Masters Chases US College Dream Leonay resident Simon Masters is following his dream of one day becoming a Professional Golfer and has headed to the US to study at the College of the Canyons (COC) in California as a Student/Athlete for the next four years. The ambitious 19 year old has decided to fund College in the US himself, with no help or assistance from a scholarship. For the past year, Simon has been splitting his time working in the Leonay Golf Pro Shop during the day and at the Lapstone Hotel at night to help fund his dream. After undertaking a year of Tertiary Education beginning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in 2015, Simon heads overseas to complete his studies in the hope of becoming a Professional Golfer. “As a junior golfer playing in the 'Jack Newton Junior Golf' events, I had heard of other players older than me undertaking the collegiate golf path of being a 'StudentAthlete'. It wasn't very common and I wasn't quite sure what it involved so I conducted some research as to what College Golf was all about. I discovered that College Golf ď ˛ď€ Image | Simon Masters putting on the 18th green | Photo Courtesy of Noel Rowsell (www.photoexcellence.com.au)

Think Spring – Think Leura! Gardeners looking for inspiration for their own plots, or just wanting to experience the beauty of Spring in the Upper Blue Mountains, will again be flocking to the annual Leura Gardens Festival in October. The 2016 festival will have 13 magical gardens on show, including three new to the festival and several returning after a break. This year’s festival, the 52nd, will take place from Saturday, October 1 to Sunday, October 9, and will have several features which should make it even more appealing than usual. Firstly, although the main festival features three more gardens than last year, the price remains the same at $25 per person for an all-gardens ticket or $5 per person per individual garden. Secondly, the special pre-festival tours, for groups of 10+ people, will provide a private, escorted tour of four very special gardens, some of which will only be open in this pre-festival week, all for the cost of only $20 per person. These tours will be available in the week prior to the main festival, from Monday, September 26 to Friday, September 30. Thirdly, holders of the $25 all-gardens ticket will have unlimited access to the Music in the Gardens performances held every afternoon. Several new acts will be appearing as well favourites such as the Penrith City Big Band, and the Blue Mountains Ukelele Group. Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the plant sales centre which will this year feature plants from four new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools. Festival proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital. More details of this not-to-be missed event for garden lovers are available at www.leuragardensfestival. com.au or on 0431 095 279.

Making The Count Well the Census has come.... and not quite gone. You still have up till the 23rd of September to complete yours. And while it’s easy to be cynical about how the process went, what with the whole thing falling over on Census night, it’s a really valuable tool. Among other things the count helps decide where the electoral boundaries end up when we vote, and that’s pretty important. You want to make this count. And governments have loved a good Census since time in memorial. Why? To work out how to tax people. And the thing is, that’s exactly what was going on when Jesus was born. He was born during a Census. The Roman Emperor had ordered everyone to register in their own town at a certain time. That’s why Joseph and Mary and soon to be born bub had travelled to Bethlehem (Luke 2:1-7). How about that? The Bible ends with a kind of Census too. The picture is given of God’s throne room, and records being kept, and books being opened. Not to collect a tax mind you. This is the count of all those who’ve trusted Jesus and His message. One of the books is called the Book of Life. It’s called that for a reason. And the picture ends with all those whose names are found there having life with God forever. This is a Census where you want your name recorded! And the great thing is, we don’t need to wait to find out if our name is there. Jesus gives us all the invitation to check Him out, listen to what He says, look at what he did, and accept the gift he offers, the gift of being in this book. As a Church then, I guess we’re in the business of helping people fill out their Census. Not the Australian one though, this one traces back to an even higher authority. Lions’ ‘Sightfirst’ Initiative The Lions organisation was first formed internationally in 1917 in Chicago and since as early as 1925, has allocated part of its’ service activities towards sight; be it blindness prevention, sight restoration or other related matters, through an initiative labelled SightFirst. On a local level, the Emu Plains Lions Club follows this initiative by collecting old prescription glasses to ‘recycle’ them to those people in developing countries who do not have access to prescription eyeglasses and for whom just reading maybe a task they cannot perform. You can assist by looking around the house and locate any old glasses and donate them by dropping them in to the Lions collection boxes located at the following collection points; o Ibrahim’s Amcal Max Pharmacy at Lennox Village o Emu Plains Optical, Emerald St, Emu Plains o Specsavers in Westfield Plaza, Penrith o Penrith RSL Club o Edinglassie Retirement Village, Emu Plains o Precision Specs, 54 Queen Street, St Marys o helloworld, Lennox Shopping Village, Emu Plains o helloworld, 413-427 High Street, Penrith The glasses are collected and sorted at home by Sue Hunt, our Secretary, and her husband, Jack, a Friend of Lions, where the broken ones are removed. All glasses are carefully packed and then forwarded to the Lions sorting house in Clontarf, Queensland. Once they arrive at the sorting house, they are then graded by trained opticians, and are then packed for distribution overseas to Third World countries. During the first half of this year, Emu Plains Lions have forwarded 2,500 pairs of glasses. For any enquiries concerning the program, please contact Emu Plains Lions’ Secretary, Sue Hunt on 0409 393 711 or Jack Hunt on 0408 208 747.

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps…
|Frames, Decks, Pergolas|Granny Flats & Extensions
Parents sometimes fall into the trap of threatening children, giving up, or being inconsistent in their approach to child behaviour. Here are some more parent traps… • Discipline that is threatened but the parent does not follow through. When a parent does not follow through with a consequence, children learn that the parent doesn’t mean what s/he says. Some children can interpret a threat as a dare. The biggest threat I hear most often from parents is the one that starts about six weeks before Christmas – “if you are not good, Santa won’t bring you any presents”. This type of threat is ineffective because it is too far in the future. It sounds like a desperate attempt by the parent to control the child’s behaviour, and does not give the child immediate feedback on his/her behaviour. • Parents allow children to get away with the behaviour, until the parent becomes angry. When you are angry you are at risk of losing control and hurting your child. • Parents are inconsistent. One day we will follow through, the next day we let it go, and the next day we give up. Children need consistency, otherwise they do not know what is expected of them. • Parents aren’t working as a team. One parent may be permissive, the other parent may be too harsh. The parents may argue about their differences of opinion in front of the children. The best type of parenting for children has a high amount of warmth and care, and realistic expectations. Parents need to respond to their child’s behaviour in an immediate, consistent, and decisive manner. Children learn new skills and behaviours through being reminded and corrected on a daily basis. Consequences should be related to the child’s mistaken behaviour, and should not threaten a child’s sense of worth or self-esteem. Consequences also need to be able to be followed through, and issued when the behaviour is occurring.

was a great opportunity to combine my studies and play competitive golf on an organised schedule, something that isn't offered in Australia” he said. After studying at the College of the Canyons (COC), Simon hopes to gain a scholarship at another College. “I have ambitions to place well in my College tournaments and obtain a high GPA in my studies, so that I can transfer to a Top 100 Division 1 College for my third and fourth year on a good scholarship. My game still requires lots of work though. I feel I'm giving myself a great opportunity to take my golf to the next level that is required for professional standard” he explained. Leonay Golf Pro, Col Banham is confident that Simon has what it takes to one day become a successful Professional Golfer, “On behalf of all the Leonay Golf Club members and Emu Sports staff, I wish Simon every success in his plans for Golf and Business. He has great potential and will no doubt give it his best shot”.

A Mothers Story........... When my youngest son was 6 months old, knowing we had a pool, there was no question about whether or not we would start swimming lessons. Suddenly the beautiful pool in the backyard had become a deathtrap in my mind for my child who wasn’t yet able to swim. From that time on, swimming lessons have been a constant fixture in our lives, and, especially in Water Babies, swimming lessons represented one on one time, in the midst of a very busy life. When my daughter came along 2 years later, she was also enrolled in swimming lessons at 6 months of age. All was well, until she graduated to the level where I was not in the water with her during lessons - and then all hell broke loose! Thank goodness for the lovely staff , reassuring me that her screaming would subside if I just stuck with it – so I did stick with it, for 6 long weeks of constant screaming, with me standing outside in the carpark, feeling very emotional, and wondering if it was all worth it? But, with a pool in the backyard, swimming lessons were absolutely non-negotiable. Fast forward 3 years, to last week - when my girl was promoted to the next level, bragging to anyone who would listen - and I know I made the right choice to continue. Which is very good timing, as I now also have another toddler who is going through a stage where he is very resistant to

We can never protect our children 24/7, or ensure they are 100% safe around water – but we can do our very best to ensure they are able to swim, and equip them with the water safety skills needed to have the best chance of being able to cope if put in a tricky aquatic situation. As a mother, my best advice is to please persevere, summer and winter – swimming lessons are so very valuable. Image Supplied

HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
A Missing Link In Osteoporosis – Vitamin K Most people today don’t get enough vitamin K, yet this vitamin is vital for our bones. So what do we know about Vitamin K & why is it so important to bone health? We know: 1. people with low bone density or osteoporosis, or who suffer hip or vertebral fractures have much lower blood Vitamin K levels. 2. intervention studies show that vitamin K (especially with vitamin D) can increase bone density in osteoporotic people and reduce fracture rates 3. corticosteroid use reduces bone density in adults. Vitamin K can reduce such steroid-induced bone loss 4. warfarin (blood thinner) stops vitamin K working & reduces bone density. The longer one takes warfarin the greater the bone loss 5. vitamin K2 ‘directs calcium to your skeleton, while preventing it from being deposited in your organs, joint spaces, and arteries. Arterial plaque consists of calcium deposits (atherosclerosis), hence the term ‘hardening of the arteries’ So how does vitamin K work? Vitamin K helps bone cells make protein called osteocalcin. This protein binds calcium tightly, keeping it in the bone, ensuring good bone strength & density. People with low vitamin K levels still make the protein, but it can’t hold calcium, which drifts out of bone, and bones weaken. Where do we get vitamin K from? The highest levels of Vitamin K of any know food is Japanese natto - fermented soy beans. Next highest are green leafy vegetables - collard & salad greens, silverbeet, spinach etc. Cheeses (especially blue cheese), liver and some vegetable oils also contain significant amounts. So why aren’t we getting enough, where do we get it? The simple reason - our modern diet just doesn’t contain enough vitamin K. Most Australians eat little fermented food, they typically don’t eat Natto for breakfast! Before you say ‘but I eat salad greens’ you should know that although salad greens are high in vitamin K, only 4-13% of the vitamin is absorbed by the body from these foods as it is trapped in plants cell fibre. So you need to eat a huge amount of leaves to get a good dose. Is it best to take a tablet or eat right? It depends on what you eat & how you eat it! Ideally Vitamin K should come from the diet. A properly constructed diet contains, high vitamin K & D, calcium, protein & antioxidants, etc., all of which are important for building & maintaining strong bones at any age. Green juices are a great source of absorbable vitamin K, as is Natto. So
updating our tastes & getting into these foods may be a good idea. If you can’t, taking high dose supplemental vitamin K may be (an expensive) option.

RSPCA Cupcake Week 2016 A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted not just a Cupcake Day, but a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in August. Leo had an extra Pupcake for his First Birthday! Happy Birthday Leo! Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Kirsti, Kristie, Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Lizzie, and Jessica cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious slices, cupcakes and of course Pupcakes. Pony loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work.
Dog Lovers Show at The Hordern Pavilion Was Fantastic The Sydney Dog Lovers Show on Saturday 6th and Sunday
7th August 2016 at The Hordern Pavilion was fantastic! Camille Brandt attended the Dog Lovers Show as a special guest of Rose-Hip Vita and took Pony the Great Dane. Camille answered numerous questions from the public at the RoseHip Vital stall. Pony was the star of attention and loved getting patted by everyone! Check out the photo of Pony with Dr Katrina Warren and Dr Chris Brown on our Facebook page! Lizzie and Rachel also joined in on the fun and helped answer any questions. Rachel took her Labrador Molly to the Dog Lovers Show and she loved all of the attention from everyone. At least 1000 people patted Pony and Molly over the 2 days. Thank you to all our clients that came along and said hello. It was great to see familiar faces in a huge crowd! The Sydney Dog Lovers Show had over 150+ exhibitors showcasing dog products and services in Australia. So many freebies! There were so many celebrities, including Dr Katrina & The Wonderdogs, Dr Chris Brown, Dr Harry, James & Anthony (Village Vets Australia) and Peta Clark (TV and film dog trainer). What a great weekend! We can't wait for next year! Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Helping Kids Remember their Dad on Father’s Day Kids are often the forgotten grievers. Adults try to protect them from the tough stuff in life. Being a kid and having your Dad die will be one of the worst things that will ever happen. We can help and support kids through their grief, while helping you at the same time. When you help your kids remember their Dad, you’re helping yourself cope with your grief (as painful as that is). Here’s some activities that you and your kids can do together: 1. Tell each other stories about their Dad, the good, the bad and the ugly. This helps keep his memory alive. Let your child know that sometimes it’s difficult to talk about and that Father’s Day will be tough and upsetting. 2. Make a memory box. Select Photos, cards, and videos, anything
that reminds them of their Dad. 3. Make a scrapbook with your child. Gathering up photos and create something beautiful together. 4. Ask friends to write letters about your child’s Dad, get together and read the letters and present them to your child as a keepsake. 5. Create a secret Face Book page for friends and family only. The Last Word Life is tough and unbearable at times but grief changes our life forever. Choose an activity and work through it with your child. You’ll talk, laugh, cry and even learn to live life again. Remembering all Dads who are no longer with us on Father’s Day, (mine included). ve you Dad xx
