Egg-citing Easter Festivities
The children of Glenmore Park were treated to an Easter Egg Hunt and a surprise visit from the Easter F u o t f Bunny at the Glenmore Park i L r Child and Family Centre on Colou de! insi Easter Saturday. The Easter festivities were a huge success, with lots of children and their families enjoying the sunshine and all that the park has to offer. The fabulous ‘Easter Spectacular’ was seamlessly coordinated by Sapphire’s Café, where tickets were pre-purchased and included face painting, balloons and a delicious lunch for all the kids along with the superbly coordinated Easter egg hunt! The smiles on the faces of the children were priceless as they ran around collecting as many Easter eggs as they could possibly squeeze into their bags, screams of delight and shrills of excitement filled the air! “We were very pleased with the success of the event, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the children’s faces light up with sheer delight when the Easter Bunny arrived,” said Sapphire’s Café owners Jenna & Tarryn. Little Red Attracts Big Crowds Families flocked to Mamre House in the January school holidays to witness the ridiculous antics of Little Red Riding Hood, her brother Blue, Granny and of course Wolfgang the Wolf. This wacky version of the children’s classic tale was written by Glenmore Park resident Gabrielle DeCelis. One patron said “the wit and pace of the script was simply brilliant and a joy to watch” and, “Little Red Riding Hood certainly eclipsed the character and quirk you would find in any big smoke production”. Audience members certainly enjoyed the fact that this original, locally produced show entertained on many different levels; the kids loved the crazy slapstick and the grown-ups appreciated the topical and sometimes satirical humour. If you missed the January season of Little Red Riding Hood at Mamre House don’t despair. You can catch all the zany fun at the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge during the April school holidays! This is a wonderful opportunity for children to experience live, interactive theatre in the lovely gardens of the Norman Lindsay Gallery. Families are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch to “wolf” down after the show. 25 – 28 April, 2013 Thursday 1pm only, Friday - Sunday 10.30am & 1pm Tickets: $12 - Group of 6 only $60 – Kids under 2 years free. Bookings: 4751 1067 Norman Lindsay Gallery, 14 Norman Lindsay Crescent, Faulconbridge For more info visit: www.actingfactory.com

Parenting is one of the greatest responsibilities we can have. Bringing up and caring for children is a vital role in life. The input that we give our children is of enormous significance. There are few things greater than seeing our children grow and mature and find their place in the world. Yet, at the same time, parenting can be an enormously complex and tricky responsibility. Children don’t come with their own instruction manual and just working out what to do and when to do it can leave us feeling very uncertain. One of the great things about the Bible is how much good stuff it has to say to us about being a parent. In the New Testament gospel of Luke, we read how Jesus “grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and men.” This sets out the key areas of a child’s life that need nurturing – what God wants us to aim for as parents – for our children to grow mentally, physically, spiritually and socially. One of the things we really want to do at Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC) is equip parents to help them grow their children in this direction. Beginning on Wednesday 8th May at 9.30am (with creche) for Mums is our excellent 6 week “Real Life Parenting” course. It will help you tackle these issues as well as help you think through positive discipline, communication, developing healthy self-esteem & resilience, handling conflict, developing godly characteristics in your child, even making parenting more enjoyable!
‘An absolutely fantastic Course!’ (Paul & Kate)...’Loved it! Very professional, personal and practical. The strategies in the Course really work’ (Jenny)...’ Very clear, practical advice that works’ (Simon & Julia)...’Results showed almost instantly’ (Kerrie)...’Related very well to real life. It made a lot of sense and has made a big difference’ (Melissa) It is not to be missed! You can book in by calling the Church Office on the number below. At GPAC, we also want to celebrate the great work that Mums do so it would be great if you are able to join us on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12th at our 4 Sunday Services. Please also join us on Sunday May 5th for our special Birthday Celebrations at 9.30am & 6pm. This will be a great day with BBQ’s, Kindy Animal Farm, Face Painting, Jumping Castle & a whole lot more! We’d love to have you along! Rev John Lavender

Gardening – When Size Matters Most of us think of our garden as a sanctuary from the stresses of daily life, a place to relax and admire. Patches of ground are highly priced and space should be used wisely. In the plant world there are now so many options available for even the smallest of gardens. Walls are an ideal way to show off plants espaliered or colourful climbing plants. New varieties of dwarf citrus trees and fruit trees are perfect in large containers. The beauty of these edible favourites is they only grow half of the standard tree yet still produce full sized fruit. Or if you’re looking for a hedge with an edge why not try the min-a-min dwarf murraya, a classic popular highly fragrant plant with glossy green foliage. These plants and many more are available at Glenmore Garden Plus -757 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa Happy Gardening- Lee-Anne

PADRE PIO PARISH UPDATE
Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park • Phone: 4737 9735
From Death to Life – The Joy of Easter! As I write this column I am a nervous man – Holy Week is about to begin and the ceremonies that lead up to the highlight of the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday, are being organised by a vast range of parishioners, each playing a vital role to ensure that everyone knows what to do so that the ceremonies are beautiful, prayerful, reverent and meaningful. A great deal of detailed work goes into preparing the Holy Thursday, Good Friday, the Great Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday celebrations so you can perhaps understand my nervousness as the one who leads these ceremonies because I have to make certain that I know what I’m doing! Leading the celebrations is a great privilege and responsibility and any uncertainty or false moves on my part especially can severely lessen the impact of what is the supreme act of Christian worship. But underlying this nervousness and apprehension is excitement. As I said earlier, Easter is the climax of the Christian year because it is a celebration of our redemption. Christ’s sacrificial act means that we need not know permanent death. Just as Christ was resurrected from death on that first Easter Sunday after his crucifixion on Good Friday, so we too can share in his Resurrection. This is the source of excitement that I and all Christians feel at this time of year. Easter is celebrated in memory of what Christ did for us on Calvary in triumphing over death. It marks a turning point in human history and as Christians we seek to live our lives in constant gratitude for Christ’s saving act. Just as we respond favourably to acts of kindness and love in others,
so we do the same for Jesus. God doesn’t need our gratitude or love or anything else from us yet we cannot help but show our gratefulness to God through the acts of love we show other people. When we do this we are making the one who sacrificed himself for us manifest to them and hoping and praying that they too will come to know and have true intimacy with Jesus. Such acts of love mark us as an Easter people; a source not of pride, arrogance or smugness but of humility. Though I am writing this column just prior to Easter you are reading it after Easter Sunday but still within the Easter season. Because Easter is such an important feast for Christians it extends for fifty days through to the feast of Pentecost when we recall the Holy Spirit being sent upon the world after Jesus returned to heaven. I trust that you had the opportunity to connect in some meaningful way with God over Easter and that this has increased your desire to show the face of Christ to others via your words and actions not just in this wonderful Easter season but each and every day of the year. Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling

Glenmore Park Residents Group NEWS Glenmore Park Residents Group have confirmed that Penrith City Mayor, Mark Davies will attend the next meeting of the group on Tuesday 16th April at 7pm at Floribunda Community Centre, Floribunda Ave, Glenmore Park. We urge residents to come along to hear what the mayor has to say and to pose some relevant questions. Hopefully residents will get some positive feedback on issues that have been concerning them. Also good news! Our facebook page is up and running. On your facebook page type in Glenmore Park Residents Group and click on “like”. Andrew Toirkens has highlighted the page with a great photo and we welcome your questions and feedback. The group had a small win after February’s meeting. A reminder email was sent to council regarding the ever increasing dip in the road at Prunus St and which we were told would be fixed by the end of December 2012. The reminder got the results albeit, two months late but it is now done. Likewise the clearing of algae in Cheds Town Dam. These are small steps and with your assistance we can keep Glenmore Park the picturesque suburb we live in.

News from Regentville Public School It has been a great start to 2013 for Regentville Public School. This year we welcomed 108 new Kindergarten students making the number of students at the school 665, the largest public school in Penrith Valley. The historic old schoolhouse that sits at the front of the school, is currently being painted and by the end of the term it should be looking sensational. Regentville was once again the district champion school which makes it nine consecutive years. Our students have performed extremely well dominating the event with three champions and four district records broken. The swimmers went onto the Sydney West Swimming Carnival with ten students advancing through to the State Carnival held later this term.
The P&C and parent body continue their fantastic support with every classroom now having an interactive whiteboard and the library having been refurbished and painted. The staff are busy preparing for the new English syllabus that will be implemented in all schools in 2014. They are leading the way working closely with neighbouring schools to provide professional learning opportunities and collegial networks. The school is also part of the Connected Communities 21 (CC21) research project run by Macquarie ICT Innovations Centre. This project is investigating how our school is utilising Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to introduce and implement the new English syllabus. Exciting times for all at Regentville Public School.

Mother’s Day Grievances As we celebrate Mother’s Day it is sobering to remember that not all sons and daughters have had a nurturing positive experience from their mothers. As a consequence Mother’s Day is tinged with ambiguity, anger and unresolved emotions for what you didn’t or couldn’t receive from your mother. It can be very hard when the people we need love from the most can’t give it to us. We can spend our life hoping to get more from our mum than she is able to provide. When the people who
were supposed to give us love can’t — or won’t — we need to be able to get it from others. My encouragement is to grieve what we couldn’t get – and never can get from our mother. It is only when we can adequately grieve our childhood needs that we can start to find the love we need from other sources. We can begin to turn our attention to growing the relationships with other family members and others outside our family who care for us. As we let go of what our mother in their own limitations can’t give - it allows us to use our energy to develop friendships and supportive relationships with others.
Youth Week 2013 Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres encourages all young people in the Penrith area to join the celebrations during Youth Week 2013. The NSW Government has given a quarter-of-a-milliondollar boost to local councils across the State as they gear up to celebrate Youth Week 2013 in April. Through Youth Week, the NSW Government wants to encourage young people aged 12 to 25 years to play a greater role in their communities and to encourage people from different backgrounds to come together and get involved. Whether it’s organising music concerts and film festivals, or participating in leadership workshops and sport competitions, we want all young people in NSW to take part. “Activities such as these, organised with the help of local councils, not only encourage disengaged youth to get involved, but assist all young people to develop skills that they may utilise later in life.” Mr Ayres said. This year Youth Week will run from 5 to 14 April with the theme ‘Be Active. Be Happy. Be You’. Events to be held in the Penrith area include: Penrith PCYC Time4Kids; Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services - Be Active Be You; ImagineNations Youth: The Young and Bold Festival ; The Mondo M Factor; Valley Youth Festival. Detailed information on Youth Week in NSW is available on the website www.youthweek.nsw.gov.au

According to FKP’s Executive General Manager of Developments in NSW and Victoria, Evian Delfabbro, this, together with walkways connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve, is expected to appeal to families looking to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. “Mulgoa Rise will appeal to families looking to build a quality, prestige home in a family-friendly community that offers a contemporary country village lifestyle with all the convenience of nearby town amenities,” Ms Delfabbro said. Mulpha FKP has a strong history of developing award-winning residential and commercial developments, including Norwest Business Park and the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate in Baulkham Hills. PAWS A WHILE
with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital
Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check by Camille and Erin. They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. If you can tolerate Pony, you can tolerate any dog! The 4 kittens are from the same litter and are 10 weeks of age. Katie is a tortoiseshell female. Kevin is a white and ginger male. Kobie is a ginger male. Kyle is a ginger and white male. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a
balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. New Nursing Staff We are growing! We employed 2 new veterinary nurses in November 2012, and have just employed another qualified nurse. Liz is joining our team with 5 years of veterinary nursing experience. Liz is a qualified veterinary nurse and pet stylist. Her qualification is Pro Groomer Level 1 and 2, and she was trained by a master groomer. Liz has many pets, including: Syber the Siberian husky, who is very boisterous; Tiffany the Australian bulldog, who is a tank; Sefton the Beagalier, who just started puppy preschool here; Satchmo the smoodle, who is a typical neurotic poodle; and Abbey the cat, who is just a normal cat. Liz is an avid horse rider, who competes at the National level in dressage. Give us a call on 4736 2027. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au

THIS SPORTING LIFE Triple Treat Four local Year 2 students from Penrith Anglican College, Lachlan Azzopardi from Orchard Hills and Glenmore Park triplets Carina, Nina and Ella Cortese were among 17 youngsters from the Jamisontown Giants Football Club who participated in a half-time exhibition game last weekend. The event took place at Parramatta Stadium during the A-League football match between the Western Sydney Wanderers and the Wellington Phoenix in front of a large crowd of 15,400 vocal fans. This was a momentous day for Lachlan, as he not only celebrated his very first game of football but he topped it off with a great goal, and all on his 8th birthday. What a wonderful triple treat for Lachlan! Meanwhile, Nina (2nd from the right) added a steely goal herself in the dying minutes to add to the Club’s goal fest tally. Carina (1st from the left) said “Wow, there’s so many people watching us play, and they cheered when we scored. That was great”. The girls are the first set of triplets to join the Jamisontown Giants. The Club’s new President, Paul Whittaker, said “Our Club is very focussed on encouraging and promoting the sport of football to our young boys and girls. I am so happy that we had this opportunity to participate in this well organised event. All the children and their parents had a wonderful time and I’d like to thank the staff at the Nepean District Soccer Football Association for making this special event possible for us all.”

Panthers Set for Big Season
The Penrith Basketball Association launched its campaign in the 2013 Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition on 16th March, hosting the Newcastle Hunters at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre, Cambridge Park. Three Glenmore Park residents are in the respective Penrith teams, including Tahlia Tupaea in the Women’s team and veteran Josh Morehead and Nick Kennedy in the Men’s team. The Penrith Men’s team lost three senior players from 2012 but their replacements have already made their mark, with the Panthers convincingly winning each of their three pre-season games against the Hawkesbury Jets State League teams and the NSW Under 18 Men’s team. Morehead and Kennedy are both seasoned players and will play key roles for the Panthers in 2013. Penrith will host twelve home games this season.

Take Control Of Your Environment!
If you were to take a look at all the healthy people in the world, you may notice that they usually have certain characteristics and lifestyle behaviours in common. WHAT’S COOKING? After overindulging in Easter treats, here are a couple of fresh autumn temptations for you to try.
Roasted Autumn Vegetable Salad Ingredients • Serves 4 60ml (1/4 cup) olive oil 3 tsp ground cumin 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1/2 (800g) butternut or jap pumpkin, seeded, cut into 8 wedges 4 bulbs baby fennel, trimmed, cut into wedges 2 red onions, cut into wedges 100g soft goat’s cheese, crumbled 3 vine-ripened tomatoes, cut into wedges 60g rocket 50g (1/3 cup) pine nuts, toasted Lemon & paprika dressing 1 lemon, zested, juiced 2 tsp caster sugar 2 tsp sweet paprika 2 cloves garlic, crushed 80ml (1/3 cup) extra virgin olive oil Method 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Place oil, cumin, garlic, pumpkin, fennel and onions in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper, and toss to combine. 2. Transfer pumpkin to a large roasting pan and roast, turning occasionally, for 15 minutes. Add fennel and onions, and roast, turning occasionally, for a further 25 minutes or until all vegetables are tender. Remove pan from oven and cool for 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, to make dressing, whisk all ingredients in a bowl, then season. 4. Place vegetables, goat’s cheese, tomatoes, rocket and dressing in a large bowl, season, then toss to combine. 5. Divide salad among shallow bowls, scatter with pine nuts then serve and enjoy!
Cranberry Apple Pie Ingredients • Serves 8 Pie 1 refrigerated pie pastry 2 cups apples, peeled, cored, and quartered 2 cups fresh cranberries (thawed if frozen) 2/3 cup sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 1/2 tablespoons flour Crumb Topping 1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 4 tablespoons cold butter, cut into 1/4-inch pieces Method 1. Preheat oven to 200ºC. Line a 23 cm standard (not deep-dish) pie pan with the pastry, fluting the edge. 2. Thinly slice the apples crosswise and combine them in a large bowl with the cranberries. Add the sugar, lemon juice, and flour, mixing well. Transfer the filling to the pie shell, smoothing the top of the fruit. Bake for 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, and cinnamon for the topping. Add the butter, rubbing it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. 4. After 30 minutes, remove the pie from the oven and reduce the temperature to 190ºC. Spread the topping over the pie and bake it for another 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is golden and the fruit thickens and bubbles around the edges. 5. Allow the pie to cool before serving.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Emotional Coaching Last month, I gave you an outline of a parenting tool called “emotion coaching”. This month, I thought I would give you an example of how I do emotion coaching. I don’t follow the outline exactly. I go with what is happening at the time. The most important part is that you acknowledge your child’s feelings, stay with her whilst she is upset, and support her to move on when she is ready. Scene: My youngest son accidently washed a Christmas beetle down the sink. He loves all creatures, and has a compassionate heart. I heard a wail from the bathroom, and him screaming that he had killed the beetle. Me: You are so sad about the Christmas beetle getting washed down the sink (noticing the emotion). He headed towards me and leapt into my arms for a hug. He continued to cry and lament the death of the Christmas beetle. This boy has big emotions. Me: You are so, so sad. You are worried that it has died. You wish it hadn’t happened. You are crying. (Reflecting what he was saying and observing what he was doing.) I continued to hold him, and reflect his sadness. Me: Where do you feel your sadness? Boy: In my heart, and in my eyes because I can’t stop crying (locating the emotion in the body). Me: I would feel sad too because I like creatures too (empathising). When he had calmed down, and he was over his upset,
I asked him what he knew about Christmas beetles (exploring). We had a discussion about Christmas beetles. How they change from lawn grubs into beetles. How our dogs dig up the grubs and eat them (yuk!). This wasn’t a teaching moment, it was a shared moment - I know what interests him. His dad piped up and said that Christmas must be coming again because it was a Christmas beetle, and that made the boy laugh. Part of being a positive parent is helping to organise your child’s feelings. It is not telling her to “get over it, and on with it”. It’s not dismissing how she feels. It’s not distracting her with a toy to try to cheer her up. It is being with your child through all of the bigness and discomfort of it all. You don’t want your child to be so upset or angry, and you are tempted to try and move her through it quickly so you can get on with being calmer and happier. However, the more you acknowledge your child’s feelings and “be with” her, the more emotionally attuned she will become. In time, she will learn how to organise her own feelings because she has had it modelled for her. I don’t live in Disneyland. I know this is not possible all of the time. There are days when I have a screaming boy when I’m trying to get out the door to get to work. I do some acknowledging of feelings but I tell him that I don’t have time to organise his feelings the way he is used to. Because he is “heard” most of the time, he can tolerate the times when it’s not possible. Next month: How to do emotion coaching with an angry child. Narelle Smith

Celebrating Mother’s Day Sunday 12th May “God could not be everywhere, and therefore he made mothers.” – Rudyard Kipling “All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.” – Abraham Lincoln “A mother’s arms are made of tenderness and children sleep soundly in them.” – Victor Hugo “There is no way to be a perfect mother, and a million ways to be a good one.” – Jill Churchill
m is for the million things she gave me, o means only that she’s growing old, t is for the tears she shed to save me, h is for her heart of purest gold; e is for her eyes, with love-light shining, r means right, and right she’ll always be.
mother
Put them all together, they spell A word that means the world to me.
- Howard Johnson The writer of this acronym has cleverly articulated why mums are so great and each generation it seems, learns more and more just how important mums are in the fabric of family life, relationships and our society. The more we appreciate the depth of a mother’s heart, the better we are for it. The elevation of women in society hasn’t always been the case throughout history though and in 1st Century Rome during the time of Jesus, women were not as highly spoken of as their male counterparts. In a very male dominated patriarchal society, women had no voting rights, in some cases they were considered property of their husbands, they were not allowed to go out in public without an escort and generally women were poorly educated. Their relative silence in the pages of history bares testament to the place they held in the social order of things. It’s so unusual then to read the plethora of names and activities of women in the Bible and in Christian history and as we leave the Easter story behind us for another year, it’s worth going back to the scene at the cross to see something quite amazing as an example. We may remember on one hand, how great fear was instilled in the hearts of Jesus’ disciples at his arrest, as they cut their losses and fled from the Jewish authorities till the heartbreak was over.
We might remember Peter’s denial and that he hid at a distance as his Lord was whipped and beaten. Yet here, at the foot of the cross, in a seemingly insignificant verse, we cannot help but be drawn in by the courage and devotion on the other hand, of these great women: 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. Though they knew the secular power and brutality that placed him there, they were willing to stand by their Lord, till the end. Though she saw her own son’s pain and had no power to save him, Mary remained faithfully at her son’s side. Though Jesus had chosen twelve men to carry on his mission to the world, at the cross, when all hope seemed lost, there remained these brave women, hopeful till the end. This scene is written in history not simply to show the great courage of Jesus’ mother and the other ladies, but also as a recognition of the culture change that Jesus himself had begun, the elevation and proper dignity to women. Jesus was the one who, as a Jewish man broke custom to speak to a Samaritan woman at a well. He was the one who raised the selfworth of a prostitute who was scorned by her village, to believe that she could be called a daughter of the Lord of heaven and earth. Jesus loved Martha and Mary and even encouraged them to sit at the teacher’s feet, simply unheard of in a 1st century Jewish setting. Historically, one great thing the Christian church has continued to carry forward, is the value Jesus has for women, particularly in our western democratic society. God really does love mums. It’s something worth celebrating! Happy Mother’s Day! Rev Mark Bonnici Church @ The College
