Penrith and Blue Mountains communities will soon benefit from more pathology laboratories and services, with construction underway on a new, expanded pathology department as part of the $1 billion Nepean Hospital Redevelopment.HealthMinister Brad Hazzard said the new pathology department was being fast tracked as part of Stage Two of the Nepean Hospital Redevelopment, which will provide the Penrith and Blue Mountains communities with access to world-class health services well into the future.
Local councils and not-for-profit organisations can now apply for funding to facilitate programs aimed at helping reduce social isolation among seniors.
Mr Coure said this extra funding adds to the $1.2 million the NSW Government has already invested into 50 community-led initiatives to help reduce social isolation among“Seniorsseniors.areintegral to our communities and we appreciate the contributions they have made and continue to make,” Mr Coure“Thatsaid.is why we need to ensure they are empowered to continue being active participants in community life, no matter who they are or what language they speak.”
Council’s first electric vehicle, a Renault Kangoo, has covered just over 44,500km while being recharged using 100% GreenPower, with a recharging cost of only $911 over 3 years (as of Feb 2022).
“Council is really proud to launch Evie, our newest electric vehicle which is great for the environment with low emissions and reduced running costs compared to a standard car or van,” Cr Hitchen said.
Reducing Social Isolation Grants Now Open health facilities across NSW, with more than 130 currently underway.
Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the 100% electric vehicle benefits the community while serving as a reminder of Council’s commitment to a cleaner future.
In honour of Library and Information Week, Council reminds residents that membership to our Libraries is free to all NSW residents. There is no age limit, and each family member can receive a library card to borrow physical and digital resources. Children up to the age of 16 will need a parent or guardian to join them and sign their card. The Reducing Social Isolation for Seniors Grants Program has three categories that organisations can apply for:
• Category 1: $30,000 grants for known or existing projects.

“Some residents are unable to attend Council’s libraries in person, so Evie provides the opportunity for our Library team to go directly to community members – either putting smiles on young faces through our Toy Library Outreach Service or delivering books, DVDs and iPads to our less mobile or unwell library members, as part of the weekly Home Library Service.
“The new building being delivered as part of Stage 2 has been designed to seamlessly connect with the new hospital tower, which is already an impressive landmark in the Penrith skyline,” Mrs Davies said. The next stage of the Nepean Hospital redevelopment includes a new intensive care unit, in-centre renal dialysis unit, medical imaging and nuclear medicine services, cardiology services, more beds, community health services and a front of house for the hospital. Since 2011, the NSW Government has delivered more than 180 hospitals and Library Services Accelerate As Council Launches Second EV Community members of the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) now have easier access to Penrith City Council’s library services thanks to a new member of theEvie, team.Council’s second electric vehicle, is zooming around the City helping Library staff provide essential services to the community, including the delivery r Image /Article: Penrith City Council of books and toys to residents who need them.An official launch of the eco-friendly van was held last month in celebration of Library and Information Week.

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said she was very impressed with the transformation of the hospital campus, with more exciting changes to come.
“Council sees the importance of our libraries and how they enrich the lives of our residents; Evie was purchased to enable staff to better serve the community and enhance our Pop-Up Library offering in an environmentally conscious way.”
Minister for Seniors Mark Coure said a total of $600,000 is available through the Reducing Social Isolation for Seniors Grants Program to support initiatives, which play an important role in keeping seniors connected to their local community.

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said after years of neglect and band-aid solutions by the former government we are finally getting the Nepean Hospital that patients, medical staff and our community deserve.Construction of a new 14-storey clinical tower as part of Stage 1 is now complete, and floors are opening to patients and staff in stages this year.
“The new pathology department will be in a larger, purpose-built facility and provide significantly expanded pathology services to meet the needs of the growing local communities and boost health outcomes in the region,” Mr Hazzard said. Construction of the pathology department in a newly built facility in Building E (East Block) will include new laboratories, services, reception area and administration spaces, and is scheduled for completion in mid-2023.
The NSW Government is investing $3 billion on health infrastructure, as part of a $11.9 billion investment over the next four years.
“No one likes to be alone or feel disconnected from their community, especially not our seniors,” Mr Coure said.
“We have seen firsthand the benefits of using an eco-friendly vehicle and understand why it’s a valuable resource in assisting Council staff to deliver muchneeded services within our community.

Talk Talk’s clothing range is geared predominantly towards a men’s line, having previously produced t-shirts, hoodies, singlets, and shorts. The items have been welcomed by the community and sell out. Two new t-shirts are due to be released shortly.“When starting, it was never about the money or raising funds, but rather raising awareness. The first lot of sales I put the money towards assisting youth with seeking further help with psychologists. All proceeds now go towards Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk. They hold a very special place in my heart with what they are doing which is a tremendous step in the right direction for mental health” Cam stated. He believes that it’s important to create awareness around mental health.

Cam Bringing Mental Health to the Forefront
“One thing I used to say to people is if you have the flu, you go to the doctor because you can see that you’re sick. Why aren’t we going to the doctor if we aren’t feeling the best mentally? Is it because we can’t see it, or others can’t see that we are sick? It stresses the importance on really taking care of our minds and to reach out to people if we are struggling. Without support networks, life in challenging times becomes very hard. Creating awareness can ease the hardships that we all go through, big, or small. We can’t row our boats alone” he ended. Follow Cam’s journey by searching ‘Talk Talk’ on Facebook. You can contact him, where you will find everything from useful information, merchandise or somewhere to just have a chat.
Local Cam Williams is breaking the stigma that is attached to mental health, creating awareness and support. The inspiring role model also has his own line of clothing, Talk Talk, with proceeds going towards Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk. “I created Talk Talk in 2017. I was going through some mental battles myself prior to creating this brand. My question to myself was ‘If I’m going through this and no one knows, I wonder who else is?’” explained Williams to the District Gazette. “So, I put this forward to get the conversation started with my mates by creating a safe environment to talk about how we were truly doing. Then the support from the community took Talk Talk to where it is today” he continued.

All proceeds go to support the Blue Mountains District ANZAC Memorial Hospital and other local health-related organisations. Festival details are available at www.leuragardensfestival. com.au or by calling 0431 095279. You can also follow the Leura Gardens Festival on Facebook and Instagram.
Focus on listening, rather than responding. Being listened to helps children explore their feelings, put ideas into words, brainstorm solutions to their own problems and develop selfconfidence. Your full focus makes them feel respected and helps them know that their thoughts and feelings matter. Be open to talking about all feelings – joy, sadness, fear, anger, worry. Separate behaviour from emotion. Remember: “all feelings are OK, but not all behaviours are OK”. Children build their emotion vocabulary from the adults around them.
On display will be a feast of new growth, masses of flowers, gorgeous bulbs, and an amazing variety of cool-climate plants. This includes azaleas, rhododendrons, and peonies as well as magnificent deciduous trees which will just be coming into their full flowering glory.
In addition, the beautiful gardens at Everglades and Fairmont will also be on display.
Talk to your child about safety, where they feel safe, with whom they feel safe and what it feels like to be safe. Discuss ‘early warning signs’ (how their body feels) and encourage them to trust their feelings and instincts.
In addition to staying calm, approach your child with curiosity and non-judgment. You may feel temptation to lecture but check this urge at the door. During a hard time, would you confide in someone who only points out your faults? Probably not! If children feel judged, they are less likely to come to you with their struggles again. Choose the time and place carefully. A neutral space such as the living room can be ideal. Pick a time when you are not too busy to listen. For some children, they feel more comfortable talking about their emotions during parallel activities like a taking a drive in the car or going for a walk.
All tickets are valid for the four days of the Festival and are available on the Festival website now.
2022
There will be two magnificent gardens new to the Festival, Avila and Karoola. Avila is a wonderful example of what can be achieved in smaller spaces using a careful and informed plant selection and will be dressed in some impressive flowering bulb displays.Karoola is a garden on a larger scale and includes both formal and rambling bush settings and is remarkable for its extensive wisteriaSeveralplantings.favourites will return, including Ewanrigg, Fairways, Hill of Grace, Seasons and The Braes which puts on an impressive show across its vast, varied, and ever-changing acreage.
After two years of cancellations, organisers are delighted that the Leura Gardens Festival will be returning in 2022. The 56th Festival will be held for four days over the October long weekend, from Saturday 1st October to Tuesday 4th October.Theyplan to make the 2022 Festival a wonderful celebration for all garden lovers and look forward to welcoming everyone back to the upper Blue Mountains.
Prices are: • Single garden $10 • Three gardens $20 • All gardens $40 The Festival ‘hop on, hop off’ bus service runs between all gardens approximately every 30 minutes, with the cost for an all-day ticket being $10. Children are safest when they are listened to, respected, and believed by the adults around them. There are ways you can create a safe space for your child to share their concerns and worries with you.
The first thing to know is that open communication is more about how you are with your child than the words you use. It’s important that you remain calm during even the most difficult conversations. Big adult emotions can overwhelm children and cause them to ‘shut down’.

Right now, e-waste is growing three times faster than other waste. And with the way the world is becoming more tech savvy, we need to become more e-waste savvy.
They meet on Monday mornings each fortnight, providing two hours of childcare with volunteers from church, giving mums a break and time to enjoy a hot drink, snack, game, listen to an encouraging parenting related talk, cooking or evenMOPSPilates.Kids enjoy free-play, games, craft, a Bible story, and songs. On the alternating weeks, they now meet for MOPS Play, where the mums chat while watching their kids play, socialise and dance to music.
“We believe that mums need groups like MOPS to nurture community, personal growth, practical help, and spiritual hope, for mums to thrive and not just survive motherhood” Elise ended. You can find out more at https://www.facebook.com/MOPSEmuPlainsMothersofPreschoolers or by contacting them via email at mops@epcbc.org.au.
Recycling at our E-waste Drop-off Day keeps e-waste out of landfill and our community safe. from 9am-3:30pm
It’s so important to dispose of e-waste properly and responsibly. E-waste can’t go in your household bins.
Elise believes that groups like this are important to the local community.

“For many, including myself, being a mum is one of the hardest and most undervalued jobs we have ever done, particularly for a stay-at-home mum. Often mums have left their job and work friends and find themselves feeling stuck at home with their newborn, isolated and sleep deprived. Mothers are stronger together and can parent better when they support one another, finding a sense of belonging with other mums in the same life stage” she stated.

“We are holding an anniversary party and reunion church service soon. All who have been involved with our MOPS group are welcome to attend, as we celebrate the positive impact that our group has had on local mums and their families over the last decade. We will hear from MOPS Australia as they acknowledge the commitment of our group, share photos, and enjoy cake!” explained Elise Cox of Emu Plains MOPS.
Emu Plains MOPS (Mothers of Pre-schoolers) is turning 10, and preparations are underway to celebrate this important milestone.
The group was established by Emu Plains Community Baptist Church in 2012. Originally meeting in the Scout Hall at Glenbrook, then Emu Heights Community Centre, this year has seen them meet at the Christian Community Centre on Great Western Highway in Emu Plains.
A Decade of Support for Mums
“I love the two-hour break from my kids, but I have found the chats, friendships and support from the other mums, the kids’ carers and mum mentors, the most valuable” Elise said.

Did you know then that the Bible has loads to say about wisdom? There are whole books of wisdom in it, including the book of Proverbs. Why not check Proverbs out for yourself. Grab a modern version of the Bible or google it. And as you read, ask yourself, ‘Does Proverbs touch on the things that matter most in life?’, and ‘Does its wisdom line up with my experience of how the world works?’Nowthe proverbs aren’t promises, they reflect general principles. But here’s the thing, Proverbs makes this incredible claim, the claim that trusting and obeying the God of the Bible is the beginning of wisdom. It claims that relying on him is where it’s all at, and that this is the foundation on which to build a wise life.
4. If cell deaths continue, the mucosa takes on a finely granular look, and becomes friable (breaks easily); normal vascular pattern is lost

83,500 Australians suffer Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Patients are most frequently diagnosed at ages 15-35 and 55-70. Patients may be of any race, but likely to be white, Ashkenazi Jews.
1. Ulcerative proctitis – anus and rectum only
5. Eventually scattered haemorrhagic areas appear
4. Serosa: external layer of connective tissue around the colon UC generally affects the mucosa and submucosa, the muscularis in severe disease. Sharp borders exist between normal and affected (ulcerated) tissue.

Rarely the small intestine that meets the colon may also be inflamed. Symptoms may be limited to rectal bleeding alone. As more of the colon becomes involved, symptoms may include fever, abdominal and rectal pain, cramping, and an urgency to defecate without being able to go. Sufferers have ongoing diarrhoea unrelieved by over-the-counter medications (often also passing blood and puss). Dehydration, weight loss, fatigue, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, serious malnutrition and bone loss may result. Complications include liver, skin, eye, joint inflammation, perforated colon, increased colon cancer risk; in serious cases toxic megacolon, and possible death.
2. In an attempt to remedy things, the damaged/dying epithelial cells release distress hormones to activate local immune responses increasing local blood flow, attracting, and activating various immune cells

Have you ever wished you could go back and make a decision over again? The pages of history are littered with examples like this one: “We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.” By Decca Recording Co. rejecting the Beatles, 1962; or this one: “X-rays will prove to be a hoax” by Lord Kelvin, President of the Royal Society, 1893. Nobody wants to look like a fool, let alone be proved one! We need wisdom, wisdom for life.

The Emu Plains Lions Club were collecting; the shoppers were from Woolworths Emu Plains; and the charity was Westcare. And the result was just amazing! 14 full trolleys of toiletries, and cleaning products collected over just two days, which was Thursday 4th August and Friday 5th August. This collection was specifically for the flood affected communities of Wallacia, Londonderry, and Hawkesbury, where the residents still struggled with the aftereffects of the recent catastrophic weather conditions.

As I compile the final touches of the September edition, I look out my window to notice it is a typical Winter's day, cold, wet and blustery. Nothing at all like the weather we experienced only a week before. I can only hope, like everyone else, that better weather is around the corner as we turn the leaf into Spring. I always enjoy Spring, not only for the promise of wonderful weather, but the downward descent to Christmas. What's not to love about gorgeous Spring days, socialising and the festive lead up to Christmas?Thismonth Monica highlights the importance of child-safety in 'Parents Corner' given September plays host to National Child Safety week. While Camille dishes out some 'Dad' Jokes in 'Paws A While' in view of Fathers Day. Fathers Day is the first Sunday in September, a timely reminder to spend time with or reach out to the Fathers and Fatherly figures in our lives, and remember those taken too soon. Find a minute to reflect on the great moments. Enjoy 'Your Community News'. Make yourself a priority once in a while. It's not selfish. It's necessary.
