You Can Now Roll the Dice of Penrith Monopoly After much anticipation, the official PENRITH MONOPOLY game has officially launched. Locals and tourists alike can now play the world’s most popular board game in a way that immortalises their beloved Penrith and its landmarks. Over several months, thousands of people and businesses having had their say, and after much deliberation, the locally themed squares selected that will make the entire game a truly Penrith experience are: • Brown – Nepean River and Sydney International Regatta Centre • Light Blue – Nepean Belle, Aqua Golf and Penrith Whitewater Stadium • Pink – Luddenham Country Markets, Club Paceway and Throw Axe • Orange – Nepean Hospital, Museum of Fire and The Joan Sutherland Centre • Red – High Street, Riley Street and Westfields • Yellow – The Red Cow, O’Donoghues and East Bank Nepean River • Green – Xavier College, Emu Hall and Mr Watkins • Dark Blue – Panthers Leagues Club and Panthers Stadium After such a difficult few years with bushfires and a global pandemic, it is about time we had a good news story that allows people to celebrate the area but also, support the businesses they love. The new MONOPOLY: Penrith Edition is available now at the following partners (RRP $69.95): • Luddenham Country Markets • Throw Axe • Nepean Hospital • Museum of Fire • Westfields • The Red Cow • O’Donoghues • PRD Real Estate • Xavier College • Emu Hall • Mr Watkins • Panthers Leagues Club • Club Paceway Dale Hackett, Monopoly Manager, Winning Moves – manufacturers of the official Penrith version of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro – said, “I’m thrilled that this edition celebrates such a patriotic area of greater Sydney. The Penrith community has fully embraced bringing this game to life, and now it’s available for the public to purchase and roll the dice!” Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said, “It’s fantastic to see Penrith has its own edition of Monopoly, putting it in company with some of the biggest cities in the world. Penrith has so much to offer and that’s reflected in the assortment of businesses and landmarks in the game. It’s a testament to our city’s strong community pride that so many local businesses have been eager to get involved”. The MONOPOLY game first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages. r Who’s ready to play? | Images/Article: Winning Moves. MONOPOLY © 1935, 2018 Hasbro. All Rights Reserved.

Local Matthew Reid is preparing for the Walk for Terry Fox later this year, a walk that will see him start at Glenmore Park and finish in Canberra, all whilst raising much needed funds for charity. Setting out from Glenmore Park High School, the walk will take 10 days to complete, finishing at the High Commission of Canada in Canberra and covering just under 300 kms. Matthew will be raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and has set the fundraising goal of $40,000. “I will be taking part in the walk to raise awareness about the amazing legacy and achievements of Terry Fox. I hope to inspire as many kids as possible and to talk to many schools as well. The funds that I raise for the walk will go to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead” said Matthew to the District Gazette. Terry Fox was a young Canadian who, despite having an artificial leg, participated in the Marathon of Hope, a crossCanada run to raise money for cancer research and awareness. Terry would run for 143 days over a distance of 5,373 kms before stopping due to primary cancer spreading into his lungs. Today, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $800 million to support cancer research and the Terry Fox Run now takes place in over 40 countries around the world. The Walk for Terry Fox will see Matthew walk, or ride if he has ankle problems, a distance of 30 kms a day. This will ensure he meets the target of under 300 kms in 10 days. “I will also be inviting students from every school I visit to walk with me and be a part of it” Matthew explained. Matthew has previously participated in charity runs around the country. In 2015, he ran from Melbourne to Sydney and in 2017 he ran from ANZ Stadium to Central Coast Stadium in aid of former boxer Troy Waters. To support Matthew in his quest, visit his fundraising page at https://www.bandagedbear.org.au/fundraisers/ httpswwwfacebookcomevents379120765961877. For more information, search ‘Walk for Terry Fox-To inspire our Kids’ on Facebook or contact Matthew on 0403 067629.

Got a Fussy Eater?

The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what they don’t eat, focus on what they do eat, and expand their range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If they get a lot of attention for their fussy eating, they will do more of it. Fussy eaters can be extremely determined and persistent (some might say ‘stubborn’). There is a strategy recommended by Dr Thomas Phelan – the back-up meal. You give your child tiny proportions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The only stipulation is that they have to try what is on the plate. They can eat what they want to and leave what they want to but they have to give it a bit of a go. If they like some of it they can have more. You give your child lots of descriptive praise for what they try and eat. The child at any time is able to ask for their back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. The backup meal is always the same. You pay no attention whatsoever to your child eating their back-up meal. Slowly but surely your child will eat more of the main meal and less of the back-up meal. This can take time – months or years. Just be consistent. You can be more persistent than your child, right? When I tell people the above story, they are concerned about the child “winning”. Is parenting a battle or a race? Are our children our enemies or adversaries? What is the most positive way to approach the situation? It’s better to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. Force, yelling, and manipulation will only work for a short time and the effects on your child are not that great. Never start a war with your child over food – you will not win. r

James Erskine Public School and Regentville Public School are one step closer to new and improved facilities, with the announcement of $450,000 in funding for the Mulgoa electorate as part of the NSW Government’s $120 million Metro Renewal Program. Since the announcement of the Metro Renewal Program in November last year, schools have been invited to apply for renewal projects to improve their school facilities. James Erskine Public School will receive $300,000 to fund a full refurbishment of their canteen and Regentville Public School will receive $150,000 in funding to improve their COLA, shade structures and walkways around the school. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies welcomed the news that the projects at James Erskine Public School and Regentville Public School have been funded. “I’m delighted that these projects have been included in the program!” “This investment by the Liberal and Nationals Government is essential for our students, so that they can thrive in a great learning environment, no matter where they live or what their circumstances may be”. “Delivery of these projects will be undertaken in the next 18 months as part of the NSW Government’s economic stimulus package for NSW schools” Mrs Davies said.

Rainbow Club Comes to Glenmore Park Rainbow Club provides a weekend, social and sporting activity in the local area where a child with a disability can participate – similar to their siblings without a disability. Their unique Swim the Rainbow program has been specially designed to teach children with a disability using structure, reward, and progress in a social, fun, and supportive aquatic environment. The swimming goals are aligned to the seven colours of the Rainbow (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet). When working on the basic goals, the lesson is structured around one teacher to one child (1:1). Once a child has mastered the basic goals, the lesson is expanded to include more than one child. Having more than one child in a lesson encourages social participation and introduces concepts such as taking turns, competing, and winning. Swim the Rainbow helps a child’s confidence increase, as the individual attention can enable them to progress more quickly, and many go on to participate in group lessons. As the rapport between teacher and child grows, this helps to eliminate either a fear of water or over-confidence in their abilities around no water (no fear). Rainbow Club Glenmore Park had their first lesson in the pool at Fernhill SSP school on Sunday 31st January 2021. The club currently has 27 members taught by three dedicated teachers, Karen, Allison, and Lachlan every Sunday from 8.30am to 1.30pm. A volunteer parent committee runs the club, with Frank the club manager leading them towards amazing things, and they are already proving that. The Club take part in the Murray Rose Malabar Magic Open Water Swim every February, this being the major fundraiser for the year. There is also an “All Clubs Carnival” in December, giving the kids an opportunity to socialise and compete. This year, Rainbow Club will be sending a team to the Special Olympics Junior National Games to be held in Launceston, Tasmania in October. For more information on Rainbow Club Glenmore Park or any other of the 31 Clubs available, please visit their website at www.myrainbowclub.org.au. Rainbow Club is a not-for-profit organisation. Any local businesses interested in sponsoring Rainbow Club Glenmore Park, please contact Robyn at westerndevelopment@myrainbowclub.org.au. r

Brumbies Ready to Stampede
The Penrith and Districts Junior Rugby League Competition kicks off this month and our very own Glenmore Park Brumbies are ready to hit the ground running! This year will see the Brumbies 28th season in the junior league competition, since their first year back in 1994. Since their humble beginnings, they have grown to 400-500 players fielding around 35 teams ahead of the 2021 season. With pre-season training done and trial games now over, the club is expecting a big year ahead. “This season is set to be a cracker of a year. After COVID last season, Penrith Junior League have worked hard and are introducing many new options. This includes the competition having more rounds. There will be an Under 5’s age group this year with their very own ‘Superhero’ round and our Under 6 age group will be able to play on the Panthers Stadium fields under lights” explained Craig Campbell, President of Glenmore Park Brumbies J.R.L.F.C. The 2021 season will be Campbell’s first year as President of the Glenmore Park Brumbies, and he already enjoys his role with the popular local sporting club. “Being a part of the Brumbies is like extending our family. The way that our community gets together and supports each other is amazing. Everything from ensuring all the players are able to train and play each week, mowing the playing fields, setting up early in the morning, cooking the BBQ and being great spectators is inspiring. It is an honour to watch” said Craig to the Glenmore Gazette. The Brumbies are a non-profit organisation and they rely upon the hard work of volunteers and our local businesses to support them. “We are always looking for new businesses to partner with. There are a few ways you can assist the club and no matter how big or small the offering; it is greatly appreciated by everyone in our Brumby family” Craig ended. If you are interested in supporting the Brumbies, you can email them for more information at glenmoreparkbrumbiessecretary@ gmail.com.

RSL Sub Branch Now Recruiting The City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch are currently recruiting and looking for new members. If you or members of your family have served in any of the services, including reservists past and present, you are eligible to join the RSL Sub Branch as a veteran. The RSL Sub Branch furthers the well being of serving and affiliate members, their families and the families of their former members. They provide a network of support for veterans and their families including assisting with appropriate contacts/services if needed. This year, the City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch recommends members of the public participate in their own ANZAC Day Driveway Services. These services were highly successful last year, during the pandemic. The Dawn Service/March in Penrith is a closed, ticketed event with 500 invited veterans, partners, and dignitaries. The Women’s Veterans Network Association (WVNA) will be holding their inaugural ANZAC event this year. The wreath laying ceremony at Memory Park is also a small, ticketed event. The ANZAC School Service returns to the Paceway at Penrith. All local schools in the Penrith region have been invited, with 800 students expected. All events are COVID controlled and have a COVID Safe Plan. For more information about joining the City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch, contact 4728 5225 from Monday to Thursday from 9am to 2pm or email subbranch@penrithrsl.com.au. r

You have a Slipped Disc – So what is a Disc and what does this mean? ‘Intervertebral discs’ have a hard outer connective-tissue (anulus fibrosus) and a ‘gelatinous’ interior (nucleus pulposus). At top and bottom are endplates, the transition tissues between disc and bone. Discs have several important functions. They act as: 1. Shock absorbers for the vertebral column 2. Ligaments that tie the vertebra above & below the disc together 3. Spacers between vertebra to allow appropriate nerve-exit from the spine. 4. Movement-enablers for vertebrae relative to each other allowing us to bend and twist As we age discs tissues may begin to deteriorate and weaken showing progressive signs of disc disease. This weakening may eventually lead to herniation of one (or more) discs, which we colloquially call a “slipped disc”. Disc herniation often occurs gradually but significant trauma can also lead to disc extrusion or sequestration. Disc-herniation stages are picture. If a herniated disc contacts a nerve, this may result in significant nerve compression (occlusion) and pain in the lower back and down the nerve course. Compression may also lead
8 April 2021 www.glenmoregazette.com.au
to ‘radiculopathy’, i.e. pathological changes in nerve function resulting in one of several ‘neurological deficits’ including: 1. Sensory changes such as tingling, altered sensation or numbness, 2. Motor changes such as muscle weakness or reflex loss. Any/all such symptoms, often referred to as sciatica, may be experienced by patients with a slipped disc. MRIs (involving no radiation exposure) are the best scan for enabling physicians to see the soft spinal tissues unseen with conventional x-ray. Things are however a little more complex than this. A study by Luoma et. Al. (2000) showed that many patients may have both low back pain and sciatica yet have no disc bulges. A further study by Livshits in 2011 showed that degeneration of the discs alone, whether or not a bulge was present, was highly associated with lower back pain and so it may be that the chemicals of inflammation released from degenerating disc tissue become a key factor in generating lower back pain, possibly sciatica. As discussed here previously, cleaning muscles of inflammatory infiltrate while lengthening them is key to tissue healing & remediation of symptoms.

Glenmore Park resident, Marie Haining has been announced as the 2021 Mulgoa Local Women of the Year. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, joined Marie at the NSW Women of the Year Awards recently to present her as the Mulgoa Local Woman of the Year along with a star line up of other award winners. Among her many achievements, Marie was recently recognised for her 50 years of service to the community as a Justice of the Peace. Also taking on the challenge of learning a brand-new online system as a conveyancer in her late sixties, Marie overcame the many challenges seniors face within a growing technological culture. Tanya Davies MP congratulated Marie on receiving this award and for the example she sets for seniors in the community. “Marie is an incredible example of the contribution seniors make to our community! She has been active in the workforce for decades and only recently stepped down from full-time work to four days a week at the age of 72” Mrs Davies said. “I am delighted to have recognised Marie for her fifty years of service as a JP and for her determination to overcome challenges.” Marie Haining said she was thrilled to be recognised in this year’s awards. “This award has humbled me. I hope this award demonstrates that sometimes small individuals’ efforts can play an important role in the lives of local communities. “My desire is to continue, as long as I am able, to serve my local community as a Justice of the Peace” said Ms Haining. FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.foothillschurch.com.au | A: Junction Factory Rd & Loftus St, Regentville Sundays 9.30am livestream – www.foothillschurch.com.au
Did you see our lights this Easter? We normally associate lights with Christmas, but historically some Christian communities featured lights in their Easter services. We did. Why? The response of Christians in the first century to risk their lives to declare his death and resurrection can only be explained if it really happened. After Jesus rose from the dead, they saw him as an agent of life and light dispelling darkness (death). For this reason, in their services, they lit a new candle representing the light of Christ’s resurrection, and everyone lit their own candle from this one until the whole place was alight with the light from their candles. It reminded them of the light of Christ’s resurrection overcoming the darkness of the tomb. That in Jesus Christ there was an answer to death. This darkness need not terrorize us anymore. Such conviction, strongly expressed in lights at Easter, speaks to the parts of our own lives where darkness hovers to sap our spirits and make us feel vulnerable and alone in a wild ocean. Those lights represent joyful hope. Future. Vision. Peace… …whatever looms before us in life. We covered our church property in Factory Road, Regentville with fairy lights this Easter. Perhaps you saw them? I urge you to open your heart to the truth these Easter lights were declaring – that in Jesus Christ Light wins over darkness! I pray that your heart will be filled with joyful hope and peace whatever you are facing in your life right now. FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 9am, 10.45am and 5pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. Families are hard work. They are hard work because they involve people, and people aren’t perfect. We all know that! In relationships, it is easy for things to be misunderstood. What might be an innocent question in one context can be quite offensive in another. The stress of a wedding can expose cracks in relationships and even leave people in tears. The issues of one generation might not be the concerns of another. We could imagine that things are easier for the Royal Family. Certainly, there isn’t the concern over being able to pay the next electricity bill or car repayment. However, the human side of the Royal Family is very real. They are real people with real relationships, and all have real struggles and hurts. It is easy to imagine that their family should be the perfect family. While we struggle in family life, we want there to be a fantasy world where they don’t. It’s just not true, because all families are hard work. God tells us that we are all sinners who need forgiveness. The forgiveness we can experience with God as we trust him becomes a powerful motivator to forgive others. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there could be healing and forgiveness down the track for the Royal Family? The kind of forgiveness, healing and change that models to the world what family life should be like – not perfect, but always trying our best to make relationships work. Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give a medication to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. r Happy Easter from our four legged friends! | Image: www.pixabay.com

As we prepare the April edition for print, parts of our state and our very own communities have been engulfed by severe rainfall and floods, it has been quoted in the media to be a ‘once in a century’ event. I know it comes as no surprise that the community has banded together once again with complete strangers offering accommodation, while others assist with the boarding of pets, supply of clothes, transportation, food and so many other offers of support. It makes me so proud and privileged to be a part of this wonderful community we call home. As we move through April, we hope to put this event behind us. But, like COVID, there will be plenty of work ahead in rebuilding and restoring life ‘after the floods’. Try and catch your breath, take a moment to read about all the latest happenings in Your Community News. It’s very fitting that I end with this, ‘Always help someone, you may be the only one who does’. Happy Easter, enjoy Your Community News.
