New Park’nPay Accessibility Portal Goes Live

The NSW Government has already integrated 383 accessible parking spots across four Sydney councils. When completed, the program will cover roughly 3600 accessible parking spots across 30 Sydney Metro councils.

Mr Dominello said users would be able to select a spot with the recognisable wheelchair icon to indicate it is an accessibility bay with the spot being green if it is available to use or red if occupied.

“This is a great example of using technology to be more inclusive and this enhancement will make it easier than ever to plan a journey and find a parking spot,” Mr Dominello said.

“Instead of spending time and wasting petrol driving around looking for an accessible park, we have an innovative solution which gets drivers where they need to go.

“The Park’nPay app will also have an accessibility mode option where customers with a mobile parking permit can customise their experience to search for accessible parking, start a parking session and receive notifications.”

Vice President of Google Cloud – Australia and New Zealand Alister Dias said the NSW Government and Google share a vision for a strong and inclusive digital future for all Australians, and technology can play a pivotal role in helping deliver improved outcomes.

It is now easier for motorists with disabilities to find accessible parking across Sydney streets and carparks, thanks to a new nation-leading Park’nPay Accessibility Portal, giving drivers the power to search for hundreds of accessible spots with the tap of a button.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the Accessibility Portal is an easy-to-use webbased platform, allowing people to search for accessible parking at their desired location, and filter for the time and day the space is needed as well as by parking type.

“We are continuing our journey to improve the accessibility of services for the more than 400,000 people with mobility parking permits and want to offer them an easy way to find parking before they leave their driveways,” Mr Dominello said.

“It can often be time-consuming for drivers with a disability to find a suitable parking space especially if they are unfamiliar with the area they are travelling to.

“Motorists will be able to use the Accessibility Portal to find a spot which best suits their needs, the number of accessible spaces at a location, get directions and real-time availability for accessible spaces.”

"Working closely with the Department of Customer Service and Physical Disability Council, Google Cloud is optimising the Park'nPay experience by analysing parking sensor data to provide real time parking and travel information, ensuring motorists with disabilities can better plan trips and park with ease,” Mr Dias said.

Physical Disability Council NSW CEO Serena Ovens said: “The Accessibility Portal further enhances our member’s capacity to source accessible parking information easily including the ability to check the streetscape they will be parking in.”

“Any information that assists people with mobility needs to better understand their parking options is welcomed. PDCN applaud Google’s involvement in the Park’nPay app as an important innovation that supports the inclusion of the disability community.”

Real-time parking data will come online in the app as each council area is onboarded and will be completed in 2023.

The Portal is a joint initiative between the NSW Government, Google and the Physical Disability Council of NSW.

All Smiles for New River Frontage Cafe

Leonay residents, Shane and Belinda Simpson, open their newest cafe, Laughin’ Boy, this month.

With prime river frontage on the Great River Walk, and adjacent to the Yandhai Nepean Crossing, the historic Police Cottage site has been respectfully reinvigorated into the new Laughin’ Boy café and restaurant as part of Penrith City Council’s plans to revitalise the Regatta Park precinct.

“As local residents, the opportunity to restore the historic Police Cottage site and create a unique dining experience on the Nepean River was one we couldn’t pass up. The building and its surroundings have been completely refreshed and updated to meet the needs of the community, including accessibility bathrooms and ramps, more car parking.

“We hope to capture the welcoming community feel we’ve created at 2773 whilst honouring the local history and incredible river front location. We'd like to thank Penrith City Council and Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, for their vision and commitment to the project. We look forward to serving the Penrith community with the same heart that has built 2773”, said Shane Simpson.

Bush tucker items even make an appearance on the menu including Lemon Myrtle Tea, Bush Spice Dukkah, and Kakadu Plum Jam incorporating traditional bush tucker ingredients.

Zachariah's passion shines through as he speaks about his excitement for opening cafes in Penrith, saying “There’s a rich aboriginal cultural history in Penrith of the Dharug people. I’m

really excited to be opening cafes on this land and contributing back to the community wherever I can. I am especially excited to include traditional bush tucker elements into our menu, adding a unique twist to your common café favourites with items like Kakadu Plum Jam and Bush Spice Dukkah. The most popular menu items so far include Summer Fruit Pancake Stack, Crispy Chicken Bao Buns, Classic Fish and Chips, Aussie Beef Burger, and Strawberry Fields French Toast. Whilst these menu items may not sound healthy, they are made from wholefood ingredients and cooked with no industrial oils.

"At our cafes, we strive to create a welcoming atmosphere for all. Our menu offers a diverse range of options to cater to kids, adults, and all dietary needs, but above all, we prioritise taste and deliciousness in every dish. All served with a smile,” said Zachariah.

Women Walking Strong

With International Women’s Day taking place this month, Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk will be marking the occasion on their weekly community walk with an important event.

“We will be celebrating the achievements of us all as women on International Women's Day on Wednesday 8th of March. There will be guest speakers, light refreshments and drinks will be provided” said Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk.

The inspirational women’s group meet every Wednesday night (5:00pm from March to September and 6:00pm from October to February), outside the Coffee Club Nepean River for a free sponsored coffee, tea or hot chocolate that has been donated from supporting local organisations. They proceed to walk the Great River Walk at 6:00pm.

“Our hope is that this walk and talk creates a safe space for women to discuss their mental health, whilst bettering their physical health and creating meaningful social connections” Angela explained.

They are also planning significant events throughout the year, which include Easter, Mother’s Day, Women’s Health Week, Mental Health Week, R U OK Day, International Friendships Day, plus more to come.

Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk celebrated their 2nd Birthday in November 2022. Angela is proud of the group’s success in this time.

“We have enjoyed our women coming together in support of all thing’s health; socially, mentally, and physically to connect. We believe having a strong support system helps support people to overcome challenges and maintain a state of mental well-being. Many ladies have now created lifelong friendships.

“We have also really loved how much the community has come together in support of us, especially the Penrith Men's Walk and Talk and all the kind-hearted local sponsors in our local area. We are so excited for all of our upcoming events and all the new connections women in our community can make” she ended.

Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains have been operating in Blaxland for the past 32 years.

The organisation provides a unique service for disabled children and adults in the community, using horses as a therapy tool. Participants connect with the horse, while taking part in fun activities/riding skills that have great mental and physical benefits. Their Centre is the only RDA in the Blue Mountains, serving the local area, Western Sydney and across the mountains as far as Lithgow.

They have Riding Therapy Classes and Horse Skills Sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays during the school term. During school holiday periods, they have individual and group sessions of Stable Management and Horse Skills for children with disabilities.

“We are always in need of new volunteers and will train people who have no experience with horses or disabilities, but a keen interest in becoming involved at RDA. We also require volunteers who prefer to do fundraising, maintenance, and gardening at the Centre” explained Brenda of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.

Brenda enjoys being a part of the team at Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.

“Riding for the Disabled is a great organisation to become involved with. Volunteers gain new friends, experience caring for our special horses and see firsthand the difference and joy it brings to children and adults with disabilities” she said.

“RDA Blue Mountains receive no funding from Council or Government, but rely upon volunteer fundraising, donations, or sponsorship of our horses. If anyone would like to make a donation or local business sponsor one of our horses, please email us and we will forward information” Brenda replied.

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains is located at 72 St. John’s Road in Blaxland. They can be contacted on Facebook (Riding for the Disabled Blue Mountains), via email at rdabluemountains@gmail.com or by phone on 02 4739 6829. Lands of Beauty

These days, he calls the Blue Mountains home, settling near Little Hartley.

You could say that his earliest art memories came from within his family.

“My maternal Grandfather was a competent amateur painter. Though I hardly knew him, his work hanging at home and my mother’s encouragement allowed me to enjoy the scribbles or musings I made, without self-consciousness” Warwick reflected.

With several highlights over his career, Warwick’s experience of painting on three royal tours is an amazing achievement.

“I have accompanied His Royal Highness the (then) Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall (now King Charles III and Queen Consort of the United Kingdom) on three royal tours, in 2012, 2015 and 2018 around Australia. They were hectic, demanding, and exhilarating tours in which my outdoor painting stood me in good stead to create the 40 odd paintings during those travels” he explained.

He has published three books, illustrating his artworks. This includes Impressions and Interpretations, Chasing the Light and It’s the Light. Warwick is also the Patron of Nepean Arts Society.

Warwick’s next exhibition will be in the Blue Mountains later in the year.

“I hold a major exhibition each year at Lost Bear Gallery in Katoomba, during October/November. I also have a one-man exhibition at Panter and Hall in London every second year. The next will be in 2024” Warwick concluded.

To discover more about Warwick Fuller and his work, visit www.warwickfuller.com.

Acclaimed Outdoor Painter Warwick Fuller has been painting professionally in Australia for over 40 years. Winning numerous awards, holding many one-man exhibitions all over the world, and accompanying His Royal Highness the (then) Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall (now King Charles III and Queen Consort of the United Kingdom) on three royal tours, Fuller’s art journey can be traced back to his time living in the local community.

Warwick credits his early days living in Leonay as an inspiring time in his career.

“When we moved to Leonay in circa 1973, the wonderful sense of community helped us establish a lifelong circle of friends. The foot of the mountains was a great location for painting the local landscape and also conveniently reaching coastal or inland locations to camp and paint” said Warwick to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

“The mighty Nepean River and riverlands were a constant source of inspiration. I’ve nearly always painted outdoors and dedicated myself to it in the mid 1970’s” he continued.

Full Steam Ahead for 2023 Thirlmere Festival of Steam

It’s full steam ahead for the 2023 Thirlmere Festival of Steam, which will bring the village of Thirlmere to life on 18 and 19 March. The festival is once again being delivered by Wollondilly Shire Council and Transport Heritage NSW, operators of the NSW Rail Museum.

Visitors can look forward to steam train rides aboard the State’s rail heritage collection, demonstrations from local artisans, and the colourful annual street parade.

The iconic Huff n’ Puff race is making a long-awaited return to the festival this year, giving runners the opportunity to race against the beautifully refurbished 3001 engine.

In 2023, there will also be an expansion of the Saturday activities, an even bigger Family Carnival, local performers as well as the headline act Chris Sebastian, winner of The Voice 2020.

Wollondilly Mayor Matt Gould said, “We’re proud to be able to host the state’s premier steam event here in Wollondilly once again. I hope that everyone can get on board to take part in the fun.”

Transport Heritage NSW CEO Andrew Moritz said, “We’ll have at least six historic engines in steam throughout the weekend at the NSW Rail Museum, including Locomotive 3001; a 120-year-old steam locomotive that’s recently been restored by THNSW volunteers and staff.”

“In addition to steam train rides, visitors can enjoy cab visits, steam machinery, live steam models and more all weekend at the NSW Rail Museum.”

On Saturday 18 March, the NSW Rail Museum will be open with a variety of steam train rides, driver’s cab visits, a steam and vintage park, mini-train rides and more. The Family Carnival will take place at Thirlmere Sportsground, with carnival rides and activities from midday.

On Sunday 19 March, the whole village will come to life with market stalls, a street parade including the Campbelltown Camden District Marching Band, live performances, as well as steam rides and other activities at the NSW Rail Museum.

Harmony Week: Supporting Kids to Understand & Accept Diversity

Australia is home to one of the oldest continuous cultures, as well as Australians who identify with over 270 ancestries. Our cultural diversity is one of our strengths and an important source of national identity. However, racism remains a destructive force in Australian society. Research shows that social attitudes first take root in early childhood. Children learn prejudice from the grown-ups around them in the same way that they develop language.

Children learn the most by observing the behaviour of adults around them. Children listen carefully to how parents and caregivers speak about different groups in society and may adopt similar attitudes accordingly. Likewise, observing how parents and caregivers interact with different members of society teaches children how to behave around people who are different to them. Parents and caregivers who model kind words and actions set a valuable example for children to follow.

It is important to respond to children’s questions with matter of fact and age-appropriate explanations. Young children are naturally curious and often notice physical differences between people early on. For example, a child may notice that another child at her day care has a darker skin tone and asks you about this. An appropriate response might be, “some people have different skin colour and different eye colour and different hair colour.”

When discussing differences between people, point out and highlight the similarities as well. You can talk about how even though people look different, we all have similar feelings. Encourage children to seek out common interests or likes/ dislikes with children who might appear different to them. Sharing something in common, no matter how small, can bring different groups together.

Join in multicultural family events and experiences to learn more about the different cultural or religious groups in your community. Find out how your child’s school or early education centre is celebrating Harmony Week. For details on community events for the whole family, see harmony.gov.au.

As parents and caregivers, you can play an important role in helping children understand, respect, and appreciate cultural diversity.

Ready to Take the Court

The Year of the Emu

Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Football Club (JRLFC) are looking to lead the local competition once again in 2023, after a highly successful campaign last season. The club has wasted no time, with training already commencing for all age groups. Trial games will begin this month and round one kicking off on Saturday 15th April. Registrations are strong, and it looks like Emu Plains will be fielding around 48 teams this year, which is an increase from 2022.

Preparations are now underway for a successful year ahead on the courts for Emu Plains Netball Club.

The popular club, which celebrated it’s 50 year anniversary in 2019, will start the 2023 Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) season on Saturday 29th April, before concluding with Grand Finals played on Saturday 16th September.

Elizabeth De Marzi, President of Emu Plains Netball Club, is excited for the new season. This will see the club continue to grow once more, with registrations already open.

“We are hoping to have 25 teams this year. This includes starting with our gorgeous Under 7 Years and having teams in all age groups through to our Senior Ladies” she smiled.

Despite the last couple of seasons which have been anything but favourable thanks to COVID and the poor weather conditions, 2022 would prove to be a positive year for the red, white and blues, with 3 teams being crowned Premiers. This consisted of the Under 9/2 Teddies, Under 13/2 Peppers and Under 14/2 Rockets.

Teams have been filling fast, however, there are still some vacancies for the upcoming season.

“We are still looking for 13 to 14 year olds for the 14 Year age group as well as Senior Ladies B Grade players this year” Elizabeth stated.

She is proud of the club’s rich history and the positivity it brings to the local netball community.

“Emu Plains Netball Club has been competing every year for the last 53 years, with our aim to have fun, learn new skills and make new friends” she ended.

For more information about Emu Plains Netball Club, find them on Facebook.

“Last season, we had 25 out of 29 competitive teams making the Semi-Finals. We won the Penrith District Junior Rugby League Relay. Emu Plains JRLFC were also named Cup Champions of the Year at the Penrith District Junior Rugby League Presentation Dinner and this was probably the biggest highlight” stated Joanne Vella, Emu Plains JRLFC Registrar.

“This award is presented to the club who has the highest combined points of all their competitive teams in Division 1 and Division 2. This is a direct reflection of the effort the players have put in as well as the hard work on the coaching staff and club as a whole” she continued.

The rapid growth of NRLW has seen an increase in female player participation. Adding to this is the Penrith Panthers and Panthers Juniors launch of the Panthers Rugby League Women’s (PRLW) competition this season.

“Having a direct pathway to the Penrith Panthers PRLW, Emu Plains is committed to the growth and development of all our female players, catering for all skill levels and being one of the leading clubs paving the way for our girls to pursue their representative dreams” explained Joanne.

Despite registrations opening and filling, the club still has vacancies ahead of the start of the competition.

“We are still looking for players in all age groups, particularly in the ever expanding female competition, where we will be fielding our first Under 9’s and Under 11’s Girls’ teams” she said.

To find out more about Emu Plains JRLFC, visit their Facebook page, website (http://www.emuplainsjrlfc.com.au/) or call Club Registrar, Joanne Vella, on 0410 439348.

Purpose For Life

It’s great to know your purpose in life! A few years ago, a friend of mine was reading a biography of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The bit I loved was where they’d found a guy who knew Arnie as a teenager. This is what Arnie had told him he was setting out to do in life (do the voice in your head as you read it), “I want to be the greatest body builder in the world, and then I want to go to Hollywood, and make movies, and then I will go into politics”. Here is a guy who knew what he wanted to do – and went out and did it - for all of us to see.

As Easter is just around the corner, I can’t help but think of Jesus’ laser focus on his purpose. He told his disciples he was heading to Jerusalem to be taken into custody, condemned to death, killed, and three days later to rise again (Mark 10:33-34). And that’s exactly what they saw happen.

The thing is, the Bible tells us Jesus’ purpose has world altering effects for the rest of us. His purpose gives us purpose. Life is about knowing him, receiving him as the Lord over our lives, and responding to him with trust and obedience. The proof such a bold claim is true - he rose from the dead!

We’ve all met people with purpose, Arnie is a good example, but Jesus’ purpose changed the world, and changes our world so we can live out our meaning, and purpose, and life.

Can Simple Stretching Improve Your Cardiovascular Health?

Facilitated stretching is a part of almost every session of MET at our clinic. Stretching may reduce cardiovascular risk. In a 2017, study by Shinno etal. healthy women over 40yo were asked to stretch 3 times per week, for 3 or 6 months. They conducted 20-30 second static stretches of 15 muscle groups: trapezius, arm-flexors, deltoids, triceps, upper-back muscles (trapezius/ rhomboids), pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, gastrocnemius, soleus, hip abductors, hip adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, and lower erector spinae. Stretching intensity was participant-rated as “somewhat-heavy” to “heavy”.

To see whether the stretching routine had any long-term effects on blood vessels flexibility (compliance), researchers measured an index called RH-PAT both before and after 3 or 6 months of stretching. RH-PAT is determined by:

1. measuring normal arterial blood flow in the forearm, then

2. inflating an upper-arm cuff to stop blood flow for 5 minutes, then

3. releasing the cuff and measuring blood flow 1 min after cuff release.

4. Calculating the ratio of arm blood flow before cuffing and 1 min after cuff-release

5. This gives a ratio called the “reactive hyperaemia peripheral artery tonometry (RH-PAT) index”

RH-PAT is a “powerful predictor of all cause and cardiovascular

morbidity and mortality”. It can predict:

1. endothelial (blood vessel lining cell) dysfunction

2. coronary artery disease & atherosclerosis

3. microvascular dysfunction following sepsis

4. coronary plaque formation

The arteries of healthy people are flexible/dilatable and have a higher HR-PAT index; people with cardiovascular diseases have a low HR-PAT index because their arteries have difficulty dilating.

So, how did regular stretching effect participants artery’s ability to dilate (health)?

a. all study participants had an RH-PAT index below 1.67 at the start of the study

b. both 3 and 6 months of stretching improved RH-PAT index significantly

c. a further 6-months of no-stretching saw RH-PAT index return to pre-intervention values

These results suggest regular stretching can increase the compliance (flexibility) of arteries, reducing cardiovascular risk, and that regular stretching may lead to health benefits beyond increased muscle-flexibility. Importantly, once women stopped stretching, accrued cardiovascular benefits were slowly lost over the following 6 months. So, the old imperative idiom of ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies to the cardiovascular benefits of stretching too.

Celebrating Seniors’ Contributions Across Penrith

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Peachtree hotel

54 Peachtree rd, Penrith NSW 2750

Lunch at the Peachtree Hotel with Kylie, Katie and I was superb.

When we arrived, we were deciding on a few different options to try and settled on a share plate of cheeseburger spring rolls to begin with. The cheeseburger spring rolls were exceptional and full of flavour. The rolls were crisp, not drowned in oil and actually tasted like a cheeseburger. The rolls contained meat, some mustard, pickle, and cheese along with other ingredients.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith presented three seniors with Local Achievement Awards as part of the 2023 Seniors Festival.

Stuart Ayres said Cheryl, Rosalyn and Valda were carefully selected from a high calibre of nominees.

Recipients for the Penrith Local Achievement Awards are:

• Cheryl Devine for service to the community through the Emu Plains Lions Club, Emu Plains Netball Club and Emu Plains Little Athletics Club,

• Rosalyn Towers for service to the community through the Nepean Valley RSL Day Club,

• Valda Silvy for service to the community through work and advocacy for arts and culture.

“I congratulate the recipients who have made our region a diverse, active and inspirational place to live – thank you for your generous and remarkable contributions,” Stuart Ayres said.

The Local Achievement Awards are among an array of events taking place across the state as part of the 2023 NSW Seniors Festival, which enables older people to engage with each other, their community, and services.

The award winners highlight the diverse ways seniors support their families, communities, and society more broadly.

Minister for Seniors Mark Coure said the awards program and festival are key initiatives in the NSW Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting seniors.

“Seniors have and continue to make significant contributions to our society—we would not have the great state we do today without them,” Mr Coure said.

“I for one am incredibly appreciative of seniors and these awards are about recognising those contributions and thanking seniors for all they do.”

For more information about NSW Seniors Festival and the Local Achievement Awards, visit: seniorsfestival.nsw.gov.au.

The second choice we decided on for lunch was the Sea Breeze Plate. This share plate is made for two people, however, we wanted to share it among the three of us and I am glad we did. The Sea Breeze Plate consisted of dill and lemon battered blue eye whiting, grilled scallops, salt, and pepper squid, grilled crispy skinned barramundi, smoked salmon, garden salad, chips, dipping sauces and smoky BBQ sauces. This Sea Breeze Plate was amazing. The grilled scallops were presented in a shell which was round, and these scallops had a smooth texture. When you bit into the scallops, the flavour was immediately noticeable and wasn’t too strong. The sauce on the scallops had a slight lemon taste and the sauce gave extra flavour to the scallops. Without the sauce, the scallops would have been dry. I was impressed with the garden salad, along with the dressing and for something a little different I placed some smoked salmon on top of the salad. The salmon and salad together made your taste buds sing and this salad was one of the best salads I have tasted in a very long time. I really enjoyed the salt and pepper squid and the grilled barramundi.

The experience today was exceptional, and the staff looked after Kylie, Katie and I.

The Importance of Desexing your Cat

It has been calculated that, in just seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce as many as 420,000 kittens. This is a major problem and highlights the importance of desexing male and female cats at an early age to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community.

In addition to preventing unwanted litters, desexing may result in a positive behavioural change in your cat. Desexing may also minimise the chance of your cat developing reproductive organ-related health issues that can threaten your cat's life.

A desexed cat (male or female) are less likely to

• Wander or run away. Desexed cats generally have a reduced inclination to roam, which means they are less likely to roam off your property and reduces the risk of traffic accidents. It also increases the likelihood that your desexed cat will adapt better to a live indoors.

• Become involved in fights over territory or mating partners. This reduces the likelihood of injuries such as abscesses and infected wounds which may be fatal.

• Contract Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Also known as Feline AIDS, this can be contracted through fighting with other infected cats.

• Develop tumours such as uterine, ovarian and mammary (breast) cancer in females and possibly testicular cancer in

males.

• Display anti-social behaviour towards people or other animals. This makes pet ownership less enjoyable and disrupts the human-pet bond.

• Spray or mark its territory, which is usually in the house.

A cat can have an average of 4–6 kittens per litter. Each kitten must be fed, wormed, and treated for fleas. It is also a legal requirement that each kitten be vaccinated and microchipped before they are sold or given away. These costs can add up, making desexing a much easier and less expensive option.

The appropriate age for desexing can vary depending on the breed and size of your cat. Generally, it is best done before puberty (approximately six months of age) although the operation can be done at a later age. Local Council regulations require cats to be desexed by four months of age unless a letter of exemption is supplied by the treating veterinarian.

If you would like more information about desexing, microchipping or registration of your cat phone and chat with our friendly team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on 0247 362 027.

A Helping Hand for Our Pets

A Day of Nostalgia

The Friends of Penrith Regional Gallery, Home of the Lewers Bequest would like to announce, “The Art of the Cut: 1930s Evening Gowns”, which will take place on Sunday 26th March at 2:00pm at Penrith Regional Gallery.

The event will feature a presentation by The Cavalcade of History and Fashion of evening dresses and accessories worn in the 1930s and will be followed by afternoon tea served by Café at Lewers at 3:00pm.

A local group has been created to help our pets when they are in their time of need.

‘Missing/Found and Rehomed Pets Emu Plains NSW’ is a Facebook group that was created by resident Melanie Anderson on 26th of October, 2022. With 158 members and growing, it is a valuable resource for pet owners in the community.

“I started the group with the hope to help those members of our neighbourhood with their pets. Whether it’s helping to find a missing pet, report a pet that has been found or rehoming pets who have no where to go” explained Melanie to the Emu and Leonay Gazette.

Whilst operating for only a short period of time, there are plans for the group to share information including helpful tips or community notices in the future. Expanding the group to include other local areas such as Penrith are on the cards.

Melanie believes that groups like this are vital to help strengthen the community, particularly in times when they need it the most.

“I personally think it’s important to have local groups like this in the local community. They aid in helping each other to look out for the safety of our pets. Our pets are no less important than a family member in need.

“If we can help others reunite with their pets, then it’s a great thing. Finding a home for a pet too is rewarding for all. Pets have feelings just like humans and they too have a need to be cared for and looked after” she ended.

To find the group, search ‘Missing/Found and Rehomed Pets Emu Plains NSW’ on Facebook.

“The audience will view original gowns and accessories of the 1930s, while listening to the stories of these items in the context of the social history of the times” explained Lynda Henderson of Friends of Penrith Regional Gallery, Home of the Lewers Bequest.

There will also be an opportunity for attendees dressed in 1930s attire to take photos with a 1930s car parked in the Gallery grounds (1930s dress is optional).

“We are hoping for a most enjoyable afternoon of revisiting the 1930s and raising money for conservation of artworks in the Gallery Collection” Lynda replied.

“We are looking forward to the community’s delight at seeing this event” she added.

The Cavalcade of History and Fashion is an organisation with a collection of original historic gowns and accessories with provenance, dating from the 1700s preserving Australia’s social and fashion history.

The cost to attend The Art of the Cut: 1930s Evening Gowns is $35 per person. This can be paid by cash or with credit card by phoning 4735 1100, from 10:00am to 3:30pm, or online at www.penrithregionalgallery.com.au. Bookings are essential and must be made by Monday 20th March.

Visit the Gallery website or Facebook page for more information.
