PENRITH CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

Local Emu Plains Resident Joan Hayward has openly shared her story of overcoming Ovarian Cancer last year, in an attempt to help educate and help others facing a smilar journey. Joan courageously fought her disease and in doing so evoked a strong and positive attitude among those around her and others facing similar battles. Joan is the eldest of 8 children, a mother of 3 and a grandmother to 10. She was an active member of the work force for 54 years and has now been retired for the past 6 years. Dedicating her time predominantly to charity, Joan has volunteered at both Nepean and Governor Phillip Hospital through the Red Cross and taught exercises at Penrith Police Boys Club, Victoria Street Cottage and other venues. She is also an active member of the Arthritis Association and local View Club and is involved in other local activities including the Wrap with Love programme at Penrith Library. Joan’s cancer journey began in July 2015 when she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Since then she has undergone both surgery and chemotherapy. At the time of her diagnosis Joan says “my general health was good, I had no pain and had continued pg. 10

This month we explore the natural beauty that envelopes us here at the foot of the mountains, with plenty of stories exploring the outdoors. I love the curiosity of little children. A ball can be explored for ages. ‘What happens when I do this?’ They’ll latch on to something and twist and turn it every which way to understand it, and have a good giggle along the way. Not so far down the track they’re asking ‘Why?’. ‘Why do I need to have a bath?’, ‘Why is the sky blue?’. They’ll ask it so much that sometimes you think your head will explode. But they’re not trying to give you a headache, they’re just curious. Maybe as adults we could do with being a little more curious. We can be comfortable with how we live, with what we know, comforted by the opinions we’ve accepted, and those we’ve formed. We work hard, and we play hard, we have family and friends. But what if there’s more to life? What if there’s meaning and purpose and we haven’t cottoned on to, that links it all together, would we be smart to miss out? Jesus said, ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ (John 10:10) Curious? I’ve met lot’s of people Jesus has a huge affect on, a transforming affect on. If you think you know who he is and why he did what he did, and it hasn’t had that affect on you, then either something else is going on for them, or it might be worth digging a little deeper for you. Meaning? Purpose? They’re good questions to look for answers for, but even more important, reasons to live for! So every term we run ‘Christianity Explored’ for the curious. New Walking and Cycling Win for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Ross Fowler OAM, Deputy Mayor to announce a major boost to walking and cycling connections in Penrith thanks to a grant of $500,000 as part of the $39 million state-wide investment by the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government. More than 300 walking and cycling projects across the state are being funded to provide more opportunities for people to cycle and walk, better connect communities, improve safety for pedestrians and bicycle riders, and encourage more people to get active. Stuart Ayres said with cycling more popular than ever before and walking trips on the rise, the NSW Government was providing the infrastructure needed to support local communities. “This project will provide a huge boost for locals – completing the missing link of the Nepean River walking and cycling network, and providing better connections between local suburbs and to public transport hubs,” Stuart Ayres said. “This investment is about connecting people and places and making a difference to the way residents move around their communities.” “This funding of a shared user path along Nepean Avenue will certainly benefit the Penrith community, we are is pleased to again work in partnership with the State Government to help achieve Council’s long term plan for a connected and accessible city, this funding will enable construction of another link in this plan,” Deputy Mayor Ross Fowler commented. Transport for NSW and Roads and Maritime Services will now work with local councils across the state on the delivery of each project. This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started last month. ‘Escalation traps’ are one of the most common type of parent traps, and involve ‘child escalation’ and ‘parent escalation’. Child Escalation When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store. What is my child learning from this? Parent Escalation When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands. This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me”. What is my child learning from this? Combination of Parent and Child Escalation Yes, you can have a combination of child and parent escalation. The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved. Remedy? Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you. Join the Adventure! As part of Local Government Week 2016, Penrith City Council is giving lucky students from Years 7 to 9 in the Penrith Local Government Area, the opportunity to be Youth Mayor or Youth Councillors and take part in a mock Council meeting. Now in its fifteenth year this competition, the first in its new secondary schools format gives our future local politicians a chance to dabble in local government and democracy. Penrith Mayor Cr Karen McKeown said the competition provides a unique opportunity for students to learn about the role of Council in the local community. “We expect our Young Leaders from Years 7 to 9 will be very passionate and take part in spirited debate,” Cr McKeown said. “We know the young people in our community are passionate about democracy and want to have a say about where they live.” With Penrith proudly known as the Adventure Capital of New South Wales, the 2016 Youth Mayor competition has a Penrith tourism and adventure theme. To enter the competition, students need to outline what their best adventure in Penrith would be. Entries must fit on one A4 piece of paper, or be an audio visual file. Entries can be a story, poem, an artwork or comic strip. “I’m looking forward to seeing the entries,” Cr McKeown said. “We’re always looking for good advice from the community no matter the age of residents.” Entries must be submitted by Friday 27 May 2016. The winning Youth Mayor and Youth Councillors need to be available to attend introductory meetings at Council’s Civic Centre on Monday 27 June and Monday 18 July 2016. Environment Minister Visits Red Hands Cave

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith joined Environment Minister, Mark Speakman for a site visit to Red Hands Cave at Glenbrook in the Blue Mountains National Park. In 2015, Red Hands Cave was declared as an Aboriginal Place by the NSW Government in recognition of its cultural, social and historic significance of the site to the Aboriginal community. Stuart Ayres said the 45 hand markings, both left and right hands, and some children’s hand markings showcase some of the best Aboriginal rock art in the area.

The 12 metre-high Red Hands Cave was named in recognition of the red, orange and white stencils of aboriginal people’s hands which decorate the cave. Artists would chew a mixture of ochre and water and then blow it over a hand resting on the wall forming a stencil. Mr Speakman said the declaration of Red Hands Cave as an Aboriginal Place reaffirmed that the NSW Government is committed to the recognition and conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage.

 Swim all year round! Image supplied. Common questions I am asked when talking about the importance of learning to swim is “Why should children swim all year round? Surely it is only important to swim in the warm summer months? Won’t my child get sick?” These assumptions are completely incorrect! Learning to swim is a long term, ongoing process, and consistency is the key to the development and maintenance

of swimming skills. Attending swimming lessons makes up an important part of a child’s weekly routine throughout their infant, preschool and early school years, and should not just be limited to the summer months, as the skills and behaviours taught in lessons need to be practised all year round to allow children to develop at their own pace. Unfortunately the risks posed by drowning do not go away in winter, so neither should the lessons. Additionally, children under 5 are just beginning to develop muscle memory, and need constant reinforcement to retain skills previously learnt, so a break in lessons often results in a loss of skills. By taking a break in the cooler months, you may be wasting all the time and money spent on lessons previously. By swimming all year round children remain confident in the water, and remember, regular exercise helps to keep the body healthy and fight off winter illnesses. Plus swimming is great cross training for winter sports! Of course you must attend a swim school with indoor heated pools, and be sure to use common sense and remove wet clothing, towel dry and cover wet hair, and get warm (a hot shower is a must!) and dry before leaving the swim centre. It is important to remember that learning to swim is not just another option on the list of sports and activities available to children – it is an invaluable lifesaving skill – not a seasonal recreational activity. So, this winter, keep on swimming!

Site Establishment and Early Works Commence for Penrith Station Upgrade

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith last month announced that the NSW Government is getting on with the job of improving transport facilities at Penrith Station with site establishment and early works now underway. “The upgrades will be a boost for the Penrith community, with the improvements designed to provide a better customer experience and increase capacity for future growth in the region,� Stuart Ayres said. “The community will see more activity around the Station

as we start setting up the site compounds and early works on station platforms. “Once complete, customers using Penrith Station will benefit from new lifts and stairs to the platforms, an upgraded station concourse, improved bus, taxi, and kiss and ride areas, and upgrades to lighting and CCTV.â€? The improvements are being delivered as a part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure. Western Sydney customers have been major beneficiaries of the Program with a $150 million investment to upgrade six key Western Sydney stations, including Pendle Hill, Blacktown, Wentworth Falls and Flemington. More than 50 car spaces will soon be reopened for Penrith customers near the corner of Jane Street and Castlereagh Roads, following work to resurface the existing gravelled area and install new lighting, fencing and drainage. Planning is also underway to build a 300-space, multi-storey car park on the same block of land where the existing commuter car park on Lord Sheffield Circuit is located. Chickpea + Chorizo Stew Easy • Time 30 min • Serves 3

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 Tablespoon Olive Oil 250g Piece Pancetta, Cut Into 1Cm Cubes 2 Chorizo Sausages, Sliced 1 Red Onion, Chopped 1 Red Capsicum, Chopped 3 Garlic Cloves, Finely Chopped 1 1/2 Teaspoons Dried Oregano 1 Large Potato, Peeled, Cut Into 1.5cm Cubes, Cooked For 2-3 Minutes Until Almost Tender 400g Can Chickpeas, Rinsed, Drained 1/2 Cup (125ml) Dry White Wine 600ml Tomato Passata (Sugo, Available in Bottles from Supermarkets) 1/2 Cup (125ml) Campbell's Real Stock Chicken 1 Tablespoon Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley Crusty Bread, To Serve

Heat oil in a casserole or large, deep frypan over mediumhigh heat. Cook pancetta and chorizo, turning, for 2-3 minutes until starting to crisp. Remove and drain on paper towel. Drain excess oil and fat, leaving 2 tablespoons in pan. Return the pan to medium heat. Add the onion and capsicum and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Return the pancetta and chorizo to the pan with the garlic and oregano. Stir for a further minute, then add the potatoes, chickpeas, wine, passata and stock. Season, bring to the boil, then reduce heat to low and cook for a further 10 minutes or until the sauce has reduced and thickened. Garnish with parsley and serve with crusty bread.

As part of the Centenary of ANZAC Grants, Honour Roll Boards have been restored at Llandilo, Penrith, Orchard Hills and Emu Plains Public Schools. The restoration was undertaken through the guidance of The City of Penrith RSL Sub-branch. The restored boards have recently been reinstalled in the schools. The boards have been cleaned, re polished, with needed timber repairs and the gold lettering of names reapplied. The boards are significant, as they contain the names of former students who would go on to serve their community in war. The restorations ensure their contributions will live on for another 100 or more years. After her surgery Joan recuperated well however due to the chemotherapy she experienced hair loss and suffered terrible side effects. According to Joan, the worst was definitely joint pain and fatigue. Joan explained how she slowly worked through daily activities at a pace that allowed her to complete tasks without too much angst. She says “I would do short 10 minute chores. For example, I would put the dishes in the sink, leave them have a rest and go back later and do some more. If I changed the sheets and made up the bed, [I would do it] in about 3 or 4 actions.” Joan remained fully informed on her condition by attaining information from the Cancer Council and Ovarian Cancer Australia. Joan said “both organisations said they have support services if needed.” Joan remained incredibly positive throughout her journey. A motto she lives by is “focus on what you have achieved and can do, and not on what you can’t do.” Joan says that helping others is both a good thing for you and those you choose to help. She says “You will both feel better for the experience.” Bright colours and lipstick are two things that helped Joan to feel better on difficult days. The Cancer Council’s “Look Good Feel Good” programme helped Joan and many others to gain self esteem and feel good within themselves. Joan hopes that by sharing her story, other cancer sufferers “can benefit in some way to enable themselves to pick themselves up, to look good and to get back to their families and friends and to resume the activities they love doing.” She says “Take small steps and be very proud of your achievements, no matter how small they may be.”

Could Your Diabetes be Causing Your Back Pain? An estimated 917,000 (5.4%) Australian adults have diabetes of some type today. Self-reported diabetes more than doubled from 1.5% in 1989–90 to 4.2% in 2011-121. Importantly having diabetes greatly increases your risk for many back problems including: 1. Lumbar and cervical disc hernation2,3 (the old slipped disc) 2. Lumbar disc infections and inflammation4 which is associated with 3. Increased degenerative (Modic) changes to your vertebra 4. If you require a back operation the likelihood of: a. Success is much lower in diabetics, b. Further disc herniation is greatly increased5 and, 5. People with degenerative (type 1 Modic) changes show much poorer improvement levels6 So how does this happen? Most diabetics today have Type 2 diabetes, basically a dietary deficiency disease. Vitamins, minerals and other vital substances help the body build strong discs and vertebrae. With poor nutrition discs and bones (which are continually rebuilt) slowly become weaker. Eventually you lift something and a weakened disc herniates. A herniated disc develops blood vessels (as it repairs). These new vessels bring bacteria to settle in the disc. Now you have an infection which leads to further back issues. This is much more likely in diabetics because excess glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia) negatively effects overall immunity & hyperglycaemia makes infections more likely by: 1. Reducing white blood cells to infection fighting capacity so helping microbes to thrive in the body 2. Making skin (one of the key barriers in innate immunity) less competent 3. Negatively affecting the body’s ability to respond to antimicrobial therapy7 So now, as a diabetic you’ve set things up such that your chances of getting and keeping a back problem are quite high. Many of our patients with back problems also have diabetes. Now you can see why. The diagram below details changes we see in many of our diabetic patients with back pain. For these people clinical nutrition helps control (type 1) and regress (type 2) diabetes, while muscle elongation therapy treats their back issues. My Mother’s Day is Different! This year is the first Mother’s Day I won’t be seeing Mum. My mum died on Christmas Day 2015 and I miss her and will remember her on this special day. The things I miss about my mum: • Her smile, she had a smile that brightened the room • The way she jumped out of her seat when she saw me. Mum had dementia and mostly knew me as the coffee lady. • The way her eyes sparkled while we talked. • The way that every time she looked away from me, looked up and noticed me like that was the first time she’d seen me that day. She noticed me and said, “Oh there you are, how are you?” • Her happiness. • How people at the nursing home loved her and took care of her. There is so much more that I miss about her. This year I’ll be lighting a candle, having a coffee and remember my life with Mum. My brother sent this to me – “Mum, my mind still talks to you, my heart still looks for you, my soul knows you are at peace”. That gladdens my heart and makes me smile. If your mum has died I hope you find a way to remember her and do something to honour her memory. Be gentle on yourself and do what you need to do to take care of you. I hope you all have a relaxing, peaceful Mother’s Day.
