Nominations Open in Penrith for NSW Heritage Blue Plaque Program Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that nominations for the NSW Blue Plaques Program are open, and members of the public are invited to nominate local places and personalities that deserve to have their heritage value recognised. The NSW Blue Plaques Program, modelled on a similar initiative in the United Kingdom, will showcase key heritage sites. “I am asking everyone to think of the places in our community that have an important story attached to them and submit those suggestions to my office to be nominated for a Blue Plaque” Stuart Ayres said. “The place could be a much-loved historic building, a place linked to a moment in history, or even somewhere linked to a local hero. By suggesting these sites, we can make sure the places which matter most to the community of Penrith can be considered for recognition with a Blue Plaque”. Minister responsible for Heritage Don Harwin said whether its places, buildings or people that have had an important impact, across NSW there are hidden gems with stories that deserve to be told. “Behind every plaque is a story. We want everyone to be involved in making suggestions to their local MP or MLC so we can recognise the people and places in our history, including those that matter most to local communities” Mr Harwin said. For more information on the project and to access the nomination form, please visit https://bit.ly/ HNSWBluePlaques. Suggestions for nominations can be sent to Stuart Ayres MP by emailing penrith@parliament.nsw.gov.au.

Raise Waste-Related requests at The Waste Spot
Penrith City Council is inviting residents to jump online and head to The Waste Spot, the digital platform dedicated to supporting residents to raise waste requests and provide feedback to Council as quickly and easily as possible. The Waste Spot is a digital alternative to Council’s existing telephone customer support service and aims to give residents another opportunity to contact Council, while helping to ensure fast responses and efficient resolutions are achieved. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM praised the online destination as a ‘round the clock option residents can use to let Council know of their needs at a time convenient to them. “Innovative services like this are nothing short of what Penrith deserves and this is just the first step," Cr McKeown said. “This digital service will work alongside existing contact methods and will help make life easier for those who prefer to access services online. “Sustainability is one of Penrith City Council’s biggest priorities when it comes to providing our community with a high-quality and easy to use waste management service. “Over the years, we have pioneered best practice in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) initiatives which have contributed to Penrith leading the way when it comes to sustainable waste management. “Council takes great pride in providing a service that is easy to access and provides the solutions to our community’s queries or problems,” she said. It’s easier than ever to arrange a bulky waste collection, take care of a rubbish spill, ask a waste-related question or provide feedback at a time that’s convenient for you. Help our Locals Shine Tracey Winderbanks and Therese Gorman are preparing for the adventure of a lifetime and it’s all for a great cause. The local residents will be participating in the S***box Rally next year, whilst raising valuable funds for the Cancer Council. The ladies are a part of Dusty Diamonds, and they will be driving a 1991 Mazda Astina. The Rally will take place in March 2022, covering a distance of 3,232kms. “We will be departing Hay in NSW on 26th March 2022 and arriving in Adelaide on 1st April. Our route will start in Hay, then continue for a night’s stay at Silverton, Cameron Corner, Arkaroola, William Creek, Kingoonay, Kimba and finish in Adelaide. The challenge is that the route is mainly dirt” said Tracey, one half of Dusty Diamonds. Their amazing efforts have already raised $7,360, with a goal to raise $10,000. The funds will go towards the fight against Cancer. “Everyone has someone affected in their lives from Cancer, be it family and/or friend. Any money we can raise towards Cancer research is a great achievement. The Rally has raised over $24 million in 10 years. Let's keep this figure rising - a cure for Cancer would be amazing” she announced. With lockdown now over, Tracey and Therese are looking forward to returning to the Rally. “This is the second Rally we are embarking on. We knew we were going to have an adventure on the first one but didn't realise what great friends we would make and the memories it created. The overall feeling on the Rally is great! The fun, laughs, tiredness (from all the driving) and support from everyone in the Rally family is hard to explain” Tracey reflected. Our River, Our Walk Each day, hundreds of locals descend upon the Great River Walk as part of their exercise routines. It’s a walk that is enjoyed by all that brings us together. One local resident has started a group to share the beauty of this iconic destination. Phillip Goddard started ‘Nepean River Walkers, The Great River Walk’ on Facebook at the end of August this year. In just a short amount of time, the group has been embraced with over 1,000 members joining. “Lockdown was on, and I thought to myself, what’s happening on the walk? I couldn’t find any information about it, especially with the open track conditions after the rain. There was a lack of information, so I decided to start a Facebook group. As a local, I love the Nepean River area and the Lower Blue Mountains, so I was more than happy to promote it” explained Phillip. “I enjoy the river scenery, park areas along the walk and the local history. And, of course, the food and the cafes” he continued. Whilst many of us taking the Great River Walk begin at Regentville and follow across the Yandhai Nepean Crossing into Emu Plains, Phillip said that there is more to explore on the walk. “There are heaps of hidden gems all along the river. Most people that visit walk the bridge-to-bridge track. Some that I enjoy, that are easily excusable, include the lower track on the Emu Plains side (towards Leonay) and the close by walks like Knapsack Bridge” Phillip said. Phillip encourages the local community to get behind the group and welcomes everyone. “Members can post photos of the scenery, track conditions or anything they think that might be interesting involving the Great River Walk. Promoting the area can only lead to more investment. Penrith City Council is already working on upgrading Regatta Park and Tench Reserve. “Furthermore, I have been contacted by a member of the group about wheelchair access on the M4. I’m hoping to link a feedback email address to Council that may assist in improvements” he ended. To become a member of the group, search ‘Nepean River Walkers, The Great River Walk’ on Facebook. r The Great River Walk | Image Supplied

1 Henry Cox Drive Mulgoa NSW 2745 Whilst many of us found ourselves in lockdown with a lot of spare time and not much else to do, Emu Plains Author, Bruce Turner, saw it as the perfect opportunity to write a book. Mr Turner’s latest book, ‘Rising from the Mailroom to the Boardroom’ was released recently in August. Published by CRC Press (Taylor and Francis Group), the book showcases ‘101 building blocks’ that help people develop the skills they need for a successful career. “The book is partly biographical, combining personal stories and career insights across 15 chapters. For visual learners, the narrative is complemented by 135 diagrams and illustrations, and 45 photos” he explained to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. “The aim is to inspire emerging leaders to be everything they can be, by equipping them with the skills they need to succeed now and into the future” Mr Turner continued. This year also marks an important milestone for Bruce. He celebrated fifty years since his first job as a junior banker with the Rural Bank in Penrith. He now holds significant board and oversight roles including the Board of Wentworth Healthcare Limited that runs the primary health network for the Nepean Blue Mountains. “The lockdowns have been extremely challenging, especially the tough restrictions on personal contact with people, most notably our children, grandchildren, extended family, business colleagues, and friends. Routine meetings have transitioned to video conferencing and working from home. “The one upside is that the change in work practices has provided the space to research and write this and other books by reducing the time spent on commuting, minimising distractions, boosting energy levels, and enhancing periods of concentration” stated Mr Turner. He is currently researching a family and local history book, with the working title: Footprints on the Banks of the Nepean – 64 Connected People who Helped Shape the Nepean Valley Community. It is hoped it will be published in 2022. Rising from the Mailroom to the Boardroom is available for purchase as either hardcopy or an e-book from various online bookstores. It currently retails for about $120. r Bruce visiting his former school in Penrith for its sesquicentenary. Image: Bruce Turner

Keeping Children Safe Online: What are they doing? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we conclude our three-part series on keeping children safe online. According to eSafety research, approximately 15% of children and 24% of teens admitted to behaving in a negative way with a peer online. When we consider children’s developing capacity to manage big emotions and impulses, as well as their growing interpersonal skills, this makes sense. Children need your guidance to develop respectful social behaviour both online and offline. Online communication can be difficult to navigate due to the often-faceless nature of it. It’s important to speak to your children about how this disconnection can make it feel like online actions and words are not as hurtful. However, we know that the adverse consequences on the mental health of someone being bullied online is not just equivalent to being bullied in person, but in some cases can be worse. We must encourage children to behave online just as they would in the real world. Drawing up a Family Technology Agreement is a great way to talk about the values that you share as a family. These agreements outline your expectations around the use of internet-enabled devices. Agreements can cover the amount of time spent online, the way your child is expected to behave online, and what your child will do if they feel worried or upset about something they see online. Navigating the online world successfully requires a certain level of maturity, discernment, knowledge, and skill; it is not simply about reaching a certain age. Therefore parents must play a proactive role in supporting their children’s online behaviour from the first turn using the iPad to their first personal mobile phone, and beyond. For more information and resources on this topic, please visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety. gov.au/parents.
Regatta Park Update
The exciting transformation of Regatta Park along the riverbank, from River Road to the river foreshore, is well underway. Preparation work on the western section of Regatta Park will start shortly and will run through until the end of the year. This work includes some tree removal and levelling of groundwork to prepare for the River Road deviation and new road corridor. A number of utilities, including water and gas, are also being relocated. Council will be working closely with the contractor to minimise disruption for surrounding residents and visitors to the Nepean River. The car park on the western side of River Road at Regatta Park and the amenity block remains open for visitors to use. The Great River Walk also remains open! Panther Proud
With the Penrith Panthers now crowned the 2021 NRL Premiers, fans from across the community have been proudly showing their support by decorating their homes in Panthers colours. None prouder than the Christie family in Emu Plains. Amy and Ben Christie and their children Charlie and Matilda recently decorated their home, as a homage to the Penrith Panthers recently making the NRL Finals. All this complete with a giant Panther, nicknamed Pete, who adorns their front yard. “It started with some flags and giant heads from Enzo at Montana Signs. Then, I think being stuck at home due to lockdown, I kept adding to it every day” explained Amy to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. “We ended up with balloons, coloured fence, signs, flags and a giant Panther with a bunny hanging out his mouth, which belongs to my Dad. It had to be transported on his tow truck as it weighs over 1.5 tonne!” she continued. Amy has been a proud Panthers supporter all her life. “I've grown up living in a Panthers household. My Dad is a massive Panthers supporter and now our Son and Daughter both love their Panthers. Being born in the Lower Mountains, Penrith were our team, that's just how it goes. We've supported them our whole lives and will continue to pass the love onto our children” Amy smiled. The community support for the Christie’s display has been amazing and well received. “We were meeting new people in the neighbourhood, getting gifts and even decorations to add to the house. It was so lovely to see. To be honest, that was why I kept adding. So many people have struggled with this lockdown. If we could bring a smile to someone's face, all the balloons and effort were worth it” she said. “Watching the Panthers win the premiership was surreal. My Husband and I can still remember where we were in 2003. To experience it with our kids was just amazing. “We look forward to next season, where we can get to more games in person and, of course, continue our support with our children for the boys” Amy ended. r Feature Article [Cover] The Christie Family [Above] The Christie Family Panthers display | Images: Amy Christie

The Truth Will Set You Free We now know what it’s like not to be free. Lockdown has given us at least a taste of that. Working from home, staying at home, not going out, and not seeing people has been a hard ask. It’s been worth it to care for each other, but it’s been difficult. And that’s why coming out of restrictions, whether on October 11 or November 1 has been called “Freedom Day”. Freedom is something to think about though isn’t it. What takes our freedom, and what gives it back? We often think of freedom as being able to do whatever we want, but is that true freedom? What if true freedom is doing what we were made to do? The train that looks beyond the tracks is kidding itself if it thinks, “I’d be free if I could just get off these tracks”. The goldfish in the bowl is kidding itself if it thinks “I’d be free if I could just get out of this water”. And the Bible tells us that living life apart from God is the same. We were made to live with God, in relationship and the love of God, but in our collective quest for the freedom to do whatever we want, we’re actually enslaved. But Jesus tells us he came to set us free and give us the relationship with God we were meant to have and live the life we were made for. Is that a freedom you share? Jesus said “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:31-32). Now that’s not a demand to impress him, but to trust him. As we share the freedom of coming out of lockdown, let me invite you to share in Jesus’ ultimate freedom. HEALTH MATTERS

Migraine Auras – What Their Strange Features Tell Us About Migraines?
38% of migraine sufferers experience auras. Not all migraines involve auras, only 20% do. When present, auras last about 30 minutes; a migraine usually follows within 10 minutes. 20% of auras don’t become a migraine. Over 50 aura-symptoms have been described. Visual auras are by far the most frequent, although weakness, dizziness, numbness/tingling, and speech difficulties, are common. Studies show migraines result from damage to local brain cells. This causes altered function of the brain-region involved. If damage is severe enough, we perceive it consciously and aura results. The damaged brain cells also release a host of biochemicals, and if damage is sufficient biochemicals, are released to turn on local pain sensors (nociceptors) which results in us experiencing the pain we know as the migraine headache. So how are brain cells damaged? The brain is the most energy hungry organ in the body. It requires 10 times more oxygen than the rest of the body (Clarke & Sokoloff 1999). The brain is exquisitely sensitive to anything that hampers energy production including lack of oxygen and when brain cells can’t make enough energy, they are easily damaged. In the damaged, some neurons stop working (i.e., stop producing their normal electrical signals). In migraine, the area within which damage happens spreads like a wave across the cortical surface of the brain, involving ever more brain cells. This phenomenon is called a cortical spreading depression (CSD) The type of aura we get depends upon the region in which damage occurs. The area of the brain which controls vision is at the back of the head. It is known as Brodmann’s area 17. The visual cortex has the highest neuronal density of any brain region and the lowest relative density of supporting cells called astrocytes that protect brain cells from CSD. It is the brain region most sensitive to energy deprivation and thus migraine-auras are mostly visual because in most people the brain-cell-damage that initiates a CSD occurs in the vulnerable visual cortex. The simple reason migraine-auras are varied is that symptoms depend upon the brain region in which damage and CSD starts-and on where the damage wave travels to. r Image: www.pexels.com

November is now upon us, and Spring is well and truly in the air! ‘Freedom Day’ has already arrived and catching up with our loved ones is now a reality. Business is slowly returning to normal, with doors now open. It’s the perfect time to get out and support local business. Let’s all welcome them back after a tough few months. Thank you again to our longstanding and loyal advertisers and readers; and to those who have joined us this year. By supporting our advertising businesses, you’re supporting us too! On Thursday 11 November we remember our fallen heroes, and those that have died in the line of duty. We truly wouldn’t have experienced the ‘Freedom’ that we now know, without their courage and sacrifices. Grab yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy your community news. It’s your last chance before the Christmas rush. Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter.
