Library Overdue Fines, the Final Chapter
Light Shining in the Darkness Have you ever wondered if this is all there is? What with the meaning we give our lives, and the pain we feel in grief, and the loss we feel in death. There must be more to it than live, suffer, die. Jesus certainly said there was, and he had a flare for making his point. We’re told about one of the feasts he went to in Jerusalem, where four giant lamps were lit at night. Against that backdrop Jesus said ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life’ (John 8:12). It’s an attention-grabbing picture isn’t it? We know how important light is. We can’t see without it, we’re not safe, we can’t live. And do you find it resonates with your own experience, where you sense there’s more to life than just what can be seen? There’s lots could be said about the background and what he said, but here’s the main game. He’s offering a relationship with God to us. He’s highlighting that without him we don’t have one and are walking in darkness. And lastly, he’s promising life that doesn’t end at death, but will continue with God into all eternity. And it comes with an invitation - to follow him. Now I wouldn’t expect you to be persuaded by these words alone, but when you look into who he was, and what he did, there’s more than enough to persuade us he was not only the real deal, not only understood there was more to life than what we see, but that he himself was the very focus and meaning of life. What an opportunity – to have the darkness lit by a relationship with him. r

Blue Mountains Library has closed the book on overdue fines! From 1 August, overdue fees will no longer be charged, and all historical overdue fines will be waived. Blue Mountains City Council has joined an international trend by removing these charges, given they do not provide a strong incentive for people to return items loaned to them. Overdue fines can also create a barrier for people wanting to use the Library. Chief Executive Officer Dr Rosemary Dillon said: “We want our community to be able to access resources for learning and recreation. Families, workers, those who are sick, self-isolating or simply time-poor, will now be able to enjoy the huge benefits of Library membership without the worry of any overdue fines”. Fees will still apply for lost or damaged items, to ensure that these can be replaced. The removal of overdue fees means Library staff will now spend less time administering fines, and more time providing services and helping customers with information and reference enquiries. Mayor Mark Greenhill said: “I am thrilled to be part of a Council that has had the foresight to make this historic decision on behalf of its community. The provision of free access to books and resources for entertainment and learning, is the key to a caring and healthy community. Overdue fees will no longer be a deterrent for any community member and, at a time when many people are doing it tough, this is a great decision from our Library”. “Our Blue Mountains Libraries are consistently innovating with programs and resources from free movie streaming to book club kits, from seniors’ programs, to coding for kids. They reinvented services through COVID-19 restrictions with Pop-Up Library @ Home and a huge range of children’s programs, and now they are ensuring that they have removed the final barrier to equitable participation. “This is yet another way Blue Mountains City Council is supporting the community during this difficult time”. The initiative to end library overdue fines has been made possible through additional funding from the State Government, secured through the statewide Renew our Libraries campaign in 2018. This was a joint campaign between Local Government NSW and the NSW Public Libraries Association, which began from a motion that Cr Romola Hollywood took to the LGNSW conference in 2017 on behalf of Blue Mountains City Council. This campaign led to an historic commitment from the State Government of an increase in funding to Council-run public libraries of $60 million over 4 years. “It’s wonderful that we are using our share of this funding to abolish libraries fines and make our libraries even more accessible to everyone in our community” Cr Hollywood said. r (L-R) Councillor Romola Hollywood, Reference & Marketing Librarian Theresa Lock, Community, Library & Customer Services Manager Vicki Edmunds and Mayor Mark Greenhill | Image/Article: Blue Mountains City Council

There is no doubt that the pandemic has affected us all and our way of life. In communities right across the country are local members who are unsung heroes. Those who are putting their hands up to help the less fortunate in a time of need. One of those rays of light is Emu Plains resident Julie Plimmer. Helping stop the spread of the virus, Julie is currently making cloth masks to sell to the community, with all funds raised going directly to charity. “I retired from full time work 2 years ago and shortly after suffered a brain haemorrhage. There were few changes to my life after that but consider myself lucky as more people die than survive” explained Julie to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. “I recently put my sewing skills to making cloth masks. I am selling my masks for $5 each, with all funds raised going towards brain injury and epilepsy research, both of which I suffer since my injury” she added. As recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Julie’s masks have three layers of material. They can be washed and used again, making them longer lasting than disposable masks. Her masks are for males and females. “I have been inundated with requests and made about 50 to date. I’ve got many orders to complete and am happy to hear from anyone who would like to purchase a cloth mask. I also suggest people purchase at least two, with one on and one as a spare. Once removed, the masks can be placed in a zip lock bag and then washed, keeping them safe” said Julie. Anyone wishing to donate any spare cotton material for the masks, whether it’s plain or patterned, are welcome to do so. If you would like more information or to place an order, you can contact Julie via email at julie.plimmer@hotmail.com. r

Ruby’s Selfless Act Local student Ruby Wiffen has made the courageous decision to cut her hair and donate it, all whilst raising valuable funds for charity this month. The brave 11-year-old has also enlisted the support of her school, who are rallying around her all for a good cause. “We would like to give a big thanks to Emu Plains Public School for their support of Ruby. She was due to have her hair cut in April this year, but due to COVID restrictions, we had to push this back to September. So, as you can imagine she is very excited to be cutting her hair and raising money” said Julie Wiffen, Ruby’s mother. Once her long locks are cut, Ruby will be donating it to Wigs 4 Kids. Her hair will then be made into a wig for children who have lost their hair due to medical conditions. The funds that she raises will go to the Nepean Cancer Clinic. In support of Ruby, the students at Emu Plains Public School will also be holding a special ‘Crazy Hair Day’ prior to having her hair cut off, with gold coin donations being made. “She has recently watched her Grandpa and Auntie go through cancer treatment and wanted to do something to thank the Nepean Cancer Clinic for their support and care. Ruby has set the goal to raise $2,000” explained Julie. If you would like to get behind and Ruby and donate to her important cause, visit her GoFundMe page at https:// gf.me/u/yjgkp6 or search ‘Ruby's cutting her hair for a great cause’. r

Athletes of all abilities are welcome. Their website and Facebook page will provide updates as the season approaches to ensure everyone is aware of the Centres’ COVID restrictions, changes to the format of weekly competition and registration information. “We will need more volunteers than ever this season to ensure our athletes, parents, officials and helpers can remain safe and healthy whilst still enjoying this great grass-roots sport” ended Kellie. Is it Time for a Family Review?
PRESCHOOL – YEAR 12
Enrolling Now www.wycliffe.nsw.edu.au
It is a good idea every now and again to take a look at your family and review what has been, and where you would like to focus in the future. This helps you to figure out what is truly important in the life of your family, so you can do more of it. The following questions may help you to do that. Gather around and have a discussion - share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. AS A FAMILY… • We would like to visit… • We have fun when we… • Our weaknesses are… • Our favourite family memories are… • We show appreciation for each other by… • We like the same movies, books, and music… • Places in the community we like to go to… • We are good at… • What we argue about the most… • What I tell others about my family… • The unique things we have in common… • Three goals for our future as a family… As part of any review, you have to be prepared for some hard truths. Be prepared to listen and acknowledge. It’s not about blame, it’s just about figuring out what you are doing well and what you can do better as a family. r

Safety Enhanced for Students at Emu Plains Public School Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has welcomed the announcement that safety for students at Emu Plains Public School will be strengthened with one of 88 new school crossing supervisors to soon be appointed. Stuart Ayres said Emu Plains Public School is amongst 80 schools across the state preparing to welcome a new school crossing supervisor as part of the NSW Government’s plan to fast track the appointment of 300 new school crossing supervisors within three years. “These appointments have been made possible thanks to the Government’s $18.5 million commitment to increasing student safety around schools. These new crossing supervisors will monitor children as they walk to and from school” said Stuart Ayres. “We look forward to welcoming our new school crossing supervisors over coming week’s months as they join more than 1,200 others across the state helping to keep primary school students safe”. Stuart Ayres said schools were invited to apply for a supervisor before the end of Term 1 and 80 schools were successful. Other measures to keep kids safe include reduced speed limits in school zones as well as high visibility safety treatments like signs, “dragon teeth” road markings and flashing lights. “We have seen an increase in traffic around schools in the past few months as many parents choose to drive their children to and from school as a way of maintaining social distancing” Stuart Ayres said. “Most school zones are in effect from 8:00 - 9:30am and 2:30 - 4:00pm. I am reminding all motorists to watch their speed and slow down when entering an active school zone, or when you see bus lights flash. This means children are nearby. Those who don’t obey the rules are putting lives at risk and face heavy fines and loss of demerit points”. Higher fines and demerit points apply within school zones, and the Speed Advisor app is available to alert drivers when they enter an active school zone. The Centre for Road Safety also provides road safety educational activities for teachers to use in the classroom and for families to share with their children at home on the Safety Town website https://www.safetytown.com.au/ For more information about the School Crossing Supervisor program, please visit: roadsafety. transport.nsw.gov.au/stayingsafe/schools/schoolcrossingsupervisorprogram.html r Feature Article: [Cover] Bree, Johnny and Emma of Emu Plains Public School and Stuart Ayres MP | Image Supplied

Is Zinc Good or Bad for my Joint Cartilage? The following appeared in a leading daily newspaper: ‘Korean study reveals zinc rich foods could be the cause for osteoarthritis’ Two different studies state the opposite: 1. Zinc protects articular chondrocytes (cartilage cells) through changes in Nrf2-mediated antioxidants, cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (Huang 2017) 2. Zinc protects chondrocytes (cartilage cells) from monosodium iodoacetate-induced damage by enhancing ATP and mitophagy (Huang 2020) So, is zinc or zinc rich food good or bad for cartilage? Short answer – sufficient zinc is vital for cartilage. While the entire newspaper article implicates zinc as a possible cause of osteoarthritis, the comments section of the same article states that the author of the scientific paper in question said 'No evidence available to date clearly indicated that zinc plays a causal role in osteoarthritis’. This article for one reason or another is why doctors say – never trust Dr Google! Zinc is used in > 3000 human-proteins ~10% of all body proteins; is vital for cell communication. Mitochondria produce energy that allows chondrocytes to maintain strong cartilage. The second study above details how scientists can, in a few days, induce osteoarthritis by injecting ‘monosodium-iodoacetate’ into animal joints. Monosodiumiodoacetate negatively affects 14 separate mitochondrial processes, precipitously lowering energy production, causing chondrocyte damage and death. Chondrocyte death results in
inflammation, then cartilage quickly thins, and animals get pain and all other hallmarks of osteoarthritis. In both animals and humans, the likely root cause of osteoarthritis is poor energy production by mitochondria of joint cells. Zinc supplementation of animals stops all 14 negative effects of Monosodium-iodoacetate, maintains mitochondrial function, and ‘almost completely reverse(s) the effects of monosodiumiodoacetate, suggesting (zinc’s) potential protective role against osteoarthritis progression. Great mitochondrial function requires getting great nutrition, plus the appropriate hormonal signals from things such as cartilage specific exercise, appropriate sleep and even sunshine. Good cartilage needs the same things. Bad diet, inappropriate/ too little exercise, poor sleep and not enough sun, are stressors that can lead to poor mitochondrial function, poor cartilage cell health and osteoarthritis. Zinc is an important nutrient, sufficient intake of which will help prevent osteoarthritis, but it’s just ‘one of many’ things that together as a team will support excellent joint health.

Lapstone Station Upgrade Underway
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that the Blue Mountains community will benefit from an upgrade to Lapstone Station which will provide safer and more modern access for customers using the station and create over 450 jobs during the project. Stuart Ayres said the upgrade is now underway after a construction contract was awarded to Arenco. The work is part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, an initiative to deliver safe, modern, and accessible public transport infrastructure. “This is an important upgrade which will make access to Lapstone Station and public transport easier for all customers, especially people with a disability and limited mobility, as well as parents and carers with prams” Stuart Ayres said. “It will also ensure the station has the amenities to support growth in public transport well into the future. The upgrade is expected to be completed in late
2021. “The project will create work for over 450 on-site workers as well as additional office staff over 17 months of the project” Stuart Ayres said. Lapstone Station upgrade will include: • a new lift connecting the footbridge to Platform 2 • a new family accessible toilet as well as male and female ambulant toilets • upgrades to the accessible car spaces and a new Kiss and Ride bay • upgrades to the ramp from the commuter car park to the pedestrian footbridge • a new station entrance to Platform 1 • accessibility upgrades to the platform waiting room • upgrades to station’s pathways, stairs, and platforms • upgrades to CCTV, lighting, and signage. “The NSW Government made the commitment to upgrade Lapstone Station and we are delivering it” added Stuart Ayres. Accessibility upgrades that have been completed in the Blue Mountains include Glenbrook, Hazelbrook, Springwood, Blaxland, Leura and Wentworth Falls stations. Work is currently underway at Faulconbridge Station, and in planning at Blackheath Station. The Transport Access Program has more than 470 projects either completed or underway across NSW as part of this important NSW Government initiative to provide access to public transport for everyone. Contactless Consultations Due To Coronavirus
Due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans. The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over, but it is looking like we have to create a new normal. SMALL PRINT
THE LAST WORD FROM THE EDITOR Last month in this very column, I asked 'August' to be kind. In turn, it was a very sombre month. If you're anything like me, I watched the news daily to keep abreast of the COVID-19 developments in both NSW and across other states. The message of mask wearing was and remains to be a consistent message. If not for your protection, definitely for those around you. The tightening of restrictions around school end of year gatherings and celebrations has been introduced, along with a series of limitations relating to specific activities (singing, choirs, wind-instruments). 2020 has been a journey like no other. Like many other small businesses, The District Gazette is locally owned. Our family and staff live (and love) local, we shop where you do, our kids attend the schools that your children do (or did), we dine at local restaurants and use local trades/services also owned by fellow members of the community. Like many businesses, we are grateful for the support of both our longstanding advertisers (and the new ones!) along with our loyal readers (just like you)! When reaching out to our advertisers be sure to tell them where you found them! It gives them (and us!) a real kick. Now give yourself permission to sneak away and immerse yourself in all the latest local happenings. Enjoy Your Community News. Remember, 'Help people. Even when you know they can't help you back'.
