer something a bit different, I went along with the children to put their range of fun-filled activities to the test. There is a great choice of inflatable slides with four giant slides that really take your breath away and the kids went on several times. You can also attempt to get across some giant balls which many adults were giving a go. The obstacle course is a lot of fun for the kids to race against their friends. There is plenty of space in the ball pit with slides that take you straight into the brightly coloured balls. We even gave the knockout podium a go which is fun for all ages to play against their friends. The inflatable theme park offers hourly sessions which do wear you out. There is an under 4’s area with some smaller activities and even a couple of slides which will keep the little ones happy. The on-site café offers a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks for when you need a break in-between your sessions. Offering something different from the traditional soft play and trampolines park, Inflata Nation is a great hit with primary-school children and beyond. GOOD RUNNING EVENTS PROMOTION
Welcome return for the Great Eastern Run Get your trainers at the ready as the Great Eastern Run is set to make a welcome return to Peterborough this October and has renewed its connections with local charities under new organisers.
A popular fixture in the race calendar now in its 40th anniversary year, The Half Marathon and 5K Fun Run now organised by Good Running Events, returns on Sunday 16 October. It will see leading club athletes and charity fun runners race through the streets of Peterborough. Stamford based charity Anna’s Hope, which supports children and young people with brain tumours, will be the partner for the 5K Fun Run. Co-founder of Anna’s Hope, Carole Hughes, is hoping local schools will support them. 'Over the years Anna’s Hope has been proud to support the 5K Fun Run and we are looking forward once again to welcoming runners from
the local community including families, friends, schools, clubs and local businesses to challenge themselves, have fun and if they can, raise funds for charities and good causes.' The Fun Run is ideal for families and school groups to take part in with many choosing to don fancy dress or fairy wings for Anna’s Hope, the charity’s emblem. Children must be aged 4 years or older to join the 5K Fun Run (all children aged 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult) and it’s £10.90 for a child to enter. The event has partnered with Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice and there are race places
available for runners who would like to be part of Team Sue Ryder, but there’s the chance to raise funds for other charities too. Entrants must be aged 17 and over and it’s £35 for unaffiliated runners. Whether you’re new to the event or a seasoned runner seeking a personal best, the fast, flat route on closed roads is perfect. Organisers expect to see more runners than ever before take part with thousands racing and thousands more lining the streets to cheer them on. The event will kick off at the Embankment with the Anna’s Hope 5K Fun Run, before the Wheelchair Half Marathon and Half Marathon.
Entries are now open for all distances within the Great Eastern Run on 16 October – and runners can register via www.greateasternrun.co.uk
