Stay Safe This Snake Season

With Spring now upon us, it is also snake season. Snakes are more visible in the warmer weather and can be seen when we’re out and about. Sean Cade of Australian Snake Catchers has shared some tips on how to stay safe during this period. Sean began his professional reptile removal service business 15 years ago and together with his partner Freya, have successfully removed many venomous and non-venomous snakes. “Typically, the snake season is Spring and Summer (September to March) each year. However, on warm days they will emerge throughout the year. Snakes don’t hibernate. They experience brumation, which means that they have sporadic bursts of activity” explained Sean. If you encounter a snake, Sean has this important information for us. “Snakes are purely defensive creatures by nature. If they are given an opportunity to escape a situation or retreat, they will prefer this option. Snakes will feel threatened by humans that get too close as we are seen as large predators in their view. “If you encounter a snake, do not approach them. Keep kids and pets away. Back away slowly whilst keeping your eyes on the snake. Most importantly, do not attempt to catch or kill them. 80 to 90% of people are bitten trying to catch or kill a snake” he said. There are also steps to take to ensure your home is safe and

minimized of encounters. “Snakes enter premises for food and shelter. Keep rubbish and debris to a minimum and your yard and grass tidy. Don’t put pet water bowls near doorways. Firewood piles should be kept away from the house and on a pallet, if possible. If the snake is in or around your home, call a licensed professional” Sean stated. There are several species of venomous and non-venomous snakes that can be found in Western Sydney. Venomous includes the Eastern Brown Snake, Death Adder, Red Bellied Black Snake, Yellow Faced Whip Snake, Marsh Snake and Golden Crowned Snake. In cooler climates, you’ll find the Eastern Tiger Snake and Highlands Copperhead. Non-venomous include the Common Tree Snake and Diamond Python. For more information about Australian Snake Catchers, visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ australiansnakecatchers/. Ricky and Josh’s Hair-Raising Challenge Emu Plains’ Ricky Kent has been joined by good mate Josh Wiles to grow a mullet and it’s all for a good cause! The locals recently took part in ‘Mullets for Mental Health’ month, a charity fundraiser organised by the Black Dog Institute. Mullets for Mental Health took place in the month of September. Participants were asked to sport their best mullets, all whilst raising valuable funds to support mental health research. Black Dog Institute is a medical research institute in Australia that investigates mental health across the lifespan. “The impact of mental health hits very close to home for both of us. Anything that brings awareness to the cause is worthwhile, especially during these times of separation and stress through COVID” explained Ricky and Josh to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. This is the first time that they have both taken part in the event, after previously being donors to other people’s fundraisers. Ricky and Josh are fast approaching their goal of raising $4,000. They welcome any donations from the local community to help support their cause. “We believe the fundraising will be closed by the time this is published. However, if it isn’t, you can donate at teamblackdog. org.au/fundraisers/Amonthtomulletover. If it’s closed, the Black Dog Institute run various fundraisers throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled” they said. For now, they are concentrating on this ‘hair raising’ event but have not ruled out any others in the future. They hope to break the stigma that is attached to mental health. “Reach out to your mates. A conversation can save a life. 1 in 5 people are affected by mental health issues. You're not on your own” they ended. v 1 [Top] Ricky (left) and Josh (right) with their mullets [Left] Ricky (left) and Advertisement 65mm x 190mm Jun'20.qxp_Layout 1 17/6/20 3:23 pm Page Josh (right) | Images: Ricky Kent

Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours Woolworths has gone digital with its popular Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours, with a new look to the education program set to provide more opportunities for Emu Plains, Emu Heights and Leonay students to learn where their fresh food comes from. Years 5 and 6 primary school students can now be the first to experience the digital program. Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tour was the first national program of its kind when it began in 2018, and to date more than 260,000 Australian school and early learning centre students have participated in the in-store experience. Designed in collaboration with educators, food scientists and nutritionists, the program also allows students the ability to virtually step onto an Australian farm to learn how fresh food is grown and meet some of the farmers who supply fruit and vegetable to their Woolworths stores. The redesign comes as new Woolworths’ research shows that less than half of the children in NSW and ACT surveyed aged 6-14 could correctly identify a leek, apricot, or a beetroot. It also highlighted a lack of understanding on where fresh food originates with many kids having never visited a crop farm. Woolworths Emu Plains Store Manager, David Crellin said: “As Today’s Fresh Food People, we’re committed to helping local families make healthier and easier decisions when it comes to their lifestyles. “A big way we can do that is by educating younger Aussies about where food comes from, the food production process, Aussie suppliers and growers, and the need to support a sustainable future. Our new Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tour achieves all this using technology to create a fun learning experience. “Taking the Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours online also enables teachers to bring the curriculum virtually to life, even if students are learning from home. Students can discover the importance of how their fresh food makes it into local stores and helps them build a healthier relationship with fruits and vegetables”. Like the in-store Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours ‘book a tour’ program, schools interested in participating in the new digital program can request a free classroom kit that contains all the materials and lesson plans required, along with access to a supporting Fresh Food Kids Discovery Tours app. The roll out of the new digital program will start with Years 5 and 6 and be available to Kindergarten to Year 4 from early 2022. To find out more about Woolworths Fresh Food Kids Digital Discovery Tour program and how to request a classroom kit, visit www.woolworths.com.au/discoverytours. r The program is available to Years 5 and 6 students now | Image/Article: Woolworths

Keeping Children Safe Online: Who Are They Talking to? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we continue our three-part series on keeping children safe online. On the 3rd of September, ten additional police officers joined the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad to address a rise in online sex crimes against children. In a statement released by the NSW Police, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty attributed this concerning trend to children spending additional time at home online unsupervised. “The best tool to ensure your child’s safety is you. Make sure they know they can tell you about anything that makes them uncomfortable and that any app, game or social media platform where they speak to other people can put them at risk,” Det Supt Doherty said. Many seemingly innocuous apps and games include chat functions which allow anyone in the world to contact your child. Before installing any app or game, do your research and ensure you maximise privacy settings. The Carly Ryan Foundation provides detailed, up-to-date information for parents on specific apps and games. These guides include step-by-step instructions on how to operate configure privacy settings on the apps. These free fact sheets can be downloaded from carlyryanfoundation.com. In addition to maximising privacy settings on apps, you need to supervise children when they access the internet. It is best to always supervise small children (under 5 years old) physically when they use internet-enabled devices. Primary aged school children should be encouraged to ask you to access devices, and you need to know where they are and what they are doing when they log on onto the web. I highly discourage allowing primary aged school children to access the internet in their bedroom with the door closed. As children grow older, regular conversations about online safety continue to be essential. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Good Neighbour Program Penrith City Council is again providing an opportunity for residents to stay connected in a safe way through its Good Neighbour Program. The Program encourages residents to check on their neighbours with readymade cards, which can assist in identifying what community members may require while they stay at home during the current Public Health Orders due to COVID-19. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said that looking out for one another would keep our community spirit high and help those who have really felt the impact of the ongoing pandemic. “At Council, we understand the ongoing restrictions can be a challenge and maintaining the wellbeing of our residents during this time is of utmost importance,” Cr McKeown said. “These small cards can make a big difference as they allow the community to maintain safe social distancing while connecting with neighbours and offering a helping hand. “Whether you’re heading out to grab some essentials or taking your daily walk, I encourage residents to pop one of these cards in a neighbour’s letterbox – you never know who might need the random show of support”. The isolation cards are available to download at penrith. city/goodneighbour. r An important initiative | Image/Article: Penrith City Council

Mapping the Nepean River’s Revitalisation

Penrith City Council has developed a new online interactive map to showcase the ongoing revitalisation of the Nepean River, and help residents and visitors discover all the things to see and do there.   Details about major projects being delivered on both sides of the Nepean River are now easier than ever to find with the map outlining their location, status and where to find more information about the projects so residents can keep up to date.    The map is designed to help visitors plan a trip to the Nepean River by providing details and locations of public and accessible toilets, car parks and on-street parking spaces, along with picnic spots, playgrounds and where to grab the best view or photo. The interactive map also allows users to discover things to see and do at the Nepean River including walking tracks, where to launch a kayak from, appropriate fishing spots and popular locations to book for wedding ceremonies. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said the new interactive map will be a valuable resource for residents and visitors. “The Nepean River is a hive of construction activity at the moment and this map will help residents and visitors to understand what’s planned for the Nepean River as well as all the different ways they can experience and enjoy our region’s greatest natural asset” Cr McKeown said. Penrith City Council’s ongoing program of work to enhance the Nepean River and create more opportunities for people to meet, relax, explore, play and be active in the outdoors is set to strengthen Penrith’s position as Western Sydney’s most liveable city.   View and use the interactive map at: penrith.city/nepeanriver r Artist’s impression of water play at Regatta Park | Image/Article: Penrith City Council

Freedom From Fear

Fear can be a helpful emotion, but it can also be crippling. I’m very glad I feel fear near the cars on the M4, or on the edge of a cliff, or when I’m in some other danger. It’s there as a response designed to keep me safe, and careful near danger. The danger with fear though is when it grows out of proportion to the dangers it warns us against. Let me ask then, how are you going with fear now, during these COVID times? I ask not because there’s nothing to fear. There are very real and significant risks in catching this disease. However, how do we keep these fears from getting out of proportion and distorting how we think and care for others? What we need is wisdom - wisdom to weigh the relative dangers - wisdom to treat other people with kindness - wisdom to work out how to do life together as a community when we have different circumstances, and different experiences, and different values. Following Jesus doesn’t mean we won’t feel the emotion of fear, or dangers in this life, but it certainly can shape how we respond to them wisely. And the sure hope we’re offered by Jesus is this – difficulty, and sickness, even death itself don’t have the final say over how we live our lives. Our creator and loving God does, and by his resurrection Jesus has shown that he is more powerful than any of them, and rules life itself. That’s incredible, and ultimately, offers us freedom from fear. HEALTH MATTERS

Can Good Diet Benefit Migraine and Regular Headache? Migraines are often triggered by something. In a study by Kelman (2007) patients listed 15 frequent migraine triggers. Clearly, the majority of these are diet/lifestyle related factors, which means we can do something about them. 7 of 15 factors can be directly or indirectly influenced by diet. Food, not eating and alcohol intake are dietary choices. Sleep disturbances (think zinc insufficiency), neck-pain, stress-perception, and hormonal factors can be influenced to varying degrees by diet. Four factors: smoking, exercise, sexual activity, and sleeping late, are clearly lifestyle choices. Only 4 factors, weather, perfumes/odours, lights, and heat are environmental, yet these too could be controlled/avoided. To illustrate the powerful effect of diet on migraine and headache symptoms, let’s review the case of a 39-year-old woman who attended the clinic suffering 2.5 days of migraine-headaches, plus 4.5 days of non-migraine headaches weekly. She was struggling to work and regularly taking Maxalt (rizatriptan), Nurofen, Valium, and aspirin, along with MigraineCare (a nutritional supplement) to deal with symptoms. The patient consumed alcohol regularly, had considerable gastrointestinal issues, and extremely painful and tight muscles, yet was fit and exercised vigorously daily. Note: although exercise can reduce migraine frequency, intensity, and duration, in a cruel twist, exercise can promote non-migraine headaches, and increase symptoms of muscle-pain and tightness, especially if diet is inadequate. The patient wanted to undertake only dietary change and didn’t want any deeper remedial therapy (although this would have been beneficial) as she was particularly sensitive to any type of pain. Thus, this case is an excellent example of the large influence simple diet/lifestyle changes ‘by themselves’ can have on headache and migraine symptoms. We analysed the patient’s current dietary pattern via diet diary, identified shortcomings, then prescribed a healthful eating pattern, plus key dietary supplements. The patient agreed to abstain from alcohol, and moderated exercise to reasonable levels. At a follow up appointment after 5 months on the new dietary protocol, the patient indicated that she had suffered no migraines and just one regular headache and required no medications at any time in the previous month. Her muscle pain and tightness had improved significantly as had gastrointestinal symptoms. r

Local Lion Receives International Award

Local resident Jim Devine has been awarded the Lions Club International Leadership Medal for his work with the Lions Club of Emu Plains. He received the prestigious award on 28th August at the Virtual District Changeover Meeting. The District is made up of the metropolitan area and comprises of over 70 clubs. “The award is the 3rd highest award that is Internationally presented to an individual. This was for not only my Lions Club work, but also for recognition for bringing awareness to Parkinson's and Donatelife” explained Jim to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Jim’s award comes from a nomination put forward by the Lions Club District Governor, which is then ratified by Lions International in the US. “This award means a great deal to me as someone with Parkinson’s. I can bring awareness to the community and likewise with Donatelife, as my granddaughter became a liver transplant recipient at the age of 4 months. Coincidentally, she just celebrated her 14th birthday the same day I received this award” he reflected. “It is recognition of the individual and the Lions Club of only 14 members, that it's possible to achieve prestigious awards despite our limitations” continued Jim. Mr Devine has been a member of the Lions Club of Emu Plains for 7 years. His current role with the club is Publicity Officer. He has previously received the Melvyn Jones Medal for Excellence within his club, Ted Tricker Memorial Trophy for Best District Newsletter for 3 years in a row and the Anthony Cheung Trophy for Best District Media Release. “The International Leadership Medal is not only recognised Internationally, but also a first for our club” he said. Jim took voluntary redundancy from employment due to his Parkinson’s. Current Lions Club of Emu Plains President Alan Cooper, whom he knew previously from a Little Athletics Committee, asked him to join soon after. “Being a Lion allowed me to give back to the local community and charities, plus apply my skills and learn new skills” he ended.

Gymnastics Coach charged over alleged Sexual Abuse of Teenage Girls

Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad detectives have charged a gymnastics coach, who is barred from working with children, as part of an investigation into the alleged sexual abuse of young gymnasts. In July, detectives from the State Crime Command’s Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad commenced an investigation following reports a girl had been sexually abused by her coach during gymnastics training. Initial inquiries revealed the man had been refused a Working With Children Check in 2016, with his current status being barred. During the course of the investigation, a further four girls reported being sexually abused by the coach during their training sessions.

Following extensive inquiries, detectives arrested a 54-year-old man at a home at Leonay about 11am (Monday 6 September 2021). The man was taken to Penrith Police Station, where he was charged with engage in child-related work without clearance/application, eight counts of intentionally sexually touch child aged 10-16 years, intentionally sexually touch child under 10 years, sexually touch person 16-17 years under special care, and sexually touch person 17-18 years under special care. Police will allege in court the man sexually touched five girls – aged between 9 and 17 – on numerous occasions between January 2020 and June 2021, while they were students under his care. He refused bail to appear at Penrith Local Court (Tuesday 7 September 2021). Investigations are continuing. The Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad is comprised of detectives who are specially trained to investigate matters against children and adults, including sexual assault, serious physical abuse, and extreme cases of neglect. Anyone with concerns about suspected child abuse or exploitation should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw. crimestoppers.com.au. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. People should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages. r

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

Thank You to Our Wonderful Clients Camille and the staff at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful clients for their understanding and support during the COVID-19 lockdowns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been performing contactless consultations – this means that a nurse meets you in the carpark and collects your pet, then takes them inside to be seen by the veterinarian, while you wait in the carpark. This is done to accommodate for social distancing and to ensure that we remain safe and operating during the pandemic. We understand that it is not ideal to hand over your beloved pet, whether they are unwell or just for a routine checkup, but we are so grateful that you trust us to look after them and provide the care that they require. We want you to know that your pets are being loved and comforted by all members of staff during their visits. We feel so lucky to be able to see and cuddle so many cats, dogs, and rabbits! You may have experienced some extended wait times during the pandemic, but we would love to share with you what is happening behind closed doors! We have done so many things, including delivering a litter of Boxer puppies in an emergency caesarean, triaging sick patients, vaccinating, and microchipping litters of kittens and puppies, various orthopaedic surgeries, helping a cheeky Australian Shepherd vomit up a couple of socks, the list goes on! We are so thankful that we have been able to remain open and available to look after your pets during these unprecedented times. We can’t wait for this all to be over and to be able to see all of your faces again! Until then, we will continue to look after your pets all while being as safe as possible.

October brings with it sun filled days, picnics and 'friend bubbles'. As vaccination rates climb, so do the hopes of many in anticipation of the much talked about 'Freedom Day'. After 3 long months of lockdown it seems that we are on the cusp of some sort of 'normality'. While life will never truly return to what was, this process and time has helped prepare us all for living 'with' Covid. Some have witnessed heartbreak and loss during these tough times while others have had to learn to pivot and adapt to changing times; all of us together have had to adopt new ways. We thank our loyal advertisers and readers for continuing to support us through these challenging times of late. It's your support that has kept us in over 27,000 letterboxes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers! By supporting our advertisers, you support us! And for this, we THANK you. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News. Accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what will be.
