NSW Government Grant for Penrith City Softball Association Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, visited the Association’s batting cages at Surveyors Creek in Glenmore Park last month and was joined by Penrith City Softball Association’s President, Loretta Watts and 3 members of the Field family who play for various clubs in the Association. The visit coincided with the recent announcement that their Association was successful in receiving a $28,679 grant under the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program. The grant is for lighting the batting cages. “I am delighted to once again support the Penrith City Softball Association with State Government funding of facilities at Surveyors Creek in Glenmore Park. FROM THE EDITOR Yes, it’s already March! Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns have been finding their way onto the shelves since January. The kids have settled in nicely to their 'New Year' school routine, Mums and Dads are back at work, sporting calendars are full and we’re all back to our normal daily schedules. This month we have a wonderful publication full of interesting news, stories and events that are local to you! It was talk of the town as ‘Bakers Delight’ closed it’s doors for a brief period last month, read all about their fresh new and exciting look on page 3. As always, Narelle has some interesting information in Parents Corner, this month she discusses Family Violence on page 10, while Camille highlights the danger of chocolate and our four-legged friends on page 19. On page 7 we detail an exciting new project in Glenmore Park for women, perhaps you or someone you know may like to be involved. We received an overwhelming response to our Luddenham Raceway Giveaway in last month’s publication. A huge amount of entries were received, making it very difficult for the District Gazette team to choose a winner! Find out who the lucky winner was, and what they had to say about their District Gazette on page 17. Thank you to all that entered. Here at the District Gazette 'We Love Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Fresh New Look for Bakers Delight
Member for Mulgoa
Bakers Delight in Glenmore Park has an exciting new look, thanks to some renovations that were made early last month. The business, which was closed for ten days, has undergone it’s biggest changes yet since opening in the Glenmore Park Town Centre. “We’ve changed the layout of the production area. There’s a new counter, sales area and racks. The bulk of the renovations were done at the front of the store said Zavera Rolands, Franchisee/Owner of the business. Customers will now have a greater shopping experience at the store, that will make picking that loaf of bread or hot cross bun easier to do. “The cabinets that hold our products are now bigger and brighter with the help of new LED lighting. The racks are wider spaced and not so close together. The improvements have certainly opened up the space and everything is easier to see explained Zavera. The short closure of the business meant that locals were unable to buy their favourite products, causing some concern on social media. “The level of support from the community was overwhelming. It really was nice to know that people were asking how we were whilst the improvements were being done. We had a huge response on the day we reopened from customers. We appreciate how much the local community appreciates us she said. Bakers Delight would like to thank everyone for the wonderful support and all the positive feedback they have received since reopening. This year, Bakers Delight hopes to continue supporting the community, through events such as fundraising and sponsorship. Drop by and see Zavera, Jody and the team today and have a look for yourself.

FAITH – ANGLICAN Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week.
Looking Forward to a Long Weekend? Isn’t it good that most of us get four days off work or Uni or school to reflect on the most important events in history? Good Friday is the day we remember Jesus’ death. Easter Sunday, we celebrate the fact that this very same Jesus rose from the dead. At the heart, at the very centre of Christianity, is the promise of forgiveness and the sure, certain hope of life eternal. Why can Christians be so confident? It is because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead! How can we know these things? Why did Jesus die? What does it mean that Jesus rose from the dead? What does this have to do with you and I? We all know that there is a lot more to Easter than Hot Cross Buns, Easter eggs and a few days off. The very heart of Easter is the very heart and centre of Christianity! It is the good news of Jesus – of forgiveness, a fresh start with God, peace, joy and security in this life on earth and then eternal life with God in heaven after we die. In the apostle John’s account of Jesus’ life, he writes, “Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?‘” (John 11:25,26) ‘Do you believe this?’ is a good question! I pray that this Easter

6L]H ‡ %R[HG ‡ 0DGH LQ ,WDO\ Last month, Nepean Food Services, facilitated by Tanya Hetherington, hosted the February Friendship Day. The group of 14 guests were treated to an exciting morning of activities that centred on ‘friendship’ and finished with lunch with one another. The luncheon began with a welcome and a picture activity. The group chose a friendship picture that best reflected themselves and their thoughts on friendship. They prepared a friendship poem together that they were able to take home and share with family members. The group, led by Tanya, then put their artistic flair and creativity to the test and made ‘friendship bracelets’. Lunch was then served, with friendship slides and music played in the background. All the attendees enjoyed the luncheon and were invited to attend the next one on the 31st of March. A big thank you to Tanya, Ines, James, Christine, Mark, Sandra, Ellen and the team at NFS for making the event a big success.

Why the Long Face? I’m sure all of you have heard the joke about the horse that walks into a bar and is asked by the barman, “Why the long face?” Of course, the joke works, as most popular jokes do, because of the unexpected nature of the punchline (and, in this case, the fact that it comes so quickly!) – we pause to think what it might mean and then realise it refers to the anatomy of the horse, not its mood! Now that the Christian calendar has moved into Lent, the season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, (which began with Ash Wednesday on 18 February), you might expect to see a lot of Catholics and other Christians walking around with long faces too! Perhaps you will, but this ought not to be the case. Indeed Lent is a season which should be lived out joyfully for it is the Christian season which helps us prepare for the highlight of the year, Easter. We are asked to do three things more intently during Lent in order to help us draw closer to God at this important time of the year: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These three activities ought, of course, to form a part of the life of all Christians at all times, but Lent is an opportunity given to us for a more intense focus on these practices. Quite often you will hear Catholics, older Catholics particularly, talk about “giving something up” for Lent, most popularly sweets or alcohol. It is hardly surprising then that as Lent approaches some people view it with a certain foreboding and as something that will have to be endured. Yet if our perspective is entirely
negative, we will never benefit from this season as much as we should. Better instead to ask ourselves, “In ‘giving up’ something this Lent, what will I gain?” Our Lenten focus should never be entirely on ourselves. The discipline in depriving ourselves of something we enjoy for six weeks (fasting) and giving the money saved to a worthwhile cause (almsgiving), and underlining it all with prayer, helps us to appreciate how most of us have more than we need and assists us to look outside ourselves towards others and their needs. Lent should never be lived in and of itself. As we journey through Lent we do so in the knowledge that something greater is to come – Easter! Just as Christ suffered on the cross, died and was buried, so too he rose again. We move from darkness to light, from death to life. With one eye on the future glory of Easter and its promise of salvation and eternal life, we live our Lenten journey with an inner joy for our hope lies in the resurrection of Christ. Lent, lived in and of itself, leads only to despair and a sense of hopelessness. This is not true Christianity but rather a loss of perspective. Christianity is to be lived always in the light of the Resurrection, even Lent. So, a happy and joyful Lent to you all and remember, there is no justification for “long faces” at this time! Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and familyoriented community. Our Mass times and contact details are above. Looking forward to welcoming you! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling, Parish Priest

New Project for Women’s Group
Two Arrested After Police Raid Hydroponic Cannabis House
Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services were recently awarded a grant for a project that was based around their ‘Taste of Everything’ Women’s Group. The project outcome is a quilt that the women will plan, research, design and create, celebrating the lives of powerful and influential Women of Glenmore Park. The project is open to all women in Glenmore Park, and will culminate in presentation of the quilt to Council at a morning tea event. The project is designed to build a sense of identity and belonging for Glenmore Park, reduce social isolation, and engage more women in Glenmore Park. For more information, contact Julie Collins on 4733 1499.
Organised Crime Squad detectives have arrested two men in the Sydney CBD and charged them in relation to a hydroponic cannabis house located in Sydney’s west. Just before 9am on Tuesday 10 February 2015, detectives executed a search warrant on a home at Darug Avenue, Glenmore Park, where they located 96 cannabis plants growing in four rooms and more than 2kg of loose cannabis. The drugs seized have an estimated potential street value of more than $190,000. About 1.30pm (on that day), Organised Crime Squad detectives arrested two men, aged 43 and 24, at an office block in the Sydney CBD. Both men were charged with cultivation of a prohibited plant (greater than commercial quantity). Both men were refused bail to appear at Central Local Court. Soul Matters Here is a controversial statement based on the teaching of the Bible: We can only find God and the love, acceptance and peace that the human soul craves, through Jesus Christ. Now this may be controversial because we like to think that everything that everyone believes is right – particularly when it comes to God. We want to believe that all of the major religions really represent the same God, and that all spirituality is of equal benefit. But if you look into what the major religions actually teach, you will find that each describe their god or the being they venerate quite differently – from quite vindictive to loving; from dead to alive and active in the world. Alternatively we might conclude that there is no god, or go along with our own idea of God. But I think that this saying is true: The truth is the truth whether we believe it or not. In other words, what we believe is not true simply because we believe it. We can believe things that are not true, and reject things that are true. In both cases the truth is still the truth, and if our soul is to thrive, the challenge is to find it. In summary I believe my controversial statement because the Bible teaches that only Jesus can deal with the sorts of overarching problems that burden the human soul, such as sin that fills our souls with guilt and shame, and death that brings fear. These must be addressed to allow us to live well, and this is at the core of what Easter is about. The Bible teaches that God loves the world (us) and sent his Son, Jesus to save it (us). He was qualified for the job as a man who could sympathise with us, but is fully God.
The C a v a l c a d e of s t ory and F ashio n Zonta Club of Nepean Valley Inc Penrith Paceway
Besides his deity, I make my controversial statement because the Bible tells stories about God’s kingdom – his reign or activity expressing his love and power – breaking into the world through Jesus as he prayed for people. Sick people were made well, and demonic oppression removed. Jesus inaugurated a season of liberation for struggling people, and this continues to happen around the world as people pray in his powerful name. The Bible teaches that all people will face judgement before God, but that Jesus dealt with our future judgement by dying on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. He removes our guilt and shame. And because Jesus was resurrected (ie. that he defeated death), all who trust in him will also be resurrected after physical death and live in the future age where there is no more crying, pain, tears or death. The shadow of judgment and death over the human soul is removed and we can start to live with freedom and joyful expectation of good ahead. My controversial statement is further supported if the Bible is true in teaching that after Jesus rose from the dead he ascended to the right hand of God – to the place of power and authority. He then sent the Spirit of God to express his love and power in the lives of ordinary people like you and me who trust in Jesus. I know that’s all a bit technical, but if the Bible is anything to go on, it is only through Jesus that we will find God and the things that our souls deeply crave. I urge you to ponder these things as Easter comes around again. Pastor Paul Marshall

Penrith Commuters can Slash Travel Times Thanks to New Smart Work Hub
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith and Minister Assisting the Premier of Western Sydney last month launched a new Government-funded work hub that will allow Penrith residents to work closer to home and slash commuting times. Stuart Ayres said the new Penrith Smart Work Hub featured modern, new facilities that will enable business and trades people to carry out duties in a central “hub facility without compromising on productivity. “Around 33 per cent of workers living in Western Sydney commute outside the region for work. Their average travel time is up to 50 per cent longer than the Sydney average, Stuart Ayres said. “By locating Smart Work Hubs in areas with large commuter populations such as Penrith we can take advantage of technology to support smart working practices. “ Stuart Ayres said Penrith’s new facility was part of NSW Trade & Investment’s Smart Work Hub Pilot Program, a NSW Government initiative designed to improve productivity for the State. “We’ve committed $1.5 million towards this pilot to establish five hubs – three in Western Sydney and two on the Central Coast, Stuart Ayres said. “Each hub is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities,

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Do you know a child living in a home where there is a lot of yelling and swearing, throwing things, pushing or hitting? This is called family violence. However, family violence is much more than physical abuse. It also includes: Emotional abuse (such as manipulation, isolation, put-downs, mind games); Financial abuse (withholding money to buy groceries, and other essential items); Sexual abuse; Threats of violence and revenge; Property damage, smashing belongings; Harming pets. Witnessing family violence can be very upsetting and frightening for children. These children live in a “climate of fear”. Family violence is an abuse of the intimate, trusting and safe relationship that a family should provide. 1 in 4 families in Australia experiences family violence. Apart from the emotional impact on individuals, families, and communities, family violence costs the Australian economy $13 billion per year. Many children who witness family violence have been found to have higher levels of behavioural and emotional problems than children who live in a safe and nurturing home. While most children escape without physical injury they may bear emotional scars which in many cases can last a lifetime. They may have poor physical and mental health as adults and their early experience of living with violence may influence the relationships and lifestyles they choose as adults. Violence at home can make a child feel really sad, angry, helpless and confused. Often children think they have done something to cause the violence in their family. Children living with family violence spend a lot of time and energy worrying and feeling anxious about things that they shouldn’t need to. Children should be free to spend their time and energy on growing, playing, learning, feeling safe and loved, and exploring relationships. Children need: • Protection from physical, emotional, sexual, and verbal abuse • To know that bullying, abuse, and violence is not OK • To know that other children have had similar experiences • Encouragement to talk about their feelings and worries • Reassurance that it is not their fault • Support from a trusted adult • Good role models for managing anger and solving problems • Support with schooling • Professional help for behavioural and emotional problems • To know where they can get help in an emergency. Support for the abused parent can improve the parent’s capacity to protect his/her children. Family violence is just plain wrong. There are no possible reasons that can justify one partner being abusive towards another partner or a parent being abusive to a child. Often, we don’t know what to do to help children and families in our neighbourhoods and communities. If you hear family violence going on in a home near to you, the first thing you can do is call the Police. If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, you can ring the Domestic Violence Line for help on 1800 656 463. The Domestic Violence Line is a statewide free-call number and is available 24 hours, seven days a week. It is time for both men and women to say “enough” – violence is never OK.

It was a wonderful day for the students of Regentville Public School last month when their annual swimming carnival was held at Ripples Aquatic Centre, St Marys. There were many excited students who competed in events throughout the day. Congratulations are extended to all the children who attended for their wonderful behaviour throughout the day. Thank you to Mr Miskell and Mrs Healey for their organisation of a very successful swimming carnival. A huge thank you is extended to the parents who assisted throughout the day in a variety of roles including time keeping. The wonderful way the parents and teachers work together to provide the very best for our students is a real strength of Regentville Public School.

The Grief of Miscarriage The inconsiderate things people say after a Miscarriage. Miscarriage is a difficult grief to deal with. Many clients have told me the inconsiderate comments said to them following a miscarriage, such as, “At least you know you can fall pregnant and “It’s great that you didn’t get too far into your pregnancy. What you can do after a miscarriage: Share your story As 1 in 4 pregnancies result in miscarriage, there are a lot more women out there to share your story with and they with you. Healing Talking about your grief helps you to heal and deal with it. Understanding your own grief and what you need to do will help you cope with your “New Normal. Create support Share your story, be vulnerable and connect with others who have suffered a miscarriage. This will help create a positive, supportive community. Normalising grief You can help the general community to understand what grief after miscarriage is like. People often believe that you shouldn’t be grieving because it wasn’t a baby yet. Be sure to share your story with others Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. As a specialist in her field she has helped people to move through their unresolved grief, to feel less isolated and alone. Using her training Cait seeks to empower her clients to breakthrough and rediscover the joys of a full and rewarding life. To help them come to terms with their “New Life without their loved one. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD. How can you Beat Today’s Biggest Health Problems? An unhealthy lifestyle is the common contributor to today’s biggest health problems. Today, chronic conditions such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity are our biggest killers. Here are 3 top recommendations to keep your heart, mind and body in optimal health! 1. Healthy Diet – Well that’s no surprise! But you really do need to quit the junk and fast food. Your heart, brain and overall health are harmed by such foods high in sugars, trans fats, additives and salt. There's no getting around it. Replace them with real foods like fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil eg the Mediterranean diet. 2. Daily Exercise – You brush your teeth every day and exercise is equally as important. Turn off the TV and computer and take a 30 minute walk, jog, swim, exercise or yoga class. You don’t have to go overboard - even 10 minutes here and there during the day counts. Just get moving! 3. Weight Loss – Studies show that too much body weight puts your health at greater risk. When you take in more calories than you burn, you put on weight. When your body is deprived of important vitamins and minerals, you become deficient in the nutrients essential for effective weight loss. It’s that simple! Getting back to your ideal body weight through healthy eating and exercise will help you avoid serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, obesity and stroke.

Council Grants for ANZAC Events
Easter Egg Nests
Penrith City Council is offering support to local community groups wanting to host commemorative ANZAC events. The 2015 ANZAC Centenary Mayoral Grants Program is designed to assist and encourage projects and events which recognise the involvement, sacrifice and service of Australian servicemen and women in the First World War. The small grants of up to $1000 are available to community groups, schools and other educational institutions and nonprofit organisations across the Penrith Local Government Area. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the grants have been capped at $1000 to give as many groups as possible the opportunity to commemorate this important milestone. “The 100th Anniversary of WW1 is a significant event and one that our entire community should be able to participate in,” Cr Fowler said “These grants will enable local groups to coordinate special events or projects, and give the community an opportunity to learn about the sacrifice made by those who fought or supported the war, and pay tribute to those who lost their life.” The funding is available now until Saturday 18 April 2015. To apply, please download an application form from: http:// www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au. For further information, please email cdickson@penrithcity. nsw.gov.au

Rate Cut Fever – But will you Benefit? The Reserve Bank has reduced the cash rate to its lowest level in over 60 years and the banks rapidly passed on the cut in full, with one of the majors actually reducing their rate by more than the cut. And it wasn’t only the variable rates the fell, fixed rates also tumbled indicating that the banks think that we are in for a prolonged period of low rates. On top of this, the competition between the banks is such that never seen before discounts and “under the table” rates are being offered to attract new clients. There has never been a better time to review your loan to see what’s on offer. Reducing the rate on a $350,000 loan by just 0.50% will save you over $100 per month, or reduce the term of your loan by nearly three and a half years. At Great Aussie Dream we will review your current loan free of charge and with no obligation. If you decide to refinance we will take care of all of the paperwork making the process simple and stress free. Are you Still Waiting for the Day That You’ll be Fit, Healthy and Looking Your Best? How many times have you told yourself that you’ll start living healthy tomorrow? Or next week? After you’ve had just one more pizza dinner and one more lazy day on the couch...Then you’ll commit yourself to eating right and exercising regularly, right? It’s time to realise that this line of thinking is a sneaky little trap. One that fools all of us at one point or another. You see, when you put off healthy living to some designated day in the future, you’re putting the responsibility of change on your future self. Tricky, since your future self doesn’t even exist yet. Only you, in the present moment, are capable of making amazing change happen. Being fit and lean is the result of thousands of healthy choices – all made in the present moment. So give your future (fictional) self a break and start making real, tangible progress towards your goal – right now, in this moment. Begin right now by calling or emailing today to get started on an exercise program that will enhance your life and bring your goals from fantasy to reality. Merinda, Designer Body

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.
entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital. You can download the entry form from our website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy. Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital. All entries must be received by 7pm on Wednesday 1st April 2015. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope. Winners will be drawn and notified at 10am on Thursday 2nd April 2015. Check out our website for more information. www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

War Museum for Governor Phillip Manor Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith, met with Mr Xolani Maloi, Facility Manager of RSL LifeCares Governor Phillip Manor, Penrith to announce their successful application for funding through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program. "I am pleased to announce that the RSL LifeCare will receive a grant of $10,000 under the 2014 Community Building Partnership Program to create a War Museum," said Stuart Ayres. The Master Plan of RSL LifeCare includes establishing a War Museum in each of its Villages to provide valuable and informative information regarding our military history. The displays will include items such as service medals, photographs, war time uniforms and other items of historical significance from the Army, Navy and Air Force. Mr Maloi said RSL LifeCare is thrilled to be receiving this funding which will be used toward the betterment of the Penrith Village. "The creation of this museum will provide a space for the residents and visitors to recognise and reflect on the Australians that have served and are still serving our country,” added Stuart Ayres.
