Bella Runs Away with the Circus Ten year old Glenmore Park resident Bella Grosse has quite literally ‘run away with the circus.’ Bella will be performing with the Webers Circus for their entire 2016 tour. Four years ago Bella had the opportunity to be a part of the World Circus Day workshop at Webers Circus during a tour in Penrith. Bella and her family were introduced to Natalie and Wonita Weber as well as Tim Matousek and they remained in contact. Bella worked exceedingly hard and formed relationships along the way which eventually lead to the opportunity for her to join the circus. Bella started taking dance classes at the age of 18 months, at 5 she fell in love with the circus and by the time she was 6, she was climbing silks. Her mum Brooke said “since then she has been upside down and learning everything she can. She loves the circus life.” Circus life is extremely busy for Bella with up to 5 performances a week as well as many hours of training, travelling and school. Bella attends school on Fridays at Webers Circus with their teacher and the other kids who are also part of the circus.  Bella has run away with the circus! After 36 years as General Assistant at Regentville Public School, Mr Bruce Chamberlin has retired. After all this time, one can only imagine the memories and experiences he would have had and the contribution and influence he provided to the school. Fondly named “Mr Bruceâ€? by the students of the school, when he started at Regentville Public School there were only 50 students and 2 teachers. Now, 36 years later the school is significantly bigger with over 700 students. When asked what would have to be his funniest memory at Regentville Mr Bruce could only mention the Kindergarten kids and the hilarious things they come up with. One fond memory was when a new Kindy student went up to him and said “Hello Mr Bruce!â€? to which Mr Bruce responded using his name. The student was so shocked that he knew his name and thought he was “so cleverâ€? however‌. Mr Bruce was just reading his name from his drink bottle. Mr Bruce was able to build some incredible relationships with students over the years and remembers when a set of twins who were in Year 3 told him that it was “their birthday coming up on Friday!â€?. Mr Bruce asked “Is your birthday on the 17th of November?â€? they responded “yes!â€? When Mr Bruce told them that it was his birthday on the 17th of November as well they simply said “No Mr Bruce! It can’t be your birthday because it is our birthday!â€? The relationships that Mr Bruce was able to create with the students during their time at Regentville did not end when they left the school. Mr Bruce can recall many occasions where he has been recognized by past students when simply out at the grocery store or at the bank. Seeing past students now return to Regentville as Parents of current students, Mr Bruce is reminded of the large and close knit community that he has tirelessly contributed to over the past 36 years. About 8 years ago, due to his tireless effort and continued hard work, Mr Bruce received the greatest recognition of all. He was simply told “You have to dress a little better for assembly on Friday.â€? It was shortly revealed that he was to receive the State Award for his efforts. Mr Bruce looks forward to going on holidays and “just enjoying his retirement at homeâ€? with his family and friends and looks forward to meeting many students over the coming years from Regentville Public School. ď ˛ď€ Farewell Mr. Bruce. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

What Next? Do you have any chocolate left over from Easter? For many people Easter seems to have happened weeks ago, and now you are back in the day to day; work, family, getting kids to school, trying to find a seat on the train, shopping, weekend sport. At least with autumn, the grass doesn’t grow as fast and need cutting every second day! But is that all? After Easter, are we just back into the day to day? Did Easter change you in any way? At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we are encouraged to discover how the events of Easter; Jesus death on a cross, and three days later his rising to life, are events that changed history. Yet, perhaps even bigger than that, the events surrounding Easter have the capacity to change lives. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, during our Sunday Church services, and in many of our groups that meet during the week, we have been discovering from the New Testament book of Acts, how the first Christians declared the powerful implications of the fact that Jesus has risen from the dead. The constant announcement of the first Christians was a declaration how “God raised Jesus from the dead and we are witnesses of these things.” It so encouraging over the years I have been at Glenmore Park Anglican Church to see so many people’s lives transformed and renewed by this magnificent truth! People given peace and hope, being able to celebrate joy and forgiveness. People amazed by God’s kindness, knowing they have direction and a sure future. These are great things we would like to share with everyone! They are great truths for all people. Especially, we would love to share this good news with you at our Birthday Celebration services, 8.30 & 10.15am, as well as 5 & 7pm. on Sunday 1st May. Each service will have many special things happening and you won’t want to miss the special “Birthday Party” at the conclusion of our 10.15 service with jumping castles, BBQ, Kindy Farm, face painting and more. Want to find out more? Check us out on Facebook, online or give me a call on 4733 1635. Rev John Lavender

Glenmore Park’s Snake Catchers

ď ˛ď€ Image source: www.facebook.com/australiansnakecatchers

Australian Snake Catchers, Sean and Freya provide very important information for the local Glenmore Park community in regards to Snake Sightings within the local area as well as what to do if you see a snake and how to protect your pets. Sean and Freya Cade work with local vets, the Police and the Fire Brigade “restraining, advising and removing snakes and reptiles that are both legally and illegally held. Snakes such as Red Bellied Black Snakes and Eastern Brown Snakes are both around Glenmore Park. “These are both venomous and are both capable of inflicting a fatal bite they say. Small Eyed Snakes and Yellow Faced Whip Snakes have mild venom and are often mistaken for the Black and Brown Snake.

Sightings around Glenmore Park include the electricity grid located near the Town Centre, Blue Hills, Surveyors Creek and Penrith Golf Course. In the event that you see a snake, “Do NOT approach it, keep your eye on it and call a professional such as Australian Snake Catchers say the couple. Sean and Freya can be contacted on 0410 761 575 or 0452 492 836. Their advice is, if you are unsure of what type of snake it is, “treat it as venomous and keep children and pets away from the snake. Sean and Freya recommend that residents maintain their gardens keeping lawns mowed with shoes and toys securely stored and away from back doors. They also recommend that pet food and water be stored in plastic containers and bird aviaries, and hutches be cleaned regularly to maintain pet safety. Pets are often bitten on the face, neck, chest, front legs and feet and symptoms may include “sudden weakness and your pet may collapse, muscle tremors, drooling and shaking, vomiting or emptying of their bowels, their pupils will dilate and paralysis may set in quite quickly. Owners should check their animals for localized swelling, bleeding and/or a bite mark. If you suspect that your pet has been bitten, they should be taken to the nearest vet immediately. For more information on Sean and Freya and the Australian Snake Catchers, please visit their Facebook page: www. facebook.com/australiansnakecatchers

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Soul Matters: Not Liking How We Look Much of our inner peace is tied up with how we think about ourselves, including how we look. It is not infrequently I encounter people who shy away from looking at themselves in the mirror – literally. I suspect this is too much of a reminder of their failure to meet our society’s criteria for acceptable looks. Skin products spruik perfect skin and eternal youthfulness but the Aussie sun ages our skin, and we naturally get older, meaning we move further from the picture-perfect image over time. Clothing brands present muscle-bound men and Barbie-like women, and we come somehow to believe that if we are not like that we should feel some sort of shame about it. What a conspiracy against the human soul! In some parts of Asia cream is used to lighten skin pigment to give a fairer complexion like Westerners. Here we tan our skin to be more “with it”. Did you know that around 700 years ago in the Medieval Period plump women who were considered sexually desirable – leanness was associated with peasants who had little food, and such associations defined what it meant to look good. And what it means to look good is still worked out in the same sort of way today. A friend said of his girlfriend: “She makes my soul come alive, but she isn’t that good looking.” It struck me that because God isn’t influenced by advertising and other cultural associations, he sees every person he created as amazingly good looking exactly as they are! Such is the love of God expressed when Jesus died for every person, inviting them to believe in him, and to find freedom from their sins and the evils of our world - like those telling us we are unworthy of acceptance if we don’t look a certain way. I hope that this is food for thought, because in it we will find peace for our souls. To have your say go to my Soul Matters blog at www.paulmarshall.org. Go well, Paul

Man Dies After Car Hits Power Pole A man has died after his car hit a power pole at South Penrith last month. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Parent Traps A “parent trap” is a behaviour that parents do that encourages their children’s mistaken behaviour. Parents can actually set their children up for failure. Listed below are three “parent traps” to be aware of in your daily interactions with your children. #1 Focusing on the negative The more attention you pay to negative behaviours the more your child will do of them. Forty years of research tells us that paying attention to children’s negative behaviours encourages them to do more of them. Children are hard-wired for attention. It’s all about survival – look at me, remember to feed me and look after me. What kind of attention (and thus behaviour) would you prefer – positive or negative? Make a big effort to pay more attention to what your children are doing well, for example, playing well, speaking kindly to each other, packing away their things, and putting their clothes in the wash basket. #2 It’s all about the praise The “good boy/girl/job” type of praise makes kids praise junkies. They love it but it doesn’t tell them what they are doing well. It makes them more dependent on you. Praise your children by telling them what they are doing well. For example, “I appreciate you putting the clothes in the wash basket, that makes it so much easier for me”, and “that is a clever idea, I can see that you put a lot of thought into figuring that out”. This is called “Descriptive Praise” and it helps to develop a well-rounded sense of self, and encourage thinking and independence. Remember to make it genuine and sincere. #3 Making children feel bad about themselves will make them correct their behaviour Calling kids names, yelling and screaming at them, harsh criticism, and putting them down, creates an internal sense of shame that can lead to mental health problems in adolescence and adulthood. When did you ever do better when someone made you feel bad about yourself? Make your home a “be kind zone” where nobody is allowed to call others names or put them down. Home should be an emotionally safe place for children and parents. Stay tuned for more parent traps next month.

Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli and Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, last month announced the name of the new school being developed in Glenmore Park, catering specifically for students with disabilities. The school, due for completion in Term 1 2017, will be known as Fernhill School, following discussions with the local community. “After consulting with the community, the name Fernhill stuck. It is a name of historical significance here in the Mulgoa Valley,â€? Mr Piccoli said. Minister Piccoli and Tanya Davies inspected the site of the $16.1 million purpose-built facility, which will accommodate up to 160 students from Kindergarten through to Year 12. “From 2017, this new school will cater for young people with intellectual and physical disabilities in state-of-the-art facilities without them having to travel long distances from home,â€? Mr Piccoli said. As part of the investment, facilities at Fernhill School will include: • Special education classrooms; • Interactive learning spaces; • A hydrotherapy pool; • Outdoor learning areas; and • A multipurpose hall Tanya Davies commented on Fernhill School’s energy efficient and ecologically sustainable design, as well as the crucial purpose underpinning the development of the special needs school, “Fernhill School represents an exciting development for the Mulgoa Community. In particular, the new school will provide a high quality, purpose-designed environment for students and their families residing within the region, lifting any previous burdens or unnecessary difficulties that previously faced them,â€? Tanya Davies said. Since 2011 the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has committed more than $4 billion to school infrastructure and maintenance, funding 23 new and relocated schools and 50 major upgrades. This investment is in addition to the $1 billion education fund, as part of Rebuilding NSW, which will be responsible for 1,600 new or refurbished classrooms delivered across the State. ď ˛ Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli and Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies announce name of new school.

Preheat oven to 150°C. Brush a 7cm-deep, 10 x 20cm (base measurement) loaf pan with melted butter. Line the base and sides with non-stick baking paper. Sift the combined flour into a large bowl. Add the sugar, coconut and cinnamon. Make a well in the centre. Add the eggs, banana, oil and vanilla. Stir until just combined. Gently fold in the raspberries. Pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the surface. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until a skewer inserted into centre comes out clean. Set aside in pan for 20 minutes to cool before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. To make the fig butter, use an electric beater to beat the butter and icing sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the jam and beat until smooth. Cut banana bread into slices and serve with fig butter.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Spondylolisthesis Pain. What can be Done About it? Many people come to the clinic with back pain, their scans showing they have a condition called spondylolisthesis. That’s a big word but it simply means, one vertebra has slipped forward compared to the one above or below it. If you followed last month’s article you’ll already know: Every vertebra has two bony arches (one on the left, one on the right), which connect the front of the vertebra to the back half; About 6% of the general population have a break in at least one arch; This break is called a pars defect. Pars defects are more common in athletes playing certain sports, and they occur mostly in the ‘lower back’ (i.e. L4 & L5). The two bony arches are very important, because they stop the front half of a vertebra (called the vertebral body) from slipping forward. But when a person has a break in both the left and right arches, a vertebra may forward. This is especially so for the lowest 2 lumbar vertebra because they both sit on a large forward incline. Under these circumstances, any extra weight or stress on the spine from sport, heavy work or trauma can result in abnormal stretching of the ligaments and joint capsules that hold the vertebra in place. This may lead to a permanent forward slipping of one or more vertebra, as well as impingement of either the spinal cord or a nerve root exiting form the spinal column causing pain and other symptoms. Spondylolisthesis can be graded from 1-4 depending on how far forward a vertebra has slipped. The symptoms, often related to degree of slip, may include: Back or buttock pain, pain that runs from the lower back down one or both legs, numbness or weakness in one or both legs, difficulty walking, leg, back, or buttock pain that gets worse when you bend over or twist, loss of bladder or bowel control, rarely. When a vertebra has slipped forward only minutely, the bony bridges may heal by themselves, if re-injury is avoided and back muscles elongated. The larger the slip the more likely a person will have symptoms and in severe cases surgical procedures may be required to directly repair of the pars, sometimes accompanied by a fusion procedure (Syrmou 2010) . But even with relatively large slips, releasing muscles locked around the spine can reduce inflammation & provide greater flexibility of the torso. Together this reduces the impact of bending and twisting and may lead to a considerable reduction in symptoms, to the point where surgery may not be required. If you have unresolved back pain, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details.

The 2016 NSW All Schools Triathlon Championships brought great success for the students of Glenmore Park High School. Year 10 students Trae Williams, Stephen Cuff and Caleb Pawlutshenko were the stand out last month at the International Regatta Centre, Penrith Lakes. The boys took part in a 600m swim, a 15km cycle and a 4km run in which they placed first out of over 100 teams from across the state. The boys completed their event in 43 minutes and 01second. Temperatures on the day reached the mid 30’s at which point organisers decided to cancel the final race of the day. Sports Organiser at Glenmore Park High School Taher Safadi said “Our boys were extremely proud of their achievements and were happy to be the first place school overall as last year they placed as the first public school but second across other sectors.â€? Taher Safadi has commented on the commitment and determination shown by the students. “All students had a great day and worked really hard to meet each of their goals and complete the Triathlon.â€? Year 8 student Jayke Wilkie also participated in the Triathlon Championships as part of the Individual Championships. Jayke successfully completed his event in 58minutes and 22seconds and needs to be commended on his hard work and determination in training outside of school in order to prepare for the event. These athletes deserve all their success and are encouraged to “make the most of the various sporting opportunities that are offered at the school in the futureâ€? said Taher. ď ˛ Image credit: Taher Safadi, Sports Organiser Glenmore Park High School.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital New Veterinarian!! We are still growing!! Yay!! We have employed another veterinarian to accommodate the growth of the business. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to welcome Dr Jonathan Young to the team. He has six years experience in small animal practice, and has undertaken further education in surgery, diagnostic imaging, dermatology, and feline medicine. He is competent in dental procedures, soft-tissue surgery, and in the long-term care of dogs with Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) and diabetes. His current passion is in refining his approach to all aspects of feline and canine medicine. He will take the time to tailor the health care for each individual pet and pet-owner. In his spare time he takes his folks out for lunch and likes to grow vegetables in their backyard. His interest in veterinary science probably started from looking after many critters whilst growing up, including mice, budgerigars, zebra finches, ducks, Black Moor goldfish, Dwarf rabbits, and house-sitting for his friends' dogs and cats. He hopes one day to have a house with an automatic sensor tap, so that his cat can have flowing springwater any time of the day. Dr Theresa Pizzuto is Coming Back off Maternity Leave Theresa has been on maternity leave for 12 months and will be returning part-time June/July 2016. We look forward to having her back at work.

Leo the Guide Dog Puppy Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and 6 puppies came to the Off Leash Park at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for a group training session. During this training session, the puppies tried on the Guide Dog Harnesses for the first time. They looked so cute!! Leo will be returned to The Guide Dogs when is about 1 year of age, where he will continue his training and hopefully succeed as a Guide Dog. For more information: www.guidedogs.com.au. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027. ď ˛ Guide Dog puppies off leash at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Image Supplied.

People usually don’t insult you directly. If they did, you could say something right back and be done with it. Instead, people use indirect methods of insult, so that you are confused and unsure of what happened. In that case, it usually dawns on you too late to do anything about it. The indirect insult allows people to act out their aggression without taking responsibility for it. Below are some hidden insults to look out for. 1. Disqualifications. Disqualifications usually begin with a cautionary statement. “Now don’t take this the wrong way.” Then comes the insult. 2. Jokes. Insults can often be hidden within a joke. A person might say, “I’m just joking. Don’t be so serious!” “OMG you can’t even have a joke with you!” 3. Backhanded Compliments. “Oh, I just love the way you weasel your way out of things,” your spouse may say to you. And you are confused. On one hand, you like being complimented, but you’re not sure it’s a compliment, and you find yourself becoming angry. 4. Guilt-Tripping. Guilt-tripping is another indirect way of insulting someone. Instead of saying to you, “I feel hurt that you don’t help me more,” the guilt-tripper moans, “I feel so tired all the time from doing all the housework myself. Instead of feeling sympathetic, you feel angry and then feel guilty about being angry. 5. Teasing. Teasing is all in good fun, isn’t it? Children often tease each other such as when older siblings tease younger siblings. It can also happen with adults, as when a husband teases his wife in front of his guy friends or a wife teases her husband in front of her girlfriends. These are just a few of a multitude of sneak attacks people make all the time, all in seemingly good fun. With each of these examples there is a barb at the centre that is hidden by the wrapping of non-threatening words. It is sometimes not easy to come back with a rejoinder when you are taken by surprise. Therefore it is good to rehearse by yourself or with a friend to be prepared for the next attack.
