Stephanie Clovechok CEO OF DISCOVER SASKATOON
Welcome to Saskatoon!
No matter where your journey begins, Saskatoon will transform you and leave you with a lasting impression. This is Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Métis. A vibrant urban centre on the doorstep of aweinspiring natural wonder. Where contemporary culture thrives alongside Indigenous history 11,000 years in the making. Here, you’ll find kinship and connection, share in the stories of the land, and reawaken your sense of wonder under living skies. Let this guide be your compass as you discover what makes Saskatoon a place full of endless possibilities.
As we celebrate the present, we honor the past. This land, rich with history, tells the stories of Indigenous peoples who have provided their stewardship for thousands of years. We offer our gratitude to the original keepers of this land and remain committed to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action, the MMIW2S Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). To visit Saskatoon is to embrace and understand the deep-rooted narratives that shape our shared journey forward.
On the edge of nature, nestled in the heart of the breathtaking Meewasin Valley, Saskatoon offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of winding river trails, lush green spaces, and awe-inspiring prairie landscapes. With over 80kms of urban parkway, that will soon become a National Urban Park, I proudly invite you to connect with the land, and yourself here.
Saskatoon’s arts & culture scene pulses with the same vibrant energy as our ever-changing prairie sky. As you stroll along the winding South Saskatchewan River, take a moment to visit the Remai Modern and experience the world’s largest collection of Picasso linocuts— iconic symbols of our city’s commitment to preserving and celebrating global art. Dive into the harmonious sounds of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra or catch an unforgettable performance by Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan, showcasing our city’s passion for live arts. After soaking in the rich cultural landscape, get ready to explore Saskatoon’s world class culinary offerings, where innovation and history blend seamlessly.
Saskatoon’s culinary scene invites you to savor a fusion of flavors where Indigenous tradition meets modern artistry. Seasonal farm-to-table creations showcase the finest prairie-grown ingredients, turning every meal into a tribute to the region’s agricultural heritage. Crafted by some of Canada’s most talented chefs, each dish tells a story of passion and connection to the land.
Saskatoon is a city where sports thrive, from professional teams like the Saskatchewan Rattlers (CEBL) and Saskatchewan Rush (NLL) to junior teams like the Saskatoon Blades (WHL) and Saskatoon Berries (WCBL). Whether at SaskTel Centre or local events, the energy is contagious. The annual YXE Urban Games kicking off in July, you can expect a fusion of competitive urban sports, urban art, music and cultural exhibitions that will captivate your senses.
Saskatoon is a center for knowledge, research, and innovation, with the University of Saskatchewan at its core. Playing a key role in developing home grown talent and driving groundbreaking discoveries, the University embodies the city’s leadership in biotechnology, and life sciences. Home to the some of the most advanced research facilities in Canada, the campus invites you to explore it’s rich heritage, cutting edge achievements, and vibrant academic community.
We are proud of the strong partnerships that make Saskatoon an exceptional destination. Our SDMH hotel partners provide a welcoming experience, while local community members offer unique cultural experiences that bring the city to life. SASKATOON TRIBAL COUNCIL CHIEF
Tansi,
On behalf of the seven member nations that make up the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC), I would like to welcome you to Saskatoon.
Saskatoon is part of Treaty 6 Territory. These lands have a rich history, with significant contributions from First Nations peoples. Our people have called this region home since time immemorial; in the spirit of reconciliation, we invite you to take in everything Saskatoon has to offer. From the natural beauty of the South Saskatchewan River to our many festivals, including our yearly Pow Wow, you are surrounded by welcoming people, places, and experiences.
As we begin to heal towards the future, we First Nations people want to open the discussion to all when it comes to reconciliation. During your time here, STC hopes your experience in Saskatoon is enjoyable, informative, and inspires you to keep coming back.
Lyndon J. Linklater, a traditional knowledge keeper and storyteller in Treaty 6 territory, was able to meet and share stories with us and convey the importance of good relations.
After the offering of tobacco, which is a traditional shared way to communicate respect and care to Indigenous elders/ knowledge keepers, we began with the history of Saskatoon.
“Storytelling is a way to connect and build relationships.”
Saskatoon, a name derived from the Cree word for the saskatoon berry, misâskwatômin, was established in 1883 by a temperance group from Ontario who were looking to establish a dry community. When visiting the Whitecap Dakota First Nations (historically known as Moose Woods First Nation), Linklater remembers this story of John Lake, the leader of that temperance group. In the late 19th century, John Lake consulted with the Dakota people in the area, choosing his settlement on the Advice of Chief WápahaSká (Chief White Cap).
This settlement is now the Saskatoon neighbourhood of Nutana, on the east side of the South Saskatchewan River. Saskatoon is now a flourishing city with a young and vibrant population – for Linklater, the story reflects the positive outcomes of developing good relationships and interconnected communities. For him, this story reflected the importance of developing good relations. When we acknowledge and understand our shared histories, both positive and harmful, we can build new interconnected relationships that enrich the present and serve the future.
“We have to understand and learn about the past so that we can understand the present to plan for the future”
When you visit Saskatoon, engaging in Indigenous culture builds a strong community linked by stories. Whether you immerse yourself in the culture at the world’s longest ongoing archaeological dig site, stay at a nationally recognized Indigenous owned resort, or spend the day on the battlegrounds of the Métis Resistance, discovering Saskatoon means immersing yourself in these vibrant cultures. With no shortage of experiences, you and your family can be immersed in the rich landscape, heritage, and future of Treaty 6.
Did you know?
Saskatoon is a city of discovery. Here’s a taste of our history, heritage, and culture:
• The City of Saskatoon was established in 1883 on Treaty Six Territory stewarded by the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Salteaux, and Nakota Sioux. It is also home to many Métis settlements.
• The name Saskatoon comes from the Cree word Misâskwatôminihk which means “at the place of many Saskatoon berries” (a berry we highly recommend taste testing).
• With one of the highest number of restaurants per capita in Canada, we are a foodie’s dream. Our culinary scene has received national and international recognition.
• Saskatoon is home to the largest collection of Picasso linocuts. Find them at Remai Modern, a world-class museum for modern and contemporary art.
• Saskatchewan is the only province in Canada that doesn’t observe Daylight Savings Time. Saskatoon’s local time zone is Central Standard Time (CST).
• Speaking of daylight: Saskatoon is one of the country’s sunniest spots, with more than 2,300 hours of beautiful, bright sunshine throughout the year.
• Saskatoon has four sister cities: Cologne (Germany), Tampere (Finland), Shijiazhuang (China), and Umeå (Sweden). We keep good company!
Prepare for fun
As a four-season city, we invite you to embrace the weather with us. With temperatures dipping as low as -40°C in the winter and rising as high as +35°C in the summer, each season brings new ways to go #Saskatooning.
Make sure you’re packed for fun by adding these essentials to your suitcase:
Beach essentials to soak up the sun along the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.
Comfortable shoes for shopping Saskatoon’s Broadway, Riversdale, and Downtown districts.
A light raincoat and umbrella in case you get caught in a signature Saskatchewan thunderstorm. (Taking shelter inside one of our many critically acclaimed restaurants is a good idea, too).
Water-resistant boots and a thick pair of socks for snowshoeing at Wanuskewin Heritage Park.
A warm, windproof coat to fend off the windchill.
Layers! From a woolly base layer to a warm coat, mitts and, of course, a toque, the more layers you have the longer you can spend exploring our winter wonderland.
Whether you’re here for business or leisure, make our Discover Saskatoon Visitor Centre your first stop. You’ll find us in the heart of downtown at #100-145 First Avenue North.
Pow Wows
Indigenous experiences
We all have a role to play in truth and reconciliation. The history of this land and the peoples who steward it is a key part of what makes Saskatoon a city of diversity, discovery, and culture.
Through the many Indigenous experiences available to locals and visitors alike, we hope you come away with kinship, connection, and a deepened understanding and appreciation of Indigenous peoples and possibilities.
Remai Modern
Remai Modern joins contemporary and traditional Indigenous art practices, telling Indigenous stories through art and community outreach. Check out the museum’s website for a list of exhibitions, films, tours, and other programming.
Wanuskewin Heritage Park
Home to Canada’s longest running archaeological dig, Wanuskewin is a UNESCO-shortlisted site and sacred gathering place with more than 6,400 years of Plains Cree history. Wander through the facility’s art galleries, take in a live dance performance, shop Indigenous-made goods, and savour Indigenous flavours. If you can’t make it out to the park, explore their offsite gift shop nestled in the heart of the Broadway District.
Pow wows are held throughout the year and are a vibrant celebration of Indigenous culture. If you’re attending a pow wow (many are open to the public), be a mindful participant: respect the opening prayer ceremony and the unique cultural traditions of each nation, dress modestly, ask before taking photos, respect the dancer regalia, support Indigenous vendors and artisans, and do not bring drugs or alcohol. If you’d like to ask questions of dancers or elders, offering tobacco as a gift is a sign of respect.
Dakota Dunes Resort
Located on traditional Whitecap Dakota Unceded Territory, this gorgeous, modern resort features views of the rolling prairies. Within an hour from Saskatoon’s city centre, it’s the perfect place to relax, rejuvenate, and reconnect. Dakota Dunes Resort is known for year-round outdoor adventures, luxurious amenities, and memorable Indigenous cultural experiences.
An hour north of Saskatoon is where you’ll find Batoche, a cultural site honouring the beauty and resilience of Métis people and culture. Home to the last battle of the Northwest Resistance of 1885, travel back in time on one of the site’s handson experiences highlighting Métis life in the late 19th century. The site is also a tribute to the legacy of Louis Riel and other members of the resistance.
