Delivered monthly to Emu Plains, Emu Heights, Leonay, Lapstone, Glenbrook & Blaxland

Dylan gets 2 hat tricks in 1 innings Emu Plains Cricket Club young gun, Dylan Griffey, achieved an outstanding feat in the club’s 5th Grade match against Colyton St Clair recently. Dylan, aged 17, took two hat-tricks in the one innings spread across 4 overs eventually taking 8/37 to help EPCC to a comfortable win Dylan’s captain, Michael Bowden, admitted he had not seen anything like this in his playing days and club Secretary, Jim Micsko, was wading through the club’s records and archives to see if this had previously occurred in the club’s long and proud history. Dylan has performed strongly all season and is currently the leading

wicket taker in the 5th Grade Nepean District Cricket Association competition. The Emu Plains Cricket Club would like to congratulate Dylan on this excellent achievement and look forward to many more fine performances throughout this season and beyond.

Proposed gas main and regulating station Plans to construct a new primary gas main from Penrith to Emu Plains to improve the gas supply to homes and businesses in the Emu Plains to Blue Mountains region are already underway. This project will also include the construction of a primary regulating station at Emu Plains for pressure reduction for the gas network to assist in accommodating projected growth

in demand for gas from homes and businesses in this region. Continued page 7

Train Yard Protest Emu Plains residents’ concerns about the proposed train stabling yard are increasing as more implications about the development are realised. A petition has attracted hundreds of names already. Liberal Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, raised the issue in Parliament, attended the public meeting at Nepean High School and has sent a survey out to residents. Residents want to see the train services improved but feel there is an alternative which would not affect residential houses and two high schools. The present plan will increase noise, vibration, light pollution and attract vandalism as well as the estimated 120 trucks a day on Russell Street. Continued page 6

Community Connections with Emu Plains Anglican Church As well as being involved with teaching in local Primary and High Schools, the Anglican Church at Emu Plains is offering a fantastic range of programs for kids of all ages. Each is geared for having a great time and learning together what the Bible is all about. Youth and Children’s Minister, Tony Jones says, “We’re finding lots of local families are getting involved, even people who don’t normally come to church. All are welcome and join in the fun.” Little ones in pre-school can Jump and Jive their way through Wednesday mornings while parents enjoy Coffee, Craft and Chat. After school, infants age Jam together, while on Wednesday evenings primary age programs – Grace for girls and B4C (Bforce) for boys are great places to be. High Schoolers have an Epic time on Friday nights. The programs are run by trained leaders and designed to meet the needs of each particular age group. Are you sick and tired of feeling sick and tired? Would you like to improve your health, your energy levels and generally feel better in yourself? Maybe you’ve forgotten how it feels to be truly well and energised. Have you considered natural therapy? There are lots of reasons why it could be the best option for you. Michelle Beech from Glenbrook has recently graduated as a naturapath, a big decision and a total career change for her. Her interest in health started while spending holidays at her grandparents’ house. After breakfast she looked in fascination as her Grandfather opened a huge container full of funny little bottles. He methodically took out different coloured pills and spent a long time assessing which he would take – and it was quite an effort swallowing them all. Of course these were all pharmaceutical drugs.

He said that when a person gets old, they have to take lots of pills to be “healthy” but Michelle’s Granddad was very unhealthy, often in hospital, weak and tired, and couldn’t walk far So Michelle decided that she would not take lots of pills to stay healthy when she grew old. Later Michelle noticed other pills - the vitamin pills which Grandmother took. She had a little book which Michelle liked to read called “Folk Remedies” advocating staying healthy using natural products such as apple cider vinegar, ensuring her diet contained the right balance of nutrients, proteins, carbs and healthy fats. To Michelle, Grandmother was a very healthy person. She was strong, had lots of energy and could walk for hours taking her grandchildren on various outings. Eventually Grandfather passed away in his early 70’s, while Grandmother lived to within one month of her 100th birthday. Michelle drew her own conclusions about how to stay healthy. Other influences in Michelle’s life continually pointed to a career in health and wellbeing, so at the young age of 47 she took the plunge and enrolled to study Naturopathy, Her studies focussed heavily on science subjects including biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, botany, pathology and pharmacology and then came 650 hours of practical clinic work. Michelle has now qualified as a Naturopath and fully appreciates that there is so much that can be done with the appropriate nutritional medicine, dietary modifications, herbal medicine and homeopathy to treat a vast range of conditions. Michelle is located at Penrith Osteopathy, 30 The Crescent Penrith, telephone 4721 0101 for an appointment, or check out Michelle’s website www.michellebeechnd.com.

Lamrock Street unit development The development application for 92 units in Lamrock street, Emu Plains, was refused by Penrith Council due to concerns about flooding. A second application lodged for 66 units, including a helicopter pad on top of one of the buildings, was also rejected by council because of concerns about flooding, design, parking and the public interest. The development will now be decided on by the Land and Environment Court in April.

Wedding Congratulations Sandra Morey from Glenbrook and Alan Rumsey were married on the 4th December at Blue Mountains City Church, Mount Riverview. They will be living in Glenbrook. Best wishes to Sandra and Alan.

Train Yard Protest As residents, including Mr Trent Malley from Nixon Street, say “most local familes have at least one family member using the trains and we are all for an improved service. We feel that Novo are taking the cheap option with no regard for the residents. House prices are already being affected and when the land is built up the noise will increase even without the extra trains. The last train is 1am and the first is 4am and each train has to sound its whistle as well as check the brakes. The lifts at the station will apparently be out of use for 6 months and all the trucks along Russell Street will block up the M4 access even more affecting many thousands of residents.” Liberal Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres encourages all Emu Plains residents to make a submission to NovoRail by writing to: Emu Plains Stabling Yard REF, c/- Novo Rail, Level 11, 338 Pitt Street, SYDNEY NSW 2000 Or emailing: enquiries@novorail.com.au Stuart says ‘’Why is the train stabling yard even being considered for Emu Plains when there is already a stabling yard at Penrith, with vacant land that does not border residential housing? I will fight to make the voices of Emu Plains residents heard”.

Reg wins Volunteer of the Year Award Reg Menz, the Nepean District Historical Society’s treasurer, has won the ‘2010 Sydney Outer West and Blue Mountains Senior Volunteer of the Year’ award. He was presented with his award in a ceremony at Parliament House on 3rd December. The awards, presented by ‘The Centre for Volunteering’ and Westpac, recognise the tireless efforts of volunteers in our community. Reg loves working at the Arms of Australia Inn Museum in Emu Plains.
