Beaumont Wins!! Penrith Basketball junior representative Tatiana Beaumont (Emu Heights) has returned from the Australian Under 16 Basketball Championships with a Silver Medal, playing as a member of the NSW Metropolitan Women’s team. The Blues started the tournament poorly, suffering two big losses in their opening two rounds, before staging a gutsy fight back to qualify for the playoffs. Subsequent wins over Victoria Country (66-57) in the quarter final and South Australia Metro (70-55) in the semifinal put the Blues through to the Grand Final, where they would match up with the imposing favourites, Victoria Metro. The Victorians had thumped the Blues 84-41 in the first game of the tournament and although NSW had improved immeasurably from that point, they were still no match for the southerners in the grand final. Victoria Metro won 64-38 to claim the Gold Medal, leaving NSW with a Silver Medal from a week of high-quality basketball. Penrith junior Meg Jefferson (Springwood) was also a ď ˛ď€ Photo | Tatiana Beaumont (with ball) in action for the Panthers Youth member of the NSW Metro team and finished the tournament League Women's team earlier this year. FROM FROMTHE THEEDITOR EDITOR

August has arrived, which means it’s not too long until Spring creeps across the hill! You can almost see it from here. With the greening of the grass that soon grows to carpet the earth, the trees warmed by fresh sunlight and rain, new leaves and new life. Flowers blooming and splashes of colour all around us. This month we have plenty of excuses to keep you curled up by the fire with a warm cuppa. We speak of successes, achievements and wins of another kind; local events, important dates and highlights of local sporting clinics, while sharing all our regular monthly updates with you. Camille talks of the wonderful kitten adoption program that they coordinate in Paws A While (Pg 11), while we welcome back Julie who reminds us of all things ‘Water Safe’ (Pg 9) as we creep into the warmer months ahead. PROACTIVE PETS The Lions Club of Emu Plains celebrated winning an award at the District 2015/16 Awards Night at Revesby Workers Club last month. Jim Devine, Publicity Officer for the Lions Club of Emu Plains, was awarded the Anthony Cheung Trophy for the Best Media Coverage of Lions Projects or Events throughout the Lions Year. The Lions Club of Emu Plains is a member of the Lions Club of Sydney and Norfolk Island (201N5), with a district of over 70 Lions Clubs who were all vying for the outstanding award. “The Award gives the Club a great morale boost and it shows that even with only 10 members, great achievements can be made. As I indicated to my colleagues, I’m simply reporting on their interactions with community and charities. Without them it doesn’t happenâ€? explained Jim Devine. This is the first District Award the Lions Club of Emu Plains and/or an individual have won. It follows on from success in this year’s Youth of the Year Quest, where the Club sponsored a contestant to place within a whisker of winning the State Championship. The Trophy was judged by the sitting District Governor and a panel of District Officers. This award was a great achievement, not only for the Club, but for Jim. “Personally, the Award is extremely pleasing. I didn’t join Lions for the accolades, but recognition that your work is noticed and appreciated by your peers, especially the calibre of the judging panel, is very humblingâ€? he said. ď ˛ď€ L–R John Choma – Foundation member, Alan Cooper – Events Manager, Ian West– President + award winner Jim Devine – Publicity Officer | Image supplied.

Article Written + Submitted by: Tom Melbourne P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

Remember back to your High School days? Classes and crushes, pimples and P-plates. Clearly some parts of it are amazing, while there are other parts you'd much rather leave behind! You might not realise it, but there are lots of High Schoolers involved in churches all across our region! Jesus has so much to offer every one of us, and so it makes sense that even young people would be drawn to him and want to know more about what he said and did. This month Emu Plains Anglican Church is excited to be hosting UNITE, a huge night where 250 High Schoolers from churches all around Penrith will be getting together to have fun and celebrate Jesus. Hopefully we will have some great weather and everybody will have a great night! And every week at Emu Plains Anglican we have FUSE, a night for High Schoolers on Fridays during term time. Check out our website for more details, or search for ‘Fuse Emu Plains’ on Facebook. Everybody in Years 7-12 is welcome. Tom Melbourne Assistant Minister, Emu Plains Anglican Church

From 1 August an Opal single bus ticket will become available on-board buses. No tickets will be available for purchase on light rail or ferries. Daffodil Hope Cancer is a scary thing but it’s not until you personally experience it either yourself, a family member, loved one or close friend that you really feel the impact of what cancer is and how it can change your life. According to the Cancer Council, more than one million Australians are currently living with cancer or have survived a cancer diagnosis and unfortunately almost all of us know someone living with cancer. Sadly, too many of us have also lost loved ones to this horrible disease. August every year is focused around Daffodil day which raises vital funds for, and awareness about the work of the Cancer Council. This includes research, patient support services and prevention programs, helping support the 350 Australians diagnosed with Cancer each day. After experiencing a loved one pass away from Cancer your only hope is that one day a cure will be found so that you or your family will never have to endure the terrible disease. This is why donating to such an important event is always a top priority. There are a number of ways to get involved which includes buying merchandise including pins from local supermarkets and participating outlets. Donating on line at daffodilday.com. au or you can even fill up your vehicle at any Coles Express site across Australia on Daffodil Day (26th August 2016 only) and Coles Express will donate 2 cents from every litre of fuel sold to Cancer Council. My favourite is purchasing a bunch of Daffodils to brighten up my home. Every little dollar helps. On Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day Friday 26th August smell the daffodils, make a donation and know that you have made a difference.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… Parents sometimes give instructions to children in a way that sets them up for failure. Some common problems with instructions are: • Too Many – Children can only take in so much information at once. Sometimes we give too much detail and too many steps. Little kids, and children with disorders or disabilities, can only cope with one instruction at a time. • Too Few – We need to set our children up for success. For certain tasks, we need to give them enough information to get on with the job. Our kids usually let us know when this happens when they say “but you didn’t tell me that”. • Too Hard – Sometimes we give instructions that are too hard for children because we have unrealistic expectations of what our kids can do for their age. • Bad Timing – Instructions given when a child is busy playing with friends or watching his favourite TV show may be ignored. • Too Vague – Telling a child to stop being silly doesn’t tell the child what she should be doing. • Giving Instructions As A Question – If there is no option, don’t give an instruction as a question. For example, asking a child “would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” may be met with the reply “no thanks, mummy” and the child runs away from you. • Long Distance – Yelling instructions across the room or from the other end of the house, frequently doesn’t get much response from a child. • Mismatch - The parents’ body language does not match what she or he is saying. If you are laughing whilst telling a child to not do something, the child will be confused. What To Do Instead? Give your child clear, calm, and direct instructions in close proximity with eye contact. Tell your child what to do (for example, “sit on the lounge”), rather than what not to do (“don’t jump on the lounge”). And have realistic expectations of your children given their age and stage of development.

Junior Golf Clinic at Leonay Golf Club

The development of Junior Golfers at Leonay is coming along in leaps and bounds following generous sponsorship of Junior Golf at Leonay by Gordon Martin and the Tattersall's Centre at Penrith. According to the Juniors that attended they had a great day and loved the concept of the joint Junior Clinic between GWS and Leonay Golf Club. Tom Mohr, Devon Smith and Sam Reid from GWS were warmly welcomed guests on the day. The day was a huge success with all the kids who attended. The morning started with a 45 min AFL clinic which included

ball games and drills which were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Following this was question and answers with the players. At the conclusion each player hit a few tee shots up the 1st hole which saw Tom Mohr come out on top of the unofficial long drive competition between the 3 GWS players. After the players left the next 2.5hrs was spent working on the kids golf game and improving their skills. The day concluded with a sausage sizzle and drink back at the Pro Shop. A fun day for all at Leonay Gold Club | Article + Images supplied.

As a kid, science was just another subject that I had no choice but to participate in. As an adult, science in everyday life is so fascinating that it’s made me wonder as a parent how I can get my children excited about science. What was once looked at as being nerdy and boring is now something that is cool, fun and interesting. It keeps our kids brains active whilst asking those questions which sometimes stump us as parents, like “why is the sky blue?” or “where do stars come from?”. It’s a great way to spark ideas and encourage experimentation with how the world works. Here are some simple activities and ideas that you can participate with your children to discover the wonders of science experimentation. 1. Home-made ice blocks can show freezing and melting. 2. Shining a torch at a mirror at night illustrates reflection. 3. Flying a kite shows wind speed and direction. 4. Looking at the stars and discussions about whole new galaxies can open up. 5. Adding various objects to a bath-time boat illustrates flotation. 6. Watching a puddle change on the way to school for several days shows evaporation. 7. Leaving an egg in vinegar for a couple of days shows how the acid will eat away the shell. 8. Putting a celery stalk in a glass half full of water and coloured dye allows kids to witness capillary action. 9. Experimenting with various foods such as leaving bread to mould and talking about tinned peaches shows decomposition and preservation. This August we celebrate National Science Week and events are expected to be held right throughout Sydney offering an array of activities with everything from science festivals, music and comedy shows, interactive hands-on displays, open days and online activities. The festival is proudly supported by the Australian Government, as well as partners CSIRO, Australian Science Teachers Association and the ABC. National Science Week 2016 will run from 13-21 August. WATER SAFETY

Article Written + Submitted by: Julie Fletcher Nepean Aquatic Centre + Eva Borys Swim School A: 16 – 19 Lambridge Place, Penrith P: 4730 8900 E: julie@nepeanswim.com.au W: nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au With Spring just around the corner, one of the best things a parent can do to keep their child safer around water is to make sure they start Learn To Swim classes as soon as possible. Formal lessons usually begin around 6 months old, however you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this. Babies are not born with a fear of the water, but may acquire this fear over time, so make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with less fear than an older child. In addition to safety, there are other benefits for babies introduced to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance. The warm water combined with gentle exercise will relax your baby and stimulate their appetite, promoting good sleep and happier mealtimes. Additionally, the uninterrupted quality time whilst swimming facilitates an even deeper bond between parent and child, and as swimming becomes a natural part of your child’s weekly routine, a healthy exercise habit is created. But how long will it take for your child to learn to swim? The simple answer is that every child is different, and learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process. Consistency is the key to the development and maintenance of swimming skills, so attending lessons should become an established part of your child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years.

Regular lessons all year round allow your child to practise the swimming skills appropriate to their developmental stage and learn at their own pace. However the earlier you begin your children on their learn to swim adventure, the sooner they will obtain this lifesaving skill. It is important to remember that swimming is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children – it is an invaluable lifelong skill that may just save their lives. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

So You’ve got Osteoporosis!! What’s it Really Mean? What can you do about it? Last month we asked whether drugs are really the answer to reduce fracture risk? This month we define osteoporosis and it’s the relevance to your risk of breaking a bone. Osteoporosis is defined in terms of bone density (aka bone mass). Bone density tests measure the amount of X-rays that can pass through a bone (e.g. spine, hip or mid radius). The more X-rays that can pass through, the lower the bone density. Your BMD is then compared to the ‘mean value of peak bone mass’ in normal young adult. A score of 0 means your BMD is equal to the norm for a healthy young adult. You’re classed as having: 1. Osteopenia - if your bone density is decreased moderately (i.e. between 1-2.5 standard deviations) below that of normal young adult. 2. Osteoporosis - if your bone density is decreased a lot (i.e. greater than 2.5 standard deviations) below that of normal young adult We only measure bone density because it may give a clue as to bone strength and your risk of fracture. It’s value is somewhat limited however because in reality many people with low bone density actually have relatively strong bones and some people with high bone density actually have weaker bones. Why? First we need to understand that there are two types of bone tissue – compact & trabecular (see diagram 1). Both are important to a bone’s strength. Once we understand this we can see that bone strength actually depends on at least 4 different things: 1. Whether the compact bone & trabecular bone is thick or thin (how much total bone mass do you have?). Your ‘bone mineral density’ is a measure of your bone mass. Irrespective of your ‘bone mass’, 2. If your bone’s not mineralised properly at a microscopic level, mineralisation defects reduce strength 3. Altered trabecular bone architecture (3D shape & structure) can weaken the whole bone (See diagram 2) 4. Cortical (compact) bone may be more porous (larger number &/or sized ‘Swiss-cheese-like’ holes) and thus weaker. So people with relatively thick bones and reasonable bone density scores, could still have increased fracture risk due to microscopic mineralisation defects for example. Many things influence the 4 ‘bone strength’ factors above, including race, sex, age, diet, exercise, sunshine, smoking, alcohol abuse, autoimmunity, medications (eg corticosteroid use), HRT

and genes. It’s best to build and then maintain bone strength as we age. But even if your bone density is low there are still things that you can do to either halt further bone loss and strengthen existing bone at any age with or without increase in BMD. We’ll discuss some of these over the next few issues so stay tuned. Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 3 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. The 3 male kittens are from the same litter and are 5.5 months old. Two of the kittens are black and one kitten is black and white. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Check out our website for more information www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. ď śď€ Cute Kittens looking for their furever homes. ‘What’s with Wheat?’

Article Written + Submitted by: Cait Wotherspoon from Indigo Therapies Counselling + Psychotherapy W: indigotherapies.com.au P: 0434 865 429 E: cait@indigotherapies.com.au

A new Australian made documentary spills the beans on the devastating effect wheat is having on our nation’s health. Could our modern wheat production and the amount of wheat we daily consume be contributing to the global health crisis? (https://www.whatswithwheat.com) These are the questions explored in a new feature-length documentary “What’s With Wheat?”. Could modern wheat be contributing to your: • IBS and pesky digestive issues? • Depression and anxiety? • Autoimmune disease? • Headaches and joint pain? • Skin conditions? • Brain fog and memory issues? The documentary features 15 global experts from Australia, United States, England, America, New Zealand and India including Dr Perlmutter, Sarah Ballantyne, Dr Terry Wahls, Dr Natasha Campbell McBride and Pete Evans who shed the light on what is currently happening to our wheat. ‘What’s With Wheat?’ warns that modern agricultural practices of wheat growing has produced a highly addictive product that is making people more susceptible to disease. “What’s With Wheat?” answers how differently our wheat crops are now grown and processed, what’s added to the wheat, the reason why it’s so addictive which is leading people to consume more than they used to and why wheat is now added to other foods and cosmetics. “We’ve certainly observed a steady increase in the rate of celiac disease and the rate of non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Why?” asks Dr Terry Wahls, Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Iowa. Dr Stephanie Seneff, Senior Research Scientist, MIT says “Glyphosate is the active ingredient in the pervasive herbicide ‘Round Up’ which is used in chemical agriculture extensively. The glyphosate in the wheat is causing such a train wreck in the body that it's no wonder that we can't eat the wheat.” In March 2015 the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic in humans". David Perlmutter MD, FACN, ABIHM, Neurologist, and #1 New York Time Bestseller Author “Grain Brain” says “We are ten times more bacteria than we are human cells therefore glyphosate becomes a major issue for us to be real concerned about.” The film’s co-director Cyndi O’Meara, Nutritionist and Founder of Changing Habits says, “The story of wheat is the story of food. Become educated, become knowledgeable, become aware. Start making changes, step by step, habit by habit and we may be able to create a tsunami of change that will change the health of our children and future generations.” Details of local screening events and links to tickets can be found at www.emuwellness.com/events

Comfort or Support: Which is Better? Often grievers lose friends because their friends don’t know how to provide support. A view supported by research. When a loved one dies your friends want to do the right thing and often tie themselves in knots trying. It’s human nature to want to ease a friend’s pain. Sitting with a friend while they grieve is difficult, you want to cheer them up so they aren’t so unhappy. Which is better? Comfort: is when you want to take away the pain and make your friend less unhappy. This can make your friend feel isolated and not heard. Comfort is great when a child falls over and skins their knee, you can give them a kiss, band-aid and a hug. Well intentioned “At least” statements such as, “At least they lived a good life” make the griever feel alone and misunderstood. Support: is the desire to provide help and assistance to the griever for life, they are along for the journey. Instead of trying to comfort the person who is grieving, support them. Don’t just say, “Let me know if there’s anything I can do”. The griever doesn’t know what they want or need. Find things that you can help with, mowing the lawn, cooking a meal, shopping, taking children for a play date etc. offer your support (what you are willing to do) – they can always say no. As you can see physical and emotional wellbeing can be helped with effective social support, letting the griever know that they are loved and cared for, that you’re there for the long haul. Cait is passionate about helping people who have suffered loss. As a leading specialist in her field she’s helped people move through their grief, to feel less isolated and alone. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD.
