Emu Heights Theatre Company Calls on Local Community for Support Next month, Emu Heights Theatre Company (EHTC) celebrates five years of bringing engaging, inspiring and entertaining theatre to Penrith and the West. As it celebrates its fifth anniversary, EHTC acknowledges its achievements of engaging thousands of students and teachers as well as expanding Penrith CBD’s cultural connections. However, EHTC is currently under resourced in personnel and funds. This will need to change if EHTC is to continue producing the quality theatre for which the company has become known. To address EHTC’s resource issues, the EHTC Management Committee has agreed to take the following actions: 1. Present “The ShoeHorn Sonata at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre in April͞ 2. Place on hold all stage productions from May 2015 into the next two years. This period will be dedicated to reinvigorating EHTC through better strategic planning, sourcing of funds and personnel as well as renewing and reaffirming links in the local community. 3. Co-founder Ian Zammit will step out of the role of Artistic Director and join the EHTC Management Committee to plan the future of the company. ...Continued page 7.

Penrith Harmony is a group of male singers from the Nepean District and Lower Blue Mountains. You may have seen them singing in shopping centres, nursing homes, community, corporate and charity events or at the Carols by Candlelight. Penrith Harmony are currently hard at work preparing for the Barbershop Australia National Convention to be held later in the year in Melbourne, where they will represent the local district. If you’re looking for a new hobby that will keep you mentally fresh, introduce you to new friends and provide entertainment for yourself and others, Penrith Harmony are looking for new singers. Singers are always welcome to come along and learn the skills of singing in harmony, have fun and perhaps be able to join them at future events. Finding Forgiveness Forgiveness. Have you ever found it hard to offer it? I have. Would you like to be better at it? I would. Forgiveness costs, and there’s no arguing that the things we can do to each other – we do to each other - take a great toll. Wearing that when you were the one wronged doesn’t seem fair. It’s not. Jesus had a bit to say about forgiveness. He told the story of two men. One owed a year and half’s pay. The other owed two month’s pay. Neither could pay it back, so the lender cancelled their debts. Then Jesus asked ‘which will love him more?’. It’s the one who’d been forgiven more, of course (Luke 7:36-50). Interestingly, neither were treated fairly. But that wasn’t where Jesus stopped. He went on to make it possible. He wore the cost for God, for how we’ve treated God. He paid it by his death on the cross. And God proved it was paid in full, when He raised him from the dead. He didn’t treat us fairly. But this is the place to learn how to forgive, when we receive the forgiveness God offers. How much did we owe Him? Our very lives. Can anyone wrong us more than we did Him? No they can’t. Can we forgive them? Yes we can, if we draw our forgiveness from the deep well of forgiveness with which He has loved us. Humans Need Hugs Touch is so important. Infants that have all of their needs met but don’t get hugs, affection or eye contact are at risk of developing a condition called ‘failure to thrive’. Dr Virginia Satir, a world renowned family therapist, said that humans need…4 hugs per day for survival, 8 hugs per day for maintenance, 12 hugs per day for growth. How many hugs have your kids had today? It’s easy to give our little kids hugs because they are frequently climbing all over us. As our kids get older, we need to remember to give them hugs too. I tell my big boys “you’re never too old or too big for a hug”. Parents who have a number of children do the math. They say “I have 4 kids so that means I’ll be giving 48 hugs per day, that’s a lot of hugs”. Those parents who decide to give their kids’ hugs find lots of ways to meet the quota (hint: group hugs), and they report that they feel closer to their children, and their children have better behaviour as a result. When you have a strong relationship with your child, he or she is more inclined to listen to you and do as you ask. And why do hugs create all this goodness? Hugs release oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is a ‘peace, love, and mung beans’ hormone that counteracts the nasty stress hormone called Cortisol. Go on! Give your kids more hugs. The nice thing about a hug is that while you’re giving one, you’re getting one in return. It’s a win-win!

The Hotel Management Institute (HMI) and McCarthy Catholic College again combined to present the HMI Challenge to Years 11 and 12 Hospitality students from Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. HMI is part of the Escarpment Group of 5 Star Hotels, Lillianfels, Echoes, Parklands and the iconic Hydro Majestic. The HMI Challenge comprises an initial visit to the Hydro Majestic, followed by a cook off, Hotel Management Scenario and HMI Presentation, held at McCarthy Catholic College, Emu Plains. Student teams of two, selected ingredients from a range of items and prepared a meal, which was judged by Mr John Rankin, Chief Chef from Katoomba TAFE. Young student chefs were under intense pressure to prepare and cook their dish under scrutiny, time pressures, cooking heat and the buzz of a busy kitchen. Shailee Bartle from McCarthy said ‘It was fun but we had to work hard as a team’. Ethan Smith from Nepean HS commented ‘I know it was a competition but everyone was so friendly and helpful in the kitchen’. Shaani Gorman from McCarthy was pleased with the prepared meal but was ‘glad when it was over!’ Mr Rankin praised the young chefs and was impressed with their concentration, ability to work under pressure and prepare tasty and attractively presented food. The Hotel Management Scenario comprised student teams of front office managers, responding to a hotel guest complaining about the state of her room. Quick thinking and fast responses were needed! In the HMI Presentation, students outlined the benefits of HMI to a career in hospitality and event management. Participating schools included: McCarthy Catholic College, St Andrews College, St Columbas College, Loyolla College and Glenmore Park, Katoomba, Cambridge Park, Hawkesbury and Nepean High Schools. In 1st Place were Angelica Papasidero and Ben Crittenden, Glenmore Park HS. 2nd Place Shailee Bartle and Shaani Gorman, McCarthy Catholic College 3rd Place Ashley Zarb and Rachel Berry, St Andrews College. Mr Peter DeMoor, CEO of HMI summed up that ‘All teams participated excellently, were fine competitors and showed great skill and potential for the hospitality industry’. Mr Craig Laffin, Careers Adviser from McCarthy, said ‘I am so impressed to witness great collaboration between secondary schools, TAFE and the hospitality industry’.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist & Remedial Therapist Beautiful Health & Wellness – 0418 166 269

Fixing Chronic Foot Pain – Plantar Fasciitis Many of us have had painful feet at some time. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes. Treatment options include rest, supportive shoes, arch supports, orthotics, stretching, strengthening, night splints, anti-inflammatory agents or surgery. These measures may help but some people suffer for a long time with little relief, even after trying many of these treatments. Plantar fasciitis pain can stop you walking, running, working, playing, and leave you feeling debilitated and frustrated when you can’t resolve it. Technically, things like over pronation, different leg lengths, lateral tibial torsion, & femoral anteversion are risk factors for plantar fasciitis, but, it’s plantar-fascia micro trauma, from overuse or excessive weight bearing activities that’s the most common cause. Overuse causes injury to foot ligaments, tendons and muscles. These tissues swell with toxin-filled fluids that leak from injured cells causing connective tissues, muscles & nerves in the affected areas to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood & lymph flow and this sustains the cycle of inflammation & pain. In most instances the solution lies in: 1. Reducing stressors (temporarily stop running, weight loss, etc) 2. Improving nutrient intake so the body can resist stressors 3. Removing inflammatory build-up in foot & calf, and lengthening affected muscles. This allows foot tissue function to normalise, which often relieves foot pain completely, even in many long standing cases.

7 Tips to get you Through Easter Wow! Easter comes around so quickly after Christmas, more family parties and meeting up with friends. Another celebration to remind you that your loved one isn’t there and you feel you should look happy and continue your life as normal. Quick tips to help you survive Easter: 1. Be gentle with yourself – Taking care of yourself is your first priority. If you feel like you need to be alone that’s ok just be alone. 2. Make time to grieve – Maybe you’d like to spend time with others but then feel overwhelmed and need to be somewhere with yourself. 3. Listen to music – choose relaxing music, slow your breathing down and get lost in the beauty of the music. 4. Have a cuppa – I love this one. It’s time to sit and be with yourself or if you want to talk about your loved one, invite a friend to talk about old times with you. 5. Have fun with kids – sometimes kids will sit and colour in quietly, calming your mind and body. Alternatively kick a soccer ball around the back yard, and take in the happy endorphins. 6. Share your feelings – let people know how you’re feeling, the level of support you’ll need and what you’re prepared to participate in. 7. Create new rituals – find new ways to celebrate, get creative. Make new traditions to acknowledge your loved one. Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. As a leading specialist in her field she has helped people move through their unresolved grief, to feel less isolated and alone. Congratulations to Tully Brown and Tahlia Rando on making the basketball team and to Annabelle Ruskin who was selected for the girls’ soccer team. Bridie Witjes and Madison Whiteley were recently selected into the Diocesan netball team. Special mention must be made of Aimee Wagner’s selection into the Mackillop girls’ softball team for the second year in a row. MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson – Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Property Investing Basics We have an affinity for property here in Australia. We all want to own our own home and most of us would like to own an investment property or two. In fact over 1.9 million of us reported to the ATO that we owned an investment property. That’s about 8.3% of the population. But whilst many of us have the desire to be property investors, most will never take that step due to misinformation, fear or simply not knowing how to proceed. Some invest anyway, often with disastrous results. Done properly though property can be an easy and relatively safe investment which can provide tax benefits and generate wealth over the long term if you get a few key things right. Of course finding the right property is crucial. An attractive rental proposition in an area where demand is high. Then you need to protect your asset properly with a good Landlord’s Insurance in case you get one of the few bad tenants. Importantly though, you must make sure that your finances are structured correctly. Without question, most of the problems I see that investors have, all relate back to their finance. Whether you’re looking to buy your first investment, fix a problem with your existing property or want to grow your portfolio, our free Property Investor consultation is for you. And the great thing is, we won’t try to sell you a property!
