Pupils, pigs and an electric car greeted a royal visitor to a Huntingdonshire school recently. Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester visited Brington C of E Primary School to celebrate the school's half century, seeing what life is like inside and outside the classroom for the pupils. The visit had been delayed due to the pandemic but The Duchess finally got to tour the school and see Brington's older children driving an electric car constructed by the school for their science project. The school pigs, Pansy and Peaches, were introduced as The Duchess heard about how they were looked after by the younger pupils as part of the school's farming topic. The children also asked Her Royal Highness to plant a commemorative tree in the Forest School area. ‘It's been a really special day and The Duchess was so nice. We'll take really good care of this tree,’ said Katie, aged 6. The visit also included dropping in on a ukulele lesson, meeting children, their teachers and a tour of the school.
Students have been creating a nature corridor across their field by planting 180 trees, making bird and bat boxes for their extensive orchard area and have even been growing produce to eat with their lunch. They continue to focus on sustainability and finding ways to make sure they’re doing all they can to support the environment. Six of their Planet Protectors, pupils Amelie, Ayla, Megan, Emma, Elicia and Grace all went along to the awards. Their efforts were rewarded with the Sponsors’ Award for their work in school, and the Host's Award for the enthusiasm of the children who attended. Children at Northborough have also been busy with the Foundation Class holding their annual Ugly Bug Ball. They enjoyed the same feast as The Very Hungry Caterpillar and released butterflies they’ve raised in class. Year 1 had a Superhero day dressing in some incredible outfits, while Year 2 had a visit from the Raptor Foundation in conjunction with their topic about nocturnal animals.
