Brett’s Challenge to be The Biggest Loser The Biggest Loser has changed the lives of countless Australians and now this iconic and inspirational series has returned to Network Ten in its most empowering season to date – The Biggest Loser: Transformed. Joining the 16 everyday Australians this season is Glenmore Park resident and former professional boxer, Brett Smith. Trading in his dangerous boxing career for one as a stonemason and tradesman, Brett now works on-call at all hours of the day, leading to a diet heavy in fast food. Family is hugely important to Brett and he cannot imagine life without his wife and children. He enters The Biggest Loser: Transformed with the motto: “Ever kilo I lose is an extra year with my kids”. The 40 year old married father of two children, entered the television series weighing 116.8 kilograms. Brett is not afraid to train hard and is ready to put his competitiveness to good use again. He now wants to regain his professional boxing physique. This year, 16 everyday Australians with relatable weight issues will transform into the happiest, fittest and best versions of themselves. Their weight-loss goals are within reach, but the very real pressures and stresses of everyday life including money, work, kids and relationships have taken priority. Hosted by international model and former The Biggest Loser contestant Fiona Falkiner, along with two of Australia’s leading trainers and fitness professionals, Shannan Ponton and Libby Babet, The Biggest Loser: Transformed gives Australians the motivation and tools to be the best they can be. Incredible and jaw-dropping transformations emerge as the 16 contestants undertake a complete overhaul of mind, body and soul – and change their lives forever.  Glenmore Park’s Brett Smith on The Biggest Loser: Transformed | Image: Network Ten

Glenmore Park mother Justine Milne recently participated with her husband, children and a group of local people in Clean Up Australia, braving the rain and cleaning up around Ched Towns Reserve. Not long after the event, whilst walking her children to school, they started to have a conversation about people leaving rubbish and furniture along the side of the road in the local community. This one little idea has now grown into an initiative that Justine hopes to spread, with a proposal for residents to donate one of their four yearly Council clean ups to help clean up the area. “After the event (Clean Up Australia), we felt proud of our achievements together, but it didn’t solve the problem of furniture dumped on the sides of the roads. After reaching out to the property owners and Council and myself having a Council clean up ordered, I thought, we get four Council clean ups a year, but how many do we actually use?â€? explained Justine. “We would use two Council cleans ups a year, no more than three. Why don’t we donate one to the area we live in? The idea is that you order the pick-up, then use a ute the day before pick-up and collect larger items off the side of the road for collection at your propertyâ€? said Justine. As a proud local resident, Justine loves living in the community and all the natural beauty in the area. She hopes that by leading by example to her family and friends and taking action; that people will get on board with her initiative. “I have had a response from the Council. They asked for photos of the worst affected areas, which I sent so that they can place stickers on the items which say ‘Illegal Dumping, Under Investigation’. For Glenmore Park to continue to be a great place to live, I would like to see Clean up Australia Day be part of our community every day. It costs nothing more than a little bit of time and fuelâ€? ended Justine. ď ˛ď€ Justine (front row with vest) and team who participated in Clean Up Australia | Image: Aaron Milne

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Hope at Easter What is Easter? A holiday? A few days off? A time for chocolate and hot cross buns? These are good things, although perhaps not too much chocolate! Yet, it is sad that many people sometimes miss the key truth that is central to Easter. Easter is centred on the historical events surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus. But why do we remember, even celebrate the death of someone? There are two important reasons. Firstly, Jesus’ death is no ordinary death. The Bible declares that Jesus died in our place, in the place of you and me, to deal with the consequences of the fact that none of treats God as we should. This is big, but none of us gives God the place in our lives that he deserves. Yet, the Bible declares that because of God’s great love for us, because of God’s desire to have friendship with us, Jesus came into our world to give his life so that we could have this eternal friendship with God. Secondly, Jesus didn’t stay dead! This is even bigger! While on Good Friday we remember Jesus’ death for us, on Easter Sunday, we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead authenticates who Jesus is. But, Jesus’ rising from the dead also guarantees that any person who trusts in Jesus, committing their life to him, will also rise from the dead and have eternal life with God!

The Bible declares how the Easter event, Jesus death and resurrection gives you and I hope; real, sure confident, transforming hope! It is this hope, which the Bible declares is “an anchor for the soul” that we would love to share and celebrate with you this Easter! Brumbies Partnering with Local Business This year is fast proving to be the biggest one yet for the Glenmore Park Brumbies. To help with the local rugby league club’s success on and off the field, it is due to the hard work from the players, coaches, volunteers, family, friends and importantly the sponsors. Peter Morrissey has been recruited as the Sponsorship Manager for the Glenmore Park Brumbies for the 2017 season, a big role within the club. “My role is to bring together sponsors for the club to help cover the substantial cost of running a junior rugby league club. Every person that puts in hours towards the club is unpaid. All of the funds raised from sponsorship goes towards reducing the fees for the kids to play the game” explained Peter. “My goal this year included building a new website to help the club gain higher profile sponsors and to create better communication between all the players, parents, grandparents, sponsors, suppliers and every other person that plays a part in helping the Brumbies every year. Our previous website did not allow functionality to promote and market all our sponsors the way we can with the new website. It is also very timely as the Brumbies are 25 years old in 2018 and the website is a great vehicle to help promote this milestone” he added. The club have been fortunate to build on their sponsors from 2016, including their Gold-Major Sponsor: Silver Spur Penrith, Silver Sponsor: Denco and Bronze Sponsors: Mastercut Family Meats Glenmore Park, Shades Painting and Decorating and Sydney Iveco. There are also businesses that have sponsored for many years such as Garton Group McDonalds, Dino’s Mobile Pizza, IGA Oatley, Ace Butcher Supplies, First National Real Estate Glenmore Park, S Kopp Building Services and Mortgage Choice St Marys. The new sponsors for 2017 include Penrith Toyota, Elite Sand and Soil, Coles, Mastercut Family Meats Glenmore Park, Bakers Delight Glenmore Park, Radio Rentals and Australia Post Glenmore Park. If you would like information about sponsorship with the Glenmore Park Brumbies, you can contact Peter Morrissey on 0411 073800. You can also visit their website at www.glenmoreparkbrumbiesjuniorrugbyleaguefootballclub.com.au or search ‘Glenmore Park Brumbies JRLFC’ on Facebook.

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Easter’s Great Beauty Our souls thrive when we experience beauty. The problem is that we often have our heads down in our busy routines and miss beauty all around us – in our spouse, our kids, an act of generous kindness, or in nature. I was at Riley’s Lookout near Mulgoa recently, looking out over the breathtaking Nepean Gorge. Early morning sunlight was dancing on the river and lighting up the greenery of the National Park when a flock of parrots cheekily declared their arrival. The beauty of it all delighted my senses – it felt amazing to be alive! If we heard the story of how a brother died from injuries sustained while saving his sister from some life-threatening situation, we would be in awe. The purity and nobility of such a selfless act is great beauty, and it would touch our souls deeply. The Bible teaches that Easter is about Jesus Christ offering his life to pay for the sins of humanity so that we can be saved. This means that we get to have a relationship with God, and to experience his help in this earthly life. It also, staggeringly, means that our life does not end with our physical death. Instead we live on beyond the grave with God and all who have also placed their trust in Jesus. This act of generosity by Jesus is Easter’s great beauty. Like the brother who died to save his sister, this selfless act takes your breath away if you think about it – it is awesome! And to grasp that death, the great enemy of human life, has been defeated causes our soul to thrive. Hope blossoms, fear of the future retreats, and we feel how amazing it is to be alive! Could it be possible? The Bible says so, and calls for faith in Jesus Christ and his awe-inspiring selfless act to make it true for our own life. Happy Easter, and I pray for the sake of your soul, that you can discover its great beauty. Live life well, Paul

Commit and ignore the tears Trust the teacher is prepared for difficult separation Avoid sitting too close Reduce eye contact with your child Find comfort in speaking with desk staff if you are finding this too overwhelming • Avoid talking too much about swimming prior to arriving • Avoid any adult discussions about the lesson in front of the child The second lesson is often worse, so be prepared. Your child’s teacher will fully support the transition and they will also guide you. For many parents, this can be the first time you entrust your child to someone who isn’t a family member. Many parents worry about their child disrupting the lesson for other students. In the younger swim groups, its very likely students have or will cry from time to time. This will pass, so try not to get too worried or stressed by this. Finally follow through, the tears will pass soon and the nurturing environment will soon become a place where your child thrives.

Healthy Happy Start to Swimming Lessons If your child is starting swimming lessons for the first time, it would be fair and responsible to anticipate a period of settling and adjustment. Every child is different, and some may find this transition more difficult than others. It is not uncommon for your child to cry in this situation, as it is their only way of communicating the fact that they are unhappy about the change of circumstance. An experienced teacher will understand the helpless feeling parents experience while watching their child cry. Providing the teacher with a little background information, parents can feel more at ease as the teacher works towards settling the child. An example could include; the latest show or toy the child likes, recent visits to grandparents’ house, or what they are doing after the lesson. This approach will assist in creating a happier and safer in the water experience. For children who find it difficult to separate, the following ideas may assist: • Leave the house dressed ready to swim • Avoid negotiating

Nepean Martial Arts Hits The 1000 Mark It was a night of celebration recently when Nepean Martial Arts welcomed its one thousandth member. Lucas Woolcott and his brothers Dylan and Braydon have joined the Surveyors Creek Wolf Pack class this year and are training in Taekwondo. To celebrate the occasion Lucas, the 1000th student, was presented with a new uniform and a new cap, marking him as a very special member of the club. The club has been operating in the Nepean area since 2001. Its first class was held at Glenmore Park Public School, with just two students. Sixteen years later the club still trains at Glenmore Park but, under the guidance of Head Instructor Dave Adlam, has expanded to offer classes at Surveyors Creek, St. Clair, and Eastern Creek each week. The club specialises in Korean martial arts and now teaches Taekwondo, an unarmed martial art, and Haidong Gumdo, a sword martial art. Discipline, inclusion and self-confidence are the focus of the club’s activities and that seems to be working for their students as they make their martial arts journey.  Pleased as punch to be celebrating their 1000th member at Nepean Martial Arts | Image Supplied

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Feelings All feelings are OK. Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, excitement are unacceptable. Even strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry about injustice (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsibility for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. So what else do kids need to know about feelings? • You feel feelings in your body. • You can tell how someone else is feeling by looking at their facial expression and body language, hearing what they say, watching what they do, and looking at the situation. You can also ask them how they feel. • Different people can have different feelings about the same thing. This can sometimes cause conflict, but it is important to understand that not everyone will think and feel the same as you. Even the best of friends will disagree. • You can have two different feelings about the same situation. For example, you may be excited about moving to a new school, but worried too. • Your feelings about something can change over time. This happens because over time you gain more knowledge, understanding, experience, and maturity. • To understand others’ behaviour, you have to understand their perspective. Our thoughts, feelings, and actions are linked. If we are thinking negative thoughts, it will lead to feeling sad, angry, or frustrated. These strong negative emotions will affect what we do, our actions. When we learn to understand the nature of our feelings, we gain a greater understanding of ourselves and others.

Jimmy has been through it all, and lived to tell the tale which he did in his bestselling memoir, Working Class Boy, and has earned him a place in Australia’s heart and heartland. Along the way he has sold more records in Australia than any other domestic rock & roll artist. Jimmy’s live shows are legendary for their intensity and we can’t wait till he rocks the house at Fernhill Estate. With a career spanning over 30 years, Jon Stevens has had a remarkable journey as a singer, songwriter and performer. He’s best known as the frontman of legendary Australian band, Noiseworks, joining INXS as the “seventh member”, and maintaining a successful solo career as one of the country’s foremost touring artists. Last year Jon joined forces with legendary musician, songwriter and producer Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) to record a new album, Starlight, which was due to be released at the end of March. This will be Jon Stevens’ only Sydney performance. Whether you choose to picnic on the rolling lawns or pick up a Golden Circle or VIP Heritage Package, Fernhill Estate Presents promises to be a spectacular evening for the whole family and tickets will sell out quickly. For full details on the ticket packages, transport options and Fernhill Estate, go to www. fernhillestate.net.au Jimmy Barnes , Working Class Boy | Image: Stephanie Barnes

The Pride of Emu Plains After a long hot Summer and a wet start to Autumn, the players and families at Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions AFL Club are eager to get started on the 2017 season. Pre-season training started in January, with multiple opportunities to come down to Dukes Oval at Emu Plains to try out the sport. The club is very excited to announce that from their membership base of 213 registered players (and still growing), they will be able to field 13 competitive teams between the Under 9’s and Under 17’s, including their Under 15 Youth Girls team that is growing from strength to strength. The club can also boast an Auskick membership of nearly 40 younger players. Last month, all of the club members had the chance to meet and train with GWS Women’s player Renee Tomkins. They now look forward to special guest visits from their affiliated club ambassador, Callum Ward throughout the season. The Club Launch event late last month officially started the season, with most teams participating in trial games against Canada Bay and Southwest Tigers before the first round. They were also excited about the GWS Club March at Spotless Stadium that weekend. Their upcoming Annual Trivia Night Fundraiser will take place on May 5 at Melrose Hall in Emu Plains. If you are interested in booking details, please contact Brenda Quayle (Vice President) on the Lions website (www.lionsafl.com.au) or search Emu Plains/Glenmore Park “Lions Junior AFL on Facebook. It’s also not too late to register – check out the Lions website for more details.

HEALTH MATTERS

Drug Induced Osteoporosis Many commonly prescribed medications contribute to significant bone loss and fractures, yet according to researchers at Oklahoma university, many physicians are unaware that ‘Drug-induced osteoporosis is a significant health problem. The problem is compounded because sicker & older people often take multiple medications, many of which induce bone loss. Just taking extra calcium and vitamin D won’t really counteract this drug-induced bone loss. It just ‘ain’t that simple’. Bone undergoes continual turnover, i.e. it is continually broken down and rebuilt anew. At any-one-time about 5% of your bone is undergoing this carefully coordinated process. The process involves many different cell types. It’s controlled by many sensitive cell-cell chemical signals, including nutrients from the diet. Medications can interfere with this process, leading to bone resorption. So, which drugs can harm bone density? Let’s take a look. Glucocorticoid medication e.g. prednisone taken longer term (>3 months, not necessarily consecutive), can lead to significant bone loss. As little as 3–10 mg prednisone is associated with fractures, with between 30–50% of patients developing these. Antacid drugs called proton pump inhibitors used to treat acid reflux, heart burn & ulcers, with longer term use (several years), especially at higher doses, reduce absorption of calcium (Osteoporosis Canada 2017c) and many other nutrients important for bone strength. This increases hip fracture risk in older adults. Aromatase inhibitors - breast cancer drugs, block estrogen production & significantly lower blood estrogen inducing bone loss, some studies showing increased risk of esp. vertebral & wrist fractures. Antiandrogen therapy for prostate cancer reduces bone mineral density, more during the first year of therapy in men over

50, increasing fracture risk. Longer-term injectable Depo-Provera use for contraception, significant reduces bone mineral density, partially reversible on discontinuation. Excessive thyroid hormone replacement can also reduce bone mineral density and quality, & increase fractures. Anti-seizure medications TegretolÂŽ (carbamazepine) and DilantinÂŽ (phenytoin) lower vitamin D & calcium absorption leading to low bone density. Diuretics, for fluid retention and swelling caused by heart failure e.g. LasixÂŽ (furosemide), promote kidney calcium excretion & reduced hip bone density. Aluminium-containing antacids for heartburn can inhibit phosphate absorption & reduce bone density. In patients with reduced kidney function, aluminium can inhibit bone mineralization Antirejection/immuosuppressive therapy such as cyclosporine (NeoralÂŽ) and tacrolimus (PrografÂŽ) used after organ transplant can increase bone loss. Heparin a blood thinner - long-term use may reduce bone density. Some cancer chemotherapy drugs can cause ovarian failure in women & premature menopause, or testicular failure & low testosterone in men, both lead to bone loss. Others include glucocorticoid therapy further increasing bone loss. Antirejection drugs to prevent organ transplant rejection or autoimmune disorders are associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk, exact mechanisms not known. Ask your doctor about the bone-density implications of all your medications!!

FROM EDITOR FROM THE THE EDITOR

Welcome to April. And what a wet start it has been. From the scorching heat to flooded roads and causeways of late last month. The cooler weather has been a welcome relief, as has seeing the gardens and lawns replenished and nourished. A big 'shout-out' to all our service people, emergency services and volunteers; with their recent assistance to families across our community battling this extreme flooding. You all go the extra mile, thank you! This month we have a wonderful publication full of interesting news, stories and events that are local to you! On page 13, Camille fronts our local campaign in finding the next 'Bondi Vet'. Lets put our wonderful community on the map and show our support. With Easter around the corner, enjoy the opportunity to spend more time with those who mean the most; and less time with the chocolate! All good things in moderation. From us to you, 'Happy Easter'. "Just be real, it's not that complicated." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
