Nepean River Bridge Tender Awarded

Minister for Roads Duncan Gay and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres recently announced the tender for the Nepean River Bridge has been awarded to Seymour Whyte Constructions. “We are one-step closer to delivering a safer crossing between Penrith and Emu Plains for the hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians who use the narrow Victoria Bridge daily,� Mr Gay said. “The new world-class bridge is going to provide a whopping 257 metre shared path with viewing platforms, canopies and a terrace to take in the picturesque views of the Nepean River, Blue Mountains and historic Victoria Bridge. “We are now getting on with the job of building the bridge which is expected to be completed in 2018,� Mr Gay said. Seymour Whyte Constructions was chosen to deliver the new crossing after a competitive tender process. The crossing will form a key link in the Bridge to Bridge Walk and has the potential to become a local destination for families and residents. “This local landmark is something I promised in the 2011 election and after extensive consideration we are here today presenting the best option for the community and visitors alike,� Mr Ayres said. continued pg. 10

FROM FROMTHE THEEDITOR EDITOR Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season. We have almost crept to the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this will be the end of Term 2 for those at school, and soon to be a New Financial Year for our friends in business. The tail end of June is certainly a busy one! As another month passes, I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment. We have many improvements, upgrades and updates taking place in and around our community. Be they, updates about the airport (page 9), the Nepean River Bridge (cover story) or Tench Reserve (page 3); you can catch up on all the latest information right here. Path Upgrades Just the First Step Work has started to upgrade a section of pathway through Tench Reserve, north of Jamison Road. The 600-metre section of shared path will be widened and, when complete, will reconnect with existing paths through the park. Further sections of path at the northern end of Tench Avenue will be upgraded later in the year. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said the upgrades were part of a broader plan, outlined in Council’s Our River Masterplan. Together, the improved pathways will form the first stage of work to create an “arrival hubâ€?. “At the moment, when you reach the bend at the end of Jamison Road, you can’t see the river,â€? the Mayor said. “We want to create a dramatic entry point to what we call the ‘river precinct’, one that celebrates and showcases our most-loved natural resource.â€? Council adopted the Our River Masterplan in 2013. It was prepared following extensive community consultation with an aim to celebrate the river precinct. The vision contained in the masterplan is of better connections between the river and Penrith’s city centre, improved visual and physical access to the river, and the continued protection of the waterway and its banks. Voting God’s way It’s here again – election time! And the pollies and their parties would like you to vote them in. It’s easy to be cynical about them, or about the process. But which way will you vote? Why does anyone put themselves forward in an election? Isn’t it because the role they’d have has the power to get things done? Governing is like that. People seek it because of the influence and affect it can have on a huge number of people. That’s not a bad thing. It’s just a thing. Now most of us won’t be elected politicians. But we all get to vote. So we have power too. How will we use it? It’s pretty mainstream to use it for self interest. What policies will be better for me? Who offers the best tax breaks for me? Who will manage the economy best for me? There is another way though. Voting God’s way. That’s not to say the Bible tells us which party to vote for. It doesn’t. But Jesus challenged our natural tendency to focus on ourselves. What did he say? Love your neighbour as yourself (Matthew 22:37-40). So how would He vote? He’d vote for the pollies and the policies that served the interests of others before himself. What policies are best for our community? Who offers the best tax package for the community? Who offers the best economic management for the community? The obvious question is, if I vote what’s best for others, who’ll look after me? Jesus has that covered as well. It’s Him. He’s focused on us. He has loved us, and will love us, and will look after us. That frees us up to think about others. At the end of the day we get politicians and policies that reflect who we are. We get the politicians we deserve. But the choice is in our hands. Which way will you vote? Glenbrook Swimming Club Receives Funding Boost

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Matthew Neale, President of Glenbrook Swimming Club last month, to announce that they will receive $17,500.00 in NSW Government funding as part of the 2015/16 Local Sport Grant Program. Funding has been provided for the purchase and installation of an electronic timing board at Glenbrook Swim Centre. Glenbrook Swimming Club has almost 150 members catering to swimmers of all ages and levels - from local club/recreation swimming to competitive national levels. “The main aim of this program is to increase regular and ongoing participation opportunities in sport and active recreation in NSW,” Stuart Ayres said.

“Sport is a huge part of our way of life and the NSW Government recognises that. “The NSW Government is committed to delivering the best infrastructure to the people of NSW and I look forward to seeing the benefits this upgrade will provide to the local swimming community,” Stuart Ayres added. Mr Neale said there are a number of capable swimmers in the club and the installation of this timing board will provide them with the encouragement and competitive edge they need. “This grant will be very helpful in driving the outer western swimming program to a more competitive status” added Mr Neale.

Do you give your child ‘accidental rewards’ for his/her undesirable behaviour? Accidental rewards include: • Social attention • Material rewards • Activity rewards Social Attention Smiling or laughing at your child’s undesirable behaviour will ensure that she will do the behaviour again. Spending a lot of time trying to reason with, or arguing with your child over his behaviour may also guarantee that you will see it again. Material Reward This is the reward that children get when they whinge and cry at the supermarket for a toy or chocolate, and they get it to keep them quiet. Activity Rewards An activity reward is where the parent redirects or distracts a child from her undesirable behaviour with an activity or a food treat, of directly addressing the behaviour. Do you use a lot of redirection or distraction to address your child’s behaviour? They are OK sometimes, but I worry when I see parents using redirection or distraction a lot because it indicates that the parent feels uncomfortable about setting boundaries and limits. Children need boundaries and limits to stay physically and emotionally safe, and when the parent has difficulties in this regard it can elicit extreme behaviour from the child. Remedy? Ignore minor mistaken behaviour. Stay calm, and give your child clear, calm instructions. It’s OK to set a boundary or limit for your child. It’s OK to say ‘no’. If you are in public, disregard comments and looks from other people – chances are they don’t have a degree in child psychology. Struggling? The Annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft + Collectables Show is Back!

The annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft and Collectables Show will be held on Sunday 26th June, 2016 at 10am – 4pm. Venue: Panthers World of Entertainment, INSIDE THE CLUB, Mulgoa Road, Penrith. There will be people at the front door to assist you with directions. Shoulder Pain – Could it be Arthritis? Many people visit the clinic with shoulder issues. Shoulder injuries and pain commonly result from many types of acute & chronic trauma, as well as many other medical conditions. Acute muscles & tendons injuries, slap tears, dislocations, as well as chronic injuries from repetitive strain & bursitis, are all common. It is important that the reason for shoulder pain is appropriately diagnosed. Then physical therapies can often help. Sometimes an operation may be required to re-attach tendons correct joint & capsule issues etc. On occasions what seems like a simple shoulder problem that should respond well to physical therapy does not. In these instances ongoing shoulder pain may not be driven only by the original injury. Here autoimmune processes should be considered as a possible cause. A real life example often best helps to illustrate this. Recently a client presented with two sore shoulders. There is ultrasound evidence of slight ‘wear & tear’ in the swollen tendons of her shoulder muscles, plus extensive bursitis. Pain is mainly in the front of both shoulders, the left is worse. She has very limited range of motion especially of the left arm due to the pain. The pain came on after a workers-comp return-to-work test for shoulder strength. The client is treated with muscle elongation therapy, techniques for several weeks. She has some improvement in pain & range of motion, but this is limited and does not improve further. She is advised that an autoimmune disorder may be at play here, and that diet may be important to her recovery. She initially does not want to make any changes and several weeks of extra therapy sees no further improvement. Eventually the client agrees to make the advised key dietary changes. Within one week of implementing dietary changes she has close to full range of motion and is very relieved. So how does this work? Simply put‌ making key dietary changes helped to calm immune activation in the gut and produced almost immediate results in her shoulders. Three Penrith players have been named in the NSW Metro Under 16 teams for the upcoming Australian Championships, which will be held in Kilsyth, Victoria from July 2-9. The Turnbull Government has listened to community views on flight paths for Western Sydney Airport and will not implement a ‘point merge’ over the Blue Mountains community of Blaxland. Western Sydney Airport, due to open in the mid-2020s, will bring game-changing opportunities to residents of Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. By the early 2030s, it is expected to provide nearly 9,000 direct jobs. By the early 2060s, this would increase to over 60,000 direct jobs. As well as giving local residents access to thousands of jobs in their local area, Western Sydney Airport will boost local tourism by bringing many more domestic and international visitors to the area, and offer more convenient air travel to the millions of people living in Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. But it is very important that the new airport operates in a way which addresses concerns about flight paths and aircraft noise so as to meet the expectations of the community. The Turnbull Government has determined, based on community feedback received to date, that the single merge point over Blaxland as illustrated in the draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will not be part of the airspace plans for a Western Sydney Airport.

This is not acceptable anymore, we need to demand jobs where we live and to have our kids and schools all in the same vicinity. That is the opportunity that this airport brings. This is an airport for us; this is infrastructure for our region. This week the Turnbull Government’s budget committed $115 million towards further works on Western Sydney Airport – demonstrating that we are getting on with the job of delivering this vitally needed project.

3 Tips on Sorting Loved Ones Stuff After Death One of the common questions I get asked after someone dies, is, “When’s a good time to sort through their stuff?” People shift between, “I need to go through their stuff ” and “I don’t want to do it”. When other family members are involved it’s really complicated. These people are dealing with other family members who are coping with their grief differently. Emotions run wild, fights ensue. There can be angry confrontations. So here are some tips on how to get through this tough time. 1. Family Meeting Get all the family together. Find out what everyone wants to do. Create a step-by-step plan showing when you’re going to meet, who is to do which jobs and if you want one person to have the final say. Make sure everyone is on the same page. 2. Discuss As You Go Even following the plan, problems can arise. If this happens discuss it and resolve it. You might need to leave it for a day or two and come back together to make a final decision. If emotions run too high, talk to someone who isn’t emotionally involved or, agree to disagree. It might also help if you consider what your loved one would have wanted done. 3. Make a List When you have the family meeting write everything down that you have agreed on, have everyone read and sign it.

“We’ve been through a number of designs and changes to the original plan but this longer than usual process was important for the community. “This government is about proper planning and that is exactly why we have taken time to get this project right.” The NSW Government will fund the full cost of the bridge, which is expected to be about $49 million. Design changes were made to the bridge during extensive industry consultation, to provide a straighter crossing. The preferred bridge design and location has also considered many unique constraints including heritage, flooding, property and privacy impacts, and the submarine high pressure gas main on the southern side of Victoria Bridge which supplies Blue Mountains’ residents with gas. Major work is expected to start in the second half of this year.
