Little Wings First Flight For Nepean Hospital
r Little Wings bringing hope for families
Freshly Home Made from Scratch
Issue 85
Last month, local charity, Little Wings, completed its first flight service for Nepean Hospital to get a family back home to Brisbane. The McGonigle family were down from Brisbane for holidays when 12yo Kieran became unwell. After initially seeking treatment for stomach pains, Kieran became very unwell and was taken to Nepean Hospital with a severe perforated appendicitis. Following his operation he was required to remain in hospital for another 5 days which meant the family could no longer use their return flight tickets home. Little Wings has been in discussion with Shannan Waddups who is the Nurse Unit Manager – Paediatrics at Nepean about providing support for children attending the hospital. Whist most of Little Wings flights support children attending cont. Pg 11.

Australia Day Awards recognise Penrith’s best The bushfires that devastated the Blue Mountains in October showed Penrith’s Citizen of the Year Peter Camilleri at his best. Mr Camilleri turned his business, Penrith Storage King, into a collection point for donated goods to help those who had lost their homes. The business also operated as a drop-off point for water and supplies for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and State Emergency Service (SES). Mr Camilleri is one of seven City residents who were awarded Australia Day honours at a formal dinner held at the Civic Centre on Thursday, 23 January. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Mr Camilleri remained on call after hours throughout the fires to assist those who needed help. “It is this generosity of spirit that has led to Mr Camilleri being awarded Penrith’s Citizen of the Year,” Cr Fowler said. “Mr Camilleri continued to run his own business during this period, while addressing the needs of those affected by fire. “He even donated storage space to fire victims, so they could keep their sentimental items safe. It was an incredibly generous effort overall.” Bede Johnston was awarded Penrith’s Sports Person of the Year. Mr Johnston competed in the Ironman Australia Triathlon in Port Macquarie in May 2013 in memory of his sister Kate who lost her battle with Juvenile Xanthogranulomas, an extremely rare blood disorder, in 2012. He raised over $5000 for the Leukaemia Foundation which supports those who have the blood disorder, as well as their loved ones, and qualified for the World Championships that were held in Hawaii last October. Local Appreciation Awards were also awarded at the Civic Centre ceremony to Robert and Joyce Moynahan, Phil Lacey, Elizabeth Reibelt and Gina Field. Cr Fowler said award winners were nominated as outstanding citizens by friends, family and peers. “Mr and Mrs Moynahan are a volunteering dream team and have worked tirelessly for many organisations over many years,” he said. “Mr Lacey is being awarded for his dedication to the community, particularly Rotary. Miss Reibelt has been a volunteer leader in the Scout movement for more than 30 years.” “Mrs Gina Field has been awarded for her demonstrated excellence in business and voluntary roles. “All recipients richly deserve recognition for their work in our community and I thank and congratulate them.”

What do you expect in 2014? I know it’s February and the whole New Year thing was so long ago, but could it hurt to ask again? We all have expectations for the year ahead. Expectations at work, and of what we’ll earn, and of how we’ll spend it. Expectations for family, and of milestones, and of how we’ll get on together. Have you taken a moment to reflect on your expectations? Expectations of yourself? Expectations of others? When I reflect on my expectations a couple of things become clear to me. I don’t have the power to control others. I can’t even control my own circumstances. The best I can hope for is to
control my responses. And even then, there are times I’ll get it wrong, and do the wrong thing. Will I then be a person who is willing to say I got it wrong, and ask for forgiveness? And when I get it right, is that something to be proud of, or is that just doing what I should have done.... What I’m thankful for again as 2014 is now underway is that there is a guide to life and my expectations. Jesus said, ‘I have come so that they may have life, and have it to the full’. He doesn’t mean he’s a genie who fulfils my wish list. Instead he reveals that He’s the Lord who has power over life, who knows me, knows I need help and forgiveness, and longs to bless us with it. Wouldn’t that knowledge make all the difference to 2014? Rev. Roger Cunningham

Top Results, Top Students! The St Paul’s Grammar School, Penrith, class of 2013 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students received their results last month, highlighting the long history of high academic achievement at St Paul’s. Principal Paul Kidson congratulated students, families and staff, noting that these outstanding results come from their collective efforts. Results released showed that International student, Sereibanndith Seang of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was the Dux of St Paul’s from the class of 2013 with an IB score of 43 out of a maximum possible 45, equating to an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 99.60. A total of seventeen students achieved IB scores of 37 or above, equating to ATARs above 95. The number of students in the cohort this year was 63. IB Diploma results are not included in school rankings based on HSC scores and as such do not report that St Paul’s Grammar School is one of the best schools in NSW in terms of academic results, in that two thirds of our Year 12 graduates this year were IB Diploma Candidates. Other top scoring IB Diploma students included Nicholas Coulshed of Mount Riverview, Lachlan Johns of Blaxland and Veronica Mitchell of Orchard Hills, all with IB 42 (ATAR 99.25); School Captain Susannah Hoffmann of Bligh Park and Sarah Smith-Wade of Springwood both with IB 41 (ATAR 98.70) and Ryan Lin of South Penrith with IB 40 (ATAR 98.05). St Paul’s students have a long tradition of exceptional IB results with many scores in the 40’s (ATAR above 99) in the past seven years. St Paul’s long-term average is an ATAR of 92 from over 600 IB Diploma graduates. The world average has an ATAR equivalent of 80. Lachlan Johns from Blaxland (IB 42: ATAR 99.25) hopes to study Medicine at the University of New South Wales, University of Western Sydney or Newcastle having sat for the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test) in mid-2013. Lachlan wants to work with people and has a love of science, and naturally sees that medicine is a great career where these interests intersect. St Paul’s offers a continuum of IB education from Pre-K-12, the only school to do so in NSW. It was one of the first schools to offer the IB in Australia, beginning with the Diploma Programme in 1990. It was the first school to offer the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes, being authorized by the IB Organization to offer both in 2003, becoming the third school in Australia to offer all three IB Programmes. St Paul’s remains the only school in NSW to offer all three IB Programmes. Each year half to two thirds of the St Paul’s Year 11 and 12 students have studied the IB Diploma Programme.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Have you, as a parent, decided that you need to look after yourself a bit more this year? ‘Looking after yourself’ is one of the five keys to positive parenting in the Triple P programme. You’ve got to live it to give it. What small thing can you do today to take care of yourself? Every day, do one small thing that you enjoy and that satisfies your hands, warms your heart, or feeds your mind. How we feel about ourselves affects how we parent. Some parents have said to me that they only care about what happens for their kids and they no longer care about themselves. They have said “my life is over now, it’s all about the kids”. I urge all parents to take care of themselves, because that is all about the kids too. Your children have mirror neurons in their brains. Mirror neurons help us to detect emotion in other people. If you think you can hide your sadness, depression, anger, annoyance, or frustration from your children, think again. Your children are like a radar for how you are feeling. Why? Because their emotional and physical safety depend on it. But not only that, if your child is picking up that you are sad or angry, they blame themselves. Deep down inside, they think they are the cause of your anger or upset, no matter how many times you tell them that they are not. And that’s not good for their emotional and mental health. When I was teaching a social and emotional programme in a disadvantaged school, and I asked the students from preschool to Year 6 to name some emotions, they all said (even the littlies) “happy, sad, depressed, and angry”. They could only name those four emotions, because that’s all they heard their parent/carer saying and what they saw them feeling. Diet and exercise are important to you too. Choose the salad sandwich over the chips. If you are not that keen on gyms or jogging, incidental exercise is good too, such as walking to school to pick up the children, or doing squats and stretches whilst hanging the washing on the line. When do you take the time to focus on your adult relationships? Many parents tell me they feel isolated and judged in their role as parents. Who supports you whilst you have the important job of supporting your children? Where can you get support from caring and interested people? If you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, or having persistent difficulties in your relationships, seek professional help and counselling. You owe it to yourself and your children to be as well as you can be (intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially).

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Rhonda Rolfe Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au
Stress – What is it? Stress typically describes a negative condition that can have an impact on ones mental and physical well-being. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Stanford University Medical School and numerous health experts, the number one killer on the planet is STRESS! Up to 95% of all physical and nonphysical health problems have stress as their origin. Every time we have a health problem we should be asking, "What stress is causing this, and how can I eliminate it?" Stress is known as the silent killer. It leads to a multitude of health problems including high blood pressure, depression, anxiety disorders, mental illness, heart attack and stroke, etc. So you don’t think you’re stressed? Believe it or not, you can be suffering from stress without realising it. In this fast paced world we all have learned to battle on regardless. We don’t feel stressed because how we feel has become “normal” to us, but it is far from healthy. What Are The Effects of Stress? Stress can affect not only the physical body, but also the mind, emotions and behaviour. It can show up as headaches, aches and pains, fatigue, eczema, weakened immune system, asthma, bed wetting, stomach ulcers, forgetfulness, impaired judgement, nightmares, negativity, loss of interest, irritability, low self esteem, conflict in relationships, loss of appetite, overeating – and the list goes on. Stress Knows No Age Barriers Stress can and does affect people of all ages from babies through to the very elderly. If you, or someone you care for, are showing signs of stress, don’t wait until it’s too late. A simple technique called Emotional Freedom Technique, or tapping therapy is gaining momentum world wide for its effectiveness in reducing stress levels.
Still blooming at 50 years! Back, bigger and better than ever – is the promise of the Leura Gardens Festival Committee for the 50th Anniversary Festival which will take place from 4th-12th October 2014. Festival garden owners and committee members gathered at the Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort in December to celebrate the success of the 2013 Festival and officially announce the Gardens for 2014. President Ray Wiles said that over 8000 visitors attended the Festival during 2013, resulting in the Committee being able to allocate $112,000 to support the Blue Mountains Hospital and other local charities. Ray paid tribute to the garden owners, presenting each of them with a certificate in recognition of the huge commitment involved in preparing their gardens for show. The 2014 Festival features a line up of 11 gardens, including many favourites such as the Waldorf, the Everglades, Dead End House, Rustlings, Brabourne and Ewanrigg. Making a welcome return will be Ilion (and Waitangi), the Braes, Blue Mist, Tanglewood and newcomer Blue Vista. In addition to the open gardens, the Committee will be working with Garden Clubs Australia, the Leura Village Association and major sponsors to develop a program of special events and celebrations to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Festival in 2014. What is the right investment for me? This is one of the most common questions I am asked as a financial planner, and like most things in life there is no simple answer! A number of factors determine the appropriate investment for an individual, the time horizon of the investment, the requirements for the investment and the tolerance for risk of the investor. The aims of financial planning investment recommendations is to provide reasonably accurate outcomes and as such are more conservative in nature than other investments such as direct shares or a property development, which have the potential for very large returns in a short period - however may also lose money. The foundation for conservative investment is diversification. By investing in a number of different assets, you are able to reduce the risk of the investment, the asset classes are cash, fixed interest, property, Australian Shares and International shares. Each of those asset classes offer different growth and income characteristics and have different levels of risk. As a basic rule the greater the risk the greater the potential return. Within each of those asset classes we also diversify, particularly within the more aggressive investments, such as shares and property, for example not only do we invest in a number of shares, we invest in different types of shares, different industry, life stages and alike. The other investment fundamental is the use of risk profiles. Essentially the financial planning industry has identified a number of risk profiles ranging from defensive (conservative) to high growth (aggressive). These risk profiles each have a predetermined level of risk and volatility that is expected for each profile. These profiles have an investment structure which is statistically modelled to provide the highest return within the expectations for the risk profile. Each individual client has a risk profile assessed, the most important factor in determining how aggressive we are with an investment is the length of time, the basic premise is the longer the investment horizon, the more potential for growth assets. The theory being, statistically speaking, the longer the investment length the closer to long term averages the investment will achieve, and as more aggressive portfolios have a wider range of results, a longer time frame is required. Or more simply speaking, you have a longer time to recover from a bad year. The length of time the money invested sets a maximum level of growth, however not all investors will be comfortable with the level of volatility throughout an investment despite the long investment horizon. A financial planner will help determine an investor’s natural aversion to risk and adjust the risk profile accordingly. The final piece in the puzzle is the requirements of the investment. If the investment is to achieve a specific goal, this may require the investment to be adjusted. Any investment that requires income from the investment (EG. Retirement income) will have to be invested to achieve this goal, a focus on income generating products will be necessary. It may be necessary to take more risk than the client would like if the client needs a higher return to achieve financial goals. The reverse is also true; there may be no need to take investment risk if you will have sufficient savings to achieve your goals with a lower level of volatility. If you are interested in receiving advice in relation to developing an investment plan, especially in relation to superannuation (an often neglected area), please contact Future Financial Services for advice.
Time for a Doggie Detox As many Australians vow to detox following the silly season, they should also consider their pets waistline as part of their New Year’s resolutions urges Debbie Harrison, Store Manager of Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa. With an alarming 41% of dogs and 33% of cats in Australia considered to be obese according to Greencross Vets1, Petbarn is encouraging pet parents to look out for pets that may have gained weight over the festive season due to additional scraps and snacks at the dinner table. Debbie Harrison, Store Manager of Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa says, “Pet obesity is a serious problem - animals that are overweight or obese need to lose weight immediately to reduce their risk of heart disease, digestion problems and even cancer.” Debbie, Store Manager of Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa says one of the simplest solutions for pet owners is to ensure they are feeding their pets the right amount for their size and breed and to opt for a sensible, healthy diet of natural food with fewer preservatives. “It’s what you might like to call a ‘doggie detox’ New Year’s resolution for your pet,” Debbie says. “We’ve found that pets are increasingly facing issues that humans face such as obesity and health problems as a result of what they’re eating.” In addition to diet, regular exercise plays an important role in weight loss for pets, with the added benefit of helping the pet owner get a regular dose of physical activity. “It’s common sense, but the main piece of advice is to introduce healthy habits in terms of nutrition and exercise for your pets as soon as possible to avoid health issues later down the track,” Debbie says. For more tips on the most appropriate pet foods for different animals or for pet advice visit Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa, T380 Penrith Homemaker Centre, 13 - 23 Patty Place, Jamisontown or call (02) 4733 5930. With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
New Veterinarian and 2 New Veterinary Donation to The Guide Dogs for Nurses!! Santa Photos With Your Pets We have continued to grow over the last 4 years since I bought Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and we have hired a third veterinarian and 2 new nurses. How exciting! Theresa is our third veterinarian and she started here in November 2013. Theresa grew up locally with a well recognised appreciation for all animals. After beginning her animal studies with a degree and a masters in wildlife ecology from The University of Sydney, Theresa pursued her veterinary interests by moving to Perth and completing her veterinary degree at Murdoch University in 2012. Theresa is enjoying settling back into her life on the east coast with her Doberman, Bella, and her well travelled cat, Pax (who made frequent journeys between Sydney and Perth!). She also enjoys keeping her horses, chooks and reptiles. Sheridan is one of the new veterinary nurses. Sheridan completed certificate IV in veterinary nursing in 2009. Sheridan started her veterinary nursing career in 2007 at Pittwater on the Northern Beaches. She had a very enjoyable and fulfilling 6 years there before moving to the Hawkesbury and starting at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. In her spare time she loves to get out camping, four wheel driving and abseiling. Sheridan’s love for animals began at a very early age and since then she has had many birds (budgies, cockatiels, ring neck and eclectus parrot), mice and fish. Sheridan finds veterinary nursing to be a very rewarding career especially when giving advice to clients to help them provide better care for their pets. Rachel is one of the new veterinary nurses. Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE and she hasn’t looked back since. She enjoys every aspect of being a Veterinary nurse, especially seeing our loved ones recover to their usual happy selves. She has always loved animals and knew she wanted to work in a job that involved helping them. She enjoys spending time with friends and family when not working, and enjoys rock climbing. She has 2 beautiful much loved Labradors, 2 domestic cats & a ragdoll that get up to mischief together.
Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2013 to take photos with your pets. From all of your donations for the Santa photos, we raised $1200 which was all donated to the Guide Dogs NSW!! We all love giggling and laughing to get your pets attention whilst on Santa’s knee for the photos. We had lots of fun and the Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Check out Bella, Pony and Callie for their Santa Photo
We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out . our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.
