A man has died following a fire at a licensed premises in Sydney’s West last month. About 1.45am (Friday 10 June 2016), emergency services were called to a licensed premises on the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains, following reports of a fire. On arrival, officers from Penrith Local Area Command located a 29-year-old man on the road with serious burns. Police rendered assistance to the man. He was taken to Nepean Hospital and later transferred to Royal North Shore Hospital. He died about 9pm. A 30-year-old man was located by NSW Ambulance Paramedics at Avoca Street, Emu Plains, with serious burns, and taken to Nepean Hospital. Detectives from Penrith Local Area Command are continuing to investigate the incident and urge anyone with information to contact Penrith Police Station on (02) 4721 9444 or Crime Stoppers. A report will be prepared for the Coroner. What Might you ask for? I’ve had kids for a while now, so I’m used to being asked for things. It started off as, ‘Dad, can you swing me around? Dad, can you play this game with me? Dad, can I have an ice cream?’. Now they’re older, the starting point has become more expensive, it’s ‘Dad, can we go to the movies? Dad, can I have an iphone? Dad, can I have a car?’ I have to say I love giving things to my kids, and I’m heartened by their vote of confidence that I can give almost anything they want, but I’ll leave it to your imagination to guess which they’ve actually received. The thing is, Jesus spoke of God as Father. He even compared Him to earthly fathers like me. Jesus said, ‘Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good things to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:9-11)’ God is ready, waiting to give us the good things he provides through Jesus. He offers the sort of gifts I could only dream of giving my children. He offers life and eternal life, he offers forgiveness for what’s past, He offers confidence about the future, He offers for us to know Him personally as our Father. A Business successfully functions when a team is strong, committed and work well together. While it is important to constantly work hard and achieve goals, it is equally important to take some time out of the busy schedule and have fun. That is exactly what the District Gazette team did when we attended an Escape Room for a night of team building. Recently, the District Gazette team went out for a night full of fun and team building. The night started with dinner where we all put our brains together for a business brain storm. Brain storming is an amazing tool to allow all members of the team to express their ideas and together you can come up with exciting and incredible ideas on how to move forward or enhance your business venture. During the brain storm everyone bounces of each other and in no time you have some pretty remarkable ideas on the table. Dinner was followed by an exciting adventure to an Escape Room. Something new for many of us, the escape room saw us get locked in a room full of puzzles, mazes and clues which we had to use to physically escape the room in under an hour. Our communication, time management, and multitasking skills were all put to the test while we all worked as a team to complete each task and get out of the room. We successfully escaped with 18 minutes still on the clock and we did so without any clues. Working together as a team is one of the most important elements in order for a business to succeed. Taking some time outside of work to get to know each other in a different environment and having to achieve something new, is a great place to start!

Escalation Traps – Child Escalation Children can learn that to get what they want, they escalate their behaviour. They do more of everything - whinge, nag, cry, scream, shout. Anything to get what they want. Why do they do this? They do it because it works for them. The parent gets tired or overwhelmed, and just gives in. What does the child learn from this? To get what I want I keep pushing until I get what I want. Escalation Traps – Parent Escalation A parent asks a child to do something. The child doesn’t move. The parent asks again. And again. And again. After several requests the parent gets frustrated and starts to yell. When the parent is angry, screaming, counting, or making threats, the child decides that it is time to do as the parent asks. What does the child learn from this? My parent is only serious about the request when she is yelling. This is why parents say “my child never listens to me”. Do these escalation traps happen at your place? Sometimes the child and parent escalate together and it’s a screaming match and a fight over something simple. What Is The Remedy? Make a clear, calm request. Make sure you have your child’s attention by saying his name, getting eye contact, touching him on the shoulder. Tell him what to do rather than what not to do. And make it a request, not a question. If the child complies, give him descriptive praise “thank you for doing as I ask”. If your child does not comply after two clear, calm requests, calmly give him a consequence. The consequence doesn’t need to be harsh, you just need to let your child know that you mean what you say. Struggling? Police Investigate After Pedestrian Fatally Hit - Emu Plains Police are investigating after a woman was fatally hit by a car in Emu Plains last month. Just after 4pm (Thursday 16 June 2016), emergency services were called to Water Street, following reports of a pedestrian hit by a car. A 59-year-old woman was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics at the scene, before she was taken to Nepean Hospital in a critical condition. She died a short time later. The male driver of the car, a Toyota Camry sedan, was not injured during the incident. He was taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

A crime scene was established as investigations took place. Any witnesses are urged to come forward and contact St Marys police via Crime Stoppers. A report will be prepared for the Coroner. Low ‘Bone Density’ – Are Drugs Really the Answer? Many patients attend the clinic with low bone density osteopenia or osteoporosis. They are commonly prescribed bisphosphonate drugs by their GP to increase bone density & reduce fracture risk. These drugs do increase bone density, but astoundingly also increase the risks for: 1. Certain thigh bone fractures – bones become more dense but also more brittle, 2. Gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion & heartburn, nausea/vomiting, and chest pain. These side effects cause up to 20% of patients to discontinue treatment 3. Severe, sometimes incapacitating bone, joint, and/or muscle pain 4. Bisphosphonate-related decay of the jaw bone (called ‘BRONJ’). This is very rare but: a. Intravenous bisphosphonates - often used for cancer patients, leads to a high risk for BRONJ (0.8% to 12% of patients ), this increases the longer the drug is given b. Oral bisphosphonates leads to about 1 BRONJ case in 1500 patient years (100 fold greater than general population). A recent paper published in the prestigious British Medical Journal stated that ‘bisphosphonates’ (taken for hip fracture prevention) are ‘neither viable as a public health strategy nor cost effective’. The authors found that: 1. No evidence exists that these drugs are effective at preventing fractures in men 2. In post-menopausal women, in whom osteoporosis is most often problematic, ‘175 women with bone fragility would need to be treated for three years to prevent’ just ‘one hip fracture’; while all patients remain at risk of side effects, but in women over 80, where most fractures occur no evidence of benefit exists. 3. A recent analysis by the FDA found people receiving bisphosphonates continuously for 6 years had more fractures than a second group who took bisphosphonates for only 3 years then switched to placebo for 3 years 4. Age adjusted incidence of hip fractures has fallen steadily in most Western countries‌ and this ‘does not seem to be attributable to drug treatment’ 5. Poor balance is a much better predictor of bone fracture than bone density 6. Other bone density drug options such as Denosumab; strontium ranelate; &‘Vitamin D & Calcium’supplementation all have efficacy & risk questions hanging over them.

This becomes terribly confusing for most people. What should one do? Whether you take pharmaceuticals or try alternative approaches, it’s important you do your research thoroughly and discuss pros and cons with your doctor. There are some excellent natural strategies that one can implement to improve balance & bone density. 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil 20g Butter 1.2kg Chicken Thigh Fillets, Trimmed, Cut Into 4cm Pieces 2 Leeks, Trimmed, Halved, Washed, Sliced 200g Middle Bacon Rashers, Trimmed, Chopped 250g Cup Mushrooms, Thickly Sliced

Mashed-Potato Topping • 1.6kg Desiree Potatoes, Peeled, Chopped • 100g Butter, Chopped • 1/2 Cup Milk

Make Mashed-potato topping Place potato in a large saucepan. Cover with cold water. Bring to the boil. Simmer over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes or until tender. Drain. Return to pan. Add butter and milk. Mash until smooth. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Heat oil and butter in a large, deep frying pan over mediumhigh heat. Cook chicken, in batches, for 2 to 3 minutes or until browned. Transfer to a 6cm-deep, 3.8 litre-capacity baking dish. Add leek and bacon to pan. Cook, stirring, for 8 minutes, or until leek has softened. Add mushrooms. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes or until tender. Add wine. Bring to the boil. Boil for 2 minutes. Add flour. Cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Gradually stir in stock and cream. Bring to the boil. Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper. Place spinach over chicken in dish. Carefully pour cream mixture over spinach. Stir to combine. Top evenly with mashed potato. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden and chicken is cooked through. Stand for 10 minutes. Serve.

Victoria Bridge Gateway to Western NSW Penrith’s Victoria Bridge, which is one of Australia’s oldest metal bridges, has been given state heritage status and protection, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Heritage Minister Mark Speakman announced last month. The bridge was listed on the State Heritage Register for its link to opening the railway network to Western NSW in 1867, design, social significance, rarity and connection to the bridge’s engineer and designer John Whitton. “The bridge created a road and railway gateway to the west,” Mr Ayres said. “It allowed areas west of the Blue Mountains to grow and helped established Western NSW tourism.” The bridge, which is one of only three bridges of its type in the state, is the most intact remaining example of a continuous iron-through bridge, where the deck is between the girders rather than on top of them. It hasn’t been used for rail since 1907. The bridge is recognised in the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Sydney areas and more widely among railway and bridge enthusiasts and historians. Environment Minister Mark Speakman said the bridge had the largest spans of any metal girder bridge in the state. “Penrith Station was the end of the line before the bridge opened in 1867,” Mr Speakman said. “It is a welcome addition to the State Heritage Register and a fitting tribute to Western Sydney and Western NSW.” Image | Supplied

Helping Traumatised Kids I’ve just spent 6 days in Melbourne at the International Childhood Trauma Conference. I saw Dan Siegel, Pat Ogden and many more. Toxic stress and trauma impact children, adolescents and adults in many different ways. We see the result of that in the way children don’t know how to express their feeling/emotions. Sometimes it looks like they’re lashing out in anger but this might not be the case, they may feel terrified or feel unsafe. Steve Porges put it best, “The removal of threat is not the same as creating safety”. Just think on this for a moment. Kids may be living (in their heads) with fear, loss, trauma and need to be shown that these emotions can be shared with others and they won’t be punished for feeling that way. Being yelled at can be very traumatising for a child. Let’s say they bring a rat into the house to show you and it’s time for lunch. You might yell, “Get that thing out of here, you know it’s lunch time. Why do you always do this?” a better way to respond would be, “I can see you’re interested in the rat, we’ll have a look at it later and we’ll eat lunch now”. The child gets recognised and feels a connection with you because you have shown interest in the rat and he knows that he needs to eat lunch. Studies show that the brain is altered by being yelled at or bullied.
