All Ready For School

Win!

This time of year at every infants school around the country, there’s the buzz of thousands of new students starting Kindergarten for the very first time. For Hannah Turner, the big day took place at Emu @ Lu dde Plains Public School. Melanie Turner, Hannah’s Mum, Rac nham already has a 7 year old son Peter at the school. The ew Pag ay second time around still doesn’t get any easier, “I’m e5 going to miss her. She’s been my little helper, but it’s a really good move for her. I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for Hannahâ€? Melanie said. Hannah previously attended a local preschool two days per week. She also participated in a preparation playgroup held at the school in the hall to familiarise her with the school environment. The program was held one morning a week in terms 3 and 4 last year. After meeting many new friends, the program helped to make that transition for Hannah that little bit easier. “Hannah is really excited to start school. She can’t wait to be with her brother. She also wants to learn how to read, so that she can read to her little sister Abigail, when Mummy can’tâ€? explained Melanie. What’s the biggest thing that she was looking forward to at big school? “Wearing my new glasses!â€? yelled Hannah. The magic of Kindergarten. ď ˛ď€ Hannah Turner, all ready for school.

We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics. We also welcome our newest column, Money Matters with David and Leonie on page 13. It's back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? Starting school is an important step in a child's life, refer to page 9 for some handy tips at this pivotal time . Many of our readers are small business owners, or know someone that is. For those in business, the start of a New Year is the ideal time to take it to the next level. Michael Todd (Business Advisor) provides some handy tips on page 13, to help make 2015 your year! It’s no doubt that Western Sydney is fast becoming the adventure capital of the state, with Luddenham Raceway opening for business in November, late last year. With two years of planning and eight months of construction, it’s the perfect place for the family to visit. “We wanted to create something for the whole family. Luddenham Raceway caters to adults and children with lots to enjoy” said Marketing and Promotions Manager Maria Vukmirica. Maria’s children Niki, Sascha and Simo also work at the business, making it very family oriented. There are two go kart tracks at the raceway, the ‘Pro Circuit’, a 600m asphalt track designed for the adults and a ‘Rookie Circuit’ designed for children aged from 8 through to learners. Prices start from $25 for 1x7 min race for kids aged 8-14 and $30 for 1x10 min race for adults 15 and over. There are over 30 go karts on offer to race, with participants able to access state-of-the-art electronic timing and lap times that are emailed and have Facebook integration. Luddenham Raceway also has facilities such as a function/meeting room, which make it ideal for corporate events. Honda Australia recently booked the venue to product test and train for their new CRV. There’s also a café and a party room onsite. With stage one complete, stage two construction will include a Paintball Park, whilst stage three will see a Car Circuit (CAMS Category C) and Driver Training Facility built. Both stages are due for completion later this year. Luddenham Raceway will be supporting the University of Western Sydney during ‘O Week’ this year, giving all students 10% off and

donating free track time for the university’s Solar Car. During this time, they will have stands at the Penrith, Parramatta, Bankstown and Campbelltown Campuses, with buses taking the students to the Raceway for promotions. “We get a kick out of seeing people happy. Seeing the smiles on their faces are priceless” said Maria. Luddenham Raceway are located at 849 Luddenham Road, Luddenham. Phone is (02)9834 2366 and email is info@ luddenhamraceway.com. Golden Arches I’ve been to McDonalds(TM) across Sydney, Australia, and in a couple of places across the world. When I go there its with the confidence that I know what I’m getting. I also know that no one else can put up a set of golden arches unless they’re the genuine article. The law enforcement agencies won’t allow it. The world’s religions aren’t like that. There isn’t an agency that checks everyone who claims to speak for a particular religion, are ‘kosher’. With recent events around the world done in the name of Islam I remind myself that just because someone claims to speak on behalf of a particular religion, doesn’t mean they do, or that their claims are true. It’s no different when it comes to the God of the Bible. And I’m saying that as a person who claims to speak on His behalf! But if a Christian leader, or a Christian for that matter makes a claim, how do you check it out? How do you know it’s the genuine article? Here’s my advice - ask these two questions. First, do they treat the Bible as the final authority, that it has the answers about what we need to know about God, about ourselves, and about how He has brought the two together through the Lord Jesus Christ. Second, does the person love others with genuine, servant hearted love. The answer to the second question shows whether the answer to the first is just lip service. If the answer to both those questions is a provable ‘yes’, you’ve got the genuine article. And if you’ve got the genuine article, don’t let that person or church go until you’ve checked out how your life can be transformed as theirs has. If we as a church can help you in that, we’d love to do so! Rev Roger Cunningham

Salt Aquariums have been the local aquarium store experts, specialising in reef aquariums, since 2008. The Emu Plains business, owned by Craig and Sharon Salt, sustained a tragic fire in December 2013. The fire started in the air-conditioning system and quickly spread throughout the whole store. Whilst the building survived, with the exception of the roof panels, unfortunately all the stock and shop fit was destroyed. The rebuilding process took many months of hard work and in November 2014 they reopened for business. “Last year was a tough year for us, but we’re back and we’re looking forward to this year” said Sharon Salt. For all your aquarium needs, including fish, coral and live rock, come in and visit the newly refurbished store at Salt Aquariums. Salt Aquariums are located at Unit 1, 84-90 Old Bathurst Road in Emu Plains. Phone is 4735 2366. Their website address is www.saltaquariums.com.au (look out for a new online shop coming soon). PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

I hear from many parents who are confused about their role in raising their kids. There is so much noise these days about parenting – from social media, friends, family, school, television. Some of it is misleading and not based on the research, some of it is cruel and unusual. How does one make sense of it all? Parents cry out “we didn’t get an instruction manual with this kid!”. To which I reply “your child is the instruction manual”. If you listen to your child, observe him or her, look at the situation from where he or she is standing, it all becomes a lot clearer. And parenting becomes a whole lot easier. When I talk with groups of children or individual children, and I ask them if they can talk to their parents about what is troubling them, more often than not the children say that their parents don’t listen to them, they dismiss them, or they lecture them. Unfortunately, a lot of kids don’t see their parents as someone they can go to and feel heard and understood. They don’t see their parents as helpful or supportive. Kids tell me what their parents say to them when they try to go to them with a problem – “suck it up princess” or “build a bridge and get over it”. When I ask parents “who do you want your child to go to when he or she has a problem?”, they always say “me”. But if you were a child and were told repeatedly “don’t bother me with this now” or “get over it” or “you’ll be fine” would you go back for more? I swear that if every parent learnt to listen to their child, I would be out of a job. And I would happily pack shelves at a supermarket knowing that our kids are healthy (physically, emotionally, socially, intellectually). I know that parents don’t do this on purpose. Every parent wants the best for their child. More often than not, we don’t listen to our kids because their big emotions are too much for us to hear. So we try to jolly them up, redirect them away from the pain, push them to see the brighter side. We think that if our children are having an emotion then it’s our job to toughen them up. But feeling heard and understood is one of the most precious things a human can experience, especially when it’s coming from the most important people in your lives – your parents or carers. The path to easier parenting is empathy – standing and walking in your child’s shoes. The next step is acknowledging how they are feeling about something - hearing them out. You are not always going to agree with them, and you are still the parent, so you make the big decisions. But quite often, children can surprise us with their wisdom and insight.

WHAT’S COOKING

Easy Valentine's Day Cookies Super Easy • Time 40 min

Back to School can be a Stressful Time The books are covered, the bags are packed and the uniform is neatly ironed and ready for the first day of school. For some children and young people, however, these practical things are not likely to be worrying them the most. The stress and anxiety some young people feel at the start of the school year can be overwhelming. Those first days can be some of the most exciting but Kids Helpline General Manager Wendy Protheroe said for others, this time is a scary and frustrating one. Ms Protheroe said transitioning into school is one of the most important stages of a child’s development. “This is the time that sets a bar in terms of how children develop coping strategies, problem solving skills and ways of seeing and understanding the world outside of their family, Ms Protheroe said. “They may be starting Prep, their first year of senior school or going into Year 12. Whatever the stage, it can sometimes be overwhelming with new challenges and uncertainties. As Australia’s only national 24/7 counselling and support service for young people, Ms Protheroe said Kids Helpline was there to help. The service has compiled a list of tips for parents to support their children during this time. Kids Helpline’s Top Five Back to School tips are: 1.

Ingredients • White melting chocolate • Wafer cookies • Variety of Valentine's Day sprinkles • Parchment or wax paper Method 1. Start by melting your chocolate as direct on package. I found this great tub of marshmallow flavoured melting chocolate that you pop right in the microwave. I loved the easy clean up! 2. While you are waiting for the chocolate to melt, gather your sprinkles and cookies. Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. This will prevent sticking while the cookies dry. 3. Once chocolate is melted, dip the top half of a wafer cookie. 4. Quickly sprinkle on your chosen sprinkles. 5. Place on prepared baking sheet to dry. Pineapple, Orange & Passionfruit Slushy

Be excited about the change. If you are enthusiastic and confident, your children are more likely to be as well. 2. Listen to your children. Let them know you’re interested in what they’re worrying about and what they’re excited about. 3. Plan - have uniforms and lunches ready the night before to avoid the early morning rush and any unnecessary stress. 4. If possible, visit the new school with your child before the first day to familiarise with the layout including bathrooms, lunch areas and playgrounds. 5. Start and maintain daily routines that will add structure and make your child more at ease (eg) dropping your child off at school at the same time each morning. Ms Protheroe said it was important for parents to make themselves available to provide support at critical times like starting back at school. However, Kids Helpline was there to help at any stage. Children and young people can call Kids Helpline about a range of issues, from making friends to starting high school, at any time. Kids Helpline, Australia’s only national 24/7 counselling and support service for young people, provides 24 hour counselling services to young people aged 5 to 25 years – free call 1800 55 1800 or online at www.kidshelpline.com.au.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article by: Karen Klein Healthy Living Clinic Ph: 0404 295 297 A: Unit 6/51 York Road, Penrith

Is WEIGHT LOSS one of Your Goals This Year? Then Triple Your Chances!! With the festive season over, getting back into routine often means slipping back into old habits, and this can be setting yourself up for failure. In order to achieve your 2015 goals you need to have a real plan. According to a study by Columbia University, people who determined a plan of action to achieve their goals almost tripled their chances of success! ‘SMART’ goal setting allows you to create such a plan, and thus transform your ‘lose weight’ resolution into reality. Here are the 5 simple steps: 1. Specific - define your goal eg I will lose 10kg through good nutrition and exercise 2. Measurable - break down your goal eg I will lose 0.5-1kg per week 3. Accountable - share your goal with a supportive family member, friend or practitioner 4. Realistic - keep your goal realistic eg to lose 25kg in 12 weeks is neither real nor smart! 5. Timeframe - set a deadline for your goal eg If I lose 0.5-1kg per week, I can hit my 10kg goal in 10-12 weeks Losing weight can be done many different ways, but gaining health and feeling great when you get to your goal is ultimately what we all want. A good health practitioner can offer support and advice to fast track you. YOU CAN DO THIS! The perfect time is NOW!

STRUGGLE with your WEIGHT? CONCERNED about your HEALTH? You could be healthy, trim and energised again in weeks!

Look at the fantastic results my 12 week Renewal Program is delivering:

“I started the program in November and have already lost 8kgs! Valentines Day Tips to Help You Survive Valentines Day. How to survive without your partner, especially on a day celebrating lovers? Some helpful tips: PARTNER UP WITH A FRIEND Let people know what you want. Talk to your friends about your loved one, remembering helps you cope with your grief. Make a new tradition of exchanging flowers, cards or chocolates with friends in the same position, celebrate your friendship. Laughter and chatting always helps, make the day yours, do what’s comfortable. RENAME THE DAY You could call it Love Day and take time for yourself. A day to focus on you. Just like your partner did, when they were around. JOURNALLING Write your feelings in a journal. This helps you sort out your feelings and emotions. Often you are overwhelmed by the waves of emotions and can't remember being happy. Journalling is a terrific way to get thoughts out of your head onto paper. When you close your journal, you often feel like a weight has been lifted. HONOUR YOUR LOVE Continue your Valentine's Day tradition each year, honouring the love you shared. LIGHT A CANDLE Write a letter, poem, song or a message. Write a card to them. Be inventive, there is no limit to what you can do. FOCUS ON YOU Take care of yourself. Eat well, exercise, go for a walk, do the gardening, have a massage. Do what you want to do, don't let others tell you what you should be doing. If it feels right for you, just do it.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson - Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Refinancing. Is it Really Worthwhile? Have interest rates fallen since you took out your mortgage? Has your financial situation improved? Would you like to access your equity for an investment, renovations or to consolidate debts? Refinancing can often be a good financial decision. You could save money on repayments or free up funds for other purposes. Refinancing can sometimes even let you take advantage of more competitive loan products that help you pay off your home sooner! But before you rush in, you should talk to us. We’ll help you to add up the costs involved and decide whether or not refinancing is the right move for you considering your personal circumstances and financial situation. In some cases, refinancing your mortgage could save you money, but in other cases, it could end up costing you more. What is refinancing? Refinancing is the process of paying off an existing mortgage by creating a new one. You can switch lenders entirely, or switch to a more suitable loan with the same lender. It could include combining a primary mortgage with a second mortgage, so that you only have one mortgage to pay and reducing the overall costs. What costs are involved? Understanding the costs involved with refinancing is an important part of deciding if this strategy is right for you. Sometimes, the cost of refinancing can cancel out any savings you might make on a lower interest rate. Talk to us about your goals If you’re thinking about refinancing for any reason, then it pays to talk to us about your goals and the best way to go about achieving them. Refinancing might be a good idea for you if your financial situation has improved since you first took out your loan, as this may help you get a better rate.

So what will you CHANGE this New Year? Michael Todd Business Advisor Youngest ever winner of Best BEC Advisor Australia Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury BEC

Twelve months from now, people will be looking back on 2015 and seeing the results of the choices they're making now. For some people, it will look pretty much like 2014. The same story, just one year older. It must be the case for most people. Another year, and more unfulfilled ‘New Year's Resolutions’. It is said that around 8% of these get achieved. If you had a good 2014, how can you build on that to make you and your business stronger in 2015. If you didn’t have a good 2014, what can you change or do to ensure it goes better for you? You have the most control over yourself. The blame game never works. So what do we need to do this year to make it a good one? Be proactive. The key to progress is taking control of it yourself. It is very important to be aware of what's going on around you as well. Stay abreast of industry changes and keep one eye on competition. Be confident and commit to your goals. A lack of confidence is one of the biggest obstacles to achieving both personal and business goals. You need to believe in your abilities, build on your strengths and address weaknesses when planning. Commit to doing whatever it takes to get you where you want to be, even if it involves some risk.

Start every day prepared and engaged. If you want to advance, you need to demonstrate that you're truly engaged in your business. It's not enough to physically be there at your desk every day. Show up mentally prepared and ready to take action. Being active, tackling tasks and planning ahead are the characteristics you need to take the initiative in your business. Use technology to help you. Business will continue to be driven by better business technologies. Employees also want technology to help them be more efficient and productive so embrace that. It may even lead them to do more with less and work smarter, not harder. So here’s to a new year, if that is what you need for a fresh start mentally. You have control to make sure everything comes together to make your goals a reality.

We see over 1,200 businesses each year, of all shapes and sizes, helping our clients achieve results like no other. If you haven't engaged with our BEC for our award winning business advice then now is a good time. Our clients are operating more efficiently, creating more jobs and achieving their goals all the time. From diagnostics to SEO, assistance with staff to social media, we can help your business grow.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027

$2100 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2014 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2100 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! This was our best year yet!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!! The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Guide Dogs NSW/ACT exists to enhance the quality of life of people living with blindness or impaired vision, by assisting in their achievement of independence through access and mobility with the use of Guide Dogs. It takes nearly two years to develop a playful pup into a responsible Guide Dog. Puppy Raising New puppies arrive at the Guide Dogs Centre at the age of approximately eight weeks. They work with purebred Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Labrador/ Golden Retriever crosses. These breeds are calm, loyal and intelligent, and have a proven track record as Guide Dogs. The pups are then placed with families that have been specially selected by Guide Dogs staff. They are called "puppy raisers". Over the next 12 months, these families will provide the pups with basic social skills, obedience and lots of fun! The dogs are visited regularly by the Puppy Raising Officers, who monitor their development and take them on training walks on their local area. In addition, the pups spend time at the Guide Dogs Centre, to help them become familiar with their next home. If you are interested in becoming a puppy raiser,

contact The Guide Dogs at www.guidedogs.com.au. Guide Dog Training When the pups are about 14 months old, they return to the Guide Dogs Centre. The instructors carefully assess every puppy on several long walks. Prospective Guide Dogs must be eager to work, with good concentration and initiative. They must also control the temptation to be distracted by other animals. Puppies that are selected to become Guide Dogs undergo an intensive five-month program to learn the complex skills required for their new job. They begin with simple commands and progress to more challenging tasks. These skills include: • Walking in a straight line without sniffing • Walking on the left-hand side slightly ahead of the trainer • Stopping at all kerbs • Waiting for a command before crossing roads • Stopping at the top and bottom of stairs • Avoiding obstacles at head height • Avoiding spaces too narrow for a person and a dog to walk through side by side • Boarding and travelling on all forms of public transport • Taking the trainer to a lift • Laying quietly for some time, particularly at a workplace or in restaurants • Refusing commands that may lead the trainer into danger - for example, if the trainer instructs the Guide Dog to walk them into a hole, the dog should refuse to walk forward when commanded. As training progresses, Guide Dogs learn to travel through confusing and crowded areas, such as shopping centres and busy city streets. In fact, experienced Guide Dogs can lead their users to a list of destinations. As you can imagine, this requires careful teaching so the dog learns each command in a complex sequence of events. Despite the hard work involved, Guide Dogs have a rewarding job indeed. These intelligent dogs lead an interesting life and enjoy its many challenges. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
