From 3 to 6 May, Nimco was once more one of the companies of the list of exhibitors of OT World 2016, in Leipzig.

The International Trade Show and World Congress for Technical Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation and Compression Therapy is the world biggest, most international and most important fair. It is held at the Leipziger Messe, on an area of 10.000 square metres of exhibition with room for 542 exhibitors and 330 speakers.

This year, the show was visited by 21.300 people from 86 countries. The four days of fair were filled with shows, events, lectures and forums, in some NM4Y, also participated.

One of the highlights of this fair was the NM4Y booth and the presentation of the ‘Shoe of the Future’. This prototype is a result of a collaboration between our company, Slem and the student Kat Scott.

SLEM is an international innovation and education institute for footwear. SLEM offers a master program in footwear innovation and several short courses;

consults for companies and organizes SLEMinars on innovative topics. Katherine Scott, a young and experienced Apparel Designer and Innovation Researcher, is attending the master program in footwear innovation, at SLEM and is being sponsored by NM4Y. The ‘Shoe of the Future’ is a prototype and exercise, but we know that it will be the future trends in our industry. More on the shoe of the future will follow on page 2.

This type of collaboration is not at all new.

NM4Y is very orientated to collaborate with schools and institutes in order to fill the gap between studies, real life practice, corporate world and the market. Every spring, for the last 3 years, we’ve been hosting a field trip / training session from Fontys, School of Applied Sciences. The groups of students that are able to visit the NM4Y factory in Portugal, and attend the quick workshops, always express and share how important this experience is for them now that they are finishing their degree and starting to work.

And the NiMO App Diabetes is a growing disease. It is now part of the life of 422 million people in the world.

Being a diabetic may affect your life quality in many ways, may damage your heart, kidneys, sight and your limbs and it can lead, in severe cases, to amputation. A good diet and being able to stay mobile decreases the risk to get diabetes type 2.

But, what if your shoes helped you move?

What if they motivated you? What if at the same time they had sensors to give you feedback on your physical condition? What if the shoes could evolve, and change colours and features?

This is the context and the inspiration behind the development of the shoe of the future.

‘The Shoe of the Future’ is an answer to all of the above questions because: - the upper is made of a breathable mesh; - the conductive fabric can change colours; - it is built using minimal number of seams; - the soles are 3D printed, they have an auxetic structure for optimal shock absorption and less counter pressure.

For now, this project is an exercise that resulted in a prototype, but NM4Y is sure that this is the future of shoes. We are also sure that the future wears NM4Y! A thank you note to Katherine Scott, a professional with an international educational background currently attending SLEM, who has derived her love for 3D printing from both technology and custom-made fashion.

Thank you also to Yassine Salihine, Senior Consultant, and Nicoline van Enter, the Creative Director of SLEM, as they played a big part in this project. Without them this hardly could be developed in the record time of 6 weeks.

> Nimco is leader in the Industry 4.0 revolution Olav Toornend - COO NM4Y Olav Toornend, COO of Nimco, was invited by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Portugal to participate in the think tank Industry 4.0. As one of the only foreign entrepreneurs he has attended several meetings and in September the input of all contributors will be published. Industry 4.0 is an important revolution in the field of manufacturing and it is high on the agenda of Portugal.

What is the Industry 4.0?

All the diverse materials create a perfect balance between support and softness.

The ‘Shoe of the Future’, comes with an APP, NiMO The Nimco Intelligent Mobility Optimizer.

The shoe has sensors for monitoring hydration, blood pressure, weight, heart rate/pulse, heat and calorie spending. It can also include a GPS for tracking location and to advise you to take the best route so you will not pass fast food restaurants and to get the best exercise.

The shoe of the future evolves with you and your physical condition. As you get more fit, a ’reward’ system is released, you can have more features, change colours, get discounts and finally and most important, you may in the future get the health insurance companies to realize they lower your insurance fee.

There are 4 Industrial Revolutions: Industry 1.0: invention of the steam engine: larger production Industry 2.0: invention electric driven machines and light bulb: mass production Industry 3.0: invention internet: enormous distribution of data Industry 4.0: processing data using the cloud, mobile internet, participation of consumers.

What means Industry 4.0 for Nimco?

“Industry 4.0 stands for a combination of several issues Nimco is working on for years now. For instance, we use the growing power of mobile internet. Our partners and ourselves can have influence on the manufacturing process from a distance. The orders can send to us through internet and in Portugal this digital data can be processed so the manufacturing process can be planned automatically. Also listening to our partners and clients wishes gives us the opportunity to adjust the manufacturing process constantly. Above that we train our employers so they can work on several departments so they are flexible employers which leads to a flexible manufacturing process. The introduction of the Lean Management enables our employers, among other things, to repair any possible faults quickly and to introduce permanent adjustments in order to develop the manufacturing process constantly. Working in the cloud gives us the opportunity to exchange big data. This enables us to exchange, for instance, enormous files for the production of 3D prints, which can be used for suitable appliances in the manufacturing process. In 2017 Nimco will make the first 3D printed shoe, this project is connected to the project Shoe of the Future. It is a good example of run ahead of the future and that is what we love to do at Nimco.”

Industrial revolutions are always about producing quicker. What does this mean for Nimco in Industry 4.0?

“We want to be able to react quicker on the variable streams of orders. That benefits our clients. Shortening the delivery process benefits us all. Industry 4.0 can help us to achieve this. We can consolidate our competition with the Middle-East if we can produce more quicker with the guaranty that our products are made according to European norms and values in the field of manufacturing process, products and conditions of employment. Those are the demands of the European market. At Nimco we use mostly European leather that is produced according to European standards. Our clients and partners value this more and more and at Nimco we do this also. That is also one of the issues of Industry 4.0. Another benefit of using and supplying local manufactured products is that the products have a shorter delivery time. At the end our clients and partners are the real winners.”

Do partners and clients of Nimco have to invest in Industrie 4.0?

“We would like to guide our partners and clients into the future. That is the only way we can adjust to and keep up with all the developments in our line of business and to profit from it. There will be made investments in software and we will do our utmost to get this done in the future. Now we are in a revolution that brings us a lot of possibilities and Nimco will do anything to keep up with the newest developments and to be a parts of this. Now that Nimco is a discussion partner of the Ministery of Economic Affairs in Portugal it will give us a possibility to run ahead. And in this revolution being a leader is essential to take our line of business to a higher level.”
