The 2015 FIBA Under 19 World Championship for Women comes into sharp focus for the Jayco Australian Gems, following the announcement of the team to take on the region’s best at the 2014 FIBA Oceania Under 19 Championships. Head Coach Paul Goriss has brought together a talented young team that will be favourites in the FIBA Oceania region, under a new and exciting tournament format. Traditionally a two-team, best-of-three series between the Jayco Gems and the New Zealand Tall Ferns, this year’s tournament has been expanded to include the surrounding Pacific nations as part of a ten-team competition. The Jayco Australian Gems will travel to Suva in Fiji for the tournament from 1-6 December, where they will face the likes of Fiji, Samoa, Guam, Tahiti and New Zealand in a six-day competition, with the winner securing the region’s sole place at the 2015 FIBA Under 19 World Championship for Women. Headlining the team is Bryden’s Sydney Uni Flames WNBL and Penrith Panthers WCL guard Tahlia Tupaea (Glenmore Park), who captained the Jayco Australian Under 17 Women’s Team to a fifth-place finish at the 2014 FIBA Under 17 World Championship for Women.

The Greatest Gift of All On a scale of 1 to 10, where do you sit on buying your Christmas presents? “1” represents having all your gifts purchased in the Post Christmas January sales. Everything wrapped and hidden away in cupboards and draws just waiting to put them under your Christmas tree weeks before most of us have even realised that Christmas is just around the corner! Or are you a “10”? Someone who is still running around the shops at the very last minute, even on Christmas Eve, looking for that perfect gift. Our family is probably around an 8 or 9, trying to be organised, but often leaving it to the last minute! It is just as well that our good God got Himself organised for Christmas! The Bible’s book of Galatians tells us how at just the right time “God sent his Son, born of a woman” into our world? Why did He do this? Why did He have to do this? At the beginning of the Gospel of Matthew we read how an angel of the Lord, appeared to a very startled Joseph, the soon to be husband of the pregnant Mary, explaining that the child she would give birth to “will save his people from their sins.” This is why God’s gift of Jesus is such a precious gift! You and I need this gift! We need to be saved! At its heart, Christmas is a celebration that God, in His great love and kindness, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be born so that you and I could be saved and forgiven for the fact that none of

us treats God as we should, nor gives Him the honour that He deserves. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC), we would love to celebrate and share with you this extraordinary good news, the greatest gift of all, the gift of forgiveness and a fresh start with God. Even if you are someone who does not usually come to Church, I know that you will find something helpful and encouraging for you and your family in the weeks leading up to Christmas itself. There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate with us. For example, check out our ad on this page with our ‘Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganzas’! You won’t want to miss this! We also have our excellent Community Carols in the Park on Sunday 21st December at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park. In your planning for Christmas 2014 don’t forget how God in His great goodness and kindness, has given us the greatest gift of all – His Son, Jesus! We’d love to see you to share the joy of this great time of year. Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635. Rev. John Lavender
McHappy Day 2014 Breaks Record Australians have dug deep this McHappy Day, donating a record-breaking $3.2 million over the weekend to help Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) support seriously ill children and their families. To put this into perspective, this year’s fundraising total equates to over 24,600 nights’ accommodation in a Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. While final figures are still being tallied, in NSW and the ACT, in excess of over $1 million has been raised. A number of celebrities and well-known personalities, including Australian actor Ryan Kwanten, got behind the event by visiting McDonald’s restaurants across the country to help raise funds for the charity on the day. Community groups also played a big role with Scouts groups, police and numerous local businesses giving up time to help collect donations or provide gifts to be raffled on the day. “It’s a fantastic result for Ronald McDonald House Charities – Australians have truly shown us their support and contributed valuable funds which will allow us to expand our programs so we can help even more families in need, said Malcolm Coutts OAM, CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities. “I want to acknowledge the efforts of everyone who has been involved with McHappy Day and thank the volunteers who have been behind McHappy Day every year, helping raise funds for families with seriously ill children, while making it a fun and enjoyable day, said Mr Coutts. To date, McHappy Day has raised over $31 million for RMHC. All funds raised go directly to RMHC to support programs such as the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The 14 Houses across Australia have provided more than 89,000 families with a home-away-from-home while their child underwent treatment for serious illness at a nearby hospital. While McHappy Day is now over, RMHC needs ongoing support so that it can continue helping families with seriously ill children. Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy.
Why Bother with the Church? “I believe in God and I pray, and so why do I need the Church?” “I believe in God but I don’t believe in religion, especially institutionalised religion.” Ask any Christian pastor if they’ve heard comments like this before and I’m sure you’ll meet with a resounding “Yes!” On the surface, of course, they seem like reasonable comments. After all, Jesus never had the intention of beginning a church, or even a new religion for that matter. Jesus was Jewish, and an observant Jew at that. Like any good Jewish person, he knew the scriptures, kept the Sabbath and the dietary laws and attended Jewish religious festivals. He had no problem with the essence of the Jewish faith at all. What concerned Jesus was the manner in which some of the Jewish leaders were more occupied with maintaining their own status and the minutiae of laws and regulations that were part of the faith than they were with worshipping God. In essence, Jesus tried to shift the focus back to God and help people understand that the scriptures and the laws were a means to an end, not an end in themselves. And this is a key lesson for us. It has been said, more than once, that many people manage to find God in spite of the Church and its leaders! Whilst this is meant as a bit of a joke and a none-toosubtle dig at the Church as an institution, it is all too easy to use this as an excuse to dismiss the Church as simply an obstacle to faith and ignore it and its teachings altogether, throwing the
baby out with the bathwater as it were. I wonder whether the tendency to do this is often borne of laziness and prejudice as opposed to a well thought through decision. So, why be a member of a church? What has the Church to offer its members as a means of deepening their faith in God? Perhaps the best argument I have heard in this regard comes from the great apologist and author, C S Lewis (yes, the same writer who authored the Narnia chronicles!) He spoke of the teachings of the Church (including the difficult ones!) as a type of map which others have drawn up through centuries of experience. Just as you would be apprehensive to travel in a foreign land without a map that has been drawn up and perfected by those who have travelled the same place before you, so too the Church and its doctrines will assist the person of faith because its teachings have been developed by those who have travelled the road of faith before us. Trying to live a life of faith without listening to the advice of others with experience is reckless and will result only in frustration and disappointment. Next month I’ll move from the question of the usefulness of Church teachings to explore the issue of attending church on Sundays. Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and familyoriented community. Looking forward to welcoming you! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling, Parish Priest

World COPD Day One in seven Australians 40 years or older has COPD and half of those who have progressed to a stage where they are experiencing symptoms will not know that they have it.1,2 November 19 is World COPD Day and Lung Foundation Australia is raising awareness of the prevalence and impact of COPD. COPD is a leading cause of death in Australia. COPD is a lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic asthma that isn’t fully reversible. It is important to recognise the risk factors and symptoms of COPD so that you can get an early diagnosis. The main risk factors in Australia are: • Current or past history of smoking • Occupational exposure to dust, gas or fumes There are also some genetic causes of COPD. Typical symptoms include breathlessness, a cough that won’t go away and phlegm production. Finding COPD early gives the best chance to slow down lung deterioration and start managing your symptoms. Lung Foundation Australia encourages people 35 years or older who have a history of smoking or had occupational exposure to dust, gas and/or fumes to have a lung health check. COPD is largely preventable and treatable. While there is no

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School
Soul Matters A Q&A program aired recently on TV focussed on the serious issue of mental illness. It’s not a new thing of course, but the problem does seem to be growing. Most of us would know someone who suffers from depression or some other mental illness. In the context of the Q&A discussion a panellist raised a question that caught my interest: “Why are we so unhappy as a society when we have everything that we want?” The financial pressure on farmers was raised as a major cause of depression and suicide in rural areas. I imagine that struggling to pay a mortgage in Glenmore Park might also bring despair and depression, as would other relentless challenges in life. Dr. Archibald Hart, a leading US psychiatrist, makes a connection between stress and depression. He says that when our stress levels are too high, our brain chemicals are depleted— particularly a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Now I am in no way an expert in this field, but I do understand from experts like Dr. Hart, that “stress is about using too much adrenalin”. And when we consistently abuse the adrenal system this can deplete brain chemicals like serotonin, and contribute to depression. The reality is that often our lifestyle is not balanced because we must work very hard—and endure high levels of stress— in order to earn the money that we need to pay for things. Australia scores within the top few nations in the world when it comes to working hours. There is nothing wrong with some
good hard work. But when our lifestyle becomes unbalanced and gets too fast, we risk abusing our adrenal system because we just weren’t made to live at this sort of pace or to absorb this sort of stress. Adrenalin makes us feel good, but it was designed by God to help us cope in emergencies, and if our bodies are forced to operate for too long at that heightened emergencymode, eventually something will break down. If chemicals like serotonin are depleted we are at risk of mental illness. So an important contributing factor to mental illness is our lifestyle, and specifically how we think about ourselves, establish a sense of our own value, and find peace. Our culture wants to convince us that owning more and better things makes us better or happier people. This means earning more, and earning more means working more; and as the pace and complexity of life increases, so does stress, adrenalin, and the risk of mental illness. In the Bible Jesus makes an invitation to people who are tired, worn out, spinning their wheels to establish their value before others and before God: “Come to me. Get away with me and you will recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or illfitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” The Bible calls Jesus the Prince of Peace—as we surrender to him and allow him to lead us in a new love-filled way to live, peace comes to our souls and lives instead of stress. PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Last month, I offered some strategies for calming young children when their emotions are getting overwhelming for them. This month, it’s all about the older children, those over 6 years of age. Some parents get scared of their children’s strong emotions. They try to dampen them down, or they dismiss them, encourage or bribe the child into feeling something else, jolly them up, redirect them, or even rescue them. Have a think about which emotions your parents didn’t cope with well when you were a kid growing up – anger, sadness, curiosity, fear, joy, shame (humiliation). When reflecting on this with parents, they have said to me “my parents didn’t cope with any of the so-called ‘negative feelings’, if I got sad, scared, or angry they would tell me to go to my room and come out when I was happy”. Now these parents find that they have difficulties in helping their own children process the same feelings because they have never been shown how. They also have difficulties accepting that these feelings are OK within themselves, and this leads to shame and self-loathing, which then leads to all sorts of dysfunctional ways of coping such as emotional eating, retail therapy, drinking, smoking, depression, or anxiety. All feelings are OK (yes, even anger). Feelings are a normal part of being human. It’s what we do with our feelings that counts! In my work with children, I always encourage them to locate the particular feeling in their body. This is based on neuroscience (which I don’t have enough space here to go into in detail). If a child can become adept at picking up cues from their body that they are getting overwhelmed they can calm themselves quicker. It’s like an early warning system. Support the child to locate where he feels the anger in his body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head. It’s the same process for adults and many of the parents I have worked with say they feel it in their chest. Here are the steps to calming down for older children… 1. Ask yourself “How does my body feel?” 2. Try to calm down by: - taking three deep breaths (inhale through the nose, breathe deep down into the belly, and exhale through the nose); - counting backwards slowly; - think calming thoughts; - talk yourself through it (examples – I can do it, I can get through this, calming down will make me feel and think better). Some of the children I have worked with say they got so angry at times that they had to use all of the above strategies. Some said they had to count down from 100. Some said they went to their ‘happy place’ to think calming thoughts. Some said that three deep breaths was just not enough. I encourage the child to think about the incident later and ask herself – why was I angry, what did I do, what did and didn’t work, what could I have done differently. I also encourage the child to praise herself for the things she did well. When kids have big emotions, parents try to reason with them or lecture them. They ask them why they are like that, what happened, they tell them to calm down without guiding them through the calming down process. Neuroscience is showing us that when humans are in a heightened state emotionally, the logical and rational part of the brain shuts down. There is no point trying to reason with a child in the height of an emotion, it’s like trying to read Shakespeare to a dog – it doesn’t make any sense! They need to calm down first.

Fixing Chronic Lower Back Pain
With you Every Step of the Way
Most people have had lower back pain at some time. Often it disappears after mild anti inflammatory medication, rest, or massage, but sometimes it doesn’t. Chronic (long lasting) back pain at best can be annoying, at worst constant & debilitating. Often pain radiates into the buttock or legs (sciatica), sometimes with strange tingling or even loss of feeling down an affected leg. This type of chronic back problem can stop you working, playing , sleeping, eating, thinking, and leave you frustrated when you can’t resolve it. There are many initial causes of chronic back pain but (in most instances) one major factor sustains the cycle of pain. Here’s how it happens: Often after simple overuse or other injury the back muscles in the affected area shorten (lock in) and literally swell with toxin-filled fluids that have leaked from injured cells. This causes the muscles & nerves in the affected area to become inflamed and painful, the swelling reduces blood & lymph flow and this sustains the cycle of inflammation & pain. Exercise may relieve pain, but can sometimes also worsen the problem. In most instances the solution lies in: • Removing the inflammatory build-up in back muscles • Lengthening muscles This allows muscle function & spine position to normalise. In this way a technique such as ‘Muscle Elongation Therapy’ often relieves back pain completely, even in many long standing cases.

Swimming Lessons Can Save Lives No matter whether it’s fresh, salt or chlorinated water, each aquatic option presents a potential risk to a family’s wellbeing, if basic swimming skills and water safety practices aren’t taken seriously. “Learning, and knowing how to swim, is the most wonderful gift any parent can offer their child. Not only can these skills help save lives, it can holistically assist children with their overall development, said Keryn Daley, from Dive In Swim Academy, in Penrith. However, accidental childhood drowning claims the greatest number of young lives than any other tragedy. Between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014, 20 children between the ages of zero and four years, drowned in Australia; 70 per cent of these drowning deaths occurred in pools. Leading learn-to-swim authority, Swim Australia, suggest children as young as four months can start swimming lessons; enough time to allow a medical history to develop, the infant’s immune system to strengthen, and bonding to occur with the primary caretaker. “After four months, lessons in a gentle and developmentally appropriate program can, and should be started right away, said Swim Australia CEO, Ross Gage. By three years of age, children who have kept up their swimming lessons from a young age, should be able to perform certain life saving skills, such as:
• Returning to the wall if they should fall in, • Climbing out from a pool ledge, • Swimming up to five metres, • Kicking with a kick board,
• Using basic arm stroke movements; and • Possessing a general understanding of water safety rules, like – ‘never to go swimming without an adult’.
To ensure your child gains the best swim school experience possible, parents should consider the visual stimulus in and around the swim centre, staff approachability and connection with the children, and the applied swim program.

with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com This is a story with a very true message at its centre. ‘My wife and I attended a weekend course that was supposed to teach us skills to improve our marriage. My wife and I listened to the instructor declare, “It is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other….” He then addressed the men, “Can you name and describe your wife’s favourite flower?” I leaned over, touched my wife’s hand gently, and whispered, “Self-raising, isn’t it?” …and that was the start of my life as a single man. How well do you know the one you have chosen to spend your life with? They say love is not a big thing…. it is a thousand little things…like knowing your partners favourite flower!

How do we Define Wellness? It is much more than the absence of disease. Wellness is having energy to burn, a strong immune system, resilience, emotional and mental stability, clarity of mind, great looking skin, healthy BMI/body weight and resistance to chronic disease states such as diabetes, auto-immunity, arthritis, dementia, cancer etc. Wellness means we don’t have to rely on a cocktail of pharmaceutical medications to be able to function, to be without pain and inflammation. Wellness ensures we are inspired to move our bodies, to dance, to exercise and to participate in all life has to offer. How do we attain this state of equilibrium? Learning how to safeguard our precious health. Making right choices at the supermarket, mindful eating, practicing moderation when consuming foods and drinks that are not healthy. Learning to appreciate fresh whole natural real foods. Not desensitising our tastebuds with artificial flavours, salt, MSG and sugar. We can become well with the right advice and input. Sometimes certain conditions are greatly benefited by targeted therapeutic nutritional supplements and incremental dietary and lifestyle changes which make a world of difference. I would love to help you discover a healthier you. Wellness is possible and totally achievable. I welcome your enquiries. You can contact me on 0414 944 112 or email naturopath@ michellebeech.com.au

Pre Christmas Tips & Hints
The Perfect Christmas Pudding
Ingredients • 1 Tbsp Peanut Oil • 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce • 2 Tbsp Oyster Sauce • 1 Tsp Sesame Oil • 500g Chicken Mince • 3 Shallots, Thinly Sliced • 1 Tsp Finely Grated Ginger • 2 Cloves Garlic, Crushed • 4 Medium Button Mushrooms, Finely Chopped
• 220g Can Bamboo Shoots, Drained, Finely Chopped • 220g Can Water Chestnuts, Drained, Finely Chopped • 1/2 Cup (30g) Fried Noodles • 10 Small Iceberg Lettuce Leaves, Washed, Dried, Trimmed • 1 Tbsp Sesame Seeds • 2 Tbsp Crushed Peanuts
Method 1. Combine sesame oil, soy and oyster sauce in small jug or bowl. 2. Heat a wok over high heat until hot. Add peanut oil, then chicken. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes, breaking up mince, until the mince is just cooked through. 3. Reserve 1/3 of the shallots for garnish. Add remaining shallots, ginger, garlic, mushrooms, shoots and chestnuts to mince. Stir-fry for 2 minutes. 4. Add combined sesame oil sauce, stirring until heated through and sauce thickens slightly. Stir through noodles. 5. Divide mince mixture evenly among lettuce cups. Top with sesame seeds, nuts and reserved shallots.
1.
Use only quality local fruit and pre-soak for at least a week in Brandy or Rum. This will help to deliver rich flavour and remove sharpness of some of the citrus fruits used.
2.
The calico cloth used to dress the pudding needs to be large enough to be able to tie tightly together; you can always trim it after the pudding has been tied and about to go into the pot. Don’t be shy with the tie!
3.
To prevent this beautiful mixture from sticking to the calico, soak the cloth overnight and ensure the cloth is wet with a generous coating of flour before filling it.
4.
To avoid mould from growing, once the pudding is prepared, hang in a low-humidity, cool-dry area. The flavours will mature and form a rich, flavoursome pudding for the whole family to enjoy.
5.
A pudding is more than a decadent dessert- it’s a sweet time when the family comes together, tells stories.. and enjoys a sugar high. The pud is to be made with love, care and time.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson - Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au
Cash to Renovate If you’ve lived in your home for a few years, chances are that there are a few things that you’d like to improve around the place. Perhaps the Kitchen or Bathroom could do with an update. Maybe adding an extra Bedroom or a first floor extension. Or perhaps you want to build a Granny Flat to increase your Investment returns or for the In-Laws. Whatever it is that you want to do, the question is how do you pay for it all. The good news is that the Banks and Lenders are happy for you to borrow the funds you need to turn your home back into your dream home again, so lets look at your two main options to access the funds you need. The first and simplest way is to tap into the existing equity in your home. Simply put, equity is the difference between the value of your home and the amount that you owe to the bank. If there is sufficient equity to cover the cost of your renovations within the limits of your Banks lending policy then you can simply do an increase to your existing loan. If you’re looking at more extensive renovations or there is insufficient equity, then we can look at a Renovation Loan. The beauty of this loan is that the equity is calculated against the projected future value of your home once the renovations are complete rather than the current value. For our clients we always arrange for a free up front valuation of their home to help decide which strategy will work best for them. We also advise on whether it is best for our clients to stay with their current lender or to take the opportunity to switch. In some cases switching has meant that our clients have been able to do the renovations they want and at the same time reduce their repayments. So if you would like to freshen up your little piece of the great Aussie dream, what are you waiting for? Give us a call on 4733 8592 and we’ll get things started.

BUSINESS
Co-working Comes to Town In April this year The Creative Fringe, a long time dream of Glenmore Park resident, Debbie O’Connor opened its doors to creatives, freelancers, consultants and business owners with the aim of provide an inspiring, collaborate shared working environment for the talented people of Penrith. “Our aim is two fold. Firstly, we want to be a space that commuters can work in instead of travelling hours each day to and from work. Asking your employer if you can work from home might not be as effective as asking to work in a co-working space close to home. Leave home late and arrive home early is what we are challenging people to aim for. This not only changes how you work, but it give people more time for family, exercise and the fun things in life,” said Mrs O’Connor. “Our second focus is to provide a space where people who usually work alone can come and alleviate the isolation of a home or single office. There are no fit out costs or lease commitment, so it’s perfect for someone wanting to network and collaborate with other like minded people.” The concept is simple. You can hire a desk for the day, week or month. There are flexi packs of 5 or 10 visits that can be used anytime in a calendar month. Simply bring in your laptop, plug into their WiFi and you’re in business. They have meeting rooms, breakout areas and tea and coffee facilities that are all part of the experience – not to mention the fantastic community that you can become a part of. For more information about The Creative Fringe go to www.thecreativefringe.com.au or follow them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram - and don’t forget to #celebrateyourdifference.

Not Reaching Your Weight Loss Goals? While some people lose weight quickly and consistently, it might take a bit longer for others to start seeing any changes on the scales. This can be frustrating, especially when you think you are putting in the effort and doing everything right. There could be a number of reasons why the scales aren’t moving, such as: • You are underestimating the amount you eat - Try weighing and tracking your meals for the next two weeks to make sure your portion sizes are not too generous. • You are not eating enough - If you’re not eating enough, your body can think that it’s starving and hold on to the fat. Make sure you are eating an adequate combination of the right foods to fuel your body. • You are not getting enough sleep - If your body is not provided with plenty of sleep, your progress may be limited. Sleep helps to regenerate your body, allows damaged muscles and tissues to be repaired and helps our bodies to burn fat. • Your body has adapted to your workout routine - If you’ve been doing the same exercise since you started, you may need to change it up and throw some variation into your exercise schedule to help stimulate progress. • You may be gaining muscle - Although you may losing body fat, your body is also gaining muscle at the same time. Try measuring your progress in different ways, such as weekly progress photo’s, taking notice of how your clothes now fit or taking your measurements instead. Just remember, eating right and exercising regularly improves your health enormously, regardless of the number on the scales. Happy Training! Rj
