Jason Charlton, Club President, under 6-5’s team youngsters, Tanya Davies MP

Last month, Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, visited the Glenmore Park “Brumbies” Junior Rugby League Club fields and met with Club President Jason Charlton and youngsters from the Under 6-5’s team at Ched Towns Reserve to announce that their club was successful in receiving a one-off NSW Government grant for $4,000. “I am delighted to announce that the Glenmore Park “Brumbies” has been successful with their grant submission. I advocated strongly for the club at short notice to deliver this important financial support, just as the rugby league season is about to start” said Tanya Davies. Locks Lost for Leukaemia Within one week, Penrith Anglican College has raised over $50,000 in support of a Year 5 student fighting Leukaemia through the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. Fundraising Team captain Max Olsson is staggered how much the event has raised and wishes to thank everyone who donated. The College initially set a goal of $10,000, which also had a promise from of Headmaster Mr Mark Lewis to shave his head if reached. The College community smashed the target within two days, sealing the fate of Mr Lewis’ hair on Friday 13th March. “This is an amazing effort by all involved and I am humbled to be shaving my head in support our student, his family and greater College community”, states Mr Lewis. To keep donations flowing three female staff members raised their heads in support of the cause and agreed to shave their locks when and if the fundraising effort reached $25,000. As a result of the amazing support and generosity for the shave, five Penrith Anglican staff members and a number of students are now sporting new hairstyles. Head of Junior School, Mrs Kennedy said “she was in awe of the generosity and support towards our affected student and school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family”. If you would like to support the Leukaemia Foundation or find out more about blood cancers, please visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com or www.leukaemia. org.au.

Exciting New Initiatives in Glenmore Park At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we want to be faithful to Jesus’ call “As I have loved you, so you must love one another” from the Bible’s book of John. For 2015, we are excited to announce the introduction of two new ministries for families who have children with special needs. It is a great joy, to let you know that we have a caring and experienced team of people from our church who at our 10:15 Sunday Morning Kids Church program, have put in place structures to support these children - children who may have autism, learning difficulties and other disorders. We are also excited to be able to announce the establishment of a Friday night monthly support group for mums who have children with special needs – which we have affectionately called the “Super Mums” Group. The aim of this group is to provide real and practical support for mums caring for their children and to help them have some refreshment time with others in similar situations. Please get in touch with us if you would like to know anything more about these two wonderful groups. We also recognise that even though we live in a community with many people around us, there are still people who feel isolated and cut off from the others around them. There are many reasons for this including age, disability, broken relationships,

depression, or anxiety. On the third Friday of each month here at GPAC, we run “Friday Activities.” This is a friendship support group for people who may feel isolated and cut off. The group meets at 10am at the church for morning tea, some activities such as games, as well as a brief talk on an interesting topic. If you know of people who would benefit from this group or if you would like to join us, just call on the number below and we can arrange transport for you or just come along! Jesus always taught us to care for and love those around us who are in need and as a church, we are continually looking for ways we can do that – as He said, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” You can find details of all these ministries and others of our Church for all ages and stages of life, on our webpage or check us out on Facebook or even give me a call on 4733 1635 – we would love to let you know the great difference that Jesus will make to your life! Town Home Living Available for the First Time at Mulgoa Rise Estate

Homebuyers had, for the first time, the opportunity to purchase a town home at Mulgoa Rise, when 11 town homes were released in late March, from the plan, as part of the first stage release. The town homes in this prestige Penrith estate are situated on a vantage point near the entrance of the estate, bordered by bushland corridor and sporting fields, and some have views to the Blue Mountains. Offering resort style living, the new development ‘Outlook’ will comprise, when complete, 48 two-storey, four bedroom town homes, with residents enjoying exclusive access to their own swimming pool, neighbourhood park, BBQ and gazebo. Residents will also have access to the community facilities at Mulgoa Rise, including two sporting fields, two playgrounds, a picnic area, cycleway and walkway connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve. There are also golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. Mulgoa Rise is being developed by Mulpha Norwest, developers of the international award-winning Norwest Business Park; the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate; Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast; Hayman Island and the Intercontinental Hotel.

Mulpha Norwest General Manager Tim Spencer said Mulgoa Rise is experiencing strong enquiry from homebuyers, with all home sites released to date now sold. “Outlook will be a boutique community offering a highly sought-after resort-style lifestyle. The town homes to be released will all be individually designed with exceptional quality fixtures and fittings. We expect them to sell very quickly,” he said. Mulgoa Rise, when complete, will offer a contemporary village lifestyle with all the conveniences of nearby town amenities. With proposed neighbourhood shops and proposed school adjacent to the estate, Mulgoa Rise is also just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10 minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza shopping centre with its abundance of restaurants, cafés, shopping and entertainment. The nearest train station, with direct links to the city, is a short 10 minute drive away. There is also a good selection of kindergartens, preschool and childcare centres, as well as public and private schools located nearby. For further information on the new town homes at Mulgoa Rise, contact Jeff Webb on 1300 272 300 or 0410 438 038 or visit www.mulgoarise.com.au. The Sales Office on Bradley Street is now open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 4pm.

Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy.

The Joy and Drama of Easter If you are reading this column in the first week or so of April you will either be preparing to celebrate Easter or have just celebrated this greatest of Christian feasts. Christmas might get more publicity, mostly from a secular perspective, but for committed Christians Easter is the highlight of the year. Christmas ranks second in importance to Easter as Christmas celebrates the beginning of our salvation, the birth of Christ, but it is at Easter time that we recall with overflowing gratitude the saving act of Christ on the cross and, importantly, Christ’s resurrection from the dead. One of the striking differences between Christmas and Easter from a church-going perspective is that Easter is so much more dramatic. Yes, Christmas is big. We have the carols night and hear the story of the birth of Jesus and have packed churches but Easter is something else again. It is more than a single event. During Holy Week, the days leading up to Easter Sunday, many of the faithful gather on several occasions to recall the key events that led up to the empty tomb which made Jesus’ resurrection known. On the Sunday prior to Easter Sunday we celebrate Palm Sunday and recall the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, blessing our palm and olive branches which we will place in our homes as a reminder of this event which marked the beginning of the Passion of Jesus. On Holy Thursday, just a few days before Easter Sunday, we recall the Last Supper, the Passover meal which Jesus shared with his twelve disciples and recall Jesus washing the feet of his disciples at that meal, modelling the loving service

he asks of us to this day. We gather twice on Good Friday, firstly at 10:00am to walk with Jesus to Calvary, recalling key events during his last hours before death. At 3:00pm we gather in the church to focus on the death of Jesus, to hear the story of his final hours and to venerate the cross on which he died. We leave the church in silence and only return again to celebrate his resurrection, Easter. This celebration marks the culmination of the Holy Week with plenty of joyful singing, ringing of bells, incense and a general atmosphere of joy and celebration. Jesus is risen for our salvation! Alleluia! If you have never taken the opportunity to witness the drama of Holy Week and there is still time, please feel free to join us. If Easter Sunday has passed, you still have the opportunity to share in the joy of Easter on Sundays: Easter, being the highlight of the Christian calendar, is celebrated in the Catholic tradition for seven weeks! A happy and blessed Easter to all! In the event that you need to know our Holy Week and Easter Mass times, and our parish contact details, they are as follows: • 02 April: Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord’s Supper @ 7:00pm • 03 April: Stations of the Cross @ 10:00am • 03 April: Celebration of the Lord’s Passion @ 3:00pm • 04 April: Waiting at the Tomb @ 10:30am • 04 April: Easter Vigil @ 7:30pm • 05 April: Easter Sunday Masses @ 7:30am and 9:30am Looking forward to welcoming you! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling, Parish Priest

Girl Guides to Continue to Strengthen Engagement with Multicultural Communities

Minister for Citizenship and Communities, Victor Dominello has announced that the Baird Government will provide $45,000 to continue the successful partnership forged last year with Girl Guides NSW & ACT to recruit girls and young women from diverse cultural backgrounds. Minister Dominello was joined by Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies and Girl Guides NSW & ACT CEO Peta Gillies for the announcement in Glenmore Park last month. The partnership aims to increase the number of Girl Guides in NSW from a multicultural background through working closely with multicultural community leaders and girls families. “Girl Guides has over 30,000 members across Australia in 1,800 Guide Units and have been empowering girls and young women in NSW for over 80 years”, Mr Dominello said. “Under this partnership, girls and young women from diverse cultural backgrounds have joined girl guides to learn more about civic participation and give back to their local communities and we want to continue to support girl guides through this partnership. “Community volunteering organisations like Girl Guides encourage a shared commitment to Australian values and are important in promoting social cohesion and community harmony”.

“In our Harmony in Action Plan, we are encouraging a stronger focus on the beliefs and values which unite us all as Australians such as our volunteering ethos and we are committed to supporting activities which seek to empower women and girls from diverse backgrounds. “I want to encourage girls and young women from multicultural communities across NSW to become leaders in their communities and I know that this partnership will continue to help achieve that. “They will be joining ten million other Girl Guides and Girl Scouts from across the globe who are members of the largest voluntary movement dedicated to girls and young women in the world”, Mr Dominello said. Girl Guides NSW & ACT CEO Peta Gillies said that Girl Guides look forward to continuing to engage with multicultural communities across NSW and building on the success achieved under the partnership agreement. “Girl Guides prepares girls and young women to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We encourage teamwork, help girls to grow in confidence and inspire girls to speak up and be heard,” Ms Gillies said. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said that Girl Guides work tirelessly to invest in young girls across local communities like Mulgoa. “Girl Guides’ aim to make girls confident, responsible community members and this grant will encourage that important work to be continued across our multicultural communities. “The work that Girl Guides’ do in our local community is vital to the education and empowerment of young girls in our community and I know this grant will assist Girl Guides in impacting more girls here in Mulgoa and across NSW.”

Soul Matters: What are you Hungry for? When we experience a craving for a certain type of food, we don’t feel content until we eat it. We also hunger for things inside us, in our souls. When my wife was pregnant she was hungry for fried eggs, and would whip out the frypan at the strangest times to satisfy her craving. If we are hungry for chocolate or lollies might even raid the kids’ party bags to satisfy our craving and feel content. If we are hungry for ice cream or Thai food we might jump in the car and drive to the shops to satisfy it. On a physical level our hunger for certain foods might be simply a craving for sugar. But our inner cravings are much more significant. Finding this “inner sweetness determines our happiness. All of us are hungry to be loved and accepted. We discover this when someone tells us that they like us, or that we are good at something and we feel good inside. It’s uncool to admit this, but it is true for all of us in some way or another. At a deeper level this soul hunger shows itself in the way that we might almost kill ourselves to earn the affirmation, attention, and praise of others. It shows in the key questions that young girls and boys want answered. Our daughters are asking: “Am I beautiful? Our sons are wondering: “Do I matter? We crave other things too, such as: safety, happiness, peace, God, healing, freedom, or perhaps being able to get off the inner treadmill that drives us around and around with little reward in terms of inner sweetness. We also hunger to find meaning in what we are spending our lives doing.

Nurturessence

$UR $URPD 0DVVDJH 7KHUDS\

A less obvious type of soul hunger is about expressing love to others. We become more aware of this inner hunger when it is satisfied – when we do a genuinely good deed for others and feel a wonderful inward euphoria or joy. So, what are you hungry for? What inward sweetness do you crave? Stop for a minute and try to move beyond the outward activity and challenges of your life, and listen to your own soul. At this point in time, what do you want at that deeper level? The rock band U2 sang about the soul hunger that we have been talking about: “I have climbed the highest mountains‌I have run through the fields‌Only to be with you‌..But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for‌.. Now if we feel this too in some way, we must first understand what we are looking for and then ask how we can find it. You might say: “But my soul hunger runs too deep and nothing seems to satisfy it.â€? The Bible is full of the stories of people like this who crossed paths with Jesus. They sought love, God, healing, peace, a better life. Some were caught in religion but still couldn’t find what they were looking for. To such people Jesus said: “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.â€? Jesus saw himself as a light showing us how to find what we are looking for. PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent – Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Humans Need Hugs Touch is so important. Infants that have all of their needs met but don’t get hugs, affection or eye contact are at risk of developing a condition called ‘failure to thrive’. Dr Virginia Satir, a world renowned family therapist, said that humans need‌4 hugs per day for survival, 8 hugs per day for maintenance, 12 hugs per day for growth. How many hugs have your kids had today? It’s easy to give our little kids hugs because they are frequently climbing all over us. As our kids get older, we need to remember to give them hugs too. I tell my big boys “you’re never too old or too big for a hugâ€?. Parents who have a number of children do the math. They say “I have 4 kids so that means I’ll be giving 48 hugs per day, that’s a lot of hugsâ€?. Those parents who decide to give their kids’ hugs find lots of ways to meet the quota (hint: group hugs), and they report that they feel closer to their children, and their children have better behaviour as a result. When you have a strong relationship with your child, he or she is more inclined to listen to you and do as you ask. And why do hugs create all this goodness? Hugs release oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin is a ‘peace, love, and mung beans’ hormone that counteracts the nasty stress hormone called Cortisol. Go on! Give your kids more hugs. The nice thing about a hug is that while you’re giving one, you’re getting one in return. It’s a win-win!

Cumberland Zone to Receive New Portable Message Trailer Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Stuart Ayres, and Liberal Candidate for Londonderry, Bernard Bratusa has announced $25,000 in funding for a Portable Variable Message Sign Trailer for the Regentville Fire Control Centre/ Cumberland Zone. “This trailer will enable important bushfire information to be communicated quickly and effectively,” Stuart Ayres said. “Bernard Bratusa has made representations to my office regarding the need for an additional trailer in the area and it is a great pleasure to be able to make that a reality.” Mr Bratusa said the trailer would be a great asset across the Castlereagh, Londonderry, Llandilo and St Mary’s area. “Communication is crucial for community safety, and we want to help our firefighters get important messages out into the community. “Our volunteer firefighters do an outstanding job and it is wonderful to be able to assist them in continuing to do so,” Mr Bratusa said.

Living in Fear…… The acknowledgement of Rosie Batty as the Australian of the Year provides a welcome acknowledgement that domestic violence is a dire social issue that needs to be addressed. We would like to say it is “unAustralian” but the statistics suggest otherwise. Almost one woman a week killed; more and more “revenge killings” leaving mothers (and sometimes fathers) and other family members bereft and grieving. The amount of domestic violence reported each year is increasing. In Victoria alone more than 60,000 incidents were reported to police in 2014. Domestic Violence can be: 1. Psychological Abuse - Saying they are crazy whores, ugly, or stupid. To make them feel bad embarrass them, shame them, and saying they are bad women. 2. Fixing Chronic Foot Pain – Plantar Fasciitis Many of us have had painful feet at some time. Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes. Treatment options include rest, supportive shoes, arch supports, orthotics, stretching, strengthening, night splints, anti-inflammatory agents or surgery. These measures may help but some people suffer for a long time with little relief, even after trying many of these treatments. Plantar fasciitis pain can stop you walking, running, working, playing, and leave you feeling debilitated and frustrated when you can’t resolve it. Technically, things like over pronation, different leg lengths, lateral tibial torsion, & femoral anteversion are risk factors for plantar fasciitis, but, it’s plantar-fascia micro trauma, from overuse or excessive weight bearing activities that’s the most common cause. Overuse causes injury to foot ligaments, tendons and muscles. These tissues swell with toxin-filled fluids that leak from injured cells causing connective tissues, muscles & nerves in the affected areas to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood & lymph flow and this sustains the cycle of inflammation & pain. In most instances the solution lies in: 1. Reducing stressors (temporarily stop running, weight loss, etc) 2. Improving nutrient intake so the body can resist stressors 3. Removing inflammatory build-up in foot & calf, and lengthening affected muscles. This allows foot tissue function to normalise, which often relieves foot pain completely, even in many long standing cases.

5 Lifestyle Changes for Healthy Weight Loss!! Real weight loss comes with lasting, healthy lifestyle changes. Try to make the following changes over the next few weeks to see some great long lasting results. 1. TV Time: Swap the time you use to sit and watch your favourite shows for exercise. If you must watch, use the time to burn a few calories. Stand up and do some squats, lunges or sit-ups. 2. Sleep: Most adults need an average of eight hours of sleep each night. If you’re not getting adequate amounts of rest, you’re more likely to be hungry, overeat, and gain weight. 3. Drink Choices: If you’re one of the millions hooked on soft drinks, alcohol, or other sweetened beverages, your weight loss goals may remain out of reach until you replace these drinks with water. You should also know that your brain often confuses thirst with hunger, so at the first sign of hunger, grab a glass of water. 4. Breakfast: If you try cutting calories by skipping breakfast, you’ll be excessively hungry by mid-morning. As a result, the healthy calories you would have eaten at breakfast are replaced with calorie-filled snacks and an over-sized lunch. 5. Physical Activity: Weight loss is about burning more calories than you consume. Therefore, it makes sense that dieting and exercise must go hand in hand. The quickest and most permanent weight loss comes as a result of a combination of healthy eating and consistent, challenging workouts. I’m here to help you meet and maintain your fitness and weight loss goals. Call or email me today to get started on a fitness program that will get you on the fast track to your best body ever.

The RSPCA is NOT an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community to continue it’s vital daily work. Thank you for making the RSPCA NSW your charity of choice. Check out our website for more information www.orchardhillsvet. com.au or join us on Facebook. MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson – Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Property Investing Basics We have an affinity for property here in Australia. We all want to own our own home and most of us would like to own an investment property or two. In fact over 1.9 million of us reported to the ATO that we owned an investment property. That’s about 8.3% of the population. But whilst many of us have the desire to be property investors, most will never take that step due to misinformation, fear or simply not knowing how to proceed. Some invest anyway, often with disastrous results. Done properly though property can be an easy and relatively safe investment which can provide tax benefits and generate wealth over the long term if you get a few key things right. Of course finding the right property is crucial. An attractive rental proposition in an area where demand is high. Then you need to protect your asset properly with a good Landlord’s Insurance in case you get one of the few bad tenants. Importantly though, you must make sure that your finances are structured correctly. Without question, most of the problems I see that investors have all relate back to their finance. Whether you’re looking to buy your first investment, fix a problem with your existing property or want to grow your portfolio, our free Property Investor consultation is for you. And the great thing is, we won’t try to sell you a property!
