Prepare to Feed Your City

Join artist Sarah Goffman as she constructs a city made from non-perishable food and household consumables in our Main Gallery. The size and speed, at which it develops as a city, will provide a social commentary upon consumption, excess, waste and also, the generosity of our community and nation. At the conclusion of the project, the city will be dismantled and the goods donated to those in need through our project partners, Ozharvest and Penrith Community Kitchen. We are now accepting donations of non-perishable consumables and household goods ideal items include canned goods, buckets, cardboard boxes, and old shelving units. The deposit boxes are located at the Penrith Regional Gallery, Penrith City library, The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and Penrith PCYC. Artist Sarah Goffman states Artists are producers of content and in a postmodern fashion, re-examine the world in a consumer context. We are defined by our consumerism and become products ourselves, through branding and the adoption of marketer’s castings. The commodification of the individual is a phenomenon seen over the last century, through

industrialization and mass-production. Commercially packaged goods are available for consumers all over the world, and in purchasing a certain brand you are identifying with a label and a lifestyle choice. The trash and treasure of culture has been reinterpreted, re-staged, re-analysed and re-authored by today’s artists. Our relationship with stuff and materiality is a minefield of clauses, contained by accumulative materialistic culture and status oriented consumerism versus the desire for a minimal simplicity. We are surrounded by stuff, and have a responsibility to engage with it, “An assemblage owes its agenetic capacity to the vitality of the materials that constitute it.” Bennett, J. 2010 Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things Duke University Press, Durham North Carolina Walther Benjamin brought us concepts of consumerist activities where the producer and the consumer are both active participants in the economy. Benjamin, W. 1982 The Arcades Project Belknap Press Harvard University Press Cambridge, Massachusetts and London Confronting materialistic culture and making work about it, using it, as ready-mades and re-configuring it into the City of Plenty exhibition at PRG is not a static interaction, it involves donations (and donaters), and most importantly, recipients. The attachment to the reality of the endeavour in the interim is where the art comes in. Visitors to the Gallery can contribute to the building of the city and at various times during the three week residency see the artist in action.

Looking Forward to a Rest? The Easter long weekend is not far away. And you’re probably thinking it’s a good thing too. What with schools heading back, and all manner of things ‘getting underway’ again, we can do with a good rest. And maybe we feel it even more if we had a good time off during the summer holidays, our bodies saying, ‘I could get used to that’. That’s not to say that responsibilities and study and work aren’t worthwhile, and can’t be very rewarding. It’s more that the rest reinforces the value of our work. It’s that the rest shows us there’s more to life than our work. Jesus knew that. In fact He made us like that. And what He said about rest takes it to a whole new level. The rest we enjoy, the greater rest we long for, is living our lives in the light of knowing God. Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30). Now Jesus wasn’t just saying something soothing to make us feel relaxed, with these words. He was strong and worked hard. And His greatest work? He did it on the Easter weekend, so we could rest, not just for a long weekend, but through life forever with God. Rev Roger Cunningham

Come and Visit the Airing of the Quilts Show

Each year, the Caring Hearts Community Quilters collectively put their talents together to make approximately 30-35 quilts. These amazing and colourful quilts are made for the Nepean Hospital and are used in the Rehabilitation, Palliative Care and Neo-Natal Wards for patients. This generous and caring group also supply Blue Mountains Hospitals, Hawkesbury Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Little Wings, Women’s Refuges in both the Hawkesbury and Penrith areas as well as the Blue Mountains Cancer Support. The busy ladies are calling on help from the public as new members are needed to help keep up the supply of quilts. If you are a patch worker and have time, fabric or UFO’s to donate, they would be welcomed. Anyone with quilting experience that can help long or short term would also assist the group. The ladies hold a Quilt Show each year, which serves as their yearly fundraising event. They invite you all to attend. The details are:

Vale Eva Bory An Olympic legend in the pool, and long-time campaigner for teaching kids to Swim, Eva Bory has passed away in Arizona. She was 77. For many who grew up in the 1970s, Eva and Alex Bory were well known identities in Sydney’s west. They were often seen swimming coaching at Merrylands, Bondi Baths and at their swim-centres in North Rocks, Toongabbie and Emu Heights. Eva would specialise in stroke technique with the youngsters – while Alex was relentless in encouraging the older kids to swim against the clock. Eva Bory’s story is remarkable. She was born in Hungary and taught herself to swim in a lake. At 11, she began training – and by 1955, she held the world record for the 100 metre backstroke. She first came to Australia as part of the Hungarian Olympic squad in 1956 – where at 19, she competed at the Melbourne games. She was part of a relay which broke the world record for the 4x100m medley. After the games she sought, and was granted, political asylum. By 1958 she was in Sydney teaching children to swim. In 1961 she teamed up with Forbes Carlisle – and together they produced the Carlisle Swimming Programme and Methods – a cornerstone of competitive swimming, still in use today. She would go on to write books including “Teach Yourself to Swim, which was published right across the English speaking world. Alongside Don Talbot, she began opening and running her own swimming centres, initially at Toongabbie, and, by 1973 at Emu Plains. There, she was actively involved in the school, before moving to the US in 1984. Despite the move, she retained strong connections with the swimming centre, visiting twice a year. Her services and commitment to swimming were recognised by the Swimming Hall of Fame. Her Penrith legacy is a swim centre in her name that trains around one thousand young Australians every week. The Eva Bory Centre has not only seen the interest in swimming grow throughout the region, its led to the opening of a sister facility, the Nepean Aquatic Centre. While she has passed, her dedication to the Penrith community will see her legacy live on, and inspire a new generation to get out there – and go for gold. Source: www.facebook.com/liberalforlindsay

PARENTS CORNER

New Year 7 ‘Buzz’ with Excitement

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Do you know a child living in a home where there is a lot of yelling and swearing, throwing things, pushing or hitting? This is called family violence. However, family violence is much more than physical abuse. It also includes: Emotional abuse (such as manipulation, isolation, put-downs, mind games); Financial abuse (withholding money to buy groceries, and other essential items); Sexual abuse; Threats of violence and revenge; Property damage, smashing belongings; Harming pets. Witnessing family violence can be very upsetting and frightening for children. These children live in a “climate of fear”. Family violence is an abuse of the intimate, trusting and safe relationship that a family should provide. 1 in 4 families in Australia experiences family violence. Apart from the emotional impact on individuals, families, and communities, family violence costs the Australian economy $13 billion per year. Many children who witness family violence have been found to have higher levels of behavioural and emotional problems than children who live in a safe and nurturing home. While most children escape without physical injury they may bear emotional scars which in many cases can last a lifetime. They may have poor physical and mental health as adults and their early experience of living with violence may influence the relationships and lifestyles they choose as adults. Violence at home can make a child feel really sad, angry, helpless and confused. Often children think they have done something to cause the violence in their family. Children living with family violence spend a lot of time and energy worrying and feeling anxious about things that they shouldn’t need to. Children should be free to spend their time and energy on growing, playing, learning, feeling safe and loved, and exploring relationships. Children need: • Protection from physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse • To know that bullying, abuse, and violence is not OK • To know that other children have had similar experiences • Encouragement to talk about their feelings and worries • Reassurance that it is not their fault • Support from a trusted adult • Good role models for managing anger and solving problems • Support with schooling • Professional help for behavioural and emotional problems • To know where they can get help in an emergency. Support for the abused parent can improve the parent’s capacity to protect his/her children. Family violence is just plain wrong. There are no possible reasons that can justify one partner being abusive towards another partner or a parent being abusive to a child. Often, we don’t know what to do to help children and families in our neighbourhoods and communities. If you hear family violence going on in a home near to you, the first thing you can do is call the Police. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can ring the Domestic Violence Line for help on 1800 656 463. The Domestic Violence Line is a statewide free-call number and is available 24 hours, seven days a week. It is time for both men and women to say “enough” – violence is never OK.

Kodi Mawby and Shelby-Rose Fuller (ex Leonay PS) First Day at McCarthy Catholic College

The rain came tumbling down but nothing dampened the spirits of the new Year 7 students embarking on their Day One secondary education adventure at McCarthy Catholic College. Hasty goodbyes were said between parents and children and even hasty hugs and fleeting kisses were snatched under the torrential downpour. However, the wettest January in fourteen years, merely became a footnote in the lives of families and the college. Welcomed by Principal Ms Robyn Meddows and a large number of teachers and senior students, Year 7 students soon found their way into a range of learning activities. Ms Meddows had outlined to Year 7 the high expectations of the college and challenged students to achieve their potential – as had the 2014 Year 12 students who had gained the best HSC and ATAR results in the history of the college. Year 7 students buzzed with excitement all day. For Kodi Mawby (ex Leonay PS) the opportunity of “making new friends at McCarthy” was very important. However, Shelby-Rose Fuller (ex Leonay PS) was more interested in having “classes with different teachers”. Siobhan Stevens (ex Emu Plains PS) was excited about the whole prospect of “different subjects and learning new things”. All three Year 7 students told of mixed feelings about leaving primary school, finishing holidays and the excitement of starting their secondary education at McCarthy. There was one benefit of the heavy rain. The tears and smiles on some parents’ faces were camouflaged by rain water sloshing down faces. And a few parents were spotted with big grins – the last child off to high school! Continued from pg. 1.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article by: Karen Klein Healthy Living Clinic Ph: 0404 295 297 A: Unit 6/51 York Road, Penrith How can you beat today’s biggest health problems? An unhealthy lifestyle is the common contributor to today’s biggest health problems. Today, chronic conditions such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity are our biggest killers. Here are 3 top recommendations to keep your heart, mind and body in optimal health! 1. Healthy Diet – Well that’s no surprise! But you really do need to quit the junk and fast food. Your heart, brain and overall health are harmed by such foods high in sugars, trans fats, additives and salt. There's no getting around it. Replace them with real foods like fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil eg the Mediterranean diet. 2. Daily Exercise – You brush your teeth every day and exercise is equally as important. Turn off the TV and computer and take a 30 minute walk, jog, swim, exercise or yoga class. You don’t have to go overboard - even 10 minutes here and there during the day counts. Just get moving! 3. Weight Loss – Studies show that too much body weight puts your health at greater risk. When you take in more calories than you burn, you put on weight. When your body is deprived of important vitamins and minerals, you become deficient in the nutrients essential for effective weight loss. It’s that simple! Getting back to your ideal body weight through healthy eating and exercise will help you avoid serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, obesity and stroke.

Last month, Nepean Food Services, facilitated by Tanya Hetherington, hosted the February Friendship Day. The group of 14 guests were treated to an exciting morning of activities that centred on ‘friendship’ and finished with lunch with one another. The luncheon began with a welcome and a picture activity. The group chose a friendship picture that best reflected themselves and their thoughts on friendship. They prepared a friendship poem together that they were able to take home and share with family members. The group, led by Tanya, then put their artistic flair and creativity to the test and made ‘friendship bracelets’. Lunch was then served, with friendship slides and music played in the background. The Grief of Miscarriage The inconsiderate things people say after a Miscarriage. Miscarriage is a difficult grief to deal with. Many clients have told me the inconsiderate comments said to them following a miscarriage, such as, “At least you know you can fall pregnant and “It’s great that you didn’t get too far into your pregnancy. What you can do after a miscarriage: Share your story As 1 in 4 pregnancies result in miscarriage, there are a lot more women out there to share your story with and they with you. Healing Talking about your grief helps you to heal and deal with it. Understanding your own grief and what you need to do will help you cope with your “New Normal. Create support Share your story, be vulnerable and connect with others who have suffered a miscarriage. This will help create a positive, supportive community. Normalising grief You can help the general community to understand what grief after miscarriage is like. People often believe that you shouldn’t be grieving because it wasn’t a baby yet. Be sure to share your story with others Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. As a specialist in her field she has helped people to move through their unresolved grief, to feel less isolated and alone. Using her training Cait seeks to empower her clients to breakthrough and rediscover the joys of a full and rewarding life. To help them come to terms with their “New Life without their loved one. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD. Pop over to Cait’s website www. indigotherapies.com.au or phone Cait on 0434 865 429.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson - Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Rate Cut Fever – But will you Benefit? The Reserve Bank has reduced the cash rate to its lowest level in over 60 years and the banks rapidly passed on the cut in full, with one of the majors actually reducing their rate by more than the cut. And it wasn’t only the variable rates the fell, fixed rates also tumbled indicating that the banks think that we are in for a prolonged period of low rates. On top of this, the competition between the banks is such that never seen before discounts and “under the table” rates are being offered to attract new clients. There has never been a better time to review your loan to see what’s on offer. Reducing the rate on a $350,000 loan by just 0.50% will save you over $100 per month, or reduce the term of your loan by nearly three and a half years. At Great Aussie Dream we will review your current loan free of charge and with no obligation. If you decide to refinance we will take care of all of the paperwork making the process simple and stress free. Great Aussie Dream is your local Mortgage Broker and is the most awarded in Australia, so why trust anyone else? Call us today on 4733 8592.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital. You can download the entry form from our website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy. Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital. All entries must be received by 7pm on Wednesday 1st April 2015. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope. Winners will be drawn and notified at 10am on Thursday 2nd April 2015. Check out our website for more information. www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Colouring in Competition In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All
