Local Rower’s Olympic Dream Local rower Victoria Trevitt may only be 14, but she already has her sights set firmly on one day representing Australia in the Olympic Games. Victoria has only been competing for a year and a half, but has already achieved an impressive resume of wins and awards. Her most coveted award was the Walker and Hall Chalice, a Handicap Open Age Men and Women’s event that dates back to 1924. Victoria defied the odds by making the final in a three way tie, resulting in a big win nine seconds clear of second place. On the back of this victory was the JB Sharp Regatta she recently competed in at Iron Cove in Sydney. Victoria was successful at the Regatta and was undefeated in the Under 16 Single Scull Women’s event. She was the major contributor for points in the Men’s and Women’s Under 16 Single Scull which enabled the Nepean Rowing Club to win the Combined $500 LEA Award. Add to this the BMG Aviation Scholarship and it’s clear to see that Victoria’s dedication to the sport is of the highest level. “I train nine times a week. I have four morning sessions and five afternoon sessions. During the rowing season, I am up most mornings at 4:30am to go to training, then attend school and then go back to training in the afternoons. Training does continue in the off season, but I can sleep in until about 5:30am” she said. Victoria’s hero is Kim Brennan (Crowe), a single sculler athlete on the ART (Australian Rowing Team), who is representing Australia at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. She hopes to one day emulate her idol and make the Australian Olympic Team. “My long term goals are to train as hard as I can and make it in the Australian Olympic Team. Once I’m there, I’ll be going for gold!” Victoria replied. Victoria Trevitt showcasing her awards | Amanda Trevitt

New Release Of Larger Elevated Homesites With Views At Prestige Mulgoa Rise
Mulpha Norwest recently released a number of stunning elevated homesites with reserve and mountain views at Mulgoa Rise, Western Sydney’s premier residential community. Seven sites remain, all larger 750m2+, with a range of frontages from 22m, and many with stunning views to the nearby Blue Mountains. The release of these traditional homesites provides purchasers with the opportunity to build the home of their dreams. These homesites are just one of the many housing options available at Mulgoa Rise, the only estate in Western Sydney to offer such a broad mix of housing choice. The estate offers elevated entry-level home sites, many with mountain views; affordable designer 4-bedroom low maintenance townhomes; and premium 4-bedroom designer townhomes set around a park side pool and gazebo. Additionally a range of house & land packages is also available. Daniel and Jessica Denver are a young, newly married couple who purchased a block of land in the early stages of the estate and have built their dream home. Daniel said he felt Mulgoa Rise was a step up from some of
the other estates they had looked at in the Penrith area. “All the homes being built are quality, prestige homes and we were able to choose a block of land directly opposite a park, with only a few homes in the street,â€? Daniel said. “There are also plans underway to build a public school close by, as well as a small shopping centre.â€? The other big plus for the Denvers was the estate’s proximity to the M4. “We both commute to work, me to the city and Jess to Parramatta, so the estate’s proximity to the M4 was very appealing.â€? The community facilities at Mulgoa Rise include sporting fields, playgrounds, picnic areas, cycleway and walkway network connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve, local bushland corridors and Glenmore Park fitness trail. Mulgoa Rise is just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10 minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza, with its abundance of restaurants, cafĂŠs, shopping and entertainment. The nearest train station, with direct links to the city, is a short 10 minute drive away. There is also a good selection of kindergartens, preschools and childcare centres, as well as public and private schools located nearby. Mulgoa Rise is being developed by Mulpha Norwest, developers of the international award-winning Norwest Business Park; the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate; Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast; Hayman Island and the Intercontinental Hotel. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
Is Your God too Small? Some years ago, J.B. Phillips wrote a book “Your God is too small.” In the book, Phillips made the point that many people have an unreal idea of God. They have a picture of God that limits Him and makes Him far too small. For example, some people think of God as a police officer waiting around the corner ready to take their picture and bust them for doing the wrong thing. Others think of God as an emergency cord God: you pull the emergency cord and hopefully God will help you in your trouble. Still others think of God as having made the world but now has gone off on holidays, and has too many other things to think about, rather than be interested in our lives. How should we understand God? How is God shown to us in the Bible? One of the great Bible verses gives us a fantastic summary about God, who he is and what he has done. John chapter 3 verse 16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Far from being a God who is only interested in our life when we have an emergency, or a God who is too busy, the Bible tells us that God is much bigger; God loves people and wants all people to enjoy friendship and eternal life, heaven, with him.
We see the proof in Jesus coming into our world to die on the cross, and his resurrection 3 days later. Don’t make your God too small. Put your faith and trust in the true God, the real God, who calls us to enjoy friendship with him. At our Sunday services at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we are committed to doing this, all in the context of helping people know the real life found in Jesus. Do you want to know more? Give me a call on 4733 1635, or just turn up on Sunday – we would love to meet you! . Rev John Lavender

A Night For The Fuller’s Chris Fuller is a friend, father, husband, son, brother and most importantly just a genuine man with a big heart. Unfortunately, Chris and his family have fallen on hard times and they need our support. Recently, Chris, his beautiful wife Sharon and their two young daughters got the devastating news that Chris was unwell. Chris was diagnosed with brain cancer and after undergoing two surgeries, along with chemo and radiation therapies, the cancer has returned and time is of the essence. The Fuller family have always given back to the community through touch football, cricket, soccer, being involved in the girl’s school and their jobs. Chris loved the fact he could contribute to the community by working as a NSW Firefighter and Corrective Services Officer, so now they need the community to give back to them. “I have watched Chris fight this with a strength I didn’t know he had. I felt more and more amazed by him every day, especially when going through his own fight he was a solid rock for his wife Sharon during her mum’s cancer battle, which she sadly lost earlier this year. Chris is a man who has always given back to his community and I’m hoping that now the community will join us in giving back to him” said long term friend Michael Beech. A fundraising night, ‘A Night For The Fuller’s’, has been organised for the family next month. The event will be held on Friday, 7th October at St Marys Rugby League Club. The cost is $100 per ticket, which includes a two course meal. There will be 10 people per table, with a maximum of 36 tables. The night promises to be big, with entertainment, raffles, auctions, table games, prizes and an MC/DJ. The Function Room has also been kindly donated by St Marys Rugby League Club. A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help the family as well and donations can be left at https://www.gofundme.com/2j5xq8s. Soul Matters: Being without a Gold Medal
“enough”
In the movie Cool Runnings, the coach of the Jamaican bobsled team says to them: “A gold medal is a wonderful thing, but if you are not enough without it, you will never be enough with it.” By “enough” the coach meant that we are at peace, at rest and happy within our skin. He understood that such contentment and well-being would not be found by an external achievement, whether a gold medal or other similar things such as a promotion, being a millionaire, marrying the person of our dreams, or having our kids top the class. Now to think these things in-and-of-themselves are bad or won’t fulfil us in some ways, is crazy! But the point is that they won’t make us happy in a deep and lasting way unless we are “enough” without them. In other words, if all is not well in our soul, no matter what happens externally we will struggle to thrive. Think about the person who marries the love of their life but struggles to express love to her, or excels at something but finds it is never “enough” because whatever was in their souls driving them towards their “gold medal” is still not dealt with. My point is that we are “enough” because of what is happening at a deeper, spiritual place in us where love registers, and we get a sense of the sacredness, beauty and value of our lives apart from the adulation of others. In the Bible Jesus taught that He would show us the truth that will heal us inwardly and set us free. Only then can we be “enough” without a “gold medal” and live well. Ironically, being “enough” without a gold medal is what blesses athletes with the inner peace and focus to be able to perform well and win one! If you aren’t “enough” without a gold medal and desire greater peace, consider enquiring about our Healing House by emailing me at: paul@fvc.org.au. Go well, Paul

New Era For Settlers Mulgoa
Exciting times are ahead for Settlers Mulgoa, with new local owners Sophie and Craig Mason taking ownership of the historic building earlier this year. The Mason family are currently hard at work restoring the building, gardens and fit out and hope to be opened to the public in November/December this year. Settlers Mulgoa will run as a licensed cafe Monday to Sunday 7.00am-4.30pm and an event/function centre on the occasional Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Settlers Mulgoa will be a place for everyone to enjoy coffee, fresh but simple home style rustic cooking or a nice glass of wine or a beer with family and friends. All set in a warm country rustic setting, it will be the perfect place to come together and enjoy. “We have lived in the local area for the last 20 years. We love Mulgoa. The open spaces, the friendly family feel, it’s a fantastic place to raise a family with only being an hour from the Sydney CBD” said Sophie Mason. For the last 13 years, they have run a very large family business
called Doug Up On Bourke in Waterloo, restoring and selling rustic antiques and hard core collectables to the Sydney market. At the end of last year, they decided it was time to move on and work closer to home and spend more time with their family. “We are planning on restoring the building over a period of time, to bring it back to what it once was, the original Mulgoa Police Station. The Police station ran from the early 1900’s until it closed in 1934. The building was then used as a museum and tea rooms. After remaining vacant for a period of time, it opened in 1971 as a restaurant, given the name Settlers and soon after that became the Wedding reception venue it was known for today” explained Sophie. Settlers Mulgoa is located at 1300 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa. For more information, search ‘Settlers Mulgoa’ for their Facebook page. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… Parents sometimes fall into the trap of threatening children, giving up, or being inconsistent in their approach to child behaviour. Here are some more parent traps… • Discipline that is threatened but the parent does not follow through. When a parent does not follow through with a consequence, children learn that the parent doesn’t mean what s/he says. Some children can interpret a threat as a dare. The biggest threat I hear most often from parents is the one that starts about six weeks before Christmas – “if you are not good, Santa won’t bring you any presents”. This type of threat is ineffective because it is too far in the future. It sounds like a desperate attempt by the parent to control the child’s behaviour, and does not give the child immediate feedback on his/her behaviour. • Parents allow children to get away with the behaviour, until the parent becomes angry. When you are angry you are at risk of losing control and hurting your child. • Parents are inconsistent. One day we will follow through, the next day we let it go, and the next day we give up. Children need consistency, otherwise they do not know what is expected of them. • Parents aren’t working as a team. One parent may be permissive, the other parent may be too harsh. The parents may argue about their differences of opinion in front of the children. The best type of parenting for children has a high amount of warmth and care, and realistic expectations. Parents need to respond to their child’s behaviour in an immediate, consistent, and decisive manner. Children learn new skills and behaviours through being reminded and corrected on a daily basis. Consequences should be related to the child’s mistaken behaviour, and should not threaten a child’s sense of worth or self-esteem. Consequences also need to be able to be followed through, and issued when the behaviour is occurring.

Talented Regentville Students Host Art Show Like No Other! Regentville Public School was turned into an art gallery last month, with the school hosting their own Art Show, as part of Education Week. The event involved students from Kindergarten to Year 6 showcasing their own artworks to family and friends, covering such themes as Abstract, Creatures of the Deep, In the Garden, Artist Studies, Colour, Masks and Photography. The Art Show was the brainchild of Regentville Public School Teacher Brearn Hahn, who worked tirelessly to bring the event to life. “The Art Show was a vision that was one year in the making. The teachers and children have done a fantastic job. I could not be any prouder” said Brearn. Visitors to the Art Show were treated to a fantastic display of colourful artworks from the many talented artists at the school, which included everything from glow in the dark 3D sea creatures, Picasso inspired self-portraits to landscape photography. The Art Show was opened by guest of honour Lisa Van Den Dolder, Operation Art Project Officer. “It is amazing to see the world through the children’s eyes. It makes us think about things that are important to the children. I have been blown away by the amount of talented artists at the school who have displayed their work. This event is quite unique and I’m proud of the children” explained Lisa. The success of the Art Show means that it could become an annual event on the school’s calendar. “This is a celebration of the arts. It’s wonderful to see the amount of creativity and diversity amongst the students. Everyone at the school, from teachers to students has enjoyed this whole experience. There has also been a fantastic response from family and friends in the community” TOP: Students, Flynn, Kaan, Cody and Kayra enjoying the Art Show BOTTOM: Amazing works of art on display | Images Supplied

Stop and Smell the Roses It’s no secret that in today’s society, we are driven by more technology and time poor lifestyles and less time outdoors breathing in fresh air. The latest Pokémon craze is evident of this. Instead of people releasing stress by taking a walk outside, we instead pick up our phones and scroll through our social media accounts, which is why National Tree Day is more important than ever for us and our children. Nature has been shown to reduce stress, with just 10 minutes spent outside in a natural environment resulting in a significant reduction in blood pressure and an improvement in mental health and wellbeing. Planet Ark’s latest research shows that spending time in nature has medically and scientifically beneficial effects that enable people to grow healthier, happier, brighter, calmer and closer , and there’s no better way to embrace these benefits than by taking part in Planet Ark’s iconic twenty-one year environmental campaign The yearly event hosted through Plant Ark took place right across the county last month and in particular in many of our schools. Not only a great initiative to get kid’s outside for all the right reasons, but an educational learning experience about nature and the fulfilling opportunity to do something good for the environment. With the generous contribution of around 20 plants from Bunnings on Mulgoa Rd in Penrith Year 5 and 6 students from Glenmore Park Public School took part in planting and
completing an ongoing planting project which begun three years ago, greening a section of the school. “National Tree Day is part of our school’s ongoing commitment to environmental education of our students” explains Peter Corry, Assistant Principal at Glenmore Park Public School. Remember, with Spring fast approaching, you don’t have to wait till next year to participate in tree planting, make a start now, visit your nearest nursery and pick up some plants with the kids and start enjoying nature together, smell the roses, breath the fresh air and put technology on hold even if only for a short while.

THE BUSINESS BUILDER
Article Written + Submitted by: Zoltan Szentirmay Founder of CFO@CALL | Author of “WHY BUSINESSES STOP GROWING and What You can do About it” P: 1300 854 480 E: admin@cfoatcall.com.au W: cfoatcall.com.au
Understand Your Financial Numbers – What do They Mean? Last month I touched on the importance of the Balance Sheet in interpreting and understanding your businesses financial position. I covered the concept of the Working Capital Ratio which assessed the businesses ability to meet its Current Liabilities from Current Assets over a 12 month period. You will recall it is calculated by dividing the Current Assets by your Current Liabilities. In this issue I take understanding cash position and debt a little bit further. Is there a calculation that provides my cash position over a shorter time frame, let’s say three months? Yes there is. It’s a calculation that measures the businesses short term liquidity. It measures the businesses ability to use its quick assets, its cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities and accounts receivable to pay its current liabilities. These are the Current Assets that can be converted into cash within 90 days. It’s known as the Quick or Acid Test Ratio where (cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities and accounts receivable) are divided by Current Liabilities. Higher quick ratios are more favourable for your business because it shows there are more quick assets than current liabilities. Thus, a quick ratio of 1.5 means that a company has $1.50 of liquid assets available to cover each $1 of current liabilities. This also shows that the business could pay off its current liabilities without selling any long-term assets. So is there a calculation that tells me my ability to repay debt?
Yes there is. It’s referred to as the Times Interest Earned or Interest Coverage Ratio and is considered one of the solvency indicators. What you are trying to work out with this calculation is the extent to which earnings are available to meet the interest payments. In this instance we will use the Profit and Loss Statement to calculate this ratio. We need to determine what the interest charge is and divide it by what is referred to as EBIT or Earnings Before Interest & Taxes. If your Profit and Loss Report does not spell it out don’t despair, it’s easily calculated by taking Revenue, deducting Operating Expenses excluding Interest and adding Non-Operating Income. This ratio indicates how many times a company could pay the interest with its before tax income, so obviously the larger ratios are considered more favourable than smaller ratios. In other words, a ratio of 4 means that a company makes enough income to pay for its total interest expense 4 times over. Said another way, this company’s income is 4 times higher than its interest expense for the year. Since these interest payments are usually made on a long term basis they are treated as ongoing fixed expenses. As with most fixed expenses if the company cannot make the payments, it could go bankrupt or cease to exist. Thus this ratio could be considered a solvency ratio, and an important one to remember for anyone with a business debt. In the next issue I’ll talk more about your cash position and how it relates to the Profits & Loss Statement.

Community Welcomes Shared Pathways Safety Action Plan Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies MP has met with Glenmore Park residents Mr John Williams and Mr Ken Innes to discuss the importance of pedestrian safety on shared pathways. Mr Williams said that “It is important to ensure that people are courteous when sharing pathways, and to remain considerate for the safety of both cyclists and pedestrians.” Pedestrian safety is a priority for the NSW Government. The NSW Pedestrian Safety Action Plan 2014-2016 sets out current policy and research directions, particularly in relation to shared paths and shared zones. “In the 2015-2016 Budget, the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight announced a historic $7.5 billion package, which included $57 million for cycling and pedestrian infrastructure,” said Tanya Davies MP. The NSW Government is strongly committed to improving road safety for the NSW Community, and to avoid collisions on shared paths, the NSW Road Rules 2014 require cyclists to keep to the left and give way to pedestrians. The Hon Duncan Gay MLC, Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight has recently announced the ‘Go Together’ campaign to ensure that pedestrians and cyclists can safely share pathways. Think Spring – Think Leura! Gardeners looking for inspiration for their own plots, or just wanting to experience the beauty of Spring in the Upper Blue Mountains, will again be flocking to the annual Leura Gardens Festival in October. The 2016 festival will have 13 magical gardens on show, including three new to the festival and several returning after a break. This year’s festival, the 52nd, will take place from Saturday, October 1 to Sunday, October 9, and will have several features which should make it even more appealing than usual. Firstly, although the main festival features three more gardens than last year, the price remains the same at $25 per person for an all-gardens ticket or $5 per person per individual garden. Secondly, the special pre-festival tours, for groups of 10+ people, will provide a private, escorted tour of four very special gardens, some of which will only be open in this pre-festival week, all for the cost of only $20 per person. These tours will be available in the week prior to the main festival, from Monday, September 26 to Friday, September 30. Thirdly, holders of the $25 all-gardens ticket will have unlimited access to the Music in the Gardens performances held every afternoon. Several new acts will be appearing as well favourites such as the Penrith City Big Band, and the Blue Mountains Ukelele Group. Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the plant sales centre which will this year feature plants from four new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools. Festival proceeds go to the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital. More details of this not-to-be missed event for garden lovers are available at www.leuragardensfestival.com. au or on 0431 095 279.

HEALTH MATTERS

A Missing Link In Osteoporosis – Vitamin K Most people today don’t get enough vitamin K, yet this vitamin is vital for our bones. So what do we know about Vitamin K & why is it so important to bone health? We know: 1. people with low bone density or osteoporosis, or who suffer hip or vertebral fractures have much lower blood Vitamin K levels. 2. intervention studies show that vitamin K (especially with vitamin D) can increase bone density in osteoporotic people and reduce fracture rates 3. corticosteroid use reduces bone density in adults. Vitamin K can reduce such steroid-induced bone loss 4. warfarin (blood thinner) stops vitamin K working & reduces bone density. The longer one takes warfarin the greater the bone loss 5. vitamin K2 ‘directs calcium to your skeleton, while preventing it from being deposited in your organs, joint spaces, and arteries. Arterial plaque consists of calcium deposits (atherosclerosis), hence the term ‘hardening of the arteries’ So how does vitamin K work? Vitamin K helps bone cells make protein called osteocalcin. This protein binds calcium tightly, keeping it in the bone, ensuring good bone strength & density. People with low vitamin K levels still make the protein, but it can’t hold calcium, which drifts out of bone, and bones weaken. Where do we get vitamin K from? The highest levels of Vitamin K of any know food is Japanese natto - fermented soy beans. Next highest are green leafy vegetables - collard & salad greens, silverbeet, spinach etc. Cheeses (especially blue cheese), liver and some vegetable oils also contain significant amounts. So why aren’t we getting enough, where do we get it? The simple reason - our modern diet just doesn’t contain enough vitamin K. Most Australians eat little fermented food, they typically don’t eat Natto for breakfast! Before you say ‘but I eat salad greens’ you should know that although salad greens are high in vitamin K, only 4-13% of the vitamin is absorbed by the body from these foods as it is trapped in plants cell fibre. So you need to eat a huge amount of leaves to get a good dose. Is it best to take a tablet or eat right? It depends on what you eat & how you eat it! Ideally Vitamin K should come from the diet. A properly constructed diet contains, high vitamin K & D, calcium, protein & antioxidants, etc., all of which are important for building & maintaining strong bones at any age. Green juices are a great source of absorbable vitamin K, as is Natto. So
updating our tastes & getting into these foods may be a good idea. If you can’t, taking high dose supplemental vitamin K may be (an expensive) option.

RSPCA Cupcake Week 2016 A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted not just a Cupcake Day, but a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in August. Leo had an extra Pupcake for his First Birthday! Happy Birthday Leo! Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Kirsti, Kristie, Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Lizzie, and Jessica cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious slices, cupcakes and of course Pupcakes. Pony loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work.
