Free Child Car Seat Safety Checks

Penrith City Council will offer free child restraint safety checks to local residents in May 2023. The checks will be undertaken by an authorised Child Restraint Fitter.

Australian law requires children travelling in cars to be secured in approved restraints, which means children:

• younger than 6 months must be secured in a rear-facing restraint

• 6 months to 4 years must be secured in a rear or forward-facing restraint

• 4 to 7 years must be secured in a forward-facing restraint or booster seat

• younger than 4 years must travel in the back seat of a vehicle with 2 or more rows.

A 15-minute safety check will give you peace of mind next time you hit the road. You’ll get your car seats checked by a professional and get the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about driving safely with kids.

1. ANZAC School Service: 4th April,

2. ANZAC Sunday Service: 16th April,

3. Women Veterans Network Australia (WVNA) ANZAC Service: 22nd April and

4. ANZAC Day Dawn Service: 25th April.

The Annual ANZAC Day School Service will take place on Tuesday 4th April at Penrith Paceway. Traditionally, a school nominates to host the event and this year it will be Cranebrook High School. The event has attracted almost every school in the Penrith region, with approximately 1,700 children and their teachers anticipated to attend. Local Navy, Army and Air Force Cadet Units will also be on parade and will be manning the catafalque. The City of Penrith RSL sub-Branch, along with CDC Bus Transport, will be supplying transport to/from the event for attending schools. There will not be any public access to this event.

On Sunday 16th April 2023, the annual Sunday march will make its long-awaited return after 4 years on the sideline. Veterans wishing to march are requested to meet on the corner of Castlereagh and Tindale Streets at 2.30pm. The march will

step off at 2.45pm and the service will commence at 3pm at Memory Park.

The public are highly encouraged to support this event by lining Castlereagh, High Streets and Memory Park.

The ANZAC Day Dawn Service Commemoration will be on Tuesday 25th April. Veterans wishing to march are requested to meet on the corner of Castlereagh and Tindale Streets at 4.15am. Local Karen Lee Mungarrja is an Indigenous artist whose profile continues to rise. Her vibrant artworks are sought after and recognised all over the country.

The former Glenmore Park resident most recently collaborated with Cadbury Roses, which saw one of her artwork creations used for the limited edition Roses boxes at Mother’s Day last year.

“Mondelez approached me in early 2021 to collaborate with them to design the 2022 range of limited edition gift boxes and tins” said Karen to the Glenmore Gazette.

“It was very exciting, and surreal to see my art on the packaging. A pinch myself moment” she continued.

Such is Karen’s demand as an artist, she held a small private exhibition in Melbourne at VMG, the Venetian Media Group also in 2022. She is particularly excited about a project that will soon be revealed.

“Over the last 9 months, I have worked on a large commercial project. Although I am unable to share the details at this time, I am excited for the unveiling mid-year.

“As well as this, I am working on more art for Healthscope which will hang in their offices in Sydney” Karen acknowledged.

Karen loves what she does and the connections her art brings.

“I love my work. It hasn’t happened overnight, and it consumes a lot of my time. But I am still constantly surprised and I look forward to continuing to create art that connects with people” she reflected.

Karen Lee Mungarrja’s artwork is available to purchase through Black Door Gallery in Penrith, Burrunju Art Gallery in Canberra and Bluethumb (Australian online gallery).

To see videos of her art practice and information on new works, you can find Karen on social media on Instagram @karen_lee_artist and Facebook @karenleeart.

Little Shop of Horrors Comes to Glenmore Park

Penrith Musical Comedy Company (PMCC) are proud to announce their production of Little Shop of Horrors will be staged in the new Performing Arts Centre at Glenmore Park High School next month.

There will be 8 shows in total, from Friday 5th May to Saturday 13th May.

“Penrith Musical Comedy Company is very excited with the opportunity that the new Performing Arts Centre at Glenmore Park High School provides. It is a high quality venue that will offer a resource for community groups, such as ours, to stage theatre, dance, or similar productions” said Craig Parris, President of PMCC.

“We’re keen to be working closely with the staff at Glenmore Park High School, to not only ensure our production is a success, but that we help the school to understand how best the venue can be used to its fullest potential” he continued.

Little Shop of Horrors is a musical comedy that tells the story of Seymour, a mildmannered floral shop assistant who purchases a strange, exotic plant in an effort to help his shop’s owner with lagging sales. However, the R&B singing plant that Seymour has named Audrey II (as a tribute to his colleague and unrequited love) acquires a taste for human blood, and soon sets its sights on taking over the world. Will Audrey II succeed in its scheme for world domination?

“Come along to find out. It’s “plant-based” fun for everyone!” Craig delighted. Tickets are now on sale and are priced from $34 (student/concession) to $39. Groups can contact PMCC via email at contact@penrithmusical.org for details of group discounts. Visit their website at https://penrithmusical.org and follow the “Book Tickets” links.

Penrith Musical Comedy Company is a Penrith-based, non-profit community group, run by volunteers.

“Seeing a show in your local community is a great way to not only see a quality theatre production, but also to support a local group that provides opportunities for talented community members to participate in a fun activity where they can sing, dance, act and meet new friends” he ended.

Karen’s Sweet Success

Ten-year-old Nicholas Tadros suffered extensive injuries in the recent helicopter crash on the Gold Coast which tragically killed his mother Vanessa.

The heartbreaking story has captivated the nation and now there’s a way for people to make a difference.

In an update on the family’s tragic situation, Channel 9’s A Current Affair is joining forces with Australian Lions Foundation to launch an appeal to raise funds to help support Nicholas and his father Simon, who now finds himself a single parent.

Donations to the Australian Lions Foundation Appeal can be made online and 100% of the funds raised will be used to support Nicholas and his father Simon during this difficult time.

“Nicholas broke almost every bone in his body in the mid-air helicopter crash in January. When we recently saw his father confirm to A Current Affair that Nicholas’ right leg needed to be amputated due to infection, we knew we needed to do something.”

“Nicholas’ father Simon can no longer work as a truck driver and won’t for the foreseeable future as he needs to be by his son’s side for the long road ahead. Nicholas will spend months in hospital and will likely need medical care for the rest of his life.”

“We know many people are looking for a way to support Nicholas and his father through this difficult time and we are pleased to facilitate this through an appeal.”

“The Australian Lions Foundation has been providing grants for compassionate support and community initiatives since the 1980’s. Every year the Foundation distributes more than $1 million for projects through local Lions Clubs.”

“Nicholas and Simon are from Western Sydney and we will be working closely with their local Lions Club of Parramatta to manage the support,” said Tony Benbow OAM, Australian Lions Foundation Chairperson.

To make a donation, visit https://www.givenow.com.au/cr/australianlionsfoundation.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

Corporate donations to be made via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to the Foundation’s Compassionate Grant Fund’s Westpac bank account (BSB: 036-157, Account#: 535251) with an email to be sent to alf.tadros@lions.org.au confirming their donation.

Glenmore Park’s Hayley Walsh is a self-professed word nerd. The talented author has published three books and is also a successful podcaster.

“I have loved to write my whole life. English was my favourite subject at school. I published my first book in 2020 at the age of 44, so it’s never too late to follow your dreams” Hayley smiled.

She published ‘Crayons and Chaos’ and ‘Making March’ in 2020 and followed this up with ‘Not Dead Yet’ in 2022. Hayley’s books are described as light-hearted fiction.

Hayley began producing her podcast, ‘The Write Words Podcast’, in 2021.

“I interview other authors from all over the globe about their work, share news on writing events happening around the world, and share book reviews of stories I have enjoyed. I am a very social person who loves a chat, so doing the podcast is lots of fun” she stated.

Her inspiration to write came from her late father.

“I sadly lost my wonderful father very suddenly and unexpectedly and reassessed my whole life. It made me realise life is too short and I set out to start working on the books I had always wanted to write. My dad had always encouraged my creativity and I know he would be proud of what I have achieved” Hayley reflected.

Hayley’s first book ‘Crayons and Chaos’ was inspired by her real life experience of leaving an unhappy marriage, finding a new man who had two kids, and becoming an instant step mum with no kids of her own. Her second book ‘Making March’ is a comical look at 40 year old Kate’s diary for the month of February, as she navigates the month from hell and tries to make it to March with her sanity intact. Whilst her third book ‘Not Dead Yet’ is a story of love, loss, and moving on in later life. It was inspired by patient stories she heard in her day job as an Aged Care Clinical Nurse Consultant.

“All my books contain a dash of humour because what is life without a good giggle, right?” she added.

She is currently working on two new books. The first is a Christmas novella, ‘Tis Not the Season To Be Molly’ which she hopes to publish at the end of the year and ‘Scattered Scones’, telling the story of 52 year old Penny who receives an unexpected lifechanging diagnosis.

“As a self-published author, I like setting my own deadlines and having full control over my story. I design my own covers which I really enjoy. I find it cathartic” Hayley ended.

Her books are available in both kindle and paperback on Amazon.

For more on Hayley Walsh, visit her author website at hayleywalshauthor.com, podcast website at thewritewordspodcast.com, Author/Hayley on Facebook and TaylesbyHayles on Twitter.

Responding to Children’s Good Behaviour

Many parenting articles talk about dealing with difficult behaviour and yet, the ways we respond to children’s positive behaviour is just as important.

Due to an inbuilt negativity bias, we pay more attention to the bad than the good. The human species has survived for over 200,000 years in part because of our capacity to be alerted early to potential threats. While a focus on the negative would be useful for survival in the Savannah, it can greatly harm a parent’s relationship with their child when left unchecked.

For children with behavioural difficulties and their parents, a vicious cycle can develop over time. When a child behaves in a manner which elicits a punitive, angry, or hostile response from the parent, this often provokes the child to behave in an even more disruptive manner, and then the conflict escalates and continues.

Conversely, we build more positive relationships with children when we notice and remark on behaviour we appreciate. It helps children learn social and other life skills, it builds children’s confidence and sense of self, and it re-connects us to our love for our children.

The first step is to notice when you feel good (e.g., relief, comfort, pride, delight) in response to something your child has said or done. For specific behaviour concerns, look out for the exceptions. For example, if you are concerned about your child swearing, look out for times when your child speaks politely.

Focus on conveying genuine feelings, rather than providing an evaluation of the child’s behaviour. Avoid vague platitudes like “good boy/good girl”. Praise that feels mechanical or disingenuous can feel manipulative for the child.

Talk about how your child’s action positively affected you. Impacts might be concrete (e.g., in time, energy, money) or relate to your values (e.g., honesty, integrity, respect). Specifically describe the behaviour that you appreciated and why. For example, “I appreciate it when you wash up your cup, because now I have less dishes to do later.”

Sharing appreciation is one of the most powerful ways of building your bond with your child, so it is worth taking the time and effort to do it well and often.

THE EASTER CHARACTERS

Easter Safety for Pets

Easter is a fun time of year filled with spending time with family and pets, a relaxing long weekend, the annual Easter egg hunt and of course chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! But for our pets, there are lots of hazards around which could turn a relaxing weekend into an emergency trip to the vet.

Easter eggs and chocolate - Chocolate is usually in abundance in most households when Easter comes around. Our pets are more likely to have the chance to hoover up sweet treats, especially if they are left around on low surfaces or on the floor. Although harmless to us chocolate can make dogs extremely ill and can even be fatal. This is due to a toxin called Theobromine. Pets metabolise this chemical much slower than humans, meaning it can have detrimental effects. Symptoms of Theobromine poisoning include muscle stiffness, tremors, vomiting, heart arrhythmias and seizures. If you think your pet has eaten chocolate, we’d recommend you take them to your vet immediately.

Hot cross buns - Hot Cross buns are another food that we love to eat but can be dangerous to our pets as they contain raisins and other dried fruits Unfortunately these can cause kidney failure in both dogs and cats. Kidney failure classically causes increased thirst and urination; however, symptoms are usually seen weeks later when the secondary effects of reduced kidney function become evident.

Confectionary - Sweets and lollies are also a popular Easter favourite. Unfortunately, some sweets contain a substance called Xylitol, which is an artificial sweetener. It is extremely harmful to dogs and even a small amount can be toxic. If your dog eats

sweets made with xylitol, monitor for any vomiting, lethargy, lack of coordination and seizures and seek veterinary advice.

Easter Baskets - Easter baskets are a lovely gift idea and are great for kids as you can put small toys and other treats in there. Small toys and filler material like straw and plastic grass (very appealing to cats as it’s fun to play with) are easily swallowed by pets. This is likely to cause digestive obstruction, which may lead to an emergency surgery. Symptoms may include persistent vomiting, bloating, weight loss, weakness and dehydration.

Lilies – Easter lilies (along with many other types of lilies) are often gifted around Easter time, and although they help to brighten the house up, they too can be extremely toxic to cats. Every part of the lily is dangerous; this even includes the water it’s sitting in! It causes kidney failure and can be fatal if treatment isn’t given quickly. Some of the signs your cat may be suffering from lily poisoning are as follows: dehydration, extreme thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures and even death.

Sadly, the majority of toxins mentioned won’t show symptoms until the damage is already done and at which point it is not reversible, especially raisins and lilies which effect the kidney.

Wishing you all an enjoyable and safe Easter break.

A Touch of Malta

Nanna Clara’s Maltese Kitchen is a small business that are passionate about bringing homemade Maltese food to life. It was established in 2018 by Jenny Aquilina.

“I was inspired by the way that the Maltese community embraces the love of food and how they share their family time around the dining table” explained Jenny to the District Gazette.

“Maltese love the traditional way of cooking. With so many people living busy lifestyles, I thought it was time to share my love of cooking Maltese food the way my Nanna showed me” she added.

The name of the food business did indeed come from Jenny’s grandmother, paying homage to her much loved Nanna Clara.

“Nanna Clara is my grandmother’s name. When I was young, I used to watch her cook in the kitchen and, of course, sampling the food as she cooked. So, I named my food van after her” Jenny smiled.

It’s no secret that Nanna Clara’s Maltese Kitchen’s pastizzis are popular.

“What can I say, I have the best pastizzi here in Sydney. I also sell the well known corned beef pie. I even have the privilege of coming in the Top 5 in Australia for this” she said.

Maltese doughnuts are always a crowd favourite. Baked Macaroni and Baked Rice are on the menu. The Ravioli is all made by hand. She also sells Peppered Cheese.

“The beauty of being a mobile business is that Nanna Clara’s Maltese Kitchen can attend all the Maltese festas in and around Sydney. If you can’t come to me, follow our social media pages and drop me a DM” Jenny replied.

“I am available to do any function you may have. You can even surprise your Nanna or Nunnu with the memories of the good old days back in Malta, with the love of home cooked meals” she ended. Grazzi!

Ulcerative Colitis - Could Oral N-Acetyl-Cysteine Supplementation Help Patients?

Scientists can induce an ulcerative colitis (UC) like condition in rats and pigs by intrarectal administration of acetic acid. The acid damages the colonic epithelial (lining) cells. Damaged cells release inflammatory chemicals in order to inform/warn surrounding tissue cells and bring immune cells into the area to investigate and deal with the cause/s of cell damage. Eventually, the death of epithelial cells leads to ulcer formation in the rectum and colon. How acetic acid induces colitis is still unclear, but reactive oxygen species produced by the activated immune system cells plays a significant role.

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide (i.e., a tiny protein). GSH is made in the liver, which acts as a GSH reservoir. GSH is made from the essential amin acid cysteine. Being ‘essential’ means that cysteine, unlike many other amino acids, can’t be made by our bodies but must be gotten from the diet. Once made, GSH is delivered via the blood stream to all body cells. Inside body cells, it plays a critical role in protecting them against cell damage from:

1. immune-system-generated (microbe killing) free radicals.

2. free radicals generated during energy production by mitochondria.

3. many other toxins made inside body-cells.

4. toxic agents from external sources e.g., pollution related chemicals

a. Nitric oxide

b. sulphur oxide

c. cigarette smoke compounds, etc

GSH quickly neutralises these toxic agents.

The maintenance of excellent GSH levels inside cells is key to overcoming harmful effects of immune system generated free radicals, which can damage and kill cells such as colonic epithelial cells in UC.

So, could cysteine supplementation such as N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) help treat UC?

When acetic acid is used to induce ulcerative colitis, giving animals high (500mg/kg) daily oral doses of NAC inhibits:

1. colonic epithelial cell death

2. breakdown of normal epithelial layer structure

3. ulcer formation

4. formation of:

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

EMU SPORTS CLUB

1 Leonay Parade, Leonay NSW 2750

This month, my support worker Michelle and I decided to have lunch at Emu Sports Club at Leonay. This venue is family friendly and even has a play area for kids.

Having visited this venue many times over, I was very keen to try the Garlic Bread with cheese and chilli flakes on top. Michelle and I shared this Garlic Bread and we were impressed with the flavour of the cheese and how soft this Garlic Bread was. The chilli flakes on top gave this bread some spice and it was not too spicy. I can say it was mild. All the flavours went together, and I recommend this Garlic Bread.

When browsing through the menu, I settled on a 300gm Porterhouse Steak, which was accompanied by a scrumptious salad and some chips. I also asked for my Steak to become a surf and turf, with prawns on top. Along with this was the sauce, which had a slight garlic/curry flavour. It was exceptional. I chose Italian dressing on the salad and the dressing was outstanding. The Steak was perfectly cooked and the flavours were sealed in and the char grilled taste gave it extra flavours. It was amazing and full of flavour. The salad was crisp, not boring, and came with carrot, onion, lettuce, cucumber, and other ingredients.

Michelle chose the Southern Style Chicken Burger, which I have had previously. She was impressed with the flavour and how juicy the chicken was. This Burger is recommended for those who enjoy Southern Style Chicken.

I give Emu Sports Club a ten out of ten.

The staff are always friendly, the service is efficient, and I have never encountered any problems while visiting this venue. If you have not visited Emu Sports Club, I highly recommend this venue to everyone.

12 year old Jackson will compete in the Junior Development Program, which is held on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April. This event is restricted to only those nominated by the New South Wales Axemens Association, and he is honoured to be selected.

“At this stage, I can only compete in the Underhand Event, so I’m looking forward to that. But I am also looking forward to being amongst the competitors this year and meeting other axemen” Jackson explained to the Glenmore Gazette.

He comes from a long line of woodchoppers in the family. Jackson’s great uncle John Startin was a champion woodchopper, whilst his father Luke O’Mara and grandfather Stephen O’Mara are still woodchoppers.

Jackson’s wood chopping skills as an axeman have taken him all over New South Wales and interstate to compete at various agricultural shows.

This year, he has competed at The Jamison Hotel on Australia Day, placing 2nd in the Novice Underhand and 3rd in the Under 16’s Underhand. He came 1st place at Oberon Show in the Novice Underhand, and most recently, 2nd in Novice Underhand and 3rd in the Under 16’s Underhand at Luddenham Show.

This is off the back of an amazing finish to 2022, which saw him taking 1st place in the Junior Underhand at the Wandandian Show late in the year and also receiving the Junior Axemen of the Year for the Metropolitan Axemens Association.

He has already set his sights at being an Australian champion.

“I would like to be the youngest axemen to win an Australian title” he said.

“If anyone would like to give woodchopping a go, we train on Thursday nights at Hawkesbury Showground” ended Jackson. For more information, check out Metropolitan Axemens Association on Facebook.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown nails occur when the edges or corners of a nail grow into the adjacent skin, causing discomfort, pressure, inflammation, bleeding or even infection. This condition should be addressed quickly so the injury doesn’t progress to the point where surgery is the only treatment option. How to prevent ingrown nails*:

1) Cut nails straight across

Cutting down the sides of toenails provides only temporary relief and encourage nails to continue ingrowing further. Nails should be cut straight across, rough edges filed, and corners rounded slightly to prevent catching.

2) Prevent trauma and treat injuries immediately

Any kind of trauma can cause a nail to start ingrowing. Acute injuries, infections and even footwear that crowds the toes, rubs or slips can cause trauma to nails. If an injury has occurred, seek help from a podiatrist straight away to assess and treat it.

3) Don’t hack at it!

Resist the urge! Your podiatrist can treat the ingrown nail properly with sterile equipment.

4) See your podiatrist

Genetics can cause incompatibilities in the shape of the toe and nail, meaning that ingrown nails are inevitable for some people. Fortunately, there are several treatments available*:

A) Footwear change

We ensure you are choosing styles that will not aggravate the condition.

B) Regular maintenance

Sometimes clearing hard skin from under the edges of the nail occasionally is all that is needed to keep a nail comfortable. We can also teach you how to tape the skin back, or we can pack foam under the edge of the nail to encourage the nail to grow correctly.

C) Nail bracing

We use Onyfix to brace suitable nails so they grow out straight instead of curving down into the skin.

D) Nail surgery

If conservative care isn’t suitable, a surgical procedure can be performed to remove the troublesome edges of the nail and stop them growing back. For severe injuries, it may be necessary to remove the damaged nail entirely and help the new nail grow in the right direction.

More Than Dance

Penrith Physical Culture Club is your local physie club, with classes in Glenmore Park.

Penrith Physie was started in 1995, by sisters Karen and Colleen. “We started the club with just 20 members and over the past 29 years, our club has around 120 members each year. Penrith Physie is affiliated with the BJP School of Physical Culture, which have a history spanning 130 years. BJP is the original style of Physie in Australia” said Karen Allan, Senior Teacher and Club Manager of Penrith Physical Culture Club.

The Penrith Club holds classes in 3 locations in Glenmore Park. They have classes at Glenmore Park Community Centre, Caroline Chisholm High School Dance Studio and at the new Nangamay Public School. Their classes are on Mondays and Tuesdays and Saturday mornings, leading up to competition time.

They have classes for Tiny Dancers (3 and 4 years) up to Ladies of any age. Classes are designed to suit beginners, through to experienced girls and women who love to dance.

“Physie is a great sport and involves learning routines based around ballet, hip hop, stretching, core strength and develops strong confident girls and women” she explained.

The local club would like to invite new members to come for a free 2 week trial.

“Once you come to a class, it’s hard to leave. Penrith BJP Physical Culture Club also accepts both Creative and Active Kids Vouchers for term fees” Karen replied to the Glenmore Gazette.

What does Karen enjoy most about being a part of the club? “Physie has been a part of my whole life and the friendships are one of the best things about it. Strong supportive relationships. Seeing our members achieve personal goals is fulfilling. And you get fit and have fun. I love what we have built at Penrith Physie”.

Attack of the Redbacks!

Glenmore Park Cricket Club have capped off a successful 2022/23 season, with a number of their up and coming stars shining bright on the pitch.

The Redbacks, who are one of the largest club’s in the Penrith District, fielded 12 Junior and 5 Senior teams this year.

“It was another strong season for Glenmore Park and great to see our players achieve milestones in their careers” said Katrina Wild, Secretary of Glenmore Park Cricket Club.

17 players on 37 occasions scored 50 runs or more, showing the strength of the local club.

Highlights from the junior players included Riley Killeen from the Under 15 Reds scoring his maiden century. 3 of their players took 5 wicket hauls, with Lachlan Hood from the Under 16 Reds taking 5/19 in the Under 16 Semi Final to assist his team reaching the Grand Final.

“Our Under 16 Red team took out the Under 16 Premiership defeating the favourites, Emu Plains, in a nail-biting finish. This team had faced a number of challenges throughout the season with some serious injuries, but their determination and teamwork came through on the day” Katrina reflected.

The Redbacks believe that every cricket enthusiast deserves the opportunity to play the game they love.

“The Club is proud of the support it puts behind all its players. Girl’s cricket is also continuing to grow in the local area and the club offered incentives this season to see more girls joining Glenmore Park. The team spirit that the Redbacks are renowned for has continued to shine again this year” she acknowledged.

With the season now over, the Senior Presentation will be held on Saturday 1st April, whilst the Junior Presentation will be on Sunday 7th May.

Any players interested in joining Glenmore Park Cricket Club can email secretary@gpcricket.com.au or follow their Facebook page for updates on next season’s registrations.

“The club is currently investigating the option of replacing its playing and training shirt designs, so any organisations looking to sponsor a local sporting club are invited to contact secretary@gpcricket.com.au. There are many sponsorship options available, and we would welcome any support” ended Katrina.

What Reward do you Seek in Life?

What, when you find it, will make you happy and content? Or “What do you worship?”

We all ‘worship’ something. Worshipping isn’t just about doing religious activity. We worship whatever we place greatest value in, and finding or experiencing whatever we place greatest value in is our reward. It is what we think is worth seeking as the focus of our life.

We can spend life climbing a ladder for a certain reward only to find, at the top, that the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall. Someone expressed this regret, after spending the best years of his life accumulating wealth but having no relationship with his daughter. This regret surfaces when people face ‘the other side’ on their deathbed, because all they have valued and worshipped is on this side. The ladder they climbed was on the wrong wall.

Easter is about worship of Jesus Christ or placing greatest value in him as the focus for life. That he is our reward. If we received or achieved nothing else in life, finding Jesus Christ would be enough to make us happy, content, and strong for any challenge.

Why would a person think this and place such high value in Jesus Christ? In a nutshell, the Bible teaches that God sent Jesus Christ to die on a cross as a way of paying for the sins of human beings. With sins paid for, we can experience a relationship with God and receive his help to find freedom, peace, and joy. The resurrection of Jesus Christ means that death has been defeated and that when we eventually face ‘the other side’, our life doesn’t end. After we pass from this world, we live in ‘heaven’ or ‘paradise’ forever—a place of wholeness and love with God where there are no tears, pain, or death. In this place, we will see again our loved ones and others who have also placed value in Jesus Christ.

Happy Easter. Go well.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga

P: 4733 1635 A: 16 William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park W: www. gracewest.church Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30am, 10.30am and 6pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

When you hear of someone dying as a young adult, it just feels like such a waste. They had their whole lives ahead of them! However, if that person is a violent criminal or a threat to the community, it might be a different story.

Jesus was killed in his early thirties for what we might describe as an issue of domestic terrorism. He didn’t kill anyone but was threatening the leaders of the time. The conclusion of one of them was “that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish” (John chapter 11 verse 50). From his point of view, the choice seemed to be killing Jesus or the whole nation perishing. So, they decided to kill him.

However, that community leader didn’t understand the significance of what he was saying. You see, Jesus came to die for us. In his death, he paid the penalty you and I deserve for our rebellion against God. He died ‘for the people’. Moreover, his death means that the people won’t perish, not because of the elimination of a political radical, but his death and resurrection secure a future for the people of God that can never be taken away. Just as the most famous verse in the Bible says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Mayoral Charity Ball – Penrith 2023

The inaugural Mayoral Charity Ball will be held in Penrith on Friday, 5 May 2023.

Imagined by Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen, the Mayoral Charity Ball will be a black tie event supporting a local charity.

The chosen charity for 2023 is The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter, which provides emergency shelter and support for local women and their children who are escaping domestic and family violence.

In 2022, there were 1,077 reported incidents of domestic violence in the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA). This is one of the highest figures across NSW and highlights a real need in our community*

All funds raised through the Mayoral Charity Ball will be donated to The Haven to help make a difference and empower women in our community.
