Bring Learning to Life Throughout last term Penrith Anglican College students in Years 5 and 6 have been studiously studying the Australian Government and completing projects on Australian Prime Ministers. Year 6 student Mark Nielsen was so inspired by the projects he penned a letter to The Hon Tony Abbott advising him about their lessons. Mark’s letter was handed to Janelle Walker, the Prime Ministers Advancer who organised for Mark and Headmaster of the College, Mr Mark Lewis to meet with the Prime Minister after he had finished addressing a conference in Penrith last month. Mark Nielsen said he was feeling nervous and very excited to be meeting the Prime Minister and representing the College. On the completion of his conference Mr Abbott walked straight over to Mark and Mr Lewis, shook hands and invited them for photos. Mr Lewis stated that, “he was proud of Mark’s proactive nature and enthusiasm as well as the great confidence shown meeting and presenting a gift to the Prime Minister”. According to Mr Nielsen meeting the Prime Minister was a Headmaster, Mark Lewis and Penrith Anglican College Student Mark Nielsen great day and one that he will never forget. meeting Prime Minister, Tony Abbott.

FAITH – ANGLICAN Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week.

Real Hope Hope is a funny word. Quite often, we talk about hope as we talk about a wish. “I hope winter won’t be cold! I hope our holiday will be good. “I hope I won’t lose my job. We don’t really know what winter will be like; we just hope that it won’t be as cold as last year! The Bible uses the word ‘hope’ very differently. When the Bible talks about hope, it talks about something sure and certain. Christian hope is real and secure. It is something we can look forward to with confidence. The Bible says that in God’s great kindness “he has given us new life. He gave us a living hope because Jesus Christ rose from death. Now we look forward to the blessings God keeps for his people...kept for you in heaven. Because Jesus has risen from the dead Christians have a real, living hope for the future. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we want to build hope into people’s lives. Everything we do, from the youngest children to our ministries among seniors, is centred on helping people know that when they put their hope in Jesus they can know that absolutely nothing will separate them from the love of God. By putting your hope in Jesus, you can know that you have new life, a fresh start with God! But even more than that, when you put your hope in Jesus you can know that God has promised to share heaven with you. What a great promise!

This is why people who hope in Jesus don’t have to wish about the future or cross their fingers and toes hoping for the best in a seemingly hopeless world. They know that by following Jesus they already have the best! We would love to see you at any of our activities during the week, or one of our Sunday services at 8.30 & 10.15am, 5 & 7pm, especially in July and August when we will be having a series of talks particularly focusing on the hope we have in God. It would be great to have you join us! Rev John Lavender

The Brumbies U/11-1’s were victorious in the NSWRL Immortals Challenge, winning the Final of the U/11’s Clive Churchill Trophy 6-0 over a very strong Cabramatta team. The Immortals Challenge is a knock out carnival where the top teams from Sydney and Country NSW play off for the chance to be crowned NSW Champions. The Mighty Brumbies boys played so strongly to overcome much bigger opposition to remain undefeated throughout the day. They were placed in a very tough pool group and needed to win all games to progress, defeating St Marys (Penrith) 6-0, Greenacre Tigers (Canterbury) 18-12 and Concord Burwood Wolves (Balmain) 28-0. Having finished top of their pool, they progressed to the semi-final against an extremely tough and talented St Johns Eagles (Canterbury) who everyone considered the tournament favourites. After a great start, the Brumbies led 12-0 but St Johns came charging back to level at 12-12 late in the match however the Brumbies hung on to go through to the final after scoring first. An extraordinary Grand Final developed, Coach Steve Quye was so proud of the outstanding efforts of his entire team and said “We were very strong right across the park. We only took the bare 11 players into the tournament and the boys were so tired following the final having played teams with squads of up to 18 players. I couldn’t be more proud of the team, it was a massive achievement.” Everyone at the Brumbies are very proud of their mighty Under 11-1’s and they congratulate all of their champion players and the coaching staff for winning the Immortals Clive Churchill Trophy.

FAITH - PADRE PIO CATHOLIC PARISH Fr Robert Riedling A: 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park

P: 4737 9735 W: www.padrepioglenmorepark.org.au Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy.

The Church as a Guide A few months ago I wrote about some of the benefits of weekly attendance at church, including the support and strength that comes from regular contact with people who share our faith. In a nutshell, I was saying that we need others to fulfil our potential as a redeemed Christian people. One aspect of regular Church attendance which I touched on, but would like to explore a little more this month, is that of the guidance given to the person of faith by the Church’s collective wisdom of two thousand years of grappling with how best to live as a Christian. The great Christian apologist CS Lewis, in his famous book Mere Christianity, talks of the way many people complain that religious doctrines detract from the reality of God; that doctrines and rituals are, to quote Lewis, often understood as “petty and pedantic and unreal” when put up against the reality of God. Lewis illustrates the usefulness of Church doctrines in helping to understand God by the giving the example of a man who stands on the shore looking out at the ocean towards an unseen country. This man then goes and looks at a map of the ocean he has just seen. Obviously, the map is less real than the reality of the ocean he has been gazing at, just “coloured paper” in fact, but the map is based on the experiences of many thousands of people who have sailed that ocean. It is also necessary to use the map to have the best chance to sail the ocean safely. Similarly, Church doctrines are based on the inspired experiences of thousands of followers of Christ and are essential if our Christian pilgrimage here on earth is to be fruitful. If you would like to join a group of Christians who can assist you to know Christ better and to be a part of a supportive, vibrant and active Christian community, we would love to welcome you! Contact details and Mass times are above. Looking forward to welcoming you! Fr Robert Riedling, Parish Priest

Soul Matters: Healing and Growth in Us Makes Life Better Others can wound us, and we can wonder why God doesn’t heal us. But often our freedom and peace will depend on healing or changing something inside of us. Jesus taught that we live from the insideout. While we might be treated badly, miss out on something we desire, or face tremendous difficulty, our response will still hinge on what is happening inside us. The injustice might be real but responses like revenge, hatred, bitterness, or striving for love–the things that rob us of peace and joy–point to the need for some inner healing or growth in us. As Jesus said, “out of the heart the mouth speaks”. So when we are rude to someone, respond angrily when we are deprived of something we desire, or lose peace when we are not applauded by others, these actions are speaking about our own heart. Our hurt, pride, insecurity, despair, low self-esteem and so on “reside” inside us and shape our outward life in very real ways. It is natural for us to want to pin the focus on the person who has hurt us, or the unfair circumstances, but our peace and happiness will still require work inside us because this is where the impact of our experiences lasts long after the event. We can’t control God or others, but we can give God access and permission to be at work inside of us to bring the healing and growth that will release our freedom, peace, and joy. Can you identify areas inside of you that require healing or growth? Ask someone you trust to help you be objective here.

8 July 2015 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

Then the question is: How will I find healing or grow in these areas of my life? To people searching for these things and a better life Jesus said, “Come to me and follow me”. To join a conversation about this column, go to www. paulmarshall.org and join my Soul Matters Blog. If you would like help to find healing and growth please email me at: paul@ fvc.org.au. PARENTS CORNER

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Student – Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Do You Have a Child Who is Different? A Quirky Kid? He or She Does Things Differently to Other Children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? I met a special needs teacher recently who has over thirty years experience teaching quirky kids. I put the above question to her. She said “those who could, would”. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four year-old child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 year-old child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The special needs teacher also said that the labels don’t help - lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, - they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? It’s very good advice. I’ve seen anxious children labelled as lazy. After I’ve had a chance to observe the child I have asked ‘lazy or terrified?’. The earlier that we seek help for our child, the better our child’s prospects will be. There is too much reliance these days on Dr Google. Too many parents are trying to diagnose their child’s difficulties and apply ill-fitting solutions. I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional – community health, paediatrician, clinical psychologist, occupational therapist, speech pathologist. The first point of contact should be your General Practitioner (doctor) because you can get financial assistance from Medicare to help with the costs if you get a treatment plan from your GP. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later. Of course, you are your child’s best advocate. So if you think that some pieces of information are missing or lacking, or you think you are not getting a quality service, it may be wise to seek another opinion. Keep pushing on because when you do find the right service for your child and he or she is happy and achieving (and possibly still ‘quirky’), it is worth all of the effort.

WHAT’S COOKING

Nepean Food Service

The Best Spaghetti Carbonara Easy • Time 24min • Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

400g Spaghetti 1 Tbsp Olive Oil 200g Sliced Flat Pancetta, Cut Into 1cm-Wide Strips 2 Garlic Cloves, Finely Chopped 3 Eggs, Plus 1 Extra Yolk 100ml Thickened Cream 2/3 Cup (50g) Freshly Grated Parmesan, Plus Extra To Serve 2 Tbsp Chopped Flat-Leaf Parsley Leaves

Method 1.

Cook pasta in a large pan of boiling salted water according to the packet instructions. Meanwhile, heat oil in a frypan over medium heat. Cook pancetta, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until beginning to crisp. Add garlic for 30 seconds, then set pan aside.

2.

Place eggs, yolk, cream and parmesan in a bowl. Season, then mix gently with a fork. Drain pasta, then return to pan. Quickly add egg and pancetta mixtures and parsley. Toss to combine - the heat from the pasta will cook the egg slightly and form a creamy sauce. Serve immediately with extra parmesan.

Nepean Food Services recently held its Volunteer Recognition Day. The day was a huge success and our volunteers enjoyed themselves. We would like to thank Guardian Funerals for their generous donation of a TV and continued support throughout the year. We extend our thanks to Nepean Rowing Club for their donation of gift hampers. We appreciate the support as these generous donations enabled us to provide them with a good event. We thank Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler, Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa and Stuart Ayres MP Member for Penrith for being on hand to thank our volunteers for all of their efforts. Nepean Food Services has over 80 volunteers who perform a range of services that enable clients to remain independent in their homes. These services include frozen meal deliveries, hot runs – a volunteer delivers and heats a meal for the client, social support, Luncheon clubs and special outings for our clients in the Penrith LGA and Warragamba/Silverdale. As volunteer Don has said: “Nepean Food Services is a good service and we as volunteers are happy to help. We gain satisfaction from building a good rapport with our clients and being entrusted with such an important responsibility.”

Tools for a Healthy Relationship Sandy, a mother of three young sons, felt extremely bored in her marriage with Mike. They were both super busy with the rigors of work and parenthood. Mike also felt a lack of intimacy and warmth in the relationship. Even though he was always “busy”, he felt lonely. So the two sat down and created a list of ideas to rekindle their flame: A weekend trip? Planting a garden? A nightly walk? Sure, any one of these activities would likely provide a temporary benefit. But the deeply engrained problem of feeling disconnected wasn’t going to be magically solved by a weekend get-away. There are important three lessons (and today is lesson 1) which are help with connection and greater intimacy, and each lesson is psycho-spiritually linked to the most powerful source of energy in the universe – love. Lesson:1 Use Active Listening Believe it or not, one research study found that couples who were married for many years were less perceptive of their spouse’s feelings and thoughts than newly married couples. Let’s face it – the longer we are with someone, the less focused we are on what they say and how they feel. As time goes on, we begin to make assumptions about our mates to the point they can become caricatured, much like a cartoon. If left unchecked, the attributes we assign to them end up distorting their true essence, which acts as a major roadblock to intimacy. The way to erase the caricature is to engage in active listening. This means allowing them to freely share what is on their mind, asking follow up questions for clarification and paraphrasing back key points to demonstrate understanding. An important aspect of active listening requires that we not jump to conclusions. In long term marriages, this is easier said than done. I encourage you to approach discussions with your partner discussions with an open mind/heart and listen with all of your senses to what is being said. Stay tuned for lessons two and three in the next two editions of the Gazette.

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist & Remedial Therapist Beautiful Health & Wellness – 0418 166 269

Fixing Chronic Migraines 'Migraine is a common distressing headache that can start in childhood but most commonly starts at age 20 or 30 and infrequently after 40. Migraine is more common in women possibly due to hormonal factors, and chronic migraines can really destroy a person’s quality of life. Typically migraines are one-sided moderate-severe throbbing headaches, often presaged by auras (visual disturbances such as bright zigzag lines, flashing lights, difficulty in focusing or blind spots lasting 20-45 minutes). They can last from 4-72 hours, accompanied by nausea/vomiting; sensitivity to light, sound & smell along with a laundry list of other symptoms such as difficulty concentrating, speaking, poor coordination, stiff neck & shoulders, tingling pins & needles, numbness, limb weakness, loss of consciousness, even paralysis!! Migraine involves hypersensitivity of certain brain areas to environmentally triggered release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and noradrenaline, resulting in altered cranial-bloodvessel flow. Some people can manage migraines with pharmacy medications, for many these aren’t effective. So what a possible solution? In practice we find that carefully releasing and lengthening all neck & shoulder muscles using specifically targeted muscle elongation therapy techniques, reduces the inflammation in the muscles through which the blood supply to the brain has to flow. This (1). Removes one of the main triggers that alters cranial blood flow leading to migraines & (2). Reduces severity and frequency of migraines, so sufferers for whom medications have proved ineffective can now often live symptom & medication free.

Helping the Kids Buy a Home As the property market continues to boom, housing affordability slides closer and closer to record lows and parents worry about how their children will ever afford to buy a home of their own. What many may not realise is that a number of options are available to parents wanting to give their kids a leg up into the property market and not all of them require handing over large amounts of cash. In fact, if you have some equity in a property you can help your child buy a home without putting your hand in your pocket at all. A Family Pledge or Parental Guarantee loan allows you to use some of the equity in your home to provide a guarantee for your child which reduces or eliminates the need for a deposit and can help them avoid Lenders Mortgage Insurance. As a Guarantor you are not required to make any repayments however by providing a guarantee you are entering taking on a financial commit so it is important to understand what you are entering into. If you would like to help your kids purchase a property (and move out of home) give us a call on 1300 72 68 48 and we’ll show you all the options and give you all the info you need.
