Carrington Chimney Centenary

This year marks the centenary of the well-known Katoomba landmark, the 120 ft tall Carrington Chimney, and the power-house at the back of the Carrington. The power station at the rear of the Carrington Hotel was built in 1910 by Dorman Long, a major steel producer based in Middlesbrough, North East England. It provided the first electricity supply not only to the Carrington Hotel but also to Katoomba and other Blue Mountains towns. Electricity supply to the Blue Mountains area was taken over by local councils in April 1925. The power house equipment was removed, except The keystone of the arch was carved from sandstone on site to commemorate the 1910 – 2010 centenary of this building. for the boiler which was Photo: C Butcher, 2010

St HIlda’s Winter Magic Once again St Hilda’s Anglican church in Katoomba will have a full program at this year’s Winter Magic festival. Some may wonder ‘Why is a church involving itself with magic?’ But the minister, Ray Robinson says ‘We like to celebrate what CS Lewis called the ‘deeper magic’ of how God runs the world, his power to make and sustain all the amazing things we take for granted in creation.’ The church is putting on a quality program of music and children’s activities throughout the day and it’s all free. Rev Robinson is animated about this; ‘Many people see the day as a chance to make
money, but God has freely given us so much we want to take the chance to freely give to others.” Last year, in a joint project the SES wrapped the church tower like a gift with a gift tag saying ‘To our Community with Love’ when asked what he might be doing this year, Rev Robinson is coy: ‘You’ll have to come along and find out’.

KOORI students at Katoomba North joined in a video conference with our sister school, Dubbo North Public School and chatted to students in years 4-5. About twenty of our KOORI students were joined by Aunty Carol Cooper, and teachers Mrs Murrell, Ms Abela and Ms Hull, and using our library interactive whiteboard were able to chat to students about our school and where we live. In return, they received information from Dubbo North about their rural lifestyle and the differences in their environment. Two screens were in use which gave our students the ability to see students at Dubbo North but also to see themselves and what they looked like. Students, as a follow up, will be writing to e-pals via our
school email and include photographs of our school and the surrounding area and information about the activities that we run in the school.

What Would Happen to Your Family if You Had Died Yesterday? What would be the financial outcome for your partner? Your children? What if you were injured or sick? How long could you live with no income? Most people think about these things but do little about it. Figures show that only four in ten families with dependent children have enough insurance cover to last longer than one year1 and only 31% of people have Income Protection Insurance2. Of these, many would be covered for only two years. You can reduce potential financial hardship for yourself and your family by obtaining Personal Risk Insurance. Insurance can cover your life, your partner’s life, sickness or injury (Income Protection), disability and even certain medical conditions (Trauma Insurance). One of the main purposes of insurance is to provide a level of income to the insured or their family to allow them to continue their lifestyle without additional financial suffering. Many people will also choose a level of cover to allow them to clear their debts. A Financial Planner can help you select the level of insurance cover that best suits your personal or business needs. At Evolution Wealth we can assist with Business Insurance, Self Managed Superannuation and Superannuation, Retirement Planning and Investments. 1 2

CWA News Leura CWA was represented very well at the AGM by Eva Cole, the Cultural Officer and Rosemary French, who stood in for Oohnah Davidson, as she was unable to attend. The guest speaker at the Conference this year was Christine Weston, the 2010 NSW Woman of the year. She is good example of how much the members of the CWA contribute to our communities. Close to home, the Leura CWA hall is fully booked throughout the week and all the profit goes to charities, half to those nominated by Head Office and half to help local charities in our surrounding district. At the Conference each, the member of the CWA decide which Health Research fund they would like to support and the Leura Ladies voted for Macular Degeneration. This year, there are five items in the Cooking going to the State Finals, and the Leura CWA President, Kerry Owers, will be on the Handicraft Exhibition Stand. This month, there will be a lady speaking to us from the Crisis Centre on our next Cultural Day. Last handicraft day, we made dolls from buttons, and the next handicraft day we will be either doing Wool Embroidery or Hardanger work. The green needed attention but is being improved with the excellent help of Rob Johnson, the greenkeeper from Blackheath Golf Club Croquet is a great game for younger players as there is plenty of skill required and tactics to learn at competition level. Talking Birds - Goshawks It was Mate, the pet Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, who gave the alarm. I rushed out and on the roof of my WIRES aviary trying to reach the King Parrots inside was a large white raptor. It was a female Grey Goshawk, about the size of Mate. She flew off quickly, and although I searched, I never saw her again. Grey Goshawks come in two colour morphs, grey and white, and live in tall forests along the north and east coasts. They are uncommon in the north, more common in southern Australia. Usually a secretive and solitary bird, they can be very hard to see. Mammals, such as ringtail possums or even rabbits, birds and reptiles, form their main diet. In fact, they will eat anything they can catch. The white morph birds have been known to fly with flocks of cockatoos, using them as camouflage while hunting. A few days later the alarm calls sounded again, but, this time, it was a Brown Goshawk, an immaculate adult female, sitting on top of the King Parrots’ aviary. She was very reluctant to leave, but, after posing for several www.theecho.net.au
photos, she finally flew off. Over the next few weeks she came back regularly, which meant the King Parrots could not be released in case they ended up on the menu! Brown Goshawks are bird hunters. They skulk in the foliage and dash out when they see a suitable prey item. Of course they don’t always make a kill. More often than not, the hunted lives for another day. It is usually the young and inexperienced, the weak, or the old that get caught. I once saw a Brown Goshawk riding a horse. It was perched on the withers where there was a good tuft of mane to grip and sat there while the horse grazed alongside a bank covered with lantana. Every now and then the goshawk flew over the lantana, although I did not see it catch anything. Birds are amazing. You learn something new every time you go out. selling antiques and nostalgia. ” Explore Retro will be having a sale in June. Scott Wurth was all ready a widely acclaimed still photographer, named digital photographer for NSW at the Australian Institute of Professional Photography Awards (AIPP) in 1996, and was National Runner up in the Australian Portrait Photographer Of The Year when he graduated from the Art Centre College Of Design, Pasadena California with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Scott’s first documentary film ‘Tira Bakal’ (Striking Metal) has all ready received five awards, and over 15 official selections. This film is part of a trilogy, and the second film, ‘Panata’ is also receiving much acclaim – and creating a lot of controversy. The three documentaries were filmed in the Philippines. The first film, Tira Bakal, is about the re-enactment of the Passion of Christ in Good Friday. The second,‘Panata’( the Pledge) delves into the meanings and the promises behind
Local personality Independent filmmaker Scott Wurth has fond memories of coming to Blue Mountains as a small child. “My family made numerous trips each year,” says Scott. “I would run around the Carrington and the Hydro Majestic Hotel and watch the ladies and gentlemen valet their e-type Jaguars in formal attire, before ballroom dancing. It was like being witness to a Great Gypsy film.”
These days Scott lives and works in Katoomba, promoting his films and running his shop, Explore Retro, an antiques and collectibles shop opposite Katoomba station. The shop runs on a not for profit basis, with all the money being raised going to the filmmaking company, Lasting Image Productions. “After long deliberation and many attempts to get Government funding, I realized that ocean of money only went to a select few,” Said Scott, wryly. “so I made Explore Retro into the solution. It’s a place for networking and creativity,
the ritual. Cutud, the third film, rounds out the trilogy on the topic of Panata, focusing on personal pledges that get tainted with fame, power and money. A fourth version, “The 15th Station” which combines the three documentaries, is also being distributed. Scott is hoping to build a network of Mountains Filmmakers.

Ladies Probus Club It was a change of pace at the May meeting of the Ladies Probus Club of the Upper Blue Mountains when Jacinta Shailer, was invited to speak on “The Story of the Universe” Jacinta is a Good Samaritan Sister of the Maria Tal Cottages, Lawson, which are ‘Houses of Hospitality and Creative Refreshment.’ We were treated to a power-point presentation featuring Jacinta’s production talents fusing beautiful music and creative camera shots with intriguing script work. It evoked an emotional appreciation of the value of our planet stressing the need for care, intelligent usage and replenishment to sustain the many benefits we enjoy but sadly take for granted. The members were also given an entertaining account of a tour of China by Chris Rhind. The next meeting will be Wednesday June 16th at Leura Golf Club at 10 am. The Warm and Fuzzy Festival June 27th 10am - 2pm at Katoomba North Public School hall The idea for first Warm and Fuzzy Festival came about over a humble cuppa and chat late last 2008 at Katoomba North Public School. Some local residents were talking about what makes North Katoomba such a unique and dynamic place and what they love about their community. This led to talk about creating a community arts projects celebrating all that makes North Katoomba such a great place. Talk of a festival began! A series of workshops teaching craft skills such as knitting, crochet, stitching and dying gave us great opportunities for having fun together, creating connections and makings many fine beanies and other winter woollies for sale and display at the first ‘Warm and Fuzzy’ in August 2009. This year the Warm and Fuzzy Festival will offer these activities:
